In Washington state, a habitual offender with close to 100 arrests finds himself incarcerated once again after leading law enforcement on a perilous pursuit following a spate of retail thefts spanning several counties.
Law enforcement officials have shared footage that captures both the high-speed chase and the apprehension of the suspect.
According to authorities, this marks the suspect’s 98th arrest. He is accused, along with an accomplice, of pilfering thousands of dollars in goods from various stores, employing stolen bags from one outlet to aid in shoplifting from others.
Deputies identified the suspects’ vehicle traveling along Interstate 5 near Olympia. However, before they could pull it over, the driver accelerated, prompting a high-speed pursuit.
Dashcam footage from the police shows deputies in hot pursuit of a pickup truck, with the chase escalating to speeds exceeding 100 mph before the suspects abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot.
Video from the pursuit captures deputies calling out speeds topping 100 miles per hour as the truck raced toward downtown Olympia.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but called off the pursuit when the driver began racing through city streets and intersections, putting others at risk.
A second attempt was also halted for safety reasons as the suspect continued driving recklessly toward Lacey, at times running red lights at speeds near 80 mph, according to radio traffic.

A short time later, the truck was found abandoned near College Street.
Authorities say the suspects ran from the vehicle toward a nearby neighborhood and in the direction of an elementary school, prompting a search.
A K9 team tracked them down minutes later.
Video shows deputies confronting the suspects at gunpoint, repeatedly ordering them to “show me your hands” and “keep walking backwards” before both were taken into custody.

Inside the vehicle, investigators say they found thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise, along with meth, heroin and fentanyl.
Deputies also discovered what they described as a custom-built bong embedded in the dashboard, allegedly allowing the driver to use drugs while behind the wheel.

Authorities say they obtained a warrant to test the driver’s blood as part of a DUI investigation.
The suspect, a four-time convicted felon with dozens of prior convictions and 97 previous arrests, now faces charges including DUI, attempting to flee from police, and drug possession.
He is expected to face additional organized retail theft charges in Lewis County once released from the Thurston County Jail. The second suspect was turned over to another police department in connection with a separate theft case.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office highlighted the suspect’s history and the outcome of the arrest:
“Tonight, he is back in jail for the 98th time on charges of DUI, eluding, and possession of narcotics,” Sheriff Derek Sanders wrote in a post. “Nice work by deputies and dispatchers to get some career criminals into custody… again.”

Travelers passing through Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport should brace for extended wait times exceeding four hours.
This inconvenience stems from a partial government shutdown that has left TSA agents without their salaries.
For over six weeks, these agents have been required to report to their jobs despite not being compensated.
As a result, a significant portion of the workforce is opting to call in sick.
In response, President Trump declared on Sunday that he would deploy ICE agents to airports.
“If the Radical Left Democrats don’t immediately sign an agreement to let our Country, in particular, our Airports, be FREE and SAFE again, I will move our brilliant and patriotic ICE Agents to the Airports where they will do Security like no one has ever seen before, including the immediate arrest of all Illegal Immigrants who have come into our Country, with heavy emphasis on those from Somalia,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“I look forward to seeing ICE in action at our Airports.”
But ICE agents at the airports appear to have made little difference to queue lengths.
Passengers have been taking photos of the heavily armed agents standing around doing nothing at airports across the US.
Meanwhile, the head of the TSA’s union Everett Kelley has decried their use.
“TSA officers spend months learning to detect explosives, weapons and threats specifically designed to evade detection at checkpoints,” Kelley said.
“You cannot improvise that.
“Putting untrained personnel at security checkpoints does not fill a gap. It creates one.”
“This has nothing to do with public safety because it’s making everyone less safe,” she said.
“This is all just meant to intimidate. The cruelty is the point.”
The TSA are unfortunate casualties in a standoff between Democrats and the Trump administration.
Democrats have refused to vote on funding the Department of Homeland Security unless major changes are made to ICE.
They want to require ICE agents to wear identification and not wear masks, wear body cameras and only enter private property with a judicial warrant.
ICE would be prohibited from carrying out immigration enforcement operations at hospitals, schools, childcare facilities, churches, polling places and courts.
But the Trump administration has refused, resulting in funding getting cut for the Department, which includes the TSA.
Yesterday Democrats put forward a bill that would ensure that TSA agents would get paid, but it was knocked back by Republicans.
While TSA agents aren’t getting paid, ICE agents are, thanks to funding in Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill that was passed last year.

