Achieve Elite Leg Strength with This Wall Sit Challenge for Those Over 60

Enhance your lower body strength and stability by incorporating wall sits into your fitness routine.

Understanding your leg strength is crucial for assessing your overall physical health. Strong legs not only boost your confidence in everyday activities such as climbing stairs, easily transitioning from a seated to a standing position, and maintaining balance, but they are also linked to increased longevity. Robust leg muscles play a vital role in keeping you active and help combat the natural loss of lean muscle mass that occurs with aging.

If you discover that your leg strength isn’t where it should be, don’t worry—there are steps you can take to improve it. To determine your leg strength, we consulted with Leon Veal, a Level Three Personal Trainer and Director of Business Operations at Styrkr. He provided insight into how long you should be able to hold a wall sit at age 60 to qualify as having elite leg strength.

Though it might seem straightforward, the wall sit is an effective exercise for evaluating your lower-body fitness and delivering a significant leg workout. Veal explains that this exercise assesses your isometric strength, which is crucial for maintaining balance, posture, and stability. Successfully holding a wall sit helps build control, reducing the risk of falls and enabling you to live an active, independent life. Furthermore, studies suggest that maintaining a static position like a wall sit for a specific duration can contribute to lowering blood pressure.

Why the Wall Sit Is an Effective Lower-Body Test

While it may seem like a foolproof move, the wall sit is actually a great way to gauge your lower-body fitness while achieving a serious leg burn. According to Veal, this exercise tests your isometric strength, which plays an important role in balance, posture, and stability. Being able to hold a wall sit builds solid control, helping you avoid falls and continue to lead an active, independent life. Additionally, research suggests that holding a fixed position—like a wall sit—for a certain period of time can help lower blood pressure.

The wall sit fires up your glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves—all of which majorly impact mobility and how easily you’re able to perform daily tasks like climbing stairs, getting up from a seated position, and even maintaining an upright posture.

This Wall Sit Hold Time Means Your Leg Strength Is Elite

According to Veal, being able to hold a wall sit for one minute or more while maintaining proper form is a meaningful achievement at any stage of life. That said, if you’re in the 60+ age group and can reach a 90-second-or-more benchmark, that signals your leg strength and endurance is truly “elite” status.

Generally speaking, holding a wall sit for one minute serves as a great benchmark for women, while holding for 90 seconds is a solid goal for men.

How To Do a Wall Sit

Here’s how to do a wall sit with proper form:

  1. Stand tall with your back pressed against a wall and arms extended ahead of you.
  2. Slide down until your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle as if you’re sitting in a chair.
  3. Hold the position for the prescribed amount of time.

South Carolina Lawmakers Plan Redistricting Ahead of August Congressional Primary

In Columbia, South Carolina, key legislative activities are on the docket as state lawmakers prepare to tackle two significant election-related proposals this Tuesday. A central focus is the plan to revise the state’s congressional district maps, alongside a proposal to reschedule this year’s congressional primaries to a later date in the summer.

The House Judiciary Constitutional Laws Subcommittee is set to review these proposals in a morning session, as the legislative session advances toward its conclusion with limited time remaining.

The first proposal, identified as H.5683, seeks to redefine the boundaries of South Carolina’s seven U.S. House districts. This bill aims to replace the existing map by using the latest census data and voting precinct lines to redistribute the population evenly across the state, ensuring each district is roughly equal in size.

The second proposal, labeled H.5684, suggests altering the schedule for the 2026 congressional primaries.

This proposal intends to shift the primary elections from their usual June date to a special primary on the second Tuesday of August, with a potential runoff later in that month. It also proposes new deadlines for candidate filing and certification while clarifying that only votes from the August primary will be considered in determining party nominees for the November general election.

According to the Associated Press, the House is weighing whether to advance both a redistricting plan and legislation that would delay the primaries to allow time for districts to be redrawn, even as some early and military ballots have already been cast.

Any redistricting plan would also need approval in the Senate, where support is less certain. The AP reports that a two-thirds vote is required before the end of the regular session for lawmakers to continue working on redistricting afterward, adding urgency to this week’s discussions.

The issue has drawn attention from President Donald Trump, who urged South Carolina senators in a social media post to “be bold and courageous” and to move congressional primaries to August to allow time for new districts to be enacted. In the same post, Trump said he would be “watching closely” as lawmakers take up the issue.

Some, however, believe the move might make some South Carolina districts more competitive for democrats.

Former U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham, a Democrat who previously represented the 1st Congressional District, said in posts on X that changes to the 6th District could have ripple effects elsewhere.

