Tragic Loss: Former NFL Linebacker Aldon Smith Passes Away Unexpectedly at 36

The San Francisco 49ers shared the heartbreaking news on Saturday that Aldon Smith, their former linebacker, has passed away at the age of 36. The announcement has sent ripples of sorrow through the football community.

The 49ers expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement, saying, “We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. His undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were evident from the moment he joined our team. Aldon’s rookie season was one of the most impressive the National Football League has witnessed. Beyond his athletic prowess, Aldon will always be remembered for his infectious smile that brightened every room he entered. Our hearts go out to the Smith family and everyone who had the privilege to know and love Aldon.”

The cause of Smith’s untimely death has not been disclosed.

Smith, who was drafted seventh overall out of Missouri by the 49ers in 2011, made an immediate and significant impact on the team. His presence was pivotal in ending San Francisco’s playoff drought, propelling them to three consecutive NFC title games and a Super Bowl appearance in his initial seasons with the team.

During his rookie year, Smith recorded 14 sacks, finishing second to Von Miller for the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. The following year, he set a franchise record with 19.5 sacks and was honored as a first-team All-Pro, cementing his legacy as a formidable force on the field.

His 33 1/2 sacks in his first two seasons are the most in NFL history. He kept that pace up with 4 1/2 sacks in the first three games in 2013 before the off-field issues started with an arrest for DUI and a stint in rehab for substance abuse that sidelined him for five games.

He was also arrested on a weapons charge that season but returned to the field.

Smith had 3 1/2 sacks in the playoffs that season but was suspended for the first nine games in 2014 and never made it back to his early level of performance because of suspensions and injuries.

San Francisco then released him in August 2015 after another drunken driving charge — his fifth arrest in three years. He signed with Oakland just before the start of the 2015 season and had 3 1/2 sacks in nine games before being suspended again.

“Aldon proudly wore the Silver and Black, was respected by his teammates and will be missed dearly,” the Raiders said in a statement.

Smith applied for reinstatement to the NFL in 2016, but was not allowed back initially. The Raiders released him in 2018 following a domestic violence arrest. A plea agreement was reached in that case.

He eventually was reinstated in 2020 and played 16 games for Dallas that season and had five sacks.

He signed with Seattle the next season but was arrested again for battery and was released in training camp. He served a six-month jail sentence for DUI in 2023 and never played again in the NFL.

Smith finished his career with 52 1/2 sacks in 75 games.

In college, he was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and the recipient of Missouri’s Defensive Lineman of the Year Award in 2010.

Unveiling New York’s Dark Side: Shocking NYPD Stats Expose Knicks-Related Chaos

0

The New York Police Department has unveiled a comprehensive report of the chaotic incidents that overshadowed the Knicks’ NBA championship victory on Saturday night. The report highlights several distressing events, including shootings, stabbings, and assaults among fans.

After the Knicks clinched their first NBA title in 53 years with a victory in San Antonio, celebrations erupted in New York City, drawing millions of fans to the streets well into the early hours of Sunday.

While many revelers enjoyed the festivities peacefully, a number of individuals sought out trouble. Alarming videos surfaced showing fans vandalizing school buses, clashing with riot police, and damaging police vehicles near Times Square.

At approximately 2 a.m., panic ensued when a gunshot was heard near 43rd Street and Broadway. The NYPD has since released a detailed account of the night’s troubling events.

The crime report, issued the following morning, confirmed that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot amid the celebrations. Additionally, 63 fans were taken into custody throughout the city.

With an ambulance unable to reach the stricken teenager due to the crowds ‘completely taking over’, he was transported to the hospital by the NYPD and is in a stable condition.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and three persons of interest are in custody.

Of the 63 fans arrested in the chaos, some of the charges were listed as: assault on a police officer, criminal possession of weapon (gun), criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.

Ten NYPD officers were injured, including one of who was punched in the face and another who was struck with a glass bottle, according to authorities.

The police report states that crowds ‘became increasingly destructive’ after the game had finished, with ‘many incidents of incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior’.

In addition to the shooting, there were four stabbings/slashings, and five school buses were lit on fire and destroyed with bats, after fans had jumped on top of them.

The buses, which had been parked near Times Square, were being used to transport soccer fans to and from MetLife Stadium for the World Cup.

Five NYPD cop cars, meanwhile, were badly damaged by fans with bats, with front and back windshields shattered and the windows smashed.

A specific number could not be placed on the ‘multiple’ other personal vehicles damaged in the chaos, while there were also fireworks lit in large crowds.

The report added that large physical fights broke out across the city, while many fans climbed up light poles, traffic lights, structures and scaffolding.

On Sunday morning, city workers began a mass cleanup operation to clear the city of the damage and destruction caused overnight… before Thursday’s title parade threatens to wreak havoc all over again.

