An Alaskan jogger was hospitalized following an alarming encounter with a bear in Anchorage this week.

While running alone on the Wolverine Bowl trail near Prospect Heights, the woman managed to escape a brown bear attack by deploying her bear spray, as reported by Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game.

She received medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Biologists who later surveyed the scene gathered samples, but no bears were located.

The department advises that any sightings of aggressive or peculiar behavior in wildlife should be promptly reported.

Warning signs have been posted at the Prospect Heights trailhead, the department said, adding that hikers should stay off closed trails.

“Thick, dense summer foliage can block sightlines, making surprise encounters more likely,” the department said. “Choose hiking routes with good visibility and away from known attractants, like salmon-bearing streams.”

When hiking in bear country, people should carry a deterrent such as bear spray or a firearm, stay in groups, make noise to avoid surprising a bear, stay alert for signs of bears, don’t approach bears and keep pets on a leash.

“If you surprise a bear, especially one with cubs or on a food cache, it may react in a threatened or defensive manner,” the department said. “The bear may be agitated and may huff, stomp, make a popping sound with its teeth, salivate or lay its ears back against its head and charge.”

They urged staying calm, standing your ground, readying deterrent, staying in a group and talking calmly. Never run.

“If the bear is stationary, move away slowly while keeping your eyes on the bear,” the department said.

“If the bear starts to move toward you or charges, stop and stand your ground. Let the bear know you are not a threat. Behaving calmly, moving slowly, and speaking in a low calm voice will help de-escalate the situation. If the bear continues to approach, use your deterrent when the bear is within range.”

The attack comes less than a month after another woman was mauled by a bear in Anchorage.

The July victim was walking with a friend and her three dogs in the Bear Valley residential neighborhood, adjacent to Chugach State Park in south Anchorage, when the bear approached.

Officials said the hikers were on an unofficial, user-made trail that climbs a steep hillside in a zigzag pattern. The area was heavily overgrown with dense vegetation, which created poor visibility and increased the risk of surprising wildlife, the department said.

“The bear came out of the dense alders, made brief contact with one of the hikers, and left the scene,” the department added.

The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to recover.

In the wake of a reconciliatory meeting with King Charles, Prince Harry is reportedly eager to make more frequent trips to Britain. Sources reveal that the Duke of Sussex plans to return to the UK “every few months” over the next year.

Scheduled on his calendar is a trip next month when Harry will engage in activities for the upcoming Invictus Games, set to take place in Birmingham next summer. Additionally, he will support WellChild, a charity dedicated to helping children with serious illnesses.

As of now, it remains uncertain if the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, who is 45, or their children—Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five—will accompany Harry on his upcoming September visit.

Last month’s UK visit was marked by a momentous behind-the-scenes gathering at Highgrove, where King Charles hosted Harry, Meghan, and their children, fostering an atmosphere of reconciliation and renewal.

Queen Camilla, 79, was also present at the Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire when father and son exchanged words in what was the first public in-person meeting in four years. 

Charles had not seen his youngest grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, since 2022, when they were just three and one. 

Meghan posted a photograph online of Harry and their children in Althorp’s gardens carrying bouquets of flowers. They were believed to be making their way to lay the blooms at Diana’s grave.

It is understood Harry wants to spend more time in the UK so he can see his father and wider family more often, and as he feels he can support his UK-based charities with more in-person meetings. 

A source close to Harry told The Times: ‘The template for his visits has been working well, so the frequency of trips will increase, especially in the run-up to Invictus which he’s determined to make the best games yet. So he’ll be coming back and forth a lot more, every few months.

‘The way the wind is blowing, he’s going to want to be here more and more. He’s happy these trips can now have more focus on the patronages and be less obscured by the other nonsense. 

‘He wants more of a foothold here, more trips back, less courtroom drama. And he always loves seeing his family.’

It is not known whether the King and Harry will meet when the latter returns next month, as Charles is expected to be at Balmoral in Scotland on his summer break

Sources claim that no decision has been made on whether Harry will reside at Buckingham Palace during the visit.

Harry is also understood to be hoping to return to Ukraine in the coming months, having visited the war-torn country twice in the past two years. 

Earlier this month it was reported that Harry is believed to want his father to stand alongside him at next summer’s Invictus Games.

King Charles has reportedly received an olive branch from his son in the form of an invitation to the multi-sport event, held in Birmingham.

One source told the Mirror: ‘Next year is a big deal for Harry. He is determined the Birmingham Games will be the best ever. It would mean the world to him to have his father there.’

Harry and Meghan, who quit as senior royals in 2020 and moved to California, have also recently spoken about their wish to introduce their children to their British roots.

During a visit to Warwickshire last month, Harry said: ‘I love being here, this is the highlight of my month. 

‘Actually probably the last few months. It’s very easy to sit in your grief, to sit in your stress but, guys, if you are feeling it, share it.’

