Surprising Surge: New Budget Unveils Unexpected Spike in Immigration Numbers

0
There will be 35,000 more migrants in Australia this financial year than previously expected, driven by fewer foreigners on temporary visas leaving, according to the budget papers.

Following the pandemic, immigration experienced a notable surge as pent-up demand from prior border closures was unleashed, reaching a high of over 550,000 in the 2022-23 period. However, this trend has been gradually declining.

Recent data forecasts net overseas migration to reach 295,000 in 2025-26 and 245,000 in 2026-27. These figures exceed previous projections, which estimated 260,000 for the current financial year and anticipated 225,000 for 2026-27.

By the decade’s close, migration is expected to taper to around 225,000 annually, aligning closer to pre-pandemic numbers.

The unexpected rise in net migration presents a challenge to the government’s initiatives to lower these figures. This increase is largely attributed to a slower departure rate of migrants on temporary visas.

As noted in the budget reports, “Arrivals of New Zealand citizens are also anticipated to continue strongly, a reflection of Australia’s comparatively appealing labor market conditions.”

The government says its budget measures will put “downward pressure” on the figures.

They include the extension of a ban on temporary migrants buying established residential property until 2029, new targets for the permanent migration program and tweaks to working holiday visas.

The government says the permanent program will prioritise onshore applications, with 70 per cent of the 185,000 places going to skilled immigrants rather than family reunion visas.

“The government will reform the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program to better control numbers, reduce barriers to work, provide a fairer allocation of WHM visas, and support Australia’s national interests,” the budget papers state.

It’s also doubled the visa application charge for temporary graduate visas, adding an estimated $1.2 billion to Treasury coffers over five years, but the papers don’t reference any estimated impact on numbers.

Immigration has been a hot topic in recent years, with a particular focus on housing and infrastructure levels struggling to keep up.

“Australia is and should always be a country where we judge you by who you are, not where you’re from,” he said.

“People say they love Australia and I do, and almost everybody on this continent does, modern Australia is what they’re loving, and we are a multicultural nation.”

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor last month promised to crack down on migration, introducing an “Australian values” test, the reintroduction of temporary protection visas, more funding to deport people and an unspecified cut to overall migration.

Incoming One Nation MP David Farley initially said a net overseas migration figure of  306,000 was probably not too high before later clarifying “One Nation will cap immigration at 130,000 per year”.

Four Educators Dismissed Following Allegations of Bullying Autistic Student

A group of employees at an elementary school in Texas have lost their jobs following allegations of bullying a six-year-old autistic student, according to the girl’s father.

Daniel Hall, 37, shared with KTRK that his daughter, Trinity, was mistreated by a special education teacher along with three aides at Jan Schiff Elementary School in Fort Bend County on April 14.

Hall explained that he was unaware of the situation until weeks later, when Principal Tiffany Agina reached out to inform him about the dismissal of the staff members involved.

The principal provided Hall with surveillance footage that purportedly captured the abusive behavior towards Trinity by the unnamed staff.

“They clearly saw my daughter’s teacher yank her hair with such force that it dislodged the beads from her head,” Hall recounted.

‘Also on camera, there’s literally teachers encouraging other students to cause harm to my daughter.’

The Daily Mail has not been able to view the footage, but Hall said the staffers mocked Trinity and threw her lunch away.

‘They babies, they don’t know any better,’ Trinity’s aunt, Ashley Sneed, told the local news station.

‘It’s bad enough already. They have a disability. They shouldn’t have to go through nothing like this.’

Fort Bend ISD confirmed it fired a teacher on April 29 and three paraprofessionals on May 4 for ‘inappropriate disciplinary actions.’

Hall said he only learned about the alleged abuse after other students complained about the same staff members, and he has filed a report with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

‘This was only one day of footage, so they can go back 90 days and review the footage,’ Hall said.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the Daily Mail that they are investigating the case, but are unable to provide additional information.

Trinity’s grandmother, Charlotte Sneed, told the local news station that the staffers need to be charged.

‘I think they should go to jail, you know, because they shouldn’t be a teacher,’ she said.

