Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko’s 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, appeared remotely at a court hearing on Thursday, where her father was granted temporary guardianship of the late actress’s estate.

Panettiere died at the age of 36 on August 16 at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Her death was ruled accidental and attributed to the “toxic effects” of multiple drugs, including fentanyl.

She is survived by Kaya, whom she welcomed during her nine-year relationship with her former fiancé, Klitschko, 50.

Last month, Klitschko petitioned a Los Angeles court to become the temporary guardian of his only child’s estate, seeking to protect Kaya’s inheritance as the sole beneficiary of Panettiere’s reported $6 million fortune.

The former heavyweight boxing champion said that federal agents investigating Panettiere’s death, along with an unnamed nonfamily member, had taken or attempted to sell items belonging to her. He argued that no one was currently authorized to recover the property on behalf of his daughter.

In 2018, Panettiere transferred full custody of Kaya to Klitschko while she was dealing with postpartum depression and addiction. Klitschko subsequently moved their daughter to his native Ukraine.

The father and daughter joined the Los Angeles County court hearing by videoconference. They spoke only to introduce themselves, and Kaya was the only person visible on camera, seated at a table in front of curtains.

Judge Stephanie Santoro appointed Klitschko temporary guardian of Kaya’s estate until a permanent administrator can be named.

Santoro asked Klitschko’s attorney, Diane Park, to explain why the request required immediate action.

Park said they believed a person identified only as a nonrelative had removed items from Panettiere’s property and attempted to sell some of her jewelry at a pawn shop.

She also told the court that assets could go unaccounted for while authorities continued investigating Panettiere’s death.

According to court documents, Klitschko needed legal authority to address the matter with both the pawn shop owner and law enforcement agencies.

Park added that Panettiere’s tax returns must be filed this month. Satisfied by the explanation, Santoro approved Klitschko’s request.

The judge also said Kaya would not need to attend the next hearing, which is scheduled for December 7.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Panettiere, Klitschko and his attorney for comment but has not received a response.

In an October 1 filing obtained by The Daily Mail, Klitschko wrote that he was “informed and believes” Panettiere’s 2025 individual state and federal tax returns are due under an extension on October 15, 2026, with approximately $30,000 in income tax owed.

The filing states that Klitschko is concerned that missing the deadline could expose Panettiere’s estate to “unnecessary interest and failure to file penalties,” creating a direct financial loss for Kaya, described as her mother’s sole intestate heir.

Klitschko says in the documents that he ‘intends to advance his own funds to pay the tax which is due, and will later seek reimbursement once the probate estate is opened, subject to any required Court approval.’ 

After Klitschko claimed in his original temporary guardianship filing that some of Panettiere’s personal property, including jewelry, ‘have disappeared,’ new legal documents filed on October 5 from the former boxer allege someone previously connected to the actress sold items to a pawn shop.

The filing obtained by The Daily Mail reads: ‘Petitioner is informed and believes that a non-family member previously connected to Hayden sold certain items belonging to Hayden, believed to include jewelry, to a pawn shop. 

‘The pawn shop has declined to disclose specific item information without being contacted by law enforcement.

‘Absent such contact, there is a real and continuing risk that any remaining items, including jewelry, believed to belong to Hayden, will be sold, transferred or otherwise rendered unrecoverable.’

The former couple met at a book launch in 2009. After two years of dating, they split up in 2011, before rekindling their relationship two years later. 

In October 2013, they were engaged, with the actress giving birth to their daughter Kaya in December 2014. However, it was confirmed in 2018 that the couple had split again but remained on amicable terms. 

Later that year, Panettiere announced she had made the ‘difficult decision’ to sign full custody of Kaya to her ex.

The widely discussed move came after Panettiere fell into a deep depression, which she said made her ‘feel nothing,’ and led to her ‘turning to wine’ and ultimately being sent to rehab for both depression and substance abuse. 

In her final interview in May, she spoke to Dear Mome about her choice, saying: ‘It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make. I was going through a really challenging time in my life.’ 

Panettiere began acting as a child, appearing in soap operas, then gained wider recognition for her role in the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans with Denzel Washington, and as the voice of Dot in Pixar’s 1998 film A Bug’s Life. 

