Daring Attempt to Swipe Lego Set Uncovered

0

A man from California has been apprehended for allegedly orchestrating an audacious scheme involving Lego sets and uncooked pasta.

Authorities report that 28-year-old Jarrelle Augustine of Paramount is accused of purchasing expensive Lego kits from Target stores nationwide on at least 70 occasions, removing the original pieces and minifigures, and replacing them with bags of uncooked pasta before returning the sets to receive refunds.

The Irvine Police Department states that Augustine’s fraudulent activities resulted in over $34,000 worth of transactions before his arrest on Thursday. He now faces charges of grand theft.

Target employees began to suspect foul play when customers returned with complaints after discovering pasta instead of the expected Lego pieces in their purchases. This led to investigations and increased scrutiny of returned merchandise, as reported by Fox 8.

Once the police were notified of the unusual crime, officers conducted surveillance at various Target locations across Orange County, eventually identifying Augustine as the primary suspect.

Among the evidence police have collected is an instruction book for building a Star Wars Venator-Class Attack Cruiser, which retails for $80, according to photos the police department released online.

Another picture showed the box to a Marvel Avengers Tower Building Set, a 5,201-piece kit that retails for $500 on the Lego website.

Several bags of Goya brand elbow-shaped pasta, which sell for less than $2 a bag, are seen in front of the box.

Augustine was booked into the Orange County jail for his alleged crimes, but has since been released, The New York Times reports.

In the meantime, Target is expected to continue auditing its inventory to determine whether any other pasta-filled boxes remain on the shelves or in the return cycle, Fox 11 reports.

Prosecutors will also review the 70-linked cases to determine whether any additional charges could be filed across the various jurisdictions where the thefts occurred.

But Augustine is not the only alleged thief to target Legos.

On April 8, three California men were charged with cargo theft after being stopped while fleeing in two box trucks filled with $1 million worth of the plastic bricks, and in October, police in the Golden State broke up a Lego theft ring that focused on reselling small character figurines.

Some thieves have even managed to grab more than $100,000 worth of Legos in burglaries – as the bricks can sell for hundreds of dollars, according to The Times.

The Lego Death Star retails for about $1,000, for example, and some kits and minifigures have seen their prices widely market up, such as the Lego San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Spider-Man, which is assessed at more than $15,000, according to BrickEconomy, a site dedicated to the economics of Legos.

Read Hayes, a research scientist and criminologist at the University of Florida who also serves as executive director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, said it was possible Augustine’s use of uncooked pasta was meant to simulate the sound the pieces make inside the box.

‘They’re not just stolen, they’re highly purchased,’ he said of the brick-building toy.

‘Legos seem to be fairly persistent because they’re very good at coming out with new, desirable things,’ Hayes noted of the company, which has expanded its market to include Lego kits aimed at adults – including a model of the Notre-Dame cathedral.

But the Irvine Police Department is now urging others not to replicate Augustine’s scheme.

‘If your master plan involves swapping Legos for linguine, we can promise your plan will be cooked al dente,’ the department wrote on Facebook.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Target for comment.

Final Shortlist Announced: Nine Stars to Compete in Dress Rehearsal for ‘Strictly’ Presenter Role

0

BBC executives are reportedly conducting auditions for the new hosts of Strictly Come Dancing, with nine contenders vying for the coveted roles this week.

After Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly stepped down from their hosting duties last year, the network is eager to find a fresh duo to lead the popular dance competition into a new era.

These nine hopefuls have been called to a highly confidential location in London, where they will compete in full-scale dress rehearsals complete with a judging panel and live band.

Throughout the week, from Monday to Friday, BBC is orchestrating these covert auditions and chemistry tests. The participating celebrities have been required to sign strict non-disclosure agreements to maintain secrecy around the process.

According to a source quoted by The Sun, “This isn’t just about reading off a teleprompter. They’ll be assessing how well candidates gel together, and humor plays a significant role. It’s all up for grabs.”

The chosen few who have been called to the final test will be watched closely and bosses are hoping to make a decision soon.

Among those confirmed to be stepping into the spotlight are Rylan Clark, Emma Willis, Tom Allen, podcast host Angela Scanlon and One Show presenter Alex Jones.

