Smash-and-Grab Heist in Dunning: Thieves Target Elite Sports Cards and Comics for Valuable Pokémon Cards

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — In the early hours of Monday morning, a pair of thieves were caught on video forcefully breaking into a trading card and comic book store on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

Ronnie Holloway, who owns Elite Sports Cards and Comics located at 3406 North Harlem Avenue in the Dunning neighborhood, reported significant losses from the brazen smash-and-grab incident. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time one of his businesses has been targeted by criminals.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“They specifically went after high-value hobby items,” Holloway noted.

As alarms blared, the criminals made off with approximately $100,000 worth of valuable Pokémon and major league sports cards. Much of the stolen inventory had only recently been acquired, leaving Holloway visibly shaken.

“It’s a devastating hit for a small business like mine,” Holloway expressed. “This is my livelihood, my way of supporting my family. Calculating the losses, already at $100,000, it’s overwhelming. Facing this situation again, dealing with insurance, it’s another ordeal. Recovery isn’t as straightforward as it seems.”

Holloway lives 10 minutes away from his store and rushed there when his alarm company called him. It was 2:30 a.m., and he got there ahead of police.

“This is my passion, and this is what happens to businesses that are trying to have something to provide for their families,” Holloway said.

Holloway opened the store three-and-a-half years ago after enjoying success with the city’s oldest card store in the Montrose neighborhood, which he bought from its retiring owner, who had run it for 41 years. In 2022, thieves targeted that collectibles store, too.

“There has to be, when these people are caught, there has to be accountability,” Holloway said.

The growing popularity of collectable cards has turned the industry into an investment market and turned the card shop sellers and buyers into a target for criminal activity.

“Similar to kind of a stock market or anything, there’s only a certain number of these cards in the market so as more and more popularity draws to these cards,” said Running to the Rip co-owner Zach Horwitz. “It’s going to start driving the price up, basically just some supply and demand, not enough copies around, but people willing to pay more and more.”

Horwitz says as Running to the Rip’s merchandise grew in popularity and market value, and other card shop owners have upgraded security.

“We have a buzzer system similar to the way all the jewelry stores do. So, even if you did grab something and try to run out, the doors lock,” Horwitz said. “We’ve had to had more security systems and more precautions in order to make sure that items don’t leave the store. Because once they do, they’re probably gone forever.”

Holloway is convinced that his stores are being targeted, but he feels that he has taken every precaution, and the city needs to do more to protect business owners like him.

“The mayor has to do something other than say, ‘We need to give guidance to our kids,’” Holloway said. “There needs to be action taken because we cannot continue to allow this. They’re putting us out of business. We are people paying taxes like anyone else. We work hard. We’re supposed to deal with it. It’s not that simple.”

Both card shop owners say because there is no way to trace these items, it makes their shops more of a target.

Police said the burglary happened just before 2 a.m. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.

Area Five detectives are investigating.

Unveiling the Unusual: Why Michael Jackson Surrounded Himself with Mannequin ‘Friends

Michael Jackson wears a suit and tinted glasses.

Michael Jackson, despite his immense popularity and millions of devoted fans worldwide, often found himself feeling isolated. The King of Pop, known for his electrifying performances and groundbreaking music, was surprisingly shy and reserved offstage. Those close to him often noted his struggle to form genuine friendships, largely due to the overwhelming burden of his fame and the difficulty in discerning who he could truly trust.

In an intriguing glimpse into his personal life, Jackson once expressed a unique idea to combat his loneliness. While planning the interior of a new home in Beverly Hills, he envisioned creating a room filled with mannequins. To him, these inanimate figures could serve as a comforting presence, symbolizing the friends he felt he lacked in real life. This unconventional approach highlighted his deep-seated desire for companionship and the profound impact his celebrity status had on his personal relationships.

Michael Jackson had millions of adoring fans, but he admitted he didn’t have many close friends. Those who knew Jackson described him as painfully shy. He also said that because of his fame, he couldn’t tell who he could trust. Because of this, he said he wanted a room full of mannequins who would become his friends.

