South American Gangs Linked to Recent Surge in LA Home Burglaries, DA Reports

0

Authorities have charged seven individuals with felonies related to a series of orchestrated residential burglaries stretching across Los Angeles County. These incidents encompass at least 20 break-ins attributed to groups active in the San Fernando Valley, prosecutors revealed on Tuesday.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the accused as orchestrating “bold, calculated, and predatory” acts that have left residents feeling vulnerable within their own homes.

Addressing the public at a news briefing, Hochman remarked, “These organized burglary groups are targeting hardworking families in what should be their safest haven—their homes. If you invade our communities to instill fear and prey on the innocent, rest assured that law enforcement will pursue you, and justice will be served.”

Officials noted that these cases underscore a rising challenge involving sophisticated burglary rings, including organized South American theft groups, that are active throughout Southern California. These groups employ advanced strategies to elude capture, specifically targeting upscale neighborhoods.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna warned residents that many crews conduct extensive surveillance before burglaries, often monitoring victims’ social media posts for expensive purchases or vacation photos that indicate homes may be empty.

“Please, whatever you do, don’t tell the world you’re in Paris when you live in LA,” Luna said.

Investigators said some crews disguise themselves as delivery drivers using fake DoorDash, Uber Eats or Amazon bags to approach homes without raising suspicion. Others use hidden cameras disguised as landscaping decorations and Wi-Fi jamming devices designed to disable home security systems and cloud-connected surveillance cameras.

One of the largest cases involves Byron Gonzálo Sáez Sotomayor, also known as Kevin Diaz, who prosecutors say is charged with 15 counts of first-degree residential burglary, three counts of attempted first-degree residential burglary and one count of grand theft of a firearm.

Authorities allege Sáez Sotomayor burglarized or attempted to burglarize 18 homes throughout the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles between January 2025 and May 2026, including homes in Reseda, Van Nuys, Encino, Granada Hills, Sun Valley, Beverlywood and Westwood. Prosecutors said he allegedly stole jewelry, handbags, money and a firearm.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said Sáez Sotomayor was arrested May 4 after allegedly breaking into a home in the Beverlywood area while a resident was inside the house.

According to McDonnell, the homeowner saw the suspect on surveillance cameras after hearing a loud crash at the rear of the property and locked himself inside a bathroom before calling 911.

Three other suspects — Christopher Sanchez, Owen Rivera-Chacon and Edisson Fabian Boyaca — were each charged with one felony count of first-degree residential burglary stemming from an alleged May 1 burglary in Santa Clarita.

Authorities said investigators with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office tracked the suspected crew into Los Angeles County before coordinating with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on a takedown operation along a freeway.

Deputies arrested Sanchez after stopping a vehicle on the freeway, while Rivera-Chacon allegedly fled on foot before being found in a nearby dry streambed. Boyaca was later arrested driving another vehicle roughly one mile away, authorities said.

Investigators recovered jewelry, cash, a luxury handbag, gloves, burglary tools and a Wi-Fi jammer from the suspects’ vehicles, according to law enforcement officials.

Rivera-Chacon also faces allegations tied to a prior strike conviction for residential burglary and could face up to 17 years in prison if convicted. Sanchez and Boyaca each face up to six years behind bars.

The final case announced Tuesday involves Wilmar Santiago Castelblanco-Robles, Alan Rolando Rodriguez-Pulido and Cristian Rios-Cuadros, who are each charged with one felony count of first-degree residential burglary tied to an alleged April 26 break-in at a home in Burbank.

Authorities said neighbors saw suspects breaking into the home and called police. Investigators allege Rios-Cuadros and Castelblanco-Robles fled on foot before officers used a police helicopter equipped with a heat-detection device to locate them hiding nearby.

Rodriguez-Pulido was later arrested while allegedly driving the suspected getaway vehicle, where officers recovered wallets, high-end handbags, watches and jewelry believed to have been stolen from other victims.

Luna said residential burglaries reported to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have dropped more than 30% since 2022, though he acknowledged crime statistics provide little comfort to victims whose homes were invaded.

