Jets Select David Bailey as No. 2 Overall Pick in the 2026 NFL Draft

0

David Bailey is set to make his way to Florham Park after all.

On Thursday night, the New York Jets made their choice, selecting Texas Tech’s edge rusher David Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick. This decision concluded months of speculation over whether the Jets would choose Bailey or opt for Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese.

Earlier, the Jets made headlines by canceling Bailey’s pre-draft visit to their training facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. Many interpreted this as a lack of interest in Bailey. However, this was not the case, as coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey placed their confidence in Bailey by selecting him as their top pick.

Bailey, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday in August, is widely regarded as a superior pure pass rusher compared to Reese. Last season, he led the FBS with an impressive 14.5 sacks and a 21.3 percent pressure rate while playing for the Red Raiders. He also ranked second in the FBS with 19.5 tackles for loss and accumulated 81 pressures.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 251 pounds, Bailey is anticipated by scouts to make an immediate impact in the pass-rushing department. His 4.50-second 40-yard dash and explosive initial burst allow him to swiftly navigate around the edge. He began his college career at Stanford before transferring to Texas Tech, where he graduated in less than four years with a degree in Science, Technology, and Society.

The question about Bailey is how well he will hold up against the run. The Jets already have a similar player in 2023 first-round pick Will McDonald. Can they have two players who are designated pass rushers but liabilities against the run? We’ll find out.

Bailey was viewed by some as a safer pick for Glenn, who enters 2026 on the hot seat. While Reese was viewed as more of a projection as a pass rusher, Bailey appears more likely to be an immediate factor rushing the passer.

Bailey is the first of two first-round picks the Jets have on Thursday. They are also slated to pick at No. 16 if they do not trade the pick. The expectation is that they will take a receiver with that spot. The Jets also have two second-round picks (Nos. 33 and 44) on Friday night.

This year’s draft presents an opportunity for Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey to jumpstart their rebuild after a disappointing 3-14 season in 2025. The Jets are in the midst of a 15-year playoff drought, the longest in North American sports.

Bailey becomes the first Texas Tech player drafted by the Jets since 2014 when they took tight end Jace Amaro in the second round.

Analyzing the Shortcomings of “Invincible” Season 4

0

“Invincible,” the animated superhero series on Prime Video, has consistently captivated audiences, but as Looper highlights, Season 4 faced criticism for its occasionally lackluster animation quality. Despite this, the series remains a remarkable feat in animated storytelling. To delve deeper into the season’s shortcomings, you can watch Looper’s detailed analysis.

There’s no question that “Invincible” has carved out a niche as a standout in the superhero genre. Created by Robert Kirkman, the series has garnered acclaim across all its seasons, maintaining a steady trajectory without major missteps—a commendable achievement for a series of such scope and ambition.

However, perfection remains elusive. While Season 4, filled with the formidable Viltrumites, doesn’t completely unravel, opinions may vary on the series’ deviations from its comic book origins. These changes, whether seen as improvements or missteps, highlight areas where the season could have been refined to enhance viewer engagement.

Since its debut in 2021, “Invincible” has chronicled the epic journey of Mark “Invincible” Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun. The series explores his evolution in a universe teeming with aliens, superheroes, and covert organizations. With each season, this universe expands in complexity and detail. Season 4 is no exception, offering a treasure trove of details, from clever sci-fi references to witty audio cues. It’s a season brimming with action-packed sequences and chaos, paving the way for even more thrilling developments in the future.

Nonetheless, there’s always room for growth, and Season 4 of “Invincible” could have hit a few more high notes. For a comprehensive breakdown of what could have been improved, watching Looper’s insightful video is highly recommended.

However, this doesn’t mean that “Invincible” is perfect by any stretch of the imagination. The Viltrumite-filled Season 4 isn’t exactly creaking at the seams, and your mileage may vary on whether the biggest changes “Invincible” Season 4 made from the comics are good or bad — but there are still some things that could have been done in a significantly better way to enhance the experience.

Invincible Season 4 is good, but it could be even better

Since 2021, Amazon Prime Video’s “Invincible” has told the epic story of Mark “Invincible” Grayson (Steven Yeun) and the increasingly convoluted world of aliens, superheroes, and secretive organizations that he has to navigate as he grows into his role as Earth’s strongest protector. His universe keeps getting bigger and more detailed, too. “Invincible” Season 4 is full of small details that you missed, from sneaky sci-fi homages to fun audio drops. It’s packed with action and mayhem, and its events confirm that the show is only going to get bigger and badder in the future.