The worst of the debris was left in Times Square, where the burnt-out school buses were towed away in the middle of the night.

In one clip, cops can be seen watching on as a tow truck drags away a bus from close to 42nd St, with parts of the vehicle falling off in the process.

Just minutes earlier, a separate clip had shown the driver of a school bus desperately begging fans to stop ripping apart his livelihood. He can be heard shouting, ‘this is coming out of my check’, only to be ignored as they pulled the hood off.

1,800 miles away from where the victory was sealed in San Antonio, Knicks owner James Dolan begged New Yorkers to rein in the bedlam in the Big Apple.

‘We’re going to have a parade on Thursday,’ he declared from his press conference in Texas. ‘But everybody tonight in New York, be safe. Celebrate but be safe.’

NYPD officers in riot gear swiftly moved into action to control the wild masses unleashed on Manhattan’s Midtown.

However, mayhem broke out as police frantically shoved the jubilant supporters back in desperate attempts to clear the area.

An officer was captured repeatedly ordering one man to stand back from the street, screaming, ‘sidewalk,’ in his face.

As the fan refused to back down, instead encroaching closer to the cop and confronting him, the NYPD officer shoved him back.

It sparked violent scenes as a trio of officers pounced on the man, all three tackling him to the ground.

As he hit the tarmac, more cops piled on top of him as they swarmed around the struggle, fending off other furious supporters looking to join the fray. They could then be seen leading the felled fan away in handcuffs.

Earlier in the evening, the city had become a sea of orange and blue as fans teemed into the area near the team’s Manhattan arena to watch on bar TVs and big screens for the historic moment. And, they were rewarded.

Fireworks shot off in New York within mere seconds of the final horn in San Antonio, sparking a celebration decades in the making.

Across the five boroughs, the Big Apple erupted into a cacophony of thunderous cries, car horns and sirens – the soundtrack to a championship.

Away from MSG, other iconic landmarks, including Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park and the heart of Brooklyn, were painted in swathes of orange and blue.

In the game itself, MVP Jalen Brunson spearheaded the comeback, scoring 45 points, including 13 straight for New York in the fourth quarter, to seal the win.

The captain could barely contain his tears as he choked up while emotionally declaring, ‘I have no words,’ during the postgame celebrations.

Brunson, fittingly, closed with a flourish. He set a Knicks record for points in a finals game; it had been 38 by Willis Reed against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of the 1970 series. It now belongs to the left-handed point guard who changed the franchise’s fortunes when he arrived four years ago.

Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart – the other two parts of the ‘Nova Knicks’ trio that also includes Brunson, three players who were NCAA champions at Villanova and teamed up in New York to try to do the same – combined to score 27 points. Bridges had 14, Hart 13.

‘I don’t know what I’m feeling,’ Brunson said. ‘I’m in awe. Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it.’

Tragic Death of Malnourished 10-Year-Old: Father Charged in Heartbreaking Abuse Case

The tragic case of a young boy from Maine has taken a somber turn as his parents and grandmother admitted guilt in connection to his untimely death. The 10-year-old, Braxtyn Smith, was reportedly subjected to severe neglect and abuse, resulting in him weighing only 48 pounds, as authorities revealed he was forced to consume dog food.

Joshua Smith, aged 35, confessed to the murder charge concerning his son Braxtyn’s demise on Thursday. Following suit, Braxtyn’s 63-year-old grandmother, Mistie Latourette, accepted a plea for manslaughter on Friday. Earlier in the year, his mother, 37-year-old Jem Bean, had also pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Braxtyn’s life ended on February 18, 2024, when he was taken to the hospital by his mother and grandmother. Upon arrival, his body showed numerous bruises, and a subsequent autopsy declared his death was a homicide, as he had been subject to physical abuse.

Court documents, accessed by local CBS affiliate WGME and ABC affiliate WMTW, disclosed that Braxtyn endured two years of maltreatment at his Bangor residence. At his death, he weighed a mere 48 pounds, significantly below the expected weight range for his age. The boy was found vomiting, with the emesis reportedly resembling and smelling like pet food.

Investigations by detectives revealed that Braxtyn’s parents routinely deprived him of food as a form of punishment, forcing him to resort to eating dog food.

Bean tried to blame the injuries on her son, saying he would throw himself to the ground during “temper tantrums.” But text messages reportedly said that not only did Smith beat Braxtyn, he seemed to take joy in doing so.

“Little one is super tired and I’m going to slap him already so it should be fun,” he said to Latourette in one text message.

Smith also texted with Bean about tying down their son.

“There some reason you couldn’t be bothered to zip tie everything your supposed to huh?” Smith reportedly wrote.

Bean responded: “What did I miss? I did his ankles to the tote and his hands together behind his back.”

