Anthony Volpe Shines in Subway Series Amid Uncertain Yankees Future

0

Sunday’s game, which seemed set to be a highlight for Anthony Volpe, ended in a disappointing loss for the Yankees.

However, the significance of Volpe’s performance should extend beyond the 7-6 defeat at the hands of the Mets at Citi Field.

In his fourth appearance this season, following offseason shoulder surgery and losing his starting shortstop position to José Caballero, Volpe excelled. He went 2-for-3, drove in three runs, hit a double, and earned two walks.

Volpe appeared to clinch the game with a two-run single in the sixth inning, breaking a 1-1 deadlock. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn’t hold onto leads of 5-1 and 6-3, overshadowing his efforts.

“Incredible: That’s the guy we know,” said Aaron Judge. “He’s been our shortstop for the past couple of seasons because he steps up when it matters. He made some crucial plays, delivered significant hits, and showed patience at the plate in tough situations. With more at-bats, he’s returning to form after major shoulder surgery, so it takes a few games to adjust.”

“But I was definitely encouraged by what I saw today.”

Volpe, who collided with Max Schuemann as both tried to make a play on Carson Benge’s walk-off chopper over the mound in the bottom of the 10th, reached base in nine of his 13 plate appearances in the Subway Series, going 2-for-6 with seven walks — one of which came with the bases loaded Sunday to drive in another run in the seventh inning.

“I’m just trying to stay within myself, stay within my approach and put good swings on good pitches,” Volpe said. “Obviously, it fluctuates, but I just want to stay locked into that. Every day, that’s what I can control.”

Volpe cannot control that Caballero expects to miss only the minimum 10 days on the injured list with a fracture in his right middle finger — he is eligible to return Friday — and that manager Aaron Boone has already said he expects Caballero will get his starting job back when he returns.

But the 25-year-old Volpe at least has the opportunity to give the Yankees something to think about if he can show enough on both sides of the ball while Caballero is out.

Volpe’s first hit of the season came on a 104.5 mph double to the gap off Freddy Peralta in the second inning before he struck out in his second at-bat.

He delivered a two-run single off lefty Sean Manaea with the bases loaded in the sixth to put the Yankees ahead 3-1.

After walking in a run in the seventh, Volpe drew another 3-2 walk against Devin Williams in the top of the 10th, only for Austin Wells to follow by grounding into an inning-ending double play.

“Just trying to do my job and contribute in any way I can,” Volpe said. “I got some good pitches to hit and put some good swings on them.”

Conan the Barbarian Star Passes Away Just Months Before Milestone Birthday, Leaving Fans Heartbroken

Renowned actor Jack Taylor, celebrated for his roles in “Conan the Barbarian” and “Count Dracula,” has passed away at the age of 99. Over the course of his prolific career, Taylor graced numerous films and worked alongside legendary figures such as Marilyn Monroe. He died on May 12, 2026, just months shy of his 100th birthday in October, a milestone he was close to reaching. Despite his extensive filmography, Taylor chose not to live in the bustling epicenter of Hollywood, opting instead to make Madrid his home for more than six decades.

His choice of residence didn’t hinder his television career. Taylor is remembered for his compelling performance as a priest opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1982 film “Conan the Barbarian,” directed by John Milius. In 1999, he captivated audiences again in Roman Polanski’s “The Ninth Gate,” where he played an antique book collector alongside Johnny Depp. Additionally, he appeared in Milos Forman’s “Goya’s Ghosts” in 2006.

In Spain, Taylor featured in a variety of films, including the X-rated “Succubis” in 1968 and “Eugenia” in 1970, among others. Reports suggest that after experiencing challenges in Hollywood, he relocated to Mexico, mastered the language, and secured roles in films like “The Ivory Tower” and “Nostradamus y el Destructor de Monstruous.”

Born George Brown Randall, Taylor continued to enjoy a thriving stage career after settling in Madrid. His initial visit to the city was for a performance in the Mexican musical comedy “La Pelirroja,” a trip that ultimately led him to make Madrid his permanent home.

Following the news of his passing, tributes have flooded in for the beloved actor. A fellow actor shared on social media, “Sad news today: my recent co-star, the incredible legendary Jack Taylor, who played my lead antagonist in ‘The Birthday,’ has passed away at 99. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of Jack’s friends and family.”

