South Korea Boosts Military Readiness Amid Trump’s Cut to Joint Exercises

0

In a bold call for enhanced military autonomy, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged his country to strengthen its independent defense systems. This appeal came Tuesday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s directive to slash the U.S. role in joint military exercises with South Korea.

President Lee delivered his remarks during a cabinet meeting following the commencement of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises. Trump made headlines over the weekend with a social media announcement stating that War Secretary Pete Hegseth had been tasked with “substantially reducing” American participation in the drills.

Expressing concerns, Trump suggested that the nature of the exercises might appear overly confrontational to North Korea—a nation led by Kim Jong Un, with whom Trump has sought to maintain a warm rapport.

President Lee reiterated during his cabinet session that the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills are purely defensive in nature, emphasizing their importance in maintaining regional stability.

“A strong alliance makes the foundation of security stronger, and strengthening our own capabilities increases our value and necessity as an ally,” Lee said.

He stated that South Korea’s top priority is maintaining peace with North Korea, but said the country must be prepared for a “worst-case scenario.”

Lee specifically mentioned boosting South Korea’s nuclear-powered submarine program, among others.

Trump’s statement on Monday, posted to Truth Social, was openly critical of Lee’s administration with respect to North Korea.

“Based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, of North Korea, I am not happy with the fact that the United States has, long ago, agreed to participate in Joint Military Exercises with South Korea,” Trump wrote.

“These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a Country that, as long as Donald J. Trump has been President, has been unthreatening and respectful.”

Lee’s administration noted the kind words for North Korea in his statement on Tuesday, with Lee’s national security advisor, Wi Sung-lac, remarking that he hopes Trump’s relationship with Kim could lead to lasting change.

“We hope the friendly relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders will lead to meaningful North Korea-U.S. dialogue,” Wi said at a Tuesday briefing.

Trump also took the opportunity to highlight Lee’s apparent refusal to assist the U.S. in the conflict with Iran.

“While somewhat unrelated (?), I recently asked the President of South Korea if they would like to join us in the Denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they said, ‘No thanks!’” Trump wrote.

Padres Coach Oswaldo Pirela Detained by ICE at Airport

0

A coach from the San Diego Padres’ minor league system finds himself entangled in a legal ordeal, now in federal immigration custody following an unexpected detention during a routine airport transit. The incident has grabbed attention as Oswaldo José Pirela, the team’s minor-league catching coordinator, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

The detention occurred on Sunday morning at the El Paso International Airport, a source close to his family revealed. As of Tuesday morning, Pirela was still reported to be held at the El Paso Processing Center, according to an ICE detainee database where his name features prominently.

While confirmation of Pirela’s detention has been obtained from the Padres organization, they have remained tight-lipped regarding the details surrounding his arrest, citing ongoing efforts to understand the circumstances fully.

“We recently became aware of the detainment of minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela in El Paso, Texas,” an official statement from the team clarified. “We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time.”

Pirela, aged 34, was in El Paso carrying out responsibilities tied to the Padres’ player development, preparing to head back to Arizona, where he resides with his wife and their two daughters, who are American citizens. Notably, El Paso is home to the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, the Chihuahuas, forming a critical component of their player development pipeline.

Exactly what prompted the detention remains unclear.

Pirela’s relatives say he came to the United States from Venezuela in 2014, applied for asylum and has a pending case. His family also says he has authorization to work in the country, though The Athletic reported that Pirela was not carrying his physical work-permit card when he was detained. ICE had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for why he remained in custody.

“He did everything lawfully as the U.S. asks,” sister Daniela Pirela told NBC News. “He loves this country.”

His brother, Jorge, said the family left Venezuela after experiencing political persecution and pursued asylum through the established process. In an Instagram post appealing for his brother’s release, Jorge described Pirela as a devoted father, dedicated coach and respected member of the communities in which he has worked.

Pirela has spent much of his adult life in baseball. He played in the Texas Rangers’ minor-league system from 2009-11 before eventually transitioning into coaching. He joined the Padres organization in 2024 and now works throughout their player-development system as a catching coordinator.

For now, the Padres are gathering information while Pirela’s family seeks legal assistance and waits for clarity on why a routine work trip ended with him in federal custody.

