Tragic NYC Shipyard Explosion: 1 Dead, 36 Injured in Devastating Blast, Officials Confirm

0

Tragedy struck a New York City shipyard on Staten Island, N.Y. on Friday, as a fire and a series of explosions led to the death of one individual and injured numerous others. The chaotic scene unfolded with alarming speed, leaving emergency responders grappling with the rapidly deteriorating situation.

The incident resulted in injuries to 36 people, the majority of whom were firefighters and first responders bravely tackling the blaze. Sadly, one civilian lost their life at the scene, underscoring the perilous nature of the emergency.

A particularly harrowing moment occurred when a firefighter and a fire marshal found themselves inside the structure during a second explosion. The powerful shock wave inflicted serious injuries upon both, demonstrating the unpredictable dangers that emergency personnel face in the line of duty.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the media at a news conference on Friday evening, describing the events as “a complex, fast-developing emergency situation.” His remarks highlighted the challenges faced by responders in managing such a volatile and life-threatening incident.

“This was a complex, fast-developing emergency situation,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a news conference Friday evening.

Multiple people called the fire department around 3:30 p.m., reporting smoke and two workers trapped in the basement of a 150-foot by 150-foot metal structure at the back of the shipyard, said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore.

Firefighting and EMS crews were on the scene within six minutes. But shortly after they arrived, an explosion occurred, causing serious injuries to multiple fire department members and a couple of civilians, Bonsignore said — including one who died at the scene.

Five firefighters and rescue paramedics were searching for the trapped workers inside, on top of and next to the structure when the second blast occurred, said Chief of Department John Esposito, causing more injuries.

The most serious injuries happened to a fire marshal and a firefighter who were inside and hit by the energy wave from the blast.

“Confined spaces are very dangerous operations for any rescuers,” Esposito said.

The fire marshal is in critical condition but is stable with a fractured skull and a small brain bleed, said the fire department’s chief medical officer Dr. David Prezant.

“We will be watching him very carefully over the next 24 hours to make certain there is not subsequent brain swelling. As long as there is not, he should do well,” Prezant said.

The firefighter was in serious condition when he arrived at the hospital. But Prezant said he was doing “very well” by Friday evening, and he was being observed to ensure he doesn’t have muscle injuries.

The fire was still burning but under control Friday night, with more than 200 firefighters still at the scene, Mamdani said. A comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire will begin as soon as possible, he said.

Richard Oviogor, who was in the area, told WABC-TV that he heard two explosions and what seemed like a “big shock wave.”

The area is home to several businesses, including a coffee roasting company and a self-storage facility. The shipyard used to be owned by the Bethlehem Steel Company, which built ships for the U.S. Navy during World War II.

UC Davis Fraternity Student’s 2001 Death Re-evaluated as Suicide Following True Crime Podcast’s Scrutiny of 29 Stab Wounds

0

Two and a half decades have passed since the tragic discovery of a University of California, Davis student who was found deceased with 29 stab wounds in his fraternity dorm room—an incident officially deemed a suicide. The case of Andrew Wieman is now being revisited by a new true crime podcast, aiming to explore the lingering questions that Wieman’s family maintains remain unanswered.

Andrew Wieman, a 20-year-old junior who belonged to the Kappa Sigma fraternity, was discovered dead in his locked room on January 4, 2001.

Following a comprehensive 13-month investigation by UC Davis Police, the Yolo County Coroner’s Office, and the California Department of Justice, authorities concluded that Wieman’s death was a suicide.

Investigators cited several pieces of evidence supporting their conclusion: a handwritten note found in Wieman’s room, the knife that inflicted the wounds was his and bore his fingerprints, and there were no signs of forced entry or a struggle within the room.

Officials also noted Wieman’s room was locked, the windows were secured, and all keys were accounted for. According to investigators, there were no defensive wounds on Wieman’s body and no evidence another person had been present in the room.

In a statement released at the time, UC Davis Police Chief Calvin Handy described Wieman as a “troubled individual” and said investigators believed the evidence, taken “in totality,” was most consistent with suicide.

But Wieman’s family has never accepted the official ruling. For years, they have continued pushing for answers, raising concerns about whether all aspects of the case were fully examined.