Michael Jackson said he wanted to make mannequins into his friends

As Jackson was decorating a new home in Beverly Hills, he said he wanted to dedicate a room to mannequins. He wanted to be able to view them as friends. He felt he had too few people he could trust.

“I guess I want to bring them to life. I like to imagine talking to them,” he told Rolling Stone in 1983. “You know what I think it is? Yeah, I think I’ll say it. I think I’m accompanying myself with friends I never had. I probably have two friends. And I just got them. Being an entertainer, you just can’t tell who is your friend. And they see you so differently. A star instead of a next-door neighbor.”

He said he wanted to have conversations with them.

“That’s what it is. I surround myself with people I want to be my friends,” he said. “And I can do that with manikins. I’ll talk to them.”

He added that he would name them, which he’d already done with statues he kept in his home. Jackson’s Neverland Ranch ultimately did have rooms full of mannequins.

Tragedy at Mexican Pyramids: Gunman Attacks Tourists, Claims Life of Canadian Visitor

0

Images and footage shared by regional news outlets capture a harrowing scene of a man wielding a firearm atop a pyramid, as onlookers scramble for safety.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — In a shocking incident at the renowned Teotihuacán pyramids, an armed individual fired upon visitors on Monday, resulting in the death of a Canadian tourist and injuring at least 13 others at the archaeological site situated north of Mexico City, according to officials.

Authorities later reported that the gunman died from a self-inflicted wound. Security personnel recovered a gun, a knife, and several rounds of ammunition at the scene.

This story continues below.

According to local authorities, seven individuals sustained gunshot wounds. Details on how the remaining victims were injured remain unclear, but those hospitalized include six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians, and another Canadian, as per local government reports.

Footage circulated by local media depicts a man brandishing a gun from the pyramid’s summit, prompting people to seek cover amidst the sound of gunfire.

The shooting took place shortly after 11:30 a.m. when dozens of tourists were at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon. A man standing on the structure’s platform began firing upward, according to a tour guide who was at the scene and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity for safety reasons.

“Some people, because they were scared … threw themselves face down on the ground, and the rest of us started to go down,” the guide said, recounting how the shooter, upon seeing the tourists descending the pyramid’s steps, began firing.

Another group of visitors lay motionless on the pyramid’s platform to avoid being targeted by the shooter.

The first to respond to the shooting were the police officers providing security within the archaeological ruins, and shortly afterward a National Guard unit arrived in a van to handle the emergency.

In past years, staff at the archaeological site carried out security scans before people entered the area but have since stopped.

The guide showed a video that he took showing a woman limping and her back covered in blood and another man’s arm being bandaged.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on social media that the shooting would be investigated and that she was in touch with the Canadian Embassy.

“What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families,” she wrote.

Anita Anand, Canada’s foreign affairs minister, said on X that as a “result of a horrific act of gun violence, a Canadian was killed and another wounded in Teotihuacán” and that her “thoughts are with their family and loved ones. ”

The Teotihuacán pyramids are a series of massive structures on the outskirts of Mexico City built by three different ancient civilizations. As one of Mexico’s most important touristic destinations, the site drew more than 1.8 million international visitors last year, according to government figures.

New Zealand’s Political Landscape Shakes: PM Luxon Triumphs in Crucial Leadership Vote Ahead of Elections

WELLINGTON – New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon confirmed on Tuesday that he successfully retained his leadership position following a vote among his party’s legislators. This decision came amid growing speculation about his future due to declining poll numbers.

The confidence vote took place during a routine assembly of the center-right National Party members, conducted behind closed doors. After the meeting, Luxon addressed the media, revealing that he had proactively initiated the vote to affirm his leadership, and was met with success.

“Over the past week, media outlets have intensely speculated about my position as leader,” Luxon remarked. He explained that by calling for a confidence vote, he aimed to dispel the ongoing rumors.