Yet there’s always room for improvement, and “Invincible” Season 4 did get a few things wrong. Watching Looper’s video above is the ideal way to find out what’s what — and how the season could have been even better.

“Invincible” Season 4 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Tragedy Strikes: 3-Year-Old Dies in Tractor Accident; Father Allegedly Flees Scene, Say BVPD

BRISTOL, Virginia. (WJHL) — A tragic accident claimed the life of a three-year-old in Bristol, Virginia, on Thursday morning when a farm tractor flipped over onto the child, according to the local police department.

The Bristol, Virginia, Police Department (BVPD) announced in a press release that the accident took place around 11:42 a.m. on the 100 block of Davis Alley.

Upon arrival, first responders found the unfortunate scene where the tractor had toppled onto a young boy, identified as three years old.

“Responders from various agencies collaborated to physically lift the tractor, enabling emergency medical personnel to reach the child and immediately commence life-saving efforts,” stated the BVPD.

The child was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical intervention.

An investigation disclosed that the child was reportedly seated on his 21-year-old father, Austin Tyler-Raymond Tester’s, lap while Tester operated the tractor at the time of the incident. The department said Tester left the scene and then delayed notifying emergency services.

Tester was found at his mother’s, Kelly M. Tester, 41, house a few hours later, and it was revealed that she was allegedly assisting in concealing him from law enforcement.

Austin Tester was arrested and charged with Felony Child Abuse and Neglect, as well as an outstanding Probation Violation stemming from a prior drug-related offense. Tester was transported to the Abingdon facility of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority, where he is currently being held without bond.

Kelly Tester was arrested and charged with Obstruction of Justice. She was transported to the Abingdon facility of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority and later released on a $2,000 unsecured bond.

North Carolina Woman Arrested in Connection to Houston Synagogue Attack Plan; Authorities Seek Two More Suspects

0

A woman from North Carolina has been implicated in a suspected scheme aimed at a Texas synagogue, with officials suggesting that a multi-state probe might have averted a possible attack.

Angelina Han Hicks, an 18-year-old resident of Lexington, faces charges for allegedly conspiring to assault members of a Houston synagogue. The court documents reveal that the plan was to “kill as many Jews as possible by driving through a congregation,” according to a report by The Associated Press.

Hicks was apprehended on Wednesday in relation to an alleged plot against the Congregation Beth Israel in Houston. This swift action followed a tip received by investigators, prompting an immediate response.

The FBI’s Charlotte Joint Terrorism Task Force initiated a multi-state inquiry on Tuesday, which culminated in Hicks’ arrest. Additionally, a juvenile was charged in Harris County, Texas, as part of this investigation.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the arrest of Angelina Han Hicks in connection to the alleged synagogue plot in Houston, underscoring the collaborative effort between different law enforcement agencies to address this serious threat.

“This is an exceptional example of when you see something concerning, you say something to law enforcement,” the FBI said in a statement, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.

Investigators uncovered evidence that Hicks and others were allegedly planning what officials described as a “mass-casualty event” at the synagogue, with early concerns the threat could have been imminent.

Alan Martin, the county’s senior assistant district attorney, told the AP there had been “some concern that there could be an imminent event” targeting the Houston synagogue.

Court documents state Hicks is accused of conspiring with two male suspects identified only as “Teegan” and “Angel.” Their whereabouts are unknown, and they have not been arrested, raising concerns about ongoing risk.

District Court Judge Carlton Terry set Hicks’ bond at $10 million, writing that allowing communication between co-conspirators “puts lives at risk.”

Congregation Beth Israel, the oldest Jewish house of worship in Texas, closed Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.

“The safety and security of the Houston Jewish community is of utmost importance to all of us,” the federation said in a statement.

Investigators have not publicly identified a motive for the alleged plot, and Martin said he did not know why the Houston synagogue, located more than 1,000 miles from Hicks’ home in North Carolina, was targeted.

Hicks’ court-appointed attorney, Chad Freeman, told the Houston Chronicle the case remains in its early stages and said her age could be a factor in her defense.

“I anticipate getting numerous experts involved in the case to look at both investigatory and possible forensic matters,” Freeman said.

Hicks’ father, who spoke to Fox affiliate WGHP and was not identified, disputed the allegations and described his daughter as a “good kid.”

“We miss her and we’re sick over this mess,” he said. “And it looks like they just want to get paid because she’s no threat to anyone other than being a fantasy video [game] player.”