Now, Emmy Award-winning producer Kyle Olson is revisiting the case in Season 2 of the true crime podcast “Love & Justice,” which premieres May 26.

Olson said his team was immediately struck by several details in the case when they began reviewing investigative files and evidence.

“When you start to piece all these things together, and then you hear the determination is suicide, it’s inherently something that brings curiosity,” Olson told Fox News Digital.

Olson said the case stood out because of several details investigators acknowledged at the time, including that Wieman suffered 29 stab wounds, several of them fatal, had no drugs or alcohol in his system, and was found inside a locked room.

“Those are all things that make you scratch your head,” Olson said. “That’s not something we normally see in a case like this.”

The podcast host said another detail that surprised his team was learning Wieman was allegedly found “tucked into bed” and wearing earplugs — details Olson said were not widely discussed publicly at the time.

“What does it mean?” Olson said. “Does it mean something, or is it just a small tiny detail in a much bigger story?”

The series also explores a roughly 60-hour gap between the last confirmed sighting of Wieman in the early hours of Jan. 2, and when he was ultimately found dead.

“Sixty hours is a very long time,” Olson said. “What was going on during those 60 hours, and does somebody know something that perhaps they haven’t shared in 25 years?”

According to Olson, the podcast does not attempt to force a predetermined conclusion, but instead re-examines the case using modern forensic reconstruction technology and fresh expert analysis.

“We’re interested in hearing from all sides,” Olson said. “There’s going to be some people that think maybe, with the evidence that we’ve seen, it could lead to suicide. There’s going to be others that say, ‘I disagree.’”

Olson said the investigation has involved forensic experts from around the world and focuses heavily on whether advancements in science and reconstruction technology can better explain the circumstances surrounding Wieman’s death.

“One of the biggest questions for me always comes back to feasibility,” Olson said. “Is it possible that someone can inflict 29 stab wounds to themselves, especially when multiple of those stab wounds are fatal?”

Olson said the passage of time could also play an important role in generating new information.

“There may be people that were too shy to bring up information 25 years ago that are willing to talk now,” Olson said. “Now might be the time to say something.”

Season 1 of “Love & Justice” focused on the murder of Olson’s childhood friend, Ashley Love, whose killer has never been found.

Bianca Wallace and Ioan Gruffudd Celebrate Arrival of Their First Child Amidst Ongoing Legal Drama with Alice Evans

Bianca Wallace joyfully announced the arrival of her first child with husband Ioan Gruffudd via Instagram on Thursday.

The 33-year-old actress shared the delightful update with her 19.4 thousand followers, expressing that both she and the 52-year-old Marvel actor are “completely smitten.”

Bianca posted a tender photo of the couple sharing a kiss in the hospital, along with an artistic rainbow print of her baby’s umbilical cord.

The couple, who began their public relationship in 2021 and got engaged three years later, also shared the charming name of their daughter and noted that Bianca gave birth on November 2.

In her post, she wrote: “November was a milestone… Name: Mila Mae Gruffudd. Birth date: November 2, 2025. Due date: December 2, 2025.”

‘Bubba Bear and Rocky: Absolutely smitten. Daddy & Mummy: Completely and totally in love with our tiny little angel. Extremely grateful this thanksgiving.’

Ioan is already a proud dad to two children, Ella, 15, and Elsie, 11 with ex-wife Alice Evans, who he divorced over two years ago.

Ioan and Alice officially ended their marriage after a bitter court battle and vicious custody row over their daughters.

Hollywood star Ioan also obtained a restraining order in 2022 against Alice.

He blasted Alice for allegedly getting Ella to file her own restraining order against him – and for stopping their two daughters from going to therapy.

The post came weeks after Bianca insisted she never had an affair with Ioan as she accused his ex Alice of fabricating the ‘disgusting, vile story’.

The former couple are currently in a bitter legal battle and Alice, 56, accused her ex of cheating on her for three years with Bianca, who is 18 years his junior.

Bianca recently responded to the accusations as she revealed she did not have an affair with Ioan after receiving threats towards her unborn baby from trolls.

Taking to Instagram with a screenshot of some of the hate she has received, Bianca called the affair accusations ‘pathetic’ and ‘utterly ridiculous’.

