Trump Kicks Off China Visit, Asserts Independence on Iran Issue

0

In brief

  • US president Donald Trump will arrive in China on Wednesday.
  • Talks with Chinese president Xi Jinping will include US arms sales to Taiwan.

Donald Trump’s scheduled arrival in Beijing on Wednesday marks the first visit by a U.S. president to China in almost ten years. His trip aims to bolster trade ties, even as issues regarding Taiwan and Iran loom.

Trump departed from Washington D.C. on Wednesday after a delay caused by his focus on war efforts. He mentioned having a “long discussion” planned with Chinese President Xi Jinping, particularly concerning Iran, a nation whose oil sales to China continue despite U.S. sanctions.

However, Trump downplayed any conflicts over Iran, stating that Xi has been “relatively good, to be honest.”

Addressing reporters before leaving the White House, Trump expressed confidence about the Iran situation: “We don’t need any help with Iran. We’ll succeed one way or another, through peaceful means or otherwise.”

This week’s visit—the first since Trump’s 2017 trip—features crucial discussions with Xi on Friday and Saturday. The agenda includes a state banquet and a tea reception, making for a busy schedule.

Trump said on Tuesday that he would speak to Xi about US arms sales to Taiwan, the self-governing island claimed by China — a departure from historic US insistence that it will not consult China on its support to the island.

China’s controls on rare earth exports and the countries’ raucous trade relationship are among the topics expected to be taken up by the heads of the world’s top two economies.

The tense buildup to the superpower summit was already visible on Wednesday on the streets of Beijing, with police monitoring major intersections and checking the ID cards of passengers on the metro, Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalists saw.

“It’s definitely a big deal,” said Wen Wen, a 24-year-old woman travelling from the eastern city of Nanjing, when asked by AFP about Trump’s visit.

“Some progress will certainly be made,” she said, noting that she hopes China and the United States can ensure “lasting peace” despite “recent instability in the global situation”.

Trade ties between China and the US have been fraught in recent years. The two sides are currently maintaining a one-year truce in their tariff war reached at Trump and Xi’s last meeting in South Korea in October.

China’s major surplus in trade with the United States has long irritated Trump, who slapped tariffs on the country’s goods during his first term in office.

Trump will be accompanied in China by a large group of top US business executives, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple’s Tim Cook, the White House has said.

The highly anticipated summit comes at an uncertain time for China’s economy, which has struggled in recent years with sluggish domestic spending and a protracted debt crisis in the once-booming property sector.

‘Responsibilities as major powers’

For Li Jiahao, 30, who manages a Beijing karaoke bar, the summit will not necessarily solve all problems in China-US relations — though he is hoping for “positive results”.

“Coming here and actually resolving the issues are two different things,” he told AFP.

“China and the United States both have responsibilities as major powers,” he said, adding that “only through friendship can we achieve mutual development and become stronger”.

The war in Iran — launched by the United States and Israel on 28 February — has presented new challenges in the already-complicated relationship between China and the US.

The US Treasury Department on Monday sanctioned 12 individuals and entities — including several based in Hong Kong — it said facilitated the sale and shipment of Iranian oil to China.

Asked about the latest moves on Wednesday, Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for Beijing’s foreign ministry, said that “China firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions”.

Trump’s trip will be closely scrutinised in Taiwan for any sign of weakening US support.

Trump insisted on Tuesday that his personal relationship with Xi would prevent a Chinese invasion of the island.

“I think we’ll be fine. I have a very good relationship with President Xi. He knows I don’t want that to happen.”

Mother Criticizes Congresswoman’s Reply to Her 10-Year-Old Son’s Letter

0

A North Carolina congresswoman has come under fire for what a mother describes as a “disrespectful” and “hostile” reply to her 10-year-old son’s letter about electric vehicles. The boy’s mother expressed her outrage over the response.

Emily Mango, 42, took to social media to share the “disturbing letter” that Representative Virginia Foxx sent in response to her son’s school project.

Christian, a fourth-grade student at Canterbury School in Greensboro, had penned a persuasive essay urging the 82-year-old representative to consider supporting tax incentives for electric vehicles.

“He did his research, cited his sources, and presented strong arguments in his essay, which was purely educational and non-political. He was proud of his work,” Mango explained.

Mango noted that Christian mailed his essay to Foxx in a school envelope back in April, clearly indicating it was written by a young student.