He also said Hicks does not have a driver’s license or access to a vehicle, despite allegations the plot involved using a car to carry out an attack. Authorities have not addressed those claims.

The case comes amid heightened concerns about threats targeting Jewish communities.

Last month, authorities said Ayman Ghazali drove a pickup truck into a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, injuring a security guard before fatally shooting himself following an exchange of gunfire. No children or staff inside the building were injured.

Officials said early reporting of suspicious behavior played a key role in disrupting the alleged plot.

Hicks is being held in the Davidson County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court next month.

Trump Directs U.S. Military to Engage Iranian Vessels Disrupting the Strait of Hormuz

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” any small Iranian boats attempting to plant mines in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This announcement came on Thursday, following Iran’s recent actions that demonstrated their capability to disrupt traffic in this vital channel.

Additionally, Trump revealed that the ceasefire in Lebanon would be prolonged by an additional three weeks.

The President’s statement on social media coincided with the U.S. military’s capture of another tanker linked to the illegal transport of Iranian oil. This development has intensified the ongoing tensions with Tehran over the strait, a crucial passageway through which 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas flows during times of peace.

“I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, regardless of size, that is placing mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump declared, emphasizing that U.S. minesweepers are actively clearing the area.

Trump further insisted, “I am hereby ordering that activity to continue, but at an increased intensity, tripling our efforts!”

The decision to extend a pause in fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon came during a meeting at the White House between the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the United States.

Meanwhile, it was still unclear when, or if, the U.S. and Iran would meet again in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, where mediators are trying to bring the countries together to reach a diplomatic deal ending that conflict.

Negotiations initially planned this week have not happened. Iran insists it will not attend until the U.S. ends its blockade on Iranian ports and ships. The White House insists it will not take part until Tehran opens the strait to international traffic.

Pope Leo XIV, returning home from a trip to Africa, urged the U.S. and Iran to return to talks to end the war.

Footage shows US forces on deck of tanker

The Defense Department released video footage earlier Thursday of U.S. forces on the deck of the Guinea-flagged oil tanker Majestic X, which was seized in the Indian Ocean.

The footage emerged a day after Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard attacked three cargo ships in the strait, capturing two of them, in an assault that raised new concerns about the safety of shipping through the waterway.

The powerful head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei, said three “violating ships” in the strait were “subject to enforcement” Wednesday.

“The show of strength by the armed forces of Islamic Iran in the Strait of Hormuz is a source of pride,” he wrote Thursday on X, claiming the Americans “lack the courage” to approach the strait.

Ship-tracking data showed the Majestic X in the Indian Ocean between Sri Lanka and Indonesia, roughly the same location as the oil tanker Tifani, seized earlier by American forces. It had been bound for Zhoushan, China.

Majestic X previously was named Phonix and had been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2024 for smuggling Iranian crude oil in contravention of U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

There was no immediate response from Iran about the seizure.

Trump claims leadership rift in Iran

Trump this week extended a ceasefire to give the Iranian leadership more time to come up with a “unified proposal” on ending the war, while maintaining an American blockade of Iranian ports.

In a post Thursday, Trump claimed a leadership rift between moderates and hard-liners was confounding Iran. “Iran is having a very hard time figuring out who their leader is! They just don’t know!” Trump said.

Trump has repeatedly said during the ceasefire that began April 8 that his team is dealing with Iranian officials who want to make a deal, while acknowledging that his decision to kill several top leaders has come with complications.

Iran’s president and its parliament speaker posted statements on social media declaring the country has no hard-liners or moderates.

“We are all Iranians and revolutionaries,” they said.

A spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said Trump’s claim of a leadership rift was a “deflection.” Other Iranian officials said on social media that the country was united.

Trump, while speaking to reporters at the White House, pushed back against questions about the conflict exceeding the four-to-six-week timeline that he and aides previously set for the war.

“I don’t want to rush myself,” Trump said, adding that the U.S. “took the country out” militarily in the first four weeks.

“Now all we’re doing is sitting back and seeing what deal” can be made. “And if they don’t want to make a deal, then I’ll finish it up militarily,” Trump said.

He said he would not use a nuclear weapon against Iran.

In other developments, three aircraft carriers were in the region after the USS George H.W. Bush arrived in the Indian Ocean. One carrier was in the Arabian Sea and another was in the Red Sea, military officials said.

Second round of talks between Lebanon and Israel

Trump said a second round of talks between Israel and Lebanon in Washington “went very well” and resulted in a ceasefire extension for Israel and the Hezbollah militant group.