Luxon did not disclose the specifics of the vote count or confirm whether the decision was unanimous.

The National Party has been leading a right-wing coalition government in New Zealand since their victory in the 2023 elections. Luxon, who transitioned into politics after a career as a senior airline executive, has been at the helm of the party since 2021.

The vote among his lawmakers happened months before New Zealand’s next national election, scheduled for Nov. 7. Recent drops in the polls for National had prompted speculation from analysts that he would face a leadership challenge.

After an unusually long meeting of his caucus at Parliament in Wellington, which lasted two and a half hours, instead of the usual hour, Luxon read from a brief statement about the vote. He departed without taking questions from reporters.

While two recent New Zealand prime ministers — National’s John Key and Labour’s Jacinda Ardern — have voluntarily quit the post, it would have been extremely unusual for lawmakers to oust a sitting prime minister.

Luxon blamed reports of unrest within his part’s ranks on news outlets, but one political poll released days ago appeared to have made a discussion of leadership unavoidable. The 1News-Verian poll suggested slumping support for Luxon and for National in a hypothetical election.

The levels of support in the most recent poll implied the right-wing bloc led by his party could come in behind the left-wing bloc led by Labour if an election were held immediately, though the vote won’t occur for more than another six months.

“If the media want to keep focusing on speculation and rumor, I am not going to engage,” Luxon said Tuesday.

Scott Patterson’s Departure from ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’: How the Show Addressed Sully’s Exit

The much-loved series Sullivan’s Crossing has returned with its eagerly awaited Season 4 on The CW. However, those who have followed the beloved small-town drama, inspired by Robyn Carr’s bestselling novels, will notice significant changes in the cast lineup this season.

For viewers needing a recap, Season 3 of Sullivan’s Crossing concluded with an intense cliffhanger. A character named Liam, portrayed by Marcus Rosner, appeared at the Crossing, claiming to be the husband of Maggie, played by Morgan Kohan. Simultaneously, Maggie’s father, Sully, played by Scott Patterson, was getting ready to leave the town. As the new season unfolds, audiences will become more familiar with Liam’s character, but they might be caught off guard by the news of Patterson’s actual departure from the show during the hiatus.

The premiere of Season 4 frequently references Sully’s exit from the Crossing. The Season 3 finale provided clarity on how the series planned to address his absence. If you’re curious about how Sully was written out of the storyline or seeking insights into Scott Patterson’s real-life exit from the show, we have the details you need.

Questions abound regarding Scott Patterson’s departure from Sullivan’s Crossing. How did the series handle Sully’s character exit in the Season 3 finale? What have Patterson, his fellow cast members, and the show’s creator said about his leaving? Is there a possibility of Patterson, or his character Sully, making a comeback in future episodes? Here’s what you need to know about Patterson’s exit and Sully’s absence in the current season.

Why Did Scott Patterson Leave Sullivan’s Crossing?

Scott Patterson, who played the integral role of Sully Sullivan since the inception of Sullivan’s Crossing in Season 1, left fans in disbelief with the casting changes. So, why did he decide to leave? Before hearing from his co-stars and the series’ creator, Patterson himself addressed his departure on Instagram on March 5, citing “creative differences” as the primary reason for his decision to step away from the show.

“Every actor knows what it’s like to fall in love with a character and a story. I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him. The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue,” Patterson wrote alongside a photo of him as Sully. As the actor continued to address his departure, he called out unnamed folks associated with the series and disputed implications that the show chose to move on without him.

“It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise,” Patterson wrote. “I was not intending to make any statement but the fans of the books and the show deserve to know the truth as I have always been respectful of those who support this industry by watching and loving these characters we are so dang lucky and blessed to portray and bring to life. I really enjoyed Sully and fought for his voice and his character. The richness and depth of Sully, whom the fans of the books all know and love, is so multi-layered and interesting. The fans deserved better than to think the embodiment of this character, me, would just disrespect not only the show, but them. In the end, we’re all fans of these characters and stories, and I’ll always support and defend the truth.”