About two years before Braxtyn’s death, his father was angry his son wasn’t completing his schoolwork.

“I’m going to kill him,” Smith texted Bean, per local NBC affiliate WCSH.

Smith claimed the text messages were “sarcasm and stuff like that.”

State officials said the abuse was not detected because the boy was homeschooled.

Prosecutors are recommending Bean serve 25 years in prison while her attorneys are asking for five to 10 years behind bars, WCSH reported. Her sentencing date has yet to be set.

Smith will be sentenced in September. It’s unclear how long a sentence he faces.

Top 5 Essential Daily Exercises to Maintain Strength and Vitality After 60

0

To rebuild full-body strength after the age of 60, focus on five essential movements: squats, pushes, pulls, bracing, and hinging.

Maintaining strength past 60 doesn’t require an elaborate workout regimen. The key lies in preserving fundamental movement patterns like squatting, pushing, pulling, and engaging your core and hips. Mastering these movements can make everyday activities simpler, such as standing up from a chair, carrying groceries, getting off the floor, climbing stairs, and maintaining good posture, all of which depend on functional strength.

The best daily exercises are those that are easy to repeat. There’s no need to exhaust yourself every morning or treat each set as a grueling challenge. A handful of targeted exercises can help you preserve muscle mass, support joint health, enhance balance, and make you feel more agile throughout the day. The trick is to select movements that offer maximum benefits with minimal preparation.

I favor this workout approach because it covers the essentials without turning fitness into a chore. Bodyweight squats effectively work your legs, while push-ups maintain upper body strength. Side planks are excellent for building core stability, which is crucial for balance. Glute bridges activate the hips and glutes, and standing band rows strengthen the upper back, which becomes increasingly important as posture tends to decline with age.

I like this routine style because it checks the big boxes without making fitness feel like a production. Bodyweight squats train your legs. Push-ups keep your upper body strong. Side planks build the core strength that helps you stay steady. Glute bridges wake up the hips and backside. Standing band rows strengthen the upper back, which matters more than most people realize once posture starts getting lazy.

Use these five exercises as a daily strength reset. Keep the reps clean, stop before your form gets sloppy, and adjust the variations to match your current ability. Done consistently, this simple routine can help you stay stronger, steadier, and more confident in the movements you use every day.

Bodyweight Squats

Bodyweight squats train your quads, glutes, hamstrings, hips, and core while reinforcing one of the most important movement patterns after 60. Every time you sit down, stand up, climb stairs, or get out of a low chair, your body uses some version of a squat. Training the movement daily helps your legs stay strong and keeps your hips and knees moving through a range you can control. Move slowly, own your depth, and make each rep feel smooth instead of rushed.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips back and bend your knees.
  4. Lower until you reach a comfortable depth.
  5. Drive through your feet to stand tall.
  6. Squeeze your glutes at the top.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Chair squats, box squats, pause squats.

Form Tip: Keep your knees tracking with your toes and press through your whole foot.

Push-Ups

Push-ups train your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core while teaching your body to stay strong from head to heels. The movement helps with more than upper-body strength. It supports getting up from the floor, bracing with your hands, pushing doors open, and keeping your arms useful during daily tasks. Use an incline, wall, or countertop if floor push-ups feel too aggressive. The best version is the one you can do well and repeat consistently.

Muscles Trained: Chest, shoulders, triceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Place your hands on the floor, a wall, a bench, or a sturdy, elevated surface.
  2. Step your feet back until your body forms a straight line.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Lower your chest toward your hands with control.
  5. Press through your hands to return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat without letting your hips sag.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 12 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Wall push-ups, incline push-ups, knee push-ups.

Form Tip: Keep your elbows angled slightly back instead of flaring them straight out.

Side Planks

Side planks train your obliques, deep core, shoulders, and hips. Those muscles help keep your body steady when you walk, turn, carry something on one side, or shift your weight. A strong side plank also supports posture and balance, two qualities that become more important with age. Start with the bent-knee version if needed, then build toward longer holds as your core gets stronger.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, deep core, shoulders, outer hips.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your side with your forearm under your shoulder.
  2. Stack your feet or stagger them for more support.
  3. Brace your core and lift your hips off the floor.
  4. Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
  5. Hold the position while breathing steadily.
  6. Lower with control and switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 15 to 30 seconds per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bent-knee side planks, staggered-feet side planks, side plank with top-leg lift.

Form Tip: Press your forearm into the floor and keep your hips lifted.

Glute Bridges

Glute bridges train your glutes and hamstrings while your core helps keep your hips and pelvis steady. Strong glutes make walking, climbing stairs, standing up, and lower back support feel better. This exercise also helps counter long stretches of sitting by getting the backside of your body working again. Pause at the top of each rep and squeeze with intent, because the finish is where the glutes really come into play.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place your arms at your sides.
  3. Brace your core and press through your heels.
  4. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
  5. Squeeze your glutes at the top.
  6. Lower your hips with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Paused glute bridges, mini-band glute bridges, single-leg glute bridges.

