Stephanie Seymour: Navigating Two Marriages on the Path to Happiness

Even for a renowned supermodel like Stephanie Seymour, the journey of love was fraught with difficulties. Today, she enjoys a harmonious marriage with Peter Brant, her second husband, but the path to this happiness was rocky. The couple even filed for divorce at one point, adding a layer of drama to their relationship story.

Let’s rewind to Seymour’s marriage to her first husband, guitarist Tommy Andrews. Their union lasted a brief year, from 1989 to 1990, during which they welcomed their son, Dylan Thomas Andrews. Despite this milestone, the marriage was already unraveling by the time their son was born. Details around their split remain sparse, as Seymour has chosen to remain private about the cause. After the separation, Seymour’s romantic fate led her to Axl Rose, another musician renowned for his turbulent lifestyle. Recalling her relationship with Harper’s Bazaar in 2014, Seymour described it as a “clear mistake.” She elaborated, saying, “He was prone to violence, and I never wanted that in my life again. The rock ‘n’ roll allure faded as I witnessed the dark side of that world.” Their volatile relationship ended in the early ’90s. Rose later filed a lawsuit against Seymour in 1993, with his sister claiming they were engaged, but Seymour had allegedly assaulted him at a Christmas party in 1992. Through a representative, Seymour denied any engagement and expressed her desire to leave the past behind.

Eventually, Seymour discovered love anew with Peter Brant, tying the knot in 1994. The couple welcomed three children—two sons and a daughter—and outwardly enjoyed domestic bliss. Nonetheless, their relationship hit a rough patch, culminating in a filed divorce which they later reconsidered.

Stephanie Seymour’s almost-divorce played out very publicly

In 2009, Stephanie Seymour filed for divorce from Peter Brant, but far from keeping things amicable, things got ugly right from the start. For one, per the New York Post Seymour alleged Brant was going out of his way to intimidate her, even preventing her from fetching their daughter from school and changing the locks at their home in Greenwich, Connecticut. Insiders also told Page Six Seymour had to sleep in the housekeeper’s quarters, and that Brant was fighting for full custody.

The legal proceedings between Seymour and Brant became contentious, marked by mutual accusations. Brant alleged that Seymour mishandled their art collection, while Seymour claimed he left her without financial resources by cutting off her credit card. Despite these conflicts, in 2010, they withdrew the divorce petition, as revealed in a terse statement to ABC News, which simply stated, “The parties have withdrawn their divorce action.” Reflecting on the tumultuous period, Seymour told Town & Country that external pressures had exacerbated their issues. “The ‘dirty fight’ focuses on victory rather than healing,” she explained, attributing much of the conflict to legal counsel rather than their own voices. A direct conversation with Brant paved the way for open communication, where Seymour expressed, “I have faith in you and hope reciprocally, trusting that we can resolve this together.”

Brant shared Seymour’s sentiments, leading them to seek therapy and ultimately fortify their partnership. Despite enduring profound heartaches, such as the devastating death of their son, Harry Brant, the couple has remained strong together through it all.

Labor Concession on Controversial Aged Care Initiative Fails to Satisfy Critics

0

The federal government has decided to modify its contentious Integrated Assessment Tool (IAT) for aged care, responding to backlash from advocacy groups, aged care providers, and political figures.

Introduced in July 2024, the IAT is designed to evaluate the care needs of elderly Australians, determining who qualifies for government-funded support services.

This tool utilizes an algorithm to process survey data, automatically issuing determinations on the level of funding assistance and care priority. However, the government is now enhancing the human decision-making aspect of these assessments.

During an interview on ABC radio’s National Breakfast on Thursday, aged care minister Sam Rae explained, “In some limited circumstances, people’s complex situations don’t neatly align with the framework.”

He further emphasized, “In these rare instances, we want the system governor to have the authority to make vital decisions, ensuring the best possible outcomes for older individuals.”

“We’ve listened, and we’ve done the policy work to make sure that we get the best outcomes for older people.”

Based on the changes, “if in the assessment organisation’s clinical view the needs of the older person aren’t catered for through the tool”, then they will have the “option to escalate that to the system governor”.

Also on Thursday morning, the Coalition, Greens, and independent senator David Pocock teamed up, putting up a bill opposing IAT and asking for more human intervention in the system.

