Police Investigate Mysterious Prosthetic Leg Found at Popular Fishing Destination

0

A prosthetic limb discovered on a beach along the Mid North Coast of New South Wales remains without an owner, prompting police efforts to locate the individual to whom it belongs.

Jess White and her fiancé, Chris, stumbled upon the artificial leg during a fishing trip near Scotts Head on Sunday afternoon.

They encountered the prosthetic about four kilometers from the 4WD access point, where the retreating tide had exposed it.

“It had some barnacles clinging to it, but we’re not experts, so we can’t say how long it was in the water,” White remarked.

After making the discovery, White promptly reached out to the authorities and followed their recommendation to turn it over to them.

Unveiling Urgent Insights: Antisemitism Interim Report Sparks Critical Recommendations

0

In Brief

  • The interim report from the antisemitism royal commission is due by 30 April.
  • The commission has told SBS News it could identify issues that need immediate action.

The eagerly awaited interim report from the Royal Commission on Antisemitism is poised to potentially suggest measures requiring “urgent or immediate action.” However, it is important to note that this report will not draw on data from private hearings.

Instead, the commission’s findings, set for submission to Governor-General Sam Mostyn on April 30, will rely on data gathered from official requests for information, public submissions, and meetings.

This marks the first report by the commission since its establishment earlier this year. It is anticipated to concentrate on the role of security agencies and any intelligence shortcomings that might have contributed to the tragic events of December 14, when 15 people, predominantly Jewish Australians, lost their lives during a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

The inaugural series of public hearings is scheduled to take place in Sydney from May 4 to May 15. These sessions will delve into defining antisemitism, understanding the personal impacts and experiences of antisemitism on Jewish Australians, and evaluating how prevalent antisemitism is within institutions and the broader society.

In a statement provided to SBS News ahead of the report’s release, the royal commission clarified that no private hearings have been conducted thus far. The initial report will be compiled using a diverse range of sources, including official document requests, public submissions, and various meetings.

The Commission said a “significant number” of submissions it had received detailed lived experiences of antisemitism across a number of sectors, including education, employment, media, health, the arts, sports, and online.

It said the report would “identify other issues requiring urgent or immediate action. The Commissioner will make recommendations relevant to these issues”.

Ronald Sackville, the former chair of the disability royal commission, said the interim report is likely to be confined to examining the actions of the intelligence agencies and police forces, based on the comments of the royal commissioner Virginia Bell.

He said a full examination and a full set of recommendations may have to wait until the final report.

“It may be that the interim report doesn’t provide a complete and full analysis of all the issues arising out of the law enforcement and intelligence issues that the commission is going to investigate, but we’ll just have to wait and see whether it does that.”

Scott Prasser, a public policy researcher and expert on royal commissions, said interim reports are usually done halfway through a royal commission.

“To me, they should have been talking to some people, preferably in public hearings, before we have any sort of interim report,” he told SBS News.

He said questions that could be asked to establish facts included: “how quickly did the police respond, what happened, who was what where and so on”.

“So I’m not quite sure whether this, it’s to me, it’s rushing the process.”

Prasser said facts could be established without affecting the separate criminal trial for alleged shooter Naveed Akram, who is facing 59 charges, including murder and terrorism offences.

“It could establish all sorts of things like: ‘Who were affected?’, ‘What were people doing?’ How much police surveillance was there?’

“Were the New South Wales Police alerted to it? How long did it take for the authorities to respond to all those sort of things, which have got nothing to do with who was shooting.”

Prasser said the public hearings would be an important mechanism for Jewish Australians to express their feelings and experiences of antisemitism.

“The hearings are often where the Royal Commission gets a clear idea of what happened and who did what.”

The Commission has also not ruled out further interim reports, saying others could be prepared if they are “considered necessary”.

Earlier this year, former ASIO chief Dennis Richardson resigned from his position as special adviser to the antisemitism royal commission, saying he felt he was “surplus” to the needs of the inquiry.

