Mexico vs England: World Cup Last 16 Match Faces Storm Threat Just Hours Before Kick-Off

0

Shall we turn our attention to the match?

While it’s tempting to focus on the ever-changing weather (pun intended), it’s important to dive into the pre-match anticipation.

After all, there’s always a chance the game could start as scheduled.

Should that happen, the England team will face a formidable challenge from a Mexican squad ready to make their mark on the Azteca field.

In recent days, much of the discourse has centered around the significant leap in competition for England, moving from a struggle against the lower-ranked DR Congo to opposing one of the most formidable teams globally.

Mexico have won all of their matches at this tournament, playing ferocious, open, and expansive football. Oh yeah, and they are rock solid at the back, having yet to concede.

They will have roughly 80,000 fans behind them, going absolutely crazy from the off. And then there is the altitude; we can’t forget about that.

It’s going to be one hell of a test for Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Intent to Retire from World Cup Competition

0

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that Portugal’s current World Cup campaign, which has successfully reached the Round of 16, will mark his last appearance in the global tournament.

The renowned footballer shared this revelation during a press conference on Sunday, held ahead of Portugal’s highly anticipated clash with Spain in Dallas. Despite acknowledging the end of an era, Ronaldo expressed optimism, hoping that Monday’s match “isn’t my last game.”

Speaking to reporters, Ronaldo candidly remarked, “There will come a day [when I retire from international football].” He continued, “But truthfully, whatever unfolds on [Monday], Ronaldo will walk away with a clear mind, not merely 100% but 1,000%. I have poured everything into football. While I don’t need it for my life to be fulfilling, my passion drives me. I play because it’s my love… Every day is to be cherished. And let’s be honest, three goals in this World Cup isn’t too shabby, right?”

With Ronaldo’s decision, he will not don the national colors when Portugal co-hosts the World Cup in 2030 alongside Spain. This marks the end of a remarkable international journey that began in 2006.

Although Ronaldo has yet to claim a World Cup title, his contribution was pivotal as Portugal advanced in the tournament. His penalty-kick goal secured victory in the Round of 32 against Croatia, which was notably his first ever goal in the World Cup knockout stage.

“It’s been fantastic,” Ronaldo said, according to ESPN, of a World Cup where he has collected three goals in total. “It goes beyond the pitch… This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most, because of people’s passion. It’s even more this time, I don’t know why. It’s been, emotionally, the best. I’ve enjoyed it very much.”

Ronaldo, 41, also plays for Al-Nassr FC — a Saudi Pro League team — and has already etched his place as one of the greatest soccer players ever, and when he scored during a group stage game against Uzbekistan, he became the first player to score in six different World Cups.

And Monday afternoon, with plenty at stake for Portugal even before Ronaldo’s announcement, could end up being remembered as the final World Cup chapter in his storied career on the stage.

Miraculous Recovery: Toddler Revives in Hospital Morgue After Near-Drowning Incident, Police Report

0

In Arizona, police suggest felony child abuse charges for the parents of an 18-month-old boy who nearly drowned, due to their admission of using marijuana and insufficient supervision during a Super Bowl party earlier this year. The incident gained national attention when the boy was mistakenly declared dead but was later found alive in the hospital morgue hours after.

The Gilbert Police Department’s recommendation for felony child abuse charges against Vincent Fiordilino’s parents is currently under review by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, as reported by AZFamily. So far, no charges have been filed.

According to investigators, during the gathering, Vincent vanished from his parents’ sight and was later discovered floating face down in the family’s backyard pool. AZFamily obtained a police report indicating that both parents admitted to using marijuana at the party. The report asserts that their impaired condition, possibly caused by marijuana or other substances, led to their failure to notice Vincent’s fall into the pool.

Once Vincent was retrieved from the water, he was rushed to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where doctors initially declared him dead that evening, police report. In a shocking twist, medical staff found the toddler to be alive and breathing hours later, after he had already been sent to the hospital’s morgue around 7:23 p.m. He was subsequently airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

The police report alleges responding officers and Vincent’s parents questioned whether the toddler had actually died before he was pronounced dead, saying they believed he was still showing signs of life. Hospital staff reportedly told them Vincent was exhibiting agonal breathing, an involuntary reflex that can occur near death.