“The United States is going to work with Lebanon in order to help it protect itself from Hezbollah,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

The latest war between Israel and Hezbollah started after Israel and the U.S. launched attacks on Iran and the Tehran-backed militants fired rockets into northern Israel. The ceasefire first took effect for a 10-day period starting Friday.

Underscoring the truce’s fragility, Israel’s military said it struck missile launchers in Lebanon that had fired into its borders. Hezbollah said it fired at the Israeli town of Shtula in response to Israeli attacks on the Lebanese village of Yater.

Lebanon’s public health ministry said an Israeli airstrike killed three people further north, in the area of Nabatiya. The Israeli military said it had killed three militants who had launched a missile toward an Israeli warplane.

Each side has accused the other of breaching the truce.

Trump reiterated that the U.S. continues to demand that Iran stop it’s backing of Iranian-allied militias in the Mideast, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, as part of any deal between Washington and Tehran to end the U.S. war on Iran.

“Yeah, they’ll have to cut that,” Trump said to a reporter’s question about aiding Hezbollah. “That’s a must.”

Threats to shipping persist

Since the Feb. 28 start of the war between Iran, Israel and the United States, over 30 ships have come under attack in the waters of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

The threat of attack, rising insurance premiums and other fears have stopped traffic from moving through the strait. Iran’s ability to restrict traffic through the strait, which leads from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, has proved a major strategic advantage.

Jakob Larsen, the head of maritime security for BIMCO, the largest international association representing shipowners, said in a note Thursday that most shipping companies need a stable ceasefire and assurances from both sides of the conflict that the strait is safe for transit.

The threat of mines, he wrote, was a “particular concern” if traffic might return to normal levels one day.

Trump Announces Three-Week Extension of Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire

0

President Trump has decided to prolong the tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon by an additional three weeks as the United States seeks to advance peace negotiations with Iran.

This announcement follows a meeting in the Oval Office where Trump convened with top officials from both Israel and Lebanon.

On Truth Social, Trump expressed, “The United States will collaborate with Lebanon to bolster its defenses against Hezbollah.”

He further declared, “The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended for THREE WEEKS.”

The Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon have been a significant hurdle in the efforts to resolve the tensions between Iran and the United States.

A scheduled summit this week between Vice President JD Vance and his Iranian counterparts in Islamabad, Pakistan did not take place.

Also at the Oval Office meeting were Vance, Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, and Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa.

Trump added that he is looking forward to meeting in person with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun ‘in the near future..’

The latest war started when Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel, two days after Israel and the U.S. launched attacks on Iran. Israel responded with widespread bombardment of Lebanon and a ground invasion in which it captured dozens of towns and villages along the border.

Israel´s military currently occupies a buffer zone stretching as much as 10 kilometers (6 miles) into southern Lebanon. Israel says it aims to remove the threat of short-range rockets and anti-tank missiles being fired toward northern Israel.

Hezbollah has rejected the talks. Wafiq Safa, a high-ranking member of the militant group´s political council, told The Associated Press that it will not abide by any agreements made during the direct talks.

Despite this, the talks are a major step for two countries with no diplomatic relations that officially have been at war since Israel´s inception in 1948.

The Lebanese government hopes the talks will pave the way to a permanent end to the war. While Iran has set ending the wars in Lebanon and the region as a condition for talks with the U.S., Lebanon insists on representing itself.

Since the ceasefire went into effect last week, there have been multiple violations by both side sides.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Trump escalated his efforts to cut off Iran from using the Strait of Hormuz by demanding the US Navy ‘shoot and kill’ any Iranian boat laying mines in the Persian Gulf.

The President wrote on Truth Social on Thursday morning: ‘I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be (Their naval ships are ALL, 159 of them, at the bottom of the sea!), that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz.

‘There is to be no hesitation. Additionally, our mine “sweepers” are clearing the Strait right now. I am hereby ordering that activity to continue, but at a tripled up level!’

US forces also seized another tanker caught smuggling the regime’s oil just one day after Tehran seized two vessels.

Shortly before the President’s post, the Pentagon released videos of US naval forces boarding the Iranian-linked oil tanker, Majestic X, in the Indian Ocean. The ship was reportedly carrying oil produced by the Iranian regime.

‘We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate,’ the Pentagon wrote on X.

The Pentagon warned that sanctioned actors cannot use international waters as cover, vowing to keep blocking ‘illicit actors and their vessels’ from operating freely at sea.