He said the interim report that will now be done by the royal commission will be “a very different document” to the one that he would have done in his review, before the royal commission was announced.

The Albanese government initially refused to call a royal commission into the Bondi massacre, instead tapping Richardson to head a review of the adequacy of intelligence and law enforcement agencies before the attack.

Following weeks of political pressure, Albanese relented and announced a broader inquiry to be headed by Bell, a former High Court judge, to investigate antisemitism and any failures in the nation’s intelligence services.

Richardson’s review was folded into the new royal commission.

Tragic Case Unfolds: Juvenile Faces Murder Charges in Shocking 10-Year-Old Girl’s Death

In Alabama, a tragic incident unfolded as a 10-year-old girl, initially reported missing, was discovered deceased in her home last week. The heartbreaking event involved another child as the alleged perpetrator.

Authorities have taken a “juvenile” into custody, charging them with one count of murder in the case concerning Katheryn Bigbee, as announced by law enforcement officials.

The Piedmont Police Department released a statement detailing their swift response to a report of a missing child at 10:51 p.m. on Friday. Upon reaching the location, first responders found the young girl lifeless inside the residence.

The victim was later officially identified as Katheryn Bigbee by the Calhoun County Coroner’s Office.

A second youth, whose identity remains confidential, has been detained and charged with murder. Due to the sensitive nature of the case involving minors, officials have withheld further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

“This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved and for our entire community,” Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson said in a statement. “We ask that you keep the family affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

Johnson’s heartbreak was echoed by administrators at Piedmont Elementary School, which mourned “the loss of one of our precious students” in a Facebook post.

“Our entire Piedmont Elementary School family is grieving as we remember a sweet little girl who brought smiles, kindness, and a bright light to our halls each day,” the post states. “Katheryn had a joyful, spunky personality that made her truly special. She was an enthusiastic reader and will be remembered for the happiness she shared so freely. She will always be a part of our school family, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her classmates, teachers, and all who knew and loved her.”

Blake Trammel, a relative of the victim, said the family had been “torn to pieces” in the wake of Katheryn’s death, according to a report from the New York Post.

“She was a light in any room she walked into. I cannot express the pain, guilt, and emptiness that has come from all of this. We don’t have answers, only more questions,” he reportedly wrote.

Tragic Triple Homicide: Police Seek Suspects in Shocking Murder of Pregnant Teen, Mother, and Child

0

A tragic event unfolded in Alabama as a woman, along with her pregnant teenage daughter and young son, were discovered murdered in their residence, according to local authorities.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch reported that deputies arrived at a home in Wilmer shortly after 2:30 a.m., where they found the victims in separate rooms, each with their hands bound behind their backs.

The deceased were identified as 46-year-old Lisa Gail Fields, who suffered fatal stab wounds; 17-year-old Keziah Arionna Luker, who was shot; and 12-year-old Thomas Cordelle Jr., whose throat was slashed, nearly resulting in decapitation.

“It was an incredibly gruesome scene,” Burch stated. “Even if there’s a dispute with an adult, there’s no justification for taking lives, especially when it involves such horrific acts against two children. We are hopeful and confident that we will soon apprehend those responsible.”

Lisa Fields, 46, and her two children, 12-year-old Thomas Cordelle and 17-year-old Keziah Luker, were found murdered.

Authorities have confirmed the identities of the victims as Lisa Fields and her children, Thomas and Keziah, who were found in their Alabama home, as stated on Monday.

An 18-month-old child belonging to Luker, was found unharmed in the home.

“At this point, we don’t suspect any kind of domestic or family-type situation,” Burch told reporters.

Burch noted that the home was “left in disarray,” suggesting the perpetrators may have been searching for something. Investigators believe more than one person was involved in the killings because the victims had been subdued.

Luker was seven or eight months pregnant, the sheriff added.

“The mother was stabbed, the 17-year-old was shot, and the 12-year-old’s throat was cut as was the mom,” Burch said. “It tells me that they had a plan coming in to bring zip ties or flex cuffs with them so they had a plan.”