Other stars summoned to the tryouts are This Morning host Alison Hammond, The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh, RuPaul’s Drag Race star La Voix and Radio 2’s Zoe Ball.

A source said: ‘They really want to bring the fun this year. It’s all about chemistry who clicks instantly and can keep the energy up live on air.

‘They could stick with two female hosts as that’s worked brilliantly. But they’re also open to mixing it up.

‘If Rylan and Tom Allen click, that could be a hilarious pairing. Equally, they could even introduce a third presenter to shake things up.’

Bosses are believed to be testing a range of combinations and nothing is off the table.

Daily Mail have contacted the BBC representatives for comment.

It comes as Claudia revealed she plans to watch this year’s Strictly Come Dancing with Tess.

The pair stepped away from hosting the BBC dancing show last year and speculation as to who will replace them has been rife.

But while Claudia, 54, and Tess, 57, won’t be fronting the show, the Traitors host has revealed they plan to watch the Strictly launch together when it returns later this year.

Speaking to The Mirror, Claudia said: ‘Tess and I have already planned… we are having jacket potatoes and I am having the salmon.

‘She is coming to ours, her and Vern (husband Vernon Kay), I am not joking.’

She added: ‘I am going to set her up with a nightie and we are going to watch and support and love it.’

Earlier this week Alison backtracked on rejecting the Strictly Come Dancing hosting job – insisting she’d be ‘crazy’ to turn down the opportunity.

This Morning and The Great British Bake Off star Alison, 51, has long been among the rumoured names to join the programme.

She previously distanced herself from the coveted gig, saying she was busy with her existing TV projects.

Alison told Radio Times: ‘I’m so busy babes, that I’m not sure it’s going to happen. It’s unrealistic.

‘I would have loved to have done it – anybody that gets it, they’re going to land the perfect job. But I’m so happy with everything I’ve got. What would I drop, to do Strictly?’

However in a new interview, Alison has since clarified her stance on taking over the ballroom.

Speaking to Metro, she revealed: ‘Do you think I would turn down Strictly if Strictly came along?

‘Who would turn down Strictly! They’d be absolutely crazy.’

Alison continued: ‘I was trying to back them off because ultimately everyone keeps putting my name in the mix and they’re ruining my chances of even getting on to Strictly, d’you know what I mean? You all need to stop talking about it because I need to get in.’

She concluded: ‘I’m not too busy, I’m fitter than I’ve ever been before.

‘I can do Strictly. I can do it all. All these people saying: “I’m too busy, and I can’t do it…”, I could do Strictly. Let’s put that on the record.’

Elsewhere Bradley Walsh became a frontrunner for the new host of Strictly Come Dancing.

Last week, it was reported filming for The Chase has been halted for ‘at least a year’.

Bradley, 65, who has presented the show since 2009, is said to be one of producers’ favourites to join the BBC dancing show.

But TV insiders think the presenter could be faced with a huge dilemma as he is the face of another huge Saturday night show, Gladiators.

Bradley and his son Barney, 28, brought back the nineties reboot in 2024, with the show becoming an instant ratings hit.

It has so far spanned three series, two celebrity versions and CBBC spin-off, with many of the Gladiators making a string of TV appearances including Strictly Come Dancing and The Great British Sewing Bee.

If Bradley was to get the Strictly job, he may have to walk away from Gladiators which has helped launched his son’s presenting career.

US-Iran Tensions Soar: Strait of Hormuz Ship Seizures Threaten Peace Talks

0

in brief

  • Iran has lifted and then reimposed its own blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, creating economic chaos.
  • The US and Iran remain at loggerheads as a second round of peace talks nears.

US President Donald Trump has revealed that an Iranian cargo vessel attempting to breach a blockade has been seized by American forces. In response, Iran has vowed retaliation, casting doubt on the already fragile ceasefire, which is scheduled to last only two more days.

In a related development, Iran has decided against participating in a second round of peace talks, despite President Trump’s caution regarding the possibility of renewed airstrikes.

The maritime blockade, now entering its third week, continues to drive global oil prices higher. Efforts to ease the situation remain stagnant, as Iran has alternated between lifting and reinstating its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

On Sunday, Trump stated that US forces had commandeered an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to circumvent the blockade near the Strait.