Global oil prices began to skyrocket on Thursday as concerns grew that the truce between the US and Iran would collapse. The price of Brent crude rose above $103 a barrel on Thursday morning, up 1.3 percent.

Two Decatur Residents Charged with Attempted Murder in Connection to 2025 Shooting

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — In a troubling incident from last fall in Decatur, two men are facing serious charges of attempted murder for allegedly firing shots at a vehicle carrying passengers on their way to attend a family vigil and balloon release.

Sha’ron J. Browning, 22, was apprehended on April 15, 2026, and is charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon. Michael A. Swanson, also 22, faces identical charges, along with an extra count for unlawful possession of a firearm as a repeat felony offender.

Mike Vrabel Speaks at NFL Draft 2026 Amid Buzz Over Dianna Russini Photos

0

Amidst the backdrop of a recent photo leak, Mike Vrabel addressed eager audiences at the 2026 NFL Draft. The images, published by Page Six, depicted Vrabel sharing an intimate moment with sports journalist Dianna Russini at a New York City bar, a scene captured six years prior.

At the time the March 2020 photographs were taken, Vrabel was still married to his wife, Jen Vrabel. Earlier this week, the New England Patriots coach announced he would be taking a temporary break, following another set of images that surfaced showing him and Russini sharing a tender moment at an Arizona resort in March.

“I have made a promise to my family, this organization, and my team to be the best version of myself,” Vrabel, now 50, shared with ESPN.

He further explained, “To fulfill this promise, I am committed to beginning counseling this weekend. It’s a decision I’ve considered thoroughly and one I would recommend to any player under similar circumstances.”

While Vrabel assured he would remain in communication with the Patriots’ team, he confirmed that he would be absent from Day 3 of the NFL Draft, set to take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, over the weekend.

Instead, he would be outside of Massachusetts with his college sweetheart, whom he wed in 1999, and their two sons.

In light of the news, the Patriots released the following statement to Page Six:

“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being. Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team and our fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to follow through on that commitment.

“We are confident in the leadership and communication Mike has established with our personnel staff throughout this pre-draft process. While he will not be present at the facility on Saturday, we know the draft evaluations are complete and [football executive] Eliot Wolf and his personnel staff are prepared to execute our draft as planned this weekend.”

The Patriots hold 11 selections and have the 31st overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Earlier this week, Mike appeared at a pre-draft presser at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where he finally broke his silence on the recent headlines.

He spoke about the “difficult conversations” he’d had with his family, calling the talks “positive and productive.”

The retired outside linebacker vowed to bring his loved ones — as well as his colleagues and players — the “best version” of himself “going forward.”

He added, “In order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me.”

Mike dodged questions about the scandal after his speech, telling press, “I appreciate your job and what you guys have got to do, but I have to make my comments and what I answer about our football team.”

When photos of Mike and Russini, 43, first surfaced on April 7, the latter claimed, “The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.”

She subsequently resigned from the New York Times’ the Athletic, writing in her resignation letter, “I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”

Vrabel, for his part, insisted, “These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable.”

The two claimed they were with friends, although multiple eyewitnesses told us otherwise.

Page Six released additional pictures on Wednesday of Vrabel and Russini having breakfast at the luxury Arizona hotel.

As for the 2020 photos published Thursday, Vrabel — in addition to appearing to kiss Russini — sat close to the reporter at the Tribeca Tavern bar with his hand on her leg and arm.

Russini was six months shy of walking down the aisle with then-fiancé Kevin Goldschmidt at the time, with whom she now shares two sons.

“They were kissing and they were all over each other,” a source told us. “They were [giving each other] pecks, a bunch of pecks constantly.”

Reps for Vrabel and Russini have yet to comment on the latest headline-making snaps.

Ex-Pre-K Teacher from Ponte Vedra Sentenced for Child Sex Crime: DOJ Announces Verdict

0

In a troubling turn of events, Tony Leroy Bartley Jr., a former pre-kindergarten teacher from Ponte Vedra Beach, found himself on the wrong side of the law after falling into an FBI sting operation. Bartley, who is 37 years old and hails from Jacksonville, was arrested in August 2025. His arrest came after he engaged in sexually explicit conversations and attempted to lure someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl into a sexual liaison. Unbeknownst to him, the “girl” was in fact an undercover federal agent.

In a court ruling that underscores the gravity of his actions, Bartley was handed a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. This sentence, delivered in January after Bartley entered a guilty plea, was announced by the Department of Justice. Beyond his prison term, Bartley faces a decade of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes.