The father-to-be, who works offshore, triggered the discovery after he grew concerned when he could not reach Luker after he saw her cell phone activated on Life 360, the sheriff said. Another family member went to check on her and found all three victims in separate rooms with their hands bound behind them.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office determine whether the death of Luker’s unborn child warrants an additional murder charge once a suspect is arrested.

Burch said investigators currently have “positive leads” in the case.

Luker’s father told WALA-TV that his daughter had just received her GED.

“It’s a senseless murder,” he said. “She was a bubble of sunshine. A person that makes you smile; a person that’ll make you laugh whenever you’re down. She had empathy for everybody. She loved her brothers; she loved her mom she loved all of us.”

FBI Director Files $348M Lawsuit Against Magazine Over Alleged Drunkenness Accusations

0
FBI Director Kash Patel is suing magazine The Atlantic for $US250 million (A$348 million) over reports of his alleged drunkenness.

Last week’s article highlighted concerns about Patel’s alleged excessive alcohol use affecting his professional performance.

In response, Patel has initiated legal action today against the magazine and journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick, branding the piece as a “sweeping, malicious, and defamatory hit piece.”

The lawsuit claims that “Fitzpatrick could not procure a single individual to publicly support these shocking claims, instead basing her report entirely on unnamed sources who were not only highly biased with personal agendas but also lacked firsthand knowledge of the situation.”

The complaint further asserts that “the defendants published the article with actual malice, despite being explicitly cautioned, just hours before its release, that the primary allegations were categorically untrue.”

The Atlantic reported that unnamed officials in the Trump administration were concerned alcohol was behind Patel sharing false information about investigations, including the alleged murder of Charlie Kirk.

Additionally, Patel falsely asserted shortly after Kirk’s death that the suspect was already in custody.

He had also announced a “person of interest” was in custody after a shooting at Brown University. That person was quickly released when it was determined they were innocent.

The Atlantic also reported Patel’s security detail had difficulty waking him “because he was seemingly intoxicated” on multiple occasions.

When he was asked for comment by The Atlantic, he responded: “Print it, all false, I’ll see you in court—bring your chequebook”.

His lawsuit also detailed “historic law enforcement achievements” of the FBI during his tenure as director.

The footage also shows him spraying the beer around the room as he celebrated with the team.

Questions were asked about why Patel was at the Olympics on what was officially a work trip.

The president has been prolific in suing major media outlets in his second term for publishing unflattering articles about him.

The lawsuit was dismissed last week.

The letter was framed by a sketch of what appeared to be a naked woman with Trump’s signature in place of pubic hair.

The letter was written in the form of a dialogue between “Donald” and “Jeffrey”.

“Enigmas never age, have you noticed that?” Donald says in the script.

“A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.”

The birthday book had been compiled by Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, and featured contributions from other powerful friends of the paedophile.

Trump had denied to the Wall Street Journal that he had written the letter, and insisted that it never existed.

Lawsuits against ABC News and the CBS show 60 Minutes were both settled out of court.

Two Southwest Airlines Planes Avert Midair Collision at Nashville Airport Due to Air Traffic Control Error

0

In a recent close call, two Southwest Airlines planes narrowly avoided a midair collision due to an air traffic control misstep at a Tennessee airport, federal officials have reported.

The incident occurred on a Saturday evening around 5:30 p.m. when Southwest Airlines Flight 507 was executing a go-around maneuver at Nashville International Airport. During this maneuver, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted that the flight was directed into the trajectory of another aircraft that was taking off from an adjacent runway.

According to the FAA, both pilots promptly responded to onboard warning systems that alerted them to the impending danger. In response, one aircraft ascended while the other descended, successfully averting a collision. This quick thinking was corroborated by audio recordings available on www.LiveATC.net.

