UK Political Turmoil: Over 70 MPs Unite for Keir Starmer’s Ouster – What It Means for the Future

0

in brief

  • Around 70 Labour MPs have publicly called for Starmer’s resignation.
  • The UK Labour Party suffered massive losses during local elections at the weekend.

The pressure is intensifying on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer as the political landscape shifts beneath him. A wave of resignations from four ministerial aides, coupled with the voices of over 70 Labour MPs calling for his departure, has left Starmer navigating turbulent waters.

In a bid to rally support and avert a potential leadership crisis, Starmer delivered an impassioned speech in London. He urged both his party and the electorate to stay the course, cautioning that a leadership contest would only sow chaos. Starmer pledged to adopt a more assertive approach moving forward.

However, his address, in which he all but conceded that he had been too cautious in confronting the UK’s myriad challenges since his substantial electoral victory in 2024, failed to quell the discontent. The backdrop of his speech was one of Labour’s most disheartening defeats in the recent local elections, adding fuel to the fire of dissent.

The resignation of the four aides underscores a growing sentiment within the party that Starmer, now 63, may not be the leader to guide Labour into the next general election, slated for 2029. Their departure is a strategic move aimed at sparking a leadership contest, which could unfold over several weeks or even months.

According to the Labour Party’s rulebook, a leadership election can only be initiated if a prospective challenger secures the written backing of 20 percent of the parliamentary party. This stipulation sets the stage for potential contenders to step forward in the midst of the unfolding political drama.

Currently, that would mean 81 MPs. While it is not being suggested that any figure within the party has such support, that number is considered significant as it indicates that a challenger could be successful against the leader.

“It is clear to me that the prime minister has lost authority not just within the parliamentary Labour Party but across the country and that he will not be able to regain it,” Tom Rutland, ‌a ministerial aide to the ‌environment minister, wrote in his resignation letter.

Catherine West, an Australian-born former junior minister who broke cover on the weekend to threaten to seek a leadership contest if Starmer failed to offer radical change, told Reuters she had received 80 responses supporting her demand that the prime minister set out a timetable for his departure.

She called for a leadership election to happen in September.

Starmer told to go

The Times newspaper ‌reported on Monday evening that Starmer ‌had been told ‌by interior minister Shabana Mahmood and other senior ‌cabinet ‌ministers to consider setting out a timeline for his departure.

The Guardian in the UK is reporting that another senior cabinet minister, foreign secretary Yvette Cooper, has also told Starmer that he should oversee an orderly transition of power.

The Times reported that Mahmood ‌was one of at least three cabinet ministers to suggest that ‌the prime minister needs to consider his position.

Two of Starmer’s closest allies, environment minister Steve Reed and defence minister John Healey, entered the prime minister’s Downing Street office late on Monday, according to Sky News.

Officials did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on whether it was a scheduled meeting.

The PM has said previously that he would stand again if a contest is forced.

Labour rules make replacing a leader more difficult than a Conservative one, as they require MPs to publicly rally around a rival, rather than express dissatisfaction with the leader anonymously.

Frustration with the PM

Local elections held over the weekend in the UK saw Labour lose 1,498 councillors and control of 38 local councils.

Reform UK, the right-wing populist party gaining ground in the country, won 1,454 councillors and control of 14 councils.

Reform leader Nigel Farage has said that the result has “killed” two-party politics in the UK.

YouGov polling indicates that the party could become the largest in the country if the election were held today.

Following the results, Starmer tried to change the narrative about his leadership, arguing he would offer a “complete break” with the decision-making of the past that led to the “status quo”.

Starmer promised to govern with the “hope” and “urgency” required to improve living standards and produce a “stronger, fairer” country to ‌try to crush the challenge posed by Reform on the right, and the ascendant Greens on the left, before the next general election.

“Our response this time must be different, a complete break. We must make this country stronger ‌and take control of our economic security,” Starmer said on Monday.

“I know that people are frustrated by the state of Britain. Frustrated by politics, and some people are frustrated with me,” he said.