Another wrote: “He was great in The Ninth Gate, and Conan the Barbarian. He’s the priest guy that Conan lures behind a tent and knocks him out to steal his robes. 99 is a good run. Sad to see him go though.” While a third said: “RIP, time to watch Pieces again.”

Prior to his death, he published his memoirs titled My 100 Years of Cinema, but sadly died before making it to the triple figure. The book acted as a retrospective on his extensive career in the film industry, focusing on all the trials and tribulations he faced while he tried to make it in Hollywood.

Massive Turnout at National Mall: America-Themed Prayer Rally Captivates Thousands

0

WASHINGTON (AP) — On Sunday, throngs of attendees gathered at the National Mall for a full day of prayer and reflection, an event aimed at reaffirming the nation’s commitment to unity “under God.”

Set against the iconic silhouette of the Washington Monument, the rally featured a stage filled with the sounds of worship music and a distinctly Christian theme. The stage design included arched stained-glass windows and grand columns reminiscent of federal architecture, showcasing depictions of the nation’s founders alongside a prominent white cross.

Many of the speakers at the event emphasized the historical connections between Christianity and the United States, a perspective that some critics preemptively criticized as an endorsement of Christian nationalism.

In a video message recorded in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump contributed to the rally by reciting a Scripture passage. This same footage was previously broadcast during a Bible-reading marathon. The chosen verses from 2 Chronicles resonate with those who assert that America’s roots are deeply Christian.

Trump quoted, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Other top Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., were also on the schedule as part of the celebrations this year marking 250 years of U.S. independence.

Many names on the Rededicate 250 program were among Trump’s longtime evangelical supporters, including Paula White-Cain of the White House Faith Office and evangelist Franklin Graham of Samaritan’s Purse.

“We are deeply concerned that what is really being rededicated is a nation to a very narrow and ideological part of the Christian faith that betrays our nation’s fundamental commitment to religious freedom,” said the Rev. Adam Russell Taylor, a Baptist minister who leads the progressive Christian organization Sojourners.

The conservative Christian lineup featured guests who often argue that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, a narrative disputed by many historians and other religious traditions.

Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, noted the religious diversity of early America, including Jews, Muslims and Indigenous people. “I want to shine a light on America’s history as a nation that welcomes, celebrates, and protects people of all faiths and those of no faith,” Pesner said.

Attendees believe prayer event is significant

Many in the crowd wore Trump hats and patriotic colors, joining the festivities under a sweltering sun.

“It’s all about Jesus,” said Denny Smith, 72, of Rhode Island, who rented a motorized scooter to traverse the National Mall.

Retha Bond, 58 and from southern Illinois, also heard Trump speak not far away on Jan. 6, 2021. She said she did not join the protesters who rioted later that day at the Capitol but has remained a steadfast Trump supporter.

“I’m not saying Trump is the savior,” Bond said. She added that “this is one of the most important things that could be going on in the world, for us to rededicate our nation back to God.”

Speakers mentioned the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk from the stage. Kirk’s activism has been a powerful example for Alessandra Seawright, 15, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, who came to Rededicate 250 with her mother.

“I think we just need more of this in our country, and we just need to share the word of the Lord,” she said. “We love going to events like this.”

They also attended Kirk’s memorial service, which mixed Christian worship and political messages. Events like these, Seawright said, help her feel less alone in her conservative Christian beliefs.

Prayer event spurs protest

Hegseth, who has infused Christian language and worship with his role leading the Pentagon, asked the gathering in a video to pray to “our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Referencing George Washington’s faith, he said, “Let us pray without ceasing. Let us pray for our nation on bended knee.”

Orthodox Jewish Rabbi Meir Soloveichik was the only non-Christian religious leader listed on the program. To applause, he told the crowd, “Antisemitism is utterly un-American” — a seeming reference to debates dividing the right.

Soloveichik serves on the Trump administration’s Religious Liberty Commission along with White-Cain, Graham and Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Bishop Robert Barron, Catholic clerics also featured on the program.

The event was organized by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership backed by the White House. Congressional Democrats have questioned the nonprofit’s structure and finances, which they see as a Trump-controlled end run around a separate commission charted by Congress a decade ago to prepare semiquincentennial events.

Progressive groups staged counterprogramming. Among them were the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which advocates a strict separation of church and state, and the Christian organization Faithful America. The two groups displayed a large balloon near the mall of a Trump-like golden calf, in a biblical reference to idolatry.