“We have full custody of their ship and are inspecting its contents!” Trump declared on social media, noting that US troops had disabled the vessel by breaching its engine room.

Iran’s military said the ship had been travelling from China.

“We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy by the US military,” a military spokesperson said, according to state media.

Iran’s state news agency reported Iran had rejected new peace talks, citing the ongoing blockade, the US’ shifting positions, and “excessive demands”.

Trump had earlier warned Iran that the US would destroy every bridge and power plant in Iran if they rejected his terms, continuing a pattern of such threats throughout the war.

Iran has said that if the US were to attack its civilian infrastructure, it would hit power stations and desalination plants of Gulf Arab neighbours.

Pakistan, which has served as the main mediator, appeared to be preparing for peace talks between the two countries.

Peace talks

Trump said his envoys would arrive in Islamabad on Monday evening, one day before a two-week ceasefire ends.

A White House official had said the US delegation would be headed by US vice president JD Vance, who led the war’s first peace talks a week ago and also include Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Two giant US C-17 cargo planes landed at an air base on Sunday afternoon, carrying security equipment and vehicles in preparation for the US delegation’s arrival, two Pakistani security sources said.

Municipal authorities in the capital city of Islamabad halted public transport and heavy-goods traffic.

Barbed wire was rolled out near the Serena Hotel, where last week’s talks were held. The hotel has told all guests to leave.

The apparent diplomatic setback could set the stage for a renewed surge in oil prices when markets reopen after the weekend.

Now in its eighth week, the war has created the most severe shock to global energy supplies in history, sending oil prices surging because of the de facto closure of the strait.

Thousands of people have been killed by US-Israeli strikes on Iran and in an Israeli invasion of Lebanon conducted in parallel since the war began on 28 February. Iran responded to the attacks with missiles and drones against its Arab neighbours that host US bases.

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, had earlier said the two sides had made progress but were still far apart on nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz.

Renowned psychologist and commentator Jordan Peterson is grappling with a severe neurological disorder linked to medications prescribed for mental health issues, according to his daughter, Mikhaila Peterson.

In an emotional 35-minute video posted to X, Mikhaila Peterson, the Canadian doctor’s daughter, revealed that Peterson has been suffering from akathisia, claiming it has had a “catastrophic” impact on him.

The condition, known as akathisia, disrupts a person’s ability to remain still, causing an overwhelming and uncontrollable urge to move.

Jordan Peterson started suffering akathisia symptoms last year, according to his daughter Mikhaila.

Mikhaila revealed that her father’s symptoms significantly worsened in the middle of last year, attributing the escalation to stress and a mold issue following a house move.

“Complications arose a month later when he developed pneumonia and subsequent sepsis,” she explained.

She also mentioned that it has been six years since her father last used medications for psychological conditions.

He had previously suffered from negative health impacts from benzodiazepine dependence, which he underwent treatment for.

Mikhaila said she was not planning on making another update about the condition of her father.

“I don’t plan on making another update about my dad, it stresses my family out, and myself, and there’s nothing more to say about it until things get better,” she said.

Jordan Peterson came to prominence through his Youtube channel, where he argued against a Canadian bill c-16, which would prohibit discrimination against gender identity and expression.

He is also an author, publishing two books, the second of which – 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote for Chaos – he promoted with a world tour, visiting Australia.

Gronkowski Hints at Surprising Career Shift for Brady Amid Dispute with Logan Paul

0

Rob Gronkowski, the former NFL standout, has hinted at a potential comeback for his ex-teammate Tom Brady, but not in the way fans might expect.

Gronkowski suggested that Brady, who officially hung up his cleats in 2023, might venture into the wrestling arena following a recent spat with Logan Paul.

The legendary quarterback, who clinched seven Super Bowl titles, found himself in an unexpected clash with Paul earlier this year after he questioned the wrestler’s athletic prowess.

As the excitement builds for WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas this weekend, Gronkowski speculated that Brady could be gearing up to enter the ring and demonstrate his own skills to Paul.