Panettiere later found fame playing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the superhero drama Heroes before starring as country singer Juliette Barnes for six seasons on Nashville.

She earned two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress on the show, while her singing produced 11 entries on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Panettiere’s film credits include 2006’s Bring It On: All or Nothing, the comedy-drama film Raising Helen, and appearances in Scream 4 and Scream VI as Kirby Reed.

Caitlin Clark fans were stunned Thursday after learning that the Indiana Fever star received just one first-place vote in the WNBA MVP race despite a remarkable All-Star season.

Las Vegas Aces standout A’ja Wilson captured the MVP award in dominant fashion, earning 65 first-place votes—worth 10 points each—from the 74 ballots submitted. According to The Spun, no voter placed Wilson lower than second.

Only three other players received a first-place vote: Olivia Miles earned six, Kelsey Mitchell received two and Clark received one. Miles was the clear second-place choice, collecting 40 second-place votes worth seven points each. Mitchell received 12 second-place votes, Stewart had seven and Clark had six.

Wilson also led the overall points tally by a wide margin, finishing with 713—more than Miles and Clark combined. Miles totaled 442 points, followed by Mitchell with 287, Clark with 212 and Stewart with 171.

According to Fox News, Clark appeared on 55 ballots. Her breakdown included one first-place vote, six second-place votes, 20 third-place votes, 16 fourth-place votes and 12 fifth-place votes. She finished with 212 points, well behind Miles’ 442 and Mitchell’s 287.

Although commentators widely agreed that Wilson enjoyed an outstanding season and was a deserving MVP winner, many were surprised that Clark received so little support at the top of the ballot. Fans quickly took to social media to express their frustration.

“Miles finishing with more than Mitchell and Clark, combined, proves this award is an absolute joke. It’s become the most meaningless award in professional sports,” one X user wrote.

Britain could be in for unsettled weather next week as forecasters track the remnants of Hurricane Isaias across the Atlantic in the days ahead.

The first hurricane of the Atlantic season is expected to reach the US Gulf Coast tonight, bringing powerful winds, a potentially dangerous storm surge and the risk of severe flooding.

After travelling up the US East Coast over the weekend, the low-pressure system is forecast to be absorbed by the jet stream before moving east across the Atlantic towards the UK.

Some weather models suggest Isaias’s remnants could carry tropical air, strong winds and heavy rain to Britain by the middle of next week, although the precise effects remain uncertain.

ITV weather presenter Laura Tobin told Good Morning Britain today that the low-pressure system could lead to “some stormy conditions by the middle of next week”.

The Met Office has adopted a more cautious outlook, with forecasters assessing how the storm system will interact with broader atmospheric patterns in the coming days.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey told the Daily Mail this morning: “Hurricane Isaias is currently forecast to make landfall along the US Gulf Coast later today.

“Before landfall, the system may briefly strengthen further, bringing the potential for damaging winds, storm surge and heavy rainfall to parts of the southern US.

“Following landfall, Isaias is expected to weaken as it moves inland, although heavy rain may continue to affect parts of the southern and eastern US for several days.

“While the remnants are forecast to move north-eastwards into the Atlantic, it is too early to determine whether they will have any influence on the UK’s weather.”

Ms Maxey said the outcome would “depend on how the system interacts with the wider atmospheric pattern over the coming days”. She added that forecasters would “monitor developments closely and will update the forecast as confidence increases”.

Met Office senior operational meteorologist Marco Petagna tweeted last night that there was a “bit more ‘oomf’ just starting to show up in low pressure developments taking place in the northern North Atlantic heading into next week”.

Meanwhile, northern England is set for a blustery day, with gusts of up to 60mph expected to create difficult conditions, particularly across the Pennines.

The strong south-westerly winds will also drive heavy rain into the region. Western hills are likely to see the most persistent downpours, with up to 2in (50mm) potentially falling widely.

Tomorrow is expected to bring sunny intervals and showers, with hail and thunder possible in north-western areas. Sunday, by contrast, should be largely dry and bright, with only light winds.