On March 5, Deadline also cited sources that claimed, “Patterson, concerned with the direction of his character, asked to be released from his contract after Season 3, a wish that was granted.”

The day prior to Patterson’s post, Sullivan’s Crossing executive producer/showrunner Roma Roth issued a statement to Us Weekly, which said, “Season 3 of Sullivan’s Crossing ended with Sully leaving for Ireland, beginning a new chapter in his life. Season 4 picks up the next day, with Sully still overseas. While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world…”

On March 22, Sullivan’s Crossing stars Kohan and Chad Michael Murry spoke on Patterson’s departure in an interview with Yahoo Canada and echoed Roth’s statement.

“[Maggie’s whole world at the beginning of the season is not what she anticipated. She’s just kind of settled in with Cal… and then it’s really thrust on her that now, you’re taking over the Crossing, and you are fully involved, while the rest of your life is kind of thrown up in the air again. … And part of her support system is now gone too,” Kohan said. “The show stays totally true to itself, and Sully is still a big part of it. … He still exists in this world, and there’s still that relationship. And he built the Crossing, so it’s always going to be there, and that’s kind of the foundation that the show is built on,” Murray added.

Why Did Sully Leave Sullivan’s Crossing? How Sullivan’s Crossing Wrote Sully Off The Show:

So how did Sullivan’s Crossing explain Sully’s departure in the show? Season 3 saw Sully finding unexpected romance with Helen Culver (Kate Vernon), and in the finale, he made a major decision to take a leap of faith, leave the Crossing, and travel to Ireland with her.

“It’s time for me to finally let myself go in a new direction,” Sully told Maggie. When she asked, “What about the Crossing?” he assured her, “I love the Crossing, Maggie. Going to Ireland with Helen isn’t gonna change that.” So as Roth noted, when Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 picks up a day after Season 3’s finale, Sully will already have left the Crossing and begun his new chapter off-screen.

Is Sully Gone For Good? Is Scott Patterson Returning To Sullivan’s Crossing One Day?

As is typically the case with any character departure that doesn’t end in death, Sullivan’s Crossing fans will likely be wondering if Sully and Patterson are gone for good or they could return to the Crossing in the future.

Based on the tone of Patterson’s Instagram post, it sounds like he may have closed the door on the show for good. But he did express serious love for the character and show, and in Roth’s statement to Us Weekly, she noted “…potential [for Sully] to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative.” A day after Roth’s statement, however, Deadline reported, “I hear Patterson was approached by Roth about a possible Season 5 return, should the show get renewed. A formal offer never came, with Roth instead blindsiding the actor by issuing the statement yesterday.” So we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds.

Perhaps there’s still hope for Patterson’s return down the line, so never say never! But manage your Sully Season 4 expectations accordingly, and instead of Patterson, prepare to see Maggie and Cal dealing with Liam’s arrival and managing the Crossing in Sully’s absence with Edna (Andrea Menard), Frank (Tom Jackson), Lola (Amalia Williamson), Sydney (Lindura), Rob (Reid Price), and more returning characters.

New episodes of Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 premiere Mondays on The CW.

Mountain Lion Attacks: California Family Mourns Loss of Beloved Dogs in Daylight Incident

A family in Southern California is grappling with the heart-wrenching loss of their two beloved dogs, tragically killed in a mountain lion attack at their Yucaipa home early Saturday morning.

Laurie Schultz, who resides on Limekiln Drive, recounted the shocking incident to KTLA, revealing that the mountain lion leaped over their backyard fence between 7:50 and 8:20 a.m. The predator then attacked the family’s cherished pets—a 90-pound husky and a 65-pound Anatolian shepherd—in the clear light of day. The brazen attack was captured by the family’s security cameras, painting a vivid picture of the tragedy.

In a social media post filled with grief, Schultz expressed the heartbreak her family is enduring. “Sad day for the Schultz household,” she wrote. The mountain lion, she noted, not only attacked but returned to carry away the Anatolian shepherd, underscoring the unprovoked nature of the assault and how the dogs appeared to be deliberately targeted.

