Definitive Ranking of All Blair Witch Movies: Which Spooky Tale Reigns Supreme?

In the cinematic landscape of 1999, a year that heralded the dawn of the new millennium, certain films emerged as game-changers, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Among these was “The Blair Witch Project,” a chilling found footage horror film that not only captivated audiences but also paved the way for an entire subgenre. Its astounding box office success, grossing $248.3 million from a modest $35,000 budget, demonstrated the power of innovative filmmaking. Moreover, it revolutionized viral marketing within the movie industry.

Before its release, audiences could engage with “The Blair Witch Project” through various inventive marketing strategies. These included “missing persons” posters of the film’s fictional documentarians, a detailed website delving into the eerie legend, and a Sci-Fi Channel mockumentary titled “Curse of the Blair Witch.” These tactics blurred the lines between fiction and reality, crafting the illusion that the footage was genuinely discovered in the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland. Given its unique impact, expanding “The Blair Witch Project” into a franchise seemed risky, yet the horror genre’s penchant for sequels ensured its continuation.

Fast forward to April 2026, and another “Blair Witch” installment is in the works, helmed by director Dylan Clark, alongside much of the original creative team. This development invites a reflection on the existing trilogy, evaluating each film’s standing through Rotten Tomatoes ratings, fan feedback, and our own insights.

In 2016, director Adam Wingard attempted to resurrect the franchise with a reboot initially disguised as “The Woods.” The veil was lifted at Comic-Con, revealing it as a direct sequel to the original. “Blair Witch” follows an expedition led by James Donahue (James Allen McCune), who ventures into the ominous Black Forest Hills of Burkittsville, Maryland, after spotting what he believes to be his missing sister Heather—protagonist of the original film—in a YouTube video. Predictably, the forest’s sinister presence soon begins to unravel the sanity of the group.

However, once the initial surprise dissipates, the film reveals itself as a familiar retread, sacrificing suspense for a cacophony of loud, jarring sounds. There are fleeting moments of genuine unease, particularly with the forest’s manipulation of time and perception, but these are overshadowed by a formulaic approach to the found footage genre. The jump scares are predictable, and the slick Hollywood veneer never lets you forget you’re watching a carefully crafted horror film.

3. Blair Witch

  • Cast: James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Corbin Reid
  • Director: Adam Wingard
  • Rating: R
  • Runtime: 89 minutes
  • Where to Watch: HBO Max

Adam Wingard’s 2016 reboot was initially shot and marketed as “The Woods,” only to blow the doors off Comic-Con that year by revealing that it was actually a secret follow-up to “The Blair Witch Project” all along. The plot of “Blair Witch” follows a group expedition that heads into the Black Forest Hills of Burkittsville, Maryland after James Donahue (James Allen McCune) believes he saw his missing sister Heather — from the original movie — lurking in some recently uploaded footage on YouTube. Naturally, it doesn’t take long before the woodland surroundings begin to mess with the curious documentarians to the point of making them lose their minds.

When the surprise factor wears off, what you’re left with is a superficial retread that trades dread for a barrage of (to quote Brick Tamland) loooooud noises. There are moments throughout “Blair Witch” that manage to elicit some creep factor, especially with the idea that the forest can manipulate people’s perception of time and space. But sadly, it’s lost to an obnoxiously predictable found footage movie, with all the jump scare soundcues coming in right on schedule. You’re never not aware that you’re watching a glossy Hollywood horror movie.

It also doesn’t help that the campers are so anonymous not just as characters, but in correlation to each other, that their descent into madness rings completely hollow. A common complaint among the deteractors of the ’99 film is that it’s slow and nothing happens. “Blair Witch” is the movie that seeks to reckon with this half-baked criticism by luring audiences in with cheap tricks that play to the cheap seats, and it sucks.

2. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

  • Cast: Jeffrey Donovan, Erica Leerhsen, Stephen Barker Turner
  • Director: Joe Berlinger
  • Rating: R
  • Runtime: 90 minutes
  • Where to Watch: HBO Max

Artisan Entertainment wanted to immediately capitalize on the overwhelming success of “The Blair Witch Project” by rushing out a sequel the following year without any input from its creative team. What they landed on was “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2,” a meta-sequel that mostly dropped the found footage angle in favor of a more conventionally shot feature that presents itself as a fictionalized version of “actual events.”

The 2000 film picks up in the wake of the first film’s phenomenon and how it transformed Burkittsville into a tourist hotspot, with fans and weirdos alike making life difficult for the locals. Among them is a Blair Witch tour group hoping to capture any kind of supernatural phenomena, only for them to become embroiled in their own loss of memory and reality.