On Thursday evening, the Interfaith Alliance projected protest slogans onto an exterior wall of the National Gallery of Art. “Democracy not theocracy,” said one. Another said: “The separation of church and state is good for both.”

Trump Issues Stern Warning to Iran: ‘The Clock is Ticking

0

Donald Trump has issued his most ominous warning to Iran so far, as diplomatic efforts to reach a resolution have hit a standstill.

On Sunday, the former President took to Truth Social to unleash a fiery message.

“Iran, your time is running out, and you’d better act quickly, or there will be nothing left,” Trump declared. “Time is of the essence! President DJT.”

His words have ignited concerns that he might consider resuming military actions against Iran if a resolution with the United States isn’t promptly reached.

Trump’s statement coincided with his planned conversation with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday afternoon, aiming to address the latest regional developments.

An Israeli official told Axios the two discussed Iran, and the outlet also reported that Trump’s national security team is expected to meet on Tuesday.

Iranian media reported Sunday that the Trump administration had offered no meaningful concessions in response to the Iranian regime’s latest proposals, raising fears that negotiations could crumble.

The warning came after President Trump said the fragile ceasefire was on ‘massive life support’ and dismissed Iran’s counteroffer as ‘totally unacceptable.’

A drone strike targeted the United Arab Emirates’ sole nuclear power plant on Sunday, sparking a fire on its perimeter.

There were no reports of injuries or radiological release, but it highlighted the risk of renewed war as the Iran ceasefire remains tenuous.

No one claimed responsibility, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) did not blame anyone for what it said was an ‘unprovoked terrorist attack.’

On domestic soil, Americans are increasingly bearing the cost of the conflict.

The Trump administration is under pressure to end the war in Iran as the midterm elections loom, with gas prices rocketing by more than 50 percent to a nationwide average of $4.51 per gallon.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth tried to avoid giving a clear answer about the cost of conflict during an appearance before lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning.

Hegseth appeared before the House Appropriations Committee last week to discuss the Pentagon’s budget, alongside Pentagon comptroller Jay Hurst and Caine.

The Defense Secretary was probed by California Democrat Pete Aguilar to share more details about the budget, to which Hegseth said the Pentagon would ‘share what we can when it’s relevant and required.’

Aguilar then responded that he believes, ‘this would be the format that would be required.’

Hurst told lawmakers that the estimated cost of the war had risen to $29 billion, up from the earlier $25 billion he had presented to lawmakers while appearing on Capitol Hill at the end of April.

‘That’s because of updated repair and replacement of equipment costs, and also just general operational costs to keep people in theater,’ Hurst noted as justification.

Diplomatic efforts for a more durable peace have faltered, and fighting has heated up between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon despite a nominal ceasefire there.

The UAE recently accused Iran of launching drone and missile attacks as tensions have risen over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy waterway gripped by Iran, which is under a US naval blockade.

The UAE has hosted air defenses and personnel from Israel, which sparked the war by attacking Iran with the US on February 28.

Iranian state television, meanwhile, aired segments with news anchors holding rifles in an effort to prepare the public for war.

The UAE Defense Ministry said three drones came over its western border with Saudi Arabia, with the other two intercepted. It was investigating who launched them.

Iran-backed Shiite militias in Iraq have also launched drone attacks targeting Gulf Arab states in the war.

Austin Police Detain Two Teens Suspected in Connection with a Dozen Shootings, Four Injured

0

Two teenagers were apprehended by Austin police on Sunday, suspected of involvement in a dozen shooting incidents throughout the city. These events resulted in injuries to four individuals, impacted two fire stations, and led to a shelter-in-place advisory for South Austin residents.

The arrests were announced by Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis, who confirmed that the suspects, aged 15 and 17, were detained following a spree of shootings that began late Saturday night and extended into Sunday morning.

“We have taken two suspects into custody,” Davis stated during a press briefing on Sunday. “The individuals in question are a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old.”

According to officials, the older teenager was already wanted for an alleged firearm theft from a local store, the same location where the younger teen is accused of stealing another gun.

Surveillance image released by Austin police shows a suspect connected to multiple shootings.

The Austin Police Department also released surveillance photos of a suspect believed to be linked to the city’s recent shooting spree.

According to police, the suspects allegedly stole multiple vehicles throughout the spree and fired shots at apartment complexes, homes, pedestrians and two fire stations.

