Beware the Return: UGA Researchers Alert to the Dangerous Resurgence of the Asian Needle Ant

GEORGIA (WRBL) — University of Georgia researchers are issuing a warning to residents in the Southeastern United States about the resurgence of an invasive ant species that poses significant risks.

The Asian needle ant, scientifically known as Brachyponera chinensis, may measure only 3/16 of an inch in length, but it can lead to serious problems, particularly for individuals allergic to ant and bee stings.

According to the USDA, the Asian needle ant is a stinging invasive species that demands attention. The ant was first discovered in Georgia during the 1930s. Research into this species began nearly two decades ago, and since then, it has spread extensively along the East Coast. The threat it poses becomes more pronounced as temperatures rise and outdoor activities increase.

Dan Suiter, an Orkin Distinguished Professor of Urban Entomology at the University of Georgia, explained the potential dangers: “There are likely individuals in Georgia and across the Southeast who have been stung, ended up in the hospital, and remained unaware of what caused their distress. The ant is diminutive, just 3/16 of an inch, and while gardening, you might get stung. Ten minutes later, you’re in distress and find yourself in the hospital.”

“There are probably people in Georgia and throughout the Southeast who have been stung, wound up in the hospital, didn’t know what happened to them,” said Dan Suiter, an Orkin Distinguished Professor of Urban Entomology at UGA. “Because, again, the ant is tiny, little 3/16 of an inch thing, and you’re working in the garden, you get stung and ten minutes later you’re in distress and you wind up in the hospital.”

Asian needle ants typically appear in old, hardwood habitats, like big oak trees, leaf litter, dead logs, firewood and tree bark. Researchers say they can also appear under rocks, stones and areas with high moisture.

Unlike other types of ants, the Asian needle ant does not build mounds or establish foraging trails (lines of ants you can see).

While the needle ants aren’t aggressive, their stings can be life-threatening.

“If you or somebody in your family suffers from anaphylaxis, it’s something that you should know, whether it’s on your property or not. Because when you’re out gardening, that’s when you’re probably most likely to come in contact with that ant – is in the summertime when we’re out. And that’s the time when the ant is most active.” Suiter says.

University of Georgia officials say that identification of these ants is critical. Individuals can send a picture or a specimen to a local UGA extension office, whose agents can further help with identification.

Urgent Alert: Deadly Ant Species Threatens the Southeast – UGA Researchers Sound the Alarm

GEORGIA (WRBL) — Researchers from the University of Georgia are sounding the alarm for Southeast U.S. residents about the resurgence of a troublesome invasive ant species.

Known as the Asian needle ant, or Brachyponera chinensis, this tiny insect measures just 3/16 of an inch but poses significant threats, particularly to individuals allergic to ants and bees.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture identifies the Asian needle ant as an invasive species that poses stinging hazards.

First identified in Georgia in the 1930s, the Asian needle ant has been the subject of research for nearly two decades. Over the years, it has spread across the East Coast, becoming more problematic as warmer weather draws people outside.

“There are likely people across Georgia and the Southeast who have been stung and ended up in the hospital without knowing what hit them,” explained Dan Suiter, an Orkin Distinguished Professor of Urban Entomology at the University of Georgia. “Because the ant is so small—only 3/16 of an inch—you might be gardening, get stung, and find yourself in distress and hospitalized just ten minutes later.”

Revitalize Your Arm Strength After 55: 5 Chair Exercises That Outshine Traditional Weight Training

0

Having strong arms is essential for smoothly carrying out daily activities and enjoying hobbies.

If your goal is to develop strong, toned arms, you’ll be glad to know you can achieve this right in the comfort of your home. All it takes is a solid chair and a few key resistance tools to get started. As you grow older, maintaining arm strength becomes vital for everyday tasks and leisure activities, such as gardening, lugging groceries, and rising from the ground. To help you regain arm strength more efficiently than conventional weight training, especially after age 55, we’ve compiled five simple chair exercises.