For critics and audiences alike, “Book of Shadows” is understandably considered one of the worst horror sequels ever. It’s a pretty bad movie on account of its terrible performances, incoherent structure, and laughably dated character archetypes. But unlike Adam Wingard’s “Blair Witch,” it actually had the ambition to try something different. The psychological horror movie that director Joe Berlinger set out to make was clearly butchered in the editing room by Artisan, who wanted a more traditional genre outing. You can see glimmers of the movie that could have been in the final edit, even if it would have suffered from a lot of the same problems. Grappling with disturbing thematic material like murder, miscarriage, and fan psychosis doesn’t amount to a whole lot when the film’s presentation of them is incredibly boring.

1. The Blair Witch Project

  • Cast: Rei Hance (formerly Heather Donahue), Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams
  • Directors: Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez
  • Rating: R
  • Runtime: 81 minutes
  • Where to Watch: HBO Max

Countless horror films attempted to recapture what made “The Blair Witch Project” so special, but the truth is that they never could. It’s the perfect marriage of terror, authenticity, and cultural osmosis that hasn’t diminished in the decades since its release. Its brilliance in presenting the horror movie plot of three film students becoming lost in the woods is matched by the catharsis that never arrives. Viewers are left as cold and stranded as Heather, Josh, and Mike, with no one running to provide easy answers as to what’s going on.

While there’s a great deal of fear regarding a potential presence in the woods tormenting them, the film’s greatest terror derives from watching these kids deteriorate before our eyes. Chasing the validity of a local legend sends our trio spiraling in an achingly real paranoia that’s more frightening than the sight of any witch could ever be.

Shot in eight days, “The Blair Witch Project” is one of the best examples of how your entire world can be slowly taken away from you in the blink of an eye without you even realizing it’s happening. The camera is simultaneously a historian, voyeur, and a tool of psychological warfare. The film contains the purest ethos of found footage, considering the fact that we’re seeing this means that everyone involved is predestined to a tragic fate, and it’s stomach-churningly scary. The screams of fear, guilt, and utter hopelessness echo through overwhelming darkness. It’s not one of the best found footage movies ever made, it’s the best found footage film ever made.

Tragic Loss: Red Cross Volunteers Among First Casualties in New Ebola Outbreak

0

IN BRIEF

  • The three volunteers are thought to have contracted the virus during dead body management activities.
  • Bodies of Ebola victims are highly infectious ‌after death.

The Red Cross has shared the tragic news of the loss of three dedicated volunteers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who seemingly succumbed to Ebola while performing their duties earlier this year in March.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently grappling with a severe outbreak of the lethal Ebola virus, a situation so dire that the World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed it an international public health emergency. This designation underscores the global urgency of the crisis.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has confirmed that the fallen volunteers belonged to the DR Congo Red Cross and were stationed in the northeastern province of Ituri, a region at the forefront of this health emergency.

These courageous individuals were serving in Mongbwalu, a town recognized as the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak. The volunteers, Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo, and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane, were engaged in “dead body management activities” on March 27. Unfortunately, it was during this humanitarian mission, not directly linked to Ebola efforts, that they are believed to have contracted the virus, as noted in a statement by the IFRC.

The three staffers, Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane, are believed to have contracted Ebola while carrying out “dead body management activities” on 27 March as part of a humanitarian mission unrelated to Ebola, the IFRC said in a statement.

“At the time of the intervention, the community was not aware of the Ebola virus disease outbreak, and the outbreak had not yet been identified. They are among the first known victims of the outbreak.”

The IFRC said one had died on 5 May and the other two on 15 May and 16.

“These volunteers lost their lives while serving their communities with courage and humanity,” the Geneva-based federation said.

“Their commitment reflects the extraordinary dedication shown every day by Red Cross volunteers working in complex and high-risk environments.”

Bodies of Ebola victims are highly infectious ‌after death, and unsafe burials — where family members handle the body without proper protective equipment — are a leading driver of transmission.

Window for action ‘narrow’

The IFRC, which has more than 17 million volunteers in more than 191 countries, is the world’s largest humanitarian network.

It said it remained committed to supporting communities affected by Ebola and to strengthening efforts to respond to the outbreak.

There are 82 confirmed cases and seven confirmed deaths in the DR Congo, with almost 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths, the WHO said on Friday.

The outbreak, which experts suspect was circulating under the radar for some time, is due to the less common Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments.

The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for 29 million Swiss francs (A$51.7 million).

Gabriela Arenas, the IFRC’s Africa regional operations coordinator, said that in Mongbwalu, volunteers were knocking on doors, advising communities on how to protect themselves.

“Community reactions remain mixed,” she told reporters in Geneva on Friday, speaking from Nairobi.

“For some people, the outbreak is very real, and they are seeking information on how to protect themselves and their families. For others, there is still suspicion and misinformation with claims that Ebola is fabricated.”