Several weeks later, his mom said Foxx wrote a response to Christian ‘in a disrespectful, hostile and unkind tone,’ accusing him of being ‘indoctrinated’ by his teachers at the Episcopal day school.

Foxx’s Response

Foxx thanked Christian for ‘taking the time to share your thoughts,’ then went on to attack his proposal.

‘What many folks do not realize is that the money that “comes from” the federal government actually comes from ordinary citizens who pay taxes to support that government,’ Foxx wrote.

‘Therefore, your request that “the federal government should give a $5,000 tax rebate for all new electric car purchases” means that the federal government must take that money out of the pockets of hardworking people who may not have the means to buy an electric vehicle in the first place.’

She included links to six articles about climate change, including two pieces from the Wall Street Journal editorial board and others from Fox News, National Review and The Washington Times.

Foxx told the boy, ‘YOU and your classmates will be responsible’ for paying down the national debt, which she believes is far more pressing than climate change.

‘Incidentally, please ask your teacher to explain propaganda to you,’ the Congresswoman wrote.

‘While I will never be able to know, my guess is that your teachers will not give you a good educational experience and help you learn to think, as they are too interested in indoctrinating you. How sad.’

Mother Slams Foxx’s Response

Mango slammed the elderly woman for writing such a harsh rebuke to a child and criticized her for attacking her son’s teachers.

‘Reprehensible response. You crossed a line when you attacked a child and attacked teachers,’ Mango said.

‘You don’t deserve to be on a Committee for Education when you talk to children like this and think so lowly of teachers. No wonder NC is 50th in education funding level under your “leadership.”‘

Foxx, who has boasted of being ‘consistently ranked’ among the most conservative members of the North Carolina Congressional Delegation, was first elected to Congress in 2004.

She is running for re-election this year and was previously endorsed by Donald Trump.

Foxx has an Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching/higher education from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, according to her biography.

She previously taught at a local community college and Appalachian State University and later became president of Mayland Community College. Fox also served 12 years on the Watauga County Board of Education.

Online Backlash

Given her background in education, Foxx’s response to Christian sparked backlash online.

‘Wow! Just wow! Especially that she is a former educator herself! Talk about “how sad.” That is very disturbing how she responded. I am very sorry,’ one person wrote on Facebook.

‘This is an unacceptable way to speak to a constituent, let alone a child. We have to hold people accountable, especially those stated to represent us. What a misguided woman,’ added a second person.

‘She was a professor of education. SHE TAUGHT THE TEACHERS!!’ a third person wrote on Instagram.

Some people came to Foxx’s defense and appreciated that she wrote the boy a response.

‘She’s kind of right though. She gave a thoughtful, mature response to the kid and everyone’s acting like she did something so bad. At least sure didn’t flat out ignore him,’ one person wrote.

The Daily Mail contacted Foxx, Mango and the Canterbury School for comment.

At 68, the renowned actress concluded the heartfelt message with her signature alongside the names of her three sons: Roan, 25, Laird, 21, and Quinn, 19.

The sad news comes just over a year after their mother Dorothy Stone passed away at the age of 91 in March 2025.

At that time, Stone shared with her fans that her mother had been long been suffering after having several strokes.

The actress looked after her mother in her Beverly Hills mansion during her final years.

Stone revealed that her mother’s final words to her were, ‘You talk too much, you make me want to commit suicide’ and while people in the room laughed, it was a ‘hard one to go out on.’

Despite their ‘tough’ relationship, the star credited her mother with teaching her to ‘stand on her own two feet.’

And it has been three years since her brother Patrick Stone died in February 2023 at age 57 from heart disease.

The death occurred 18 months after his 11-month-old son, River, died from organ failure.

Patrick passed away in Pennsylvania on Super Bowl Sunday after suffering a heart attack, which his wife Tasha described as his heart ‘being ripped out of my chest’ following their son’s death.

Sharon confirmed the passing on social media as she expressed her extreme heartache over the sudden loss. She called her sibling Patrick a ‘gentle soul’ with a ‘wonderful sense of humor.’

Stone’s father, Joseph William Stone II, died at the age of 81 in 2009.

The Casino actress still has her sister Kelly Stone, 65, who works on the charity Planet Hope.

The performer wrote extensively about her family and the struggles they faced when she grew up in rural Pennsylvania.

Stone described their poverty, physical abuse and sexual abuse that she and her siblings experienced.