11-Year-Old Accidentally Crashes Car into 7-Eleven During Driving Incident with Parent’s Permission

In a startling incident in Florida, a mother is accused of letting her 11-year-old daughter take the driver’s seat to make a trip to a local 7-Eleven. Unfortunately, the young driver mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, resulting in a crash.

Carribean Myers, aged 41, now faces charges of child abuse and allowing a minor without a license to drive. This information comes from a report by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, when deputies arrived at the 7-Eleven on Gordon Road in Riverview. The young driver had crashed into a concrete barrier before hitting the building. Confusing the brake for the accelerator seemed to be the cause of the collision, authorities reported.

Footage from a body camera revealed the car’s front bumper dangling from the vehicle, with evident damage to the storefront as well. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the aftermath of the crash, deputies confirmed.

Myers allegedly had the girl, who has autism, drive to the store from their home about 1 mile away because Myers’ license was suspended.

Cops say her driver’s license had been suspended for about two months and she has had her underage children drive her around ever since.

While everyone came out unscathed, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said it could have been a lot worse.

“Putting an 11-year-old behind the wheel is reckless and could have ended in tragedy,” Chronister said in a statement. “This mother made a dangerous decision that put her child and everyone around them at risk. Parents have a responsibility to protect their children, not place them in situations that could get them or someone else seriously hurt. We will hold anyone accountable who puts a child in danger.”

Body camera video showed deputies arresting Myers and placing her into the back of a patrol car.

Deputies took her to the Hillsborough County Jail, where she is being held without bond. Her next court date is not listed.

UFO Scientist Alleges US Government Conceals Bodies of Four Alien Species

0

A scientist who has been at the forefront of the Pentagon’s UFO investigations for many years, claims to have evidence that the United States is concealing the remains of four distinct alien species after their crafts crashed on Earth.

Dr. Eric Davis, an astrophysicist with expertise in advanced aerospace propulsion, revealed he has personally reviewed classified photographs and documents held by the U.S. government. These materials purportedly confirm the discovery of extraterrestrial life forms amidst the wreckages of UFOs.

According to Davis, these findings encompass at least four separate alien species, which the United States currently stores in high-security locations. However, he pointed out that during the Obama Administration, the sites housing these extraterrestrial remains were relocated.

Davis identified the alien species as the Grays, the Nordics, a humanoid-insect species resembling a giant praying mantis, and another called the Reptilians, characterized by their lizard-like, humanoid features.

“We know of at least four different species. I’ve witnessed the evidence and reviewed the records,” Davis confidently asserted to NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich.

He compared the Grays to the aliens seen in the science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a small, gray-skinned humanoid with large heads and black eyes.

Meanwhile, the Nordics were described as looking like extremely tall Scandinavians with blonde hair and the most human-like features of all the alleged alien races.

Despite Davis’s public claims and the ongoing rollout of previously classified files related to UFOs, both the White House and the military have maintained that no physical proof that alien life exists has ever been recovered.

During Monday’s interview, Davis also claimed that the photos and records his government access permitted him to see were still classified and there was no chance they would be released with UFO disclosure releases for decades.

‘Those are still classified, and they are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act because they’re probably classified for a 50 to 70-year period, 75-year period I believe,’ Davis explained

Davis, who said he was no longer ‘on the inside with the Department of War,’ said he was not satisfied with the speed of the Pentagon’s UFO documents team or the information that has been released in the first five batches, which started in May.

To this point, the thousands of photos, videos and decades-old files released by the Pentagon this year have yet to produce definitive proof that extraterrestrials exist or have visited Earth.

Davis added that there were more images and videos capable of being released which provide proof of legitimate UFO encounters which also ‘do not contain harmful information’ that would reveal the secrets of how the US gathers its intelligence.

As for what the longtime astrophysicist has seen and knows, Davis publicly requested that President Trump grant him immunity so he could reveal the truth about these alien races without fear of prosecution for exposing classified government secrets.

In a video shared on X, Davis said: ‘I investigated unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP) for 30 years. I’ve seen classified and proprietary defense intelligence industry evidence. Evidence that the American public and the world have a right to see.’

‘Mr President, with your signature, you could waive the SF-312 NDA [non-disclosure agreement] to protect UAP whistleblowers like myself. I respectfully request that you take swift and decisive action as the nature of UAP should not be kept deeply classified,’ he continued.