“A victim that has had their sanctuary broken into — I don’t care what statistics say,” Luna said. “They broke into my house and I don’t feel safe sleeping there. That’s why we’re all up here. That’s why we will continue to work our butts off to make sure that we catch these individuals.”

Prince William Celebrates Aston Villa’s Historic Victory with Tears of Joy, Ending 30-Year Trophy Wait

Prince William took center stage during Aston Villa’s exuberant celebration after their impressive 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League, marking a historic win in Istanbul.

The Prince of Wales, a lifelong Aston Villa fan since his school days, was visibly ecstatic at Besiktas Park. He was seen cheering enthusiastically as Unai Emery’s team celebrated their first major trophy win in three decades.

The match saw Youri Tielemans and Emi Buendia deliver powerful goals in the first half, setting the stage for the victory. England’s Morgan Rogers sealed the triumph with a goal in the 58th minute, igniting joyous celebrations among the club’s supporters who had traveled from Birmingham.

After the match, William took to X to express his excitement: “What an incredible night! Huge congratulations to all the players, staff, and everyone connected with the club! It’s been 44 years since we last tasted European victory!”

He also gave a special mention to Boubacar Kamara, who has been sidelined due to injury but remains a crucial part of the team, acknowledging his contributions to the club’s recent success.

‘UTV! VTID’.

Earlier in the evening, William had paid a pre-match visit to the Villa dressing room, offering a final word of encouragement as Emery’s side prepared for the biggest game in a generation.

Dressed smartly in a black suit and blue shirt, he initially cut a tense figure while making his way through the tunnel ahead of kick-off. But there was little sign of nerves once the action began, as he cheered on a famous – and relatively straightforward – victory for the Birmingham club.

‘He’s a classy guy, he was in the dressing room before the game,’ Villa captain John McGinn said.

‘He’s a massive Villa fan and he was never going to miss it. It’s great to have his support and he’s just a normal guy. Hopefully it (his support) continues and tonight he can have a couple of drinks with us and maybe get his credit card out at the end of the night.’

In the lead-up to the game against the German side, defender Ezri Konsa said that William referring to him as a ‘Rolls-Royce’ counted as the greatest compliment of his career, and that the team were grateful for his support.

‘It’s weird because on game day when he comes in you’re focused on the game a lot, so sometimes you’re in the moment and you don’t realise how big it is that you have got him coming in to greet everyone, shaking everyone’s hand,’ said Konsa, a regular for Villa and England.

‘You go home and think: “Flipping hell, I just shook his hand, he knows my name”. It’s massive and to have his support is brilliant for the club and the players.

‘He called me a Rolls-Royce once. That got stuck in my head. I’ll take that all day. It was really nice.

‘I’m sure he’d know every player’s name … since I joined he has been showing unreal support, coming into the changing room, greeting everyone and showing everyone the utmost respect. Massive credit to him for taking his time to come and watch us and support us.’

The Prince of Wales had been vocal in his support of Emery’s side ahead of the final, taking to social media before the match to deliver a rallying cry: ‘Come on Villa! Good luck in tonight’s Europa League final. UTV! W’.

This followed his passionate showing at the semi-final, where he was seen enthusiastically punching the air as Villa dispatched Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest 4-0 to book their place in Wednesday night’s showpiece.

A die-hard Villa supporter since his school days, William once explained how he chose the club while studying in Berkshire, resisting the pull of more popular teams.

‘A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams,’ he told the BBC in 2015.

‘I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.’

William was born 26 days after Villa’s last European victory – when they lifted the European Cup after defeating Bayern Munich on May 26, 1982.

‘Aston Villa’s always had a great history. I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton v Aston Villa back in 2000. Sadly, Villa went on to lose to Chelsea (in the final),’ he said.

‘It was fantastic, I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was with all the Brummie fans and had a great time.

‘It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie and I really felt that there was something I could connect with.’

He has certainly witnessed a turbulent campaign, with Villa opening their Premier League season on a five-game winless streak that left them in the relegation zone.

Yet the narrative shifted dramatically before Christmas, as an 11-game winning run propelled them into the fringes of the title conversation.

