As pressure mounted on Kimberly Guilfoyle’s tenure in Athens, she reportedly made a series of urgent calls seeking support to preserve her ambassadorship.

According to two sources, three influential figures were among those she contacted: Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey; Secretary of War Pete Hegseth; and Rupert Murdoch, Fox News chairman emeritus and owner of The Wall Street Journal.

The former US ambassador to Greece reportedly asked Hegseth and Barrack for moral support, as well as for a personal appeal to President Donald Trump on her behalf.

Two sources close to Trump said the president did not return her calls.

Guilfoyle, 57, was seeking help after the Daily Mail exclusively reported that the State Department had opened an investigation into allegations that she oversaw a toxic workplace marked by retaliation.

The inquiry reportedly includes several alleged ethics violations, including claims involving undisclosed funding for residence upgrades and private jet travel. It also follows Wall Street Journal reports alleging that Guilfoyle asked a donor for $100,000 to cover personal credit card debt in exchange for access to the administration before she became ambassador.

Barrack, a billionaire megadonor turned diplomat and one of Trump’s longest-standing political confidants, told her he would provide the support she needed, according to a source.

It remains unclear whether Barrack ultimately took any action on her behalf.

The Daily Mail contacted Barrack for comment, but he did not respond.

In July 2021, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn indicted Barrack on charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for the United Arab Emirates, obstructing justice and making false statements to federal agents. A Brooklyn jury acquitted him on all charges in November 2022.

When approached by the Daily Mail, Guilfoyle’s attorney described Barrack, who is also Trump’s Syria envoy, as a “friend and mentor” to her.

Guilfoyle also told people close to her that she had directly contacted Murdoch, chairman emeritus of Fox Corporation and News Corp, over coverage in articles published by The Wall Street Journal.

She reportedly sought to have the stories removed, but Murdoch did not give in to her requests.

The Journal’s initial report cited text messages in which Guilfoyle pressured a conservative activist in Kentucky to help settle her $100,000 American Express bill in July 2025.

After the Trump administration called for her resignation last week, Guilfoyle left her post. She has denied the accusations, calling them “false,” and vowed to “vigorously defend” her name.

In the days leading up to her resignation, Guilfoyle had also desperately attempted to scrub the Daily Mail’s coverage detailing an unpaid dinner tab and her champagne requests. Sources familiar with the exchange had told the Daily Mail that the dining bill had been sent to the US Embassy.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle had asked if State Department officials could get the story deleted, but when they requested a receipt to prove she had paid out of pocket, she failed to produce one.

Sources now tell the Daily Mail that Guilfoyle reached out to other people close to her with significant social media followings, requesting they post public messages of support for her across platforms such as X and Instagram. Instead, many deleted photos with her.

Meanwhile, Trump has been ruthless in cutting her loose. After her exit, he insisted she ‘wasn’t part of my family,’ adding: ‘I guess she dated my son.’

The put-down glossed over her six-year relationship with Donald Trump Jr, four of which she was his fiancée. The two have been completely estranged since late 2024, when they called off their engagement. 

For Guilfoyle, leaving Greece may not end her troubles. Representative Robert Garcia, ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said on Wednesday that his side will keep investigating Guilfoyle even though she is now a private citizen.

‘This is the latest in a long list of corruption surrounding the Trump Administration, and we’re demanding answers,’ he said.

But in Athens, her grip on power has been severed, and two sources familiar with the matter say she has been given until the end of the month to move out of the embassy.

‘The people in the embassy are no longer afraid of her. Nobody is listening to her or taking her orders anymore,’ a source in Greece told the Daily Mail. ‘She is all alone in that house, screaming at her old staff that they are leakers, and waiting to get kicked out. It’s an insane situation.’

Three sources say she is considering staying in Europe rather than returning to the US.

And her former admirers seem to have vanished. 

‘All these people who were totally entranced by her and ignored the writing on the wall have now wiped photos with her, gone radio silent and claim they never wanted anything to do with her,’ a source close to Guilfoyle said. ‘It’s pathetic.’