Davis claimed that all of the photos, reports and military records he saw documented incidents involving dead bodies pulled from crashed UFOs. He allegedly did not see  any information related to alien beings captured alive by the US military.

‘I don’t know what they eat. Most of them that I am aware were found dead. Although, I’ve heard that David Grusch had mentioned that there was one that he knew of that had been captured alive but I don’t know anything else,’ Davis explained.

Grusch has been one of the most outspoken government whistleblowers when it comes to UFOs and alien life.

The military veteran spent 14 years in the Air Force before working as an intelligence officer for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which builds and launches surveillance satellites for the Pentagon.

From 2019 to 2021, he represented NRO on the UAP Task Force, but eventually became a whistleblower after allegedly learning that elements of the US government had prevented Congressional oversight on matters related to extraterrestrials.

Grusch has also been calling for presidential immunity for all UFO whistleblowers so they can reveal what they allegedly saw while serving on classified projects tied to advanced propulsion research and national security.

Dr Davis, now a member of the Disclosure Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing public disclosure of UFOs, formerly worked as a consultant for the Pentagon’s UFO program starting in 2007.

He has previously spoken about crashed alien ships and extraterrestrials recovered at a congressional hearing last year.

Davis’s claims, which have yet to be proven or disclosed by the Pentagon, have been supported by fellow UFO researcher and former CIA scientist Dr Hal Puthoff.

Puthoff has publicly claimed that the US government was in possession of at least ten spacecraft which had crashed or been left behind on Earth over the last 80 years.

Davis has also claimed to have spoken with the commander of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, who allegedly confirmed that the debris from the Roswell UFO incident in 1947 was taken to the base shortly after the crash.

Unveiling the Hidden Cost Discrepancy in Australian Kitchens

0

Amid rising grocery bills, Australians are grappling with confusing food date labels that may lead them to discard edible groceries, wasting perfectly good food.

A recent survey conducted by financial comparison platform Finder reveals that 14 percent of Australians admit to consuming expired food in an effort to cut costs. Additionally, 68 percent of the 1,010 respondents reported adopting various money-saving practices to manage their food expenses.

Meanwhile, misunderstandings about “use-by” and “best-before” dates may be contributing to inefficiencies that hit household budgets hard.

OzHarvest, a prominent food rescue organization, has been advocating for changes to Australia’s date labeling system, asserting that the rationale behind current guidelines is outdated and that society’s understanding has evolved significantly since these rules were first introduced over 20 years ago.

The organization identifies date labeling as a key factor in the widespread issue of avoidable food waste across the nation.

Research commissioned by the group found food reaching its best-before or use-by date was the most commonly cited reason for disposal, reported by 58 per cent of high-wasting households and 44 per cent of low-waste households.

“Consumers are really confused by the difference between best-before and use-by,” said RMIT associate professor Lukas Parker, who has authored research on the topic with End Food Waste Australia.

“We know it’s around 50 per cent or more of people just don’t know the difference,” he told SBS News.

A 2021 government-backed national study estimated Australian households throw away up to $2,500 worth of food each year, with 7.6 million tonnes of food wasted annually — around 300kg per person.

When is food actually expired?

The term “use-by” means the food carrying the label can only be guaranteed safe to consume until that date. Highly perishable products like fresh meat might carry this label.

A “best-before” date, on the other hand, means the product is still safe to consume after that date, but it might no longer be at its best. Products like cereals and pasta might come with a “best-before” label.

Food suppliers are responsible for putting these dates on their products.

According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, you can still eat foods for a while after the best-before date. They may have lost some quality, but they can still be sold and consumed after the best-before date has passed.

Foods cannot legally be sold after the use-by date, the food standards regulator says.

But many consumers treat both dates the same, according to OzHarvest, meaning food that’s safe to eat ends up in the bin.

The ‘sniff’ test?

OzHarvest says people should trust their instincts and senses when deciding whether food past its date needs to go in the bin or is still safe to eat.

“Sniff a product, look at a product, taste it to see if it is okay,” its national policy and advocacy lead Katinka Day says.

“We’re really supportive of additional information on packets next to that best-before label that encourages people to think, to sniff, look, taste.”