“Clyburn’s voters don’t vanish. They have to go somewhere,” Cunningham wrote, adding that shifting those voters could affect neighboring districts, including the 1st.

The AP reports that while Republicans hold a supermajority, some senators have also raised concerns about whether a redrawn map would produce the intended partisan outcomes or shift voters in ways that could alter the balance of seats.

State lawmakers have previously taken steps that could allow additional debate after the session ends. The House passed a sine die resolution last week that would permit members to return to Columbia to address redistricting, though the Senate has not taken action on that measure.

Lawmakers are expected to begin discussions Tuesday morning, with both the redistricting plan and the proposed primary date change before them as the General Assembly approaches its scheduled adjournment later this week.

Apple Martin Follows in Gwyneth Paltrow’s Footsteps with Prestigious New Role

Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter, who bears a striking resemblance to her, has quickly secured a high-profile fashion role shortly after completing her college education.

Apple Martin took center stage in Chloe’s new summer ad campaign, unveiled on Tuesday.

‘What an absolute honor to get to work with Chloé. I have never seen such ethereal pieces. I cannot fathom how incredibly beautiful this collection is and the fact that I was able to shoot in them makes me feel more than words can express! Thank you for this opportunity,’ wrote the star in her Instagram caption.

At 21, Martin has already graced campaigns for Self-Portrait and The Gap, showcasing bohemian white attire in a beach setting for Chloe.

The imagery drew inspiration from Sandro Botticelli’s iconic 15th-century masterpiece, The Birth of Venus, capturing Martin in front of a half shell.

This Chloe campaign cleverly signals to Hollywood that this latest “nepo baby” is now a college graduate and primed for acting opportunities. With a prominent Hollywood agent already backing her, Apple is poised to follow in her mother’s illustrious footsteps.

It was a family affair on Friday in Tennessee as Apple passed a major milestone.

She brought her divorced parents back together when she graduated from prestigious Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Paltrow and her ex-husband, Chris Martin, attended the ceremony held at FirstBank Stadium, 12 years after their infamous ‘conscious uncoupling.’

Also in attendance was Paltrow’s second husband, TV producer Brad Falchuk, whom she wed in 2018.

Apple, 21, looked every inch the perfect graduate as she strolled along with her famous blended family, wearing a black gown over a white dress with Ray-Ban sunglasses.

The budding model began studying at the university back in 2022 and majored in Law, History and Society. Vanderbilt is one of the most elite colleges in the country, with an acceptance rate of just 5.3 percent.

Proud mom Paltrow looked chic at the ceremony, wearing a pale blue dress with a button-down red jacket and matching scarlet high heels.

The Oscar-winning blonde could hardly keep the smile off her face as she watched her daughter graduate.

Meanwhile, Falchuk was a model step-dad, clad in a navy sweater over a pale blue shirt and berry-colored tie with dark beige slacks and brown suede boots.

Apple took to her Insta Stories to share a photo where she was in her cap and gown with black sunglasses on. She held up her diploma as she smiled but did not add a caption.

Though she has pursued theater as a member of the Vanderbilt Original Cast and has directed student productions, Apple was not a drama major.

However, she has already secured a top Hollywood agent at powerhouse agency CAA, and has detailed her dreams of becoming an actress.

Last year, Apple told Interview Magazine how she loves theater ‘more than anything’.

‘I would love to do theater because I adore it so much. I’ve obviously never done film before, but I’ve been trying to get involved in student films. I was born a theater kid.’

‘I don’t wanna be a singer. I like musical theater, but getting onstage by yourself to sing is so terrifying, I love dancing and I love acting. My dream is to act.’

Meanwhile, Apple previously made headlines after it was claimed that she had been expelled from her elite Los Angeles high school for bullying – allegations she later denied.

Addressing the claims on Instagram last year, she said: ‘Hi! I didn’t wanna respond but this narrative is completely false and has gotten so out of hand. I have never been expelled from any school, especially not for bullying anyone.

‘I completely understand ppl not liking me and that is okay! The internet is a place where ppl can share their opinions.’

Martin’s mother publicly announced in 2022 that her mini-me was beginning college. ‘My daughter went to college in the fall,’ began the blonde.

Paltrow also said that it was hard on her emotionally to say farewell to little Apple.  ‘It was horrible. It was truly horrifying,’ she said. ‘I was sick to my stomach, bursting into tears.”

County Official Allegedly Reprimanded by Sheriff Nancy Guthrie for Reporting Tip to FBI, She Reveals in Interview

0

An Arizona county assessor has revealed she was admonished by the sheriff overseeing the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance after her office forwarded a tip to the FBI, according to a recent report.

