Christopher Kennedy anticipated a swift and uneventful X-ray visit ahead of his routine surgery. Little did he know, this would lead to a startling discovery as a technician noticed scarring on his lungs.
At 68, Kennedy, a former Air Force technician, was caught off guard by the diagnosis. He had shown no symptoms, living an active life filled with regular exercise, landscaping his garden, and training Bernese Mountain dogs to serve as therapy animals in hospitals.
After undergoing multiple tests, Kennedy received a sobering diagnosis from his pulmonologist: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). As explained by Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos, a representative for the American Lung Association and a Johns Hopkins pulmonologist, though not involved in Kennedy’s care, IPF is a mystifying illness where scar tissue develops in the lungs, hampering oxygen flow to the bloodstream. This progressive disease, noted for its severe mortality rate, remains without an identifiable cause.
Initially, Kennedy believed he could overcome the disease. Yet, as his lung functionality continued to decline, this notion proved overly optimistic. The medications intended to slow the fibrosis were ineffective, and routine activities demanded supplemental oxygen. In 2024, Dr. Aman Pande from the Cleveland Clinic delivered a grim prognosis: Kennedy had less than one year left to live.

Reflecting on life’s unpredictability, Kennedy shared, “We all wonder, as human beings, how we’re going to go. And you never know. It’s a great mystery. Well, for the first time in my life, I was told ‘This is how you’re going to go.'”
“You come out one of two ways”
Pande did have one option for Kennedy: They could see if he was eligible for a double-lung transplant. Kennedy, at 74, was older than most patients who undergo the operation, but he was otherwise a promising candidate, Pande said. Lung transplants are usually the final option offered to IPF patients, Pande said, and are usually curative, though a small percentage of patients can see the condition recur.
Kennedy was initially resistant to the idea, because his younger brother had died after the same procedure. But after more convincing from Pande, he agreed to undergo testing to see if he would be eligible. Cleveland Clinic doctors “scoured everything,” Kennedy said. Finally, he was approved as a candidate. He was registered on the national transplant list, and waited for a pair of suitable lungs to become available.
As the months passed, Kennedy’s lung function continued to degrade. He went from using two liters of oxygen a day to 10. He had a mild case of COVID-19. He lost more than 40 pounds. In October 2024, he was admitted to the hospital.
“Dr. (Jason) Turowski, (a transplant pulmonologist at Cleveland Clinic) said ‘OK, we’re going to admit you and you come out one of two ways: With a set of lungs, or we’re going to carry you out,'” Kennedy recalled.

“You’re reminded every breath matters”
Kennedy spent a month in the hospital. There were two false alarms, where it seemed that a pair of lungs might be available but ultimately were not. The third time was the charm, and on Nov. 15, Kennedy underwent a double-lung transplant.
“It was a relief. I was apprehensive, obviously, and anxious. I can remember going into the operating room,” Kennedy said. “I can remember the flurry of activity, all the people that were in there getting me ready for the surgery. Next thing you know, you’re in your room.”
Just hours after the surgery, Kennedy’s lung capacity was already better than it had been in months. He had several setbacks, including a post-surgery infection and a stroke, but his “indomitable spirit” has helped him recover, said pulmonologist Rachel Powers, who has been part of Kennedy’s post-transplant care team.

“I’m very proud of him. He really has kept a very good perspective of his course of recovery,” Powers said. “He’s kept such a good outlook, and I think that’s been really important for some of the things that he’s had to overcome after transplant.”
For Kennedy, now 75, life is now beginning to feel normal again. Tests show that his lung capacity is at 98%. He is back to spending time with his wife, children and grandkids. He is able to exercise at home and was recently able to take his dog for a walk without losing his breath. He’s almost done training the canine, a Bernese Mountain dog named Fini, to be a hospital therapy dog.
Kennedy had believed Fini would be the last therapy dog he trained, and named him after the retirement flights conducted by Air Force members. But in a few weeks, he’ll be getting a new puppy. He plans to name her Encore to celebrate his own second chance. Training hospital therapy dogs has become even more meaningful after his own medical journey, he said.
“There’s a lot of things that are different in my life. It gives you great perspective and proportion of life, of what’s important and what isn’t,” Kennedy said. “You take every breath for granted, because, you know, why would you not? But as soon as they become compromised, you’re reminded every breath matters. It keeps you centered.”