While Emery was quick to temper expectations, Villa’s journey to Europa League victory this season stands as a clear testament to the resilience he has instilled in the side.

Creative Protest: John Adams Quote Lights Up DOJ in Bold Stand Against ‘Anti-Weaponization’ Fund

0

On Tuesday evening, a notable quote from John Adams, the second U.S. president, was illuminated on the Department of Justice building. This followed the Trump administration’s recent unveiling of a so-called “anti-weaponization fund.”

The phrase “A government of laws, not of men” was projected over a banner featuring President Trump, which is displayed on the building’s facade.

The projection was organized by Justice Connection, a group advocating for the preservation of the Justice Department’s “integrity” and the “rule of law,” according to its founder Stacey Young, as reported by NBC.

Young criticized the establishment of a $1.776 billion compensation fund intended for individuals claiming grievances against the government.

She described the fund as an “extraordinary abuse of power,” warning that it signals the deterioration of the rule of law. Young referred to the fund as a “slush fund.”

Justice Connection as well as some lawmakers have raised concerns with the fund.

“Trump is trying to commandeer nearly $1.8 billion in taxpayer funds to bankroll a slush fund for January 6 cop-beaters and aggrieved MAGA foot soldiers,” Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.) said in a statement.

“This massive abuse of public money also has glaring constitutional defects: Only Congress has the power to appropriate federal dollars, and we didn’t appropriate a cent for the J6 millionaire trust fund,” he added, after introducing a bill to block payments from the fund.

However, Trump and Vice President Vance defended the creation of the fund for claims against the government.

“We’re trying to compensate people where the book was thrown at them, they were mistreated by the legal system,” Vance told reporters at a Tuesday White House press briefing.

The creation of the fund comes after the Justice Department and Trump came to an agreement to dismiss a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS.

In exchange, the agency will be “forever barred” from auditing Trump’s old tax returns.

Trump and his oldest sons, who were also plaintiffs in the IRS suit, will not receive a payout from the fund but will be given a formal apology.

Hollywood Mourns the Loss of Horror Icon George Eastman as Tributes Pour In

George Eastman, the iconic figure in horror cinema whose real name was Luigi Montefiori, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, at the age of 83. His family confirmed that the Italian actor succumbed to his declining health at the “Gemelli Curae” clinic in Rome. Standing at an impressive 6’9”, Eastman transitioned from a rugby player to a celebrated actor and screenwriter, leaving a lasting mark in spaghetti westerns and horror films. His close collaboration with renowned Italian horror director Joe D’Amato resulted in unforgettable work, including acting and writing credits for films like “Absurd” and “Red Blood,” both released in 1981.

Eastman’s acting prowess shone through in his role as a villain in Mario Bava’s intense road thriller “Rabid Dogs.” From the 1990s onwards, he focused primarily on television, contributing as a screenwriter to series such as “La squadra,” “Il maresciallo Rocca,” “Il cuore nel pozzo,” and “Uno bianca.” He also worked on popular melodramas like “L’onore e il rispetto” and “Il peccato e la vergogna.”

In 1990, he expanded his creative pursuits by directing the science fiction horror film “DNA – Formula letale,” which earned him the top prize at the Avoriaz Film Festival.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from fans worldwide. One admirer expressed on Facebook, “A genuine legend of Euro Horror, Sci-Fi, Western & Exploitation cinema. RIP Sir.” Another fan reflected, “RIP greatest actor… I like his roles in Ben and Charlie… Django kills slowly… Viva Django… Boot Hill… Man Eater.”

Another added: “RIP greatest actor… I like his roles in Ben and Charlie… Django kills slowly… Viva Django… Boot Hill… Man Eater.”

A third chimed in: “We’re saddened by the passing of George Eastman: actor, screenwriter, and a genuine giant of Italian cinema. His story for Keoma (1976) remains one of the genre’s finest. A talent whose contribution ran deeper than most realised. RIP.”

A fourth penned: “I must have seen at least fifteen films with him in!! What a legend.”

A fifth shared: “Very sad to hear about the passing of EuroHorror legend George Eastman, the Anthropophagous beast himself. RIP George and thanks for all the films.”