Two Southwest Airlines planes had to take evasive action to avoid a midair collision at Nashville International Airport on Saturday. AP

Data from Flightradar24 suggested that the two planes may have come within 500 feet of each other, a proximity that meets the criteria for a near midair collision. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and precise communication in air traffic management to ensure passenger safety.

Location data from Flightradar24 showed the planes may have flown as close as 500 feet apart at one point. If confirmed, the distance would qualify as the official definition of a near midair collision.

Flight 507 landed safely after the scare, while the other Southwest Airlines flight, 1152, continued its trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, WWLTV reported.

A Southwest Airlines spokesperson said gusty winds forced the first pilot to do the initial go-around.

“Southwest appreciates the professionalism of its pilots and flight crews in responding to the event. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees,” the airline said in a statement.

The FAA will investigate the incident.

The close call comes after an Air Canada plane crashed into a rescue truck at LaGuardia Airport last month, killing both pilots, when an air traffic controller gave both the go-ahead for the same runway.

“Stop, stop, stop, stop,” a controller demanded, according to heart-stopping audio from the tower. “Truck 1, stop, stop, stop. Stop, Truck 1. Stop.”

A controller can be heard later in the audio admitting, “I messed up.”

Deborah Witzburg Reflects on Tenure as Chicago Inspector General Ahead of Final Day Under Mayor Brandon Johnson

0

CHICAGO — After serving as the city’s chief ethics officer for four years, Deborah Witzburg is set to resign from her role at the Office of the Inspector General by the end of the week.

In an exclusive interview with the I-Team, Witzburg reflected on her challenging tenure. She emphasized that despite the difficulties, the mission of promoting transparency and accountability in government remains crucial.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Witzburg’s relationship with city officials has often been contentious, particularly following an audit that revealed the acceptance of extravagant gifts by city personnel.

In response to the audit, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson remarked in January 2025, “The way this report was portrayed is misleading.”

Witzburg explained that the public’s interest in the story was less about the cufflinks and engraved pens themselves and more about the obstruction faced by Office of the Inspector General investigators, who were unlawfully barred from entering a room at City Hall.

The outgoing OIG recounted that splashy investigation into Johnson’s receipt of gifts after a scathing report from her office on lavish, undocumented items given to the mayor.

“We found out later that that room, the actual room, which was displayed to the public, wasn’t even built until after we tried to inspect it,” Witzburg said.

During her tenure, she criticized the mayor for not firing an aide accused of extorting an alderperson for a vote. She also tore into the law department for refusing to provide records they were legally required to, excoriated the Chicago Police Department for spotty record keeping on discipline levied against officers, and the list goes on. It all circles around a singular point Witzburg underscored, which is, “What is allowed to go on in city government when no one is watching?”

She said she had good working relationships with other city departments and individuals, and despite a series of rebukes of how city hall conducts public business, Witzburg told the I-Team she was not forced out and only reached out directly to Johnson on three occasions in the last four years. She said she never got a response.

“He and I have not had a lot of direct, personal, individual interactions. I haven’t heard back from him. The decision not to seek reappointment to a second term was mine and mine alone,” she insisted.

After Witzburg said her office faced major roadblocks from the city she worked to change the law, and working with Ald. Matt Martin, the chair of the Ethics Committee, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance to give the OIG more power to conduct interviews with city employees without city attorneys present and collect relevant records to substantiate claims.

“When you have an inspector general’s office investigating alleged misconduct, especially involving elected officials or senior members of our team, they need to have access to as much information as it exists to get to the bottom of things,” he stated.

READ MORE | Chicago police not consistent about stripping powers from officers under investigation: OIG report

Witzburg also criticized former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who appointed her, finding in 2023 Lightfoot violated the city’s ethics laws by sending campaign emails to city employees asking for contributions. The Chicago Board of Ethics later dismissed those findings.

“If a mayor felt entirely warm and fuzzy about their about their inspector general, then we probably wouldn’t be doing our job,” said Witzburg, who would only reveal this about her future: “It has always been my intention to spend a career in public service. That continues to be, that continues to be my plan.”