Davis said one fire station was shot at twice and a fire truck was struck while firefighters were nearby.

Officials said four people were shot during the incidents. One victim suffered critical injuries but was in stable condition, while three others sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said emergency responders treated victims at four separate shooting scenes across the city.

“At this time, most of the shootings have occurred in South Austin,” Davis said earlier Sunday. “No specific motive, and they appear to be random in nature.”

Authorities initially warned residents to shelter in place in an area bounded by South Slaughter Lane, East McKinney Falls Parkway, North Ben White Boulevard and West Escarpment Boulevard while officers searched for the suspects.

The shelter-in-place order was later lifted after the two suspects were taken into custody, though police said a possible third person fled from a vehicle stop in the Manor area.

Austin police said the suspects cycled through several stolen vehicles during the spree, including a black or dark blue Hyundai, a gold Hyundai sedan, a silver Mazda four-door and a white Kia Optima.

Davis urged residents not to leave keys or key fobs inside vehicles.

“What we are seeing are these cars are being stolen,” Davis said.

Authorities said the investigation began after officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle from an apartment complex and a stolen firearm. Police later said investigators connected the incidents as additional shootings were reported throughout the city.

Davis described the investigation as “complex” because of the number of scenes, stolen vehicles and random shootings spread across multiple areas of Austin.

Police said officers responded to shootings involving apartment buildings and homes while going door-to-door to ensure residents had not been injured.

Davis said surveillance video appeared to show one shooting in front of a store where two people were struck after suspects fired from a passing vehicle.

Police also said a man walking his dog was shot in the back Sunday morning.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the coordinated response from local and regional law enforcement agencies, including the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Manor Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety.

“This was a rapidly evolving event involving multiple incidents in multiple locations,” Watson said.

Davis also suggested license plate reader technology could have helped investigators more quickly connect the shootings and stolen vehicle reports.

“We need to take seriously the fact that we’ve got two juveniles, 15 and 17, running around with guns creating this havoc,” Davis said.

Salmonella Alerts: Key Food Recalls to Watch This Month

(NEXSTAR) – A variety of consumables, ranging from frozen pizzas and pork rinds to seasonings and pet food, have recently faced health alerts or recalls due to potential salmonella contamination.

Salmonella bacteria are responsible for causing salmonellosis, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This infection can occur through consuming or coming into contact with contaminated water, interacting with animals and their environments (notably, a recent outbreak was traced back to backyard chickens), or ingesting tainted food.

The CDC notes that salmonella infections typically manifest as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms often appear six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without medical intervention within four to seven days, the infection can pose a greater risk to young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

MEMORISE: Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. – Matthew 21:21 (KJV)

READ: Matthew 17:19-20 (KJV)

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Ezra1-4

Open Heaven 18 May 2026 MESSAGE

Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is living, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. Also, John 1:1-3 tells us that all things were created by the word of God. As powerful as God’s word is, however, when it is spoken in unbelief, it cannot be expected to produce results.

In (1 John 4:4), it is written that greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. God lives within you, and He is greater than every problem or challenge that the world can throw your way. This is the absolute truth about you; you are above poverty and destruction because God’s power resides in you, and you can leverage it to subdue negative situations. Despite this, unbelief can hinder the power of God from flowing through His word in your mouth.

It is possible to be a Christian and be tormented by the spirit of doubt and unbelief. What this spirit does is that it undermines the power of God’s word in your heart and makes you feel that the word of God is ordinary. It also makes you begin to think that God’s word is not true, thereby filling your heart with uncertainty. If the spirit of doubt and unbelief is tormenting you, I pray that it will leave you right now, in Jesus’ name.

Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter in Mark 5:35-43 with His word. When He got to his house, He drove out those who were weeping and commanded the dead girl to arise. Peter followed the same pattern when God used him to raise Dorcas in Acts 9:36-42; he sent the mourners out of the house and commanded the dead woman to arise.

Beloved, there is no limit to what you can achieve when you proclaim God’s word in faith. As Jesus said in today’s Bible reading, nothing shall be impossible to you if you speak the word of God in faith without any doubt or unbelief, God wants you to believe His word and act upon it. He wants you to go to places where there are hopeless cases so He can show the world that there is still hope through you. He wants to use you mightily and shine His light through you so that He will be glorified (Matthew 5:16). However, you must learn to trust in His word completely and proclaim it boldly over every situation you encounter. May you be a conduit of God’s mighty power everywhere you go henceforth, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 18 May 2026 KEY POINT

Doubt and unbelief undermine the power of God’s word, making it ineffective in a Christian’s mouth.

