Audio Uncovers Struggle for Control in Boeing Cockpit Moments Before Crash

0

An intense 18-second altercation reportedly unfolded in the cockpit of the ill-fated China Eastern Airlines flight just before it crashed into a mountainside, according to an Italian newspaper.

Evidence gathered by the National Transportation Safety Board during their probe into the 2022 tragedy suggests a struggle ensued, with one individual in the cockpit attempting to lift the plane while another forced it downward.

This China Eastern flight met its tragic end on March 21, 2022, as it journeyed from Kunming to Guangzhou, resulting in the loss of all 132 passengers and crew members.

Corriere della Sera, referencing sources close to the investigation, reported that the cockpit voice recorder captured sounds of screams, rapid breathing, and what seemed like a confrontation or struggle in the moments leading up to the crash.

The publication further detailed that flight data analysis revealed both engines had been turned off before someone pushed the control column forward, causing the plane to plummet sharply.

The report said another person inside the cockpit then appeared to pull the controls in the opposite direction in an apparent attempt to regain control of the aircraft.

It remains unclear who was carrying out the actions. There were three people in the cockpit at the time. The captain, the first officer and an observing pilot.

Corriere reported that the struggle lasted around 18 seconds before the aircraft’s black box stopped recording flight data.

The claims emerged after newly released information from American investigators suggested both engines on the Boeing jet had been deliberately shut off before the crash.

In response to a public records request, the National Transportation Safety Board released a report detailing what was recovered from the aircraft’s flight data recorder.

The NTSB became involved in the Chinese investigation because the plane and engines were made by American companies and the US investigators are regarded as the world’s leading experts on analyzing black boxes after a crash.

The report offers the best explanation yet about what caused the crash and confirms news stories at the time suggesting the crew may have played a role after Chinese investigators said they did not immediately find a problem with the plane.

Aviation safety experts agree that the data shows the fuel to both engines was cut off and someone sent the plane into a nosedive and a 360-degree roll.

But it does not conclusively show exactly what happened because the Civil Aviation Administration of China has yet to release its final report more than four years later.

International standards call for investigators to strive to release their report by roughly a year after a crash. The NTSB report was released May 1.

By design the fuel levers in a 737 cannot be easily bumped or shut off inadvertently – someone has to pull them out to release them before they will move.

According to Corriere della Sera, analysis of the aircraft’s flight data indicated that both engines were shut down before somebody pushed the control column forward, sending the jet into a steep nosedive

John Cox, CEO of Safety Operating Systems, said the levers lock into place, so it’s likely that someone deliberately moved them both to the cutoff position.

The data ended while the plane was still at 26,000 feet (7,900 meters) of altitude after the flight recorder and all the plane’s hydraulic systems lost power.

The cockpit voice recorder, which continued working because it had a battery backup, could also help shed light, but the NTSB did not release a transcript of what it found on those recordings.

It is up to Chinese authorities to release those details.

Jeff Guzzetti, who formerly investigated crashes for the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration, said the flight data suggests a struggle and the crash could have been a pilot suicide.

There have been a number of previous instances of that, including a Germanwings flight that crashed into the French alps in 2015, killing everyone aboard.

‘Typically when you want to roll an airplane, it’s a smooth movement of the control wheel in one direction.

‘But here you have it moving back and forth, back and forth, as if someone is trying to counter the initial movement of the roll,’ Guzzetti said. ‘So it’s not conclusive, but it sure has the earmarks of a struggle in the cockpit.’

The details about this crash will renew longstanding industry concerns about how to ensure pilots’ mental health.

Many are reluctant to come forward and seek help for fear they could lose their medical certification and be grounded.

Getting recertified can take months or longer during which a grounded pilot is not getting paid. Meanwhile some countries prohibit pilots from taking common psychiatric medicines such as antidepressants.

‘Clearly pilots – and very understandably so – are oftentimes reluctant to come forward, knowing that to get recertified after having gone through a mental health evaluation, it can be very arduous and very lengthy,’ Cox said.

Guzzetti said the co-pilot of an Egypt Air plane that crashed in 1999 is believed to have deliberately sent it into the ocean off New York.

