To the members of Solid Rock Church located in South Carolina, John Paul Miller and his wife, Mica Miller, seemed like the ideal couple.
They were deeply devoted to their faith, actively participating in ministry work and constantly involved in the Myrtle Beach community that they cherished as their spiritual home.
However, according to Mica’s friends and family, there was a troubling reality behind the couple’s public facade. The newly released Netflix docuseries Death of The Pastor’s Wife reveals allegations of abuse and control within the marriage, claims that John Paul has steadfastly denied.
The story took a tragic turn on April 27, 2024, when Mica was discovered dead in a North Carolina state park.
While authorities have consistently attributed her death to suicide, lingering questions about the circumstances of Mica’s life in those final months remain. What exactly led her to the park on that fateful day is still shrouded in mystery.
“We’re still in the stage of fighting,” her sister Sierra Francis remarked. “We are still fighting for Mica. We are still fighting for answers.”
Oxygen reached out John Paul’s attorney about the allegations raised in the docuseries, but did not receive an immediate reply.
Here’s everything to know about the tragic case and the circumstances behind Mica’s death:
Who Was Mica Miller?
As one of seven siblings, Mica grew up in Wichita, Kansas in a home focused on religion.
“Mica, out of I think all of us, was the most strong in her faith,” her sister Destinee Barrientos remembered in the docuseries. “Mica knew her purpose. Mica knew her calling.”
That calling only got stronger after the family moved to Myrtle Beach and Mica, then 13, began attending Solid Rock Church with her family. They were quickly introduced to the church’s charismatic pastor John Paul Miller, who was married with children of his own.
The family joined the choir where Mica—known for her beautiful voice—became a stand out.
“She loved singing,” her brother Nate Francis said. “She was just extremely talented.”
Mica turned to the church and scripture for solace when her mom and stepfather got divorced, becoming the worship leader in charge of the choir at just 16.
“After the divorce, Mica made church her lifestyle,” her sister Anna Francis explained. “She just kind of took it to like a whole new level.”
Mica Miller and John Paul Miller’s Relationship Began With Scandalous Affair
It was there she met Jeremy, another teen church member, and the two fell in love. They got engaged when Mica was 18 and married on Sept. 29, 2012 with John Paul officiating, according to the docuseries.
After the wedding, she began working at the church as John Paul’s assistant.
“Mica was so heavily influenced by John Paul,” her sister Sierra Francis explained in Death of the Pastor’s Wife. “Because, he was 15 years older than her. He was her pastor. He was her mentor. He was her church leader.”
Three years into her marriage, Sierra said John Paul began texting Mica and complimenting her looks, until their relationship ultimately turned physical. The affair—which was also recounted in an affidavit by John Paul’s first wife Alison Williams—rocked the small church community and ended both John Paul and Mica’s marriages. John Paul begged his followers for forgiveness, giving emotional sermons and writing a letter to parishioners, according to the docuseries.
“All hell broke loose at the church,” Nate recalled. “John Paul kept on reaching out to me. He would apologize. My ears were almost popping I was getting so mad.”
In time, however, the congregation forgave the indiscretion and embraced the new couple.
Friends and Family Describe Red Flags in Mica Miller and John Paul Miller’s Relationship
But by then, friends and family had also noticed some troubling signs in the relationship.
Mica had John Paul’s signature tattooed on her body and there were frequent rumors of John Paul’s infidelity. Her family also believed John Paul encouraged Mica to get breast implants.
“I think he made my sister feel like she wasn’t beautiful enough,” Nate shared in the docuseries. “And so, she had to get this operation done to be the perfect woman in his eyes.”
John Paul denied the claims in an affidavit filed in the Horry County Probate Court, obtained by FITSNews, insisting Mica elected to have the procedure,
According to her family, after the surgery, she had a reaction to the sedatives and began to spiral.
John Paul described it to her family, according to the docuseries, as psychotic episodes and had her committed to a mental institution.
“It was out of our hands,” her sister Anna said. “We could not do a single thing.”
Medical records obtained by Netflix described Mica as making “delusional and hyper religious statements.”