In response to the incident, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is actively engaged with the Schultz family. The organization’s biologists are slated to conduct discussions with the family on Monday to delve into the details of the attack.

The CDFW emphasized the unfortunate reality that mountain lion attacks on domestic dogs, including larger breeds, are not rare occurrences. They advise residents to adopt preventative strategies to shield their pets and livestock from such predators. Key recommendations include supervising pets when they are outdoors—particularly during nighttime hours—and ensuring that any animals kept outside have secure enclosures to deter potential threats.

The CDFW offers mountain lion safety tips for residents and their pets through the Human-Wildlife Conflicts Toolkit found on its website.

“We know you have all seen the warnings about keeping your pets inside, but please reach out to people who walk our streets and warn them,” Schultz said, warning other Yucaipa residents about the attack. “Everyone else also be alert and aware.”

Tim Cook Resigns as Apple CEO: John Ternus Takes the Helm to Lead Tech Giant into New Era

0

In brief

  • Tim Cook will step down as CEO in September, marking the end of a 15-year term.
  • His replacement will be Apple hardware chief John Ternus, who has a reputation for sharp product ideas and design.

Apple has announced that John Ternus, a seasoned executive within the company, will take over as its new CEO. Ternus, who has been instrumental in the development of Apple’s hardware division, is set to lead the tech giant into a new era marked by advancements in artificial intelligence, succeeding Tim Cook in this pivotal role.

Since joining Apple in 2001, Ternus has made significant contributions to the company, particularly in reviving the popularity of Apple’s Mac computers. Under his leadership, these products have seen a notable increase in market share, becoming a crucial part of Apple’s diverse product lineup.

The appointment of Ternus signals a strategic shift for Apple from focusing on supply chain expertise, which was a hallmark of Cook’s leadership, to emphasizing design and product innovation. Ternus’s background aligns with this new focus, reflecting a commitment to advancing Apple’s legacy of cutting-edge technology and aesthetics.

At 50, Ternus mirrors the age Tim Cook was when he first took the helm from Apple’s iconic co-founder, Steve Jobs. This transition has been anticipated, with Ternus often regarded as Cook’s natural successor, set to continue steering the company forward.

Despite maintaining a relatively low profile, Ternus has been a driving force behind the creation of popular Apple products such as the iPad and AirPods, which are now staples in the tech world. His influence has been quietly transformative, shaping the way consumers interact with technology today.

He has also helped sharpen the distinctions among Apple’s product lines by introducing “Pro” models of Macs and iPhones that pushed their technological capabilities and prices to new heights, while also introducing offerings such as the MacBook Neo and iPhone “e” models at some of Apple’s lowest-ever prices.

He most recently showed the company’s iPhone Air last autumn, the biggest revamp of the iPhone since 2017 and a key proving ground for several new chips.

Ternus faces several challenges

Ternus will be tasked with helping Apple navigate a technology landscape upended by AI, after losing its crown as the world’s most valuable company to Nvidia.

Nvidia has announced its own personal computer and is working on chips that can power laptops.

Ternus will also have to fend off rivals such as Meta, whose augmented-reality glasses have become a surprise hit with just a fraction of the capabilities — and price tag — of Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

“The promotion of Mr Ternus indicates the company will focus on new hardware devices such as folding phones, glasses, VR devices and AI pins,” said Gil Luria, managing director of financial services company DA Davidson & Co.

Perhaps the biggest challenge Ternus will face is how to integrate AI into the iPhone — the most successful consumer product in history — and the rest of Apple’s lineup.

Earlier this year, Apple struck a deal with its longtime rival in smartphones, Alphabet’s Google, to use Google’s Gemini to try to improve its Siri virtual assistant.

Despite introducing a form of artificial intelligence to the public imagination in 2011 with Siri, Apple hasn’t yet scored a hardware or software product hit centred on new AI technologies, while emerging rivals such as OpenAI have attracted hundreds of millions of users.