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of “Today,” is suspected to have been kidnapped from her Catalina Foothills home on February 1st.

Suzanne Droubie, the official in question, informed the Arizona Republic that the sheriff expressed displeasure after her office, which handles property records in Pima County, sent information to federal authorities.

“It was suggested that by sending this information to the FBI, we were causing additional work for the sheriff’s department, as they were then tasked with following up on all the leads provided,” Droubie shared with the publication.

Droubie was out of office Tuesday and could not immediately be reached by Fox News Digital.

She did not discuss specifics about the tip in the interview but said the FBI had requested information, which her staff provided. Then she had a tense conversation with the sheriff.

“It seemed like he was very stressed, very frustrated,” Droubie told the paper. “I wouldn’t categorize it as yelling, per se, as much as kind of scolding and expressing frustration with all of the leads he was receiving, their obligation to follow up on them, and that my office was, was actually being more harm than good by providing more leads that they just had to follow up with.”

A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said she could not comment.

“We are not authorized to provide any information or comment regarding these claims,” she wrote in an email.

Last week, the sheriff and FBI Director Kash Patel traded barbs over each other’s handling of the case. There has been tension since early on, when the FBI wanted to send DNA evidence to its lab in Quantico and the sheriff sent it to a contracted lab in Florida instead.

Eleven weeks later, the Florida lab sent the sample over to the FBI for more advanced testing. It’s now been more than 14 weeks since Guthrie’s suspected abduction.

Separately, the Pima County Board of Supervisors is expected to address concerns about unrelated allegations of perjury against Nanos at tonight’s meeting. Two supervisors, Dr. Matt Heinz and Steve Christy, told Fox News Digital last week they plan to move to vacate the sheriff’s office under a rarely invoked state law.

“I will make, second and/or support any motion or efforts to vacate,” Christy reiterated Tuesday morning, 100 days after Guthrie’s disappearance.

Manchester United Insights: Michael Carrick Nears Prominent Role Following Andoni Iraola Update; Latest on Marcus Rashford, Manchester City Advances in German Star Transfer, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Controversial Incident

Andoni Iraola has been eliminated from the race for the Manchester United managerial position, as Michael Carrick appears to be the frontrunner for the role.

Despite Manchester United’s official stance that no final decision has been reached, indications strongly suggest that Carrick is set to be named head coach, potentially before the season concludes.

As Iraola prepares to depart from Bournemouth, he was seen as a significant candidate if United chose not to retain Carrick. However, sources reveal that the 43-year-old is no longer in the running, freeing him to consider opportunities at Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

It would be prudent for Manchester United to address the managerial uncertainty before the team disbands for the summer, following their last match of the season against Brighton. Within the squad, speculation is rife about the potential leadership if Carrick does not secure the position. This clarity is crucial, especially as the club anticipates an active transfer window, with prospective recruits eager to know who will helm Old Trafford next season.

The club has been methodically deliberate in their decision-making, engaging with multiple candidates to ensure a comprehensive selection process.

United bosses also wanted to allay any remaining concerns about backing Carrick, whose only other managerial job was at Middlesbrough, and were wary of history repeating itself following the decision to give caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a long-term contract in 2019.

But they have been hugely impressed by the way Carrick has galvanised the club since replacing Ruben Amorim in mid-January, winning 10 of his 15 games in charge with three draws and just two defeats.

Confidential revealed last month that Carrick was in pole position to be installed on a permanent basis, and wins over Brentford and Liverpool to clinch a place in next season’s Champions League only strengthened his case.

Rashy in a rush

United and Marcus Rashford both want to resolve his future as quickly as possible after the England star helped Barcelona clinch the La Liga title by scoring in their Clasico win over Real Madrid.

United are banking on Rashford leaving this summer, Barca would like to keep him and the player is hoping to stay. He also wants clarity over the situation before going to the World Cup, so a swift solution would appear to be in everyone’s best interests.

His representatives, brothers Dwaine Maynard and Dane Rashford, joined other family members at the Nou Camp on Sunday to see the 28-year-old open the scoring with a sensational free-kick in the 2-0 win over Madrid.

United have so far rejected the Catalan club’s request to take Rashford on loan for another season or renegotiate an option in their current agreement that enables them to buy him for £26million. If a compromise can’t be found, it’s feasible that Rashford could return to United this summer. However, there appears to be little prospect of him playing for them again, despite the club needing a left-sided attacker.