According to the report, a nurse later reported detecting a pulse after the child had been pronounced dead. Detectives allege the physician who made the initial determination maintained his assessment was correct and instructed hospital staff to stop lifesaving measures despite concerns from Vincent’s parents and responding officers that the toddler still appeared to be breathing. Police did not recommend criminal charges against the physician, according to AZFamily.

According to AZFamily, a Dignity Health spokesperson said the hospital conducted a review following the incident.

“This is a heartbreaking situation. We immediately conducted a thorough review of all aspects of the care that was provided to learn what happened and to make meaningful changes to strengthen our care,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Out of respect for the patient’s privacy, we cannot discuss details. We continue to work with the family and their representative. Patient safety and exceptional care is our highest priority.”

A GoFundMe campaign created for the family described Vincent as a “miracle baby” after he survived the ordeal.

“Vincent was declared deceased,” the fundraiser says. “His devastated parents were sent home in unimaginable grief. But God had other plans. A little after 11:30 p.m., the family received a call no one expected: the medical examiner had detected a faint heartbeat.”

According to the fundraiser, Vincent’s kidneys, lungs and liver began shutting down after he arrived at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. An MRI initially identified two small areas of potential brain damage, but later testing reportedly found no brain damage. The fundraiser says Vincent continues to require extensive therapy, ongoing medical monitoring and treatment as he recovers.

Trump Administration’s AI Restrictions Spark Increased Interest in Open Source Models

Recent policy shifts by the Trump administration imposing new restrictions on the release of private AI models are intensifying the call for open-source alternatives.

President Trump’s administration has implemented measures to curb the dissemination of AI models developed by companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. This action includes a regulatory “kill switch” for models under exclusive control of a single organization and built on proprietary data.

Proponents of open-source AI argue that the government’s unprecedented regulations on cutting-edge AI labs might inadvertently benefit China. China is known for providing less expensive, open-source AI models that are available to individuals and businesses globally.

AI specialists are asserting that this scenario shines a light on the importance of bolstering open-source AI development within the United States. Expanding these efforts is seen as crucial to ensuring China doesn’t gain an upper hand due to a dearth of pioneering American AI models.

“Most businesses already function within environments that utilize multiple models and agents. They require a control plane they can manage—and sometimes even own,” commented Felix Van de Maele, CEO of Collibra, a company specializing in data intelligence.

“When a company gets 90 minutes to pull a model deployed to hundreds of millions of people because of a competitor’s complaint, that need becomes urgent fast,” Maele said. “This didn’t create the anxiety we are all experiencing now. It removed any remaining doubt.”

Maele was referring to how the Trump administration gave Anthropic 90 minutes last month to take down its latest Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models after Amazon raised cybersecurity concerns. Anthropic complied with the export control order, and the two models went dark for more than two weeks until the administration lifted the restrictions last week.

The Trump administration later asked OpenAI to delay the public rollout of its new GPT-5.6 series amid similar concerns, though it was not an export control order.

The situation exemplified how private AI firms could be pressed to cut off thousands, if not millions of customers from their models with the flip of a switch.

Unlike private models, open-source models live in the public domain where any individual or business can download and customize them for personal use. These systems can be used, modified, examined and shared with anyone, for any purpose.

Proponents often consider open models to be more transparent, as the entirety of training data, code and process is publicly available.

In some instances, a model may not be open-source, but can have open weights, meaning the ways a model is trained to sift through information and formulate answers are made public.

“You are able to see the weights, you are able to see what is running, how these models are operating,” another AI industry executive told The Hill. The models “allow for deep auditing and safety testing and bias mitigation, whereas closed models are black boxes that are controlled by a private company.”

The Trump administration has increased its oversight over private AI models, in a sharp shift from its light-touch regulatory approach last year.

Trump signed an executive order last month laying out a voluntary process for government testing of models before release. It also called on federal officials to establish safety standards for new AI models meant to supplant state laws and give firms clear guidelines.

While he emphasized no government testing would be mandatory, the pressure put on Anthropic and OpenAI suggested otherwise. Open models can be tested at any point by the government, without a formal process.

OpenAI has two open-weight models called gpt-oss, though they are considered much less powerful or advanced than its private ones.

Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei have long opposed open-weight models, warning during a 2023 Capitol Hill visit that the scaling of open source models is “going down a dangerous path.” He argued private models allow changes after they are deployed, including the revoking of a user’s access.

“When you control a model and you’re deploying it, you have the ability to moderate usage. It might be misused at one point, but then you can alter the model,” he said at the time.

While private models like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are surging in popularity among the public, they are also the priciest and unattainable for companies that do not want to spend tens of thousands of dollars.

The technology and researcher community have long pushed for open-source alongside private models, but experts said the latest events crystallized the need for more open models.

Following the export control order against Fable, Box CEO Aaron Levie said the situation is getting “to the core of one of the central debates” in AI.

“If open weights AI can remain a close second to frontier intelligence, then the equation reverses. With a highly regulated approach, you’ll own the frontier market still, but the vast majority of tokens used will go to an alternative stack,” Levie wrote on X.

“That stack will include the model and the underlying hardware that runs it, in the limit. And that stack will be controlled and monetized by someone else,” he added.

A token is a unit of measurement for AI usage. Costs for running frontier models, and using more tokens in turn, are rising, prompting some enterprises to shift towards cheaper, open-source models.

The so-called “tokenmaxxing,” practice, where users maximize token usage as a way to track productivity, is contributing to the rising costs of these frontier models.

A study from MIT Management earlier this year found open-source models accounted for a fifth of all AI token usage.

Alex Karp, the CEO of technology giant Palantir, recently slammed the token structure being used by frontier labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, pushing instead for open models.

“I’m not throwing shade at them, but something has gone completely wrong and the basic view among enterprises in this country is I’m going to ‘chillax’ and waste my time with tokens, I’m going to get no value and they’re going to take my IP,” Karp said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” last Wednesday.

“What the technical customers want…control over their compute, their models, their data stack and their alpha. They want to know they own the means of production, it’s not being transferred to someone else,” Karp added.

The difference in capabilities between frontier and private models are widely debated. While frontier models may have more advanced use cases, companies looking for specific uses rather than the whole package will turn to cheaper models, experts said.

Vinny Troia, the founder and CEO of intelligence firm Shadow Nexus, said this “price gouging” is more of an incentive to look at open models, telling The Hill, “What’s happening with the White House is only going to further compound the problem.”

In the interim, Chinese open source shows no signs of stopping.

According to research from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, 80 percent of developers around the world who use open-source tools are building with Chinese models.

These companies include U.S.-based firms. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, who said last year that the company is “relying a lot” on Alibaba’s Qwen model, describing it as “very good” and “fast and cheap.”

“We’re starting to see the open models coming out of China…catch up with the frontier, and for a while there’s been this narrative of America winning the AI race. While [the U.S.] has been winning on capability with the best models, we’ve been losing,” said the AI industry executive.

Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson Celebrate Fourth of July Reunion

Khloe Kardashian recently reunited with her former partner, Tristan Thompson, for a family Fourth of July celebration in Idaho. The pair gathered with their children for a festive getaway.

The reality TV star, who had just celebrated her 42nd birthday a few days earlier, attended a local parade in Coeur d’Alene with her eight-year-old daughter, True, and three-year-old son, Tatum.

Standing among the crowd, the 35-year-old former NBA player was also spotted taking part in the holiday festivities.

Embracing the Independence Day spirit, Kardashian wore a lively red shirt emblazoned with ‘USA’ and an American flag.

To complete her festive ensemble, the reality star chose light blue jeans paired with comfortable brown boots.

Her long locks were parted in the middle and cascaded down past her shoulders in light waves. For a final touch, Kardashian also sported a pair of stylish shades.

And while Thompson was present during the celebration, he did not make an appearance in her recent social media snaps.

Kardashian began dating her ex Thompson back in 2016, with the pair welcoming their first child, True, in April 2018.

However, the sports player cheated on the TV personality when she was pregnant with their daughter. After the shock news broke, the pair initially remained together.

The following year in 2019, the two split after Thompson kissed Kylie Jenner’s on-and-off BFF Jordyn Woods at a party, but reconciled during the Covid-19 pandemic after they quarantined together.

In June 2021, the pair once again ended their relationship, while a source told Us Weekly at the time that the stars ‘remain amicable toward each other and will continue to coparent.’