“I know I have my doubters, and I know I need to prove them wrong. And I will,” Starmer told an audience of party faithful, who offered him several standing ovations.

The applause was a long way from the messaging groups of Labour MPs, where talk about removing Starmer has stepped up a gear after the party lost hundreds of seats in elections to councils in England and the parliaments in Scotland and Wales.

While there were few Labour MPs prepared to publicly endorse Starmer, the prime minister’s closest allies again warned against removing a leader this early into his premiership, saying it would only further harm the UK.

“Changing leader just leads to chaos. We saw what happened under the Tories. Let’s learn from their mistakes, not repeat them,” Reed said on social media, referring to the opposition Conservative Party.

But Reed seemed to be a lone voice. Earlier attempts to oust Starmer had been met with a resounding backing from most of his top cabinet team of ministers.

Angela Rayner, a former deputy prime minister seen as a potential challenger for the leadership after criticising Starmer’s operation on Sunday, told a union conference the government “will be judged on actions and not just our words”.

Starmer has long said he would not leave his job voluntarily, and his team said the speech was a way of showing the often quietly spoken former lawyer was resolute in delivering not only for his party, but the wider country.

In it, he promised to build closer ties with Europe, to nationalise a key steel business and to do more to help young people get into work.

“I’m not going to walk away,” Starmer said.

Family Seeks Help to Locate Missing 26-Year-Old Who Disappeared at Grand Canyon Just Before Graduation; Backpack Discovery Offers New Clue

0

The family of a student from Arizona State University, who mysteriously disappeared from the Grand Canyon just a week ahead of earning his master’s degree, is urgently appealing for assistance. They are especially keen to connect with the individual who discovered his backpack.

According to reports from Fox News, 26-year-old Sandarsh Krishna informed his family on April 27 of his plan to visit the Grand Canyon’s South Rim while en route to Las Vegas. He intended to return in time for his final exams and his graduation ceremony scheduled for May 9.

Sadly, since that day, Krishna has not been in contact, leaving his family in a state of distress as they search for any clues about his whereabouts.

In their quest for answers, his family has made several trips to the South Rim over the past week. They are using cellphone tower data, which pinpoints Krishna’s last known location between the Bright Angel Lodge and Mohave Point on the day he went missing.

Since then, there has been no further activity from his cellphone, prompting Krishna’s family to comb through the area “two to three times already, looking for him,” according to his sister-in-law, Pooja Shivananjappa, who spoke with AZFamily.

‘We obviously don’t want to give up, so we have taken our binoculars, we have walked the trail, we have done our own research.’

The family has even hired their own private investigator to help find Krishna, as his brother, Adarsh Krishna, said they ‘don’t want to believe he’s hurt’ and still have hope ‘that he’s somewhere out there.

‘But again, we need proper closure. We don’t know exactly what happened to him,’ Adarsh told KPNX, adding that his brother is ‘not the kind of kid who would hurt himself.’

Krishna had moved to Arizona from India in 2024 to pursue a master’s degree in computer science at Arizona State University.

His loved ones describe him as bright, kind and deeply family-oriented.

‘He has a helping hand,’ Shivananjappa said. ‘As I said, he has the heart of a kid, and we terribly miss him.’

Family members and park officials are now looking to speak with a good Samaritan who brought Krishna’s backpack to the Bright Angel Lodge lost and found at around 7am on April 27.

The man did not leave his name or indicate where he found the backpack, but authorities stress they do not believe he is a suspect in Krishna’s disappearance.

Authorities are instead looking to speak with him to get more details about where and how he found the backpack, in hopes that he could provide them with more details about what led up to Krishna’s disappearance.

‘This is the whole reason why we are calling, and we are reaching out to everybody to find the person who returned the backpack,’ Shivananjappa said.

‘This is a main piece of evidence as of now. If we can get to know the exact location of the backpack, we can focus on searching that specific area.’

In the meantime, search efforts have ramped up across the South Rim, with more than 30 search and rescue personnel deployed over the past several days.