For those who find weightlifting unappealing or unsafe, chair yoga offers an excellent alternative.

“I have numerous clients who prefer chair yoga and strengthening exercises because they focus on reality rather than preconceived notions,” shares Barbara Smith, RDN, a Nutritional Consultant & Certified Fitness Coach at Lasta. With her combined expertise in nutrition and physical training, she advocates for a comprehensive approach to health and wellness. “Often, seated controlled movements can elicit more muscle response than standing exercises, which require balance compensation in the background. People are frequently pleasantly surprised by this discovery.”

“I’ve got plenty of clients who enjoy chair yoga and chair strengthening because they train based on how things really are rather than what they think they are supposed to be like. This distinction becomes extremely important after age 55,” explains Barbara Smith, RDN, Nutritional Consultant & Certified Fitness Coach at Lasta, who combined her experience in nutrition and physical training to provide a holistic approach to health and wellness. “Sometimes, controlled movements while seated yield more muscular responses than standing exercises with balance compensation taking place behind the scenes and people are often pleasantly surprised by this realization.”

Below, Smith shares five productive chair exercises to add to your arm day routine.

Seated Overhead Press

  1. Begin sitting tall on a sturdy chair with your feet flat on the floor and your core engaged.
  2. Hold a pair of lightweight dumbbells at shoulder level, palms facing forward.
  3. Press the weights straight overhead without locking out your elbows.
  4. Gradually lower the weights back to the start position.

Chair Pushups

  1. Find a stable chair and place your hands on it, shoulder-width apart.
  2. Begin by walking your legs back so you’re at a straight incline from your head to your heels.
  3. Keep your legs together and rise onto the balls of your feet. Engage your core and keep your gaze forward.
  4. Bend your elbows to lower your body until your chest lines up with your elbows.
  5. Return back to straight arms.

Seated Resistance Band Row

  1. Begin seated on the bed with your legs extended.
  2. Loop the resistance band around both feet, holding one end in each hand.
  3. Sit tall and pull both hands toward your hips, squeezing your shoulder blades together.
  4. Slowly return.

Seated Tricep Dips

  1. Begin sitting at the edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Place your hands on the edge of the seat and lift your tailbone off the chair.
  3. Walk your feet away until your knees, hips, and torso form 90-degree angles.
  4. Activate your core and keep your shoulders relaxed as you bend your elbows and lower your body just below the seat.
  5. Press back up until your arms are straight, engaging your triceps as you do so.

Seated Lateral Raise

  1. Begin seated with your feet flat on the floor and a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing in.
  2. Slowly lift your arms out to the side until they reach shoulder height.
  3. Use control to lower.

Washington Men Lived Decades Under Fake Identities Stolen from Deceased Minors, Police Reveal

0

In a perplexing case unfolding in Washington state, two men in their 50s stand accused of living under stolen identities for over 30 years. Authorities are now seeking public assistance to uncover the truth about their real identities.

The men, who have been going by the names Tim Seidenfeld and Glenn Scotzin since the 1990s, are believed to have assumed the identities of two Idaho children who tragically died in separate incidents during the early 1970s. This information was revealed by the Pasco Police Department in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The investigation has been described as a complex tapestry of identity theft spanning several states. Surprisingly, police are not on a manhunt for the duo, as their current whereabouts are already known. Instead, the focus is on piecing together the details of their lives under these assumed names.

“We know exactly where they are,” remarked Pasco Police Lieutenant Tom Groom to the Tri-City Herald. “Our goal is to gather information about how they have managed to live under these identities for so many years.”

Authorities hope that by shedding light on the men’s unusual existence, they can finally solve this decades-old mystery. The case serves as a chilling reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to in order to elude their pasts.

The men appear to have surfaced in Salem, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, in 1990, shortly after assuming the identities. From there, they left a faint trail across the country, with ties to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Texas and California.

