OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has outlined two scenarios in which artificial intelligence could end “very badly,” renewing his call for a more measured approach to the technology’s breakneck development.

Altman, whose company created ChatGPT, detailed his fears in a post on X late Sunday, days after a stark warning from an AI whistleblower heightened scrutiny around the industry.

“There are two ways AI could go very badly and that we must avoid,” Altman wrote.

The first, he said, would be humanity losing control over where AI development ultimately leads — an outcome he described as unacceptable.

“We are unapologetically on Team Humanity and AI must always serve people,” Altman said. He argued that AI alignment and safety measures must advance faster than the growing capabilities of increasingly powerful models.

His second major concern centers on the concentration of power in the hands of too few people or organizations.

Altman warned that an extraordinarily powerful AI controlled by a single individual or company could be used to force that group’s worldview on everyone else, creating what he said could be an “extremely dystopian” future.

Citing those risks, the OpenAI CEO said he is working alongside other technology leaders to slow the pace of AI progress as the sector continues to evolve rapidly.

‘When we talk about “pacing,” we don’t mean “stopping,”‘ he shared in an earlier post.

‘Progress has been rapid and will continue to be. But it should be slower than it otherwise could be,’ he said, noting that safety issues could come with serious costs.

‘Pacing will be well worth the cost,’ Altman then argued. ‘No amount of American competitive pressure should justify recklessness, or let capabilities get ahead of alignment and monitoring.’

‘The world deserves confidence that American companies developing increasingly capable AI will act responsibly, especially as the trajectory of progress has steepened,’ he added.

‘Every frontier lab must deliver on this, and there is no reason any of us should come to work if we cannot.’ 

Altman’s plea comes after the resignation of whistleblower Jacob Coxon, who said that AI is posing an existential threat to humanity as he stepped away from his role with AI firm Anthropic.

Coxon announced his departure in a social media post on Tuesday and warned that companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are not ‘acting responsibly.’

‘I resigned from Anthropic today,’ he wrote on X. ‘I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. 

‘Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.’

Superintelligence is the point at which an artificial system becomes more powerful than any individual, company or even nation.

Coxon continued to plead with the public on X. ‘Do not underestimate the power of this technology,’ he wrote. 

‘These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. 

‘We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.

‘The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt.’

He claimed that while executives and senior researchers ‘couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible,’ they are privately expressing similar concerns.

Geoffrey Hinton, a Canadian researcher often referred to as the ‘Godfather of AI’ – has similarly warned that super-intelligent systems could ‘lead to human extinction.’

‘We would be very foolish to develop superintelligence now, when there is no scientific consensus it can be developed safely and controllably,’ Dr Hinton said.

‘Losing control over AI smarter than ourselves could be catastrophic and could even lead to human extinction.’

Indonesian authorities ramped up their search Monday for 129 people still missing after a ferry capsized in severe weather in the Java Sea, an accident that has left at least six passengers dead.

The Virgo Transport 8 had more than 240 people aboard when its captain sent a distress signal reporting that the vessel was listing in rough seas. The ferry was traveling from Surabaya, in East Java province, to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan on Borneo Island, amid waves reaching up to 10 feet.

Authorities lost contact with the ferry at about 2 a.m. Sunday. Roughly two hours later, they received reports that the ship had overturned in the Masalembo waters of the Java Sea, around 92 miles from Banjarmasin.

Video released Sunday by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency showed the overturned ferry adrift in choppy waters as helicopters scanned the area.

Divers deployed with underwater drones

A major rescue operation was underway Monday, with 17 ships and aircraft and about 655 personnel from the military, police and other agencies deployed to search for survivors, National Search and Rescue Agency chief Mohammad Syafii said.

Officials also sent specialized underwater search teams and navy-operated thermal drones below the surface in an effort to expand the search and accelerate the recovery and evacuation of victims, Syafii said.

“We remain hopeful of finding more survivors,” Syafii said during a video briefing.

Rescuers, aided by tugboats and other vessels passing through the area, saved 108 people on Sunday and recovered six bodies.

According to the ferry’s manifest, 243 people were on board: 213 passengers and 30 crew members. Authorities noted, however, that passenger totals in Indonesia can differ from official manifests.

The 390-foot ferry, built in Japan in 1987, was also carrying 89 vehicles when it overturned.

Authorities have not determined the cause of the accident.

Survivors recount harrowing moments as ferry overturns

A survivor, Ahmad Saudi, said the ferry appeared overcrowded, with many passengers forced to sleep in hallways and common areas because the cabins were full.

Saudi, a bus driver traveling with a vehicle he was transporting, recalled how the ferry suddenly listed without warning, triggering panic among passengers as rough seas battered the vessel in the Java Sea.

Passengers initially tried to hold on before scrambling to the higher side of the ship as it tilted further, he said, speculating the ferry’s balance may have been affected by trucks loaded on one side.

“The women staying in the economy-class cabins likely didn’t survive because the ferry listed so quickly,” Saudi said.

“There were no alarms or announcements warning passengers about what was happening, many people in the cabins may not have had enough time to get out.”

Faisal, another survivor who goes by one name, said he and 14 other passengers clung to a section of the overturned ferry that remained above water after it capsized.

“After the ship listed, people panicked and rushed to the upper deck, but eventually the ferry rolled over completely,” he said. “Fourteen of us were left stranded there.”

The group repeatedly recited the Islamic call to prayer, or adhan, while battling exhaustion and rough seas as awaiting rescue.

A wave later swept Faisal toward a lifeboat, helping him survive, he said.

Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.

Ferries are a common method of travel and accidents occur regularly, in part due to weak enforcement of safety standards.

WAUSAU, Wis. — Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany said he swam to safety after the small plane he was aboard made an emergency landing in a lake late Saturday.

Tiffany said he was flying back from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when the aircraft lost power while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot brought the plane down in Lake Wausau, and both men ended up in the water before swimming to safety.

“After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat,” Tiffany wrote on X.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office said the emergency landing occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday. Tiffany and pilot Leonard Boltz got out of the aircraft and called 911. Fire department responders reached them in an airboat just after 9 p.m., authorities said.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital, treated for minor injuries and released. Tiffany’s campaign said in an emailed statement that he received stitches for a cut above his right eye.

Authorities placed a no-wake buoy near the aircraft, which remained in the lake, and asked boaters to stay clear until it can be removed. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson said the agency will investigate. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is awaiting the FAA’s assessment of whether the plane sustained substantial damage that would warrant NTSB involvement.

Tiffany is seeking Wisconsin’s governorship as a Republican and has received an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

Democratic candidate David Crowley wished Tiffany a “quick recovery” in an X post and praised the “heroism of the pilot.”

The aircraft carrying Tiffany was a single-engine, four-seat Beechcraft Bonanza.
