Florida Trooper Chases Street Racer at Blazing 140 MPH

0

Dramatic dashboard camera footage recently released by the Florida Highway Patrol shows the heart-stopping moments when a state trooper raced toward a street takeover that had brought traffic on Interstate 75 to a standstill. As the trooper navigated through a sea of halted vehicles, the high-speed chase that followed hit speeds of 140 mph, according to authorities.

The chase began with an urgency echoed by flashing emergency lights and blaring sirens. The trooper sped along the interstate, quickly approaching a chaotic scene where vehicles blocked all northbound lanes near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa, shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Upon arrival, the dashcam captured pandemonium as people darted between cars, while others scrambled to get back into their vehicles, adding to the commotion.

With determination, the trooper carefully maneuvered among the clusters of cars before setting his sights on a green BMW, the driver of which was later identified as 25-year-old Yulian Lugo, who was attempting to flee the scene.

Officials reported that Lugo accelerated to an alarming speed of around 140 mph—double the speed limit—before making a swift exit off the interstate, intensifying the pursuit.

The dashcam then showed the trooper following him into what appeared to be a residential neighborhood, where Lugo eventually pulled over without further incident.

The trooper ordered Lugo out of the BMW before placing him in handcuffs.

Moments later, two passengers stepped out before sitting on the hood of the patrol vehicle as the trooper secured the scene.

Lugo was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover, both felony offenses, authorities said.

Three passengers – a 24-year-old and two 18-year-olds – were also ultimately arrested, and each was charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All four were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.

Investigators said the incident began around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when hundreds of vehicles blocked all northbound lanes of I-75 while participants allegedly performed burnouts and other stunts in the middle of the interstate.

Investigators alleged Lugo fled the scene as many of the vehicles dispersed when law enforcement arrived, triggering the pursuit shown in the newly released dashcam footage.

The I-75 incident marked the latest in a series of takeover-related events that have drawn increased attention from Florida law enforcement this summer.

In June, the St. Augustine Beach Police Department said it thwarted a planned “teen takeover” before it began after investigators used electronic monitoring to identify plans circulating online.

Earlier this year, Orlando police also released video showing hundreds of riders on e-bikes swarming downtown streets, running red lights, blocking traffic and delaying an ambulance. Officers said the group created a significant public safety hazard and vowed to continue cracking down on similar incidents.

Love & Hip Hop’s Sidney Starr Faces Shocking Allegations of Child Molestation and Sodomy

0

Sidney Starr, widely known from the Love & Hip Hop franchise and also recognized as Sidney Favors, is currently embroiled in serious legal troubles. The reality TV personality is facing multiple felony charges related to child abuse.

The charges against Starr, who is both a transgender model and TV star, include sexual battery of a child under age 16, aggravated child molestation, and sodomy, as outlined in Georgia court records accessed by Oxygen.

Viewers may remember Starr from her appearance in season nine of Love & Hip Hop: New York. Her arrest took place on August 2, following a call to police in Hapeville, Georgia, reporting a sexual assault at an Embassy Suites hotel located in the greater Atlanta area, according to an official press statement.

After being detained, Starr admitted to engaging in the acts but insisted they were consensual, as revealed in an interview with investigators, detailed in an arrest warrant attained by Oxygen.

Currently held without bond at Fulton County Jail, Starr awaits her next court appearance set for August 25, according to the latest court records.

“Because this case involves a juvenile,” the Hapeville Police Department said in a press release sent to Oxygen, “no additional information will be released from our agency.”

Starr previously gained attention in 2012 for falsely claiming she was in a relationship with rapper Chingy after the two posed for a fan photo. The rumor sparked backlash and she later apologized for making up the story, according to TMZ

In addition to Love & Hip Hop: New York, Starr has also made appearances on FOX’s Empire and Maury Povich’s titular talk short.

Just days before her arrest, she shared news of her latest project.