Crews are using a myriad of techniques to try to find Krishna, including trail scanning, walk-down routes into the canyon, technical rope insertions, aerial reconnaissance flights and drone operations, park officials have said.

Rangers are specifically focusing on an area along Hermit Road.

Krishna was last seen wearing black pants, a white hoodie and black and white Jordans.

He is described as 5-foot-10-inches with a thin build, weighing approximately 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

He may have been using a rideshare or taxi service at the time of his disappearance.

Anyone with information about Krishna’s whereabouts or information about the good Samaritan who turned in his backpack is asked to call the tip line at (888) 653 – 0009.

Terrifying Assault Rifle Attack near Boston: Gunman Injures Two Before Police Intervention

0

In a chaotic scene just outside Boston, a man with a history of violence against police opened fire on motorists along a busy roadway, leaving two drivers seriously injured. The assailant, armed with an assault-style weapon, was eventually confronted and subdued by a state trooper and a Marine veteran who had stopped to assist, authorities reported on Tuesday.

The attacker unleashed over 60 rounds during the Monday afternoon incident, targeting at least a dozen vehicles, including a state police cruiser. The gunfire sent drivers into a panic, abandoning their cars and seeking safety, according to statements from prosecutors and the state police.

Authorities detailed how the gunman, moving alongside the road, managed to wound two motorists critically before being neutralized by the law enforcement officer and the veteran. Both injured drivers were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening conditions.

The shooting occurred along a frequently traveled route adjacent to the Charles River in Cambridge, an area well-known for its proximity to prestigious institutions like Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The region’s sidewalks and riverside paths are typically teeming with pedestrians, joggers, and cyclists.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan highlighted the bravery of the trooper and the civilian veteran, stating, “As people fled their vehicles in panic, these two individuals moved toward the gunman with their weapons to bring the situation to an end.”

The suspect, Tyler Brown, 46, of Boston, faces two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and six other charges, including possessing a gun without a license. Court documents show Brown had been released from a psychiatric hospital Friday.

About an hour before the shootings, he connected with his parole officer via video conference. Armed with a gun, he said on video that he had relapsed and wanted to end his life. The parole officer called police, who began searching for Brown and found him in Cambridge using phone records.

Witnesses describe chaotic scene

Armando Zona, whose apartment overlooks the scene, initially thought he was hearing construction equipment when banging noises started. But when he went onto his balcony to check, he saw the gunman firing at cars.

“He took a glance towards here, I’m quite sure about that, and I ran,” he said. As Zona yelled to his wife to hide in the bathroom, he heard another bang.

“I turned around, I see the window splattered,” he said. “I could not comprehend, how can this be? This is a bullet that just came into my house.”

Rachael Saveriano said she was trapped in her car as Brown walked toward her, waving his gun. A man later described as the Marine veteran helped her escape, she told The Boston Globe.

“It doesn’t feel like you should get out of the car when there is a shooter coming toward you, but there was a man next to me,” she said. “He opened my car door, pulled me out, and told me to run.”

Saveriano said she saw the man shooting at Brown as she fled.

“He is an incredible hero,” she said. “He was so calm, and he didn’t hesitate.”

The Marine veteran told investigators he had been driving southbound when he saw cars turning around and heard gunfire. A former firearms instructor, he retrieved his pistol from a safe in his backseat and — after the gunman got closer — fired eight rounds, according to a criminal complaint.

Court documents include criminal history, mental health issues

The complaint describes what led up to the shootings. According to investigators, Brown had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression and had been released Friday from a psychiatric hospital.

According to the complaint, Brown is on parole and probation for offenses including armed assault to murder and other gun-related convictions. His parole was set to end this week, though his probation continued.

In 2020, Brown was arrested after firing several rounds at Boston police officers, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said then that he should serve at least 10 years in prison, due to the “level of brazen violence” and because he was on probation for a 2014 conviction on assault and witness intimidation charges. A judge instead ordered Brown to serve five to six years in state prison and three years of probation with credit for nearly 18 months spent in custody.