Police believe both men may have worked in the telecommunications industry in the early 1990s, but say no official employment records exist, deepening the mystery.

“Due to the length of time these individuals have operated under stolen identities, traditional identification methods have proven to be challenging,” police said.

Authorities have not said whether the men are suspected of other crimes, but the unusual case has raised questions about how they were able to disappear into someone else’s life for more than 30 years.

A family in Washington, D.C. is mourning the loss of their teenage son, described as “sheltered,” after he and a friend were fatally shot while getting lunch from a food truck, authorities report.

The victims, Tyale Coates, 14, and Mhilo Young, 12, were tragically killed earlier this month, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide.

The incident occurred on April 14 at approximately 3:25 p.m. The two boys were at a food truck located on the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue in the northeast section of Washington, D.C., a neighborhood where both were residents.

Tyale’s family shared with local ABC affiliate WJLA that he had a strict 7:30 p.m. curfew and was not typically permitted to be outside unsupervised in his neighborhood. His mother usually accompanied him everywhere, but recently his parents had allowed him the newfound independence of taking the bus home from school.

On the day of the shooting, Tyale had asked his mother for permission to visit the new food truck nearby to grab something to eat, a request she granted.

“He had permission to be where he was at, and he just got there, ’cause I was just on the phone with his mom when he asked,” his aunt, Morgan Wingate, told the TV station.

Seconds after he got his food, multiple people started firing guns at someone in the parking lot, police said. Sixty shots were fired, and Tyale and Mhilo were both struck.

Officers arrived on the scene to find both boys with gunshot wounds. Tyale was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mhilo was brought to an area hospital, where he died.

Wingate said Tyale’s mother called her. “She was screaming. She was screaming,” she recounted. “I’m like, ‘what?’ She was like, ‘They shot my son.’”

Tyale’s family said he loved to fish with his uncles and dad and was just starting to learn how to drive.

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a $50,000 reward “for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible” for the homicides. Anyone with information is asked to contact them at (202) 727-9099.

Clayface Movie Trailer Sparks Unanimous Buzz: Here’s Why Fans Can’t Stop Talking!

0

While fans eagerly await updates on “The Batman — Part II,” an intriguing detour into Gotham’s dark corners is set to debut later this year. The first teaser for “Clayface,” focusing on the intriguing shape-shifting villain from Batman’s rogues’ gallery, has dropped, promising a genuine horror experience from DC Studios. Looper’s video has compiled some initial fan reactions, and here’s a closer look at the buzz surrounding this new venture.

The teaser’s final scene has left many viewers stunned, featuring Matt Hagen, portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries, in a bathtub, dramatically wiping his face clean of features. This unexpected twist caught many off guard. On Reddit, user u/Varvara-Sidorovna shared their surprise: “I properly jumped at it, I wasn’t expecting that at all.” Clearly, “Clayface” is carving its own niche, offering a fresh take that stands out amidst the often formulaic superhero genre.

As audiences patiently wait for any news regarding “The Batman — Part II,” we’re getting a very different trip to Gotham later this year. The first teaser for “Clayface,” centered on the shape-shifting Batman villain, is out, and fans are stoked to get a bona fide horror offering from DC Studios. Looper’s video above has collected a small sampling of reactions to the trailer, but here’s an additional breakdown of what folks are saying.

Despite the success of other villain-centric comic book movies, like “Joker” and “Venom,” one wouldn’t automatically assume Clayface could also carry his own feature-length story. But fans think this looks incredible. Under the YouTube video, @RhinoDinoSino wrote, “Was NOT expecting this level of grotesque imagery.” For @leeshwan903, it’s a worthy substitute for another Batman film: “I’m actually not all that mad about the fact that this is how we get introduced to Batman’s corner of the DCU.”