A Vietnam Airlines flight had to jettison fuel and make an emergency landing after its tail hit the runway during takeoff.

The Boeing 787-9, on route from Munich, Germany to Hanoi, Vietnam, overshot the runway at takeoff, as reported by flight-tracking platform Flightradar24.

In a video clip shared on X by aircraft engineer Fahad Naim, flight VN-34 is seen taxiing down the runway before a loud thud breaks the calm.

The rear of the aircraft seemed to hit the ground, stirring up a significant dust cloud while utilizing almost the full runway length for lift-off.

The plane was observed circling at an altitude of about 9,000 feet above Munich for nearly two hours, with footage on Flightradar24 capturing the aircraft releasing fuel before safely landing back at Munich International Airport.

Naim also shared images he claims show damage to the aircraft, noting that “the whole tail strike module is gone” and there were “punctured tyres.”

He also pointed to “a puncture through the lower fuselage, with torn composite and heavy scrape marks running aft.”

He says he suspects a brake seizure or internal fault, however he notes that it’s too early for the exact cause of the incident to be confirmed.

Vietnam Airlines said in a statement to Reuters that the plane had returned to its departure airport due to a “technical issue.”

It noted that flight crew had followed procedures and landed safely at Munich Airport.

“The passengers and cabin crew members are safe,” ⁠the airline said.

Vietnam Airlines said the aircraft is being inspected and it is co-ordinating with the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, Munich Airport said that after the flight returned it was unable to taxi off ‌the ⁠north runway after under its own power and was stranded, forcing the runway to be closed and planes to be rerouted via the south runway.

In a shocking turn of events, torrential rain has unleashed catastrophic flooding across Indiana, claiming the lives of six individuals, with more people still unaccounted for.

Entire communities are grappling with relentless deluges, as rivers break their banks and unleash torrents, forcing residents to abandon their homes. In scenes of desperation, many have taken to kayaks to navigate the flooded streets.

Responders are tirelessly working with boats, rescuing those trapped in waterlogged houses along the White River as water levels continue to rise alarmingly.

Over the last seven days, heavy rainfall has battered Indiana, pushing rivers to unprecedented heights and prompting residents to seek refuge on higher ground.

In response to the widespread destruction, more than a dozen counties have declared local disasters. The greatest impact has been observed along river corridors stretching from Hamilton County into the north side of Indianapolis.

President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana, and federal disaster assistance is available to the state, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the city was dealing with its most severe flooding in more than 30 years and conditions were shifting rapidly. 

Hundreds of homes in neighborhoods between the river and parallel canals were evacuated on Saturday and 911 dispatchers had received hundreds of calls for help.

The Indianapolis Fire Department put the number of rescues at 95 people and 45 pets as of late afternoon.

More than 350 evacuations occurred in Delaware County including residents of a senior mobile home community in Tipton County, the governor’s office said.

Rescues and welfare checks also were happening in Fayette County.

Six people were killed in the floods over the past week, including a four-year-old boy killed when a tree fell on his home.

A 58-year-old woman was swept away after driving into floodwaters, and a 19-year-old man was found dead after jumping into a river on Wednesday.

Jacob Spence, director of Marion County Emergency Management, called it a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ type flood.

‘This is an unprecedented event, and unfortunately we’re setting some new records,’ he told The Associated Press.

The National Weather Service reported that more than 11 inches of rain fell over a two-day period in some areas. 

The White River crested at more than 24ft in the communities of Anderson and Noblesville, surpassing records set in 1913.

While some floodwaters were receding north of Indianapolis, flash-flood warnings and watches remained in place Saturday across a swath of central Indiana.

Forecasters expected the White River to crest on Saturday evening in the Indianapolis area, where National Guard vehicles were among those helping with the rescue efforts. 

Earlier this week, severe storms wreaked havoc across other parts of the Midwest, causing tornadoes, heavy rains and flash flooding. 

Storm damage was reported from the Chicago area all the way to western Pennsylvania. Power has yet to be restored for some residents in other parts of Indiana.

Residents posted videos on social media that showed submerged homes, vehicles stranded in high water, a power pole being toppled by rushing water and roads being washed away.

There were ominous clouds over Noblesville on Saturday morning, but the river already had marked its historic crest the night before, leaving homes standing in water, parking lots flooded and corn fields saturated. 

The community’s historic covered bridge, Potter’s Bridge, was still standing.

‘This is crazy for all of us,’ said Matt Doudt, the city’s photographer, who was out early to document the aftermath. 

He pointed to a grassy commons area that usually hosts farmers’ markets and concerts. That was under water. So was a brand new memorial and flower garden recently installed by the city.

He said Noblesville, with its historic charm and brick streets, didn’t get much rain in recent days but that the flooding was caused by the downpours that happened in communities upstream. 

All that water had nowhere to go but to rush down to Noblesville – and now Indianapolis, he said.