‘They shouldn’t even try to handle kids if they don’t know how to take care of kids. That’s what their job is for.’

The Daily Mail contacted Fort Bend ISD and Jan Schiff Elementary for comment.

It comes just weeks after multiple staffers were fired from Fort Bend ISD’s Burton Elementary amid child abuse allegations.

On April 29, the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office confirmed that several staffers had been fired after a mother said her six-year-old autistic son came home with ‘unexplained injuries.’

‘Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office investigators have confirmed valid allegations of abuse/injury involving an FBISD teacher and teacher assistants at Burton Elementary,’ the sheriff’s office said.

‘We have been advised by FBISD that the staff members involved have been relieved of their employment. Our investigators are actively working this case and are reviewing all students who were under the supervision of these staff members to determine whether there may be additional victims.’

Chicago Teen Mob Swarms Police Car as Bystanders Cheer: Caught on Video

Footage from the event shows a group in Chicago engaging in a chaotic takeover on Wednesday, which included a vehicle crashing into a police car as bystanders cheered and filmed the spectacle.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:43 a.m., as reported by Fox Chicago. During this time, a crowd gathered around the two vehicles, with individuals jumping onto the police cruiser as it was being forced backward by another car.

Nineteen-year-old Maximum Wyderski faces charges of misdemeanor reckless driving, fleeing, attempting to elude officers, and has received nine vehicle citations following the incident.

Another similar street takeover took place Friday night in Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood, confirmed Alderman Peter Chico.

During that street takeover, masked individuals were seen banging on a Chicago police cruiser and preventing it from moving. It’s unclear if any arrests were made.

Alderman Raymond Lopez said everyone associated with the street takeovers should be arrested, and he thinks it’s concerning only one person was caught.

“I’m very much concerned only one person was arrested, in a sea of stupidity we only caught one criminal fish, I find that hard to believe because everyone there is breaking the law,” Lopez said. “Everyone there is contributing to the minors there who are breaking the law and all of them are putting each other’s lives at risk.”

“Nobody should be killed just going about their daily business because of a street take over, because someone wants to become TikTok, Instagram famous,” he said.

Illinois State Comptroller Susan Mendoza criticized Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, saying on X “if you won’t lead, get out of the way and let the police do their jobs.”

“CPD deserves better. This brazen attack on our @Chicago_Police officers calls for license revocation, car impounding, arrests, maximum fines — actual consequences,” Mendoza said.

Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin of ‘The View’ Critique Trump’s Latest Parental Benefits Proposal, Alleging Focus on American-Born White Children

0

During a recent episode of The View, hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin voiced strong criticism of the Trump administration’s newly announced initiatives aimed at boosting birth rates in the United States. The policies, described by Dr. Oz as a push for “more Trump babies,” have sparked controversy and debate.

Joy Behar expressed skepticism about the administration’s genuine interest in children’s welfare. “What bothers me is this false narrative that they care about children,” Behar remarked on the May 12 broadcast. She questioned the meaning behind the term “Trump babies,” suggesting a focus on white children. Behar highlighted that the administration’s cuts to USAID and foreign aid have negatively affected children globally. “Don’t tell me you care about children,” she argued. “You only seem to care about these so-called Trump children.”

Meanwhile, Alyssa Farah Griffin offered a different perspective, noting that some aspects of the policies could positively impact American families. “These are tangible impacts that can help people,” she stated. “While Trump gives us plenty of reasons for criticism, this doesn’t strike me as bad policy.”

Sunny Hostin, acknowledging the validity in all viewpoints, added, “Two things can be true at the same time.” She raised concerns about the intent behind the policies, noting the administration’s lack of attention to the Black maternal mortality crisis. “Black women face a significantly higher mortality rate than other demographics,” Hostin pointed out, “and this administration seems unconcerned about that.”

“I think the intent can be questioned behind these new Trump policies,” she began. “There was no acknowledgment of the Black maternal mortality crisis, because Black women die at a much higher rate than any other demographic and this administration’s not concerned about that.”