The OIG is poised to release another report Tuesday as Witzburg said she is running through the finish line.

The mayor’s office told the I-Team Johnson is committed to good governance and public transparency, but said the administration is concerned Witzburg politicized the office and compromised its credibility.

“Mayor Johnson is committed to good governance and public transparency. At the same time, the administration has been concerned by the current Inspector General’s record of politicizing the office’s authority in a manner that has compromised the credibility and independence of the OIG, which must remain grounded in facts, fairness, and the public trust. We look forward to working in good faith with whomever is selected as the next Inspector General while ensuring governance is carried out faithfully and in the interest of Chicagoans,” the mayor’s office said.

Martin said the search for Witzburg’s replacement is already underway and could be decided by next month.

Usain Bolt Shares Winning Tips with Rising Australian Sprint Star Gout Gout After National Title Triumph

0

Legendary Olympian Usain Bolt has imparted some crucial wisdom to rising sprint star Gout Gout, cautioning the young Australian athlete to brace himself for the challenges ahead. Bolt, renowned for his unparalleled achievements in sprinting, emphasized the need for Gout to be mindful of his off-track decisions as he navigates his burgeoning career.

Gout has recently made headlines with his impressive performance on the track, clocking in at 19.67 seconds in the 200m at the national championships. This remarkable feat not only highlights his talent but also surpasses Bolt’s own time at the same age, before the Jamaican sprinter went on to become the most decorated in the sport’s history.

While acknowledging Gout as a “massive young talent,” Bolt stressed that the young athlete’s success hinges on more than just his speed. In an interview with CNN Sport, Bolt advised Gout to carefully choose his inner circle, underscoring the significance of surrounding himself with the right people who can guide him wisely as he progresses.

Despite describing Gout as a ‘massive young talent’, Bolt said it was his moves off the track that he needed to pay attention to.

Speaking to CNN Sport, Bolt said Gout needed to surround himself with the right people.

‘At that young age, because I was there, you start getting pulled left and right and then you forget track and field,’ he said.

‘Hopefully, he has the right set of people to guide him and keep him focused on track and field because the rest of the stuff will always be there.’

After Gout broke his own Australian 200m record at the national athletics championships, he was forced to deal with ‘haters’ who questioned his time.

The likes of former Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin and US College sprinter Erin Brown cast doubt on Gout’s glittering achievement, with the latter incorrectly stating the Brisbane teenager was significantly aided by an illegal tailwind.

The 200m run was legal, with a 1.7m/s tailwind at Sydney Olympic Park.

Brown declared Gout will be a ‘laughing stock’ and has been ‘set up for failure’ when he competes overseas in Diamond League meets later this year.

‘I thought we really witnessed something special… a million people text me, man, Gout Gout just ran 19.6,’ Brown told his social media followers.

‘That made me inclined to go check the results. Not gonna lie, and if you say this s**t is hating, your ass is coping, because you wanna be different.

‘This s**t is clearly fake. Obviously, overtly, this is as fake as it comes.’

Gout was questioned by journalists about some ‘salty’ comments emerging from America – and he laughed off the criticism.

‘There are always going to be haters, if you’ve got haters it means you’re doing something right,’ he said.

‘It is what it is, I never take it (to heart), I just keep running… obviously, it (200m time) was pretty fast, so that’s maybe why they (haters) were a bit mad.

‘It motivates me to do it in even bigger races, for sure.’

Bolt, who holds the 200m world record of 19.19, which was set in 2009, also warned Gout about entering open age athletics, which isn’t far away.

Dominating his own age group is one thing, but taking on all comers is another, Bolt said.

‘I remember coming out of high school going on the circuit, I felt like I was on top of the world because I was winning and running good,’ he said.

‘When I got on the circuit, I didn’t win one race. I know it’s going to be an eye-opener, and I hope it doesn’t get him down but motivate him to work even harder.

‘I think in the first year you will learn a lot and understand what you need to do to be better. He’s a massive young talent.’

