Idaho Tragedy: Surviving Roommate of Murder Victims Reemerges on Social Media

0

In a poignant return to social media, Bethany Funke, a survivor of Bryan Kohberger’s brutal attack inside a student residence, has resurfaced online. This marks her first public appearance since the tragic events unfolded.

Funke, who is 23 years old, endured the horrific incident that claimed the lives of her friends Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin in Moscow, Idaho, back in November 2022. Her strength and resilience are a testament to her character as she navigates life after the tragedy.

Recently, Funke shared a glimpse into her healing journey through a new TikTok post. Donning a teal dress and a cross necklace, she revealed that painting has become her newfound passion. The inspiration for her artistic endeavor comes from the renowned painter and instructor Bob Ross, whose calming presence continues to influence aspiring artists worldwide.

In the video, she showcased a serene sunset river landscape to her 17,000 followers, with the soothing tones of Olivia Dean’s music providing a fitting soundtrack. This creative expression serves as a therapeutic outlet for Funke, allowing her to process her experiences and perhaps find some solace.

This video holds special significance as it is the sole post on her TikTok account under her name. Notably, her late friends, Goncalves, Kernodle, and Mogen, remain connected through their following of her page, a silent tribute to the enduring bond they shared.

Funke has remained incognito since the killings, nominating a friend of hers to issue an impact statement at Kohberger’s sentencing last year.

Only Funke and fellow roommate Dylan Mortensen survived the murders, with Mortensen waking up to see a man dressed in black stalking the halls of the home.

The two desperately tried to call and text their friends but got no response, Mortensen made her way to Funke’s room where they stayed until morning.

Around eight hours later, after the terrified students still could not get in touch with their friends, they called friends over to the home and the bloodbath was discovered.

Kohberger was arrested around six weeks later during a raid on his parents’ home in the Poconos region of Pennsylvania, where he had returned for the holidays.

Autopsy findings recently released have since laid bare the full horror of the attack, revealing he stabbed his victims over 150 times within 15 minutes.

He stabbed Goncalves at least 38 times, including 24 stab and incised wounds to her scalp face and neck, as well as 11 to the chest and three to her upper extremities.

She also suffered punctures to the skull, injuries to her teeth and tongue, perforations of the subclavian artery and vein, and internal bleeding into the chest cavities.

Mogen sustained 28 stab wounds, including 13 wounds to the scalp, face and neck, and 10 incised wounds to the upper extremities, and five stab wounds to the chest.

Kernodle was then stabbed 67 times inside her bedroom before Kohberger killed Chapin in his sleep, according to the autopsy report.

She had 25 wounds to the upper extremities, 23 stab to the scalp, face and neck, seven stab wounds to the chest and four to the abdomen, three to the back, and five to the lower extremities.

She also suffered punctures to the skull, perforations of the jugular vein, heart, lung and pulmonary blood vessels, hemorrhage into the chest cavities, wounds extending into the bones of the right hand, and scrapes and bruises to the face, torso and extremities.

Despite Chapin likely being the last victim, he had the fewest stab wounds, sustaining 17 in all: six incised wounds to the upper extremities; six stab and incised wounds to the lower extremities; four stab and incised wounds to the scalp, face and neck; and one stab wound to the upper chest; along with perforations of the jugular vein, subclavian vein and subclavian artery.

For more than two years, Kohberger fought the charges. Then, weeks before his trial, he changed his plea, pleading guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary on July 2.

The bombshell plea hearing came after he struck a controversial deal with prosecutors to take the death penalty off the table.

He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in an emotional hearing in Boise, Idaho, on July 23. Kohberger also waived his right to appeal.

The killer refused to speak at his sentencing and has never revealed his motive. No connection has ever been found between him and any of his victims.

Kohberger is now being held in solitary confinement inside the Idaho Maximum Security Institution where he will see out his dying days.

Honoring Heroes: Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – As the nation paused to honor those who served and never returned, the community of Johnson City gathered to pay tribute to Washington County’s fallen heroes.

The remembrance event took place on Monday at the Johnson City/Washington County Veterans’ Memorial Park, situated adjacent to Kiwanis Park on West Market Street’s 700 block.

Gary McAllister, the Chairman of the Johnson City/Washington County Memorial Foundation, shared with News Channel 11 the significance of Memorial Day. He emphasized that it is a day to remember that “some gave all, all gave some.”

“We want to ensure we never forget them,” McAllister expressed. “There are over 360 men from Washington County who didn’t return home. They never had the chance to grow old, meet their daughters or granddaughters, or get married.”

McAllister encouraged the community to express their gratitude by simply thanking a veteran or visiting the memorial to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the country.

