Trump Administration Defends Legality of Controversial Deportation Flights: What You Need to Know

(AP Photo/Evan Vucci).

The Trump administration is urging a federal appeals court to uphold its earlier decision to halt a contempt investigation regarding the deportation of several immigrants to El Salvador. This inquiry was initially launched by a district court judge known for opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

In mid-April, a split panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit effectively halted the investigation through a mandamus order. This decision came nearly a year after the lower court’s ruling, which had sparked the controversy following the detainees’ habeas corpus petitions and other legal pleas.

Earlier this month, the American Civil Liberties Union, representing the deported immigrants, requested a full court review of the case. In response, the U.S. Department of Justice has filed an opposition to the ACLU’s petition for an en banc hearing, asserting that the judges made the correct decision initially and reproaching the lower court for its persistent scrutiny of the executive branch.

Earlier this month, the American Civil Liberties Union, representing the illegally deported immigrants, asked the full court to reconsider.

Now, the U.S. Department of Justice has filed its opposition to the ACLU’s petition for a hearing en banc, telling the judges they got the issues right the first time and, in stark terms, chiding the lower court over its continued efforts to investigate the executive branch.

“The panel in this case granted a writ of mandamus to stop the district court from conducting a wide-ranging inquisition into national-security and foreign-policy deliberations of senior Executive officials, including by putting the Government’s counsel of record on the stand for cross-examination by opposing counsel—all in service of a potential referral for criminal contempt that is legally foreclosed by the fact that the Government did not violate any court order,” the 20-page opposition motion begins.

On April 16, 2025, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, a jurist who got his start under George W. Bush and who was later promoted by Barack Obama, found probable cause that the government was in contempt. That contempt finding was in response to the admitted violation of a March 2025 court order directing the Trump administration to turn two planes around containing 238 Venezuelan immigrants who were bound for a notorious prison in El Salvador under the auspices of the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) of 1798.

On April 14, 2026, the appellate court told Boasberg to back off. The opinion was penned and joined by U.S. Circuit Judges Neomi Rao and Justin Walker, respectively, who were appointed by Trump. In dissent was Circuit Judge J. Michelle Childs, an Obama appointee.

To hear the ACLU tell it, the panel’s ruling conflicts with what the Trump administration itself understood about the case.

“The panel’s 2-1 ruling mandated that Chief Judge Boasberg end his criminal contempt inquiry into the brazen violation of his order not to remove Plaintiffs to El Salvador—a violation that resulted in Plaintiffs being subjected to months of abuse and torture at the notorious CECOT prison,” the reconsideration motion begins.

Not so, says the Trump administration.

“The panel agreed that courts have the power to enforce their orders, including through referral for criminal contempt,” the opposition motion goes on. “Instead, the panel merely concluded that, on these facts, no contempt charge could succeed because the plain meaning of the district court’s injunction did not prohibit the Government’s conduct, and that in all events the testimony that the district court sought to compel was irrelevant to a potential referral while needlessly inviting a clash between the Judiciary and the Executive.”

To hear the DOJ tell it, three members of the D.C. Circuit “have now agreed that the Government’s actions” in March 2025, meaning the deportation flights, “did not violate any court orders.”

The Trump administration has long maintained that Boasberg’s order, issued from the bench, was not clear, either because it was not written out, not specific enough, because the order was too broad, because the DOJ counsel did not understand the order, or for other reasons.

In turn, Boasberg has tried for months to get to the bottom of whether various officials willfully violated his March 15, 2025, temporary restraining order when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pushed ahead with AEA removals of hundreds of men the government alleged were affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang.

The government now says the issue should no longer be debated.

“Given that criminal contempt can lie only from violation of a clear and unambiguous order, those conclusions are fatal to any such charge—whether this case is reheard en banc or not. Rehearing would thus only raise the temperature (and tee up a series of difficult questions that the panel did not have to confront), without serving any real purpose,” the latest motion continues. “The Court should deny the petition.”