The Daily Mail reached out to Guilfoyle, the State Department, the White House, the Department of Defense and Fox Corporation for comment. 

The man fatally shot on a New York City subway platform over the weekend has been identified as a 26-year-old Bronx resident.

Darell Rodriguez was shot once in the chest at about 12:20 p.m. Saturday inside the 53rd Street/7th Avenue station in Midtown Manhattan, according to the NYPD. The gunman, who has not been identified, fled after the shooting.

Sources said Rodriguez was likely on his way home after working as a security guard at the front desk of a Manhattan building.

He was waiting for a northbound E train bound for University Heights in the Bronx when the attacker walked up to him, pulled out a gun and fired, police sources told The Post.

The two men had some type of confrontation on the platform, though the circumstances surrounding the dispute remained unclear, NYPD Deputy Chief Keith Shine said Sunday.

After the shooting, the suspect exited the station and headed north on 7th Avenue. He remains at large, police said.

The suspect was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, black vest and face mask. He was also carrying a backpack.

Police have not determined whether the suspect and Rodriguez knew each other, but officials said the shooting appeared to be targeted.

Rodriguez was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m., according to police.

The killing is the seventh murder reported in New York City’s transit system this year and the fourth involving a gun. NYPD statistics show there were two gun-related transit deaths during the same period in 2025.

American Airlines has ended service to three destinations in the United States, Mexico and the Middle East, reducing the number of nonstop flight options available to travelers as it continues to reshape its network.

The carrier has dropped routes serving Santa Maria, California; Tijuana, Mexico; and Doha, Qatar. The decisions reflect a combination of weak route performance, fleet and operational changes, and shifting passenger demand.

The cuts leave Santa Maria without service from a major US legacy airline. They also mean Tijuana no longer has a nonstop connection to the United States operated by a US carrier.

American’s Santa Maria service, operated under the American Eagle brand by regional partner SkyWest Airlines, ended May 7 after failing to meet performance targets.

‘Unfortunately, flights to SMX did not meet performance expectations, and SkyWest informed American it will discontinue service as of May 7,’ an American Airlines spokesperson told local outlet KEYT earlier this year.

Santa Maria Airport is now served commercially only by Allegiant Air, which offers flights to Las Vegas.

American also ended its Phoenix–Tijuana route in August after passenger demand fell short of the airline’s expectations.

Introduced in 2024, the route had been the only nonstop link between Tijuana and the US operated by an American airline.

Travelers can still get to the Mexican city through other airlines or connecting itineraries. Passengers living near the border may also consider departing from San Diego, provided they have the required documents and enough time to cross into the United States.

Derek Cann, vice president of marketing at travel booking platform Going, said airlines look at far more than the number of seats sold when evaluating a route.

‘A full plane doesn’t tell the whole story,’ he said, noting that airlines compare ticket revenue with operating expenses and assess whether a route delivers connecting passengers to other parts of their network.

For instance, a flight from a smaller market to a major hub can create additional revenue by linking passengers with destinations throughout the country and overseas.

Carriers also weigh seasonal travel patterns, competing services, future bookings and the potential to use aircraft and crews on other routes.

On international long-haul flights, premium-cabin demand and cargo earnings can play an especially significant role because they often produce better margins than standard economy fares.

The third route reduction affects passengers traveling between Philadelphia and Doha, Qatar.

American permanently ended the service in June after previously suspending flights because of regional hostilities. The airline said the decision was part of an effort to optimize its network and fleet.

The route had been one of Philadelphia International Airport’s longest nonstop services, covering around 6,800 miles and taking approximately 14 hours and 30 minutes.

American Airlines didn’t immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.

However, passengers have not lost the nonstop connection entirely. Qatar Airways resumed service between Philadelphia and Doha on August 1 and is now the sole operator on the route.

Cann said the circumstances surrounding Doha differ from those affecting the other destinations, as regional uncertainty can influence passengers’ willingness to book, operating conditions and an airline’s confidence in maintaining a consistent schedule.