“I expect his biggest challenge and efforts will be focused on getting a better AI story and offering together that relies more on Apple’s own capabilities and less on third parties,” Bob O’Donnell, head of tech consulting firm TECHAnalysis Research, said.

Cook will become the company’s executive chairman on 1 September, Apple said in a statement.

Apple stock has soared twentyfold since Cook took over as CEO in August 2011.

Cook, who presented a custom golden plaque to United States President Donald Trump will also continue to engage with policymakers, the company said.

Ben Bajarin, CEO of technology consulting firm Creative Strategies, said Ternus is well-liked within Apple “and will bring fresh energy”.

Separately, Apple said that Johny Srouji, who has overseen Apple’s custom chip and sensor designs, has been named chief hardware officer.

Review of ‘Schmigadoon!’: A Familiar Take on Broadway’s Golden Era

Theater review

SCHMIGADOON!

Running for two hours and 30 minutes, including a single intermission, this performance is held at the Nederlander Theatre, located at 208 West 41st Street.

Two hours and 30 minutes, with one intermission. At the Nederlander Theatre, 208 West 41st Street

In the early aughts, it was all the rage on Broadway for musicals to send up other musicals.

First there was “Urinetown” and “The Drowsy Chaperone,” two nerdy parodies that were very funny and had teeth. In 2005, “Monty Python’s Spamalot” had David Hyde Pierce sing “You won’t succeed on Broadway if you don’t have any Jews!” And much later in 2015 the Renaissance-set “Something Rotten” put a Shakespearean spin on the sub-genre. After that, the musicals-about-musicals moment felt finally kaput.

Well, wait a Schmig. The formerly dormant trend is active once again with “Schmigadoon!,” the blinding new show at the Nederlander Theatre based on the cancelled Apple TV comedy series about a New York couple whose relationship is put to the test when they become trapped inside a musical.

Can’t say I missed it. Been there, ‘doon that.

“Schmigadoon!” is pleasant — incessantly so — with a cast full of skilled comics like Ana Gasteyer, Ann Harada and Maulik Pancholy from “30 Rock.” Familiar theater faces Max Clayton and Isabelle McCalla are wonderful, too.

Old-fangled to a fault, the show will hold some appeal for the traditional set who bristle at this season’s revivals only winding the clock back as far as 1975.

But the musical with a book, music and lyrics by Cinco Paul is confused as to what it’s supposed to be.

If it’s an ode to Golden Age classics, why does it make them seem so cloying and stupid? If it’s a cutting parody of the likes of “Brigadoon,” “Oklahoma!,” “The Music Man,” “Guys and Dolls” and “The Sound of Music,” why is the tone Hallmark schmaltzy and the jokes surface-skimming, basic and unclever? Maybe on TV, mocking musicals for merely containing singing and dancing is enough to get laughs. On 41st Street, you’ve got to do a lot better than that.

Yet that’s Paul’s go-to gag: “Here they go again!” He has one of the displaced main characters, Josh (Alex Brightman), whine every time he hears the pit orchestra strike up.

“Oh no! It’s a song. You just started another song!,” Josh moans before the annoying company number “Corn Puddin’.”

Listening to one of a huge catalogue of unmemorable-but-insistent tunes that have been crammed in — an entire television season’s worth of “Shipoopi”s — I was inclined to agree with him.

Judgy Josh winds up far, far away from the five boroughs with girlfriend Melissa (Sara Chase) when they walk across a mysterious bridge in a Catskills forest that leads them to Schmigadoon, a little Land of Oz where the aesthetic is 1890s Easter egg and the lingua franca is watered-down Rodgers and Hammerstein ripoffs.

Long together but unmarried, the couple is already on the rocks. The twee town of Schmigadoon only piles on the tension. Melissa is a Broadway buff, so she’s in heaven. Josh, however, is in a 5-6-7-8th circle of hell. He likes the Yankees — not “Damn Yankees.”