And, in any event, the DOJ says any contempt finding that could have been issued should have been issued at an earlier time.

“The district court embarked on this treacherous path even though no further information was necessary for the district court to make a referral if it still believed one to be warranted,” the latest motion argues. “The panel’s decision was correct.”

UK Navy Gears Up for Mine-Clearing Mission in the Strategic Strait of Hormuz Amid Peace Talks

0

ABOARD THE RFA LYME BAY (AP) — Positioned off Gibraltar’s coastline, the RFA Lyme Bay stands ready, with a full contingent of British sailors poised for a potential mine-clearing mission in the Strait of Hormuz, though its commencement remains uncertain.

U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized allies for their lack of support in the U.S. initiative against Iran, whose control over the strategic strait has significantly disrupted global shipping routes and driven up energy costs. Trump, in March, urged NATO partners to independently secure their oil supplies and manage the strait’s security themselves.

In Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory situated at the southern extremity of the Iberian Peninsula, the U.K. Royal Navy is gearing up for action, contingent upon the finalization of a peace accord. According to Trump, a tentative agreement with Iran has been reached following discussions with Israel and other regional partners, though details are still being ironed out.

During a recent visit to the RFA Lyme Bay, Britain’s Armed Forces Minister, Al Carns, escorted a select group of journalists to observe preparations for a possible multinational mission spearheaded by the U.K. and France to secure the strait. The amphibious vessel, stationed at the entrance to the Mediterranean, was in the midst of being outfitted with ammunition and sonar-equipped mine-hunting sea drones.

The RFA Lyme Bay, manned by a crew of several hundred, is set to leave Gibraltar shortly. It will rendezvous with the U.K. destroyer HMS Dragon and other allied vessels for air cover, before navigating through the Suez Canal en route to the Persian Gulf.

After the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28, Tehran retaliated by effectively closing the strait, a key waterway for the region’s oil, natural gas and fertilizer, causing global economic pain. The U.K. in particular has drawn the ire of Trump, who has described Britain’s navy as “toys” and Prime Minister Keir Starmer as “not Winston Churchill.”

At least 6,000 ships have been blocked from passing through the strait since the conflict began, Carns said.

There could be a range of threats from Iran’s mines

Iran could have a “huge” variety of mines throughout strait, said Cmdr. Gemma Britton, who is in charge of the Royal Navy’s Mine and Threat Exploitation Group. Mines could be rocket-propelled, cabled or sit on the seabed and be triggered by sound, movement or light.

AP was shown autonomous systems that can scan the seabed and the water with sonar in about half the time it takes for a crewed vessel to enter and map potential dangers. The sea drones equipped with sonar produce a picture of objects under the water, from fishing traps to pipelines. The picture is used to identify mines that can be explored with advanced acoustic systems and cameras, Britton said.

Some of the systems on the RFA Lyme Bay can be loaded onto a smaller vessel that can be launched and piloted autonomously from the ship, which acts as a mother ship, waiting outside any potential minefield, Britton said. That reduces the number of people needed to enter, she said.

Once a mine has been located, a diver with explosives normally places a charge on the mine before swimming away to detonate it. But RFA Lyme Bay is trialing a remotely operated vehicle that dives and drops a charge by a mine before setting it off, Britton said.

The priority, she said, will be to clear a transit lane in the strait to allow around 700 ships to leave. A lane flowing in the opposite direction will then be cleared, allowing ships to enter, she said, but added that clearing the entire strait could take months or years.

It’s still not clear if the UK and its allies will be deployed

It’s still not clear if any mines are in the strait — or if the U.K. and its allies will be deploying to remove them.

When asked by AP if the British effort was partly for show, to curry favor with the U.S., Carns said he was sure some mines had been blown up or floated away but that assurance is not good enough for commercial insurance companies. He said those companies need “absolute certainty” to get vessels traveling through the strait again.

“That’s what this capability will provide,” he said.

The international effort to secure the strait would happen only once hostilities are over.

“Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly,” Trump said Saturday on social media, with no details on timing.

This is not the first time in recent weeks that a deal has been described as close.

“We don’t know when the Americans, Iranians and Israelis are going to come up with a suitable solution,” Carns said.

In the meantime, the RFA Lyme Bay and its crew will be waiting and will be “really, really ready,” Carns said.

Tragic Shark Attack Claims Life of Australian Man at Great Barrier Reef

0

A tragic incident at the Great Barrier Reef on Sunday resulted in the death of a 39-year-old man following a shark attack, as reported by police. This marks the second deadly shark encounter in Australia this month.

The victim was quickly transported to shore after being bitten near Kennedy Shoal, a shallow area located approximately 28 miles from Queensland’s northeastern coastline, according to a representative from the Queensland Police Service.

Upon reaching the shore, medical personnel were on standby, but sadly, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. His identity has not been disclosed by the authorities.

This incident comes shortly after another fatal attack on May 16, when a 38-year-old was killed by a shark near an island close to Perth in Western Australia.

Although Australia experiences about 20 shark attacks annually, the majority are not fatal, as indicated by data from conservation organizations.

Far more people drown on the country’s beaches.

Dozens of beaches along Australia’s east coast, including in Sydney, were closed in January after four shark attacks in two days.

Those attacks came as heavy rains created murky water that attracts sharks and reduces their visibility.

CVS Executive’s Daughter Sparks Controversy by Taunting Luigi Mangione’s Family in Court: A Shocking Twist

0

A fervent supporter of Luigi Mangione, who recently made headlines for mocking the family of the murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, outside a courthouse, has been identified as the daughter of a prominent healthcare industry figure.

Lena Weissbrot, one of three individuals who call themselves ‘Mangionistas’ and faced public outrage for celebrating Thompson’s demise outside the Manhattan Supreme Court, is the daughter of Reina Natero, a senior executive in medical affairs at CVS Health.

This revelation follows closely on the heels of Weissbrot’s provocative statements at Mangione’s evidence suppression hearing in New York, where he is set to face trial for Thompson’s murder.

Weissbrot, along with her friends Ashley Rojas and Abril Rios, managed to acquire official press credentials and conducted interviews with the media outside the courthouse, expressing their support for the accused shooter.

Commenting on Thompson’s death, Weissbrot remarked, “I liked it. His children are better off without him. They need to learn not to emulate their father. And enjoy the blood money, kids!”

The comments triggered outrage online and renewed scrutiny of the growing subculture of Mangione supporters who view the alleged killer as a vigilante-style hero taking on the medical insurance industry.

Weissbrot and her acolytes have become fixtures around the sensational murder case, which has drawn an increasingly fervent online following since Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania days after Thompson’s killing.

Thompson, a father of two, was shot dead on December 4, 2024, outside a UnitedHealthcare investor conference in Manhattan. Prosecutors allege Mangione used a 9mm ‘ghost gun’ in the ambush-style slaying.

Is it ever justifiable to publicly celebrate the murder of a controversial corporate figure?

Bullets recovered at the scene allegedly carried the words ‘Delay, Deny, Defend’ – language viewed as a reference to criticisms often leveled against the health insurance industry.

Outside Monday’s hearing, Weissbrot repeatedly defended Mangione and framed the accused killer as a symbol of public rage against corporate America.

She argued Thompson ‘was responsible for more deaths than Osama bin Laden’ because of his role in the healthcare industry.

‘And I remember Americans celebrating when Osama bin Laden was killed,’ Weissbrot said. ‘Our government and these health insurance companies, they’re literally stealing our money and using it to kill us.

‘Like, come on – the American people need to stand up for themselves. It’s about time. It’s beyond time.’

Rojas was equally blunt: ‘I’m saying f*** Brian Thompson. I don’t give a flying f*** he died,’ she told the Daily News outside court. ‘F*** Brian Thompson. F*** his mom.’

Meanwhile, Rios questioned the meaning of the Second Amendment as the group spoke outside the courthouse.