Meanwhile a sixth lamented: “If you love your Italian movies, especially those of Joe D’Amato, and horror or westerns there’s sad news that Luigi Montefiori aka George Eastman has passed away today aged 83. RIP Big Man!”

He is survived by his wife, Manuela, his three children, Evelina, 36, Arianna, 31, and Tommaso and his two grandchildren, Giulio, aged 4 months, the son of his eldest daughter, Evelina; and Allegra, aged 2 months, the daughter of Arianna and Mattia Briga.

Unmasking the Challenges: Why Detecting and Containing the Global Ebola Crisis is More Complex Than Ever

0

IN BRIEF

  • Experts have warned Ebola cases as part of the current outbreak may be significantly undercounted.
  • While there is no vaccine for the rare Bungibugyo strain, researchers say post-COVID technology could make development faster.

Fever, vomiting, and severe diarrhea are hallmark symptoms of the Ebola virus, a highly contagious and lethal disease responsible for thousands of deaths across several African outbreaks since 1976.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized the Ebola crisis currently affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a global health emergency. This decision stems from concerns that the virus might be spreading more extensively than reported data indicates.

Since the outbreak’s detection in April, over 130 individuals have succumbed to the virus, and more than 500 suspected cases have been recorded.

However, experts now suggest that the actual number of infections may be much higher. According to the London-based MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, there could already be over 1,000 cases.

Professor Catherine Bennett, an epidemiology chair at Deakin University, explained to SBS News that controlling the outbreak is particularly challenging due to its occurrence in a conflict-ridden area. The region’s compromised healthcare facilities, significant population displacements, and limited testing capabilities exacerbate the situation.

“A high number of displaced people who are struggling to survive has made it challenging to provide care in the midst of a severe outbreak,” Bennett said.

One confirmed death has also been recorded in neighbouring Uganda.

Australian National University associate professor Sanjaya Senanayake, an infectious diseases specialist, warned that the virus could have circulated undetected for “some weeks” before health authorities identified the first cases.

He said investigating the outbreak was especially difficult because it is unfolding in a remote region affected by conflict and instability.

“We still don’t know what the index case was, so that is one big problem … We will only start to know the number of deaths as investigation teams get on the ground and look really closely at communities that have been infected,” Senanayake said.

The World Health Organization’s emergency declaration is designed to unlock funding, international support and medical resources as authorities try to slow the spread of the virus before it worsens.

Unlike previous major Ebola outbreaks, this one is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, a form of the virus for which there is currently no approved vaccine.

It is a far rarer form of the virus than the better-known Zaire strain that caused the devastating West African Ebola epidemic between 2014 and 2016 that killed over 11,000 people.

Why health authorities are so concerned

Associate professor Paul Griffin, director of infectious diseases at the University of Queensland, told SBS News that several factors are making the current outbreak more dangerous than a typical Ebola flare-up.

“There are a few very concerning factors … There are already a number of cases in Uganda which are not necessarily related. We’re seeing cases in densely populated areas, meaning it’s certainly likely there are many more. We’ve seen healthcare worker cases, which tells us there have not been sufficient measures in place and health centres may actually be locations of amplification,” he said.

Senanayake told SBS News that the DRC has successfully managed Ebola outbreaks in the past, and noted it is experienced in navigating the challenges associated with the disease’s containment “despite being a developing country”.

The virus appears to have circulated undetected for weeks before the first known case, a nurse in the country’s east, was identified in late April.

By then, infections had likely already spread through communities and across provincial borders.

With the outbreak taking place in a region heavily affected by armed conflict and displacement, cross-border movement between the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan remains high.

Aid agencies have reportedly warned that overwhelmed health systems and poor sanitation conditions are increasing the risk of transmission.

The Red Cross has also raised concerns about funeral practices, which historically have played a major role in spreading Ebola because the virus can remain highly infectious after death.

Senanayake said traditional burials in this region usually involve very close contact with the bodies of the deceased.

“In previous Ebola outbreaks, a lot of mourners have been infected,” he said.

“In the past, health authorities instituted dignified but safe burial measures, so those will have to be put in place as well.”