“I’m BACK on your TV screens,” she wrote on Instagram. “Watch me August 2nd on the @thezeusnetwork as I co host with @realmissnatalienunn and @isaiah_jaay The Very First Bad Boys Reunion!!!  This is going to be a Reunion y’all don’t want to miss!!! It’s Crazyyyyyyyyyyyy in a good way. So get your popcorn. Tune in August 2th on @thezeusnetwork !! Thank you @lemuelplummer !”

Civilian Who Intervened in In-N-Out Shooting Shares Gunman’s Unexpected Reaction

0

A brave Idaho resident bravely recounted an intense confrontation with a shooter who tragically took the lives of three people and injured seven others. This hero described how the gunman faltered upon realizing he was facing return fire.

Jordan Salinas, 35, was en route to a horseback riding date with his girlfriend on a Saturday afternoon. As he arrived at the newly opened In-N-Out parking lot in Twin Falls, chaos ensued around the same time that 24-year-old Chad Williams began his attack using an AK-style rifle, according to police reports.

Salinas noticed the panic as people fled in terror. It quickly became evident to him that a shooter was causing the mayhem, he shared with the Idaho Statesman.

His instincts kicked in as he reacted swiftly to the threat. Salinas pulled out his semi-automatic pistol from a shoulder holster and courageously moved toward the gunfire to confront Williams.

During an interview with ABC News, Salinas recalled how the assailant initially seemed unnervingly at ease while targeting unsuspecting individuals. However, the shooter’s confidence noticeably wavered once Salinas began to fire back.

‘As soon as some rounds started coming at him, everything changed immediately. All that bravado he had immediately crumbled,’ Salinas told the outlet.

An unidentified off-duty police officer also fired at Williams, and he and Salinas’s decisive actions likely saved the lives of others, Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said on Sunday.

‘We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen and their heroic action to stop this incident,’ the police chief said during a press conference on Sunday.

‘We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties.’

Williams died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after turning the weapon on himself. Authorities are ‘confident’ he acted alone, Hicks said, but a motive for the shooting remains unclear.

On Sunday evening, Salinas took to Facebook to talk about the previous ‘overwhelming’ 24 hours.

‘I want to sincerely thank my family, friends, and everyone who has reached out with messages, prayers, and support… they mean more to me than I can put into words,’ he said.

‘My heart remains with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by yesterday’s tragedy. Thank you for continuing to keep them in your thoughts and prayers,’ Salinas continued.

He further recalled to the Idaho Statesman that the shooter ‘did not like when bullets started firing both ways.’

Salinas, a healthcare worker and full-time caregiver for his disabled brother, told the outlet that he began self-defense training five years ago after the 2021 shooting at the Boise Towne Square Mall that left two dead and four others injured.

He said that the tragedy made him realize that gunmen often go after ‘soft targets’ – people like his wheelchair-bound brother and the aide by his side.

Salinas practices shooting on the weekends and does his own training in the desert. Until Sunday, he had never pointed his gun at a human and never thought he would have to, he shared.

Two of the three people who were killed in Saturday’s shooting have been identified by loved ones as In-N-Out employee Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California, and Christopher Claunch, 59, an employee at Renaissance Ranch Recovery Center.

Of the seven who were injured, two were taken to the hospital and later released. Three others were stable after the shooting, and the remaining two have been left in critical condition.

Claunch’s sister, Kimberly Castaneda, told the New York Times that her brother had been sober for two years after struggling with alcoholism.

She reminisced about spending time with him during the Fourth of July holiday and how she enjoyed his carefree attitude.

‘My silly brother took my headband that I was wearing with little tin wheels on it… and he sat with those things on like it was just no big deal,’ she told the Times.

‘He was always being a goofball.’

Claunch was from California but lived in Idaho for about three decades, Castaneda said.

So when an In-N-Out opened up in the state, he was thrilled to stop by and get the Pacific Coast classic take-out, she shared.