‘I mean, why do we protect the Second Amendment so much?’ Rios said. ‘Is it to allow people to shoot up schools? Or is it to protect democracy?’

Weissbrot interjected: ‘It is to kill tyrants!’

The trio’s comments quickly went viral, but scrutiny intensified further after details emerged about Weissbrot’s family background.

According to public records and archived online profiles, Natero has spent more than two decades working across the pharmaceutical and insurance sectors, including positions tied to prescription coverage decisions.

Records also indicate Weissbrot and Natero previously shared an address in St. Petersburg, Florida, before Weissbrot attended Florida State University.

When confronted about the apparent connection by the New York Post, Weissbrot denied that Natero was her mother, while also describing the relationship as estranged.

Investigators and social media users also unearthed a provocative music video posted online earlier this year featuring Weissbrot performing under the name ‘Fellatia G.’

In the video, she raps lines attacking CEOs and billionaires while imagery of firearms and guillotines flashes onscreen.

One lyric references CEOs ‘getting shot up,’ while another calls for ‘billionaires in body bags.’

Weissbrot describes herself online as a game developer, artist and musician. She previously received a Fulbright-mtvU fellowship tied to research involving feminist hip-hop artists in South Africa.

Her emergence as one of the loudest Mangione supporters has baffled observers across the political spectrum – particularly given her apparent family ties.

The other members of the so-called ‘Mangionista’ trio have also faced growing scrutiny.

Rios, who has worked in visual effects and modeling, has posted extensively online about Mangione and progressive political causes.

Public records indicate her father works in enterprise cybersecurity, while her stepfather has credits in the film industry.

Rojas, meanwhile, previously worked retail and bakery jobs before pursuing journalism studies in New York, according to publicly available profiles.

The controversy erupted as Mangione scored a mixed legal victory during Monday’s hearing.

Judge Gregory Carro ruled prosecutors can introduce a notebook and the alleged ghost gun recovered during Mangione’s arrest as evidence at trial.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty. His trial remains scheduled for October.

Redmond Fawcett’s Heartache: The Universally Relatable Struggles of Farrah Fawcett’s Only Son

Note: This article addresses themes of addiction.

Redmond O’Neal, the sole child of the iconic Farrah Fawcett, has endured a life marked by tragedy, particularly in his battle with severe drug addiction. This struggle has not only imprisoned him physically but has also cost him dearly in other aspects of life. The challenges faced by Redmond, born to the late “Charlie’s Angels” star and actor Ryan O’Neal, mirror those of many celebrity offspring, highlighting a well-documented pattern of addiction within this group.

A study from 1984, featured in the Sage Journal, identified parental absence, low self-esteem, and a lack of clear life goals as primary contributors to this issue. Contemporary experts add dysfunctional family dynamics and genetic predispositions to the list. At the time of this writing, Redmond awaits trial following a five-year stay in a psychiatric facility related to a 2018 stabbing incident. Born into the tumultuous relationship between Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal, he was surrounded by several of these risk factors. Allegations of abuse by Ryan towards Fawcett were made by his daughter, Tatum O’Neal, who claimed in a 1999 Talk magazine interview (as reported by E! News) that Ryan had exhibited violent behavior.

The O’Neal family has been no stranger to addiction. Ryan, along with his children Tatum and Griffin, has faced similar struggles. Griffin O’Neal openly discussed the impact of addiction on his family in a 2015 interview with People, stating, “My whole family has been absolutely destroyed to smithereens from drug addiction and alcoholism.” This underscores the genetic component of addiction. Additionally, Redmond’s early foray into acting didn’t provide the direction he needed, leaving him without clear life goals and unable to escape the cycle of addiction that seemed almost preordained.

Redmond O’Neal has been candid about the influences that shaped his path. In a 2018 interview from jail with Radar, he candidly attributed his difficulties to his upbringing, rather than the drugs themselves. “It’s not the drugs that have been a problem, it’s the psychological trauma of my entire life — my whole life experiences have affected me the most,” he confessed, highlighting the profound impact of his turbulent family life on his personal struggles.