At the time, the judge’s decision sparked outrage and criticism among local officials concerned that violent offenders weren’t being held accountable. Those same concerns returned Monday.

“Talk about a ball drop,” said the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association in a statement on social media. “The fact that the judicial system thought it was prudent to show leniency to a wannabe cop killer 5-years ago is not only the definition of insanity but an undeniable insult to those who put their lives on the line everyday.”

Joey Bennett, a friend of Brown’s who rode his bike to the scene after hearing about the shooting, said that he “can’t make sense of it.”

“Only thing that makes sense to me is that he was struggling,” Bennett said, adding that his friend “had a good heart” and that “we all get stigmatized by our past.”

“He obviously was going through a moment because the person that I know, I don’t understand why he would be right here doing what he did,” he said. “I mean, he could have made other decisions other than doing what he did . But the only thing I can say is that mental health is real. Mental health is not taken seriously across the United States until there always is a shooting or something that happens to innocent people.”

No connection found between shooter, victims

Ryan, the district attorney, said investigators found no connection between Brown and those targeted Monday. She renewed her call for harsher penalties on people who fire weapons disregarding the risk of serious injury.

“What happened today cannot stand,” she said.

Brown was not medically ready to go to court for an arraignment, the Cambridge District Court said Tuesday. The Committee for Public Counsel Services confirmed it has been appointed to defend him but declined to comment. A message was also left at a phone number listed for Brown and a potential family member.

Piers Morgan Critiques ‘Strike Force Five’ Hosts in Latest Commentary

0

Piers Morgan recently took aim at the top five late-night television hosts in the U.S. after they posted a photo from Stephen Colbert’s farewell tour.

Known as the ‘Strike Force Five,’ this group comprises Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers of Late Night, John Oliver from Last Week Tonight, Jimmy Kimmel of Live!, and Jimmy Fallon from The Tonight Show.

The quintet originally banded together in 2023 during a writers’ strike and reunited for a special episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert this past Monday.

To mark their final gathering at Colbert’s desk, they captured the occasion with a commemorative photo featuring smiles and camaraderie.

Morgan, however, took a sharp swipe at the ensemble in a post on X, sarcastically noting, “Great to see America’s late-night TV hosts unite yesterday as a perfect example of the DEI they so often promote.”

Durng the show, Colbert introduced his fellow late-night hosts as ‘four of my best television friends.’

The crew all sat on the couch, where Kimmel took a walk down memory lane and explained how the group began.

‘Strike Force Five is and always will be a group of five individuals who went on strike along with their writers, who were paying their writers,’ Kimmel said.

‘So we did a podcast that paid a tiny portion of that. We did 12 episodes,’ he added, before Colbert chimed in to say they would do an ’emergency’ episode right after the show.

During the segment, Colbert addressed the future of late-night TV and asked his four fellow hosts to make their case for how it may survive in a challenging time.

‘Look at the figures. The fact of the matter is, more people are watching late-night television now than, and I know everybody gets crazy, when Johnny Carson was on,’ Kimmel responded.

Kimmel pointed to the so-called power structure, specifically referencing when ABC parent company Walt Disney took him off air in 2025 over comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk.

He said the audience was so angered by the decision that ‘people canceled Disney+’ in protest, ultimately resulting in his reinstatement.

‘Why aren’t you people canceling Paramount+? Because you didn’t have it in the first place?’ he said, joking about why fans weren’t canceling their subscriptions to protest Colbert’s cancellation.

Fallon chimed in, adding: ‘Late night is one of those things that has been around our whole lives. It’s part of our lives. People want to go to sleep having a good laugh, and go to bed happy.’

All the hosts reflected on their clashes with the President.

Just last month, First Lady Melania Trump criticized Kimmel after he jokingly called her an ‘expectant widow’ on air.

‘Most of us have avoided that part,’ Meyers told Kimmel, before Oliver said it’s ‘amazing to get a group text saying “Oh boy,” and then a picture of Melania mad at him.’

Meyers added that Trump is one of the few still watching late-night shows live before criticizing them on social media.