United are committed to driving down the wage bill and Rashford will be the highest earner on the books at £315,000-a-week once Casemiro leaves at the end of the season. They would look to sell him amid interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich, although Confidential understands neither club has made contact with United yet.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is in a similar situation, with United unwilling to pay £120,000 a week for him to be sat on the bench as back-up to Senne Lammens. Onana has been on loan at Trabzonspor and the Turkish club would like to keep him but – unlike Rashford – there is no option to buy in the deal.

In the case of Rasmus Hojlund, there is an obligation for Napoli to sign him permanently for £38m if they qualify for the Champions League, but a 3-2 defeat at home to Bologna on Monday night means that has yet to be confirmed.

As well as potentially banking significant transfer fees for Hojlund, Rashford and Onana this summer, United will clear their salaries off the wage bill along with Casemiro and Jadon Sancho whose contracts – worth a weekly £375,000 and £250,000 respectively – will run out on June 30.

Eds or tales?

United will use the savings – and extra £100m guaranteed by Champions League qualification – to make a number of new signings, but a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson is not as advanced as has been suggested.

The 26-year-old Brazil midfielder is high on United’s list of targets, and it’s quite possible he could end up at Old Trafford this summer. But sources insist there has not been any contact between the two clubs, and speculation in Italy that personal terms have already been agreed is premature.

Ederson is available at £40m which was enough to deter Atletico Madrid from pursuing a deal and switch their sights to his Brazil team-mate Joao Gomes at Wolves.

United could be in the market for three midfielders this summer, with Manuel Ugarte likely to follow Casemiro out of Old Trafford. They will look to sign a player for around £80m from a list that includes AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit as well as Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Newcastle man Sandro Tonali and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni.

United will also look to sign a midfielder in the £40m bracket – from a pool that includes Ederson as well as West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Bournemouth duo Alex Scott and Tyler Adams – plus a squad player for around £20m.

City’s Kennet coup

United will also be on the lookout for emerging talent, but they could lose out to Manchester City in the race for highly-rated Hertha Berlin defensive midfielder Kennet Eichhorn. The 16-year-old German prospect is on the radar of most of Europe’s top clubs, and it’s understood that City are ready to move quickly to beat their rivals.

Leicester winger Jeremy Monga, also 16, is another youngster who has caught United’s eye. The England Under-19 international made 30 appearances this season for Leicester, who may be willing to lower their asking price after dropping into League One. Arsenal are hot on Monga’s trail and Real Madrid are also admirers.

City’s ticket sales struggles

With the FA Youth Cup final looming, the reason for City’s reluctance to host the game at the Etihad seems more apparent than ever judging by ticket sales for the big game.

While United sold out their allocation of less than 1,000 to season-ticket holders in a matter of minutes, City are still advertising sales of their share of 4,000 tickets. City have insisted on staging the final at the 6,500-capacity Joie Stadium used by their academy and women’s teams rather than moving it to the 53,400-seater Etihad next door due to what the club say are scheduling and construction issues.

It has also avoided the awkward scenario of City being heavily outnumbered in their own stadium for the first all-Manchester Youth Cup final since 1986. With the players receiving four tickets each for the game, and more seats lost to allow for segregation, there is even more of a squeeze inside the compact Joie Stadium.

When United lifted the trophy in 2022 with a team inspired by Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, 67,000 turned up at Old Trafford for the final against Nottingham Forest. Sadly, only a fraction of their fans will get to see Thursday’s showpiece, denying both sets of players the grander stage this occasion deserves.

Stars out for Youth Cup bid

United are ready to pull out all the stops for their Under 18s in the lead-up to Thursday’s FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City.

While Carrick has already confirmed that he will be at Joie Stadium to watch it, Confidential understands that there are numerous surprises in store for Darren Fletcher and his players in the build-up to the game.

United sources have been sworn to secrecy on the exact nature of those surprises, determined not to ruin it for the youngsters, but they are set to include messages of support from first-team stars.

Last Friday, up at the team hotel in Newcastle, captain Bruno Fernandes watched a stream of the Under 21s defeating Manchester City at the Joie Stadium to reach the Premier League 2 play-off final. Senne Lammens went to see the Under 18s play in the Youth Cup earlier this season at Old Trafford, and sources have not ruled out the prospect of first-team players going to watch the showpiece final across Manchester on Thursday.

Confidential has learned that Tom Heaton has been in regular dialogue about the Youth Cup with young players stepping up into first-team training, passing on every piece of advice from his extensive career.

Speaking of the Under 18s, Daily Mail Sport will have interviews with Fletcher and two players, Rafe McCormack and Yoel Helafu, out in the coming days as part of our extensive coverage ahead of the final.