Form Tip: Drive through your heels and avoid arching your lower back.

Standing Band Row

Standing band rows train your upper back, lats, rear shoulders, biceps, and core. Pulling strength matters after 60 because it supports posture, shoulder health, grip, and daily tasks like carrying bags or pulling objects toward you. The band provides resistance without a machine, and standing engages your core to help maintain your posture. Focus on pulling your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades, rather than yanking with your hands.

Muscles Trained: Upper back, lats, rear delts, biceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at chest height.
  2. Stand tall and hold one end of the band in each hand.
  3. Step back until the band has light tension.
  4. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  5. Pull your elbows back toward your ribs.
  6. Return your hands forward with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm band rows, paused band rows, seated band rows.

Form Tip: Keep your shoulders down and pull through your elbows.

How to Make Daily Strength Work Stick

Daily strength work doesn’t need to be long to be effective. The goal is to keep your body practicing the movements that help you stay capable: squat, push, pull, brace, and extend through the hips. Some days you might do one round. Other days, you might run through three. Either way, the routine works best when the effort stays clean and consistent.

  • Keep the routine short enough to repeat: Ten minutes of focused work can help you build momentum. A routine you can do often will beat a perfect plan that rarely happens.
  • Use the right variation: Wall push-ups, chair squats, and bent-knee side planks all count. Choose the version that lets you move well.
  • Focus on control: Slow reps help your muscles stay engaged and keep your joints in better positions. Rushing usually steals the benefit.
  • Train both strength and posture: Push-ups and rows balance each other nicely. Squats and bridges keep your lower body strong from the front and back.
  • Progress gradually: Add reps, longer holds, a stronger band, or an extra set when the routine feels too easy. Small changes keep your body adapting.

Strong after 60 doesn’t have to mean complicated. Hit these five moves with steady effort, and you’ll cover the strength basics your body needs most.

Jalen Brunson Steps Up in Support of Knicks Analyst Following Unintended Remarks About Taylor Swift

0

Jalen Brunson is steering clear of any animosity.

The New York Knicks star and NBA champion stepped up to defend sports analyst Monica McNutt after she inadvertently criticized Taylor Swift during a hot mic incident.

During McNutt’s interview with the NBA Finals 2026 MVP following his team’s remarkable victory in San Antonio on Saturday, Brunson took the microphone to address the Swiftie community, which had been targeting the ESPN analyst online.

“I just want to say something to the Swifties. She’s truly one of the good ones,” the 29-year-old athlete remarked about McNutt, 36, as captured in a video circulating online.

“Give her a break. Everything’s fine, I assure you,” Brunson concluded.

McNutt replied, “Thank you. I appreciate it.”

Page Six has reached out to McNutt’s rep for comment but did not immediately hear back.

During Game 4 of the NBA Finals last Wednesday, McNutt was caught making a shady comment about Swift, who sat courtside in Madison Square Garden with her pals Alana and Este Haim.

“Is that Taylor Swift down there?” McNutt asked in the viral clip.

When fellow announcer Tyler Murray replied that he didn’t think Swift was there, McNutt pointed out the “Bad Blood” singer by describing her “long ponytail” and “blue” outfit.

Murray then whipped his phone out to take a picture of the pop star for his wife.

“She’s not a Knicks fan,” McNutt said. “Get out of here, girl.”

The following day, McNutt told TMZ that though she “misspoke” about Swift’s Knicks fandom, the Grammy winner hasn’t been to a home game for the team all season.

“I literally just did a piece on celebrity row. I know these folks: Ben Stiller, his wife Christine, Spike Lee. I had not seen her here, this year or last year,” she told the outlet.

“We just saw her in Cleveland with her fiancé. Obviously, Travis [Kelce] supports the Cavs. She didn’t have on any Knicks paraphernalia,” McNutt continued. “So, I did not know of her Knicks loyalty. But shoutout to T-Swift. We can be united in orange and blue.”

McNutt said she “was wrong” for her remarks and that “nobody cared” about her comments because the Knicks came back from being down 29 points to win that game.

Romeo Beckham Highlights Sister Harper as His ‘Favorite Person,’ Hinting at Tensions with Brooklyn

0

Romeo Beckham has publicly criticized his brother Brooklyn for suggesting that their family’s visit to his Los Angeles home with their sister Harper was staged.

Harper, who is 14, was photographed looking disappointed as she approached Brooklyn’s Beverly Hills residence alone, only to leave shortly thereafter.