‘I appreciate that he is watching linear television,’ he said. ‘If I would make my case for late night, it’s that leaders of the free world are watching it when it airs.’

The episode ended with the hosts sharing a confession, in which Colbert admitted, ‘Jane Fonda and I did not make out, but she stuck her tongue in my ear.’

Last week, Colbert’s prolonged sendoff grew even more over-the-top, with some on-stage shots and a full-on wrestling match.

The late-night antics occurred during a guest spot from John Krasinski, in which Colbert looked visibly care-free as he whipped out a bottle of bourbon and began to drink.

‘I have a bar back here,’ Colbert said as he did, motioning to his desk. The men went on to take three swigs apiece. ‘I have no idea where we are in this interview, and I do not care!’ he added.

Eventually, Colbert asked Krasinski if he wanted ‘to leg wrestle.’ Krasinski, a friend of the comic’s, at first abstained, but after a second challenge, he reluctantly agreed.

Colbert then explained how the playground contest works: Two parties lay side-by-side with their heads in opposite directions and try to flip the other over using only one leg, he said.

A visibly more versed Colbert quickly won, despite slurring his words. The interview ended there, and the screen faded to black.

Colbert openly criticized Paramount days before the network announced the show would be renewed come May, back in July after the company reached a $16million settlement with Trump for what many viewed as a baseless lawsuit.

He quickly called the move ‘a big fat bribe’, pointing out how a long-in-limbo merger between Paramount and Skydance was solidified by the federal government within days of the settlement.

The host, just days later, received word that his show was being cancelled. The reason given by showrunners was declining ad revenue.

The multibillion-dollar merger was approved by the FCC shortly thereafter, fueling a steady stream of attacks from Colbert since.

At the end of the episode, Colbert admitted, 'Jane Fonda and I did not make out, but she stuck her tongue in my ear'

Meanwhile, both Paramount and CBS have continued to say the decision was made for financial reasons.

The Late Show – started by Letterman in 1993 – is now set to be replaced by Comics Unleashed, a long-syndicated comedy panel show hosted by billionaire Byron Allen.

Colbert’s next project will be an unspecified work set in the universe of Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson has been tapped as a producer.

Undocumented Immigrant Faces Charges in Disturbing Case, Sparks Debate Over Current Policies

0

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer to Montana authorities, urging them not to release an undocumented immigrant from jail. The individual in question is accused of assaulting his deceased girlfriend’s daughter.

Wualter Jesus Travieso Soto, a 29-year-old who allegedly entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was subsequently released, faces serious charges in Flathead County. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), he is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse without consent with a minor under the age of 16.

The investigation into Soto began in May 2025. It was initiated by the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office after the sister of Soto’s deceased girlfriend came forward. She informed authorities that Soto had taken custody of her sister’s children following their mother’s tragic car accident in 2024.

Facing felony charges, Soto, who hails from Venezuela, is currently detained in Flathead County jail. His bail is set at $200,000. The charges involve allegations of non-consensual sexual acts with a child, as reported by ICE.

The sister of Soto’s late girlfriend contested his guardianship of the children after she reportedly found disturbing images and videos. These materials allegedly depicted Soto engaging in inappropriate and romantic behavior with her eldest niece, as detailed by the Daily Inter Lake.

After the children’s aunt secured guardianship, the girl told investigators Soto had raped her multiple times and, in one alleged incident, choked her, according to DHS.

Soto was arrested Feb. 1 and remains jailed on $200,000 bail, authorities said.

“This monster repeatedly raped the child of his dead girlfriend,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement Thursday.

“He would not be in this country in the first place if it weren’t for the Biden Administration’s disastrous catch and release policies that allowed him into our country. ICE is asking officials in Montana to turn this perverted criminal over to ICE custody so that we can get him off our streets and out of our country. With cooperation from our local partners, we will ensure this predator NEVER harms another innocent child.”

DHS said in a post on X that ICE, with cooperation from Montana authorities, “will ensure this predator NEVER harms another innocent child.”