New kit’s a smash hit

Work has been undertaken at pace to get everything ready for the launch of the new home shirt this week – so much so that it wasn’t without a hiccup or two.

Daily Mail Sport exclusively revealed how United are due to unveil next season’s home shirt early by wearing it in the final two games of this season against Nottingham Forest and Brighton.

The shirt, which will launch officially on Thursday, is being heavily promoted this week as part of a marketing campaign that will also utilise I’m A Celebrity winner Angry Ginge, and popular music artist and fellow United fan Aitch.

But club officials found themselves with an unexpected clean-up job in recent days when a makeover of Old Trafford’s facade saw a giant pane of glass situated above the megastore smashed in the process. Footage shared on social media captured the moment it shattered into pieces as a full-length poster of players wearing the new kit was being laid over the top of it.

The temporary solution was to cover the hole with wood… but the club will hope shirt sale release day goes a little smoother!

Cash in the trash

A pair of Cristiano Ronaldo’s boots that were fished out of a bin at Carrington have sold for £7,500 at auction.

The gold Nike Vapors are said to have been retrieved by United’s old cleaner Tony Heywood after Ronaldo threw them away at the end of a training session in 2004.

A black away shirt worn by the Portugal star in a win over Liverpool at Anfield in 2005 was sold for £14,000 when it went under the hammer at Graham Budd auctioneers in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire – more than a red jersey worn by David Beckham in the Treble season which fetched £10,000.

An original ‘Manchester United Football Club’ sign that was mounted on top of the Stretford End and given by Sir Matt Busby to his barber when the ground was redeveloped in 1992 failed to sell after its reserve was not met.

The lot was valued at between £40-60,000, and Confidential understands that it may be re-auctioned with a lower reserve unless the under-bidders can agree a private sale with the vendor.

OT strikes fear into Ne-Yo

The concept of an away end is alien to many Americans, and R&B star Ne-Yo has described how he found being at Old Trafford earlier this month for United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool ‘one of the coolest yet scariest things’.

United surrendered a two-goal lead to their old rivals before Mainoo’s late strike sealed victory, but the 46-year-old US music artist was fascinated by what was going on in the stands.

‘OK, so I’ve been to a game before, but it wasn’t that,’ Ne-Yo told the Capital XTRA Breakfast show. ‘Like I went in, shook hands with some people, and then we left. I didn’t get to stay and actually watch the game.

‘This time, I got to sit and watch the game and feel the energy when somebody gets a goal and it is electric! One of the coolest yet scariest things. Mind you, there’s 80,000 people in there, right? There’s 70,000 people from Manchester United, and the other 10,000 are stuck in this little corner right on the side, surrounded by police.

‘And I’m like, “OK, if anything does go wrong, then police is not stopping 70,000 people from jumping on these 10,000!”. But, it was an experience to say the least. I would absolutely do it again!’

Tragic Incident: Father Fatally Injured While Intervening in Pizza Party Altercation

In a tragic turn of events at a well-known California pizza restaurant, a man attempting to stop a fight between two women was fatally shot, as reported by authorities.

Andres Castellas, celebrating his 26th birthday, lost his life on Saturday. A GoFundMe page has been created to support his family during this difficult time.

The shooter remains unidentified and is still at large, according to a report by local ABC affiliate KABC.

Castellas was enjoying a birthday celebration with family and friends at Red West Pizza in Wilmington, a Los Angeles neighborhood. Described on the fundraising page as being “surrounded by love and happiness,” the joyous occasion soon took a dark turn.

The incident unfolded when Castellas attempted to intervene in a dispute between two women, as stated by the Los Angeles police. During this altercation, a man opened fire, injuring Castellas and a young employee at the restaurant.

The restaurant employee was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Castellas, however, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“What makes this loss even harder is that Andres was innocent,” the fundraiser says. “He did not deserve for his life to be taken away so tragically. A moment that should have been filled with memories and joy became a heartbreaking tragedy no one could have imagined.”

The shooter ran away after he fired his gun. Police described him as a Hispanic man around 20 to 25 years old.

One local resident expressed how the restaurant is a staple for the community and that the shooting has frightened her.

“There’s a lot of kids there all the time, like it’s kids there all the time, and it’s scary to see that — when you can have a family moment, something like this can happen,” a resident who said she lives around the corner from the establishment told KNBC.

Hilary Duff Stuns on the 2026 ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’ Cover

Hilary Duff has made a splashy entrance into the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit scene, donning an elegant swimsuit for her debut.