Industry specialists are raising concerns that the government is falling short in its efforts to ensure that data centers transition to renewable energy sources and minimize water usage, especially as a wave of artificial intelligence companies prepare to set up in Australia.
Data centers are notorious for their heavy consumption of power and water, and projections indicate that by 2030, they will account for approximately 6% of the energy supplied by the grid.
In response, the government announced on Sunday night its intention to favor development proposals for data centers that adhere to five key expectations, which emphasize sustainable practices in both water and energy consumption.
The newly outlined guidelines also highlight a preference for operators who commit to enhancing worker training and offer affordable computing resources to local startups and researchers.
Globally, Australia ranks second only to the United States in terms of data center construction projects, reflecting a surge in investments worldwide to meet the growing computational demands driven by artificial intelligence innovations.
But experts say a lack of legislation could allow companies to “cut corners” and put the nation’s energy grid and water supply at risk.
“We don’t want these data centres to cannibalise other industries with how much energy it takes from the grid,” professor Seyedali Mirjalili, from the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Optimisation at Adelaide’s Torrens University, told SBS News.
“And obviously, there should be mechanisms to make sure that they don’t impact our household water sources.”
While the expectations aren’t law, they set out how the government will approach major data centre proposals.
These five expectations are:
“The Albanese government expects data centres and AI infrastructure operators to underwrite new renewable power supply, pay their full share of new grid connectivity so costs are not passed to consumers or businesses, and support Australia’s energy transition through demand flexibility mechanisms,” a government statement said.
The expectations follow pressure from interest groups to ensure new data centres are environmentally conscious.
Unions, environmental groups and clean energy industry bodies joined forces in February to demand an energy and water-self-sufficient sector committed to upskilling workers.
Energy has been a particular focus as the nation struggles to roll out renewable sources fast enough to meet climate goals and supply fledgling green export industries.
Data centres consume about 2 per cent of grid-supplied electricity in Australia, but that share is expected to triple by 2030 due to the AI surge.
The International Energy Agency estimated in 2024 that a ChatGPT query required 2.9 watt-hours — roughly 10 times as much energy as a typical Google search. US research has also indicated it takes about half a litre of water for ChatGPT to process 20 to 50 queries.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has dismissed those figures, saying in a post on his blog last year that the average query used about 0.34 watt-hours, and used 0.000085 gallons of water.
Data centres worldwide consumed 1-2 per cent of overall power two years ago, according to Goldman Sachs Research, but this percentage will likely rise to 3-4 per cent by the end of the decade, an increase of 160 per cent.
In addition to bringing their own clean energy or storage to offset demand on the grid, operators will be expected to cover the full share of power connection costs and support network stability.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen said it was important to get the investment settings right to keep the electricity system secure and prices low.
“Data centres have great potential to support our grid and expand new renewable investment,” he said.
Sustainable water use will also be viewed favourably to protect local drinking supplies, with recycled and non-potable water use encouraged where possible.
Ascelin Gordon, a senior lecturer at RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research, told SBS News the incoming data centres could have long-term impacts.
“There can be a big difference between what is proposed and what ends up rolling out on the ground 10 years later when the data centre’s actually up and operating as well,” he said.
“Firstly, all the power use and infrastructure to connect to the power grid is going to drive up power prices for everyone in the long term.”
There are several ways companies can mitigate their effect on energy and water supplies, such as using air cooling, which requires less water usage, Gordon added.
“There’s now current technologies that can drastically reduce water use, but I don’t think they are mandated in any way yet,” he said.
A lack of government mandate means companies could take shortcuts or not implement best practices.
Mirjalili said that data centres with AI infrastructure are needed to keep Australian companies competitive against foreign firms.
“AI is now almost like electricity or water. It’s a utility now that you need it in pretty much any investment,” he said.
Given its importance in many Australian industries, Mirjalili said the focus should be on striking a balance between promoting innovation and watertight legislation.
“We don’t want to do too much regulation, regulate too much, and you slow down innovation, but at the same time, we don’t want to keep it too open and too loose so that companies start cutting corners and impact our existing infrastructure,” he said.
Gordon said that Australia could consider wider use of a star rating system for all data centres developed by the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) to ensure they remain sustainable when built and in the long term.
The Australian government now requires all data centres hosting federal agency workloads to have a NABERS five-star rating.
“It just seems to me crazy that we’re not making it an absolute requirement for new data centres to have a five-star rating, given we’ve got this fairly rigorous rating system up and running, rather than just having this expectation that data centres will use renewable energy and be efficient with their water use,” Gordon said.