The year 2026 is packed with anticipated comic book films, including “Supergirl,” “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, “Clayface” promises a more subdued yet unique experience, and judging by the enthusiastic online reactions, fans are eagerly embracing this novel direction. For a deeper dive into the positive feedback, Looper’s video offers further insights into the excitement generated by the “Clayface” trailer.

The Clayface trailer is a dream come true for Batman: The Animated Series fans

DC going from the fun adventure vibes of “Superman” and “Supergirl” to pure horror in “Clayface” is definitely a shift. The screenplay for “Clayface” was co-written by horror maestro Mike Flanagan, who crafted several terrifying Netflix miniseries like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass.” For many, like Redditor u/MisfitAnthem, that’s enough of a reason to assume it’ll be great: “I still cannot f***ing believe we are getting a Mike Flanagan-penned Clayface movie.” YouTuber @Megaproductions302 shared a similar sentiment: “The fact that Mike Flanagan wrote this film and adapted the Matt Hagen storyline from [‘Batman: The Animated Series’] has me really excited.”

To general audiences, Clayface may seem like an odd pick for a solo movie. But for many, it’s a chance to relive one of the best episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” — “Feat of Clay.” It’s a grotesque installment, especially for a kids’ show, that gets into the psyche of a villain who lost everything and now has no identity of his own. If “Feat of Clay” is the PG origin of Clayface, then the upcoming film is the R-rated version fans like @righteousrawb7225 can enjoy as adults: “Ever since the 90s animated series, I have always wanted to see Clayface in live action.”

2026 has many comic book movies on the docket, like “Supergirl,” “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and “Avengers: Doomsday.” But “Clayface” offers something more low-key and different, and based on online reactions, fans are hungry for something new. Just watch Looper’s video for even more positive reactions to the “Clayface” trailer.

Meghan Markle’s Surprising Marketing Strategy Shift: A PR Move with Personal Connections

0

When the Duchess of Sussex launched her inaugural As Ever jam collection, it was accompanied by a wave of PR packages sent to several high-profile celebrities.

However, with the release of her Mother’s Day collection yesterday—featuring £47 candles inspired by her children—the distribution list seems to have been considerably narrowed.

Initially, Meghan’s PR gifts reached her A-list acquaintances such as Kris Jenner, Chrissy Teigen, and Zoe Saldana. Now, it seems the ‘Mother’s Day Edit’ is being shared with a more select group who have smaller social media followings.

Among the recipients this time is Meghan’s close friend Kelly McKee Zajfen, who praised the Duchess as the ‘best mama’ to her 43,000 Instagram followers.

Also included were Meghan’s friend and Pilates instructor Heather Dorak, with a following of 12,000, and Adrianna Barrionuevo Brach, an editor for the Today show, who has nearly 7,000 followers.

A select number of medium-level American influencers, including Carly (@mycityapartment), who has more than 460,000 followers, and Kristina Zias, with nearly 350,000 followers on Instagram, were also on the list.

The marketing materials for the two candles mention Archie and Lilibet’s royal titles, as Meghan unveiled Signature Candle No. 506, named after her son’s birthdate of May 6, and Signature Candle No. 604, an homage to Princess Lilibet’s June 4 birthday.

Carly shared a photo of the £115 box from As Ever, including gourmet chocolates, on her Instagram Stories and tagged Meghan’s lifestyle brand.

The box included a handwritten letter from Meghan, who said ‘I developed the scents over the last year so that every note melded together to take me right back to a special memory with them’.

‘I can light the candle, close my eyes and I’m right there,’ Meghan’s message read. ‘The memorable moments of motherhood.’

The box also included chocolates from Los Angeles brand Compartés, as Meghan wrote ‘Enjoy every bite’.

‘Thank you for welcoming As Ever into your home, and for allowing us to not just be a part of your moments, but to be part of your memories,’ the letter read.

The scented candle for Prince Archie features ‘ginger, neroli, and cashmere’ in what appears to be a nod to her six-year-old son’s red hair, and promises to bring a ‘warm, comforting scent’ for a ‘soft familiar ease into the room’.