The alarmed pair, unable to leave, learn from a mysterious leprechaun that the only way out is if they find true love, a k a learn an important lesson. It’s as if “Groundhog Day” was made into a musical. Oh, wait…

Chase and Brightman are dry and sarcastic, if with rather safely written parts, and make personable guides through this Pleasantville of amped-up loons.

Funniest is “SNL” alum Gasteyer as a stern and ambitious reverend’s wife named Mildred who gets the best number: “Tribulation,” a winning spoof of “Trouble” from “The Music Man.” And I wish Afra Hines hadn’t arrived so late in Act 2 — she’s a snooty delight as Countess Gabrielle Von Blerkom, a send-up of “Sound of Music”’s frigid Baroness.

Clayton, a terrific dancer, turns Billy Bigelow from “Carousel” into dumb-hunk Danny, a carnival barker and innuendo machine who hits on Melissa.

It’s too bad that Harada, a phenomenally funny actress who reprises her role from the TV series, wasn’t given more to do as the mayor’s airheaded spouse. And McKenzie Kurtz is over-caffeinated playing Betsy, an Ado Annie type who comes off too modern for this milieu — more “Shucked” than “Schmig.”

There’s a lot of hyperactivity here, not least from director and choreographer Christopher Gattelli, who throws in fast, aerobic dancing wherever he sees the smallest gap. Why such an abundance? You feel exhausted for the ensemble. And I guarantee you there is not a single Golden Age musical with this many dance numbers. Gattelli’s best contribution, and most in the spirit of whatever this is, is a dream ballet in Act 2.

As the second half leaps to a close, “Schmigadoon!” shifts from a cotton candy freight train to a sentimentality dump truck. But the touching McCalla, as Marion-the-librarian-inspired Emma, makes the change-up work by giving one of the few performances with some intellect and nuance behind it. Playing Emma’s shy younger brother Carson at select performances, little comedian Ayaan Diop steals the show.

In the end, it turns out it’s the naive townsfolk who have learned a thing or two from Melissa and Josh — what a shock — and they unleash a bunch of facade-busting secrets. A couple guys come out of the closet for some cheap crowd cheers and one woman owns up to being socialist.

Melissa and Josh are ready to leave Schmigadoon. And so are we. I walked away contemplating if somewhere buried in there is a smart, hilarious musical that questions, and not so sappily, the point of old musicals today.

But what’s the use of wond’rin?

Local Politician Allegedly Threatens Rafters and Stabs Teenager, Lawsuit Claims

0

Left inset: Darrell Lindstrom (County of Boise). Right inset: A photo that allegedly shows Idaho elected official Darrell Lindstrom on a “jet ski” on the day of a stabbing attack he is accused of carrying out on a teenage rafter, according to a lawsuit filed by the teen’s family (Pickens Law P.A.). Background: The Idaho river where the stabbing attack that Darrell Lindstrom is accused of carrying out allegedly happened (KIVI).

In a shocking incident on the Main Payette River, a group of Idaho men riding what were described as “jet skis” allegedly assaulted a family of rafters. The confrontation, which reportedly involved an elected official, escalated to the point where a river safety knife was held to a mother’s throat, accompanied by a chilling threat: “I will f—ing kill you b—.” The situation intensified when the official allegedly stabbed the woman’s teenage daughter after she attempted to intervene, as detailed in a lawsuit filed against them.

The lawsuit names Boise County Commissioner Darrell “Lindy” Lindstrom as a key figure in the alleged attack. Abby Beard, the plaintiff, claims that she was enjoying a rafting trip with her son and another family member in August 2025 when Lindstrom and his associates approached them near a popular beach recreation area north of Horseshoe Bend.

Despite Lindstrom’s assertion of innocence conveyed to Law&Crime, the accusations paint a grim picture. Beard’s 17-year-old daughter is said to have sustained a “large slash mark” near her knee, penetrating deep into the muscle, following the alleged stabbing incident. Her efforts to disarm Lindstrom reportedly resulted in a hand injury, as noted in the legal documentation.