The health emergency left her with only a one percent chance of living. It took her years to learn how to walk and talk properly again, she said in her 2021 biography The Beauty Of Living Twice.

Stone is back on TV with a role in Euphoria opposite Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi.

Transform Your Midsection: 8-Minute Standing Workout Outperforms Gym Machines for Over-50s

Here’s an 8-minute standing workout designed by a trainer to tackle midsection fat for those over 50.

Achieving a toned midsection after hitting 50 is most effective when exercises are straightforward, repeatable, and gentle on the joints. While gym equipment can be beneficial, it often provides so much support that your core doesn’t engage as it would during everyday activities. Standing exercises shift this dynamic, requiring your abs to stabilize, twist, balance, and maintain posture as the rest of your body is in motion.

With years of experience coaching adults to develop practical strength, I’ve discovered that core exercises are more beneficial when they teach your body to stabilize from the feet up. Your abdominal muscles aren’t isolated when you’re walking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, gardening, playing pickleball, or rising from a chair. Instead, they collaborate with your hips, glutes, shoulders, and back to ensure strength, stability, and efficiency.

This streamlined 8-minute standing routine involves four exercises, each performed for 40 seconds, followed by a 20-second rest between them. Completing the circuit twice is the goal. Maintain a controlled and steady pace, ensuring your core is engaged, your heart rate increases, and your posture remains impeccable throughout the session.

This 8-minute standing routine keeps the setup simple. You’ll perform four exercises for 40 seconds each, rest for 20 seconds between moves, and repeat the circuit for two total rounds. The pace should feel controlled and steady. You want to feel your core working, your heart rate climbing, and your posture staying sharp from start to finish.

You won’t spot-reduce abdominal fat with a single workout, but you can strengthen the muscles around your waist, increase total-body movement, and build consistency that supports fat loss over time. After 50, that combination matters far more than bouncing between complicated machines or long workouts that never become part of your week.

The 8-Minute Standing Core Routine

What you need: Just your bodyweight. Add a light dumbbell only after you can control every rep.

How to do it: Perform each exercise for 40 seconds, then rest or transition for 20 seconds. Complete all four moves, then repeat the same circuit one more time.

Round 1

  1. Cross-Body Knee Drive
  2. Squat to Rotation
  3. Standing Wood Chop
  4. Fast Feet With Core Brace

Round 2

  1. Cross-Body Knee Drive
  2. Squat to Rotation
  3. Standing Wood Chop
  4. Fast Feet With Core Brace

Cross-Body Knee Drive

Cross-body knee drives train your abs through rotation while giving the routine an athletic feel. This move targets your obliques, raises your heart rate, and helps improve how your upper and lower body work together. Keep the reps crisp rather than rushed, and think about pulling your ribs toward your opposite hip each time your knee comes across.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, abs, hip flexors, glutes, shoulders

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Reach both hands up toward your right side.
  3. Brace your abs.
  4. Drive your left knee up and across your body.
  5. Pull your hands down toward that knee.
  6. Return to the starting position and repeat.
  7. Work for 20 seconds, then switch sides.

Recommended Time: Perform for 40 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds.

Form Tip: Pull through your core instead of swinging your arms. The movement should feel strong through your waist, not loose through your shoulders.

Squat to Rotation

Squat-to-rotation brings your legs into the workout, helping you get more done in less time. Your lower body drives the strength portion, while the turn at the top challenges your abs to control rotation. This is a great move for training your core, as it mirrors how your body moves in daily life, where it rarely moves in a straight line.

Muscles Trained: Quads, glutes, abs, obliques, upper back

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Brace your abs and keep your chest tall.
  3. Lower into a comfortable squat.
  4. Push through your feet to stand.
  5. Rotate your torso to one side as you reach across your body.
  6. Return to center and repeat, alternating sides each rep.

Recommended Time: Perform for 40 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds.

Form Tip: Let your hips and feet turn slightly as you rotate. That keeps the motion smoother and reduces stress on your lower back.

Standing Wood Chop

The standing wood chop is one of the most useful core exercises you can do without getting on the floor. The diagonal pattern trains your abs and obliques to create and control movement across your body. It also feels natural because your body uses the same cross-body pattern when walking, lifting, carrying, and engaging in sports.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, abs, shoulders, lats, glutes, hips

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Clasp your hands together near one hip.
  3. Brace your abs.
  4. Sweep your hands diagonally across your body toward the opposite shoulder.
  5. Control the motion back to the starting position.
  6. Work for 20 seconds, then switch sides.

