In a rare public appearance on Monday, an iconic heartthrob from the 1980s turned heads with a strikingly different look while out and about in Los Angeles.

Now at 66, the actor seems worlds apart from his heyday as part of the legendary Brat Pack, which famously included Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.

This group of young stars captivated audiences with their standout performances in timeless coming-of-age classics like “The Breakfast Club” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” where this actor was a significant presence.

Sporting a black overcoat paired with camouflage pants, the former teen idol finished off his eclectic outfit with a retro motorcycle helmet and a backpack slung casually over one shoulder.

However, it was his long, gray beard and rugged facial hair that left fans doing a double-take, wondering if this was indeed the same actor who once portrayed Brooke Shields’s clean-cut boss in “Suddenly Susan.”

Born November 28, 1959, in Portland, Maine, Nelson’s Hollywood career took off with Making the Grade (1984), but it was his role as rebel John Bender in The Breakfast Club that made him a household name.  

It’s long been rumored that Nelson almost got fired from The Breakfast Club due to his intense commitment to method acting. 

According to reports, he took his role as the rebellious Bender so seriously that he stayed in character even when the cameras weren’t rolling, which apparently rubbed director John Hughes the wrong way. 

In fact, Hughes was said to have considered letting Nelson go due to his behavior on set. 

However, the rest of the cast, who had formed a close bond during filming, reportedly rallied behind Nelson, urging Hughes to keep him in the movie. 

Hughes ultimately decided to keep the controversial actor, and Nelson’s portrayal of John Bender went on to become one of his most iconic performances. 

Following this success, Nelson solidified his place in 80s pop culture with memorable roles in St Elmo’s Fire (1985), where he played the charming but conflicted Alec, and Blue City (1986), further establishing himself as one of the decade’s top stars.

In the late 80s and early 90s, Nelson expanded his range with roles in films like New Jack City (1991), where he played a tough cop, and the slapstick comedy Airheads (1994), showing that he could evolve beyond his heartthrob status.

Television also saw a resurgence for Nelson, particularly with his standout role as Jack Richmond, the tough but loveable boss in the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan (1996-1999). 

The role marked a significant turning point in Nelson’s career as he shifted from leading man in teen films to a more established TV actor.

By the 2000s, Nelson moved into a range of TV and direct-to-video projects. 

He made appearances on hit shows like Psych and Two and a Half Men, while also reprising his voice role as Hot Rod in the animated Transformers series. 

His career didn’t slow down, as he made memorable appearances in cult favorites like The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009), and continued to work steadily in both film and TV, never quite leaving the public eye. 

In his personal life, the actor remains quite private. 

However, he has been romantically linked to several women in the entertainment industry, including a 1993 engagement to actress Shannen Doherty, as well as relationships with talent manager Loree Rodkin and model Kelly Stafford.

On Wednesday, the two suspects, Emir Balat, aged 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, aged 19, pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against them. The pair allegedly traveled from Pennsylvania to New York City with the intention of launching this attack.

The incident took place on March 7, when the suspects purportedly tossed live explosive devices during a protest outside the residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Fortunately, the bombs failed to detonate, and no injuries were reported.

During their court appearance, Balat and Kayumi faced eight charges, which include conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Both firmly denied the allegations by entering not guilty pleas.

Appearing in federal court Wednesday, both Balat and Kayumi pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including conspiracy to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

Balat and Kayumi appeared in court wearing beige prison jumpsuits and shackles and remained motionless as they responded to the judge regarding the next steps in their case. 

During the arraignment, Kayumi’s lawyers pointed to his client’s family members, who were seated in the courtroom and came to show their support. 

Upon being referenced, an older man in the group grew emotional and proceeded to wipe away tears.

Prosecutors told the judge they are continuing to comb through the “voluminous” discovery in the case, and asked to be granted an additional three weeks to review evidence. 

Authorities are also still working to gather information from multiple electronic devices seized from the pair’s vehicle and their respective homes. 

“As alleged, just weeks ago, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi carried out a terrorist attack on the streets of New York,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton previously said in a statement. “They sought to murder multiple innocent victims in the name of ISIS. The brave women and men of the NYPD responded immediately, and Balat and Kayumi were arrested on site.”

“Since their attack, our partners at the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force have uncovered evidence revealing the alleged meticulous planning by the defendants in their attack, including a notebook with detailed attack plans and a storage unit containing explosive residue and bomb-making materials,” he added.

As Kayumi was being arrested, an individual from the surrounding crowd asked him why he carried out the alleged attack, to which he replied, “ISIS,” according to authorities. 

Prosecutors allege that while speaking to law enforcement, Balat said he hoped the planned attack would be “bigger than the Boston Marathon bombing.”

Dashcam video recorded as the pair were traveling to New York also allegedly captured their discussions surrounding the planning of the attempted attack, according to the indictment. 

“What do you think? Are they going to remove the airplanes for us … over New York? Are they going to stop them? If we do the attack and the bombs go off and everything?” Balat asked.

“Just can’t wait for that bomb to go off and his freaking head, his body to get split in half bro, dead,” he added.

 “All I know is I want to start terror, bro,” Kayumi allegedly replied, adding, “I want to petrify these people.”