The complaint further describes the circumstances leading to the violent encounter. It states that the minor, referred to as T.B., gestured at the men due to their reckless and dangerous behavior, which was particularly concerning given the presence of children. T.B., being notably smaller in stature compared to the group of men, was significantly distressed by their actions.

“T.B., the minor, directed gestures at the group of men because they were being reckless, dangerous, and the presence of children was distressing to T.B,” according to the complaint. “T.B. was a minor at the time, and very small in size compared to the group of men.”

The Beards say they got off the river around 6:55 p.m. that evening and were confronted “aggressively” by Lindstrom’s son-in-law, Lloyd Asher, and a “group of men” he was with. The group allegedly asked the family “who wanted to fight,” then pushed Beard to the ground and her daughter into the water and told her, “How do you like that b—.”

The third Beard family member, Treyson Beard, was filming the altercation and caught an unidentified male on video “yelling and threatening” the Beards, as well as another person who was on the beach and stepped in to try and help the family, according to the complaint.

Asher and the unidentified male told the Beards “that they were going to kill them,” per the complaint. Lindstrom was allegedly not with them at the time of this altercation.

“In fear of her life and to protect her children, Abby went to her raft and retrieved her river safety knife, inside its sheath,” the complaint explains. “Abby then demanded that the unidentified adult male and Asher leave the area, ordering them [to] leave her children alone.”

Asher and the man he was with left the beach and went to a “property along the river very close nearby,” according to the complaint. They allegedly had two children with them at the time.

About five minutes later, Asher returned with Lindstrom and three other adult males, including a defendant identified as Bo Fisher, to the beach “seeking a confrontation” and asking who was “gonna get it,” the complaint says.

“I will f—ing kill you,” Asher and Fisher allegedly told the Beards.

“Abby, scared for her life and her children’s lives, removed the knife from its sheath and brandished the knife in the hope to scare off the aggressive and confrontational men,” the complaint alleges. “Lindstrom grabbed Abby and forced her to the ground and attempted to wrestle the knife away from her, by then the knife was back in the sheath.”

Abby Beard claims Lindstrom grabbed the knife and then “held it to her throat stating, ‘I will f—ing kill you b—,’” according to the complaint. “T.B. tried to intervene with the attack on Abby, trying to take the knife from defendant Lindstrom. Defendant Lindstrom stabbed T.B. in the leg and threw the knife in the river.”

A brawl allegedly broke out on the beach, with Fisher attacking Treyson Beard and “punching him in the back of the head” and “beating him,” the complaint says. The Beards allege that the “attack on Treyson resulted in severe facial and dental injuries that required medical and dental attention,” per the complaint.

Lindstrom, who is an elected county official, is accused of also attacking Abby Beard, leaving her with a “small puncture wound in her left arm and a small puncture in her right leg,” the complaint says.

“Lindstrom eventually got off Abby and as she stood up, she saw Treyson was extremely bloody,” the document alleges. “Abby immediately learned that T.B. had been stabbed by a knife.”

The Beards say police reports were filed but they faced “delays and stalls from Boise County authorities.” The Boise County Sheriff’s Office says there is an active investigation into the incident.

“It is unfortunate that an elected official felt so comfortable engaging in the conduct as alleged (and will be proven) in the complaint,” the Beards’ attorney, Terri Pickens, told Law&Crime in a statement. “Because of unexplained delays by law enforcement, my clients had no choice but to initiate a civil action for recovery of damages that resulted from the attacks on them. We are encouraged that the justice system will work and my clients will prevail, albeit with both physical and emotional scars.”

Lindstrom tells Law&Crime that while, at the request of his lawyer, there’s “nothing” he can say about the accusations he is facing specifically, he insists they are untrue.

“The allegations are completely insane,” Lindstrom insists. “All I can say is I’m innocent.”

Asher did not comment on the case, and Fisher could not be reached for comment.