She penned: ‘I have ignored this truly pathetic narrative for nearly 4 years now because of how utterly ridiculous and clearly insane it is.

‘But threaten my innocent, unborn baby and the time for ignoring is up! Absolutely no one will ever threaten my baby over a made up story about an affair that literally never happened! No way.’

Since Ioan and Bianca went public with their relationship, Alice has openly hit out at their relationship on social media and claimed the pair had been embroiled in a three-year affair.

Back in 2022 Bianca posted a snap of her and Ioan holding hands which Alice branded ‘sick’ and ‘evil’ and claimed seeing the image was like a ‘stake in the heart’.

Responding to Alice’s claims directly in her post, Bianca continued: ‘In October 2021 my husband’s ex made up a disgusting, vile story about my husband and I having an affair.

‘For 3 years and 9 months the narrative as been ongoing, making people like “rivqah2020” message me, and now my unborn baby, threats like this.

‘The TRUTH has been set in black and white, in clear evidence, under oath numerous times, and all available in public record.’

She added: ‘I will not have my innocent baby born into this completely intentional manufactured drama. This has all got to end now, and it needs to end with the truth and facts.

‘My husband and I haven’t deserved one second of this, and now, our unborn baby is being threatened and attacked. Absolutely no f*****g way!

‘I know that I speak for so many people out there who have lived through this kind of abuse, lies and manipulation when I say we are all sick and tired of the b******t now.’

New Details Emerge on Maldives Diving Tragedy as Divers Near Surface

0

Five Italian divers tragically lost their lives in the Maldives due to inadequate scuba gear, according to reports. The group was just 15 minutes away from reaching the surface when they met with disaster.

Finnish diver Sami Paakkarinen described the incident as a “tragic human error” which led to the May 14 accident, resulting in the fatalities at a depth of 200 feet. He shared these insights with The Sun, highlighting the crucial mistakes that contributed to the tragedy.

Paakkarinen noted that four of the divers’ bodies were discovered together, indicating they had been close to one another at the time of the incident.

“In many cave diving accidents, human error often plays a significant role,” he explained, emphasizing a common thread in such tragedies.

He further observed that the divers lacked essential cave diving equipment, such as a diving reel or guide rope, which are vital for ensuring safety in such challenging underwater environments.

In general, for those who visit caves, it’s known that it’s not very wise to do so without a safety line,” Paakarinen said.

This is a developing story. Please check back for more updates.

Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About Financial Struggles at Home Despite $43M Earnings in 2025

Scarlett Johansson has recently opened up about the elusive concept of achieving a perfect work-life balance, admitting that it’s more of a myth than a reality.

In a candid conversation with CBS Sunday Morning, Johansson revealed that, despite her significant career achievements, she often finds herself grappling with a persistent “deficit” in one area of her life or another.

“I believe the first step toward a semblance of balance is acknowledging that a perfect work-life harmony simply doesn’t exist,” the acclaimed Marvel actress expressed.

She continued, “There’s always something lacking somewhere, and I’ve learned to be kinder to myself. It’s impossible to juggle everything at once, so the real question becomes, is what you’re doing good enough?”

As time has passed, Johansson has come to terms with the fact that not every aspect of her life will be flawless.

Johansson is currently balancing a marriage with comedian Colin Jost and raising their two kids, launching a skincare brand and taking on acting roles.

According to Forbes, Johansson earned $43 million in 2025 and was named the highest-paid actress of 2025.

Her view of success has shifted in recent years.

“Somebody once told me, ‘If you’re successful as a parent like 75% of the time, that’s good’ — if you’re doing 75% of it like right, then you’re winning, which is probably true,” Johansson told “CBS Sunday Morning.”

Johansson and Jost, a comedian and writer best known for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” tied the knot in October 2020. In August 2021, the couple welcomed their first son, Cosmo.

The Marvel actress was previously married to actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011 and French journalist Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017. Dauriac and Johansson share an 11-year-old daughter, Rose. This is Jost’s first marriage.

The “Black Widow” star came from humble beginnings. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2017, she admitted that her family of six was on welfare.