‘Ashley you are so beautiful. You will be missed so much. I remember when you were baby and you to come stay with me so mom could go to work,’ one family member commented.

‘You have become a beautiful young lady. Rest in paradise.’

In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder described Garibay as a ‘beautiful’ associate who was working at the drive-thru.

‘My heart is broken, my chest is heavy, my eyes burn from the tears I’ve shed,’ Snyder said in a statement shared on Sunday.

‘We lost one of our beautiful Associates tonight. She was taking care of our most important asset – our Customers, and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn’t value the lives of others or his own.’

‘He shot both on our property and off, and ended his life shortly after he took the precious lives of our Associate and Customers, innocent people who never saw it coming,’ Snyder added.

Tragic End for NC Couple: Suspected Murder-Suicide Shatters 40th Anniversary Celebration

0

Authorities are investigating a tragic incident where a married couple was discovered lifeless in their North Carolina residence, suspected to be a case of murder-suicide.

On Thursday, Stephen Larnell Willetts and his wife Tracey Parker Willetts were both found shot dead inside their home in Wilmington, North Carolina.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, collected evidence suggests this event was a murder-suicide, with indications pointing to the wife shooting her husband before ending her own life.

Deputies had initially arrived at the scene following an emergency call early Thursday morning.

One of the Willetts’ smartwatches “detected a fall and automatically called 911 after the alarm was not canceled, prompting the emergency response,” WWAY reported.

Kyle Tucker Silences Wrigley Field Boos with Dodgers Return Showdown

0

CHICAGO –– At the start of the season, when Kyle Tucker faced boos in a familiar stadium he once called home, he brushed it aside with little concern.

However, the narrative took a different turn on Monday night, and Tucker’s reaction hinted at something less than amusement.

Returning to Wrigley Field for the first time since swapping his Cubs jersey for Dodgers blue this past offseason, Tucker found a lukewarm welcome that clashed with the ballpark’s “Friendly Confines” moniker.

Every appearance at the plate was marked by relentless boos from the crowd, beginning with his first at-bat and echoing through each subsequent one.

“I’m not sure,” Tucker reflected when questioned about the crowd’s hostility. “Last year, I gave it my all. Despite a hand fracture and calf injury, I pushed through to help in the playoffs, doing everything I could for the team.”

Evidently, that didn’t sway a nearly 40,000-person crowd on the North Side to welcome him with a warm greeting.

Tucker’s lone season with the Cubs didn’t go according to plan, of course. After an All-Star first half, the slugger slumped down the stretch while battling his hand and calf injuries.

Though the team still made the playoffs, and prevailed in a three-game series against the Padres in the wild-card round, their NLDS elimination to the rival Brewers ultimately qualified as a disappointment.

Tucker’s 4-for-16, one-RBI performance in that series also left a disappointing impression –– at least, it seemed, among the fan base –– before he entered free agency and signed his $240 million deal with the Dodgers this past January.

“I mean, I liked playing here last year,” Tucker said. “There were some really great guys over there and they have a good team.”

“Didn’t end up great at the end of the year,” he added of his up-and-down campaign. “But I had a good run.”

Monday’s scene was not exactly new for Tucker.

During a May trip back to Houston to face the Astros –– the team with which he spent his first seven MLB seasons before being traded to the Cubs last year –– the outfielder was also booed in a way he hadn’t been during his only prior visit in 2025 (having “Dodgers” across his chest seemed to have something to do with that).

That night, however, he said “I don’t really focus on crowd noise and stuff” and “don’t really have a take.”

On Monday, his answer struck a different tone, even while he insisted it was “nice being back and playing here.”

On the field, Tucker went 2-for-3 with a walk in the defeat, snapping the latest slump in his disappointing debut season with the Dodgers after going 3-for-19 in his previous seven games.