A forensic analysis of the two devices determined that both contained explosives, according to the indictment. 

If convicted, both Balat and Kayumi face the possibility of life in prison.

The pair are due back in court on June 16. 

The fiancé of a lifestyle influencer, who was discovered dead in Zanzibar just days after their engagement, is currently under police investigation.

Ashlee Jenae, whose real name is Ashly Robinson, was found unconscious in her villa at the Zuri Zanzibar resort on April 9. She was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Officials have indicated that the 31-year-old’s death appears to be a suicide.

However, on Tuesday, the Tanzania Police Force revealed that her fiancé, 45-year-old Joe McCann, is still being questioned, and his passport has been confiscated pending further investigation.

Authorities suggested that the influencer’s death might be linked to a heated argument between the newly engaged couple. The altercation reportedly escalated to such an extent that resort staff felt compelled to relocate McCann to a separate room for safety reasons.

McCann, the millionaire founder of crypto fund Asymmetric Financial, said he returned with a security guard to check up on Robinson, and found her hanging from a door. A hospital later listed her death cause of death as cerebral hypoxia by strangulation and suffocation.

It is believed McCann is just being questioned as a witness, as police have previously told local media he is not suspected of any wrongdoing, according to the BBC. 

Robinson’s parents, though, have claimed McCann only alerted them to the tragedy 11 hours later, and has continued to be vague about what happened in the days since.

They have also publicly disputed claims that Robinson would take her own life.

Robinson’s sister Alyssa Endres, 20, also previously told the Daily Mail that her sister was a ‘beautiful’ and high-spirited person, true to the vibrant life she portrayed on social media. 

Endres said a suicide would have been ‘extremely’ out of character for her sibling, and makes no sense given the context. 

‘She was beautiful inside and out, and everyone who knew her knew that,’ Endres said. 

‘Everyone that is standing beside us is really supporting us through all of this because everyone knew that she was a beautiful person, and all she could bring was life to everyone.’ 

The family also released a statement describing her death as ‘suspicious’. 

‘Nothing about this loss feels real,’ the statement reads. ‘One moment she was celebrating love and life in truly Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone. 

‘The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family. 

‘At this time, there is an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ashly’s suspicious passing. 

‘Although we have many questions, we are placing our trust in the officials in Zanzibar and are working closely with them as we seek clarity and answers.’

The influencer’s parents, Yolanda Denise Endres and Harry Robinson, said she had been traveling with McCann, her boyfriend of one year, and appeared to be having the time of her life on the island off Tanzania when they received the news of her death.

‘She was starting the next chapter of her life. She called us to FaceTime us to share with us her travel and her vacation,’ Endres told ABC13.

Robinson’s social media posts echoed the same sentiment. 

‘Chapter 31 and I’m exactly where I need to be,’ she wrote on her final post dated April 7, after describing her vacation as ‘a dream’ three days prior. 

But her mother said Robinson called on April 8 to tell her parents that she had argued with her fiancé, and they had moved to separate rooms. 

The next day, Endres said she received a disturbing call from McCann. 

‘He told me that Ashly did something to herself and she was being taken to the hospital, and he told me she was stable,’ Endres told ABC13. 

‘I said what happened, and he told me, it had been 11 hours prior.’ 

Several hours later, the luxury villa where the couple had been staying broke the news that Robinson had died. 

A hospital report seen by ABC13 stated that Robinson had a mark on her neck, and that her fiancé had ‘found she hung herself on the door’.

Robinson was later taken to another hospital, which listed her cause of death as cerebral hypoxia by strangulation and suffocation.

Endres said there were no signs that her daughter would have taken her own life. 

‘She’s never done anything that would ever ever lead me to believe that she would do something to harm herself like that. She was happy,’ Endres said. 

‘She was loved. She was not just going to be discarded and forgotten about,’ the heartbroken mother added.

Robinson had accrued over 80,000 followers on Instagram by documenting what she called a ‘soft life’ philosophy of positivity, as reported by NeedToKnow.

She often shared loved up photos of herself and McCann to her social media pages, documenting their lavish life together, which appeared to include frequent vacations, including the trip to Tanzania for her birthday on April 5.

McCann proposed to her during a safari on the trip on April 3, as chronicled in a jubilant video shared with her 110,000 Instagram followers. 

Footage shows McCann getting down on one knee before they kissed and held hands while walking among giraffes, zebra and wild cats on the animal tour.

She captioned the post: ‘365 down. Here’s to forever.’

One day before her death, Robinson uploaded photos and video footage of their Zanzibar vacation.

‘If this is a dream, no one wake me up,’ she captioned one carousel which showed her and McCann posing for among zebras.

Following the news of Robinson’s death, her social media pages were flooded with tributes.

Commenting underneath her final Instagram post, uploaded on April 5, one said: ‘My heart is broken hearing what happened.

‘I was just congratulating you a few days ago, this doesn’t feel real.’ 

Another wrote: ‘May you rest in peace Ashlee. May God bring justice and peace to you and your family. Such a bright and beautiful light inside and out.’

A third penned: ‘Rest in peace, my friend I told you that I wanted to meet you, but I will miss you dearly. RIP, my friend, your life was taken too short.’