Recommended Time: Perform for 40 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds.

Form Tip: Move your hips and upper back together. Avoid twisting only through your lower spine.

Fast Feet With Core Brace

Fast feet give this routine a conditioning finish while keeping your core under tension. The goal is to move quickly while staying controlled. Your abs should feel like they’re holding your posture in place as your feet move underneath you.

Muscles Trained: Abs, calves, quads, glutes, hip flexors

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Bend your knees slightly.
  3. Keep your chest tall and brace your abs.
  4. Move your feet quickly in place.
  5. Keep your steps small, light, and controlled.
  6. Slow down if your posture starts to drop.

Recommended Time: Perform for 40 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds, then repeat the circuit or finish your workout.

Form Tip: Stay light on your feet. Quiet steps usually mean better control and better posture.

The Best Tips for Firming Abdominal Fat After 50

Firming your midsection after 50 comes down to making the routine work harder without making it harder to stick with. The exercises matter, but how you perform them and how consistently you repeat them will drive most of the progress. Keep your reps controlled, stay tall through your posture, and treat each movement like core training first, not just a way to break a sweat. When you combine that focus with regular walking, smart strength work, and a few simple nutrition habits, this 8-minute routine becomes a useful part of a much bigger plan.

  • Focus on consistency before intensity. An 8-minute routine works best when you can repeat it often. Start with three days per week, then build toward four or five days as your body adapts.
  • Brace before you move. Before each rep, tighten your abs as if you’re about to cough. This helps your core stabilize your spine before your arms, legs, or hips start moving.
  • Move with control. Standing core exercises lose their value when you rush through them. Keep each rep smooth, especially during the rotation-based moves.
  • Use your full body. Your midsection firms up better when your legs, hips, glutes, back, and shoulders contribute. That’s why standing exercises often feel more productive than machine-based ab work.
  • Keep your posture tall. Think about stacking your ribs over your hips. This position helps your abs do their job and keeps your lower back from taking over.
  • Pair this routine with walking. A short standing core workout, plus daily walking, creates a strong one-two punch for fat loss, conditioning, and improved movement after 50.
  • Strength train a few times per week. Add two to three weekly strength workouts if you can. Building muscle helps support metabolism, joint health, and long-term changes in body composition.
  • Progress gradually. Once the routine feels manageable, add a light dumbbell to the wood chop, slow down the squat-to-rotation, or complete a second 8-minute block. Small progressions keep the routine effective without turning it into a grind.

Murder Conviction of Alex Murdaugh Overturned in Stunning Legal Development

0

In a dramatic turn of events, Alex Murdaugh, the fallen heir of a once-powerful legal dynasty, is set to face a new trial for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul. This decision comes after a pivotal ruling from South Carolina’s highest court.

On Wednesday, the South Carolina Supreme Court revealed that all five justices had reached a unanimous decision to overturn Murdaugh’s previous conviction. The June 2021 murder trial had been compromised due to allegations of jury tampering by court clerk Becky Hill.

The justices, in their 5-0 decision, sharply criticized Hill’s conduct. They noted that she had “egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility” during his March 2023 trial, attempting to sway the jury towards a guilty verdict while she was working on a book about the case.

“Despite the considerable time, resources, and effort invested in this lengthy trial, we are compelled to overturn the denial of Murdaugh’s request for a new trial,” the justices stated. This decision was based on Hill’s inappropriate influence on the jury, necessitating a retrial.

The court highlighted that Hill, serving as the Colleton County Clerk of Court, compromised Murdaugh’s credibility and defense, leading to a presumption of prejudice that the State could not counter.

‘As noted at the outset, Hill’s shocking jury interference was accomplished outside the presence and knowledge of the outstanding trial judge and superbly competent and professional counsel for the State and the defense. We are accordingly constrained to reverse the post-trial court’s denial of Murdaugh’s motion and remand for a new trial consistent with this opinion.’

Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 of the June 7, 2021 slayings of Maggie, 52, and younger son, Paul, 22, in a high-profile trial watched gavel-to-gavel across the country.

The tale of Murdaugh’s spectacular fall from grace is one that has captivated the public for years.

This was a man who had it all, born into a powerful, wealthy family that had dominated the justice system in South Carolina’s Lowcountry for more than a century.