A British midwife who relocated to Canada in pursuit of a new beginning following her husband’s passing now faces the threat of deportation due to an issue with an English language test.
Heather Gilchrist, who practices as a registered midwife in Victoria, British Columbia, finds her career and life in turmoil after Canadian immigration authorities claimed she did not upload her language test results with her application.
Gilchrist, originally from Perthshire and a fluent English speaker, insists she completed the language test last July but encountered no option to submit the results online.
Furthermore, she notes that the application checklist made no reference to the requirement of the test.
As a result of this oversight, her work permit has been revoked, placing her at risk of being deported back to the UK, Gilchrist explained in an interview with CityNews.
Gilchrist, who had originally studied at the University of Glasgow, said she has built a highly successful practice, training twice as many midwives in Scotland as are currently registered in BC over the years, yet immigration officials have not taken her experience into account.
‘It just doesn’t make any sense, and I just need someone to lift their head and understand that it can’t be this faceless system,’ she told the outlet.
‘You have someone as qualified as myself, and you’re pushing them out the door.’

The ‘How to Apply’ web page on the government’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) site for post-graduate work permits has since added a note that tells people how the test must be uploaded upon application submission, but that was only added in December.
The disclaimer wasn’t there when a number of people applied and were later denied because they did not include their results, like Gilchrist.
The issue became so dire that a Change.org petition pushing to end the ‘unfair PGWP refusals by IRCC,’ and to reinstate applicants who were rejected over the language test, has been launched online.
As of Monday afternoon, more than 1,487 people have signed the petition.
Because of her denial, Gilchrist had to immediately stop practicing, leaving her life in limbo.
‘You are going to have me leave, and yet you seem so proud of the people you’re attracting,’ she said as the news of her citizenship ordeal came after the Ministry of Health announced its progress in recruiting health professionals from America.
Gilchrist added: ‘I’m already here, and now I have to leave? Doesn’t make any sense.’
She said midwives often get overlooked, especially when compared to nurses and doctors.

But Gilchrist has already shelled out $60,000 to start her new life in BC and can’t afford to wait and see what will happen next for her and her patients.
‘That phrase about throwing the baby out with the bathwater seems more relevant than ever as a midwife, because that’s what’s happening right now,’ she stated.

People saw this shiny, new persona, but there was so much more depth to me. I’m still on a journey to discover my path.” This personal exploration is echoed in her role as Shimmer, a character she describes with enthusiasm.

“There was a mystery inherent in it,” Elise explains to Parents. “Why is he a Pout-Pout Fish? It wasn’t enough for me that he was just born looking like that. No, there had to be a story behind it.”
She continues, “To expand it into a whole world… there’s a lot of world-building you have to do, which I love. I have deep respect for authors. For me, getting the opportunity to take someone’s story and expand it and enhance it, but always keep the core of what makes the book so good, that’s a process that I love.”

A U.S. Park Police officer has been shot in Southeast Washington, D.C., according to a statement from the D.C. Police Union on Monday.
“We can confirm that a member of the U.S. Park Police was shot in the 5000 block of Queens Stroll Place SE,” the union announced on social media platform X. “The officer was taken to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and the @1791FOP during this difficult time.”
Efforts to acquire more details from the Metropolitan Police Department are ongoing, as Fox News Digital has reached out for further information.
In response to the shooting, authorities have closed off several blocks in the area, limiting access for both vehicles and pedestrians. This was reported by FOX 5 in D.C., which noted that the closures impact sections of Benning Road SE and nearby residential streets, including the 5000 to 5100 block of Queens Stroll Place SE and the 4600 block of Hillside Road SE.
The closures include areas along Benning Road SE as well as nearby residential streets, including the 5000 through 5100 block of Queens Stroll Place SE and the 4600 block of Hillside Road SE.

Officials said no vehicular or pedestrian traffic is allowed in the affected zones and are urging the public to avoid the area and follow police directions. Closures remain subject to change.
The station also reported a heavy law enforcement presence remains as investigators work to determine what led to the shooting.
FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X that he is praying for the injured officer.
“Praying for the Park Police officer shot in Washington, D.C. The FBI is actively supporting the investigation alongside our law enforcement partners and will bring those responsible to justice,” Patel wrote.