“We were living on welfare, we were on food stamps. My parents were raising four kids in a low-income household in Manhattan. So, it was a lot,” Johansson said at the time.

Johansson skyrocketed to fame in the early 2000s. During an interview with People in April, the actress opened up about the difficulties of entering the spotlight at a young age.

“I think growing up in the entertainment industry and being 20-something years old in the early 2000s, being a 20-year-old woman in the early 2000s in the spotlight, I think in general it was just a really harsh time,” Johansson began.

“I think women were just pulled apart for how they looked in a way that was socially acceptable at the time, and it was tough,” she continued.

“There was a lot placed on how women looked and what was offered at that time for women my age as far as acting roles or opportunities, it was much slimmer than it is now.”

Unveiling the Truth: The Real Cost of Passing Away in Australia

0

IN BRIEF

  • Australia currently has no formal death duties, but taxes can still apply through super and family trusts.
  • Under the government’s reforms, some new discretionary trusts would face a minimum 30 per cent tax rate from 2028.

The term “death tax” has resurfaced in Australian political discourse, sparking debate over whether the government’s recent tax proposals truly warrant this label, depending on one’s perspective.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has consistently maintained that the federal budget, unveiled earlier this month, does not include any inheritance taxes or death duties.

Chalmers has countered the Opposition’s assertions that the suggested trust reforms equate to a “death tax.” He emphasized that the federal budget does not introduce inheritance taxes or death duties.

According to Chalmers, the proposed changes will keep deceased estates, fixed trusts, and existing testamentary discretionary trusts exempt. He argues that the focus is on curbing tax minimization strategies rather than targeting inherited wealth.

The treasurer also highlighted that families wishing to avoid the proposed minimum 30 percent tax rate on certain discretionary trust structures can still establish fixed testamentary trusts through wills.

As political backlash intensified following the budget, Chalmers accused opponents of running a “scare campaign” over the reforms, maintaining the government had been transparent about the measures from the outset.

But Opposition leader Angus Taylor disagrees, accusing the government of introducing a “death tax by stealth” through changes to discretionary trusts.

The clash has reignited a politically potent debate Australia has not seriously grappled with in decades: what should happen, tax-wise, when wealth passes from one generation to the next?

Stephen Bartos, economics professor at the University of Canberra, said the reforms cannot be considered an inheritance tax because the proposed changes would only apply to a particular trust tax structure.

“What the changes mean in essence is that in the future, people will not be able to set up a trust in a fashion that allows income splitting and, therefore, allows taxes to be avoided,” he said.

“So it doesn’t apply retrospectively, it is a change that will apply for the future, and it is to essentially close that loophole,” he said.

The trust loophole at the centre of the debate

At the centre of the argument are Labor’s proposed changes to trust taxation.

Under the reforms, some new discretionary trusts would face a minimum 30 per cent tax rate from 2028, reducing the ability for families to distribute trust income to beneficiaries on lower marginal tax rates.

Labor argues the policy is designed to close tax minimisation loopholes disproportionately used by wealthy Australians. The government has stressed the changes do not impose a direct tax on estates or inheritances, and that existing testamentary trusts, deceased estates and fixed trusts would remain exempt.

But the Opposition has focused on a different argument: that some families inheriting wealth through these structures could ultimately end up paying more tax due to a death.

That distinction has become arguably the most contentious point.

Technically, Australia still does not have a formal inheritance tax or estate duty. Beneficiaries are not taxed simply for receiving money or assets from a deceased estate, and death duties were abolished nationwide by the end of the 1970s.

Yet tax experts say the reality is more complicated than the political slogans suggest.

Several taxes can already arise after death, particularly through superannuation, capital gains and trust structures. While inherited assets are usually transferred tax-free initially, beneficiaries may later face tax on income generated from those assets, or capital gains tax if assets are sold.

Taxes on superannuation death benefits are thought to not be well understood.

Super paid to a spouse or financial dependent is generally tax-free, but adult children inheriting super balances can face tax on parts of those payments depending on how the account is structured.

Matthew Burgess, founder of specialist law firm View Legal, told SBS News that most Australians are generally unaware that taxes can still arise after death through things like superannuation, capital gains or trust structures.