Following this incident, Brooklyn’s inner circle accused the Beckhams of manipulating Harper’s visit to their advantage, labeling her as a “pawn” in family dynamics.

Supporters of David and Victoria Beckham have strongly refuted these claims, denouncing them as unfair allegations against the young and innocent Harper from their estranged son, Brooklyn, who is 27.

In a show of solidarity, 23-year-old Romeo took to Instagram, calling Harper his “favorite person ever” and sharing a heartfelt selfie with his younger sister.

He flashed a smile while wearing a Brazil jacket from his own label Intra, cuddled up next to his beloved sibling who was pulling a playful expression.

Romeo Beckham has taken a swipe at his brother Brooklyn after he accused the family of ‘choreographing’ their sister Harper’s visit to his Los Angeles mansion

The family spat emerged after Harper was photographed arriving at his £14million Los Angeles home on Friday afternoon, reportedly carrying a handwritten letter for her older brother.

However, representatives for Brooklyn and Nicola insisted the circumstances surrounding the visit raised serious questions.

They told the Daily Mail: ‘[The fact] that photographers were in place as the letter was hand delivered says it all – this was choreographed for the cameras.’

In response friends close to Victoria and David have said: ‘It is incredibly sad that this horrible accusation is being levelled at an innocent young girl who just desperately misses her brother.

‘Nothing needed to be said at all so to invent this nasty accusation is really unnecessary.’

They have also claimed that Brooklyn hasn’t accepted any contact from Harper or his grandparents since the falling out.

It later emerged that Brooklyn, 27, was not even in California at the time.

Instead the aspiring chef and media personality shared an Instagram story showing himself out for a run in New York City, making it clear that he was on the opposite side of the country when his younger sister arrived at his front door.

David’s new plaque has taken pride of place at the centre of Hollywood Boulevard, just over five miles from Brooklyn’s home.

The former England captain appeared determined to avoid discussing the family fallout during interviews ahead of the ceremony.

Asked what toll months of headlines surrounding the feud had taken on him, he replied: ‘To be honest, I’m sorry to stop you there, but that’s a private matter. That’s the one thing that I don’t want to talk about.’

The Beckhams have been embroiled in an increasingly acrimonious dispute with Brooklyn and Nicola for months, with relations said to have deteriorated dramatically after the couple failed to attend David’s 50th birthday celebrations in May 2025.

In January, Brooklyn released a scathing six-page statement denouncing his parents.

He announced he had cut ties with his family – declaring he was no longer part of ‘Brand Beckham’ and insisting his parents and their other children are ‘performative’.

Shortly before Christmas last year, Brooklyn blocked his parents on Instagram, while Brooklyn and Nicola’s lawyers later wrote to the Beckhams’ legal team requesting that all communication be conducted through legal representatives.

Brooklyn also claimed David and Victoria had controlled him for much of his life, attempted to drive a wedge between him and Nicola and left him embarrassed when his mother danced ‘inappropriately’ with him during the first dance at his wedding.

Victoria has previously spoken about the challenges of parenting older children while under intense scrutiny.

Speaking about all four of her children, she said: ‘Being a parent of young adult children and adult children, gosh, I mean, it’s very different from having little children.

‘I think that we’re trying to do the best we can,’ she said, adding that the negative press in recent months had not affected her fashion and beauty empire.

New Study Reveals Glucosamine Supplements Could Accelerate Memory Decline in Alzheimer’s Patients

0

Recent research published in Nature Metabolism reveals a concerning link between the supplement glucosamine and increased mortality in those with Alzheimer’s disease. The study, conducted by my team and me, shows that individuals with Alzheimer’s who consumed glucosamine had a 25% higher chance of dying within five years compared to non-users.

Glucosamine, commonly marketed as an over-the-counter treatment for joint pain and arthritis, boasts a user base of over 40 million Americans annually. Despite its popularity, these findings suggest potential risks for certain individuals.

Moreover, our study indicates that glucosamine may also negatively impact individuals with mild cognitive impairment, an early stage of dementia. Those in this group who took the supplement were 25% more likely to advance to full-blown Alzheimer’s disease.

Our research relied on anonymized medical data from the University of Florida Health system. We scrutinized records of 24,000 dementia patients and 41,000 individuals with mild cognitive impairment, comparing outcomes between those who used glucosamine and those who did not.

To delve deeper into these effects, we experimented with mice genetically modified to exhibit Alzheimer’s-like symptoms. Our findings revealed that inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing sugars like glucosamine alleviated dementia symptoms in these mice. Conversely, administering glucosamine exacerbated memory loss, while healthy mice showed no significant response to the supplement.