The organisation is also advocating for certain products, including milk, to be moved from “use-by” labelling to “best-before”, encouraging consumers to use their senses to assess whether a product is safe to consume.

In the UK, some major supermarkets have replaced use-by dates with best-before dates on milk in a bid to reduce the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of milk wasted each year. Consumers are instead encouraged to use a sniff test to determine whether it has spoiled.

Food safety experts agreed that sensory cues can be useful for foods past their best-before date, but warned the “sniff test” shouldn’t be treated as a blanket rule for determining whether any food is safe to eat.

Food Safety Information Council CEO Lydia Buchtmann warned that relying on a smell alone for certain products can be dangerous, telling SBS News that food can smell completely normal and still contain disease-causing bacteria or viruses.

Julian Cox, an associate professor of food microbiology at the University of New South Wales, said the level of risk depends on the type of food.

For example, he told SBS News canned foods and shelf-stable products like cereals that have passed their best-before date are generally safe to assess via a smell test.

For more perishable foods, however, the picture is more complicated. While it’s easy to detect if an orange has gone mouldy, he said, a piece of cut rockmelon is a “beautiful growth medium for bad bugs” that might still look and smell normal.

For items like meat, he said, a use-by date means exactly that.

Preventing food waste — and saving money

Clearer date labelling could help consumers keep food for longer, reducing both household costs and the environmental impact of food waste.

Parker said his research initiative has been working to reimagine the way labels are presented to consumers.

“[We are] looking at ways to help avoid the confusion of the dates, but also providing consumers really helpful ways to extend the life of their food,” he said.

Some brands have already started implementing changes, including Nestlé, which has introduced a label on some of its MAGGI instant noodles products that reads: “If past the date, sniff, look or taste to avoid food waste”.

Parker said: “Something like instant noodles, for instance, is going to last a very long time, and they’re really well kept inside plastic and very stable.”

the back of a yellow packet of noodles. The words: "If past the date sniff, look or taste to avoid food waste!" are magnified as are line drawings of a nose, and eye and a tongue.

“So the best-before is really just a date that people should be using as a means to rotate the food in their house, rather than actually something that would you would use to throw out food.”

Cox said consumers can extend the shelf life of food with a best-before date by paying attention to storage conditions and whether the packaging has been opened.

“The idea of the cool, dark place for even quite shelf-stable foods is really important,” he said.

Lindsay Clancy’s Struggle: Family Raised Mental Health Alarms Before Tragic Outcome

0

If you or someone you care about is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Court testimony reveals that Lindsay Clancy’s family expressed significant concern regarding her mental health during the months leading up to the tragic incident involving her three children.

Lindsay Clancy, 36, faces serious charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, following the deaths of her children Cora, Dawson, and Callan, who were all under the age of 6. The children were discovered strangled within the Clancy family’s Duxbury residence in 2023. On Monday morning, the prosecution wrapped up its case.

The jury, tasked with deciding the outcome of this tragic case, comprises 12 women and six men; of these, six serve as alternates.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, Lindsay Clancy’s mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, addressed the jury. She expressed her worries about Lindsay’s mental wellbeing during the 2022 holiday season, although she also affirmed that Lindsay was a devoted and loving mother.

Lindsay Clancy does not contest that she killed the children. She and her defense attorneys contend she was experiencing ongoing postpartum psychosis at the time of the deaths.

She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

“Lindsay was struggling. We were all very concerned,” Susan Clancy said. “She was very nurturing, very loving. She was a wonderful mother. Wonderful.”

Susan Clancy said she began seeing a decline in Lindsay’s mental health in November 2022.

“She reached out to me in November and told me that she felt unwell,” Susan Clancy said. “She felt…Mostly she had insomnia. She was losing her appetite. She was, very anxious and sad.”

“She was begging for help,” Susan Clancy said.

When asked if she ever saw Lindsay Clancy treat the children bad, her mother-in-law responded, “no.”

Paula Musgrove, Lindsay Clancy’s mother, also told jurors about the mental health problems. In an Oct. 20, 2022 text message, Lindsay Clancy asked her mother for help.

“Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong. I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don’t know how I am going to get through the day…It’s just really scary, and I don’t want to be alone,” the text read.

Musgrove said she wasn’t concerned about the children’s safety.