“I came up here in the morning one time, and there was a woman and she was just touching names, she just said thank you,” McAllister said. “You can do that, that’s all we ask.”

WHO Director-General Affirms Current Stability of Hantavirus Situation

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced on Sunday that the current status of the hantavirus outbreak is “stable for now.”

Tedros detailed that the WHO has recorded 12 hantavirus cases and three fatalities, with no additional deaths reported since May 2. The outbreak is suspected to have emerged from South America, following the embarkation of infected travelers on the cruise ship MV Hondius earlier this month.

“All passengers and crew are in quarantine and are being closely monitored to ensure they receive necessary care,” Tedros shared via the social media platform X. “The situation is stable for now, but we are maintaining vigilance and staying in close communication with all concerned governments.”

This update follows an announcement from Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. last Friday. He declared that he had signed a Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act declaration aimed at facilitating the development and deployment of medical interventions for the Andes virus strain of hantavirus.

“This measure helps eliminate obstacles to research and response initiatives as we continue to track the recent outbreak linked to the South Atlantic cruise ship,” Kennedy stated in a social media post. “HHS is taking this matter seriously and will keep working to safeguard public health and support the safe development of potential treatments and countermeasures.”

Argentina’s Ministry of Health said a Dutch couple took part in a bird-watching tour that stopped at a garbage dump and they may have been exposed to infected rats. The couple, along with a German national, contracted the Andes strain and died.

Argentinian health officials said a team of scientific experts would be dispatched to investigate the origin of the outbreak, as the MV Hondius departed the country on April 1, the Associated Press previously reported.

Seventeen Americans and one British national exposed to hantavirus on the cruise ship were quarantined either in Nebraska or Georgia while health officials monitored them for symptoms. Most have not shown symptoms of hantavirus, though one person tested positive without being symptomatic, while another had mild symptoms but did not test positive.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier this month that there were no cases of the Andes strain in the U.S.

Health officials regularly assured that the outbreak did not resemble the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and emphasized the differences between both viruses when it came to close-contact infection and the incubation period.

But an outbreak of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease, in which there are more than 500 suspected cases in the Congo alone, prompted the WHO to declare the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

Hogan Leverages Sectional Pole Vault Personal Record to Propel into State Championship

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Riley Hogan, a senior at St. Thomas More, has qualified for the IHSA boys’ state track and field meet in two events, after securing sectional titles in both disciplines.

Hogan achieved a personal milestone by clearing 4.73 meters (15 feet, 6.25 inches) in the pole vault during the Tuscola sectional. Additionally, he clinched victory in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.83 seconds.

In the 2025 outdoor state meet, Hogan claimed eighth place in the 300 hurdles and was the runner-up in pole vault. The only competitor to surpass him in pole vault last year, Isaiah Whitaker from Bloomington-Central Catholic, has since moved to compete in the 2A category.

According to the 2026 heat sheets, Hogan enters the state meet with the third-highest mark among all 1A state qualifiers.

What steps must he take to surpass his personal best or vie for the top position on the podium?

“Finish my jumps,” he said. “Maybe focus a little bit more, lock in a little bit more and don’t take any run down the runway for granted.”

Hogan, a WCIA 3 Athlete of the Week earlier this spring, will continue his track career at Hillsdale Community College in Michigan after one last go with St. Thomas More.

1A prelims are set for Thursday, May 28. 2A and 3A prelims are May 29, before finals for all classes on Saturday, May 30.

WCIA is in its third week featuring a local high school track and field athlete every day leading up to the conclusion of the spring seasons, see below for more:

Experience the Revolutionary ‘Pistols and Pilates’ Workout: A Heart-Pounding Fitness Fusion

0

CHICAGO — I found myself drenched in sweat by the end of this unique fitness class.

Little did I know that my Friday evening would transition from perfecting pelvic tilts to mastering the art of pistol gripping, culminating with a session at the shooting range.

This was the experience offered by the innovative, women-exclusive “Pistols and Pilates” class, hosted in the Chicago suburb of Oak Forest, Illinois.

The intriguing fusion of core strengthening and firearms training has quickly gained traction in the Pilates community, following Eagle Sports Range’s promotion of these distinctive sessions.

Aseel Halloub, the mastermind behind this “guns-to-guns” initiative, explained that the class is designed to empower women.

“In the gun world, you do have a lot of women who just want to protect themselves,’’ she said.

It was also built around challenging stereotypes, according to Vivian Tadros, owner of Olive Pilates Studio and co-host of the event.

“Pilates has been known just to be for women, but men do it now – and guns are known for being men-only, but it shouldn’t be just one gender for each,” Tadros said, hinting at how the unlikely pairing taps into two broader cultural shifts happening across the US.