Anne Ruston, the Opposition’s health and NDIS spokesperson, told the Senate that the bill “restores a simple principle: decisions about care should be made by a qualified person, a qualified professional, not a computer algorithm with no human capacity”.

“This bill ensures the tool supports, not replaces, professional judgement,” she said.

“Minister Rae’s rapid view is a damning admission that the tool is failing, yet he has ruled out reinstating human override while only tinkering around the edges.”

Labor senator Nita Green said that “while the government shares the intent of this private senator’s bill, as it’s currently drafted, we’re not able to support its passage”.

“We’re concerned that in practice, its provisions will be counterproductive.”

The IAT has faced mounting criticism over the role of an algorithm in determining older Australians’ care priority levels, and whether there is enough scope for human judgement when the system gets it wrong.

In June, SBS News interviewed Lynne Meehan, whose 91-year-old father, John Wilson, was diagnosed with sepsis last year and needed aged-care support. Although the tool approved him for a Level 7 package, it classified him as low priority, leaving him facing a 10-month wait. Wilson died in late April, three weeks before his funding came through.

As of March 2026, 989 people have requested a review of their outcome, up from 178 in the 2024-25 financial year under the old system. Of the 606 finalised cases, 132 needed reassessing.

Peter Thiel’s Stark Warning: Are Democratic Socialists Poised to Dominate the Democratic Party?

0

In a surprising move, billionaire Peter Thiel addressed a predominantly progressive audience at the Aspen Institute’s Ideas Festival, cautioning them about the growing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party.

Thiel, speaking during a panel focused on humanity’s future trajectory, expressed concerns over the cultural, technological, and economic “stagnation” that has unfolded over recent years, describing it as “very destabilizing” for the long term.

He asserted that the chaotic results of this stagnation have seeped into the political sphere.

“My generation was the first to really feel the impact of things becoming stagnant,” Thiel remarked. “It seems millennials are struggling more than their boomer parents, and this issue is even more pronounced among Gen Z.”

He elaborated, stating, “When we consider this politically, it compels us to seek solutions beyond this exceedingly limited framework.”

“And then, there was the Republican version that manifested with Trump and a repudiation of Bush-neocon consensus.”

“And I think the Democratic version, to those of you who are, you know, the liberal Democrats in the audience, that I ask you to take more seriously, is I think there’s going to be a democratic socialist takeover in the Democratic Party,” Thiel said.

“And it’s not just a irrational, angry outburst. It is this really, really deep frustration at this stagnation.”

The billionaire’s comments drew audible gasps among the progressive attendees.

“And the Republican Party doesn’t matter that much because it’s the less important one. When the Democratic Party goes, this country is over,” Thiel added.

The comments come just weeks after three democratic socialist House candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani swept their races in the New York primaries.

And hours after Thiel’s comments, another Democratic socialist named Melat Kiros won the Democratic primary in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, unseating 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette.

Thiel, who first made waves on the political scene as a primetime speaker at the 2016 RNC convention, has become a prominent donor to Republicans in recent election cycles. He notably was a major backer of Vice President JD Vance during his 2022 Senate run.

The PayPal founder also spoke passionately about the importance for the US to lean into AI and repeatedly attacked those who he sees are obstacles to societal and economic progress.

“If we just have this economic stagnation, that’s the road toward total catastrophe,” Thiel said.

“I’m extremely alarmed about a tendency to slow it down or stop [AI] because I think the alternative is not the world ending with a whimper. It is zero-sum, Malthusian, deranged politics. People get angrier and angrier. It’s not going to work.”

Shocking Discovery: Missing Man Case Unravels with Arrests and Body Found on Army Base

An investigation into a disappearance case in Washington has been reclassified as a murder investigation after human remains were located on a military installation. This development has resulted in the arrest of two individuals, one of whom is a currently serving member of the armed forces.

The inquiry was set in motion on June 12 when the Tacoma Police Department registered a missing person report for Caelick Bradley, a 28-year-old local whose last known sighting occurred on June 8, according to information from the Washington State Patrol.

Tacoma investigators uncovered evidence that someone unauthorized was making use of Bradley’s credit card. This led them to identify a suspect: Humberto Rodriguez Hernandez.