Monday is expected to be cloudy with showery rain, followed by a brighter but breezy Tuesday. Conditions will then remain changeable throughout mid-October.

A series of low pressure systems will run across the North Atlantic, often to the north and northwest of the UK, bringing occasional bands of rain and strong winds. 

These will be interspersed with brighter and showery conditions, with rain expected to be most widespread across hills in western and especially north-western parts. 

Longer drier interludes are likely in southern-eastern areas, but will still see some rain – and the rest of the month is also set to maintain a changeable pattern overall.

Temperatures have fallen over the past days to around average for the time of year – after last month was the joint-fourth warmest September in the UK on record.

This year has also seen the UK’s seventh warmest April, the joint-third warmest May, the second warmest June, the second warmest July and the sixth warmest August.

The Met Office said the country went 117 consecutive days where somewhere recorded at least 20C – a run which started on June 12 and ended on Wednesday.

After an extremely dry summer, most of England and all of Wales remain officially in drought and about 30million people are still under hosepipe restrictions.

But supercharged El Niño conditions in the Pacific – which affect weather across the world – are set to put the UK at greater risk of a wet and stormy autumn overall.

In the US, residents have been boarding up windows and stacking sandbags while thousands of National Guard soldiers have been deploying in anticipation of Isaias. 

The Category 2 hurricane will cause dangerous conditions in the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama and southern Mississippi when it makes landfall late tonight.

Heavy rain and flooding were possible into the weekend as far north as Tennessee and North Carolina, as the system strikes along the Alabama-Florida state line.

Meanwhile Hurricane Simon, which formed as a tropical storm on Wednesday off Mexico and became a hurricane last night, is set to strengthen into a Category 4.

Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 105mph last night and could bring 15in (38cm) of rain, with water from the storm surge and high tide reaching up to 7ft.

The Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet so far this year because of the strong El Niño phenomenon, which disrupts storm formation over the ocean.

In the UK, the first named storm of the 2026/27 season will be Storm Austen, in the partnership between the Met Office, Ireland’s Met Éireann and Dutch service KNMI.

Met Éireann selected the name in honour of Austen Nagle, the Irish Meteorological Service’s first director. It is unclear whether any storm will be named next week.

Matty ‘J’ Johnson has come under fire online after appearing not to comment publicly on the domestic violence charges involving his friend Sam Wood.

The two men are both former Bachelor contestants and met their wives, Laura Byrne and Snezana Markoski, on the Channel Ten dating show. Together with fellow Bachelor alum Matt Agnew, they have maintained a close friendship in public and across social media.

But some social media users have criticised Johnson, 39, for not issuing a statement condemning domestic violence, particularly after Agnew, 39, and other reality television personalities connected to Wood spoke out.

“I am being flooded with messages praising Matt Agnew from The Bachelor for condemning DV. He is awesome,” activist account Warrior for Animals wrote.

“However, there is disappointment that another Matt, Matty J from Bachelor, has decided to go in the opposite direction on this…”

“It is entirely within Matty J’s legal right to speak out against DV broadly, and doing so is incredibly important for public figures given the gravity of this issue.”

The account claimed Johnson risked “losing fans” by failing to make “the most basic statement on domestic violence” after Wood was arrested and refused bail.

Warrior for Animals then shared a screenshot of Johnson’s Instagram profile and said the account had “unfollowed” him.

Several further screenshots were posted, showing comments from other followers who said they were disappointed by Johnson’s apparent silence.

Some of the messages sharply criticised the television personality and suggested his recent “Father of the Year” honour should be reconsidered because he had not taken a stronger public position.

Johnson was named the 2026 Australian Father of the Year by The Fathering Project at Admiralty House in Sydney last month.

Bachelorette star Angie Kent wrote to Warrior for Animals: “To profit off a public profile selling the ‘fairytale ending’, talking about and directing everyone else and then hide behind silence when a crisis happens?”

“I hope it’s not about protecting profits because that’s gross. And I hope it’s not about loyalty because no amount of friendship excuses strangling anyone. Ever.”

“Having privilege and a platform means using it when it actually matters, not just when it’s convenient or profitable. I hope this isn’t the case.”