Redmond O’Neal has discussed the connection between his life and addiction

Redmond O’Neal wasn’t oblivious to the risk factors he faced. In fact, Redmond straight out blamed his parents for his struggles. Speaking to Radar from jail in 2018, Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal’s son discussed how he believed his life experiences had driven him to addiction. “It’s not the drugs that have been a problem, it’s the psychological trauma of my entire life — my whole life experiences have affected me the most,” he said.

Redmond cited his father’s violent approach to his upbringing, being thrown out of his home, homelessness, going to jail, psychiatric hospital confinement, and his parents’ fame as contributing factors to his declining mental health. “The pressure that came with that set off a time-bomb in my head. I never asked for any of this, I never wanted any attention,” he said. Even though his siblings also faced addiction, Redmond arguably experienced the most extreme version. “I love him, but I have never seen a more scary side of addiction,” Tatum O’Neal told People in 2015.

His mother did her best to help her only son, but it was never enough. Fawcett died from cancer in 2009, years before Redmond’s arrest. In some ways, loved ones are grateful she didn’t see her son’s downfall. “The whole situation with Redmond has been heartbreaking for everyone who knew Farrah. They all remember how devoted she was to him,” a source told the National Enquirer in March 2026, after he appeared in court on attempted murder and other charges.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction issues, help is available. Visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website or contact SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).

DR Congo Dismisses US Warnings: Paves Bold Path to 2026 World Cup Glory

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reportedly declined to adhere to a United States directive mandating a 21-day isolation period for their team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This requirement, aimed at curbing potential health risks, specifically addresses concerns about an Ebola outbreak in the Congo.

U.S. authorities have emphasized that without strict compliance with these health protocols, the Congolese delegation might face entry restrictions into the country. Despite these warnings, officials from DR Congo are determined to proceed with their World Cup preparations as initially planned.

Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House Task Force for the World Cup, disclosed that the team had received clear instructions to maintain a controlled “bubble” environment for three weeks before their scheduled arrival in the United States.

US issues strict “bubble” warning

“We’ve communicated explicitly to Congo that maintaining the integrity of their bubble for 21 days is crucial before they travel to Houston on June 11,” Giuliani shared with ESPN. The insistence on these health measures underscores the heightened precautions being taken to ensure a safe and successful tournament.

“We’ve been very clear to Congo that they should maintain the integrity of their bubble for 21 days before they can then come to Houston on June 11,” Giuliani told ESPN.

“We’ve made it very clear to the Congo government as well that they need to maintain that bubble or they risk not being able to travel to the United States. We cannot be any clearer.”

The warning follows an outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in DR Congo, which has prompted heightened international concern.

Friendlies to continue despite threat

Despite the American stance, the Congolese federation has no intention of changing its pre-tournament schedule.

The team is still expected to face Denmark in Belgium on June 3 before travelling to Spain for a friendly against Chile on June 9.

According to Reuters, a team spokesperson said: “We have kept our training programme. No player in the squad has come from DR Congo. The friendly matches are still scheduled. The only modification to the programme has been the cancellation of the Kinshasa leg.”

The federation argues that the entire squad and coaching staff are Europe-based, reducing the risk of exposure.

WHO raises Ebola risk level

The diplomatic tension intensified after the World Health Organization raised the outbreak risk level to “very high”.

Nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths have reportedly been linked to the outbreak in DR Congo, leading to increased scrutiny from global health authorities.

DR Congo are scheduled to open their World Cup campaign against Portugal on June 17 in Houston before facing Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage.

Any decision by US authorities to block the team’s entry could create major disruption for the tournament just weeks before kickoff.

Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man in Tactical Gear During Intense Standoff

A man, clad in camouflage tactical gear and armed with a long-arm rifle, was fatally shot by police on the outskirts of Brisbane during a domestic violence incident, as confirmed by the police union.