At 38, Duff showcased her figure in a sophisticated off-white one-piece by OYE Swimwear. The suit, characterized by its deep neckline, halter straps, and playful back design, graces the cover of the 2026 SI Swimsuit issue. This much-anticipated edition will be available on newsstands starting Thursday, May 14, with a nationwide release set for May 26.

The photoshoot, conducted by Kat Irlin in the picturesque South Caicos, Turks and Caicos, captured Duff with a natural makeup palette—highlighting her glowing skin, well-groomed brows, and sun-kissed cheeks. Her signature blonde locks cascaded in soft, beachy waves.

Throughout the session, Duff also captivated in a semi-transparent white Skims tee, which subtly revealed a black Riot Swim bikini top beneath. Striking a dramatic pose, she leaned against a window, her gaze thoughtful and intense.

Mel Gibson and Italian Actress Antonella Salvucci Share Romantic Evening in Rome

0

Mel Gibson was recently seen enjoying a romantic outing with his new girlfriend, Italian actress Antonella Salvucci.

The 70-year-old actor and filmmaker, who parted ways with his long-time partner Rosalind Ross five months ago, appeared quite enamored with the 44-year-old Italian star. The pair was spotted strolling hand-in-hand through the scenic streets of Rome.

The couple, clearly enjoying each other’s company, shared affectionate moments during a cozy dinner at the popular seafood restaurant Micalusi Real Fish. They exchanged kisses before embarking on a late-night exploration of the enchanting city.

Onlookers noted that their romantic evening took a brief pause when Gibson stepped aside to relieve himself beside a parked car, adding a touch of spontaneity to the night.

As the night progressed, just before the clock struck midnight, they made their way to Rome’s iconic panoramic viewpoint, the Zodiac. This location, often dubbed the “lovers’ driveway,” is a favored spot for couples seeking a romantic atmosphere.

After admiring the city lights, they then hit the iconic Fontanone fountain on Gianicolo Hill, where they were spotted kissing passionately before calling it a night at 1 a.m.

Gibson’s outing marks the first time he has been romantically linked with someone since his public split from Ross in December last year. The pair, who share a nine-year-old son, Lars, called it quits after nine years together.

“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” they said in a joint statement to People.

Salvucci is an Italian actress, television presenter, and former fashion model whose career spans European cinema, television, and international co-productions.

She transitioned from modeling to acting, gaining early recognition in Paolo Sorrentino’s acclaimed film “The Family Friend.”

Splitting her time between Italy and Los Angeles, she is also a recognized entertainment journalist and host, frequently presenting at major European film festivals and industry events.

Gibson isn’t the Italian star’s first Hollywood romance, during a May 2025 interview on theTV program “Storie di donne al bivio,” the blonde bombshell opened up about having a “love at first sight” romance with actor Sean Penn after they crossed paths in LA.

Gen Z’s Top Concerns Ignored: Opposition Challenges Timing and Focus of New Budget Report

0

In Brief

  • Claire Chandler says young Australians are increasingly anxious about housing access and the long-term burden of government debt.
  • Labor’s delayed response to Peta Murphy’s gambling report faces scrutiny over both timing and the limits of reform.

The Opposition’s finance spokesperson has highlighted growing anxiety among Gen Z Australians about the escalating national debt they might inherit, as Labor gears up to present a budget that blends reform with fiscal prudence.

On Tuesday, Claire Chandler addressed ABC radio, emphasizing that young Australians are grappling with a diverse array of economic concerns, extending beyond the housing market’s challenges.

“There are indeed numerous issues troubling the minds of young Australians, with housing being a significant one,” Chandler remarked.

“However, there’s also a burgeoning recognition that the government must operate within its financial limits,” she added.

Echoing this sentiment, Opposition treasury spokesperson Tim Wilson has ramped up his critique, asserting that the government’s budgetary plans threaten to undermine the financial future of younger generations.

The Coalition’s broader resistance to anticipated tax changes in tonight’s budget — including possible reforms to capital gains tax, negative gearing and taxation of trusts — appears to rest on the framing that younger Australians are increasingly concerned about fiscal expansion and the long-term consequences of government debt.

But for many young Australians navigating post-pandemic uncertainty, soaring housing costs, rising living expenses and broader global instability, immediate, not future, financial pressures remain their defining concern, polling from early 2026 suggests.

Research conducted by The Daily Aus in partnership with CommBank Newsroom in January, based on more than 200 Instagram story responses, found housing was the dominant savings priority among young Australians, accounting for nearly half of all responses.

Separate CommBank data consistently found 69 per cent of customers aged 18 to 34 ranked building an emergency fund among their most important financial goals, reflecting a generation facing rising rents, home ownership barriers, personal debt and escalating expenses with little margin for financial error.