Women have become one of the fastest-growing groups of gun owners in the country, with around 20% packing heat since 2019 – up from the 16% who were strapped in between 2013-2018, according to a Gallup poll.

Pilates – a domain long considered to include predominantly young, liberal, white women – has meanwhile exploded across demographics, with nationwide participation growing 40% since 2019 — as everyone from pro athletes to retirees and suburbanites join studios in nearly every corner of the country.

Curious about how the seemingly counter-intuitive collision of Pilates and gun training would actually play out, I joined 24 other ladies ranging in their 20s to middle-aged for the planks and plinking on Friday.

Many of the women did not neatly fit the stereotypes of individuals often associated with either community.

Things kicked off with what I thought would be innocent enough: an hourlong mat Pilates class.

I quickly learned that it was not a cute little pregame stretch.

It was the kind of workout class where the instructor cheerfully chirps, “Small movements!” and, “Just a few more reps!” while every muscle in your body feels personally attacked.

We were encouraged to maintain the breathing and body control we’d just practiced while transitioning into a two-hour gun-safety course from tough-as-nails range trainer Nora Elkhatib.

“Our objective here isn’t to shoot anybody,” Elkhatib said. “It’s to protect ourselves. Us women are victims all the time.”

About half the class raised their hands when Elkhatib asked who already held Illinois concealed-carry permits, but only a couple of the women said they owned their own firearms.

A few had never shot a gun before.

Though my outdoorsman father had taken me shooting back home in northern Idaho a handful of times growing up, I felt terrifyingly underqualified when Elkhatib soon instructed us to retrieve unloaded .22-caliber pistols from the front table.

“Are these real?” I asked weakly, gripping the cold metal like it might detonate my hand.

My confidence didn’t improve when Elkhatib corrected my thumb placement during a drill in which we practiced our grip, stance and aim.

We were then marched to the nearby range, where bright pink silhouette targets awaited each of our 20 allotted rounds.

When my turn finally came, my legs felt oddly numb as I shuffled into one of the seven booths.

I leaned forward, frantically replaying Elkhatib’s aiming instructions in my head and pulled the trigger.

The recoil was minimal.

To my surprise, the shots hit the center of mass — not far from the flamingo-pink X.

The other shooters and I excitedly compared where our bullets had hit, while I asked what inspired them to attend the event in the first place.

“It’s something different. It’s not doing the typical thing, [like] going to a bar,” said Sonia Mirnda, 40.

“I’m like, OK, I got [a gun permit] two years ago, so I’m going to try it out,’’ the restaurant manager said.

Though Mirnda said she initially attended the event for the fitness portion, she soon realized it was “about so much more than wellness” – and left feeling “more comfortable” around firearms.

“We’re here for the Pilates class, but honestly I think it’s also [about] self-awareness…as a woman, to protect yourself,” she said.

Jazmyne Worthy, a 25-year-old healthcare worker, said she already carries a pistol and attended the class to “refresh” her gun knowledge and skills.

“I live alone, so firearm safety is very important to me,” she said.

Additionally, “I love Pilates,” she said with a laugh. “So this is the perfect mix.”

Worthy – who saw no contradiction between the pairing and she blasted the online haters who found the event’s premise distasteful.

“I don’t think it’s extreme at all, especially because I feel that more women need to be informed and educated on firearms, how to utilize them … so that they don’t have to feel like they need to rely on someone else to feel safe,” she said.

Halloub added, “Everyone should just respect everybody else’s opinions.

“Some people are not into Pilates, and some people are not into guns – completely understand that. You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.’’

As for me, I left “Pistols and Pilates” with sore glutes, decent aim and the refreshing realization that anyone can belong on a Pilates mat and at the firing range.

Ilhan Omar Faces GOP Pushback: Threats to Remove Foreign-Born Lawmakers Surface

0

Representative Ilhan Omar had a succinct two-word retort to a Republican proposal aimed at excluding foreign-born Americans from serving in Congress. This GOP-led initiative, which specifically targets naturalized citizens, was introduced on Capitol Hill, sparking discussions among lawmakers.

Last week, Representative Nancy Mace presented this proposal, which seeks to amend the Constitution. The amendment would mandate that all members of Congress, federal judges, and officials requiring Senate confirmation be natural-born American citizens.

This proposal mirrors the existing constitutional requirements for the presidency and vice presidency, where only natural-born citizens can hold these offices.

In response to a question from Fox News regarding this proposed amendment, the Minnesota Democrat, Ilhan Omar, dismissed it with a simple reply: “Good luck to her,” showing her nonchalant stance on the matter.