Records reviewed by Fox News Digital also showed he sought legal guardianship of at least one of the children in court following his girlfriend’s death in the car accident in 2024.

He pleaded not guilty before Judge Danni Coffman at his April 9 arraignment. Soto remains in the county jail, held on an immigration detainer and $200,000 bail. His next court date is Aug. 3.

UK Announces Deployment of Warship and Drones to Iran in Strategic Initiative

0

Former President Donald Trump has announced his intention to engage in an extensive conversation about the ongoing conflict in Iran during his visit to Beijing, where he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Despite this, Trump minimized the necessity of securing Chinese assistance to resolve the situation.

“I don’t believe we need any help with Iran. We’ll achieve victory one way or another,” Trump stated confidently from the White House lawn. “We’ll secure it either through peaceful means or otherwise,” he added.

When questioned about his intended message to President Xi regarding Iran, Trump acknowledged Xi’s cooperation. “Honestly, I think he’s been pretty good. Look at the blockade; there’s been no issue. They source a significant amount of their oil from that region, and we’ve encountered no problems. Plus, he’s been a friend of mine,” Trump remarked.

However, moments later, Trump seemed to downplay the importance of discussing Iran with China, asserting that the United States has the situation “very much under control.”

He emphasized that their primary focus during the discussions would be trade, which he described as “more than anything else.”

We have a lot of things to discuss; I wouldn’t say Iran is one of them to be honest with you, because we have Iran very much under control. We’re either going to make a deal or they’re going to be decimated,” he said.

60 Minutes Veteran Overlooked for Exclusive Interview with Benjamin Netanyahu: What Happened?

0

Veteran journalist Lesley Stahl of “60 Minutes” is reportedly contemplating her role at CBS News following her exclusion from a significant interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This unexpected turn of events has led to internal tensions within the esteemed news program.

Sources indicate that Stahl, who is 84, was taken by surprise when Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss bypassed her for the high-profile interview. Instead, Major Garrett, CBS News’s Chief Washington Correspondent, conducted the discussion with Netanyahu. This decision, reported by Status, has stirred unrest among the show’s staff.

The team at the newsmagazine expressed frustration, feeling that Weiss, who is 42, had undermined Stahl by orchestrating the interview herself. Stahl had reportedly been working for months to secure this conversation with Netanyahu. Her exclusion in favor of Garrett has left many at “60 Minutes” dissatisfied, as noted by Status.

This isn’t the first time Weiss has made such a decision, having previously assigned Garrett to interview Pete Hegseth in March. That move also caused discontent among the staff, prompting intervention from Executive Producer Tanya Simon.

In the latest instance, Simon reportedly showed reluctance to replace Stahl with an external figure, reflecting the internal resistance to Weiss’s approach. The situation continues to evolve as the dynamics within “60 Minutes” are closely watched.

The network reportedly considered another program to carry the interview instead.

Weiss ultimately went with Garrett, however, and Stahl is now under the impression her boss ‘went behind her back,’ said sources.

The latter is now weighing whether to return to the show next season, according to the report. The final episode of 60 Minutes’ 58th season airs on Sunday. Stahl has been a correspondent there for 34 years.

Moreover, her contract expires this year, Status reported.

A CBS News spokesperson said it was not strange for Weiss to elect for an outside party for the high-profile interview.

‘It’s the editor in chief’s job to make decisions about bookings and interviews,’ they said.

‘Major is a world-class journalist and did a tough, fair, and newsmaking interview.’

Five people familiar with the matter spoke to Status for the report.

The saga comes following years of 60 Minutes team enjoying a large degree of autonomy, with program execs usually making such calls.

CBS is in the midst of an ongoing overhaul from Weiss, who took the reins in October.

Weiss was tapped to head CBS News by a then-new Paramount CEO David Ellison.

Stahl was one of several correspondents to demand the company promptly name their pick for the show’s next executive producer a few months before, after the exit of longtime lead Bill Owens in April of last year, Status reported at the time.