Central Role of ‘Front Agents’ in New Unlawful Migration Crackdown Revealed
Australia’s watchdog for migration agents has pledged to cleanse the profession by eliminating unlicensed “fake agents” following instances of illegal immigration assistance.
In a decisive move described by the government as part of an “ongoing crackdown,” the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) has imposed sanctions on three registered migration agents.
Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs, Julian Hill, emphasized the government’s commitment to bolstering oversight of immigration practices.
“When individuals pay for the services of a migration agent, they rightly anticipate that a skilled, certified professional will handle the work, not an inexperienced, unauthorized impostor,” Hill stated in an official release on Tuesday.
“Nobody would tolerate the misuse of registration numbers by doctors, lawyers, or financial planners, and the same principle should apply when engaging a registered migration agent.”
The three cases form part of a broader regulatory push by OMARA.
OMARA’s monitoring team was established in October and “proactively monitored” 85 registered migration agents during 2025-26, identifying 43 instances of non-compliance and addressing them through education, engagement and regulatory action, according to the government statement.
“Alongside the Investigations team, which examines allegations of serious misconduct, OMARA sanctioned 28 registered migration agents in 2025-26,” it added.
‘Front agents’
In three separate cases, registered migration agents permitted unregistered individuals to provide migration assistance under the agents’ Migration Agent Registration Numbers (MARNs), a practice commonly referred to as “front agent” activity.
In the first case, an agent’s registration was cancelled after OMARA determined that hundreds of visa applications submitted through three business ImmiAccounts involved either undisclosed immigration assistance or assistance provided by staff who were not registered migration agents.
ImmiAccount is the Department of Home Affairs’ online portal for lodging and managing visa and citizenship applications.
In the second case, an agent was suspended after acknowledging that his son, who was not a registered migration agent, had provided immigration assistance on the business’s behalf.
The investigation also uncovered allegations that clients had received falsified departmental correspondence intended to give the impression that visa applications had been lodged when they had not.
In the third matter, an agent was suspended after knowingly permitting another business director to lodge visa applications using the agent’s MARN while the director worked towards becoming a registered migration agent.
The government said it has strengthened OMARA’s regulatory capability, with the regulator now using both investigations and proactive monitoring to improve compliance and professional standards.
OMARA said in the release that bad actors will be identified and “removed from the profession”.
“While the vast majority of RMAs [registered migration agent] act with integrity and professionalism, there is a small cohort who intentionally seek to undermine the migration program for personal gain,” it said.
“These actors bring the migration advice profession into disrepute and tarnish the reputation of those RMAs who do the right thing in the best interests of their clients.”
Only registered migration agents, Australian legal practitioners and exempt persons can lawfully provide immigration assistance in Australia.
Consumers can check whether an agent is registered through the migration agents register.
Palestinian Refugee Family Drowns in Sussex: Tragedy Unfolds
Tragic news from Sussex reveals that the individuals who drowned near the coast were a Palestinian refugee and his family. The tragic incident involved the father, mother, and their daughter.
Hossam El-Khawwas, along with his wife and their eldest daughter, encountered the deadly situation while taking a swim at Shoreham-by-Sea around 3 p.m. yesterday. The sea was turbulent at the time, contributing to the unfortunate outcome.
Meanwhile, their younger daughter has survived the ordeal but is currently in the hospital, battling for her life in critical condition.
Mr. El-Khawwas was identified by the Palestinian Embassy as a refugee from a camp in Lebanon who had sought a new life in the UK.
The family had been on a camping trip along the Shoreham harbour front. They decided to take a swim there yesterday, not foreseeing the danger that lay ahead in the choppy waters.
Eyewitnesses claimed one of the children got tangled in a fishing net, sparking the tragedy. A fisherman is understood to have pulled one of the children out before raising the alarm.
In a tribute to the family today, the Palestinian Forum in Britain mourned the family’s passing.
‘With hearts believing in God’s decree, the Palestinian Forum in Britain mourns Mr Hossam El-Khawwas, his virtuous wife, and their daughter – from the Rashidieh refugee camp in Lebanon – following their drowning in the Sussex area,’ it said.
‘We pray for the recovery of their second daughter, who was transferred to the hospital.’