Why it matters

The Food and Drug Administration classifies glucosamine as a dietary supplement, not a prescription drug. As a result, anyone can buy it over the counter without seeing a doctor.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar. Composed of glucose and an amino acid called glutamine, these molecules are used by the body to build new cells. Because glucosamine is not considered an essential nutrient, glucosamine deficiency is not a recognized condition. However, people take the supplement based on anecdotal reports that it improves joint health, especially in the knees.

For more than a decade, my team and I at the University of Florida have studied how the brain uses and processes sugar and what goes wrong with that chemistry in people who have Alzheimer’s disease.

A lesser-known problem associated with Alzheimer’s disease is that brain cells and proteins build up extra sugar coatings. Brain cells and proteins normally carry short chains of sugar on their surface called N-glycans. These sugars guide a newly made protein into its three-dimensional shape and help it attach to other proteins it works with.

But in people with Alzheimer’s disease, the chains pile up where they don’t belong. The proteins underneath them start to fail, leading to memory loss and cell death. This condition is called hyperglycosylation.

Given that about 7.2 million Americans ages 65 and older live with Alzheimer’s disease, we estimated that many were also taking glucosamine for joint health. We hypothesized that this sugar amine may be contributing to cognitive decline.

Earlier studies have linked glucosamine supplements to a lower dementia risk in cognitively healthy adults. Our findings do not contradict those reports but qualify them. While glucosamine appears safe and potentially protective for a healthy brain, it may be harmful for a brain that is already experiencing cognitive decline.

What still isn’t known

Since our study was based on patient records rather than a controlled experiment in people, it cannot show that glucosamine causes faster cognitive decline – only that there’s an association.

Answering this question would require a study that randomly administers glucosamine to some patients and not to others. But if glucosamine may increase the risk of dementia, giving patients glucosamine would be unethical.

In addition, we do not yet know whether the apparent harm glucosamine has on the brains of people with memory problems depends on the dose, the brand of the supplement, or on how long people take it. We also do not know whether this finding applies to other forms of dementia.

What’s next

One way to test whether glucosamine directly causes cognitive decline would be a clinical trial on patients who took glucosamine and then discontinued it. About 8% of dementia patients in our database fall into that category. We hope to follow them for several years to see whether stopping the supplement slows their cognitive decline.

We are also screening compounds that block the N-glycan molecule and reduces the buildup of sugars on brain cells to see whether this might slow or reverse Alzheimer’s disease.

Finally, we plan to explore whether other supplements that the body breaks down in similar ways to glucosamine carry comparable risks for brains experiencing cognitive decline.

Germany Vows to Forge Europe’s Most Powerful Army in Response to NATO and Trump Challenges

This article is part six in a series exploring the challenges facing the NATO alliance.

Germany is committing to bolster its military strength within NATO. Berlin’s ambassador to Washington has revealed to News Media that the nation is prepared to take on a more significant role in ensuring European security, particularly after years during which the United States has shouldered much of the alliance’s military commitments.

In an exclusive discussion with News Media, German Ambassador to the United States Jens Hanefeld declared, “Germany is stepping up — we heard the call!”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed his ambition for the country’s armed forces to become Europe’s most formidable conventional military. Ambassador Hanefeld confirmed that Berlin’s latest military strategy aligns with this objective.

Germany’s pledge to enhance its military capabilities within NATO is a sign of its readiness to assume a larger responsibility in the realm of European security, as highlighted by Berlin’s ambassador to Washington in a statement to News Media.

“Russia’s illegal war of aggression has shaken old certainties in Europe and Germany as the international rules we have relied on are being challenged,” Hanefeld said. “This changes the strategic environment we operate in.”

“Today, Germany is Ukraine’s largest supporter,” Hanefeld said in written answers. “Germany’s decision to become Europe’s strongest conventional army, well anchored in the NATO alliance, is an ongoing commitment.”

The shift marks a historic turn for a country whose postwar military identity was built around restraint.

After World War II, West Germany was allowed to rearm only within a Western alliance framework, joining NATO in 1955 and building the Bundeswehr as a force embedded in collective defense rather than independent German power. For decades after reunification, Germany relied heavily on the U.S. security umbrella and often lagged behind NATO spending targets, feeding repeated American complaints that Europe’s largest economy was not pulling its weight.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 forced Berlin to begin rethinking that posture. Then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the shift a “Zeitenwende,” or turning point. Merz is now seeking to turn that phrase into a long-term military buildup.

In Germany, Hanefeld said, the changes underway are often described as a “Zeitenwende,” but he acknowledged that the transformation does not come easily given the country’s history.

The effort is unfolding against a backdrop of public friction between President Donald Trump and Merz, a dispute that a U.S. defense expert warned could complicate critical decisions on deterring Russia.

The tension escalated after Merz criticized Washington’s handling of the Iran war, saying the United States was being “humiliated” by Iran’s leadership in negotiations and questioning the Trump administration’s exit strategy. Trump fired back by accusing Merz of being soft on Iran’s nuclear program, even though Merz has said Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon.