While being questioned by the authorities, Hernandez revealed information regarding a homicide that occurred on Addision Street SW in Lakewood, a neighboring city, as conveyed by officials from the Lakewood Police Department to News Media.

He subsequently led detectives to human remains in a publicly accessible training area on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) property near Spanaway, Washington.

Authorities said Hernandez also implicated a second suspect, Aydee Casado-Dominguez, who was later detained outside her home.

Both Hernandez and Casado-Dominguez have been charged with homicide and booked into the Pierce County Jail, LPD officials said.

In a statement provided to News Media, Joint Base Lewis-McChord confirmed the discovery of the remains and revealed that one of the two suspects taken into custody by the Tacoma Police Department is a service member currently assigned to JBLM.

The Army Criminal Investigation Division is now working closely with both the Tacoma and Lakewood police departments on the ongoing investigation.

While the remains were found following the investigation into Bradley’s disappearance, official identification and the cause of death are pending an examination by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The exact date of the homicide remains unclear.

Virginia Teacher’s Family Confirms Tragic Loss During Peru Hiking Trip

0

Tragedy has struck as a 29-year-old English teacher from Virginia, known for his adventurous spirit, was discovered dead after embarking on a climbing expedition up Nevado Ausangate, Peru’s fifth-highest peak, approximately a month ago.

Ian Thomas Treger, the teacher in question, was no stranger to challenging terrains, having tackled some of the world’s most arduous hiking paths.

Michelle Ludwig, Treger’s mother, recounted to the Daily Mail how her son departed from his Airbnb on May 13. Concern mounted when nearly two weeks passed without any word from him, prompting her to notify local authorities.

In a poignant moment, Ludwig shared with the Daily Mail that her son’s body was eventually located near the trail he had set out to conquer.

“A shepherd, who tends to fields alongside his alpacas, found my son yesterday,” Ludwig revealed, highlighting the somber discovery.

‘The police told us it was a hiking accident and that he was by himself. I don’t understand how this could’ve happened. He was a very capable hiker and is used to high-altitude trails.’

Authorities with the High Mountain Police in Peru said a decomposed body with blond hair and clothing similar to ones that belonged to Treger was found in an ‘advanced state of decomposition’ beside a small stream on June 30.

The remains were found by a small stream just north of the trail within the jurisdiction of the Pitumarca district in the Cusco province of Canchis.

Family members said Iam Treger's remains were found not too far off the trail that he had planned to climb at Nevado Ausangate, the fifth highest mountain in Peru

Ludwig flew to Peru and had been closely tracking the search for her son for the past two weeks.

She said she had hoped for better news but police said they will continue to investigate what exactly happened to her son.

‘They have ruled out foul play,’ she told the Daily Mail. ‘His things were found near him and nothing seemed to be missing.’

Ludwig said her son’s backpack was found near the remains, including his expensive camera gear, film, wallet, iPhone and other hiking items.

‘They have no conclusion about it yet,’ an emotional Ludwig said. ‘They are investigating, but this is the kind of hike he’s done many times before. He’s done it in Tasmania and drove across the Australian outback.

‘He was just at the high altitude when he was at the [Josè Rivas Refuge on the Cotopaxi Volcano] in Ecuador, which is 15,000 feet. I’m in shock but we still don’t know what happened.’

Peruvian authorities sent out a missing persons alert for Treger on June 11, but his mother told the Daily Mail that she told police she had not heard from her son since May 26

Ludwig and Treger’s father, Neil, released a statement to the media thanking local authorities for searching for their son:

‘It is with profound sadness that we share that Ian’s body has been found in Peru. Our hearts are broken, and we are still absorbing this devastating loss. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the U.S. and Peruvian authorities who worked tirelessly on this search, as well as to the volunteers who gave their time, energy, and compassion in the effort to bring Ian home.

‘We are also deeply grateful to everyone who held Ian and our family in their prayers throughout this ordeal. Your faith, support, and kindness have meant more to us than words can express. Ian had a deep curiosity about the world and he loved learning new cultures and history, whether it was immersing himself with his beloved German host family, hiking across the world, or seeking out a museum in a new city.’

Treger grew up in Effinger, Virginia, where he was a Boy Scout and eventually became an Eagle Scout.