She said that during an Ebola outbreak, trust and community acceptance could mean the difference between containment and wider transmission.

“This outbreak can still be contained, but the window for action is narrow. What happens in the coming days — in homes, in communities and across borders — will matter enormously,” she said.

Shocking Arrest: New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo Detained in Clark County, Ohio

The police chief of a town in Lake County, Indiana, has found himself in legal trouble after being arrested in Ohio, according to official reports.

Earl Mayo, the Police Chief of New Chicago, Indiana, was detained on Friday in Clark County, Ohio.

The arrest was confirmed on Saturday by Mayo’s father, Major Jerry Williams of the Indiana State Police, who is also a candidate for the position of Lake County Sheriff.

Records indicate that Mayo is currently being held at the Clark County Jail in Ohio.

In addition, authorities have conducted a search of Mayo’s residence in Merrillville, Indiana.

No further information was immediately available about Mayo’s arrest nor the investigation at his home.

ABC7 has reached out to New Chicago city officials for more information.

Williams released the following statement Saturday:
“My wife and I and our family are deeply concerned over recent information regarding our son, Earl Mayo, chief of the New Chicago Police Department. We raised all of our children with love, guidance and a strong foundation of values. We’ve always held our children to higher standards, as we have ourselves.

“We have very little information about this incident at this time. We are aware there are allegations that are troubling, and we struggle to reconcile them with the values we worked so hard to instill in all of our children and grandchildren.

“Under our criminal justice system, Earl is presumed innocent unless and until proven otherwise. We respect that fundamental principle, and it is important that the legal process be allowed to proceed fairly and impartially.

“If it is ultimately established that Earl engaged in the conduct alleged by the government, then he must and should accept responsibility for his actions and face the consequences.

“This is an extremely difficult and emotional time for our family. Given the seriousness of this matter and the ongoing legal proceedings, we cannot comment any further on the undisclosed details of this situation.”

28 Boy Scouts Successfully Rescued from Rapid Floodwaters During West Virginia River Expedition

0

A routine Boy Scout river trip in West Virginia took a dramatic turn on Saturday, evolving into an unexpected rescue operation when swift floodwaters trapped 28 scouts. The scouts, hailing from Fairfax, Virginia, were navigating the Cacapon River in Hampshire County when the water’s rapid rise forced them to seek refuge on the riverbank.

As the scouts attempted to reach safety, they found themselves stranded on the river’s opposite side, cut off by the surging waters. Micah Campbell, accompanying the group, shared with Fox News Digital that the troop’s simple outing was quickly disrupted by the storm’s aftermath, which escalated the river’s intensity beyond anticipation.

What began as a planned adventure soon turned into a precarious situation as the scouts were caught off guard by nature’s sudden fury. The incident highlights the unpredictable challenges that can arise in outdoor pursuits, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and quick thinking in unforeseen circumstances.

In a related note of cautionary tales, a Texas girl was recently rescued after a sand hole she was digging collapsed, burying her. These incidents remind us of the inherent risks in seemingly ordinary activities and the vigilance required to ensure safety.

“We were doing a river trip and the current and the strength of the river turned out to be a little stronger than we thought,” Campbell said.

Campbell said the scouts initially moved toward land for safety before realizing they were stranded.

“When some of the boys went into the river, we decided to call it off and go on shore,” he said. “And now we were on the wrong side of the river, so we needed some help getting across.”

Jeffrey West, whose father owns a cabin near where the scouts became stranded, said rescue crews were called to the scene.

Watercraft eventually arrived and transported the boys safely across the river.

Altogether, the scouts were stranded for roughly 45 minutes.

“It’s been a day,” West said with a laugh, adding that he had originally planned a “quiet weekend at the cabin.”

Johnny Manziel Stuns Fans with Knockout Victory Over Social Media Influencer in Epic MMA Debut

0

On Saturday, Johnny Manziel stepped into the amateur MMA ring for the first time at Brand Risk 14, swiftly overcoming social media personality Bob Menery in a 205-pound match at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

During the initial moments of the fight, Menery approached with little defense and was quickly taken down. Manziel, known for his past as an NFL quarterback and as the 2012 Heisman Trophy recipient, seized the opportunity to mount his opponent, unleashing a barrage of elbows and punches that forced the fight to be halted at 2:15 of the first round.

Following his swift victory, Manziel expressed his respect for Menery, stating, “Respected you for getting in here. Much love, brother,” as he was presented with an honorary “W U” belt.

Both fighters confirmed they don’t plan to step into the ring again anytime soon. Menery humorously added, “Not after that display,” when questioned about a potential rematch.

This influencer-centric event, initially planned for Miami but relocated to Las Vegas after UFC CEO Dana White gave his approval, attracted an elite audience. Among them were music superstar Chris Brown, Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive end Maxx Crosby, and UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland.