Meanwhile, the candle inspired by her daughter Lilibet, four, is made with ‘amber, water lily and santal’, encompassing a ‘light, floral scent’ which will bring ‘a sense of brightness and openness to the home’.

The products are part of As Ever’s tilt towards more ‘expanded fragrance and apothecary offerings’, Meghan told Town & Country.

‘The goal for As Ever has always been finding ways we can bring beauty and ease to your life – as a host, as a guest, as a friend, as a mom,’ she said.

‘In whatever way you show up, I want As Ever to make it feel special. It began with a pot of jam, and a collection for your kitchen and now we are excited that the collection will soon expand into other parts of your home. It’s a very special time and I’m proud of what we are creating.’

According to People, the Mother’s Day edit will also feature three ‘bundles’, including one $156 (£115) set with the candles, chocolates made in collaboration with Compartés and specially designed matchboxes.

In 2024, it was revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan adopted the Sussex title as a surname for their children as they ‘unify’ their family – making Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, known as Archie Sussex and Lilibet Sussex, rather than Mountbatten-Windsor.

It is thought to be in keeping with the way Harry was known as Captain Wales while in the army.

The launch comes in the aftermath of Harry and Meghan’s ‘quasi-royal’ tour of Australia, which Meghan posted about on Instagram.

Directing followers to read more about the trip on their site, Sussex.com, the duchess shared a montage of their four-day trip Down Under.

‘Australia, you have our hearts,’ she said.

Set to Love Is In The Air by Aussie singer John Paul Young, the post featured clips from official visits as well as snippets of more intimate moments, including a shot of Harry tucking into his dinner and Meghan touching up her make-up.

It comes as last week the Duchess of Sussex asked superfans if it was finally time to invest in herself after spending ‘all her life investing in women’ during a VIP meet-and-greet event in Sydney.

Meghan was speaking to a private audience at Her Best Life retreat on Friday as her trip to Australia with Prince Harry came to an end.

Women had paid up to £1,700 for VIP tickets to the event, which included the opportunity to sit in the front row of the Q&A and take a photograph with the duchess.

‘I’ve spent all my life investing in women, can I finally invest in me?’ Meghan asked the audience during her 90-minute appearance on stage.

She also told the crowd her experience in the public eye had been ‘very difficult’ but that people’s criticism of her had to do with their own ‘projections’.

She said the last decade, during which she celebrated happy moments such as her wedding and the birth of her two children, had been tainted by the vicious attacks.

Meghan said motherhood had taught her to have perspective and patience, something she needed, ‘given what our life is like’.

It is understood that organisers of the event, which was held at the InterContinental hotel near to Coogee beach, had paid £120,000 for Meghan’s appearance.

Tickets included a gala dinner of Hiramasa kingfish tostada, vannella burrata, riverina Angus beef tenderloin, free range chicken, coconut crumble and mango and passionfruit pavlova.

Prince Harry was also in attendance, and rose to his feet as his wife entered the room to greet her with a kiss and help her onto the stage.

Meghan wore a cashmere tank from Australian brand Scanlan Theodore paired with beige trousers and nude heels for the Q&A chat.

Trump Directs Navy to Target Iran’s Mine-Laying Vessels in Strategic Strait of Hormuz (Watch Now)

0

In a bold move, President Trump has issued an order to the U.S. Navy, instructing them to “shoot and kill” any Iranian vessels that attempt to lay mines and obstruct trade in the critical maritime passage of the Strait of Hormuz. This directive underscores the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, further straining their already fragile relations.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments, has long been a geopolitical flashpoint. Iran’s actions have been perceived as a direct threat to international trade and the free movement of goods. President Trump’s decisive order reflects the serious implications of any disruption in this strategically significant waterway.