He obtained a Wilderness First Aid certification while attending Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

During his senior year, he led one of the school’s Appalachian Adventure trips before graduating in 2020.

According to his Instagram profile, Treger was very well-traveled, with his last post showing him in Ecuador on April 16.

When asked where her son’s passion for adventure came from, the doting mother said: ‘I think it was genetic from my mother. She would say we aren’t lost, we are on a new adventure.’

Ludwig said her son traveled to Peru after wrapping up his teaching year at Ecuador’s Galápagos Language Academy.

She said her son wanted to experience Jubilee Month, a month-long celebration in Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes.

‘Ian loved discovering new countries through their songs and traditions as much as their landscapes,’ the family said in their statement. ‘Through all of it, he kept the same quick wit and easy smile that could turn any moment lighter, and that made him so loved by everyone who knew him.

‘We cannot imagine our world without Ian in it.’

The family is now making arrangements to bring Treger’s remains back to the US.

Florida Woman Fatally Shoots Army Veteran in Walmart Parking Dispute

0

A man originally hailing from New Jersey, who once served in the US Army, was tragically shot and killed by a woman during a dispute over a parking space outside a Walmart in Florida.

The victim, Bart Diguglielmo, who had retired from the US Army as a Staff Sergeant, was shot by an unidentified woman just outside the North Lauderdale Walmart on Tuesday shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that a “verbal altercation” over a parking spot between the 62-year-old Diguglielmo and the woman escalated into the fatal encounter.

The shooter, a female whose identity has not yet been disclosed, told police that she fired the shot in self-defense.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the woman became hysterical as officers began investigating the shooting incident.

“I was walking up and heard a lady screaming,” David Anderson told CBS News Miami. “She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things.”

Video shared on social media captured the alleged dispute, as a woman wearing a white shirt stepped out of her car with a gun in her hand, talking back to a man, believed to be Diguglielmo, wearing a gray shirt, who had walked up on her.

The two shoppers repeatedly pointed at each other during the argument and, at one point, the man put both his arms in the air as they stood in an empty parking space, according to video obtained by WPLG.

Diguglielmo appears to follow the woman around another car as she aims the gun at him before a single gunshot rings out and he collapses to the ground.

The gunshot victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Diguglielmo’s sister described her brother as a decorated veteran during Operation Desert Storm, according to CBS News Miami.

A native of Hammonton, New Jersey, Diguglielmo served as a combat nurse, combat medic and tactical communications expert, according to his Facebook profile.

“He was a Christian man and a very good person and would not hurt anyone,” the sibling, whose name was not revealed, said.

Diguglielmo, who lived in Lauderhill, Florida, was also a retired nurse, his sister said.

Officials have withheld the name of the woman.

The Broward County State Attorney’s Office will determine if she will be charged following the police investigation.

Mexican National Sentenced in Case of THC-Infused Candy Smuggling at the Border Involving Minors

0

In another significant legal development, a Mexican national received a five-year federal prison sentence on Wednesday. The individual admitted involvement in a human smuggling scheme that reportedly used THC-infused candy to tranquilize young children, as young as 5, during their journey across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Federal prosecutors revealed that one child endured THC poisoning and required hospitalization after ingesting the drug-laden candy in the course of the smuggling operation.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Manuel Valenzuela, entered a guilty plea last November. His charges included one count of conspiracy to transport aliens, three counts of illegally bringing aliens into the United States for financial profit, and one count of aiding and abetting.

Valenzuela was one of four people charged last year in the alleged smuggling scheme. Prosecutors accused the group of transporting unaccompanied children between the ages of 5 and 13 from Juárez, Mexico, into the United States.

According to court documents, the smugglers presented U.S. identification documents to border officers while falsely claiming the children were their own parents.

Prosecutors said the children were then transported to El Paso after crossing the border.

Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division condemned the scheme, saying, “Needing to sedate children with THC under the guise of giving them candy shows just how heinous crimes like this are.”

“Smuggling unaccompanied children into the country, pretending to be their parents, and then lying to U.S. immigration officials shows the lengths to which criminals like this will go to smuggle children across our borders,” Duva continued. “The Criminal Division and our law enforcement partners will put an end to this conduct. Protecting children and keeping our borders safe go hand-in-hand.”