The case began to unfold in July 2025, when Bartley, operating under the username “keven,” initiated contact with the undercover agent on a social media platform whose name has not been disclosed. During their exchanges, the agent presented themselves as a young teenager. Bartley, in response, moved the conversation into a sexual context, proposing to exchange explicit messages. The Department of Justice detailed that Bartley not only described the sexual acts he wished to carry out but also sent a sexually explicit photograph, sealing his fate when the truth of the situation was revealed.

The DOJ says that Bartley, under the username “keven,” exchanged messages with an undercover FBI agent on an undisclosed social media platform in July 2025.

When the agent claimed to be a 13-year-old girl, Bartley suggested that they text sexually. Through the exchanged messages, the DOJ said Bartley described “sexual acts he wanted to perform” and sent an explicit photo.

According to the DOJ, Bartley was arrested by FBI agents on Aug. 5, 2025. During an interview, Bartley is said to have confirmed that he had exchanged messages having to do with sexual activity with someone underage.

“I should have stopped at 13, and that’s on me,” Bartley said.

Trump Administration Intensifies Efforts Against Chinese Firms Allegedly Misusing US AI Technology

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has announced plans to intensify measures against foreign technology firms that exploit U.S. artificial intelligence models, with a specific focus on China as it continues to close the technological gap with the United States.

In a memo released on Thursday, Michael Kratsios, the president’s chief science and technology adviser, accused foreign actors, especially those based in China, of orchestrating large-scale efforts to extract capabilities from leading U.S. AI systems. Kratsios highlighted these activities as deliberate attempts to undermine American innovation and expertise.

To counter these efforts, Kratsios indicated that the administration will collaborate with American AI companies to identify and defend against such activities and explore punitive measures for those involved.

This memo is timely, as China is increasingly challenging the U.S. in the field of artificial intelligence. The White House emphasizes the importance of maintaining U.S. leadership in AI to set global standards and secure both economic and military advantages. However, a recent report by Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered AI suggests that the performance gap between top AI models in the U.S. and China has substantially narrowed.

In response, the Chinese embassy in Washington expressed opposition to what it described as the U.S.’s unjustified suppression of Chinese companies.

“China has always been committed to promoting scientific and technological progress through cooperation and healthy competition. China attaches great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights,” said Liu Pengyu, the embassy spokesperson.

Kratsios’ memo also came the same week that the House Foreign Affairs Committee offered unanimous, bipartisan support for a bill to set up a process to identify foreign actors that extract “key technical features” of closed-source, U.S.-owned AI models and to punish them with measures including sanctions.

“Model extraction attacks are the latest frontier of Chinese economic coercion and theft of U.S. intellectual property,” said Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., who sponsored the bill. “American AI models are demonstrating transformative cyber capabilities, and it is critical we prevent China from stealing these technological advancements.”

Last year, the Chinese start-up DeepSeek rattled U.S. markets when it released a large language model that could compete with U.S. AI giants but at a fraction of the cost.

David Sacks, then serving as President Donald Trump’s AI and crypto adviser, suggested that DeepSeek copied U.S. models. “There’s substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI’s models,” Sacks said then.

In a February letter to U.S. lawmakers, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, made similar allegations and said China should not be allowed to advance “autocratic AI” by “appropriating and repackaging American innovation.”

Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, in February accused DeepSeek and two other China-based AI laboratories of engaging in campaigns to “illicitly extract Claude’s capabilities to improve their own models” using the distillation technique that “involves training a less capable model on the outputs of a stronger one.”

Anthropic said distillation can be a legitimate way to train AI systems but it’s a problem when competitors “use it to acquire powerful capabilities from other labs in a fraction of the time, and at a fraction of the cost, that it would take to develop them independently.”

But it can go both ways. San Francisco-based startup Anysphere, maker of the popular coding tool Cursor, recently acknowledged that its latest product was based on an open-source model made by Chinese company Moonshot AI, maker of the chatbot Kimi.

Kyle Chan, a fellow at the Washington-based think tank The Brookings Institution and an expert on China’s technology development, said it will be like “looking for needles in an enormous haystack” to separate unauthorized distillation from the vast volume of legitimate requests for data. But information sharing and coordination among U.S. AI labs could help, and the federal government can play an important role in facilitating anti-distillation efforts across labs, Chan said.

It’s hard to assess how far the House bill can go, but Chan said Trump may not want to rock the boat with Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of a planned mid-May state visit to Beijing.
