Imagine two math enthusiasts embroiled in a legal showdown involving a 20-year marriage minus a prenup, and an $80 billion hedge fund. Together, these add up to New Jersey’s largest divorce case and potentially the third-biggest divorce settlement recorded in history.
The high-stakes divorce drama between billionaire investor John Overdeck and his estranged wife, Laura Overdeck, has recently taken center stage as it unfolds in a New Jersey family court.
John Overdeck, the 56-year-old visionary behind the Manhattan-based hedge fund Two Sigma, is locked in a fierce legal battle. He is striving to avoid a $6.2 billion payout that Laura, his soon-to-be former wife, claims is rightfully hers in what has become a contentious separation.
Should Laura Overdeck emerge victorious in this legal contest and secure the staggering amount, their divorce would only be surpassed by the splits of Bill and Melinda Gates, as well as Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott, in terms of costliness on the US divorce leaderboard.
Nevertheless, John Overdeck is staunchly opposing his wife’s assertion that his investment in the hedge fund constitutes a marital asset. He testified on Wednesday, arguing that he cannot solely be credited with the firm’s remarkable success.
He claimed she deserved a much smaller share than she was demanding — and that the approximately $600 million settlement he offered her should be enough.
“Laura, I think, was alongside me for all of this, and I think it is fair that she received some amount of the appreciation, the net appreciation that occurred during the marriage,” he said.
“On reflection, I think that $600 million approximately is a fair amount of that appreciation for her to receive in final judgment.”
Throughout their marriage, he claimed he was always “prompt” in sharing the fruits of his investment successes with his wife in a joint account, “so much so that she was able to withdraw $75 million the day before she filed for divorce.”
“We lived a comfortable life on that money,” he told the court.
The pair’s long path to a nondescript Newark courtroom began more than two decades ago, with a romance that seemed so rock-solid they married with an announcement in the New York Times’ wedding page — and without a prenuptial agreement.
A preternatural math talent from Maryland, John Overdeck won the silver medal at the International Mathematics Olympiad when he was 16 and graduated from Stanford University at the tender age of 19.
Overdeck soon delved into the hedge fund world, working with a young Jeff Bezos at DE Shaw & Co. He later described himself in court as “Jeff Bezos’ shadow” during the early days of Amazon.com.
Laura Overdeck, a Princeton University and Wharton School graduate, likewise worked in the hedge fund world — and, after tying the knot, threw herself into philanthropy.
Together, the couple founded the Overdeck Family Foundation focused on education in 2011. And Laura Overdeck parlayed her interest into her Bedtime Math nonprofit, producing acclaimed children’s books and apps designed to help spark interest in mathematics.
In private, the couple raised three children in a 6,000-square-foot Millburn, New Jersey, mansion.
But the math whizzes’ marriage didn’t add up, court filings contend.
Laura Overdeck filed for divorce in 2022, and alleged that John Overdeck plotted for years to get out of the marriage as close to scot-free as a billionaire without a prenup could.
He started laying the groundwork for a divorce just five years into their marriage, allegedly conspiring with the couple’s lawyers to hide assets, court filings in a related lawsuit contend.
The alleged covert turn toward splitsville coincided with Two Sigma’s growth, with the hedge fund now worth roughly $80 billion.
The central question in the divorce — and the ongoing trial — is whether Laura Overdeck can claim her husband’s stake in Two Sigma as a marital asset.
She contends the firm, founded in 2000, was little more than a paper asset when they wed, while her erstwhile hubby argues it was already well established.
Ultimately, Laura Overdeck is seeking a 35% piece of John’s stake in Two Sigma — which her lawyer pegs at $6.2 billion.
John Overdeck allegedly offered a relative fraction of that eye-watering amount, but it certainly isn’t chump change: $633 million, according to Laura Overdeck’s lawyer Theresa Lyons.
“John Overdeck is trying to put the genie back in the bottle,” Lyons said in court.
The outcome could also impact the direction of Two Sigma, where John Overdeck had a bitter falling out with fellow co-founder David Siegel.
The co-founders each own roughly half the firm and have been battling for control since 2023.
A win by Laura Overdeck not only would net her an all-time divorce payout, but also potentially tip the precarious balance of power at Two Sigma into Siegel’s hands.
Beyond the rancorous conflict over cash, the divorce exposed sordid accusations against both John and Laura Overdeck.
The hubby’s fencing instructor gal pal sued Laura Overdeck for defamation — accusing her of insinuating that she ruined their marriage and calling her a criminal who ‘threatens people with real knives,” court papers reveal.
The accusations dovetail with bizarre 2023 police body-camera footage depicting a woman ranting to cops at the Overdecks’ mansion that John was “just using me.”
John Overdeck admitted to cops he was “dating” the woman, but claimed they never had sex or even got naked in each other’s company, the footage revealed.
As the uncomfortable scene progresses, Laura Overdeck drove up and told cops she wanted both John and the gal pal gone.
“Frankly, it’s not even that complicated. He’s got a psycho girlfriend, and he’s got to get out. It’s not that complicated. Like, I just want her to leave my kids alone,’’ the wife said.
But Laura Overdeck also didn’t escape being sullied amid the divorce.
Accusations that she hacked John Overdeck’s computer, broke into his post office box and deleted evidence from her phone led a judge to bar her from taking the stand in the trial.
That means the trial will hinge on Overdeck’s ongoing testimony, which is set to resume next week.
He argued that his wife’s exposure to Two Sigma mostly involved attending holiday parties and when he handed out copies of her math-focused kids’ book series in the office.
She didn’t manage money, make trades, investment decisions or hires for the firm, he testified Tuesday.
“No, she did not,” he repeatedly responded to questions about Laura Overdeck’s involvement.
The financier also spilled details on their now-bygone home life, recounting how his wife did the majority of parenting with the help of a full-time nanny and 15-hour-a-week housekeeper.
“I think I was a fairly active dad for somebody who was working in the city,” he testified.
”I coached all three of my kids in their sports teams, and I almost never worked on weekends and was typically at home and engaged with the family. But I don’t want to take away from the fact that Laura certainly did more at home than I did.”