In 2023, in an incident that did not end in a crash, an off-duty pilot who took psychedelic mushrooms days beforehand tried to cut the engines of a Horizon Air flight while riding off-duty in the cockpit.

The jet was flying from Kunming in the southwest to Guangzhou, near Hong Kong, when it went into a nosedive at about 8,800 meters (29,000 feet), appeared to recover but then slammed into the mountain.

The crash left a 65-foot (20-meter) crater and set the forest on fire.

The crew reported no problems before losing contact with air traffic control. Chinese investigators said no abnormalities were found among the plane or crew or with outside elements such as bad weather.

Cox also said the new report from the NTSB does not indicate any problem with the plane.

The March 21, 2022, crash was a rare failure for the Chinese airline industry, which dramatically improved safety following deadly crashes in the 1990s. China Eastern is one of four major state-owned airlines in the country.

Tragic Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Claims Three Lives, Leaves Many Trapped

0
A volcanic eruption killed three people and triggered a rescue operation to get more than a dozen hikers stranded near the crater of Indonesia‘s Mount Dukono to safety on Friday morning, officials said.
Singapore nationals and an Indonesian citizen were among those killed when the volcano, on the island of Halmahera in North Maluku province, erupted, according to the island’s police chief and search and rescue officials.

BASARNAS, the national search and rescue authority, has yet to confirm the identities or nationalities of those who perished in the recent volcanic eruption.

According to North Halmahera Police Chief Erlichson Pasaribu, the eruption occurred while nine foreign nationals and 11 local hikers were navigating the slopes of Mount Dukono. Pasaribu shared this information during an interview with Indonesia’s Kompas TV.

By late Friday afternoon, all climbers who survived the ordeal had successfully made their way down the mountain, Pasaribu assured.

However, the ongoing volcanic activity has posed significant challenges for rescue teams trying to recover the bodies of the three climbers who were killed, Pasaribu reported.

Dramatic footage captured by Alex Djangu, an Indonesian mountain guide, shows a massive plume of smoke and ash billowing from the mountain’s crater, underscoring the volatile nature of the situation.

Djangu was guiding two German tourists on Mount Dukono when he felt deep tremors before the eruption, telling CNN it was “very scary”.

“I saw the small rocks and gravel sliding down because of the tremors, then I told my clients we have to run down,” he said.

While Djangu and his group were able to safely evacuate, he said many hikers remained at the crater at the time of the eruption.

“When we were about 100 metres away, I saw two groups of local tourists, one group of nine people already close to the rim and the other were videoing for content.”

“I hope they are still alive,” he can be heard saying in the video.

The volcano, he said, is highly active and continued to erupt into Friday afternoon “with supersonic sound”.

Mount Dukono is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, with authorities noting increased activity since late March.

“When Mount Dukono does not erupt for several days, people need to be careful because it may be building up very high pressure. And that is what happened today,” Djangu said in the video.

Rescue teams could be seen on the mountain on Friday, and carrying at least one injured person on a stretcher through the forest, in photos from Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency BASARNAS.

Indonesia sits on the “Ring of Fire”, a band around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic activity frequently occur.

One of the most seismically active zones on the planet, it stretches from Japan and Indonesia on one side of the Pacific to California and South America on the other.

Lakers’ JJ Redick Awaits Pivotal Challenge Against Thunder

0

OKLAHOMA CITY — The annals of NBA history are filled with standout coaching decisions that have left lasting impacts on the game.

One such moment came when Rick Carlisle decided to start J.J. Barea for the Mavericks midway through the 2011 NBA Finals, a bold move against the formidable Heat’s “Big 3.”

Another notable strategic shift occurred during the 2015 NBA Finals, when Steve Kerr placed Andre Iguodala into the Warriors’ starting lineup, helping them recover from a 2-1 deficit against the Cavaliers.

However, for Lakers coach JJ Redick, his achievement of overcoming the defending champion Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals without the star presence of Luka Doncic is arguably even more remarkable.

In just his first two years of coaching at any level, Redick has demonstrated significant potential. He has managed to lead the Lakers to consecutive 50-win seasons. His ability to guide an injury-plagued team past the Rockets in the first round, even without his top scorers, speaks volumes about his coaching acumen.