White previously helped generate buzz by publicly doubting the fight would even happen, stating he placed a $10,000 bet that the notoriously unpredictable Menery would no-show.

Saturday’s 11-fight card — with an MMA main card after a boxing prelim card — was the first Brand Risk event held outside Miami or Nashville since its inception.

California Declares State of Emergency Due to Imminent Chemical Tank Explosion Threat

0

Governor Gavin Newsom of California has issued a state of emergency for Orange County due to the imminent threat posed by a large chemical tank that could potentially “spill or explode.”

Over 40,000 people were forced to evacuate on Saturday after attempts to stabilize the 34,000-gallon tank at a GKN Aerospace site in Garden Grove proved unsuccessful.

The tank holds methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly flammable substance that authorities are concerned might leak or detonate, potentially setting off a hazardous chain reaction with other nearby chemical containers.

“Ensuring the safety of Orange County residents is our top priority,” Newsom emphasized in a public statement.

“We are deploying all available state resources to assist local emergency teams and ensure the community has everything necessary to remain safe,” he added.

If the problem cannot be secured, officials said an explosion could damage adjacent buildings, start a fire or dump 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of ‘very bad chemicals.’

‘California’s Office of Emergency Services continues to work alongside our local partners to support the ongoing hazardous materials response operation,’ said Director Caroline Thomas Jacobs in the joint statement.

‘Our role is to coordinate resources, share critical information, and ensure local responders have all the resources necessary to safely respond to this dynamic situation.

‘We are committed to a unified, whole-of-government response focused on keeping our communities safe.’

Firefighters first responded on Thursday after vapors began escaping from the massive storage tank at the company’s Garden Grove facility.

Officials said the tank’s temperature had increased, activating a relief valve designed to release pressure safely.

At first, crews believed they had stabilized the emergency after deploying cooling measures and using water systems to reduce the tank’s temperature.

Evacuation orders issued on Thursday evening were briefly lifted after vapor conditions improved, but the situation dramatically deteriorated again overnight.

Multiple evacuation locations were set up outside the Garden Grove area, including Anaheim and Huntington Beach, according to the city website.

Approximately 15 percent of people ordered to evacuate opted to stay home, reported the New York Post.

It is unclear when evacuated residents may be able to return to their homes.

By early Friday morning, officials realized a damaged valve on the compromised tank had made it impossible to safely remove or neutralize the chemicals inside.

‘We have determined that the tank that is in the biggest crisis is, in fact, unable to be secured and mitigated,’ Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey warned during a tense emergency briefing.

‘This thing is going to fail. We don’t know when,’ he added. ‘There is a lot of anxiety over this.’

The Orange County Fire Authority worked overnight Friday in an attempt to neutralize adjacent tanks in an effort to mitigate the threats of a major disaster.

Orange County Representative Derek Tran said at a press conference on Saturday that the adjacent tanks were under careful watch because they contained the same toxic chemicals.

‘The additional part to all of this that complicates things is the two other tanks that are located in there,’ he said. ‘While those tanks are not failing, they contain 30-something thousand additional gallons of the same toxic chemicals.’

But the emergency proclamation stated that despite efforts to quell the problem ‘significant risk remains of a catastrophic event that could lead to a hazardous release of dangerous chemicals.’

Tran said crews are working 24 hours a day to address the issue.

Failures with the internal temperature gauge of the primary tank caused it to climb to 90 degrees on Saturday morning, after reading 77 degrees the day before, according to Fox Digital.

‘Yesterday afternoon, I did report that we had some positive intel and that the tanks were stable, and we were keeping the temperature cool,’ Covey said. ‘And, actually, we thought we were reducing it a little bit.’

‘Unfortunately, I have to say those temperatures we are doing is via drone, doing readings external of the vessel.’

After the failure of overnight procedures, officials developed a third outcome that could circumvent disaster.

Crews planned to use a continuous heavy stream of water to slowly ‘cure’ and harden the dangerous chemicals in the affected tank from the outside.

‘We are not giving up,’ he said. ‘We are not accepting the fact that we just have to let this thing fail. We’re going to try to find a solution.’

Responders have also coordinated efforts to divert the dangerous chemicals from entering storm drains, rivers and the ocean.

Health officials have said there are ‘severe risks’ if the affected tank ruptures, including the release of a toxic vapor.

Dr Regina Chinsio-Kwong of the Orange County Health Care Agency told Fox that if inhaled, the chemicals could cause severe respiratory issues.

‘No matter what happens with the situation, whether the polymer just leaks out and then just hardens, or if it does explode and there is a vapor, you are all safe as long as you are out of the zone,’ she said.

The Daily Mail contacted the Governor’s Office, GKN Aerospace, Garden Grove and Orange County Fire Authority Division for comment.