Bartos said discretionary testamentary trusts are used by only a small number of Australians, and families are not required to use them when planning inheritances.

He argued that if people decide to use different estate structures because of the proposed changes, the reforms may end up raising little or no additional revenue at all.

Concerns driving political backlash

Mounting political pressure has already forced the government to slow the rollout of the controversial trust reforms, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signalling the legislation will take longer to develop than other budget measures.

The government maintains the policy is aimed at limiting the use of discretionary trusts as tax minimisation vehicles, where high-income earners distribute income to lower-income family members to reduce overall tax liabilities.

But opponents say the reforms risk sweeping up families using testamentary trusts for legitimate succession planning purposes, including protecting assets for children or vulnerable beneficiaries.

“If people want to do that, they can do so through a fixed trust where the person who is leaving the money designates in advance where they want it to go,” Bartos said.

The political sensitivity surrounding the proposal reflects how quickly the debate has expanded beyond technical tax law into broader anxieties about inheritance, family wealth and financial security.

Bella Hadid Stuns in Swimsuit Following Thrilling Yacht Adventure

Bella Hadid found herself unwinding on a lavish yacht along the French Riviera on Friday afternoon, mere days after her heart-stopping leap from a yacht.

The 29-year-old supermodel showcased her stunning figure in a daring white swimsuit, sharing snapshots on her Instagram Story.

Displaying her sculpted physique and flat stomach, Hadid enjoyed pouring champagne for her friends aboard the opulent boat.

She was also spotted admiring the breathtaking ocean vistas through binoculars, her blonde locks neatly tucked under a crochet bandana.

Hadid completed her revealing ensemble with an abundance of gold jewelry and oversized sunglasses, adding a touch of glamour to her look.

She was joined by celebrity stylist Mimi Cuttrell and Fanny Bourdette-Donon, the director of global communications for Augustinus Bader.

She reposted Donon’s photo of her showing off her backside in her swimsuit to her own Instagram story and referenced a Superman quote to go with her pose.

Alongside the snapshot of her leaning over the railing and pointing up at the sky, Hadid wrote: ‘a bird…. a plane… a train?’

Hadid has been in France for over a week attending the star-studded Cannes Film Festival.

Just two days ago, Hadid turned heads on the red carpet in a custom lace gown by Schiaparelli inspired by late Hollywood film icon Jane Birkin at the premiere of De Gaulle: Tilting Iron.

Birkin, the fabled Anglo-French actress and singer who inspired the Hermes bag and died in 2023 aged 76, famously wore a near-identical Pucci gown at the Cannes festival six decades earlier.

Birkin was just 22 at the time when she walked the red carpet with her much-older musician boyfriend Serge Gainsbourg.

The white crochet dress by Pucci went on to become one of her most iconic looks.

Hadid styled her hair in a glamorous updo accessorized with gobstopper diamond earrings by Chopard.

Hadid’s look was the result of hours of meticulous planning — 22,160 hours, to be precise, according to a press release issued by Schiaparelli.

Hadid also attended the Cannes premiere of Garance as well as the starry Chopard Gala with her model mother Yolanda Hadid, 62.

When she wasn’t walking the Cannes red carpet, Hadid was getting in some much needed TLC at various French eateries as well as aboard the ‘Seven Sins’ superyacht.

On Wednesday, Hadid’s relaxing yacht day took a scary turn when she jumped into the ocean from the vessel’s top deck, which was approximately 50 feet high, as per photos obtained by the Daily Mail.

Unlocking the Secrets of Cannes Film Festival’s Glamorous Dress Code: Fashion Rules Revealed!

The curtain is set to fall on the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

As the event wraps up on May 23 after a vibrant two-week celebration, it wasn’t just the films that stole the spotlight. Attendees were equally captivated by the fashion statements made on the red carpet, where celebrities showcased their unique flair and elegance.

Consider John Travolta, for example. The star of Grease garnered attention with his collection of berets, a nod to his first venture into directing with Propeller One-Way Night Coach.

“Having spent over five decades in the film industry, the past events blur together,” Travolta shared with CNN. “But this time, as a director, I embraced the role. I told myself, ‘You’re a director now. Step into that persona.'”

And so, he embarked on a bit of research.