Though her family said she had no prior mental health issues, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and John Paul became responsible for her care. A toxicology report from the North Carolina medical examiner’s office would also later list bipolar disorder among her diagonses, per The Sun News.
Six days after being released from the hospital, John Paul and Mica got married in December 2017.
“We had to pretend that everything was happy, normal,” her sister-in-law Victoria Francis said. “That nothing was wrong. They were just in love and they wanted to get married.”
Mica Miller’s Friends, Family Allege Marriage Was Abusive
Mica’s friends and family said the problems only amplified as the marriage went on—claims that John Paul vehemently denied to ABC 11.
“Never once in any way shape or form. Not any type of abuse. Not physical. No type of abuse ever. I took better care of her than any man could have possibly taken care of her in every way,” he said. “She never had to cook a single meal, she never had to clean not one time, she never had to work, all she had to do was take her medicine and enjoy her life.”
Meanwhile, Mica’s family described John Paul having a voracious appetite for sex, demanding sex daily to keep his eye from wandering.
“Ladies, wives, if you don’t meet your husband’s sexual needs,” he preached in one sermon replayed in the docuseries, “Satan will put 20 different options before his eyes before the days over with.”
To keep up with his demand, friends alleged in the docuseries that John Paul began giving Mica testosterone, even though it damaged her voice.
During one fight between the couple, after Mica allegedly sought refuge at her sister’s house, he texted “I’m coming to u. Ur a horrible wife to do this,” then threatened, “When I arrive I’m going to raise HELL,” according to text messages shared in the docuseries.
“I’m armed,” he allegedly wrote in another message to her sister. “I’m ready.”
Though they called police, John Paul never came to the house and Mica opted not to press charges, instead choosing to reunite with her husband.
“I hurt for John Paul because I know he deserves more,” Mica wrote in her journal at one point, according to the Netflix series. “He deserves an on-fire, enthusiastic wife who loves him and God and is talented and always is his biggest cheerleader. I want to be that so bad.”
Mica’s biblical counselor Laura Hucks also described seeing signs “she was not free to be herself.”
Rumors also began to circulate that John Paul was having an affair with a recently widowed parishioner.
Despite the family’s allegations, John Paul described himself to The Sun News as “the best husband.”
“The one thing I have great peace about between me, God and my wife is that I was the best husband I could possibly be,” he told the outlet in 2024, “and if I would’ve done it over again I don’t think I could have done it any better.”
He has accused her family, according to The Sun News, of convincing her not to take her medication, causing her mental health to spiral—claims they have denied.
John Paul Miller Accused of Cyberstalking Mica Miller After She Left Relationship
Eventually, Mica reached her breaking point and decided to leave the relationship, but friends, family and federal prosecutors said that John Paul wasn’t so willing to let his wife go.
From Nov. 2022 until her death in April 2024, federal prosecutors said John Paul sent his wife “unwanted and harassing communications”—allegations he is currently fighting in court.
“The harassing behavior included [John Paul] Miller posting a nude photo of the victim online without her consent, causing tracking devices to be placed on her vehicle, and in one instance, contacting her over 50 times in a single day,” federal prosecutors noted in a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of South Carolina. “The indictment also alleges he interfered with her finances and her daily activities and on one occasion damaged her vehicle tires.”
Mica’s sister Sierra alleged in an affidavit filed in court and obtained by The Sun News, that Mica believed she was being followed before her death and feared for her life, allegedly telling Sierra “if I end up with a bullet in my head, it was not by me, it was JP [John Paul].”
What Happened to Mica Miller?
Two days after John Paul was served divorce papers on April 25, 2024, Mica’s life came to a tragic end in what the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office would later conclude was a suicide.
According to the timeline laid out by authorities, after leaving her Myrtle Beach apartment at 11:38 a.m., Mica drove to Dick’s Pawn Shop, where she was seen in surveillance footage purchasing a handgun. At 1:27 p.m., she was spotted in surveillance footage arriving at a Conway convenience store were she purchased a drink and gas.
She then drove to North Carolina’s Lumber River State Park, where she placed a 911 call at 2:54 p.m.