Later that same year, Maralee Nichols sued Thompson for child support after she welcomed their son.

She had become pregnant when Thompson was still dating Kardashian, and after taking a paternity test, it was confirmed that he was the father of the baby boy.

The former basketball pro issued an apology to The Kardashians star, stating ‘you don’t deserve this. You don’t deserve the heartache and humiliation I have caused you.’

And then on July 28, 2022, the pair welcomed their second child, son Tatum, via surrogate.

Back in May during an episode of her Khloe In Wonder Land podcast, Kardashian revealed that both she and Thompson could still have another child together, despite him getting a vasectomy.

The former couple used one of their embryos to welcome son Tatum, and have two embryos left.

Kardashian began dating her ex Thompson back in 2016, with the pair welcoming their first child, True, in April 2018; seen in 2018 in L.A.

Cape Verde Players Look to the Future After Captivating World Cup Debut

0

Cape Verde, a nation few expected to make waves in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defied predictions by advancing past the group stage. Ranked 67th globally in men’s football, the team demonstrated that sheer determination can triumph over daunting odds.

This small archipelago off the West African coast, with a population of merely half a million, undertook an unusual approach to player recruitment by leveraging LinkedIn to connect with its diaspora spread worldwide.

During the group stage, the ‘Blue Sharks’ showcased remarkable resilience, standing firm against powerhouses like Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. However, their commendable journey was halted on Saturday by the defending champions, Argentina, in the round of 32.

Their impressive World Cup run propelled Cape Verde into the global spotlight, emphasizing the strength of a diaspora community that often exceeds the number of people living on the islands themselves.

The real intrigue now lies in discovering the origins of these players and pondering what lies ahead for them in football’s ever-competitive landscape.

The breakout star with no team

Like many Cape Verde residents, goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, better known as Vozinha, left the country to pursue his career, playing professional football for Angola and Portugal among others.

The national team’s 14-year veteran has been the breakout star for the squad, stopping Spain in their tracks with seven saves in Cape Verde’s World Cup debut.

Vozinha now boasts millions of followers on social media, but the 40-year-old has no club to go back to.

Vozinha holds his hand up high wearing a yellow and black goalkeeper kit.

His contract with second-division Portuguese club, Chaves, ended in 2026.

“I ended my contract with my previous club, Deportivo Chaves, and at the moment I still don’t have anything,” Vozinha told a Brazilian journalist.

“I’m open to everything. Let’s see what comes up.”

A shot at the Champions League

Roberto ‘Pico’ Lopes was playing as centre-back for Dublin’s Shamrock Rovers when he received a message on LinkedIn from the Cape Verdean football association.

The Ireland-born player is Cape Verdean on his father’s side. He told Reuters that he initially ignored the message as spam because it was written in Portuguese.

“Nine months later they messaged me back in English asking if I had thought about the proposal, and it was only then that I did what I should have done originally and Google-translated the original message asking if I would be interested in declaring for Cape Verde,” he said.

Pico Lopes celebrates a draw wearing a blue shirt with his arms up in the air while team mates celebrate behind him

A few years earlier, Lopes had been working in a bank while playing part-time football for Irish club Bohemians.

Now, the Shamrock Rovers have a shot at qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, and it’s expected the 34-year-old will head straight back into the action for Wednesday’s match against Malta.

‘Bin bag as curtains’

Striker Sidny Lopes Cabral scored the goal of his career to equalise with Argentina in extra time.

Born in the Netherlands, Cabral spent his youth bouncing around teams in Europe, playing in Sweden and Germany before picking up a contract with Portuguese giant Benfica.

Cabral says his early years in Sweden were tough.

“I called my brother almost every day saying I didn’t like it. The first day it was winter, raining, and I had to train in shorts and a T-shirt. I was so cold,” he told The Guardian.

“My first apartment was empty. I had to put up bin bags as curtains. I was crying.”

These days, Cabral is enjoying warmer climates. In June 2026, he moved to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

‘We’ve put ourselves on the map’

Argentina, who ranked number two in the world and count football great Lionel Messi among its ranks, didn’t have it easy against Cape Verde on Saturday.