She then turned to Behar and noted she agrees with her controversial point. “I think it’s true he wants Trump babies, which implies he wants American-born white children.”

“He wants toddler white nationalists,” Behar quipped with a laugh.

Hostin then added that she also “struggled with infertility” as Griffin did. After explaining she and her husband “went through our entire life savings to have children,” she gave Trump some credit for the new policies. “There’s so much to criticize Donald Trump for – especially his racism, his xenophobia and his misogyny. But these particular things […] I think these are good policies.”

However, Whoopi Goldberg was not so willing to give Trump his credit.

“I’ll believe it when I see people actually getting to do it but I will not give him this until he takes care of the kids from birth to 18 or to 20 [years old],” she said.

“I’m with you!” Behar added.

Australia Intensifies Sanctions on Iranian Officials Over ‘Brutal Oppression’: A Move to Uphold Human Rights

0

In brief

  • The Australian government has sanctioned seven senior Iranian officials and four entities.
  • The sanctions include financial penalties and travel bans.

Australia has announced it will enforce specific financial restrictions and travel prohibitions against high-ranking Iranian officials involved in the repression of women and girls as part of the regime’s societal crackdown.

In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Penny Wong revealed that sanctions have been placed on seven individuals and four entities from Iran. This move comes as a response to Iran’s persistent “brutal” suppression of its populace and the unjust imprisonment of foreign nationals.

According to independent sources, Iranian forces have been responsible for the deaths of over 30,000 people since protests erupted nationwide in January. However, official numbers from the Iranian government claim a significantly lower count.

Among the sanctioned officials is Eskandar Momeni, the interior minister and deputy commander in chief of law enforcement forces, who has been linked to the fatalities of protesters.

Ruhollah Nasab is another prominent figure targeted by these sanctions. He is implicated for orchestrating the deployment of 80,000 personnel to enforce the compulsory hijab policy for Iranian women and monitor dress codes in educational institutions, public areas, and online platforms.

The sanctions will also target Iran’s shadow banking system, which allows it to fund proxies such as Hamas — which Australia considers a terrorist organisation — and support its ballistic missile program.

The Albanese government has so far imposed more than 230 sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities.

The announcement on Tuesday was made alongside the United Kingdom’s sanctions on Iran.

Wong said Australia will continue its work with international partners to hold the regime to account for its “egregious campaign of oppression and destabilisation”.

“Australia continues to stand with the brave people of Iran against a brutal, oppressive regime,” she said.

Although the sanctions target Iran’s destabilising actions throughout the Middle East, they are not in direct response to the retaliatory strikes in the US-led war.

The strikes launched by the US and Israel have resulted in the effective closure of one of the world’s most important oil corridors, the Strait of Hormuz, sending the price of fuel soaring globally.

Fourth Minister Resigns Amid Criticism of Keir Starmer’s Leadership; Prime Minister Urged to Heed Public Sentiment – Live Updates

0

The two ways Keir Starmer could be ousted from Downing Street

Keir Starmer finds himself under mounting pressure today following the resignation of several ministers, with an increasing number of MPs advocating for a change in leadership.

The Prime Minister is experiencing escalating dissent within his party, as over 80 MPs have now indicated that he should step down.

But what are the possible pathways for Sir Keir’s removal from his position in Downing Street?

According to the Labour Party’s regulations, in the absence of a leadership vacancy, prospective challengers can seek nominations.

To initiate a leadership contest, contenders aiming to replace Sir Keir must secure nominations from 20 percent of Labour MPs.

The party currently has 403 MPs in the House of Commons, so this means each challenger will need the support of 81 MPs to force a leadership election.

Sir Keir himself will not be required to seek nominations to enter a leadership election, should he be challenged and he wishes to fight on.

Perhaps a more likely way of forcing Sir Keir out would be to make it practically impossible for him to continue.

A large section of the Cabinet quitting, or a huge groundswell in the Parliamentary party, could be enough to convince him to go.

That would have the benefit for rivals of clearing the way for a wider contest, rather than requiring them to unite around one challenger.