But beating the reigning champion Thunder? This assignment is different.

For Redick to do the impossible, he must prove that he can outthink a machine.

A cold, precise and relentless machine.

But don’t take our word for it. Take Redick’s. He said it out loud.

“The Thunder are one of the greatest teams ever in NBA history. That’s just the reality, they’re that good,” a brutally honest Redick said. “They are a well-oiled machine.”

Part of what makes that machine move is that the Thunder don’t just beat you — they suffocate you to death. They force turnovers, they clog passing lanes, they switch on the perimeter, and when you try to drive to the basket, they’ll block your shot back to last week.

And as Redick pointed out, they do all of that without committing fouls.

“They’re top five in every disruptive category … and they don’t foul,” Redick said.

Read between the lines, and that’s not analysis, that’s a warning flare to the officials.

It gives off vintage Phil Jackson vibes. Say something to the media loud enough that it echoes into the officiating crew’s subconscious. Redick knows he’ll need every little edge he can get to beat OKC, and in the playoffs, edges don’t exist unless you manufacture them.

Because on paper, there isn’t a single area in which OKC is vulnerable.

“They don’t have a weakness,” Redick admitted.

He’s right. The Thunder are young, fast and deep. They defend without fouling. They can kill you in the half court or in transition. They protect the rim. They shoot 3s at a high clip. They guard the perimeter. And they have the reigning MVP in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who can glide to the paint like a whisper and shoot free throws like clockwork. Around the league, they call him “the foul merchant.”

Redick sees it. Opposing coaches see it. But the question is: Can you stop it?

Redick was asked how the Lakers can win this series. His answer was plain and simple.

“Belief, attention to detail and poise.”

Simple words that hide an impossible assignment. For the Lakers to win this series, they need to shoot greater than 40% from 3. They have to defend at an elite level against the best offense in basketball. They need to limit their live-ball turnovers, and they need to stop the Thunder’s runs before they blink and are down double digits.

They failed at all three in Game 1.

“They’re really good at runs … limiting their runs is going to be really important,” Redick said.

Easier said than done. Like threading a needle in the middle of a hurricane.

Similar to his players on the court, there’s no margin for error for Redick when coaching. Everything he does must be perfect to beat OKC. The timing of his timeouts. His rotation gambles. Trusting the right player to stay on the court for one extra minute. Subbing out the wrong one a possession too late. To win the series, it won’t be about schemes or X’s and O’s. It’s about the little decisions he makes in short five-second windows that will come with consequences that will reverberate for quarters.

Unfortunately for Redick, he could coach brilliantly and the Lakers will still lose in five.

That’s not a failure, either. That’s reality.

The Lakers were swept by the Thunder in the regular season by an average of nearly 30 points per game. It’s the largest margin of victory by any teams in a playoff series in NBA history. That didn’t magically disappear in Game 1 when they lost by 18.

So for Redick, what defines success at the end of this series?

Steal a game and you’ve disrupted the narrative for a day.

Win two and you’ve earned respect.

Push it to seven and we might need to change the Coach of the Year Award winner this season.

Win the series and we can enshrine him into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame tomorrow.

Because if Redick upsets this version of the Thunder without Doncic, then it isn’t just an upset, it’s the best coaching performance of all time. It would be studied and analyzed forever.

Until then, Redick is staring straight into the eye of a storm, clipboard in hand, trying to outthink a well-oiled machine that crushes everything in its path.

City Settles After Allegations of Police Inaction in Tragic Drowning Case

Inset: Sean Bickings. Background: Body camera footage shows Sean Bickings in Arizona’s Tempe Town Lake right before he allegedly drowned in front of police officers (KSAZ/YouTube).

An Arizona woman has reached a settlement with Tempe city officials over a lawsuit claiming police failed to assist her son as he drowned before their eyes. According to police documents and body camera recordings, one officer reportedly stated to the 34-year-old, “I’m not jumping in after you,” moments before he submerged.

On May 28, 2022, at Tempe Town Lake, Sean Bickings cried out, “I’m gonna drown!” while desperately trying to keep himself above water, as detailed in his mother’s lawsuit, which was accessed by Law&Crime.