“It makes sense because Tom and Logan Paul have been at odds for a couple of months now,” Gronkowski explained, sharing his thoughts exclusively with the Daily Mail in collaboration with DoorDash before the WrestleMania event.

‘I thought they were going to fight at the flag football game, but it just didn’t come to that situation, which is good. We didn’t need any fights on that flag football field.

Former NFL star Rob Gronkowski (left) has suggested Tom Brady (right) could try wrestling

‘It’s a friendly game, it’s a family game but I thought they would take it out here at WrestleMania, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s here, but I don’t know if he is or not.’

Brady had dismissed Paul’s athlete chops as ‘cute’ while claiming he lacks the toughness of football players back in February ahead of the Fanatics Flag Football Classic event.

In response, Paul argued that he could beat the majority of NFL athletes in a fight – a statement which has sparked fierce debate – before the pair further ignited their feud after both playing in the flag football showdown in March.

Many questioned how real Paul and Brady’s apparent disdain for one another is, instead rubbishing it as an attempt to generate attention.

One insider previously claimed to the Daily Mail that they were only playing on the feud to promote a potential storyline that could see Brady appear at the WWE’s showpiece WrestleMania event and disrupt Paul’s match on the night.

‘I think he would do great,’ Gronkowski added when asked about how he thinks Brady would fare in the ring.

‘I don’t think he’d be like a full-time wrestler and actually have a match. I think he would have like a little cameo, kind of like Jelly Roll last night, how he dropped Pat McAfee through the announcing table, which was epic. That was fun.’

Polarizing ESPN star McAfee was forced to exit WrestleMania on a stretcher after being sent through a table by singer Jelly Roll on Saturday night.

‘I watched all of WrestleMania yesterday in my hotel room,’ Gronkowski added. ‘It was a blast. I would say a little cameo like that for Tom, where he jumps off top rope and like elbows somebody and like takes their hat and throws it like a football.’

When pressed about his friend’s assessment of ‘cute’ wrestling, Gronkowski brushed it off as trash talk, insisting that Brady respects the sport.

‘Tom is just becoming a professional trash-talker now,’ he said. ‘I’m sure he respects everyone’s craft and he was just going at it with Logan Paul at the moment.

‘But I thought it was great – I thought it was entertaining – them two going at it and Tom talking trash about the WWE and that it’s cute. And Logan Paul going back at Tom, talking about his football career. All of that was fun and games. It was cool and fun to watch a collaboration of Tom going at it with a couple wrestlers and everyone talking garbage back and forth.’

He continued: ‘I respect everything that the WWE wrestlers do, the hard work that goes in. I’m sure Tom does, too.

‘Like I said, he was just being cute with his comments but I respect everything they do – from their lifting regime to how they’ve got to prepare for the matches in the ring to being able to memorize all of their promotions and going out in the ring and talking all of the garbage in front of millions of fans. I respect everything that they do big time.’

Gronkowski, who won four Super Bowls alongside Brady, is set to host Gronk Beach in Las Vegas later on Sunday night.

The event will serve as the official afterparty of WrestleMania, sponsored by DoorDash. Before the action got underway, the former football player was spotted on the Vegas strip interacting with fans.

In partnership with the delivery service app and Medium Rare, Gronkowski played a game with fans in front of the Fountains of Bellagio to see what they had in their bag with DoorDash vouchers being awarded as prizes.

Two U.S. Embassy Officials Tragically Killed in Mexico Car Accident

Tragedy struck on Sunday when two officials from the U.S. Embassy lost their lives in a car accident, alongside a Mexican official and a police officer from Chihuahua, Mexico.

Prior to the accident, the group had cooperated to dismantle a drug laboratory in the Morelos municipality, as reported by Reuters.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, expressed his condolences on the social media platform X, stating, “This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by Mexican and U.S. officials committed to safeguarding our communities.”

He further emphasized, “It reinforces our determination to uphold their mission and further our mutual dedication to security and justice, ensuring the safety of our people.”

As of now, the State Department has not provided The Hill with the identities of the deceased embassy officials.

The incident follows the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho.”

Cervantes was killed by the Mexican military in February, and violent outbursts erupted following his death. A total of 30 cartel members and 25 Mexican National Guard members were killed in the days after the gang leader’s death.