Boris Johnson suffered a similar fate in 2022, when a slew of ministers quit. Mr Johnson ruefully remarked afterwards that ‘when the herd moves, it moves’.

San Francisco Nurse Faces Job Uncertainty Amid DACA Delays; Colleagues Advocate Against Kaiser Permanente

0

A nurse from San Francisco is currently at the center of a debate over immigration policies, as her employment at Kaiser Permanente is in jeopardy due to federal delays impacting her Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

This 34-year-old surgical nurse, originally from the Philippines, has lived in the U.S. since she was two. She now faces the threat of losing her job due to a delay in renewing her DACA work authorization. The DACA program is designed to shield undocumented individuals who arrived as children from deportation while granting them renewable work permits every two years.

On Monday, a demonstration of support took place outside Kaiser, where healthcare workers gathered, chanting, “Do the right thing, Kaiser. Do the right thing,” to advocate for the nurse.

According to Sydney Simpson, a registered nurse who addressed the rally, the nurse is at risk of termination on Thursday because of delays in processing her DACA paperwork, a situation attributed to actions by the previous administration.

The nurse’s colleagues are appealing to Kaiser to grant an extension on her 30-day unpaid administrative leave, allowing time for her documentation to be completed.

“We’re not asking Kaiser to pay her. Just keep her on unpaid leave,” Simpson said and added, “If she were a nurse at the UC system, that’s what they would do. She would stay on unpaid leave until her paperwork comes through. But Kaiser is not negotiating. They’re not budging. We have sent them letters.”

Data from ABC affiliate KGO team found that as of March of 2025, there were more than 16,000 active DACA recipients in the Bay Area, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data.

Advocates say processing delays have grown significantly. San Francisco’s Central American Resource Center is seeing DACA delays of up to five months.

“Processes and applications, that took about three weeks, to get approved are now taking months, many months. What we’re seeing is that many of the work authorization documents are expiring before a recipient, but the beneficiaries are getting, an approval notice,” said Lariza Dugan-Cuadra, executive director of the Central American Resource Center.

Bill Hing, a professor of law and migration studies at UC San Francisco, said employers such as Kaiser Permanente face difficult legal questions in cases like this.

“I think that Kaiser can argue I’m not breaking the law that doesn’t allow me to employ unauthorized workers if I’m acting in good faith. Okay. Are they violating a labor law if they let somebody go who does not have an employment authorization document? I think that they are treading on dangerous territory because DACA recipients historically have been getting renewals,” Hing said.

Hing added that some employers may fear scrutiny from the federal government.

“If Kaiser decides to continue hiring somebody without a valid employment authorization document, they do risk the Trump administration coming in and doing an audit. And so will they be fined for doing this? In my opinion, it all depends on whether or not a judge determines that Kaiser was acting in good faith or not,” he said.

For the nurse at the center of the case, supporters say the outcome could determine whether she can continue working in the profession she has held for years, as broader delays continue to affect thousands of DACA recipients across the region.

Carecen’s executive director is encouraging DACA recipients to plan ahead, “to make sure that they’re applying for renewal six months in advance, given the lags,” said Dugan-Cuadra.

We reached out to Kaiser for comment and did not receive a response at the time of this report.

Russia Unveils Successful Test of Powerful Satan-2 Missile: A New Era in Military Capabilities

0

On Tuesday, the Kremlin announced the successful test of Russia’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile, known as the Satan-2.

President Vladimir Putin revealed that Russia intends to have this missile, officially named Sarmat, operational by the end of the year.

The Satan-2 is a formidable weapon, weighing 208 tons and launched from a silo. Comparable in height to a 14-storey building, it can reach speeds of up to 15,880 miles per hour.

This missile is engineered to deliver nuclear warheads over vast distances, capable of targeting locations in the United States or Europe.

Putin emphasized that the missile is designed to overcome all current and future missile defense systems, highlighting its advanced capabilities in his statements today.

Sergei Karakayev, leading Russia’s strategic missile forces, confirmed through state media that the recent test demonstrated the weapon’s expected capabilities.