When advocating for her legislation, Mace was explicit about the individuals she aimed to address with this constitutional change.

In a blistering post on X announcing the measure, the South Carolina Republican singled out Omar alongside Democratic lawmakers Shri Thanedar and Pramila Jayapal.

All are foreign-born members of Congress who became US citizens after immigrating to America.

‘Ilhan Omar. Shri Thanedar. Pramila Jayapal. All born in foreign countries, none were citizens by birth. All sitting in the United States Congress. All making clear every single day their loyalty is not to America,’ Mace tweeted.

‘For too long we have allowed foreign born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America last, not America first. We see it every day. This constitutional amendment will put an end to it.’

The post immediately sent shockwaves through political circles and reignited long-running conservative attacks against Omar, one of the highest-profile progressive Democrats in Congress and one of the first Muslim women ever elected to the House.

Omar was born in Somalia and became a naturalized US citizen in 2000 after her family fled civil war and spent years in a refugee camp before arriving in the United States.

Despite the inflammatory rhetoric surrounding the proposal, Omar appeared entirely unfazed by the threat.

Asked whether she feared the measure could gain traction, the congresswoman indicated she was not worried the effort had any realistic chance of succeeding.

Changing the Constitution is among the most difficult processes in American politics, requiring approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate before ratification by three-quarters of US states.

At present, there is no indication the proposal has broad support from Republican leadership or enough backing to seriously advance through Congress.

Still, Mace defended the proposal in comments to Fox News arguing that people serving in powerful federal positions should have been American citizens from birth.

‘If you hold power in the American government, you should be a natural-born American citizen,’ Mace said.

‘For too long we have allowed foreign-born members to hold seats in this government, while making clear their loyalty is not here. We see it every day.’

According to congressional data, there are currently 26 foreign-born lawmakers serving in Congress – including 19 Democrats and seven Republicans.

The controversy escalated further when Omar was also asked about separate legislation proposed by Randy Fine that would prohibit dual citizens from serving in Congress unless they formally renounce citizenship in any other country.

The measure, titled the ‘Disqualifying Dual Loyalty Act,’ was introduced last year and argues lawmakers should owe allegiance solely to the United States.

When asked about the bill, Omar appeared unfamiliar with it.

‘Who’s that?’ she responded when Fine’s name was mentioned.

Fine later defended his legislation in a statement, saying: ‘I think it’s a fair argument to say you can only swear allegiance to one country, and if you’re in Congress, that allegiance should be to America.’

‘This bill ensures that the people making laws for our citizens are themselves fully committed to our country, not divided between two.’

Heartfelt Tribute: How One Gold Star Wife’s Request for Her Husband’s Arlington Grave Photos Sparked a Wave of Support

0

In a poignant piece in Monday’s Morning Minute column, our Deputy Managing Editor, Susie Moore, highlighted a touching request shared by a grieving widow on social media. Unable to visit Arlington National Cemetery herself for Memorial Day, she reached out for help, expressing profound gratitude to anyone who could photograph her husband’s grave.

Her post on X read, “This is probably a long shot, but if anybody happens to be in DC this weekend and plans on visiting Arlington, I would love to see a fresh photo of my husband’s grave in Section 60.”

It was a simple plea, identifying her husband as “SSG Alan W. Shaw.”

While she may have anticipated a modest response, the outpouring of support she received was beyond her expectations.

As Susie Moore recounted, independent journalist Nick Sortor was among the first to rise to the occasion, promising to fulfill her request—and he certainly did.

As Susie wrote, independent journalist Nick Sortor quickly stepped up to the plate and said he would deliver, and deliver he did:

Good rainy morning from Arlington National Cemetery.

Specifically, the final resting place of your hero husband Staff Sgt. Alan Shaw.

His grave now has some fresh roses placed in front of it, alongside two American flags, a reminder that Americans truly appreciate his sacrifice.

God bless you and your family on this Memorial Day 🙏🏻🇺🇸

Sortor was far from the only patriot to make the effort — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, a veteran herself who is stepping down from her post following revelations that her husband has been diagnosed with a serious form of blood cancer — also came to honor SSG Shaw’s memory:

It was an honor to visit your husband’s grave today on your behalf, and to pay my respects. It was wonderful to see the beautiful flowers representing many others who did the same. Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to the loved ones they left behind. Thank you for your service and sacrifice

@SharrellAnne2 🙏🏽

Sharrell Anne wrote back with a poignant message:

Tulsi, thank you. Not just for taking the time to visit Alan today, but for understanding the weight of that sacrifice in a way few people ever truly will.