An extra-time goal gave Argentina the edge to sprint past the World Cup debutants 3-2 in Miami.

Vozinha told the media his team was leaving with their heads held high.

“We went toe-to-toe with Argentina, fighting on equal terms for an equal result, but couldn’t get it.

“That’s football.”

Despite their failure to advance, Pico told BBC Sport their performance put Cape Verde on the map.

“Nobody asks where Cape Verde is on the map anymore. This is history in itself. We’ve put ourselves on the map,” he said.

“We’re a small nation but with big hearts and we showed what is possible.

“If you believe, you can achieve.”

Uncovered: Police Present New Theory in Sisters Kitty and Cookie Diaz’s Alleged Murder of Caroline Peña

A significant breakthrough has emerged in the case of Caroline “Caro” Pena’s tragic stabbing, allegedly orchestrated by siblings Kitty and Cookie Diaz, police recently announced.

Del Rio Police Chief Frank Ramirez confirmed to TMZ on June 29 that Kitty, 21, Cookie, 19, and their acquaintance Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, were all known to the victim.

All four women resided in Del Rio, Texas. Chief Ramirez indicated that Caroline had a specific reason to visit the home of the suspects where a confrontation took place. He suggested the incident was premeditated, pointing out that investigations are still underway and hypotheses may evolve.

Commenting on the images of the sisters smiling during their arrest, Ramirez expressed to TMZ, “It appeared heartless and, in situations like this, you would expect a bit more remorse. It looked callous.”

Caroline, a mother to five children, was stabbed to death on June 25. Later that day, body camera footage captured by the New York Post showed Kitty and Cookie, wearing revealing outfits, being led into police vehicles while smiling and laughing.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by the New York Post, Renee told police that Caroline had driven to her home that night, “looking to start a fight.”

Footage allegedly showed Cookie exiting her car with an object believed to be a knife and confronting Caroline, according to the complaint. Cookie was then seen striking Caroline in the back as blood soaked her shirt. Meanwhile, Kitty and Renee allegedly beat her before running away.

Body camera footage of the sisters’ arrest—and their seemingly upbeat attitudes—later went viral.

“I saw the first girl going into the car, and I thought, ‘Whatever,’” journalist Michael Elizondo, who responded to the scene, told the New York Post. “But the second one caught my eye. That girl was in a happy mood. She was all smiling, goofing off like nothing happened.”

He added, “All of the sudden I see the window go down, and the girl was sticking out her face, sticking out her tongue and goofing off.”

Caroline’s nephew drove her to the hospital, according to the Post, where she later died from her injuries.

Top 5 Fantasy TV Shows That Surpass House Of The Dragon in Entertainment Value

“House of the Dragon” is making waves with its third season, carrying on the legacy of George R.R. Martin’s tales with flair. As anticipated from a significant HBO endeavor, the show is grand in scale, and the unfolding storylines are as intense as the name suggests. The battles within the Targaryen family remain a focal point of fascination; however, can the series truly claim the title of the supreme fantasy saga? It seems “House of the Dragon” still has quite a journey if it aims to seize that accolade.

The fantasy genre is currently teeming with notable series, and while “House of the Dragon” stands out as compelling and even remarkable — evidenced by its impressive 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes — it hasn’t yet become the most talked-about show in the genre. For those seeking fantasy series that go beyond what “House of the Dragon” offers, Looper suggests these five compelling alternatives.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” arguably sits atop the animated fantasy adventure hierarchy. This Nickelodeon masterpiece by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko explores a universe where different nations excel in bending elemental forces. From start to finish, it captures viewers with intricate storytelling and memorable characters. The tale of Aang (voiced by Zach Tyler Eisen), the youthful airbender destined for greatness, unfolds into a profound saga enriched by a dynamic ensemble cast, each character deeply developed with distinct aspirations.

Skillfully intertwining gripping plots, complex character dynamics, humor, and poignant themes, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is a must-watch for any fantasy enthusiast. Though Netflix offers a live-action version, for an authentic experience, the original animated series is unparalleled. Boasting a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s a prime example of animated storytelling.