A ‘big, bold’ budget and deficits set to continue

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says his fifth budget will pursue structural reform while delivering immediate relief, and has foreshadowed changes designed to help young people enter the housing market.

He has framed the budget as a broad intervention, built around major packages targeting fuel security, housing, cost of living, productivity, tax reform and savings, while arguing that mounting global instability has made delaying reform untenable.

“No budget can fix every issue in the economy in one hit. But tonight we take big, bold, ambitious and responsible steps to try and level the playing field for young people, particularly when it comes to access to a home of their own,” he said on Tuesday.

Labor is keen to emphasise that its aims are generational equity, not competition, with Finance Minister Katy Gallagher saying the budget was not about “generation versus generation”.

She said younger Australians, increasingly frustrated by deteriorating housing access, would remain central to the government’s broader fairness agenda.

“We also have to look at what’s coming next, and increasingly, younger people are being locked out and feel extremely frustrated with the position they’re in around their ability to become an owner of a house, which many of us grew up in this country believing was the Australian dream.”

Despite touting a fiscal position $44.9 billion stronger than forecasts released six months ago, the government is still projecting budget deficits for the next four years, although they’re set to progressively shrink over that period.

Gambling reforms under scrutiny

The government is also expected to formally table its long-awaited response to former Labor MP Peta Murphy’s gambling advertising report on Tuesday, drawing criticism from the Coalition over the timing of its release.

The report, handed down in June 2023, made 31 recommendations, including a call for a total ban on online gambling advertising.

Chandler described the timing as “intriguing”, questioning whether the government was attempting to limit scrutiny by releasing the response while much of the press gallery was in budget lock-up.

“I wonder if there’s anything that the government is trying to hide there,” she said. “That is intriguing timing from the government.”

Health Minister Mark Butler rejected the suggestion the government was burying its response, pointing to Anthony Albanese’s recent National Press Club address.

“The prime minister outlined, since the parliament last sat, a very strong response to that, building on the strongest action that any government had taken, which is the action we’ve been taking over the last four years,” Butler told ABC radio on Tuesday.

The government’s proposed changes are expected to include fewer gambling ads across media, no gambling ads during television broadcasts, a ban on so-called “pocket pokies” and improved financial counselling.

But those pushing for stronger reform are bracing for disappointment, with independent MP Kate Chaney arguing partial advertising bans fall short of the full response recommended by the Murphy report.

“The evidence shows that partial ad bans don’t work,” she said.

“The prime minister’s comments on gambling reform are consistent with a government that does the bare minimum — tinkering around the edges of meaningful reform.”

The scrutiny comes after an Australian Communications and Media Authority investigation found “more than 500 breaches of national self-exclusion rules” by Entain, the parent company of bookmakers Ladbrokes and Neds.

The regulator found Entain opened accounts, allowed bets, failed to close accounts for gamblers who had placed themselves on the national self-exclusion register, and continued sending them texts and emails encouraging them to bet.

Chaney said the case showed the need for a “national gambling regulator with teeth”, though it remains unclear whether such regulatory changes will form part of the legislation.

Fiery Showdown: Nebraska Democrats Battle for Control in Key ‘Blue Dot’ District Primary

0

OMAHA, Neb. – Nebraska’s pivotal “blue dot” comes to the forefront on Tuesday as Democratic voters in the state’s 2nd District head to the polls to choose their congressional candidate in what promises to be a closely watched race.

The Omaha-area district, left open by the retirement of Republican U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, is a key target for Democrats in this midterm election. This district draws significant national attention every four years due to Nebraska’s unique approach to allocating electoral votes, being one of only two states to do so. Since 2008, the 2nd District has favored Democratic presidential candidates in three out of five elections, earning its “blue dot” nickname amid predominantly Republican territory.

In Tuesday’s primary, the Democratic frontrunners include State Senator John Cavanaugh, political activist Denise Powell, and district court clerk Crystal Rhoades. Meanwhile, Republican Brinker Harding, an Omaha City Council member with an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, faces no competition in his party’s primary.

John Cavanaugh has found himself at the center of criticism from both sides of the political spectrum.

Critics within the Democratic Party worry that if Cavanaugh wins, his departure from the state legislature could make it easier for Republicans to alter the state law that permits the division of electoral votes, potentially jeopardizing the district’s “blue dot” status.

The issue has defined the primary contest perhaps more than any other.

Opponents say the ‘blue dot’ is in danger

The Democratic argument against Cavanaugh has little to do with his politics or policies.