Open Heaven 18 May 2026 HYMN 3 – Ancient Words

1 Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world
They resound with God’s own heart
Oh, let the ancient words impart

Chorus:
Ancient words, ever true
Changing me and changing you
We have come with open hearts
Oh, let the ancient words impart

2 Words of life, words of hope
Give us strength, help us cope
In this world, where e’er we roam
Ancient words will guide us home

3 Holy words of our faith
Handed down to this age
Came to us through sacrifice
Oh, heed the faithful words of Christ

4 Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world
They resound with God’s own heart

Tragedy Strikes as Local Woman Found Dead in Nebraska Town, Community Seeks Answers

In a small Nebraska town, the murder of retired county treasurer Sharron Erickson sent shockwaves through the close-knit community. Her body was discovered in her garage, and soon after, whispers of suspicion began to circulate among the town’s residents.

“People were quick to start blaming one another,” shared Don Clark, a friend of Erickson, during the premiere of Oxygen’s The Killer Among Us. He recalled the accusatory atmosphere, with neighbors saying, “I bet he did it,” or pointing fingers at others.

Colon, a town with just over 100 inhabitants, had always prided itself on its sense of community. However, Erickson’s tragic death shattered this unity, leaving everyone to question their trust in those they thought they knew well.

Host Alan Cumming noted, “The town’s residents, who once supported and protected each other, are now casting wary glances at their neighbors.”

Erickson was a familiar figure in Colon, having dedicated over three decades to the county treasurer’s office, a role that had earned her respect and recognition within the community.

Erickson was well-known in the Colon community after working for more than 30 years for the county treasurer’s office.

“Sharron Erickson had probably the highest standards of anybody that worked at the courthouse,” Clark recalled. “She was always dressed properly, very cordial to people.”

After retiring in 1998, Erickson was enjoying a slower-pace of life at her home along Main Street—a quaint one block hub at the center of town, complete with a post office, bank and restaurant. She even settled into a routine, starting each day by visiting the postmaster to get her mail and then chatting with the employees at the bank.

But on June 30, 2003, when Erickson missed a daily phone call with a relative, the family member reached out to bank employees and asked them to check on the 66-year-old.

What Happened to Sharron Erickson?

With help from the postmaster, who had a key to her home, they discovered Erickson dead, laying in a pool of blood in her stand-alone garage, located just across the street from her house.

“She was wearing what appeared to be like clothes that she would be sleeping in, just like a pajama outfit,” former Saunders County prosecutor and coroner Scott Tingelhoff recalled. “There is a gun that is laying just by her head, which is in a pool of blood and it appears that maybe it’s a self-inflicted gunshot.”

Erickson’s small purse was also found at the scene.

Though it was initially thought to be a suicide, that theory was ruled out after investigators noted that there was no magazine in the gun. Plus, blood smeared on a nearby door couldn’t have been left by Erickson after suffering a fatal gunshot wound.

In addition, the coroner discovered Erickson had been beaten and strangled to death, not shot.

Evidence Suggests Someone Broke into Sharron Erickson’s Home

There were other troubling signs at Erickson’s home. An alarm that she placed on the back door was going off and there was evidence the door had been pried open. Her phone line had also been cut.

In the bedroom, an empty gun holster was sitting on a table.

“It looked like she might have been in bed,” Saunders County Deputy Kyle Couglin explained,“and she might have taken the gun out of the holster and left in a hurry.”

Investigators believed the attack likely started in Erickson’s home and, at some point, she fled to the garage across the street to try to escape, but was confronted and killed.

“Sharron didn’t keep a large amount of cash or any particular valuables in her home,” Saunders County Det. Kevin Stukenholtz said. “We discovered there was cash in her purse, so the assailant who was trying to get into the home, it wasn’t clear to us what they were going in there for.”

Investigators Talk to Possible Suspects in Sharron Erickson’s Murder

As investigators tried to piece together the shocking crime, they learned that she was not one to shy away from conflict. She had repeatedly gotten into arguments with her next door neighbor, a trucker. However, he was ruled out after police verified that he’d been out of town the night of the attack.