Footage that emerged this afternoon shows a lifeboat being rocked by heavy waves as it carried out a search operation to find the family – with ambulances and two helicopters also at the scene.
Eyewitness Joe Chrisp, 24, said: ‘One of the local fishermen said it was two adults, two kids.
‘One of the kids apparently got caught in a fishing net.’
Andy Burnham sent his ‘best wishes and love’ to the relatives and friends of the girl fighting for her life – and reminded people of the ‘dangers of open water swimming’.
Asked during a visit to the North East if the Government needed to do more to tackle water safety, the Prime Minister replied: ‘Always. It’s so sad to hear what happened yesterday, and obviously we think there’s a young girl still in the hospital fighting for her life, and we send our best wishes and love to wider friends and family.
‘The thing I can say today, and there is still, I think, a further heatwave to come in this summer period, is just to remind people about the dangers of open water swimming.
‘The coldness, even when it feels hot outside, can shock people, and that can cause the difficulties. So people just need to remember that at all times.’
Mr Burnham added: ‘I do need to praise the emergency services, who I know were on scene very quickly yesterday. They’ve had a busy summer, but they were there, and we thank them. As I say, just huge sympathy to the friends and the family.’
Chief Superintendent James Collis confirmed at a press conference last night that the coastguard is not searching for anyone else.
Sussex Police said: ‘Tragically, despite the best efforts of paramedics, three people, a man, a woman, and a teenage girl, were sadly confirmed deceased.
‘A younger girl has been taken to hospital and is in critical condition. We can confirm, all four people were from the same family, and their next of kin have been informed.
‘Specialist officers are supporting them at this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts are with their family and friends.’

An investigation has been launched to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
‘At this point, we believe all four entered the water from the land for a swim, and sadly, got into difficulty,’ the force added.
Pictures from the Shoreham seaside showed a huge emergency service response to the incident as eight ambulances parked on the shore beside helicopters.
They remained at the scene, around a 20-minute drive from Brighton, for hours after their 3pm arrival. A police cordon was eventually removed shortly before 9pm.
Road closures had been put in place nearby with the A259 Brighton Road, which runs alongside the beach, blocked in both directions from New Road to Kingston Lane.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘I heard from friends in the Coastguard that it was a family who had been living in tents by the harbour front.
‘They were camping just between the harbour arm and the fort. They have been there a couple of weeks, I’ve walked my dog past them. People don’t usually camp there.’
Joss Loader, who lives nearby and represents Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association on Adur District Council, said: ‘There’s just a really strong sense of shock, obviously people are really concerned for the young girl.
‘A small tightly knit community with a very deep sense of shock and that sense of disbelief you get after a tragedy because it has come out of nowhere.
‘It’s school holidays and we have had a wonderful summer so the beaches have been packed with families.
‘People swim from those beaches even in the winter, generally it is considered as safe as the sea can be. You wouldn’t be swimming there and think you were taking a risk.’
Anna Peacock, 81, who lives near Kingston Beach across the water from Shoreham Fort, said emergency services were on the scene very quickly.

‘It was terribly sad to know that just across the road people have lost their lives,’ she said. ‘People come down to swim, particularly in the summertime and I don’t think they realise there’s a riptide along here.’
Gary and Victoria Flint took their children to the beach for the day. Victoria, from Horsham, said: ‘We arrived at about three and soon after we heard the siren for the lifeboat.
‘We watched it launch then about 20 minutes later, it came back. Ambulances started arriving – more and more of them – then the air ambulances started.’
Another witness told ITV News: ‘I was up near the Coastguard tower when I saw two police officers come past me holding evidence bags after they looked to be going through belongings of, presumably, those who were involved in the incident.’
Alan Facer, 41, a fisherman from Hove, said the water would have been rough when the family got into trouble.
He said: ‘The wind earlier was south-westerly so usually the waves pick up quite a bit. At 3pm, the tide would have been quite high.’
MP for East Worthing and Shoreham Tom Rutland meanwhile described the incident as a ‘tragedy’, adding: ‘I am deeply saddened by the tragic news that three people have died following an incident in the water near Shoreham Fort this afternoon.
‘I spoke earlier with Sussex Police and Shoreham RNLI and have been briefed on the response by the emergency services.
‘My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have lost their lives, and I know the whole community here in Shoreham will be hoping and praying for the recovery of the young girl receiving medical treatment in hospital.’
A spokesman from the RNLI said lifeboat crews were launched at around 2.50pm yesterday afternoon.
Two other lifeboats were also launched from the Brighton lifeboat station shortly after 3pm.
The coastguard, meanwhile, said ‘it responded to an incident reported at Shoreham at about 2.45pm’.
They added: ‘An HM Coastguard helicopter was sent as well as Littlehampton, Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams, and an RNLI lifeboat from Shoreham.’
Former CDC Advisor Reassures: Kindergarten Vaccination Decline Poses No Immediate Threat
The latest findings from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal a minor dip in kindergarten vaccination rates for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Dr. Robert Malone, who once served as vice chair of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), has assured News Media that this decrease is not a cause for alarm.
In a statement released on Monday, the CDC highlighted a slight 0.1% reduction in vaccination coverage among new kindergarten students, accompanied by a rise in parents requesting vaccine exemptions for their children. Despite these figures, Dr. Malone emphasized that the decline is minimal and should not be overemphasized.
“According to the latest data from the CDC, there is a 0.1% decline compared to the previous year in vaccine acceptance among kindergartners. Across various regions of the country, we observe about a 1% variation on average. Nonetheless, this reflects a very minor deviation from the CDC’s advised vaccine schedule,” Dr. Malone, a respected physician and seasoned scientist, commented to News Media.