“I don’t follow the Facebook groups or his podcast, so I’m not really in his zone of influence. But he’s always seemed like a safe and nice enough dude.”

“So let’s hope there’s a more solid explanation than fear of losing cash and protecting a mate.”

The account agreed, adding: “It’s pretty crazy for Matty J not to even have the most basic and generic statement on domestic violence.”

‘I am not surprised his fans are disappointed. It’s a scary thought if this is protecting a mate.’

The Daily Mail is not suggesting Johnson is ‘protecting’ Wood, only that some fans are upset he has not been more vocal since Wood’s arrest, while other reality TV figures have spoken out publicly.

The debate unfolding online reflects a broader question about how public figures should respond when high-profile allegations dominate the news cycle. Should influencers be expected to publicly denounce someone facing serious criminal charges because of the strength of community outrage, or is it more appropriate to refrain from comment while proceedings remain ongoing and allegations untested?

Several influencers and commentators have faced fierce backlash this week after noting that they do not know the full facts of the case, that the allegations have yet to be proven in court, and that Wood remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.

Others, however, have been hailed as champions of women for publicly condemning Wood, despite his lawyer disputing the strangulation allegation and indicating his client may rely on a self-defence argument.

Someone else said: ‘I know we should be directing our anger at Sam, but it’s men that are in positions like Matty that don’t speak up that are a big part of the problem.

‘And it’s just being an effing decent person. Without worrying about your own reputation. Women are literally dying.’ 

Johnson has seemingly been friends with Wood, 46, since they, along with their wives Byrne and Markoski, made a special guest appearance as ‘Bachelor royalty’ on season seven of the show in 2019, which starred Agnew.  

Despite Johnson appearing to stay silent on Sam’s arrest, Byrne spoke up about Wood’s charges on her Life Uncut podcast alongside Brittany Hockley. 

‘Sam Wood has been arrested for domestic violence charges. I think it’s absolutely abhorrent and disgusting and we don’t know exactly what’s gone down yet,’ Hockley, 39, said.

‘Somebody allegedly was taken out of the house that night into an ambulance. That’s all that has been released.’

Byrne responded: ‘That for me is enough to form a very strong opinion. I think sometimes domestic violence is quite othered. It happens in other families. 

‘It happens with people who have alcohol or abuse issues. This is such a clear example that domestic violence can happen no matter your social standing.

‘No matter how much money you have. No matter how elite you are or the profile you’ve built… This to me is just such a clear example of how deep it runs within our culture within Australia and this can exist within every household.’

The Daily Mail made multiple attempts to contact Byrne and Johnson for comment.

It comes after a court heard on Thursday that Markoski feared her celebrity fitness trainer husband was going to kill her during an alleged domestic violence attack at a beachfront apartment in the La Mer complex in Noosa.

Police also told Queensland’s Maroochydore Magistrates Court on the Sunshine Coast of an earlier ‘similar’ incident in Victoria, which did not proceed further at the time.

Wood was denied bail and will remain behind bars after his arrest on Saturday night when police were called to the family’s luxury apartment on Noosa’s Hastings Street.

Sergeant Janette Grigoris told the bail hearing that Wood’s stepdaughter Eve, 21, called Triple Zero and ‘referred to the victim having been choked’.

The prosecutor told the court Markoski thought she was going to die and is now living in fear of retribution from the former Bachelor star.

Sgt Grigoris said Markoski had not made a formal statement to police but had given a version of events in a video recording.

Sgt Grigoris said Markoski referred to being choked, banging her head on the floor and not being able to breathe.

She told police the alleged attack ended only when one of the children called out.

The court was shown photographs of her alleged injuries and was told Markoski supported the criminal charges against Wood.

Sgt Grigoris told the court of a ‘previous’ incident in Victoria that was ‘similar in nature’, to which police were called, but the victim did not make a complaint.

Sergeant Grigoris said Wood’s behaviour had been ‘escalating’.

Wood’s solicitor Mathew Cuskelly said his client denied strangling or assaulting his wife.

The court heard Wood may rely on self-defence if domestic violence charges over an alleged attack on his wife go to trial.