The 48-year-old was reportedly encountered by officers responding to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Cavill Place in Narangba around 12:30 a.m. He allegedly confronted the police upon their arrival.

According to reports, the man had been making threats, and the situation quickly intensified, as described by Shane Prior of the Queensland Police Union.

A man who was shot dead by police in Narangba allegedly confronted officers with a tactical vest and a long-arm rifle. (9News)

“Upon arrival, the officers were met by a man, familiar to them, who approached the front door dressed in camouflage and wielding what appeared to be a rifle,” Prior explained to the media.

“The individual directly threatened the officers with the rifle, prompting them to resort to lethal force, discharging their service-issued firearms and firing multiple rounds,” he added.

Prior added the man was wearing a tactical vest, and said the man had “some sort of army background”.

Officers provided first aid and CPR, and paramedics arrived soon after, but the man died at the scene.

Prior said initial investigations suggested there may have been mental health issues at play.

“Tragically, suicide by cop is a very real thing that needs to be investigated here,” he said.

Prior added the union was fully supporting the police officers involved, both of whom were impacted by the shooting.

Shane Prior said it was a "traumatic" incident for the police officers involved.

“Both officers are very shaken up by today’s incidents, one more than the other,” he said.

“This is a very traumatic event.”

Acting Superintendent Kerry Johnson confirmed there were other people in the house at the time of the shooting, and that the man who died was subject to some form of order, though he refused to confirm if it was a specific domestic violence order.

“When police arrived, he was originally inside. [They] were making their inquiries at the front door, this other interaction with a family member, and that’s when he’s confronted police,” Johnson said.

“It’s happened very quickly, and unfortunately these are the things that happen in policing, it can escalate and de-escalate.”

Kerry Johnson from Queensland Police said it was too early to make an overall judgment of the police's actions.

Nobody else was injured and police say there is no ongoing risk to the community.

As the shooting is classed as a death in custody, it is now a coronial matter. Ethical standards command is also investigating the shooting.

Johnson said he could not make a full judgment on the validity of the police officers’ actions this early in the investigation, but he believes at this early stage, there is no cause for concern.

“It’s up to the officers at the time to determine what they’re going to do… unfortunately, the 48-year-old with his confrontation and behaviour, unfortunately [forced] them to escalate and the action was taken,” he said.

“It’s alarming to do what we have done, but there’s nothing at this stage to cause concern about the police actions.”

Tulsi Gabbard’s Departure Triggers Intense Backlash from Democrats and Media

0

Democrats and media commentators are under scrutiny for what some are calling an “inappropriate” reaction to Tulsi Gabbard’s decision to step down from her role as Director of National Intelligence. Her resignation follows the troubling news of her husband’s cancer diagnosis.

Tony Kinnett, a national correspondent for The Daily Signal, expressed his concerns about the way many have responded to Gabbard’s announcement during his appearance on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” He criticized what he described as an immediate shift to political discourse.

“The social media ecosystem, along with many analysts and pundits, seems to be driven by the urge to make the most provocative comments as soon as news breaks,” Kinnett remarked. He suggested that such reactions reveal “how appalling the character of many individuals can be.”

Gabbard is expected to serve until June 30, marking her final day in office. Fox News Digital has acquired her resignation letter, where she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve. She also revealed her husband’s recent diagnosis with an extremely rare form of bone cancer, prompting her decision to resign.

Fox News Digital obtained her formal resignation letter in which she stated she is “deeply grateful” for the opportunity but noted that her husband, Abraham, “has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”

But some members of the media and Democratic Party criticized Gabbard following her decision to leave her post.

Guests on CNN took aim at Gabbard’s tenure, with former Deputy DNI Beth Sanner offering condolences before jabbing that her DNI title stood for “Do Not Invite.”

Democratic lawmakers offered similar sentiments. Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., took to social media to say the resignation was her only positive contribution to the role.

“While the circumstances around her departure are deserving of our sympathy, let’s be clear: Tulsi Gabbard’s only positive contribution to our nation’s national security is her resignation,” Schiff wrote on X.