The dispute quickly spilled into NATO politics. Trump later threatened to review possible U.S. troop reductions in Germany and said Merz should spend more time ending the war in Ukraine and “fixing his broken country” than commenting on Iran.

Then Merz added another irritant. Speaking to a young audience in Germany, he said he would not advise his children to live, study or work in the United States “today,” citing America’s changing social climate, while also saying he remained “a great admirer of America,” but “My admiration isn’t growing at the moment.”

Retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former U.S. European Command official, told News Media that Merz was wrong to speak that way about Trump at a moment when Germany needs Washington’s support.

“Talking trash about the president at a meeting with school kids in Germany is not professional diplomacy, and especially a president who is well-known to be prickly as President Trump,” Montgomery said. “Germany is not the big country in this relationship, the United States is, and Merz needed to show more discipline as a national leader.”

Montgomery said those tensions risk affecting hard security decisions, including long-range strike capabilities in Germany.

He criticized recent U.S. moves to delay or potentially cancel a rotational deployment of long-range strike systems to Germany, which he said would have included Tomahawk, SM-6 or Precision Strike Missile capabilities. Reuters reported in May that Germany’s defense ministry said there had been no “definitive cancellation” of the deployment.

“Both of these are bad decisions being made by our Department of Defense,” Montgomery said. “These are weapons systems that are incredibly important to deterring Russia.”

He said the goal is not to fight Russia in Poland, the Baltics or the Suwałki Gap, but to prevent Moscow from attacking in the first place.

“And those long-range strike weapons are a big part of that. And I’m very disappointed in our Department of Defense,” Montgomery said.

A source with knowledge of the matter said that despite briefings about possible decreases in U.S. involvement, the U.S.–Germany defense relationship remains strong and cooperation remains close.

“Germany developing a large, impressive defense industrial base is good for NATO, it’s good for Western security, and it’s even good for our primes,” Montgomery said, arguing that Germany, not Poland, France or the United Kingdom, is most likely to become the “beating heart” of Europe’s future defense industrial base.

Germany has long been central to the U.S. military presence in Europe. Hanefeld pointed to Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the training area in Grafenwöhr as examples of Germany’s continuing importance to American power projection and NATO deterrence.

“These facilities serve U.S. national security interests and U.S. military personnel and further NATO’s ability to deter and defend,” he said. “I am confident: NATO will remain transatlantic at its core, but will become more European over the next decade.”

At the 2025 NATO summit in The Hague, allies agreed to invest 5% of GDP annually in defense and defense-related spending by 2035, including core military spending and broader security investments. Merz said at the time that the decision was meant to safeguard “freedom, security and prosperity,” according to the German government.

Hanefeld said Germany is already moving to meet that standard, saying Berlin will increase defense spending to 5% of GDP “well before” 2035 and recruit almost 100,000 new active-duty soldiers into the Bundeswehr.

He also pushed back against U.S. critics who argue that Germany and other European allies are still not carrying their fair share of the defense burden. Hanefeld said Germany has signed more than 380 contracts worth more than $33 billion with U.S. defense companies to procure and manufacture fighter jets, transport helicopters, air defense systems and ammunition.

“It’s a down payment on the transatlantic future and on our political commitment to shift the burden for deterrence and defense to Europe,” Hanefeld said.

One of Germany’s most visible commitments is its permanent brigade in Lithuania, expected to include around 5,000 German military and civilian personnel. The Bundeswehr says the force is intended to become fully operational for the defense of NATO’s eastern flank in the Baltic region within three years.

Hanefeld called the brigade one of Germany’s “signature efforts” to reassure Baltic allies that NATO “will defend every inch of allied territory.”

For Germany, the change is not only about money. It is a political and cultural break with decades of caution about military power. For the United States, it is also a test of whether the ally long criticized by Trump and other U.S. leaders for underspending can now become the European backbone Washington has demanded.

Hanefeld said that is exactly where Berlin intends to go.

“NATO will remain transatlantic at its core,” he said, “but will become more European over the next decade.”

Kate Faces Anti-Monarchist Protests During Trooping the Colour Ceremony

0

The Princess of Wales faced a challenging moment during the Trooping the Colour event as anti-monarchists booed her and her children in a public protest.

During the traditional annual ceremony, Princess Catherine maintained her composure despite the jeers directed at her and her children, George, Louis, and Charlotte, as they traveled by carriage.

The demonstration was organized by the anti-monarchy group Republic, who unfurled umbrellas that spelled out “Stop The Reign” as part of their protest.

As the royal procession made its way through central London to Buckingham Palace, chants of “Not my King” and “Not my Queen” could be heard, aimed at Catherine and her family. The event coincided with the celebration of King Charles’s official birthday, even though his actual birthday is on November 14, 1948.