“The caller asked the dispatcher if her phone could be located because she was going to kill herself and wanted her family to be able to find her body,” the sheriff’s office said. “During the conversation with the dispatcher, the caller hung up the phone and the dispatcher was unable to contact the caller.”
Her body was later found in the water after a fisherman reported hearing someone crying and then a gunshot, authorities said. The gun was found nearby.
According to the sheriff’s office, a search of her phone revealed she had searched for “national parks near me” before her death.
The next day, John Paul shared the news with his congregation.
“My wife has passed away. Yeah, and it was it was self-induced, and it was up in North Carolina, and we’re gonna have a funeral for her next Sunday,” he said in a recording of the service replayed in the docuseries. “Y’all knew that she wasn’t well mentally, and that she needed medicine that was hard to get to her, and so I’m sure there’ll be more details to come.”
Mica Miller’s Family Raises Concerns About Her Death
After her death, her family has raised concerns about the details of her final moments, suggesting that she may have met with foul play. The sheriff’s office has always contended the death was a suicide.
“I feel like Mica was lured to where she was found,” Victoria explained in the docuseries. “I just have a gut instinct that she did not do this to herself.”
John Paul has repeatedly denied playing any role in her death.
“Following the untimely death of Mica Miller, unfounded rumors and false accusations began circulating on social media and in various media outlets, suggesting Pastor Miller’s involvement in her demise,” his attorney Russell Long said in a statement to WPDE. “This created a buzz, causing local and national media outlets to begin proliferating these falsehoods, on a mammoth proportion. Our client refutes any report that suggests he ever abused his wife.”
John Paul’s attorney also pointed to Mica’s past mental health struggles.
“It has come to light that Mica Miller struggled with mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder, which, when not properly managed, led to paranoid episodes and self-destructive behavior,” the statement continued. “Again, Mica suffered from mental illness and some reports made by her in the recent past are nonsensical. This unfortunate reality underscores the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and ensuring those affected receive appropriate support and treatment.”
As part of their investigation, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that on the day of Mica’s death, John Paul was with a “female that he is allegedly romantically involved with” and that neither were in North Carolina.
They concluded that Mica’s death was a tragic suicide.
“This incident has garnered much attention from across the Carolinas and beyond,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said at the time. “I want to assure everyone that a very methodical investigation was conducted by our Criminal Investigations Team and Crime Scene Investigative Team.”
Still, in the years since Mica’s death, the case has gone viral as a #JusticeForMica campaign was launched.
John Paul Miller Faces Federal Charges
John Paul was never charged in connection to his wife’s death. However, federal prosecutors did charge him in December 2025 with cyberstalking in the months leading up to her death and making false statements to federal investigators. He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations against him.
In an indictment obtained by Oxygen, federal prosecutors allege John Paul used computers, electronic devices or other methods to cyberstalk Mica, putting her “in reasonable fear of death and serious bodily injury” and causing “emotional distress” before her death.
If convicted, John Paul faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for cyberstalking and two years in prison for the false statement charges.
After continuing an August court hearing, he is now expected to appear in court for a hearing on the charges in October, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office told Oxygen.
Where is John Paul Miller Now?
In the meantime, John Paul’s life has continued to move forward. One year after Mica’s death, John Paul remarried in 2025 in a beachside wedding ceremony, FITSNews reported.
As membership at his church continued to dwindle, Solid Rock Ministries Inc, eventually sold the church and land to a development group for $2.1 million, The Sun News reported in February.
At the time, John Paul pointed to the intense national attention in Mica’s case for leading to the church’s decline.
“The city of (Myrtle Beach) did not come through for us, they did not protect us, they did not stop the harassment,” Miller told the outlet via text of frequent protesters. “So after 70 years of that chapel being protected from category 5 hurricanes, wars, and redevelopment, it will now be torn down and have condos built in its place, thanks to the city of (Myrtle Beach).”
The Sun News reported in 2025 that the pastor continues to preach for a new congregation at Mercy Church.
Mica’s family is leading efforts to get a new law on coercive control, known as Mica’s Law, passed in South Carolina in her honor.