But Kinnett argued that the quick jump to politics on a deeply personal issue reflects what he described as a troubling shift in political commentary.

“The most principled thing you can do as a wife is to leave something behind, as a spouse in general, is to leave your career behind,” Kinnett said.

He added that the negative reaction reflected what he called a “lack of character” from critics.

Gabbard assumed office in February 2025 and is a US Army Reserve officer and combat veteran. She previously served in Congress for multiple terms as a Democrat before leaving the party to become an independent and later joining the Republican Party.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard noted that her husband has been her “rock” throughout their 11 years of marriage and during difficult deployments overseas.

She wrote that she “cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position.”

President Trump responded to the resignation on Truth Social, writing that she “rightfully” wants to support her husband during a tough battle.

“I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever. Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her,” he wrote.

New Map Unveils Potential Impact Zone of Unstable Chemical Tank Explosion

0

An updated map has delineated the danger zone surrounding an imminent explosion threat from a chemical tank at an aerospace site in California.

Following a toxic leak alert on Thursday afternoon, officials prompted the evacuation of over 40,000 residents from the area near Garden Grove.

The source of concern is a 34,000-gallon tank at the GKN Aerospace facility, which holds methyl methacrylate (MMA), a volatile substance crucial in the production of acrylic plastics.

Efforts by authorities to control the leak have been ineffective so far, leading to dire warnings that an explosion or rupture is inevitable.

“This is not a precautionary measure; failure is imminent, though we can’t predict when,” stated Craig Covey, Division Chief of the Orange County Fire Authority.

On Saturday, officials released a map showing the potential blast zones should the tank explode, along with nearby areas that could be affected from the impact.

The severe damage blast zone consists of the innermost circle closest to the tank, representing areas where ‘severe structural damage and significant harm’ are expected.

Just outside are the moderate damage blast zone and light blast damage zone, where officials predict more limited structural damage and potential harm, though less severe.

At the center of a map is a dark red oval indicating where flammable conditions could spark a fire or flash fire.

The orange oval, officials said, marks areas immediately dangerous to life and health,  where exposure could ’cause injury if anyone inhales or is impacted by the product in question.’

Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Nick Freeman warned that the highly toxic chemical poses severe health risks to people and animals in this area, particularly to the respiratory system.

‘Respiratory is our primary concern, so it’s a respiratory irritant,’ he told KTLA.

‘It can start off very mild but it can progress to a point where you would probably require hospitalization, if not more.’

Orange County Health Officer Dr Regina Chinsio-Kwong added that inhaling the vapor could cause dizziness, nausea, and, at high levels, severe respiratory distress.

‘When you have limited, short-term exposure, meaning maybe you inhaled some of the vapor, it can cause significant irritation in the lungs, the nasal passages,’ she told the outlet.

The final and largest area – the yellow oval zone – is considered a non-hazardous zone, marking the odor threshold.

Freeman said: ‘This product has a very low odor threshold and can be smelled very easily, so that’s why the area is very large, but it is non-hazardous at that level.’

Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey said: 'This thing is going to fail, and we don't know when'

Chinsio-Kwong explained that the chemical has a strong, fruity scent, but noted that ‘smelling it doesn’t mean it will have health impacts.’

‘We know that when you smell it, you don’t typically have symptoms and when you actually measure the levels in the air, it doesn’t mean it’s dangerous,’ she told KTLA.

‘But again, if you are not in the evacuation zones, we do not expect any health impacts.’

She also stressed that the evacuation zone was based on a worst-case scenario, and urged all residents to stay away from evacuated areas.

‘If you are not in the evacuation zone, you do not need to worry,’ she added, noting that masks are not necessary. ‘If you remain in the evacuation zone, that’s where your risk increases.’

‘We have taken all the things into consideration and the map and blast zone map is just thinking about the worst case scenario. If you were told to evacuate, please evacuate because we’re trying to keep in mind your safety.’