For those looking to delve deeper into the franchise, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” provides an extensive collection of additional content worthy of exploration and an outstanding spin-off sequel, “The Legend of Korra.” However, it is advisable to steer clear of M. Night Shyamalan’s poorly received 2010 film adaptation to fully appreciate the rich universe of the original series.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

If you like George R.R. Martin’s work but the comparatively highbrow “House of the Dragon” leaves you high and dry when it comes to the grassroots elements of his stories, you will absolutely want to check out “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” The entire premise of the show is based around the eternally entertaining “two mismatched buddies travel around” narrative that provided “Game of Thrones” with some of its most entertaining storylines.

An adaptation of Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” stories about lowly hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his highborn squire, Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell), “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is a gritty but unabashedly comedic show about life in the muddy roads and crowded tourney tents of Westeros. Instead of dragons and magic, much of the show’s stakes come simply from the lack of resources at Dunk’s disposal. The giant man is of low birth but high moral ground, which is an incredibly dangerous combination. As such, he tends to survive solely on luck, personal grit, and the goodwill of his betters.

The unconventional hero and the prince who wants to slum about as his squire are a captivating buddy pairing. With legitimately amazing performances from Claffey and Ansell — not to mention a stellar supporting cast led by Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon — the show has a well-deserved 94% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Magicians

Syfy’s “The Magicians” is based on Lev Grossman’s book series, and it provides a contemporary approach to the fantasy genre that still gives the viewer plenty of amazing elements and plot developments to mull over. The show begins with a Harry Potter-esque premise of a young man named Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) finding out that he has supernatural talents and enrolling at the Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. This, however, turns out to be the luxury route to magic; Quentin’s friend Julia (Stella Maeve) is less fortunate and has to rough it out by studying magic as a hedge witch.

“The Magicians” delivers the best of both worlds for fans of contemporary supernatural stories and outlandish fantasy tales. It divides its time between its version of the normal world and an enchanted land known as Fillory, which is far more dangerous than its whimsical name might make you imagine. The show starts out strong and delivers an interesting take on the magical school trope, doing the job so well that its five-season run has a 91% Tomatometer rating. By the time you reach the ending of “The Magicians,” you’ve been through a rollercoaster of a story that doesn’t always go in the directions that you’d expect.

Outlander

“Outlander” is a foray into more conventional historical fantasy, though this adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s novels approaches the subject in a very unconventional fashion. Our protagonist is Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a former World War II nurse who mysteriously ends up time traveling into the mid-18th century and falling for Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). This is problematic for a multitude of reasons, not least because she’s already married in her own time.

Though very much a fantasy, the show defies genres and happily switches tones between romance, adventure drama, and very George R.R. Martin-style brutality. Much of that last part comes courtesy of Tobias Menzies. He’s seen here in the dual role of Claire’s husband Frank and his evil ancestor Black Jack Randall, a stellar and utterly chilling villain turn that’ll surprise many “Game of Thrones” fans who remember him as the hapless Edmure Tully.

With eight seasons and countless twisty developments, “Outlander” has much to offer for those who appreciate its particular flavor of the fantasy genre. Those who are wary of jumping in because of the heavy romance element shouldn’t worry, either; A show this long-running is only able to retain a 91% Tomatometer rating if it’s very, very good across the board.

Game of Thrones

If we’re talking about “House of the Dragon,” of course the original has to be here as well. the granddaddy of all George R.R. Martin shows changed the small-screen fantasy game regardless of how you feel about all the things that went wrong with “Game of Thrones” by its final season. There’s no denying that the majority of the show is great — and let’s be honest, even that controversial final season is appointment viewing just to see how things wrap up .

“Game of Thrones” is many things, but most of all, it’s a show that lives to the credo of valar morghulis. All men must die, and the show makes sure that most of them indeed do by the end. “Game of Thrones” is a show that has absolutely no problem killing its main character during Season 1, let alone providing satisfying deaths of hated characters. It puts pretty much all of its key figures through an absolute wringer over the years, and only a small handful of them live to see the series finale.

While some of the series’ unpredictability loses steam over the course of eight seasons, precious few other shows can match the sheer brutal intensity of great plot twists like the infamous Red Wedding, or incredible combat sequences like the Battle of the Bastards. As such, it has an impressive 89% Tomatometer rating, even with its badly-reviewed Season 8 factoring in the score.