Despite the vocal opposition, the Princess of Wales appeared unfazed by the remarks as she joined other members of the Royal Family on the Buckingham Palace balcony. Meanwhile, many in the crowd applauded in support of the royal festivities.

Charles’s official birthday was celebrated with a display of military pomp and pageantry on Horse Guards Parade in front of thousands of spectators.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ youngest child Louis was spotted ducking down to look through a half-open window to catch a glimpse of Trooping the Colour, and later leaning sideways to get a better view of a celebratory fly-past.

The eight-year-old prince was watching events from the first-floor window of the Duke of Wellington’s former office with siblings Prince George, 12, and 11-year-old Princess Charlotte.

Others there included the Duchess of Edinburgh and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

Below in the parade ground on a royal dais were the King, Queen and Kate, who wore a striking wide-brimmed blue and white Philip Treacy hat and matching Catherine Walker outfit.

The royal women paid tribute to their regiments, with Kate sporting the brooch of the Irish Guards, of which she serves as Colonel.

Camilla is Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and wore a red Fiona Clare dress based on their uniform and a black beret with white plume by Treacy, featuring her regimental cap badge.

Trooping the Colour is a historic ceremony where colours, or regimental flags, used as rallying points in battle were ‘trooped’ or paraded in front of soldiers so they would be recognised.

The ceremony evolved into a celebration of the head of state’s official birthday and this year the colour trooped was the King’s Colour of the Grenadier Guards, presented by Charles earlier this week during a Buckingham Palace ceremony.

Stands around Horse Guards Parade were filled with about 8,000 family members of the guards and officers.

Charles inspected the troops from a carriage, passing the ranks of about 1,000 guardsmen from the Grenadier, Scots, Irish and Coldstream Guards regiments and later stood to salute as the colours were marched past him.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Duke of Kent were also gathered on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the traditional fly-past of RAF aircraft.

The aerial display roared over the palace in 10 waves and featured Typhoon jets, Chinook helicopters, C-17 large military transport planes and the Red Arrows trailing their trademark red, white and blue smoke and joined by four F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing jets.

Crowds had gathered in The Mall to see the Royal Family but the area directly in front of Buckingham Palace was kept free of spectators.

The King wore his military uniform, with Queen Camilla wearing a red silk crepe Grenadier Guards uniform dress, designed by Fiona Clare, as the two travelled from Buckingham Palace to the parade grounds.

It was a family affair for the Firm as the Prince of Wales rode on horseback while wearing the Full Ceremonial Order of the Welsh Guards.

He was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal as they flashed a salute on their way to Buckingham Palace.

Highlighting the strong bond between Kate and her children, they were all dressed in complementary outfits – from George and Louis’s ties that were the exact shade of Kate’s dress to Charlotte’s printed cream dress with hints of blue.

The King was protected by the Sovereign’s Escort, made up of horseback soldiers from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

For the first time this year, the route was lined by armed forces members from all three branches.

As with the soldiers in the procession, all are trained and operational members of the British military.

The King celebrates his real birthday in November, but marks an official one with the Trooping the Colour event in June for ceremonial reasons.

Historic Victory: Knicks Break 53-Year Championship Drought, Sparks Jubilant NYC Celebrations

0

In an electrifying showdown on Saturday night, the New York Knicks pulled off yet another unexpected comeback against the San Antonio Spurs, sending New York City into a frenzy reminiscent of their glory days in 1973.

This victory highlights the Knicks’ 53-year championship drought, a period marked by one of the longest waits in professional sports history. For a franchise that has experienced far more setbacks than triumphs over the past half-century, this win feels like a significant milestone.

As soon as the final buzzer sounded, fans wasted no time in celebrating. The streets around Madison Square Garden erupted in joy, as did numerous watch parties scattered throughout the city. The jubilant atmosphere was a testament to the enduring passion and loyalty of Knicks fans.

The scenes of exuberance and celebration were widespread, taking over the Big Apple with an infectious energy. While most of the revelry was in good spirit, not all of it was entirely innocent.

Okay, so maybe not all of it is so innocent.

Some rioting kicked off before the game was even over.

“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through near misses, heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart — just like the five boroughs itself,” said Mayor Mamdani. “New Yorkers have cheered for our team from packed living rooms in the Bronx to watch parties in Brooklyn, from bars in Queens to Staten Island to Manhattan, and Madison Square Garden itself. Now it’s time for our city to celebrate together. Bing bong.”

Of all of New York’s major professional sports teams – the Giants, Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Jets, and Islanders – only the Jets have had a longer championship drought than the Knicks.

With a championship in tow, the Knicks will make their way back from San Antonio to what promises to be a hero’s welcome the likes of which New York City has not seen in some time.