What is the Bundibugyo strain, and why is it different?

Bundibugyo is one of six known species of the Ebola virus, and one of four capable of causing disease in humans, but it has only triggered two recorded outbreaks before now, in 2007 and 2012.

Because those outbreaks were relatively small, vaccine development was never prioritised in the same way it was for the Zaire strain, which has caused most major Ebola epidemics over the past 50 years.

That means there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments specifically designed for Bundibugyo Ebola.

Griffin said existing Ebola vaccines work by targeting proteins on the virus’ surface, and those proteins differ substantially between strains.

“We have really only seen a small number of outbreaks of this particular type of Ebola … This is the one that is a little newer and a little rarer than some of the other more common types of Ebola that we have seen over a longer period of time,” Griffin said.

Investigations are underway to determine whether vaccines developed for the Zaire strain may still offer some cross-protection, but there isn’t enough evidence yet to know whether they will work effectively against Bundibugyo in humans.

Despite the lack of a vaccine, experts stressed to SBS News that the virus is far less transmissible than airborne diseases such as COVID-19 because it spreads through close contact with infected bodily fluids rather than through the air.

What are the symptoms of Ebola?

Ebola initially causes symptoms that can resemble other viral illnesses, including fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue and weakness.

As the disease progresses, patients can develop severe vomiting and diarrhoea, dehydration and organ complications. Some patients also experience internal or external bleeding, although not all cases involve haemorrhaging.

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood or bodily fluids, including vomit and saliva, as well as contaminated surfaces and materials.

“In many ways, this strain is very similar to others, in that it starts off with very non-specific flu-like symptoms and sometimes some gastro symptoms and progresses into a more severe hemorrhagic fever where people bleed from basically everywhere,” Griffin said.

Senanayake also said early diagnosis and supportive medical care can significantly improve survival rates.

Treatments such as intravenous fluids and intensive monitoring can help patients recover, but access to even basic healthcare remains limited in many affected areas.

Could a vaccine be developed quickly?

Researchers say advances in vaccine technology since the COVID-19 pandemic mean a new Ebola vaccine could potentially be developed faster than in previous outbreaks.

“Our ability to make vaccines for emerging pathogens has come a really long way … So with platform technology that is able to be adapted rapidly, we should be able to make a vaccine from scratch for something like this quite quickly,” Griffin said.

But experts caution that producing and distributing a vaccine still requires significant funding, international coordination and clinical testing.

Scale and speed of this outbreak

Health authorities say they are increasingly concerned about both the pace of the outbreak and the possibility that the true number of infections is being underestimated.

This week, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was “deeply concerned” by the speed at which cases appear to be spreading, as suspected infections and deaths continue to rise.

The United States has also strengthened its travel advice for the region, urging Americans to avoid travel to the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan while the outbreak continues.

US officials say they will fund up to 50 Ebola response clinics in affected regions of the DRC and Uganda as part of efforts to contain the virus.

Many infections have been concentrated around gold-mining towns in eastern DRC, where frequent cross-border movement has complicated containment efforts.

Cases have also been identified hundreds of kilometres away in the city of Goma in addition to neighbouring Uganda, raising fears the outbreak may already be more widespread than initially thought.

Griffin said that mobility, combined with limited testing and fragile healthcare systems, has made it difficult to establish the true scale of the outbreak.

The Bundibugyo strain responsible for the outbreak has only caused two previous epidemics, in Uganda in 2007 and in the DRC in 2012. According to the WHO, those outbreaks had estimated fatality rates of between 30 and 50 per cent.

Heroic 85-Year-Old Oregon Resident Foils Kidnapping by Fake Utility Worker

0

An elderly man is being celebrated as a local hero after bravely intervening in an attempted kidnapping by a man pretending to be a utility worker outside his residence in Oregon.

This courageous 85-year-old, whose name remains undisclosed, sprang into action from his mobile home in a Medford community upon hearing a woman’s cries for help earlier this month.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, he encountered 42-year-old Matthew Hokulii Aranda, who was armed with a taser and trying to abduct a 25-year-old caregiver.