“Those are the facts,” he continued, “and they are not particularly alarming.”
“Even by the CDC’s own report, we still maintain a very high rate of compliance among kindergartners,” he added.
Malone also criticized the media for its coverage of the data drop.
“The narrative that this represents a clear and compelling signal of parents becoming disaffected with vaccination… whoever’s promoting that kind of messaging, it’s not in the data,” he added.
Malone specifically cited CNBC’s coverage and its mention of an ongoing measles outbreak in the U.S., stressing that the U.S. is not an outlier.
“Media outlets like CNBC have highlighted that we are in the middle of a historic measles outbreak. However, context is critical: this outbreak is not restricted to the United States. It is occurring worldwide, including in Canada and across many nations that have not experienced this level of vaccine controversy or hesitancy,” he told News Media.
He also added that vaccination is still the best protection against contracting measles.

“Regarding the overall picture: measles cases are on the rise globally, and vaccination remains the most effective protection against infection. However, does this new kindergarten data represent a major threat? Absolutely not,” he stated to News Media.
Malone, who was a vocal critic of vaccine mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic, did pin some blame on falling trust in the scientific establishment for the slight downtick in inoculations.
“Does it represent a potential signal that a certain part of the population, very small, is growing in its skepticism of the benefits of childhood vaccination? I would say, yeah, that is that signal,” he told News Media.
Still, despite growing mistrust, vaccination rates remain strong, Malone argued.
“I think we can all agree [there were] failures in accurate communication by the government during COVID. And certainly they’re highlighted in the recent Tony Fauci hearings and the various disclosures coming out of the Senate,” Malone told News Media.

“Despite all of that, despite all the controversy around the potential role, the hypothesized role of childhood vaccine schedules being linked in some way to autism, we still have very robust year-in, year-out uptake of vaccines in kindergarten ages,” Malone told News Media.
“The takeaway is simple: keep calm and carry on. There is nothing in this data to panic about,” Malone concluded.

Daniel Faalele’s brief stint with the Giants has come to an end almost before it began.
In a move confirmed by The Post, Faalele has been traded to the Jaguars in exchange for a late-round pick in the 2027 draft.
Faalele joined the Giants on a one-year deal, reuniting with head coach John Harbaugh from their days with the Ravens. Throughout training camp, he held his position as the second-team left guard.
This trade creates space on the Giants’ 53-man roster, which could mean a lifeline for former first-round pick, Evan Neal.
The team now has three openings available for Neal, along with Aaron Stinnie, Bryan Hudson, and Lucas Patrick.

The Daily Mail has uncovered that Hayden Panettiere had romantic ties to the Hickerson brothers—Brian and Zach—both of whom were reportedly at the scene following her suspected overdose.
The revelation comes amidst new exclusive photos capturing Zach Hickerson, 38, seen publicly for the first time after the tragic and unexpected passing of the actress on Tuesday.
Zach chose not to provide a comment to the Daily Mail when asked, following the emergence of a police report indicating that he, along with his brother Brian, 37—Panettiere’s intermittent partner—were present when she was discovered unresponsive at an Airbnb in Greenville, South Carolina, last Sunday.
The relationship between Panettiere, 36, and realtor Brian was known to be particularly volatile, characterized by numerous incidents of domestic violence over the years.
However, in an exclusive detail revealed by the Daily Mail, it appears that the Heroes star had also been romantically involved with Zach, a pastor, during a period when Brian was incarcerated for an assault on her back in 2019.
The two were seen strolling in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood in September that year, with a witness saying, ‘They looked very comfortable. Like a real couple.’

That might explain why he cut such a haunted figure when the Daily Mail approached him for comment at his home in Greenville, South Carolina.

It was Zach who arrived at the rental property to find Panettiere unresponsive on a living room armchair around 1.30pm, while Brian was asleep in a bedroom, TMZ reported Tuesday.