Putin also said that work on the ‘Poseidon’ and ‘Burevestnik’ small nuclear propulsion systems were in its final stages.

The Kremlin’s propaganda machine has repeatedly claimed that the Poseidon could ‘sink’ Britain under ‘radioactive tidal waves’, while the Burevestnik has been dubbed a ‘flying Chernobyl.’

A grab from footage released by the Russian Defence Ministry on May 12, 2026, shows the launch of the Sarmat

A grab from footage released by the Russian Defence Ministry on May 12, 2026, shows the launch of the Sarmat

The military exercises, which involved intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICMBs), lasted until May 10, according to reports.

Between May 9 and 11, 2026, a Russian NOTAM indicated a SS-N-23 missile launch from the Barents Sea to the Kura test range.

To monitor this and a potential simultaneous Sarmat ICBM test, two USAF Cobra Ball aircraft were deployed on an overnight reconnaissance mission.

Two US RC-135S Cobra Ball aircraft, designed to track ballistic missile tests, had been active on patrols from Alaska in recent days.

According to local media, the Russian leader noted that the Sarmat is the most powerful missile system in the world, and the total yield of the warhead delivered by this missile is four times greater than that of any Western analogue.

He said: ‘The missile can travel not only along a ballistic trajectory, but also along a suborbital trajectory, which allows for a range of over 35,000 km while simultaneously doubling its accuracy and the ability to penetrate all existing and future missile defense systems.’

Karakayev added:  ‘The positive results of the Sarmat missile system launch will allow us to deploy the first missile regiment armed with this missile system to combat duty in the Uzhur formation of Krasnoyarsk Krai by the end of this year.’

‘The deployment of launchers with the Sarmat missile system will significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the ground-based strategic nuclear forces to reliably destroy targets and fulfill strategic deterrence missions.’

Tuesday’s reported successful launch of the RS-28 Sarmat is the missile’s first achievement since a test in April 2022.

In September 2024, the monster hypersonic missile exploded on the launchpad at Plesetsk cosmodrome leaving a 200ft wide crater.

Satellite images showed the destruction left behind by the blast at the Plesetsk test site in northern Russia, which partially wrecked an observation building close to the launch site.

Fires raged for six-to-twelve hours after the catastrophic incident, according to NASA FIRMS, and several fire trucks were seen at the blitzed site.

The Putin-controlled Russian state media was censored from reporting the explosion at Plesetsk – or the reason behind it.

And a test launch in November 2025 near Yasny, Orenburg region when a rocket flipped soon after takeoff and crashed triggering a giant explosion was reported as being a Sarmat, despite no official confirmation.

Meanwhile, the Poseidon is said to be 20 metres long and nearly two metres wide. Reports indicate that it weighs 100 tons.

It is capable of travelling up to 6,200 miles with a speed of 115 miles per hour deep underwater.

Russia has successfully tested its new Satan-2 intercontinental ballistic missile, Sergei Karakayev, the commander of the strategic missile forces, told Putin

Jeffrey Lewis, a scholar at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, wrote in Foreign Policy last year of the weapon: ‘It’s downright terrifying.

‘We’re talking about a massive, megaton-sized thermonuclear weapon designed to produce significant, long-lasting radiation effects.’

Other officials have also warned that the weapon could be fired from unexpected directions.

Putin also mentioned the Oreshnik missile system on Tuesday, saying it can be equipped with nuclear warheads.

Lieutenant General Andrei Gurulev added that the Oreshnik system is ready for immediate use in the event of ‘provocations’ from Ukraine.

Putin’s TV propagandists previously threatened to use the Satan-2 missile to hit the west.

Earlier this year, a hardline Russian MP warned that it is ‘inevitable’ Russia will strike Britain to wipe it off the earth.

Andrey Gurulev, a reservist general and pro-Putin MP, insisted that the Kremlin would avenge the Ukrainian use of British Storm Shadow missiles against his country.

He told Kremlin-controlled state television: ‘There’s still going to come a point where we’re going to strike. It is inevitable.