Without access to American’s internal financial data, he cautioned against assuming the three route cuts were all made for the same reason.

American is cutting some routes while investing in others. Its announced 2027 additions include flights from Philadelphia to Porto, Vienna and Reykjavik, alongside Chicago to Tokyo Narita, Charlotte to Barcelona, and New York JFK to Amsterdam and Nice.

The airline also plans to add a fourth daily flight between JFK and London Heathrow.

Cann said the expansion points to a redistribution of flights across American’s network, although there is no evidence that the aircraft or money freed up by these specific cuts will be directed toward those new routes.

For travelers, that means more options in some markets can coincide with fewer convenient flights in others.

The impact can extend beyond the loss of a direct flight. Passengers may face longer drives to alternative airports, extra transportation costs, additional connections or more time away from work.

Losing access to a major hub can also affect people traveling to other destinations. Someone may never have planned to visit Phoenix, for example, but the route could have been their link to family or work elsewhere.

Fewer competing flights can put upward pressure on fares, although higher prices are not inevitable on every route.

‘The practical question is how many realistic alternatives remain – and what they cost in both money and time,’ Cann said.

For passengers whose bookings are affected by airline schedule changes, Cann advised checking replacement flights carefully, including departure and arrival airports, connection times and cabin arrangements.

Travelers should also investigate partner-airline options and compare the cost of alternative travel before accepting a refund. If a flight was booked with miles, he advised contacting the loyalty program that issued the ticket before canceling, as award availability and mileage prices can change.

American’s partnership with Qatar Airways is particularly relevant to passengers flying between Philadelphia and Doha.

Although American no longer operates the route itself, travelers can still book Qatar Airways flights, and eligible tickets can earn American Airlines AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points. AAdvantage miles can also be redeemed for Qatar flights when partner award seats are available.

Earning rates and benefits depend on the ticket, including which airline markets the flight, so passengers should check the conditions before booking. An American flight number does not necessarily mean an American aircraft will operate the journey.

Passengers whose flights are canceled or significantly changed may also be entitled to refunds under US Department of Transportation rules.

For flights to, from or within the US, travelers are generally entitled to a refund to their original form of payment if an airline cancels their flight or makes a significant change and they decline replacement travel or other compensation. They do not have to accept a voucher instead of a required refund.

American routinely reviews its routes to determine where its aircraft can be deployed most effectively, as airlines weigh passenger demand against the cost of operating each service.

The latest cuts do not mean American is withdrawing from California, Mexico or the Middle East altogether, but travelers who relied on the discontinued routes may now need to consider other carriers, nearby airports or alternative connections.

President Trump called on France Monday to close its borders to the rest of Europe after a weekend of unrest that resulted in at least 2,400 arrests and left major cities grappling with widespread disorder.

“The migrants have taken over France,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They must CLOSE THE BORDERS, FAST!”

The demonstrations, initially linked to frustration over education and the rising cost of living, were marked by clashes involving far-left activists and second-generation immigrant youths. Luxury retailers and other businesses were looted in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Lille and elsewhere.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said Monday that he had directed city prefects to introduce “very limited” and “localized” curfews. He also defended police against criticism that officers had lost control of the streets.

“On Saturday, despite scenes of severe violence and extensive property damage, no one was killed, and that is a miracle,” Lecornu said. He added that further details about the curfews would be announced later Monday.

In Marseille, a port city with a large North African immigrant population, the prefect prohibited protests and other gatherings from noon until 8 p.m. local time Monday.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered his resignation Sunday, but President Emmanuel Macron asked him to remain in office “given the need for continued command of law enforcement in the current context.” A statement from the Elysee Palace also directed Nuñez to “ensure full transparency about the failures in planning and intelligence-gathering that led to the violence.”

“I submitted my resignation because I am responsible for everything that is happening,” Nuñez told France Inter radio. “The real issue is ensuring that this doesn’t happen again … We obviously need to be better at anticipating the kind of mobilization that is unfolding.”