On the morning of May 8, the senior citizen confronted the attacker, providing crucial moments for the distressed woman to escape, even as he was allegedly tased by Aranda.

The authorities reported that Aranda pursued her with a large hunting knife, but she managed to reach her car just in time, eluding further danger.

He then dove onto the hood of her car as the caretaker was turning on the ignition. She was able to shake him off as she sped away — breaking his leg in the process, according to body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office.

Cops found a battered Aranda cowering in a nearby bush. He moaned about his broken leg as they pulled him out of his hiding spot, before cuffing and hauling him off, body cam footage showed.

Dressed in a plain white t-shirt and khakis, Aranda had allegedly posed as a utility worker — and loitered for several hours while waiting for the victim.

The condition of the elderly hero and the victim are not immediately clear.

Aranda was indicted on May 14 on a laundry list of charges, including stalking, attempted kidnapping, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

He was convicted in 2016 of charges stemming from his relationship with a 16-year-old girl he sexually exploited and stalked.

Several other charges, including one for first-degree rape, were dropped as part of a plea deal, the Rogue Valley Times reported.

Aranda was sentenced to just over six years in prison for that crime.

Trump Urges GOP to Replace Senate Parliamentarian for Policy Shift

0

Donald Trump has directed Senate Republicans to dismiss the parliamentarian, Elizabeth McDonough, due to her disapproval of a $1 billion funding bill for ICE and his ballroom.

In a detailed post on Truth Social this Wednesday, Trump criticized McDonough, accusing her of favoritism towards Democrats after she determined that the funding for his ballroom could not be part of a reconciliation bill.

“Over the years, she has been harsh towards Republicans but not the ‘Dumocrats.’ So why hasn’t she been replaced? There are numerous qualified individuals who could fairly fill that crucial role,” Trump expressed.

He further alleged that McDonough operated under the influence of the late Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, whom he described as a “vicious lunatic.”

Trump added, “Republicans play a very gentle game compared to the ‘Dumocrats,’” employing his new moniker for the opposing party.

‘It is their single biggest disadvantage in politics. The Dumocrats cheat, lie, and steal, especially when it comes to Votes in Elections, but stick together, whereas the Republicans allow the Elizabeth MacDonoughs of the World to stay in power, and brutalize us,’ he added.

He promised that there would never be another Republican president again if they didn’t pass his favored Save America Act, adding that the Democrats would grant DC and Puerto Rico statehood.

‘The Republicans aren’t doing it because they say the Dumocrats will never do it, but the Republicans are WRONG. Get smart and tough Republicans, or you’ll all be looking for a job much sooner than you thought possible!’

The parliamentarian is more often than not an afterthought, typically because their role is to be the Senate’s hall monitor, essentially making sure mundane processes on the floor are adhered to.

However, the parliamentarian is thrust into the spotlight every time senators try to pass a bill through budget reconciliation, a process that allows the Senate to pass items with a simple majority instead of the usual 60 votes needed to overcome the filibuster.

The appeal of the reconciliation process is obvious. Since Republicans control 53 seats in the Senate, a united GOP can essentially pass the bill without input from a single Democratic senator.

The catch is, MacDonough can pick and choose which line items in the bill need to be slashed with red ink. She will be responsible for interpreting whether the bill complies with something called the Byrd Rule, which has been around since 1985.

The Byrd Rule is named after the late Sen. Robert Byrd, who was a key figure in instituting the guardrails around reconciliation packages like the one Trump is trying to ram through.

The most important facet of the Byrd Rule states that reconciliation bills cannot have provisions in them that don’t have an effect on the budget.

Put simply, if a provision doesn’t meaningfully increase or decrease federal spending, it can be considered extraneous and be tossed out of the bill.

The Byrd Rule also prohibits reconciliation bills from overhauling Social Security or increasing the deficit for a fiscal year not included in the bill’s purview.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the comments 'concerning' and unnecessary, since many of the issues in the bill have the votes to pass

Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the comments ‘concerning’ and unnecessary, since many of the issues in the bill have the votes to pass

The test to see whether a bill complies with the rule has been referred to as the ‘Byrd Bath.’

MacDonough last used the ‘Byrd Bath’ to water down President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better package in 2022.