They also spoke to James Marrs, a 25-year-old farm hand who lived with his family just behind Erickson’s property. Marrs was known to get into trouble from time to time, but he told detectives that on the night Erickson was killed he’d been out at a bar and then went to a friend’s house before returning home—a claim that his friend and mom verified.

Investigators also questioned the postmaster, who had a close relationship with Erickson, after he seemed to be inserting himself into the investigation, but he denied having any involvement in her death.

DNA Evidence Leads to Sharron Erickson’s Killer

The case seemed to hit a standstill until DNA swab results revealed that Erickson had also been sexually assaulted before her death. Authorities sent the results off to a lab in Omaha, hoping to get a DNA profile of their killer.

“Once we determined that there was semen located, and anytime you see a strangulation, it becomes more personal,” Tingelhoff said. “You’re up close with somebody and you’re in contact with them. We were able to focus on narrowing down who would be personally associated with Sharron.”

However, after the DNA profile of the semen was run through a law enforcement database, no match was found.

Then, in April 2004, investigators learned that Marrs’ friend may have been lying about the farm hand’s whereabouts on the night of the murder.

Marrs agreed to submit a DNA swab, which ultimately matched to he sample left at the crime scene.

According to Stukenholtz, “The DNA hit was enough to arrest him.”

Who Killed Sharron Erickson?

Once in custody, Marrs confessed that on the night of the murder he’d been drinking and doing cocaine at a bar in Wahoo. After coming home, he decided he wanted to steal some cash and went to Erickson’s home, where he cut the phone line and then forced his way inside—only to be confronted by Erickson.

“Her gun was not loaded,” Tingelhoff said. “She probably brandished the weapon to scare James.”

But when she didn’t fire the weapon, Marrs started to beat her. When she escaped and ran for her garage, he followed her there and killed her.

“Everything he was saying fit the entire aspect that we’d investigated,” Stukenholtz recalled, “but he would not admit to the sexual assault and almost started to shut down in his confession when I went to that.”

Prosecutors hit a stumbling block in the case when Marrs’ confession was suppressed, but Marrs ultimately agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder in August 2025 on what would have been Erickson’s 69th birthday.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Now decades later, investigators say Erickson’s murder transformed the once quiet community of Colon.

“I think people start wondering do I really know that person?” Tinglehoff said. “And not specifically just Mr. Marrs. Do I really know my neighbor and are they capable of something?”

Rhapsody Of Realities 18 May 2026: Spiritual Discernment In Leadership

Rhapsody Of Realities 18 May 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Spiritual Discernment In Leadership

TOPIC: Spiritual Discernment In Leadership (Rhapsody of Realities 18 May 2026)

And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had enquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom (2 Samuel 16:23).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Scripture repeatedly warns us about the danger of bad counsel. The Bible reveals this in the story of Ahithophel, a man whose counsel carried such weight that it was regarded as though one had inquired at the oracle of God (2 Samuel 16:23).

He was esteemed, trusted and relied upon, not only by David but later also by Absalom. Yet, despite his reputation, he became a part of an evil conspiracy. When Absalom rebelled against his father, David, the conspiracy gained strength, and the people increased continually with Absalom (2 Samuel 15:12). In the midst of that uprising, Ahithophel joined himself to Absalom.

Then the report reached David: “…Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom…” (2 Samuel 15:31). The presence of Ahithophel in Absalom’s camp meant strategic advantage, because his counsel was powerful, persuasive and influential. But David didn’t panic or try to outmanoeuvre Ahithophel by human strategy. He simply prayed, “…O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness” (2 Samuel 15:31).

That prayer reveals a vital truth: no matter how intelligent a counsel appears, if it’s aligned against God’s purpose, it can be defeated. This is why discernment is essential for leaders. Not every voice around leaders is sent to help. Some counsellors present themselves as wise, but their intent is to mislead, divide and destroy.

They push out the good, speak against the righteous, and attempt to plant ideas that weaken what God is building. But they’re not beyond the reach of divine judgment. The Lord can expose them, silence them and turn their wisdom into foolishness.

As Christians, we must understand and take advantage of our authority in Christ to affect nations and their leaders, families and destinies. Therefore, always pray with understanding, that those in authority may be guided by truth, surrounded by righteous counsel, and strengthened to fulfil God’s purpose. Pray that the Spirit of God will continually grant them discernment to identify and prevail over deceptive agendas, and walk in the wisdom of God. Praise God!