“I looked up pictures—20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s—and the old school directors wore berets and the glasses,” the Saturday Night Fever star continued. “And I thought, ‘That’s what I’m doing. I’m gonna do an homage to being a director.’”

Verydarkman Criticizes Political Landscape in Rivers State Following APC Primary Results

  • VeryDarkMan, a social media commentator, expressed concerns about Kingsley Chinda winning the APC governorship primary in Rivers State.
  • He shared a video on Instagram revisiting past allegations from 2024 involving Chinda and former governor Nyesom Wike.
  • The allegations pertain to a controversial land allocation in Abuja, raising issues about political power and influence.

Social media analyst VeryDarkMan has expressed serious concerns after Kingsley Chinda emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Rivers State.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, the activist revisited accusations he made in 2024, involving Chinda and former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, concerning a controversial land allocation in Abuja. He suggested that the incident highlighted issues surrounding the misuse of political power and influence.

VeryDarkMan alleged that the land in question initially belonged to private citizens before it was purportedly seized and reassigned. He claims that this prime piece of property could potentially be sold for a significant profit.

He contended that the political landscape in Rivers State seems to be dominated by influential figures operating behind the scenes, aiming to retain their hold on the state’s leadership.

“This is the same Kingsley Chinda I talked about in 2024 regarding the Abuja land matter,” he said. “The land was allegedly taken from the original owners who had documents and later allocated to him because of how valuable the area could become in the future.”

The activist also alleged that former governor Wike fell out with the current Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, because Fubara allegedly refused to operate under external influence, which contributed to the political crisis in the state.

VeryDarkMan further criticized President Bola Tinubu, blaming his administration for the country’s current political and governance challenges.

His comments have since generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the allegations, the APC primary election, and the ongoing political situation in Rivers State.

Prominent Figures Emerge as Murdaugh Double-Murder Case Takes a Surprising Turn

0

The saga of the Murdaugh family, a tale that reads more like fiction than reality, is set to continue its dramatic journey in the courtroom. The Southern legal dynasty, which has been brought down by a harrowing combination of double murder and extensive financial fraud, will face a new chapter as it heads back to trial.

Alex Murdaugh, once a powerful attorney in South Carolina whose family wielded significant influence in courtrooms for generations, was convicted in 2023 of the murders of his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, and their younger son, Paul Murdaugh. The tragic events unfolded at the family’s Moselle hunting estate in June 2021, casting a long shadow over the prominent family.

However, on May 13, the state Supreme Court made a decisive move by unanimously overturning these convictions. The court found that former Colleton County Clerk of Court, Rebecca “Becky” Hill, had improperly swayed the jury, thus compromising the trial’s integrity.

As the stage is set for a second trial, several key figures are poised to play crucial roles in this unfolding legal drama.

1. Alex Murdaugh:

Before the murders, Murdaugh was part of a legal dynasty in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather served as elected prosecutors in the region for more than 80 years, while the family law firm was a legal powerhouse.

At his 2021 murder trial, prosecutors argued that Murdaugh killed his wife Maggie and son Paul as his financial crimes were closing in, hoping the killings would generate sympathy and buy time from his impending money troubles.

While Murdaugh has admitted to stealing money and committing insurance fraud, he has denied the murders.

ALEX MURDAUGH, ACCOMPLICE ORDERED TO PAY MILLIONS IN MONEY SCHEME AFTER HOUSEKEEPER’S DEATH

In 2023, he was convicted after a six-week trial and sentenced to consecutive life terms without parole. But the convictions were recently overturned, leading to the legal scion’s return to court.

He remains behind bars on state and federal financial-crimes sentences tied to stealing roughly $12 million from clients.

2. Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh

Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, 52, was Alex Murdaugh’s wife and one of the two victims found dead near the dog kennels at Moselle on June 7, 2021.

Maggie and Alex were married at the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Aug. 14, 1993.

Maggie was shot four or five times with a rifle, while Paul was shot twice with a shotgun.

In a retrial, Maggie’s death will again be central to the state’s burden. Prosecutors must prove who killed her and Paul, beyond a reasonable doubt, without the benefit of the now-vacated 2023 verdict.