Specifically, she struck down three separate attempts by the Democrats to provide a pathway to citizenship for eight million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

Now, she’s in the position to take a major bite out of Trump’s agenda, though its not entirely clear what she might take aim at.

Pressured by the White House, Republicans have tried to add the money to a roughly $70 billion bill to restore funding to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol.

But the security proposal has met with backlash from some GOP lawmakers who are questioning the cost and the lack of detail from the White House and U.S. Secret Service about how the taxpayer dollars would be used.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the comments ‘concerning’ and unnecessary, since many of the issues in the bill have the votes to pass.

‘That’s, I guess, his opinion. But that would create even more vote issues here if we were to try and do something like that. So we’ll make sure that everybody has got security around here,’ he told Politico.

Left in the bill is the money for ICE and Border Patrol, which Democrats have blocked for months in protest of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement crackdown.

Democrats demanded reforms for the agencies, but negotiations with the White House yielded little progress.

So Republicans are using the complicated budget maneuver called reconciliation — the same process that allowed them to pass Trump’s tax and spending cuts bill last year — to fund the agencies through the end of Trump’s term with a simple majority and no Democratic votes.

Still, passage requires signoff from the parliamentarian, and unity from Republicans.

‘We’re working on it,’ Thune said as he left the Capitol on Wednesday evening.

There is precedent for the Senate simply ignoring the parliamentarian.

The declarations of MacDonough and all the other parliamentarians before her have been non-binding and lacking in actual enforcement power.

Going back a bit further, there is also precedent of Senate leaders getting rid of the parliamentarian over disagreements on the Byrd Rule.

On May 7, 2001, then-Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., fired the parliamentarian at the time, Robert Dove, because he was getting in the way of President George W Bush’s budget bill.

Exactly one month later, with a new parliamentarian in place, Bush was able to sign his first landmark tax cut into law.

Open Heaven 21 May 2026 TOPIC – God Above All

MEMORISE: For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. – Psalm 135:5 (KJV)

READ: Psalm 95:1-6 (KJV)

1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.

5 The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Nehemiah 1-3

Open Heaven 21 May 2026 MESSAGE

In Exodus 7:10, when Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh bearing a message from the Lord, they demonstrated the power of the One who sent them by casting down Aaron’s rod, and it turned into a snake. The Egyptian magicians also turned their rods into snakes, but it soon became obvious that all power belongs to God, as the snake from Aaron’s rod swallowed all the magicians’ snakes. The devil might attempt to copy God, but he will always fail because God is above all (1 Chronicles 29:11-12). For instance, the devil has given many people wealth through various unholy means, but my God is the only One who gives power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18). Furthermore, the wealth that comes from God’s blessing is without sorrow (Proverbs 10:22).

The Almighty God can change the unchangeable. He can take a beggar from a dunghill and cause him or her to dine with princes (1 Samuel 2:8). He can also do the impossible. In one night, He delivered His people from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 12:31-33). He also provided food for them for 40 years in the wilderness. He fed them with the food of angels and gave them meat throughout their journey to the Promised Land (Psalm 78:24-25). Furthermore, they didn’t need new clothes or shoes because their clothes and shoes did not wear out (Deuteronomy 29:5). The God who did all these wonders can do exceeding abundantly above all you can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). He can meet your needs effortlessly because the cattle upon a thousand hills are His (Psalm 50:10), and all the silver and gold in the world belong to Him (Haggai 2:8). He owns the whole earth and everything within it (Psalm 24:1). He is God above all gods (2 Chronicles 2:5); the King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15).

Beloved, isn’t it amazing that the One who is above all is your Father? He has given you access to all His wisdom, riches, glory, power, grace, and goodness, and all He expects from you is your praise and worship. He expects your love and devotion, and He truly deserves it all. If you really want God’s special attention and you want to experience His almightiness, ask Him to give you a heart of worship today because He will give His attention, which will come with all that He has, to those who worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24).

Open Heaven 21 May 2026 PRAYER POINT

Father, thank You for calling me Your own. Please, give me a heart that loves to worship You at all times.