When Maggie and Paul were murdered, his life and reputation began to unravel.

The mother and son were shot dead at the dog kennels on the powerful legal family’s sprawling 17,000-acre Moselle estate in Islandton, South Carolina, on the night of June 7, 2022.

Murdaugh called 911 claiming to have found his loved ones’ bodies.

Following the slayings, other mysterious deaths tied to the prominent family fell under the spotlight, and his multi-million-dollar fraud schemes came to fore.

Murdaugh even allegedly tried to hire a hitman, his distant cousin Curtis ‘Cousin Eddie’ Smith, and stage his own shooting months after the family killings.

Finally, the double life of the prominent attorney was finally laid bare, culminating in his arrest for his wife and son’s murders.

During a high-profile six-week trial, jurors heard how Murdaugh’s life was imploding in the lead-up to the murders as his multi-million-dollar fraud schemes were about to be exposed.

Damning cell phone evidence captured by his murdered son in the moments before his death proved that Murdaugh had lied about his alibi that night.

Murdaugh had claimed he never went to the dog kennels with his wife and son that night.

During the trial, jurors were shown a cellphone video of a dog captured by Paul minutes before the final activity on the phone. In the background, his father’s distinctive voice could be heard, placing Murdaugh at the crime scene.

Murdaugh took the stand and confessed to lying about his alibi on the night of the murders. He also confessed to stealing millions from law firm clients but insisted he did not kill his wife and son.

The jury found him guilty of the murders and sentenced him to life in prison.

Since then, Murdaugh has maintained his innocence of the murders and continued to fight his conviction ever since.

His fight for a retrial was chiefly based on allegations that Hill, the Colleton County Clerk of Court during his high-profile trial, tampered with the jury.

Hill, who was in charge of managing the jury and read out the guilty verdict to the court, pleaded guilty in December to four charges connected to the case: obstruction of justice, perjury, and two counts of misconduct in office.

The 58-year-old admitted to showing sealed court exhibits including graphic crime scene photos to a reporter during the trial and then lying about it. She also admitted to taking bonuses and promoting a tell-all book about the trial through her public office.

Prosecutors however argued that Hill’s actions did not sway the outcome of the case because the evidence against him was overwhelming and so his conviction should still stand.

During a hearing before the South Carolina Supreme Court in February, the five justices appeared to be swaying in favor of Murdaugh.

Prosecutors had investigated allegations of jury tampering against Hill after three jurors or alternates claimed she may have been trying to influence them, but found there was not the evidence to prove charges.

Hill, who resigned in disgrace in 2024, was handed three years’ probation.

In their fight for a new trial, Murdaugh’s legal team argued that Hill tried to influence the jury to return a guilty verdict because she was writing a book about the trial.

Murdaugh’s team also argued the jury should not have been able to hear about Murdaugh’s financial crimes.

During the murder trial, prosecutors presented a motive that the legal dynasty heir killed his wife and son in a bid to salvage his crumbling finances and reputation.

At the time, Murdaugh was awaiting trial on a string of financial fraud charges. When he took the stand to testify in his defense, he sensationally confessed to stealing millions from his law firm and legal clients – but insisted he was innocent of the murders.

In April 2024, Murdaugh was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to 22 federal financial crimes. He was previously sentenced to 27 years on similar state charges, with the two sentences running concurrently.

Shocking Reversal: South Carolina Supreme Court Overturns Alex Murdaugh’s Double Murder Conviction

In a significant turn of events, the South Carolina Supreme Court has nullified the murder conviction of Alex Murdaugh, who was found guilty in March 2023 of the double homicide of his wife and son. The court’s decision to order a retrial stems from concerns over the conduct of Mary Rebecca “Becky” Hill, the court clerk in Colleton County, who was found to have exerted “improper external influences” during the original proceedings.

Murdaugh, who was convicted of the June 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul, was present during a hearing on January 16, 2024, at the Richland County Judicial Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Federal prosecutors have accused Murdaugh of failing to disclose the location of $6 million he allegedly embezzled and are questioning whether an unnamed attorney was involved in these financial crimes. They are seeking to revoke a plea agreement related to these federal charges, as indicated in court documents.

The decision from the state’s highest court was unanimous, reflecting the gravity of the concerns raised. “Despite the considerable resources invested in this protracted trial, we are compelled to overturn the denial of Murdaugh’s request for a retrial,” the justices stated. “This decision is due to Hill’s inappropriate influence on the jury, necessitating a new trial.”