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the wisdom of your Spirit at work in me and in your Church. I pray for leaders in nations and institutions, that they be surrounded with righteous counsel and guided by truth. Every deceptive influence is exposed, and every counsel that opposes your purpose is turned into foolishness. Your wisdom prevails, and your will is established in the earth, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Discover These 5 Must-Watch Films If You Loved “Send Help

If you’ve ever chuckled at the Internet’s cheeky phrase “I support women’s rights and I also support women’s wrongs,” then the film “Send Help” will be right up your alley. Helmed by horror aficionado Sam Raimi, this 2026 release stars Rachel McAdams, who reunites with Raimi after he felt her talents were underutilized in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” “Send Help” is a thrilling adventure from start to finish, featuring McAdams delivering yet another stellar performance.

The story begins with McAdams’ character, Linda Liddle, languishing in a monotonous corporate role, yearning for a promotion. Her aspirations are dashed by Bradley Preston (played by Dylan O’Brien), who inherited the company from her former boss and now offers Linda a business trip on a private jet as a consolation. When the jet crashes on an isolated island, Bradley finds himself clueless about basic survival skills. In contrast, Linda, an avid “Survivor” fan with an audition tape for the reality show, is well-prepared for the challenge. Bradley soon realizes that Linda’s expertise is his only ticket to survival on the island.

“Send Help” is packed with unexpected twists that will keep you glued to the screen. Once you’ve seen it, you might wonder what to watch next. If you can handle a thrilling narrative filled with suspense and a female lead who takes charge, we’ve got some recommendations. For those in search of a gripping tale featuring a woman breaking bad for the right reasons, these suggestions are for you.

The 2019 horror-comedy “Ready or Not,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, got its follow-up with “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” in 2026. However, the original remains a must-see. The film stars Samara Weaving as Grace MacCaullay, who, after a challenging upbringing in the foster care system, is set to marry her dream partner, Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien), and join his affluent family. What seems idyllic soon turns sinister when, post-wedding ceremony, Grace learns of a family initiation ritual. The Le Domas clan, bound by a pact with a mysterious entity known as “Le Bail,” must draw a game from Le Bail’s puzzle box. Grace’s selection of “hide and seek” sends shockwaves through the family.

The ensuing deadly hide-and-seek game is unlike anything you’ve seen on screen, with stellar performances by Weaving, O’Brien, Adam Brody (as Alex’s inebriated brother Daniel), and Andie MacDowell (as Alex’s scheming mother Becky). You’ll be captivated from start to finish by this intense narrative. Grace stands out as one of the most memorable “final girls” in horror cinema, and you can easily imagine her and Linda hitting it off if their paths ever crossed.

Ready or Not

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s 2019 horror comedy “Ready or Not” got a pretty solid sequel in 2026 — aptly titled “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” — but we’re going with the original for this list, because it’s absolutely perfect. After a tough life growing up in the foster system, Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving) is ready to marry the man of her dreams, Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien), and become a part of the storied and wealthy Le Domas family. Everything seems absolutely dreamy until, after the ceremony, Grace gathers with the Le Domases and learns that they have a ritual to welcome new members of the family. Because the family, as they explain to Grace, once made a deal with a figure known only as “Le Bail,” they have to choose an option from Le Bail’s puzzle box and play that game; Grace draws “hide and seek,” sending many members of the Le Domas clan into shock.

What follows next is one of the deadliest games of hide and seek you’ll ever see depicted on screen, and with outstanding performances from Weaving, O’Brien, Adam Brody (who plays Alex’s drunken and lecherous brother Daniel), and Andie MacDowell (who plays Alex’s conniving mother Becky), you’ll be riveted from beginning to end. Grace is one of the best “final girls” in horror movie history, and it’s easy to imagine that she and Linda would get along swimmingly if the two ever met somehow.

The Shallows

At the end of the day, “Send Help” is a survival movie, and if that aspect really spoke to you, we definitely recommend “The Shallows.” After projects like “House of Wax” and “Orphan,” director Jaume Collet-Serra turned his attention to shark-infested waters with this 2016 horror movie, which stars Blake Lively as Nancy Adams. When we first meet Nancy, she’s a medical student who’s thinking about abandoning her studies while grieving the loss of her mother; trying to connect with the memories of her mom, Nancy travels to a remote Mexico beach where her mother spent time while pregnant. After surfing and enjoying the waves safely, Nancy decides to go out one last time and discovers the body of a dead whale … and while she’s distracted, she’s attacked by a great white shark.