His opponents and groups backing them have flooded mailboxes, airwaves and social media warning that if he wins the congressional primary, Nebraska’s Republican governor would appoint a conservative Republican to replace him in the Legislature.

That move, they say, could give state Republicans enough votes to enact a conservative wish list that includes stricter limitations on abortion and transgender rights.

It could also empower Republicans to enact midcycle redistricting or change the state’s unusual system of splitting presidential electoral votes, some Democrats argue. Republicans failed in 2024 to pass a bill that would have made Nebraska the 49th state to award its Electoral College votes on a winner-take-all basis.

“Our Blue Dot. We fought hard for it. But if John Cavanaugh goes to Congress, it could all fall down,” cautions one TV ad by the super PAC New Democrat Majority.

EMILY’s List, a national group that supports women running for office, has put its reach and money behind Powell, calling Cavanaugh’s candidacy “a gift to MAGA Republicans.”

On Tuesday, Democrat Tony Vargas was out with his wife holding a large campaign sign and encouraging Omaha voters to support him in the county treasurer race. He also was supporting Powell in the congressional race, saying preserving the blue dot is important but not the only reason people might vote for Powell.

“I’m not voting for somebody for the blue dot loss. I’m voting for someone who I think is going to be the best leader in Congress,” Vargas said.

Republican groups also target Cavanaugh

Republican groups have sent out mailers and social media posts claiming Cavanaugh “is in agreement with President Donald Trump” and showing a photo of Cavanaugh overlaid on a photo of the president, making it appear as if the two are standing together.

“Clearly, the Republicans know that I’m the strongest general election candidate,” Cavanaugh said. “And so they’re trying to hurt me.”

The attacks on Cavanaugh show Democrats and Republicans believe he has the best chance of winning the general election, said Paul Landow, a former Nebraska Democratic Party executive director.

He called the “blue dot” attacks disingenuous, noting Republicans already have a filibuster-proof majority in the Legislature but have still failed to pass key elements of their agenda because it is unpopular even among GOP lawmakers. The argument that a Cavanaugh win could weaken the state’s “blue dot” also assumes Democrats won’t pick up additional legislative seats this year, he said.

“There’s so many things that have to fall into place for this alleged danger to the ‘blue dot,’” Landow said. “It’s just wild speculation.”

The Democratic primary grows contentious

While all the Democratic contenders cite affordability and opposition to Trump administration policies — from immigration and healthcare to military actions — the top three contenders began attacking one another more aggressively in the days leading up to the primary.

Candidates and allied groups have spent more than $2.6 million on TV and digital advertising since Jan. 1, according to the advertising tracking company AdImpact. Nearly all of that has been by or on behalf of Cavanaugh and Powell.

Cavanaugh has spent about $375,000. Powell’s campaign has spent almost as much — $345,000 — but with the help of groups backing her, campaign advertising has been overwhelmingly pro-Powell.

Powell co-founded Women Who Run Nebraska, a political action committee that supports progressive female candidates, and she has a decade of Democratic political activism. She’s never held office but said her deep connections have helped her with independents and third-party voters who make up nearly 30% of the district’s electorate.

“My name recognition has increased dramatically,” Powell said, adding that “people are really connecting with my message.”

Rhoades carries her own name recognition after 20 years in public service and running a slew of successful local Democratic elections — including that of Omaha Mayor John Ewing, who unseated a longtime Republican last year. Rhoades has raised a fraction of what Cavanaugh and Powell have amassed, but said she’s intentionally eschewing campaign ads and instead blanketing the city with door-knocking and personal contact with voters.

Both Powell and Rhoades have leaned heavily into the concern that Democrats’ influence in the district will erode if Cavanaugh is elected to Congress.

The winner of Tuesday’s primary will head to a highly competitive general election. Trump won the district in 2016, and the retiring Bacon, who has clashed with Trump, has held the House seat for five terms.

Other Tuesday contests

Also on Tuesday’s ballot is the race for U.S. Senate, where Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts is seeking a full term, following his 2023 appointment and 2024 special election victory to replace Republican Ben Sasse.

Ricketts faces four Republican primary challengers, but he’s already looking ahead to an expected general election contest against independent candidate Dan Osborn, an industrial mechanic and military veteran who came within 7 points of defeating Republican U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer in her 2024 reelection bid. Running in the Democratic primary are William Forbes and Cindy Burbank.

In the race for governor, incumbent Republican Gov. Jim Pillen faces five primary challengers, while former state Sen. Lynne Walz and frequent candidate Larry Marvin compete for the Democratic nomination. Marvin previously ran for U.S. Senate four times since 2012.