Gout’s next major target will be the world under-20 championships, in Eugene, Oregon, in August.

It will be his final world under 20s performance before he enters open age competition.

He will get a dose of open age competition when he makes his senior Diamond League debut in June in Oslo, Norway.

He’s expected to face 2024 Paris Olympics 200m gold medallist Letsile Tebogo in Oslo. Tebogo’s 200m personal best is 19.46 seconds – two tenths faster than Gout’s recent best time.

Brave Stance: Joseph Duggar’s Alleged Victim Speaks Out Without Fear

Joseph Duggar’s alleged victim remains resolute and courageous in the face of the attention surrounding the case, refusing to let fear dictate her actions.

“Coming forward was a significant step for her, but she is not intimidated,” a source exclusively revealed to Us Weekly. “She’s strong and determined not to hide.”

Last month, it was confirmed by Us Weekly that Duggar, 31, was arrested in Arkansas following allegations of sexual abuse made by a girl now aged 14, who was just 9 years old at the time of the alleged incident.

According to a press release from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Duggar faces charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, including molestation of a minor under 12 years old, and engaging in such conduct as someone aged 18 or older.

Duggar Family Members React to Joseph Duggar’s Arrest

The arrest has prompted reactions from various members of the Duggar family. Joseph Duggar, known for his role in the reality series “19 Kids and Counting,” was detained in connection with accusations of molesting a 9-year-old girl during a family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida.

The former 19 Kids and Counting star has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and his lawyers deny the allegations.

While the identity of the alleged victim has yet to be revealed, a source told Us that the accuser is close to the family of Joseph’s wife, Kendra Duggar.

“[Kendra’s parents] Christina and Paul Caldwell are not hiding the fact that Joseph’s victim is [close to the Caldwell family],” the insider shared. “Christina has told other members of their church, but she is not sure she wants to talk about it so publicly. That is what she is struggling with, but she is not hiding it.”

As for why the alleged victim waited to come forward and report the crime, the source said that she may have taken time to process what transpired.

“When [the alleged sexual assault] happened, Joseph was on vacation with Kendra and her family,” the insider claimed. “No other Duggar [family members] were there. … As years passed, [the alleged victim] understood more and got the courage to tell her family. Just like the police report says, when she told her family, they acted on it.”

Us has reached out to the Caldwells and attorneys for Kendra and Joseph Duggar for comment.

Al Sauline, who is serving as one of Joseph’s lawyers, told Us in a statement, “Mr. Duggar maintains the same presumption of innocence as any individual as guaranteed under our United States Constitution. It remains our number one goal to ensure Mr. Duggar is treated fairly, notwithstanding his celebrity status.”

As the investigation continues, both Kendra, 27, and Joseph’s parents have spoken out about the case that has made nationwide headlines.

Less than two weeks after Joseph was initially arrested, Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle Duggar broke their silence regarding their son’s legal woes.

Joseph Duggar Wife Kendra Is Totally on His Family Side After Arrests

Kendra Duggar is not distancing herself from Joseph Duggar and his family amid his legal struggles. “I don’t know if it’s fear or naivete, but Kendra has totally sided with the Duggars and not her family,” a source exclusively shared with Us Weekly. “She is brainwashed.” According to the insider, “not many people are there […]

“Jim Bob and Michelle are heartbroken over this entire situation,” a spokesperson for the Duggar family told Us in a statement. “Right now, they are focused on loving their family and helping Kendra and her children during this difficult time. They are praying for the victim. They ask for privacy and appreciate the kind words and prayers offered by so many.”

On April 15, Kendra’s family spoke out for the first time on social media and said they were “ troubled and heartbroken over the alleged actions committed by our son-in-law.”

“We are devastated for the young girl, a child who was courageous in every way to share her truth. We stand by her, both in support and prayer, and forever will,” the statement read via Instagram. “Our love for this child remains at the forefront of our family’s priorities and minds. We are proud of her for being strong enough to share her story while also retaining her own identity and joy.”