Forty-thousand to 50,000 people have already fled their homes amid what officials are describing as an ‘unprecedented industrial disaster’ rapidly heading toward catastrophe.

Late Saturday, Orange County prosecutors announced an investigation into the aerospace company, with District Attorney Todd Spitzer calling the situation ‘horrific.’

Spitzer revealed that the investigation will examine both GKN Aerospace and the overheating chemical tank that triggered the mass evacuation.

In an interview with the Orange County Register, he argued that any responsible contractor working with chemicals would avoid such grave failures.

‘It is certainly unreasonable to believe that any responsible defense contractor that makes aircraft windows and uses in the process would have failures of its cooling system that maintains the safety level of its chemicals,’ Spitzer said.

‘There will be incredible costs associated with this situation and I’m going to be front and center in making sure people are made whole,’ he added.

The DA’s office has also opened a hotline for workers or insiders with information about what went wrong at the plant.

Prosecutors are now looking into facility operations, including maintenance practices, and whether prior warning signs were ignored.

Tipsters were urged to contact the OCDA anonymous hotline, email prosecutors, or submit information online.

Regarding the tank, officials said only two outcomes remain.

‘One, it fails and cracks and all the product leaks out onto the ground,’ Chief Covey said. ‘The other option that was told to us is that it blows up.’

The crisis unfolded at the major manufacturer of engine structures and aerospace components for commercial and military aircraft at around 3.30pm Thursday.

Firefighters first responded after vapors began escaping from the massive storage tank at the company’s Garden Grove facility.

Officials said the tank’s temperature rose, triggering a relief valve designed to safely release pressure.

At first, crews believed they had stabilized the situation after deploying cooling measures and using water systems to lower the temperature, but the situation deteriorated again that evening and overnight.

By early Friday morning, officials realized a damaged valve on the compromised tank made it impossible to safely remove or neutralize the chemicals inside.

Authorities warned that if the tank ruptures, it could spill 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals, or explode and trigger fires in nearby tanks containing fuel and other substances.

Sand barriers and containment systems were erected around the facility on Friday in hopes of preventing chemicals from reaching storm drains, river channels and eventually the ocean if the tank bursts.

Drones were also deployed overhead to monitor the tank’s temperature as hazmat crews searched desperately for a solution.

Covey said emergency officials had contacted specialists ‘all over the state and country’ looking for what he described as ‘out of the box’ ideas to prevent disaster.

Some residents described frantically trying to decide what belongings they could carry with them while uncertain whether they would be allowed to return home anytime soon.

Westminster resident Britney Pham told the Orange County Register she struggled to decide whether to bring an urn containing her late sister’s ashes.

‘Should we be getting everything that we think is important, or do we just grab what’s basically essential to live for the next couple of days?’ she said.

The crisis also forced widespread closures across the region.

More than a dozen schools shut down operations while others canceled outdoor activities ‘out of an abundance of caution,’ according to the Garden Grove Unified School District.

Chicago Educators Reject Proposal to Increase Union Dues for Political Funding

CHICAGO (WLS) — Members of the Chicago Teachers Union have recently voted against a proposal to increase their dues.

The union had intended to use the additional funds from higher dues to support various political campaigns.

One such campaign potentially includes backing the CTU’s preferred candidate for the position of Chicago Board of Education president, a role eyed by CTU’s political director, Hilario Dominguez.

Opponents of the proposal advocate for an independent leader for the Chicago Public Schools board.

In a communication sent to its members on Saturday, the union indicated plans to revisit this matter in the upcoming fall season.

“For the past month, our members have engaged in robust debate about a constitutional amendment to make our dues more equitable and fortify our union for the rising costs, fights, and accelerating attacks against public education and workers ahead of us,” the CTU letter read in part. “While not all votes have yet been tabulated, the results seem clear – a majority of CTU members have elected not to implement the proposed dues restructuring at this time. With approximately 80% of schools counted, if current voting trends hold, roughly 60% of members voted against moving forward with this proposal right now.”