Open Heaven 21 May 2026 HYMN 18 – Praise To The Lord The Almighty, The King Of Creation

1 Praise to the Lord,
the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health
and salvation:
Join the great throng
psaltery, organ and song
sounding in glad adoration.

2 Praise to the Lord,
over all things he gloriously reigneth:
Borne as on eagle-wings, safely his saints,
He sustaineth
Has thou not seen
How all thou needest hath been
Granted in what he ordaineth?

3 Praise to the Lord,
Who doth prosper thy way and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall ever
attend thee; ponder anew,
What the almighty can do
Who with his love doth befriend thee.

4 Praise to the Lord!
O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has breath join with Abraham’s
Seed to adore him! Let the Amen,
Sum all our praises again;
Now as we worship before him.

DCLM Daily Manna 21 May 2026 — Two Sides Of God

DCLM Daily Manna 21 May 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Two Sides Of God

TOPIC: Two Sides Of God (DCLM Daily Manna 21 May 2026)

KEY VERSE: Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off – Romans 11:22

TEXT: Romans 11:17-32 (KJV)

17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father’s sakes.

29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:

31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

In 1998, Don Moen produced his hit song, God is Good, All the Time which has become a catchphrase for Christians. The goodness of God is emphasised in the Bible. The psalmist says, ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good’. 1 Chronicles 16:34 says, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever”. If the goodness and mercies of God endure forever, does this imply that God has no room for discipline and judgment?

He does; therefore in our text, Apostle Paul warned the Gentiles not to take the goodness of God for granted by recalling the calamity that befell the children of Israel. The aim was to discourage them from gloating over Israel and become wise in their own conceits. He said the same fate would befall them if they behaved the same way. The passage today exposes the error in the doctrine of unconditional eternal security.

Today, believers must remember that our security is also conditional. Prosperity preachers emphasise the mercy and goodness of God but hardly warn their congregation of the danger of hell and the imminent judgment of God. The goodness of God may be as high as the heavens, and His love may be as deep as the deepest ocean. His justice demands punishment for those who rebel against His authority and disobey His laws. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” These are those who forget that, “our God is a consuming fire.” Let us always remember the warning that, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” The hands that fed the children of Israel with manna in the wilderness also punished them for their iniquities. Therefore, as you enjoy the goodness of God, beware not to incur His wrath. Steer clear of sin.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The justice of God is a coin with two sides: reward and retribution.

Rhapsody Of Realities 21 May 2026: Use The Word To Judge The Right Counsel

Rhapsody Of Realities 21 May 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Use The Word To Judge The Right Counsel

TOPIC: Use The Word To Judge The Right Counsel (Rhapsody of Realities 21 May 2026)

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day (Matthew 16:21).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Matthew 16 reveals an important moment between the Lord Jesus and His disciples. After they had been preaching and declaring Him the Christ, the Master began to focus inward, revealing what was to come. He instructed His disciples to keep His identity secret for the time being.

Soon after, He explained that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things, be killed, and then raised back to life. Upon hearing all that, Peter did something unbelievable. The Bible says he took the Lord aside “…and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee” (Matthew 16:22).

Think about that; Peter rebuking the Master. The Lord knew it was Satan who spoke through Peter and addressed Satan directly, saying, “…Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:23).

Peter, on that occasion, must have been startled, because he wasn’t aware it was the devil who put those words in his mouth. It matters who you’re speaking for. Only give vent to the things that be of God. Never lend your voice in support of Satan.

It’s the reason knowing the Word and having it renew your mind is so important. Let the Word of God dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16). The knowledge of God’s Word makes you discerning; you’re able to judge good from evil and prove (allow) the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God (Romans 12:2). With the light of God’s Word, you’re able to judge what’s coming from you, what’s coming from Satan or what’s coming from God.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for your Word that gives me understanding and discernment. My heart is established in your truth, and I recognise every thought, voice and influence that is not from you. My knowledge of your Word guides me, and I speak in alignment with your will at all times. I walk in victory, and I live conscious of who I am in Christ. Hallelujah!

FURTHER STUDY

Colossians 3:16 (KJV) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Romans 12:2 (KJV) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