You answered the call to serve this country just like he did. You know what it means to put on the uniform, to stand willing to give everything in defense of this nation, and that makes this gesture mean even more to our family.

There Would Be No 4th of July Without Memorial Day: Trump’s Powerful Arlington Message

Senior Legal Analyst for The Federalist Margot Cleveland expressed her condolences and asked, “What was Alan like?” Sharrell Anne answered with a moving post:

Alan was the funniest person I’ve ever known. Loud in the best way. The kind of man whose presence filled a room the second he walked into it. His laugh was always genuine, and people were naturally drawn to him.

He was a leader, but not in the loud, self-important way some people try to be. People followed him because they trusted him. He loved hard and fought harder, and he was fiercely devoted to the people he cared about.

He was a devoted son, brother, and friend long before he became my husband. We were young and messy and imperfect sometimes, but through all of it, he was my best friend.

I’ll forever be thankful that out of everybody in this world, he chose us.

Thank you for asking about him. Talking about him through the years has played a huge role in our healing process. ♥️

You are missed, Alan, and we thank you for your service.

Meanwhile, an army of freedom lovers came to pay their respects to Alan throughout the day:

There were many other tributes Monday, probably due to the fact that Sharrell Anne’s original post has been viewed an incredible four million times.

At times, this country can seem hopelessly divided and unsalvageable. This outpouring of love, patriotism, and respect for the military that makes the United States a possibility, however, shows that there is still much to be optimistic about, and that there are millions of wonderful Americans out there.

We must keep fighting for our country, just as SSG Alan W. Shaw would do if he were here.

Open Heaven 26 May 2026 TOPIC – Strength Is Not Enough (2)

MEMORISE: Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah. – Psalm 84:4 (KJV)

READ: Isaiah 40:28-31(KJV)

28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Esther 6-10

Open Heaven 26 May 2026 MESSAGE

Yesterday, we saw how Peter fell into temptation because he couldn’t keep watch in prayer (Matthew 26:40-43). Prayerlessness is one of the signs that a believer is relying on his or her own strength. Unlike Peter, however, David kept watch day and night in the place of prayer (Psalm 55:17). He often stayed awake at night, spending time with God and meditating on His word (Psalm 63:6, Psalm 119:148). He was so aware of the limitations of his strength that on many occasions in the Bible, he enquired of the Lord to know what He wanted him to do (1 Samuel 23:1-5, 1 Samuel 30:8-9). However, in 2 Samuel 11, where he obviously didn’t enquire of the Lord but rather gave in to lust, he got into a predicament that negatively impacted his lineage (2 Samuel 12:9-12).

Daniel also knew the importance of prayer. He knew how much he needed God in the strange land of Babylon, and the Bible tells us that he prayed thrice daily (Daniel 6:10). Even when a decree was made that nobody should pray to anyone except the king, he was too aware of the limitations of his strength that his first reaction was to open his windows and pray as usual. His response to everything was prayer.

Prayer is so important that the Bible urges us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The moment you don’t feel like praying or see the need to pray is actually the time to pray more intently because prayerlessness can leave a believer in a weak state and cause such a believer to lose his or her spiritual vitality. Once the devil douses a believer’s spiritual fire, he can ruin him or her. Praying puts us in a posture of humility before God, where we acknowledge that we cannot do anything without Him. It keeps our hearts tender and reminds us of the limitations of our physical strength. When we cultivate a lifestyle of waiting on God in prayer, we renew our strength daily (Isaiah 40:31) and are able to overcome the devil’s temptations (Matthew 26:41).

Beloved, how do you respond to life’s challenges? Do you always try to solve them with your wisdom and strength first? Do you only run to God when everything you’ve tried fails? Do not make God a spare wheel in your life; rather, He should always be your first resort. Cultivate the habit of praying without ceasing, and you will live victoriously all the days of your life, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 26 May 2026 KEY POINT

When you cultivate a lifestyle of prayer, you will tap into the Lord’s strength daily.

Open Heaven 26 May 2026 HYMN 22 – Sweet Hour Of Prayer!

1 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of
prayer!
that calls me from a world of care,
and bids me at my Father’s throne
make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
my soul has often found relief,
and oft escaped the tempter’s snare
by thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

2 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of
prayer!
the joys I feel, the bliss I share
of those whose anxious spirits burn
with strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
where God my Savior shows his face,
and gladly take my station there,
and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

3 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of
prayer!
thy wings shall my petition bear
to him whose truth and faithfulness
engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since he bids me seek his face,
believe his word, and trust his grace,
I’ll cast on him my every care,
and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Florida Highway Patrol Launches Investigation into Fatal Hit-and-Run on SW Archer Road