Acting Special Agent in Charge Ryan McRae of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) El Paso said using children in smuggling operations shows a “total disregard for human life and safety.”

Federal prosecutors allege smugglers used THC-laced candy to sedate children as young as 5 before bringing them across the U.S.-Mexico border. (Department of Justice)

“Using THC-infused candy to facilitate the smuggling of children across the border into the United States is reprehensible and cruel and puts vulnerable minors at serious risk,” McRae said. “HSI will relentlessly pursue transnational criminal organizations responsible for these heinous tactics and bring them to justice.”

According to the criminal complaint, the smuggling events took place between May 1 and Oct. 18, 2024.

Prosecutors said proof-of-life photographs of some of the children were recovered from the suspects’ cellphones.

Alicia Keys Shines Alongside Jay Z and Mike Tyson at Exclusive Celebrity Bash

Alicia Keys, Mike Tyson, and Jay Z were among the elite attendees at billionaire Michael Rubin’s glamorous Hamptons White Party, which made a grand return on Wednesday night.

Rumors swirled that the “If I Ain’t Got You” singer, who is 45, might perform at the highly exclusive Independence Day celebration, hosted by the Fanatics mogul at his massive $50 million estate close to Bridgehampton, Long Island.

Alicia Keys sparkled in a dazzling jumpsuit as she socialized with guests such as Shaboozey, known for blending country and hip-hop. The gathering took place on the expansive terrace of the luxurious home that Rubin shares with his fiancée, model Camille Fischel, and their two young daughters.

Adding to the star-studded event was rapper Jay Z, seen sporting a black Yankees cap and sunglasses while engaging with friends in a more secluded area of the estate, offering a stunning view of the beach.

In a jovial mood, former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was relaxing with rapper French Montana. This comes just a day after Tyson celebrated his landmark 60th birthday.

And in an exclusive Daily Mail photo, Colombian American actress Sofia Vergara, 53, appeared the picture of elegance in an off-the-shoulder patterned gown as she strode into Rubin’s glass-fronted home accompanied by her businessman boyfriend, Douglas Chabbott, 39.

Elsewhere at the party, former MLB player Alex Rodriguez, 50, was pictured in a cozy clinch with a mystery brunette – just weeks after splitting from his fitness instructor girlfriend of several years, Jaclyn Cordeiro.

Earlier, glammed-up guests clad in varying shades of white pulled up to Rubin’s mansion from 5pm in a steady of stream of blacked-out SUVs.

Partygoers were required to check in with staff at a small stand on the street before security staff surrounding the mansion allowed their vehicles to enter and drive them to the front door.

The white-themed soiree at Rubin’s 8,1000 sq feet manse is the summer’s most exclusive event, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, sport and social media receiving the coveted invite.

Previous editions of the party have drawn the likes of Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber and A-list actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

The billionaire’s Gatsby-esque event – which had a brief hiatus last year – usually takes place around July 3 or 4 but this year was moved to July 1.

The Daily Mail learned Rubin, 53, had shifted the party date to prevent overshadowing the blockbuster wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, which looks to be happening at Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden on Friday.

But sources told TMZ Rubin chose July 1 to avoid a possible clash with the UFC’s White House event, which was initially slated for Independence Day.

Nevertheless, it seems at least one of Swift and Kelce’s wedding guests took advantage of the opportunity to attend two of the summer’s glitziest events in one week.

Suki Waterhouse, the English actress and singer and a close friend of Swift’s, was spotted making a quick entrance as she was driven to the front door in a blacked-out SUV – seemingly without her actor fiancé and baby daddy, Robert Pattinson.

Waterhouse – who made a brief appearance on the balcony before vanishing inside the property – confirmed she will attending Swift and Kelce’s nuptials this weekend.

The actress Emma Roberts was also spotted being swept into the bash and was later pictured chatting happily with fellow guests.

Internet stars Jake and Logan Paul also attended the bash with their respective partners, Jutta Leerdam, a 27-year-old Dutch Olympic speed skater and the model Nina Agdal, 34.

The Paul brothers also scored invites to Rubin’s intimate BBQ for friends and associates on Tuesday evening, where they mingled with other guests including the Canadian model Winnie Harlow, 31, and New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns, 30.