This development comes amid a series of confrontational exchanges between the U.S. and Iran, with each nation asserting its dominance in the region. The U.S. Navy, already on high alert, is prepared to respond swiftly to any provocations that may arise from Iranian actions.

The President’s order has been met with various reactions from international observers and policymakers. Some view it as a necessary step to maintain peace and protect global trade routes, while others caution against the potential for conflict escalation.

As the situation unfolds, the world watches closely, understanding the far-reaching consequences of any military engagement in this sensitive region. The outcome of this standoff will likely have lasting impacts on international diplomacy and global economic stability.

New Tennessee Initiative Proposes Foreign Transfer Tax to Boost Child Care Funding

In Nashville, Tennessee, numerous families grapple with the high costs and limited availability of child care. Recently, a new legislative measure has been approved by both the House and Senate, aiming to launch a pilot program that seeks to enhance accessibility and reduce expenses for child care services.

The 2025 State of the Child report from Tennessee highlights a stark reality: enrolling an infant in a daycare center costs families almost $14,000 annually. This amount surpasses the in-state tuition fees at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

“The financial burden of child care is a significant barrier for those planning to start or already raising families,” remarked Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis). “In Memphis, families are shelling out $300 weekly for a three-year-old’s care, which is unsustainable, especially when wages aren’t keeping pace.”

The newly proposed “Promising Futures Act” aims to tackle the dual challenges of rising child care costs and workforce shortages. It introduces two pilot initiatives: a workforce scholarship program to attract and retain child care professionals by subsidizing tuition for parents who enter the field, and the “Care Share Tennessee” program, which incentivizes employers to voluntarily contribute to child care support for their employees.

“This initiative is part of our broader effort to resolve both the affordability and accessibility issues in Tennessee’s child care sector,” explained Rep. Mark White (R-Memphis), the bill’s sponsor. “By adopting strategies successful in other states, we cover tuition for parents entering the child care workforce and establish Care Share Tennessee to encourage employer investments. This plan fosters a collaborative effort among businesses, employees, and the state to provide essential child care solutions within the workforce.”

Originally, Republican lawmakers proposed funding the three-year pilot through taxes on hemp and vape products. Now, legislators have shifted the funding source, using a new tax on money transfers sent out of the country to pay for the program instead.

The pilot program will launch with $5 million dedicated to child care workforce scholarships and another $5 million for the employer cost-sharing initiative.

State officials say the Tennessee Department of Human Services is expected to begin administering the program in January, though it is still unclear when families will begin seeing benefits.

Authorities Reveal Cause of Death for Teen Celeste Rivas Hernandez in Tragic Case

(KTLA) – After several months of investigation, the official cause of death for 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez has been disclosed. Her body was discovered last year in the front trunk of a Tesla registered to the singer D4vd, who now faces charges related to her death.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has concluded that Rivas Hernandez died due to “multiple penetrating injuries caused by object(s),” categorizing her death as a homicide.

Authorities reported that the teenager’s body was found on the morning of September 8, 2025, inside a vehicle registered to D4vd, parked at a Los Angeles tow yard.

An autopsy was performed two days after the discovery. Although the cause and manner of death were determined by December 2025, a court order had initially delayed the public release of this information.

Dr. Odey Ukpo, Chief Medical Examiner, expressed relief that the findings could finally be shared, stating, “After several months, I am grateful this information can now be released, not only to the public but also to the grieving family. It is unfathomable they have had to wait this long to learn what happened to their daughter. Transparency in our findings and reports is crucial for empowering the community to make informed changes, effectively reducing fear and allowing the community to take informed action.”

The release of the findings comes as a high-profile criminal case tied to the teen’s death moves forward.

D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the case.

Prosecutors allege the 21-year-old invited Rivas Hernandez to his Hollywood Hills home in April 2025, where she was last seen alive.

Her remains were later discovered in a Tesla registered to Burke after tow yard workers reported a foul odor. Burke has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court later this week.