Severe Fourth of July Storms: Acts of Heroism Amid Disrupted Celebrations

As crowds gathered at parks and lakes throughout the Tri-Cities to celebrate the 4th of July and America250, severe weather played an unexpected role, disrupting festivities across the region.

In Bristol, Tennessee, the city officials made the decision to postpone their fireworks display to Sunday night. According to Jon Luttrell, the City of Bristol Director of Community Relations, the sudden and intense storm took everyone by surprise. “Really out of nowhere, we had an extremely strong storm system that materialized just right over top of Bristol,” Luttrell remarked. The storm brought with it powerful winds and heavy rainfall, descending rapidly and forcing many outdoor activities to a halt.

“Really out of nowhere, we had an extremely strong storm system that materialized just right over top of Bristol,” Luttrell said. “We saw extremely strong winds and a tremendous amount of rain that fell in just a very short amount of time.”

Luttrell added that first responders were responding to calls as soon as the storm hit. From traffic accidents to power outages throughout various parts of the city.

“That really caught all of our emergency responders into action and pulled them away from the activities downtown,” he said. “In that regard, it’s probably for the best that we weren’t able to move forward with the fireworks because we wouldn’t have had the personnel on hand needed for that.”

Luttrell told News Channel 11 that crews in Bristol will be working throughout the week to repair any damage caused by the storm.

On their way home from festivities, many motorists on Highway 381 were suddenly stopped by a tree on the roadway. Several civilians worked to move the tree from the road.

Jim Bean, Director of the Sullivan County EMA, said most of the damage was in the eastern part of the county.

“We’ve got reports of some vehicles being stuck, maybe a couple of house,” Bean said. “But no major damage and no injuries reported.”

Bean added that crews were working to repair and replace any downed power lines that have affected customers ‘ ability to get power.

“I know it’s probably frustrating for people that have been affected with it, especially with the temperature starting to increase,” Bean said. “But they are all with electric companies and are out in full force.”

Why Mallory McMorrow Halted Her Bid for Michigan Senate: Inside the Decision

0

Washington — Over the weekend, State Senator Mallory McMorrow declared the suspension of her Senate campaign, thereby reducing the number of Democratic contenders ahead of the fiercely contested August primary, a race crucial for influencing the upper chamber’s power dynamics.

“While I am putting a pause on this campaign, my commitment to the cause remains unwavering,” McMorrow stated in her announcement on X, sharing her resolve with her supporters.

McMorrow had been an active participant in the primary race following Sen. Gary Peters’ decision not to run for re-election in the pivotal Great Lakes State. She was competing against Rep. Haley Stevens and former Michigan health official Abdul El-Sayed for the Democratic nod, with the race becoming increasingly contentious due to internal party disagreements in recent times.

In this divisive race, Stevens has garnered support from national Democratic leaders, while El-Sayed has gained traction with progressives. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez threw her weight behind El-Sayed last week, marking this election as a crucial showdown in the ongoing debate over the Democratic Party’s future direction, following similar upset victories in New York and Colorado.

In the wake of McMorrow’s exit, both El-Sayed and Stevens released statements commending her contributions and dedication to the campaign.

“Throughout this campaign, you showed what it looks like to fight back against a politics that rigs the system against too many of us,” El-Sayed wrote, in part, in a reply to the video where McMorrow announced her decision. “While we have policy disagreements, I never questioned whether you would fight for a better America for my daughters and yours.”

“Anyone who raises their hand to serve the people of Michigan and puts forward thoughtful ideas for how they would lead earns my respect,” Stevens wrote, in part, adding that she “looks forward to work with (McMorrow) in the future to build a stronger Michigan for everyone.”

The primary is set for Aug. 4. In her post, McMorrow pledged to support whomever wins the Democratic nomination, who will take on former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers in the general election. Rogers narrowly lost his bid for Michigan’s other Senate seat to Sen. Elissa Slotkin in the last election.

Republicans currently have a majority in the Senate, with 53 members. Democrats are hoping to win control of the chamber this fall. But doing so would mean flipping four seats and defending seats in a handful of other races.

The Senate seat in Michigan, a state which has flipped between supporting Democrats and Republican presidents in recent elections, is considered among the most vulnerable for Democrats this cycle. The Cook Political Report rates Michigan as a toss-up.