Owens – as well as former CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon – left in protest of Paramount’s then-ongoing bid to settle a suit from Donald Trump. The lawsuit surrounded an October 60 Minutes interview the president said was ‘deceptively edited.’

After the suit was settled, a long-in-limbo merger between Paramount and Ellison’s Skydance quickly received federal approval.

Ellison, 43, assumed the top spot at the newly formed company in process. His father, billionaire Larry Ellison, has close ties to Donald Trump.

The younger Ellison quickly hired Weiss and paid her $150 million for the publication she created, The Free Press, as his first moves.

Other actions from Weiss have frustrated staff, including her last-minute decision to shelve a segment on the ‘brutal and tortuous conditions’ at a prison in El Salvador where the US notoriously deported illegal immigrants in December.

Weiss is a supporter of the war in Iran and has also accused the media at large of fostering an anti-Israel bias.

Former Paramount heiress Shari Redstone, the daughter of late Viacom billionaire Sumner Redstone, previously told New York Times in August that she was put off by a then-recent 60 Minutes episode about the Israel-Hamas conflict she felt was too slanted in favor of the Palestinian cause.

‘Once that happened, I wanted out. I wanted to support Israel, and address issues around antisemitism and racism.’

Shortly after, Ellison contacted her asking if she’d sell to Skydance, the production company he’d set up with help from his father.

Redstone closed the sale for $8billion in August. She took home an estimated $2.8billion.

Foreign Worker and Dali Ship Operator Indicted in Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse, Reveals New Court Documents

On Tuesday, federal authorities revealed that criminal charges have been filed against the Singaporean operator and an employee of the container ship involved in the collision with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge over two years ago.

The charges, outlined in an indictment dated April 8, target Synergy Marine Pte Ltd from Singapore, Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd based in India, and technical superintendent Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair, an Indian citizen.

The accusations against the companies and Nair include conspiring to defraud the United States, failing to promptly notify the U.S. Coast Guard of a hazardous condition, obstructing an agency proceeding, and making false statements.

Officials claim that the company improperly modified the flushing pumps on the Dali container ship to fuel two generators. This alteration allegedly led to a second blackout after an initial power loss caused by a loose wire.

“The indictment asserts that if the Dali had utilized the correct fuel supply pumps, the vessel could have regained power in time to safely pass under the Key Bridge,” said U.S. Attorney Kelly Hayes during a press briefing.

The utilization of such flushing pumps is considered a violation of international law, with authorities alleging the company’s operators – including Nair – “knew about the improper use of the flushing pump and the risks that it presented,” Hayes said.

“The indictment further alleges that after the crash, Nair falsely told the National Transportation Safety Board that he was unaware that the Dali was using the flushing pump,” Hayes added.

Investigators found evidence of the pumps being used on three ships – including the Dali – that are operated by the company, officials said.

In a statement, Synergy Marine Group condemned the charges while asserting investigators’ findings that the accident was “inevitable due to the loose wire.”

“DOJ is criminalizing a tragic accident. The allegations in the indictment are baseless and have nothing to do with the Dali’s allision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge,” a Synergy Marine Group spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital, adding, “DOJ’s allegations are inconsistent with the clear and well-documented findings of the specialist maritime professionals involved in the NTSB investigation.”

The development comes one month after Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and Synergy Marine Pte Ltd reached a settlement in principle with the State of Maryland over damages stemming from the ship’s collapse, including disruption to the port and environmental damage, according to The Associated Press.

A civil trial is set for the summer.

The Dali was navigating out of Baltimore Harbor bound for Sri Lanka when it lost power and struck a support pier, causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River, around 1:30 a.m. on March 26, 2024.

The collision killed six construction workers who were filling potholes on the bridge at the time.

“The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a preventable tragedy of enormous consequence,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said. “This indictment is a critical step toward holding accountable those whose reckless disregard for maritime safety regulations caused this disaster.”

Maryland officials estimate it could cost between $4.3 billion and $5.2 billion to replace the bridge, which is set to reopen in late 2030.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Department of Justice and an attorney representing the victim’s families for comment.