Tragic Domestic Violence Shooting Claims Lives of Eight Children in Louisiana, Authorities Report

0

in brief

  • At least 10 people were shot, but police have not given details on the status of surviving victims.
  • Police are classifying the incident as a ‘domestic disturbance’.

In a tragic incident in Louisiana, eight children, ranging in age from one to 14, lost their lives in a mass shooting overnight. Authorities have labeled the event as an act of domestic violence. The shooter was killed by police during a pursuit, as confirmed by local officials.

According to Christopher Bordelon, a spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department, seven of the children’s bodies were discovered inside a residence. The eighth child was fatally shot while attempting to flee across the rooftop, as reported by local television station KTBS.

In total, the shooting resulted in ten people being injured, police have stated.

Initial investigations suggest that the violence began when the suspect shot a woman. He then proceeded a short distance to the home where the children resided, as detailed in a post on the Shreveport police’s Facebook page.

Bordelon described the scene as “incredibly gruesome” in his comments to KTBS.

Police have identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins, Leigh Anne Evensky, director of communications for the Shreveport mayor’s office, told the Reuters news agency.

The shooting occurred just after 6am on Sunday local time (9pm AEST), Bordelon said.

“This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” Shreveport mayor Tom Arceneaux said.

A comprehensive domestic violence centre is being established by the Caddo Parish sheriff, which the mayor’s office is working to support, Arceneaux later told Reuters.

At a news conference, Louisiana state senator Sam Jenkins, whose district includes much of Shreveport, said the shooting underscores the need for more resources to combat domestic violence.

“If we have someone with a history of domestic violence, let’s make sure that those resources, that intervention is there on a continuous and consistent basis, hopefully to avoid what we’ve seen here today,” Jenkins said.

Reuters was unable to immediately determine whether Elkins had such a history.

US House of Representatives speaker Mike Johnson, a Shreveport native, on social media called the shooting a “heartbreaking tragedy.” Louisiana governor Jeff Landry said on social media that he and his wife were “praying for everyone affected.”

Not including Sunday’s incident in Shreveport, the Gun Violence Archive lists at least 119 mass shootings in the United States this year, resulting in 117 deaths, including 79 children, and 458 people injured.

The archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed by gunfire.

The United States had 407 mass shootings last year, according to archive data.

Which Nations Have Banned Kanye West Concerts? Discover the Surprising List!

Kanye 'Ye' West walking outside in LA in a track suit in 2024

Notable People

Several countries have decided to prohibit Kanye West from performing within their borders. Here’s a look at where the artist is currently unwelcome.

Ye, who was previously known as Kanye West, is facing increasing challenges as he attempts to book concert dates across Europe. His past controversial statements, particularly those deemed antisemitic, have led various nations to deny him entry. Despite issuing a public apology for his offensive remarks, many countries remain unconvinced. Below is a list of places that have turned away Ye from performing.

Kanye West is struggling to play concerts on his European tour

One notable incident involves Poland, where Ye was scheduled to hold a concert this June. Due to his history of antisemitic comments, Polish authorities have decided to cancel the event.

“The decision to organize a Kanye West concert in Poland is unacceptable,” Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska said on social media. “We are talking about an artist who has publicly expressed antisemitic views, downplayed crimes, and profited from selling swastika T-shirts. These are not ‘controversies.’ This is a deliberate crossing of boundaries and the normalization of hatred.”

Cienkowska said allowing West to perform in Poland felt incredibly inappropriate given the country’s history with the Holocaust.

“Artistic freedom does not mean giving a free pass to everything,” she added. “Culture cannot be a space for those who exploit it to spread hatred.”

Poland is the latest country to block Ye from performing. The United Kingdom banned him, leading to the cancellation of Wireless Festival, which he was set to headline. In 2025, Australia barred his entry because of his song “Heil Hitler.” France is also considering banning Ye. He voluntarily postponed a concert in Marseille as the country deliberates on the future of his show. Politicians in the country have campaigned to keep him out.

“I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unabashed Nazism,” Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan said. “Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of living together and belonging to all Marseillais.”

Despite the growing number of countries who have banned Ye, others have allowed him to perform.