That whale corpse ends up being a lifeline for Nancy as, stranded in the middle of the ocean as her surfboard floats away, she has to get to a single rock for safety and avoid further injuries from the shark. (She also uses items like the surfboard’s broken cord and her own jewelry to tend to the injuries she does have.) Nancy’s story is harrowing, terrifying, and suspenseful, but she’s resourceful and smart — just like Linda Liddle in “Send Help.”

Triangle of Sadness

Some naysayers might go so far as to say that “Send Help” owes a creative debt of gratitude to the 2022 film “Triangle of Sadness,” in that an unexpected marooning in a remote location (that also turns out to be less remote than was originally assumed) turns power dynamics among the marooned parties on their head. We’d argue that there are plenty of differences between “Send Help” and “Triangle of Sadness,” but considering you’re going to need a very strong stomach for both of these movies, they’ll definitely go together nicely.

Written and directed by the Swedish auteur Ruben Östlund (marking his first English-language feature film), “Triangle of Sadness,” which received nominations for best director, best original screenplay, and best picture at the 95th Academy Awards, centers on a luxury cruise that goes horribly, horribly wrong. With a bunch of influencers and extremely wealthy people on board the superyacht, an extravagant dinner goes sideways — somewhat literally — when a storm strikes the boat, sending everyone careening and puking as the ship rocks to and fro. (Seriously, if you have emetophobia, do not watch “Triangle of Sadness.”)

When the ship wrecks, the survivors — including Abigail (Dolly de Leon), the superyacht’s toilet manager — find themselves on a deserted beach, and the power shifts from the wealthy passengers over to Abigail, the only one who knows how to survive. Whether or not “Send Help” actually owes a debt to “Triangle of Sadness” is debatable, but they’re both very much worth watching.

Cast Away

A desert island classic, “Cast Away” definitely walked so that “Send Help” can run. This 2000 film, made by Robert Zemeckis, reunites the director with his “Forrest Gump” star Tom Hanks with Hanks playing Chuck Noland, who works for FedEx as a systems analyst. Amidst strife with his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt), Chuck is weirdly relieved to be sent to deal with a situation in far-flung Malaysia … until his cargo plane crashes in the ocean and Chuck becomes the only survivor. Thanks to floating FedEx debris, Chuck is able to make it to unknown shores — though he also finds the body of one of the pilots in the process — and from that point on, his only concern is survival.

What most people remember about “Cast Away” is Wilson, the volley ball adorned with a handprint who becomes Chuck’s only friend while he’s marooned alone … but truthfully, all the Wilson jokes in the world won’t change that this movie is a master class in acting from Hanks. As the only lead actor for most of the run time of “Cast Away,” Hanks holds down the fort and keeps the movie’s momentum going, creating an endlessly watchable, absolutely fascinating, and fully immersive story as we watch Chuck hang out on this island for a whopping four years and teach himself to fish, hunt, and survive. “Send Help” never directly references “Cast Away,” but this Hanks-Zemeckis collaboration was, without question, a major inspiration for Sam Raimi’s horror romp.

Midsommar

“Midsommar” might not be set on a desert island, but it does, like “Send Help,” feature an intrepid heroine in an unfamiliar environment far from home defeating terrible men who get in her way through some fairly gruesome tactics. (We mean this as a compliment, to be clear). This 2019 movie from horror master Ari Aster casts Florence Pugh, in one of the roles that helped put her firmly on the map as a star to watch, as Dani, a young woman who recently suffered a massive loss. Grieving and feeling stuck, Dani decides to tag along with her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) — who pointedly does not want her to do that — on a trip to Sweden alongside Christian’s friends Mark and Josh (MCU star Will Poulter and “The Good Place” standout William Jackson Harper) to experience a midsummer festival.

When the gang arrives in Sweden, they start noticing that the commune throwing the festival is … strange, to say the least — and as they uncover more secrets, Mark, Christian, Dani, and Josh start to worry that they might be in danger. Without spoiling anything, though, Dani turns out just fine; in fact, she earns the title of May Queen, which is not good for Christian’s bottom line. “Midsommar” is gut-wrenching, full of suspense, and a movie that’ll have you rooting for the female protagonist as she gives a terrible man exactly the fate he deserves.

As for “Send Help,” it’s streaming on Hulu and Disney+ now.