The state supreme court voted unanimously on the decision.

“Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial,” their ruling said.

A post-trial court found that Hill “made improper comments to the jurors on the day Murdaugh testified, e.g., ‘this is an important day’ or ‘this is an epic day’ and that they should watch Murdaugh’s body language, on the day of he testified in his own defense.

Hill pleaded guilty to four charges — obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits and then lying about it, plus two counts of misconduct in office for taking bonuses and promoting a book she wrote on the trial through her public office — in December.

Murdaugh was sentenced in 2023 to two consecutive life sentences for murdering his wife and son. He is also serving an additional 40 years in prison for his financial crimes and remains in custody at a maximum-security prison in South Carolina.

Teen Struck by Car While Escaping Prom Night Shooting: ‘A Night Turned Tragic

A terrifying incident unfolded for a teenage girl, who was struck by a car while desperately fleeing a mass shooting at her prom party, as reported by police and family members.

Jordyn Williams, a 17-year-old junior attending Muskegon High School, suffered multiple fractures and was rendered unconscious while escaping gunfire that erupted shortly before midnight on Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Fruitport, a small town located roughly 30 miles from Grand Rapids. The shooting resulted in four people being injured.

Williams, among two individuals hit by vehicles amidst the pandemonium, is currently in intensive care, awaiting surgery according to her family.

“The evening went from enchanting to horrifying,” her parents expressed on a GoFundMe page. “Our daughter began the night full of excitement, looking stunning and all set for her prom. That memorable evening turned into a nightmare with gunshots breaking out at the high school prom after-party.”

“In her frantic escape, she was tragically struck by a car, leaving her unconscious with numerous injuries and broken bones. Now, I remain by her bedside, witnessing her struggle for recovery with tubes inserted for her breathing. Yet, I am thankful she is stable and showing signs of improvement,” they shared.

Four people were shot at the party and rushed to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Williams’ father, Andre Williams, told Fox 17 that his son told him his daughter had been severely injured trying to escape the carnage.

“From what I understand, there was several sets of shots. She kind of ducked down, from what I was told. And then when the second set of shots happened, she just darted off and tried to run away,” Williams said.

The second person struck by a vehicle and the four shooting victims have not been identified.

Fruitport Police said the shooting started as a dispute between two or more people, and that multiple people fired guns.

Police had not announced any arrests as of Wednesday morning.

The Williamses are raising money to help cover medical expenses and make their home wheelchair-accessible once she’s discharged from the hospital.

The Michigan VFW shooting came just hours after a 17-year-old was shot and killed taking pre-prom pictures at a local park in Tennessee Friday.

Stay Informed: 2026 Federal Budget Unveiled with Live Updates and In-Depth Analysis

Leaders from the disability, multicultural, and Indigenous sectors have voiced their perspectives on the latest budget and its implications for their communities.

In an effort to address labor shortages, the government plans to revamp its permanent migration system, prioritizing migrants who are “better educated,” “higher-skilled,” and younger.

The annual cap for the permanent migration program will remain at 185,000, with more than 70% of these slots allocated to skilled migrants.

The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) expressed relief that migration numbers have not been reduced. However, they remain concerned about how these changes might impact the economy.

“We’re examining this closely. The effectiveness of the policy will largely depend on its implementation,” commented FECCA chair Peter Doukas.

In the area of disability care, the government has confirmed changes in the budget to cut access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in a bid to save almost $38 billion over the next four years.

“Drastic is an appropriate word. I think we are going to see some unprecedented changes with the scheme, including access,” said Cherry Baylosis, chief of policy advocacy and programs at Disability Advocacy Network.

“We can anticipate that there will be a large amount of people exiting the scheme, difficulties accessing the scheme as well, as well as seeing a reduction to plans as well.”

The government is also investing $1.2 billion in First Nations communities and Closing the Gap over five years as part of last night’s budget.

Catherine Liddle, chief executive of SNAICC — the biggest national non-governmental body advocating for Indigenous children — said the budget represented a missed opportunity for Aboriginal children and families.

“I think this budget was flagged as the budget for generation fairness … There’s very little funding dedicated to Aboriginal responses.”

“There were plenty of community-led solutions on the table, and very little commitment at a time when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families and the services that support them are under scrutiny and needing support the most.”