In response, an officer allegedly shouted, “No you’re not,” back at him.

Bickings insisted, “Yes I am!”

The complaint highlights that another officer, seemingly unconcerned, advised Bickings to swim towards a pylon. When Bickings, out of breath, said he couldn’t make it, the officer allegedly replied, “Okay. I’m not jumping in after you.”

Court records show that the city of Tempe agreed to pay $150,000 on Monday to settle the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Bickings’ mother in May 2023. Her complaint accused two police officers who witnessed the drowning of not only ignoring Bickings’ cries but also restraining and handcuffing his girlfriend when she attempted to save him. Bickings jumped into the lake during an encounter with police.

“The transcripts and unreleased [bodycam] footage … capture the defendant Tempe police officers detaining decedent Bickings’ partner, the only person on the scene displaying remotely any concern for decedent Bickings’ life,” the complaint said. “When decedent Bickings’ partner attempted to rescue him, she was physically restrained by [the officers] and handcuffed … She begged the defendant Tempe police officers to help decedent Bickings as she sat there helplessly handcuffed.”

According to the police transcript and body camera footage, one of the officers allegedly told Bickings’ girlfriend, “You need to chill out.” She responded by saying “I love him” and “please stop being so aggressive,” per the complaint.

“He is all I got,” the woman said. “I can’t lose him. He’s going to die.”

As this was all unfolding, Bickings continued to plead for someone to help him or do something to stop him from drowning, according to the complaint. “Please help me! Please! Please! Please!…I can’t touch,” Bickings allegedly shouted. “Oh God. Please help me! Help me!”

The officers at the scene never attempted to rescue Bickings “in any form,” the complaint charged. He went under soon after and drowned.

Meanwhile, 11 days earlier, officers had no problem rescuing a dog from the lake, according to the complaint. “Bodycam footage shows … two officers holding onto a good Samaritan on the banks of the canal, unconcerned with their proximity to the body of water,” the complaint said. “The defendant Tempe police officers helped to rescue a dog despite the risk of being pulled into the canal themselves. Those Officers were willing to confront that risk for a dog on May 17, 2022; but, on May 28, 2022, the involved defendant Tempe police officers did not even walk to the bank of the Tempe Town Lake while a human being drowned to death in front of them.”

Local officials released a statement after Bickings drowned, saying they would implement changes to improve their water rescue response. The city confirmed the settlement to Law&Crime on Thursday in a statement, saying, “We hope the closure of this litigation brings comfort to those who mourn his loss.”

Texas Man Receives Life Sentence for Running Crack Cocaine Operation Near Schools and Daycares

0

An East Texas man, notorious for orchestrating an illegal drug operation near schools and daycares in Tyler, has been handed a life sentence. Samatraus Forge, the mastermind behind the sale of crack cocaine in the region, faced justice in the 475th District Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to three counts of engaging in organized crime.

The investigation into Forge’s criminal activities began in 2025. A reliable informant tipped off a detective, revealing Forge’s role as the head of a drug-dealing syndicate. This group, consisting of nine individuals, was allegedly under Forge’s command, distributing illegal substances in the community, as detailed in an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit further outlines various instances where the informant exchanged money for crack cocaine with Forge or his associates at homes throughout the Tyler area. These transactions underscored the pervasive reach of Forge’s operation, particularly alarming given their proximity to schools and daycares.

With the court’s decision now rendered, the community can begin to heal, reassured that a significant threat to public safety has been effectively neutralized.

The document explains that there were multiple times when the informant gave money to Forge or his workers and receiving different amounts of crack cocaine at Tyler-area homes.

Officers found meth, crack cocaine, many firearms, scales, baggies, packaging material and a lot of U.S. currency at these homes. The dates of the sales between the informant and the salespersons range from October 2024 to May 2025, the documents detailed.

The named co-conspirators included: Kendrez Johnson, Brittany Tuck, Johnathan Blackshire, Charles Miller, Tommy Spikes, Derrish Graydon, Ronald Calloway, Jannie Brown, Quashunn Mitchell and Jeffery Padilla.

So far, Padilla is the only other co-defendant to be convicted in this case. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison after accepting a guilty plea in January. Records show that Blackshire has not been indicted at this time.