Unlike Lecornu, Nuñez acknowledged that authorities had “obviously” lost control “in some of these major cities.” He said officials could not face shopkeepers whose businesses had been looted and claim that was not the case.

France and 28 other European countries belong to the Schengen Area, where people can move freely among participating nations and identity checks are not routinely conducted on arrivals from those countries.

U.S. lawmakers are expressing growing concern over the violence unfolding in Albania, a small NATO member where police have clashed with protesters in the capital, Tirana.

The unrest entered its sixth consecutive day Sunday, prompting members of Congress to issue warnings to Albanian authorities on social media.

“The Albanian people deserve freedom, rule of law, and institutional accountability. The government must refrain from all violence against protestors. Young people deserve a voice in the future of their country,” Republican South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson wrote on X.

Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., also called for restraint, writing on X: “All parties must reject violence, and the government must respect the rights of peaceful protesters. Albania’s young people deserve a voice in shaping their nation’s future.” Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, joined Wilson and Aderholt in criticizing the unrest, saying: “The protests in Albania are a culmination of the people’s distrust of corrupt politicians and fatigue over the total disregard for the rule of law.”

Police said 388 people had been charged with criminal offenses during the demonstrations. An unspecified number of protesters and police officers were also injured, according to Reuters.

The U.S. Embassy in Albania urged demonstrators to exercise their right to peaceful protest and avoid violent rioting, while calling for restraint and calm from all sides.

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets amid accusations of government corruption, poor education, unemployment and limited opportunities. Led by students and joined by citizens nationwide, the movement is demanding accountability, an end to corruption, and what protesters describe as the restoration of democratic institutions and the rule of law.

The student-led protests began in Tirana but quickly spread across Albania as demonstrations turned violent. Protesters have thrown rocks at police, set government buildings on fire, broken shop windows and damaged private property. They are calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation, while police have responded with rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas.

Rama has characterized the demonstrations as a threat to Albania’s European aspirations as the country continues its uncertain pursuit of European Union membership.

On Monday, Rama blamed outside forces for the violence, according to Reuters. “They are young men and women who have been ideologized and radicalized under the pressure or inspiration of that dark and new force that has emerged in Europe and the United States, which the President of the United States has designated a terrorist organization: ANTIFA.”

In a Facebook post translated by Reuters on Friday, Rama wrote: “These are also foreign hands that do not wish for Albania to be at peace; they do not want Albania to see clearly, to move forward, or to focus daily on addressing its own challenges for the sake of improvement. They do not want Albania to be part of the united European family — a place where it could finally, once and for all, escape these hands and the yoke of a forced choice.”

Agim Nesho, a former Albanian ambassador to the United States and the United Nations, told News Media that Rama’s attempt to link Albania’s unrest to protests in France, Italy and other parts of Europe ignores the specific political grievances driving the demonstrations.

Nesho said Albania’s path toward Europe should not be conflated with the political survival of Rama or any individual government.

“European integration is supposed to reinforce democracy, judicial independence, transparent governance, and fundamental freedoms — not provide political protection from public accountability. Brussels has a responsibility to examine allegations of police abuses independently, uphold the rights of peaceful demonstrators, and take seriously the grievances behind this national movement,” Nesho added.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood condemned the violence reported in Albania.

“We condemn the use of violence in Tirana and other cities in Albania, including arson, attacks on State institutions and the destruction of public and private property. Violence has no place in a democratic society, and the response to it must remain within the law and proportionate,” the Commission said.

The Commission noted the important gains Albania has made toward EU membership, reminded Albanians that grievances should be handled through constructive dialogue and in a peaceful manner.

The turmoil in Albania comes as the country has long sought European Union membership, which began in 2014 when it became an official candidate for accession. While the 2025 annual European Commission report stated that Albania made significant strides in judicial reforms and combating organized crime, the continued allegations of corruption in the Rama government and the current violence taking place will complicate its path to EU membership.