Both Zach and Brian called 911 when they failed to wake Hayden up. EMS teams ‘worked on her’ for nearly an hour before she was formally declared dead in front of the brothers, according to the police report.
A heavily redacted police report obtained by the Daily Mail shows first responders arrived at the luxury Judson Mill Lofts complex within minutes of a 911 call made by an ‘acquaintance.’
According to the incident summary, Zach was ‘very emotional’ as first responders tried to save mom-of-one Panettiere’s life.
Brian was stoic and did not become ‘visibly emotional’ until after Panettiere was pronounced dead from a suspected cardiac arrest.
He allegedly showed police a ‘bag of medication’ that the actress had been taking at the time of her death, kept inside the apartment complex where she was temporarily staying.
A dispatcher in audio of the emergency call could be heard saying Panettiere had suffered a suspected overdose, and sources told TMZ that Narcan – a nasal medication used to treat an opioid overdose – was also found on a mattress at the property.

A coroner’s report said ‘Panettiere was found unresponsive inside the residence, where she had been temporarily staying’ and had no signs of trauma to her body. A full cause of death remains pending.
The apparent dalliance between Panettiere and Zach took place after Brian was locked up for domestic abuse in 2019. It is unclear when that relationship ended.
Panettiere first began dating the younger Hickerson in 2018, however their on-off relationship became tumultuous as he was arrested several times on domestic violence charges.
But since then, and despite another alleged domestic violence incident in 2020, Brian and Panettiere had been going strong, with the pair laughing at reports that they had split – despite keeping their love low-key.
The duo’s last public sighting was as recently as March, when they were pictured at an LA airport together. At the time, Panettiere was using crutches to walk, insisting she was dealing with pinched nerves in her lower back.
Panettiere is said to have kept their apparent reconciliation under wraps.

Panettiere’s mother broke her silence on her daughter’s death Tuesday and admitted the family had long wanted Brian out of the actress’s life.
Lesley Vogel told NBC News: ‘This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death and that was Brian Hickerson.’
‘I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry – it is a struggle and it’s a very challenging industry and it’s not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path.’
The Daily Mail has also since learned that Brian had filed a petition with the Los Angeles County Superior Court to expunge his criminal record of domestic abuse charges involving the actress, about a month before her untimely death.
According to a minute order filed on August 13 and reviewed by the Daily Mail, Judge Olivia Rosales denied the request just three days before Panettiere’s tragic passing.
Brian was charged in July 2020 with four domestic assault felonies, one misdemeanor count of battery, two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one felony count of dissuading a witness from prosecuting a crime.
The charges covered the period from May 2019 to July 2020.
In April 2021, he accepted a plea deal, pleading no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend.
The remaining six counts were dismissed.
He was sentenced to 45 days in jail and four years’ probation, plus $500 in fines and mandatory domestic violence classes. In May 2021, he surrendered to serve his sentence, spending 13 days behind bars.
Under his probation terms, Brian was ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings ‘at the minimum rate of one per week,’ according to court records; he also had to complete a series of anger management sessions.
In her memoir, titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere alleged that Brian once beat her so severely that she had to remain in her house for weeks to keep her injuries from the public.

She said she tried to keep the alleged abuse from the police because she feared the public would find out, and described her relationship as a ‘very dark and complicated time in my life.’
In one incident, Brian was arrested in May 2019, and court records show he was charged with one count of injuring a spouse or girlfriend.
Panettiere’s relationship with Brian appeared to end in 2020, and in July of that year she filed for a restraining order against him. The outcome of her request is not stated in court records.
Panettiere also spoke about giving up custody of her daughter while struggling with addiction in one of her final interviews before her death.
While battling substance addiction issues, in 2018 the actress made the decision to sign over custody of her daughter to Klitschko, who was not living in the same country as Panettiere at the time.
She said, ‘It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make.’
Brian is yet to comment on Panettiere’s death but Wladimir Klitschko – the actress’s former fiancé and the father of her daughter Kaya – paid an emotional tribute to his ex early on Tuesday morning.
In a statement posted to Instagram, the 50-year-old former boxer wrote: ‘Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief.
‘The announcement of Hayden’s tragic death saddens me deeply. She left this world far too soon. Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya.
‘She built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry. Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives.’
Klitschko continued: ‘To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.
‘I extend my deepest condolences to Hayden’s parents, her friends, and her fans, who are also grieving today. Young and talented people like Hayden should not leave this world so soon.
‘I ask everyone to please respect our family’s feelings and privacy during this incredibly difficult time. For now, this is all I wish to say.
‘Thank you to everyone who is supporting my family and expressing their sincere condolences. Rest easy, Hayden. May you find eternal peace. #WeLoveYouHayden.’