In May 2025, Spikes was found dead at an address that was provided many times by Forge as a “trap” house, or somewhere where narcotics were sold.  Spikes also referred to himself as a 5-2 Hoover Crip, a criminal gang, the document explained.

Information received led detectives to find that many of the people involved in this operation are a part of the 5-2 Hoover Crip gang. Each location where the drugs were sold were within 1,000 feet of elementary schools and daycare facilities, the arrest affidavit said.

Geordie Shore celebrities Holly Hagan and Sophie Kasaei are sharing the joy of pregnancy together, as they recently unveiled heartwarming photographs showcasing their blossoming baby bumps. The duo, close friends since their MTV debut in 2011, are expecting their little ones just a week apart.

This week, the pair have taken a much-needed break, embarking on a shared babymoon adventure in the romantic city of Paris. The trip has provided the perfect backdrop for bonding and celebration as they prepare for motherhood.

In a series of delightful images, Holly and Sophie, now 33 and 36 respectively, can be seen confidently displaying their pregnancy curves. Both donned coordinated outfits featuring stylish black crop tops paired with wide-legged trousers, effortlessly blending comfort and chic fashion.

The reality star duo, who both found fame on the MTV series in 2011, have been enjoying a joint babymoon in Paris this week.

Holly and Sophie, aged 33 and 36, showed off their bare baby bumps in matching black crop tops and wide legged trousers.

In another snap, Holly, who is 36 weeks pregnant, wore the same outfit for dinner while Sophie slipped into a dazzling knitted top and white jeans.

Holly wrote: ‘Bestie’d so hard our babies will be 1 week apart’.

Holly is already a mother to Alpha-Jax, two, and is expecting her second child with husband Jacob Blyth.

While Sophie is set to welcome her first child with TOWIE star Jordan Brooks, with whom she has suffered a slew of fertility problems.

Their getaway comes after Sophie discussed her pregnancy back in March and revealed she is miserable and struggling with ‘gender disappointment’ over her unborn baby.

But after a two-year fertility battle, Sophie held back tears as she admitted she is struggling and ‘feeling low and miserable’. Speaking on her new podcast, Shall We, with co-star Holly , the duo discussed gender disappointment.

Sophie said: ‘This is everything I’ve ever wanted, why do I feel this low and miserable? I just don’t like this feeling like I don’t know what the hell I’m gonna do.’

Later discussing the gender reveal party, Sophie said: ‘This is just amazing and magical but then I was like, “There’s blue”.’

Holly reassured: ‘Gender disappointment is absolutely a thing I see it all the time on social media’. Sophie replied: ‘I think people shouldn’t be knocked down for that.’

It comes as Sophie’s boyfriend Jordan said he is ‘praying for a miracle’ as he battles a brain issue in hospital. The TOWIE star revealed earlier this year that he was admitted to hospital over the weekend and has ‘swelling of the brain’.

In a new update on Friday, Sophie revealed she can now visit Jordan in hospital after it was revealed he isn’t ‘contagious’.

She wrote: ‘As hard as this is I am finally allowed to see my Jords as there’s nothing contagious. His strength is just amazing and we will get through this as a family. Thank you for all your well wishes we are all praying for a more positive day’.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Spark Romance Rumors at Star-Studded Birthday Celebration

Taylor Swift and her fiancé, Travis Kelce, made a stylish appearance at Poppy Delevingne’s 40th birthday celebration, joining a slew of celebrities on Thursday night.

The couple mingled with notable figures such as Georgia May Jagger, Lily James, and Cara Delevingne at the iconic Hart pub in London. The festivities later continued with an exclusive after-party at the upscale BoTree hotel in Marylebone.

Swift looked elegant in a floral midi dress, holding hands with NFL player Kelce as they made their grand entrance, having arrived in the UK earlier in the week.

Before the birthday bash, the couple was spotted attending Sadie Sink’s performance in a West End production of Romeo and Juliet. Videos on TikTok captured the duo giving a standing ovation to the Stranger Things actress during the show on Wednesday.

For the party, Taylor enhanced her ensemble with a chic £1,440 sage green JW Anderson Loafer handbag. Meanwhile, Travis turned heads in a grey embroidered suit, complemented by a silver necklace, as they entered the venue.