3. Paul Murdaugh

Paul Murdaugh, 22, was Alex and Maggie Murdaugh’s younger son and the second murder victim. Long before his death, Paul was already a controversial figure because of the 2019 boat crash that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach.

At the murder trial, Paul became crucial in another way: his cellphone video from the kennels. The state’s case relied heavily on evidence placing Alex Murdaugh at the murder scene shortly before the killings.

In a Fox Nation series “The Fall of the House of Murdaugh,” Buster spoke candidly about his father and his murder trial during an exclusive sit-down interview conducted by Fox News’ Martha MacCallum.

“I do not think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother,” he said. “We have been here for a while now and that’s been my stance.”

5. Dick Harpootlian:

Since the conclusion of the first trial, Harpootlian’s message has been that the first trial was tainted by Hill’s misconduct and that the second trial must be carried out under stricter rules.

Harpootlian, one of Murdaugh’s lead defense attorneys, has already previewed a retrial strategy that includes seeking a venue change, attorney-led jury questioning and possibly sequestering jurors.

6. Jim Griffin:

Jim Griffin, another Murdaugh defense attorney, has been central not only to the appeal but also to Murdaugh’s civil lawsuit against Hill.

After the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed Murdaugh’s convictions, Griffin helped announce a lawsuit against Hill. The suit accuses the former clerk of violating Murdaugh’s right to a fair trial and seeks punitive and compensatory damages, as well as $600,000 of attorneys’ fees.

Griffin said the lawsuit was meant to hold Hill accountable and reveal the “entire scope of her conduct.”

7. Creighton Waters:

Creighton Waters is the prosecutor who secured the original guilty verdicts. Now he faces the job of trying to win the case a second time, under a microscope, after the first conviction was blown up.

Waters and Harpootlian have already previewed competing visions for the retrial, with Waters signaling an impending fight over whether Murdaugh can receive a fair jury in South Carolina.

“We depend on our citizens to do what their oath requires them, put aside things that they might have read in the media or in a podcast or whatever, and base their evidence and their decisions solely on the evidence that’s presented in the courtroom,” Waters told Fox News Digital.

8. Alan Wilson:

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said prosecutors could seek the death penalty if Murdaugh is convicted again.

“We’re back to square one on this case,” Wilson said in a statement to Fox News Digital, adding that all legal options were on the table, including the death penalty.

In the first trial, Murdaugh received life without parole. A retrial could, in theory, expose him to something more severe if prosecutors pursue capital punishment and meet the legal requirements.

According to testimony reviewed by the court, jurors said Hill told them to “watch him closely,” “watch his actions” and not be “fooled” by the defense.

The court’s ruling also referenced findings that Hill was drawn by the “siren call of celebrity” and allowed public attention to overcome her duty.

Hill co-authored a book about the proceedings, “Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders,” which the lawsuit says earned roughly $100,000 before being withdrawn amid plagiarism allegations.

According to the book’s synopsis, Hill had known the Murdaugh family for decades and was aware of “the rumors of corruption and crime surrounding the Murdaugh family.”

The state’s Supreme Court said Hill “egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility” by suggesting to jurors that he was guilty and that his testimony could not be trusted. Hill later pleaded guilty to lying about what she said and did during the trial, including showing graphic crime-scene photos to media members.

Hill had previously pleaded guilty to four charges — obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits and then lying about it, plus two counts of misconduct in office for taking bonuses and promoting a book she wrote on the trial through her public office.

“There is no excuse for the mistakes I made. I’m ashamed of them and will carry that shame the rest of my life,” Hill said in a statement read to the court.

10. Mallory Beach:

Beach, 19, died in a 2019 boat crash involving Paul Murdaugh. The crash and ensuing litigation helped drag the Murdaugh family’s power into public view before the killings.

Alex’s father, Randolph Murdaugh III, was the top prosecutor overseeing South Carolina’s Lowcountry until 2005 — including Beaufort County, where the crash occurred. The family wielded enormous influence in the region.

Paul had taken out five friends in his father’s boat Feb. 23, 2019, and they were all drinking heavily. Paul had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit when he smashed into the piling of the bridge.

After the collision, it took more than a week to recover Beach’s body about five miles from the crash site.