The Daily Mail ran exclusive photographs of WWE star Logan Paul chatting with social media star Alix Earle, 25, in what appeared to be a truce after a previously awkward tiff, for which he apologized.

Also among the White Party guests were Olivia Dunne, the ex-gymnast turned actress and social media personality, singer-songwriter Teyana Taylor, rapper DJ Khaled and actress Tiffany Haddish.

Attendees were treated to food from Lucali, the iconic Brooklyn pizza parlor – likely to be just one of a string of sumptuous cuisines on offer.

In previous years, Rubin reportedly laid on spreads from some of New York’s best eateries, including wagyu beef and truffle salt rolls from Nobu, summer tomato salads from Cucina Alba and Raos’ famous meatballs.

Partygoers were seen mingling in multiple areas of the mansion, including an elevated front outdoor terrace which wrapped around to the back of the mansion overlooking the beach.

As the sun began to set, the property’s roof deck – which was set up with staging and DJ decks ready for the evening’s performances – was illuminated with colorful lights.

As night fell, an announcement was made from the property’s roof deck urging guests to make their way downstairs for ‘a lot of different experiences’.

Downstairs, there was a black tent housing a makeshift dancefloor, complete with a full bar and nightclub lighting for Rubin’s celebrity guests to party into the small hours.

Back on the beach, a vessel was spotted in the water, thought to be for the firework display that has become a firm fixture of Rubin’s annual Fourth of July gathering.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling Announces Retirement: A New Era for CPD Begins

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Veteran Superintendent Larry Snelling has revealed his plan to retire from the Chicago Police Department, closing a chapter on a career spanning over three decades.

The announcement came on Wednesday, with Snelling specifying that his departure from the force would be effective as of July 15.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Snelling delivered the news via a heartfelt letter, shared through the Chicago Police Department’s social media channels on Wednesday afternoon.

Having assumed the role of superintendent in 2023, Snelling played a significant part in reducing Chicago’s crime rate, with noteworthy declines reported annually under his leadership.

In his farewell message, Snelling expressed deep gratitude, stating, “I am closing out this chapter of my life with a heart full of gratitude for every Chicagoan and every community partner who embraced me during my time at the Chicago Police Department. Thank you does not fully express my appreciation for you, the people of Chicago.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also posted a statement about Snelling’s departure Wednesday afternoon.

Accolades began pouring in within minutes of Supt. Snelling announcing his retirement, but the decision has also raised questions about the department’s leadership as the city heads into the summer months.

Just six weeks ago, Snelling addressed persistent rumors that he was preparing to retire.

“In this profession, we ask a lot of people, and we give a lot, but I can tell you right now, rumors are rumors,” Snelling said at the time.

While the announcement was not entirely unexpected, its timing comes as the traditionally more violent summer period is getting underway.

“As things get increasingly hot. As these street takeovers and teen trends continue in the City of Chicago who is going to be at the helm of the police department,” said Ald. Ray Lopez of the 15th Ward.

The announcement has also fueled speculation that a tense relationship with Mayor Brandon Johnson may have played a role in Snelling’s decision.

“Everything at news affairs ran through the fifth floor of City Hall before it came out at 35th and Michigan,” said John Catanzara, president of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Several members of the City Council praised Snelling’s career and leadership following the announcement.

“He is the epitome of from the mud up. He attended Englewood High School. Went into the force at the age of 22,” said Ald. Stephanie Coleman of the 16th Ward.

“We’ve had some very good superintendents over the last 30-40 years. Nobody better than Larry Snelling,” said Ald. Matt O’Shea of the 19th Ward.

Snelling became superintendent less than three years ago. Before that, he served as commander of the 7th District in Englewood, the same district where he began his career as a police officer. He led the department during a period when violent crime numbers were at record lows and oversaw public safety efforts during the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

“He was vital to seamlessly merging CPD’s local footprint with the Secret Service’s security plan,” said Peter Vogl, assistant special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Chicago Field Office.

Mayor Johnson thanked Snelling for his service and said Fred Waller will once again take over as interim superintendent. Some, however, question how long Waller will remain in the role, with the mayoral election seven months away.

“No one is going to keep this job thinking that there is no career path. We will be stuck with a placeholder,” Lopez said.

Snelling’s last day on the job is set for July 15. After that, the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability will begin the search process for his replacement.