Also in attendance was a visibly-pregnant Princess Eugenie and her sister Beatrice, with the former’s baby bump proudly on show in a black dress and electric purple mac as she arrived with her thrilled husband Jack Brooksbank.

Speculation has been rife around Taylor and Travis’ upcoming wedding, with the Daily Mail confirming earlier this month that they are set to tie the knot in New York on July 3.

It was previously speculated that the couple would say ‘I do’ at her lavish Rhode Island estate.

Guests who received an invitation have also been required to RSVP with a signed NDA to help keep details of the nuptials private, per a source.

The exact location of the wedding is not known, but it is said to be an arena or museum-like space.

Last year in August, Kelce popped the big question and Swift shared photos from the intimate engagement on Instagram with the caption: ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.’

The sports player had turned his backyard in Kansas City into a secret garden wonderland, which offered a romantic atmosphere.

He had asked Swift to marry him shortly after they recorded an episode of his New Heights podcast together.

It has also previously been claimed that she has asked some of her celebrity pals to be her bridesmaids, including Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid.

Taylor recently admitted it’s a ‘little weird’ the way her fans try to figure out who she writes about in her songs.

The Life Of A Showgirl star is famous for using her personal life as inspiration for her tracks and her devoted followers spend a lot of time trying to unpick her lyrics in a bid to work out who each song is about.

In an interview with New York Times Magazine, she explained: ‘There’s corners of my fanbase that are going to take things to a really extreme place.

‘There’s nothing that I can do about that. There’s people who are going to try to like, do detective work, figure out the details – who is that about? What is this?

‘When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s sort of like a paternity test. Like: “This song’s about this person.” Because I’m like: “That dude didn’t write the song. I did.”‘

However, Swift is adamant she doesn’t let others’ ‘perception’ of her work influence her.

‘You have to hold tight to your perception of your art and your relationship with it, and then you just have to [think]: “There it goes, hope you like it! If you don’t now, hope you do in five years! And if you never do, then I was doing it for me anyway.”‘

In the interview, Swift went on to reveal her hit track Love Story – which was released in 2008 – was one of the first tracks she wrote without worrying about what other people thought of it.

She said she penned the song when she was 17 and angry with her parents because they refused to let her date an older boy.

Swift also admitted that her real life is still influencing her writing.

One of her most recent tracks, Elizabeth Taylor from The Life of A Showgirl, came to fruition following a passionate rant about her admiration for the late actress during a car journey with her fiance.

The singer described that the tune popped into her head as soon as she got out of the car and she was ‘scrambling’ to record the melody on her phone before she forgot it.

Celebrate the First Anniversary of Chicago’s Own Pope Leo XIV: Events and Highlights

CHICAGO (WLS) — Today marks a significant milestone as Pope Leo celebrates his first anniversary as the leader of the Catholic Church.

To commemorate the occasion, Pope Leo spent the morning in Pompei, Italy, where he warmly greeted throngs of devoted followers.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Often referred to as “Chicago’s pope,” his rise to the papacy continues to be a point of immense pride for the city he hails from.

A variety of events are planned to honor the first American-born pope’s one-year anniversary. Pope Leo, originally from the South Side of Chicago, is celebrated for his local roots and connection to the community.

In honor of this special day, a pilgrimage is taking place, allowing participants to visit Pope Leo’s childhood parish and his former home in Dolton, now recognized as a historical landmark.

Michael Canaris is an Associate Professor at Loyola and an expert on the pope and papal history.

It’s led by the group the Pope Leo XIV American Legacy Foundation.

Pope Leo’s papacy emphasizes unity, community, and truth as an Augustinian. He’s spent much of the past year focusing on peace and unity.

He also made some influential picks for the U.S. church in his first year, including naming former Joliet Bishop Ron Hicks as the Archbishop of New York.

His background here in Chicago include the time Pope Leo studied at the Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park.

He taught at St. Rita High School and is an honorary alumnus there.

And how could we forget, he is a very proud White Sox fan.

The day begins at Christ Our Savior Church with a Mass at 8:30 a.m. in South Holland.