“I just try to move on to the next day if I have a bad game,” he said, despite continuing to sport career-lows in batting average (.240) and OPS (.710). “If I have a good game, I try and just keep it going. So, I mean, felt like I had good at-bats tonight. And I’ll just try to continue that to tomorrow’s game.”

Yet, Monday’s performance also came with a baserunning mistake, with Tucker getting thrown out at second base –– one at-bat before Teoscar Hernández hit a home run, no less –– while trying to stretch for a double on a line drive off the wall in right field.

“They made a good play,” Tucker said, explaining he was trying to take a chance with the Dodgers facing a three-run deficit in the sixth.

Manager Dave Roberts, however, was more critical.

“It just doesn’t look good when you’re down three,” he said.

On a night full of booing, it was the one time Tucker prompted Wrigley Field to cheer.

Brooklyn Beckham & Nicola Unwind at Elton’s Nice Villa Retreat

0

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz recently showcased their opulent getaway on social media, spending the weekend with his godfather, legendary musician Elton John, after narrowly avoiding a run-in with his estranged parents in Nice.

The 27-year-old aspiring chef has been enjoying a luxurious stay aboard Elton’s yacht and took some time to unwind at the singer’s expansive £15 million villa, a place once frequented by Beckham’s parents, Victoria and David.

On Monday, both Beckham and Peltz took to Instagram to share their experiences at Elton’s Belle Epoque villa, posting their photos just minutes apart to give followers a glimpse of their high-profile stay.

Elton John, along with his husband David Furnish and their sons, Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13, customarily spends the summer at the picturesque Castel Mont-Alban, which offers a commanding view over Nice from the French Riviera.

Nicola, donning a chic white minidress, captured a series of selfies amidst the garden’s serene backdrop, while Brooklyn frolicked playfully on the manicured lawns, adding a touch of youthful exuberance to their sun-drenched escape.

Instead of partaking in his family’s annual getaway on the £16million yacht, Brooklyn united with Elton.

Earlier in the day, Brooklyn and Nicola narrowly missed his parents as he stepped out for ice cream in St Tropez.

Posh and Becks were most recently seen on their yacht in St Tropez, 75 miles away from their son, before enjoying lunch at the Cherry Restaurant – just five minutes from the Barbarac ice-cream parlour where Brooklyn dined.

Christmas 2024 was the last time the Beckham clan were pictured with Brooklyn and Nicola before they lost all meaningful communication.

During his trip, David appeared deep in thought as he wrapped his arm around his beloved son Romeo.

Before arriving in St Tropez, Victoria and David visited different parts of the Balearic Islands with Romeo on their luxury yacht, Seven.

The Beckhams and Elton have been pals for more than 30 years, with David affectionately calling the musician ‘Uncle Elton’ after the pair became friends in his football heyday.

Yet Elton appears to be pledging an allegiance with Brooklyn and Nicola as they enjoyed a luncheon on the sundeck.

Victoria and David recently followed the World Cup around the US with Romeo and his girlfriend Kim Turnbull, 24, Harper, Cruz, 21, and his girlfriend Jackie Apostel, 30.

Despite living across the pond, Brooklyn has avoided all family outings amid their ongoing estrangement.

In January, Brooklyn released a scathing six-page statement denouncing his parents and declared he was no longer part of ‘Brand Beckham’.

Brooklyn also claimed David and Victoria had controlled him for much of his life, attempted to drive a wedge between him and Nicola and left him embarrassed when his mother danced ‘inappropriately’ with him during the first dance at his wedding.

He has not acknowledged any of his parents’ birthdays or milestones publicly since their rift began, around the time of David’s 50th celebrations, and failed to share a post for Father’s Day this year.

It was previously reported that Brooklyn was ‘furious’ that his parents had included him in a Father’s Day post and wants them to ‘leave him alone’.

Shortly before Christmas last year, Brooklyn blocked his parents on Instagram, while his lawyers later wrote to the Beckhams’ team requesting all communication be conducted through legal representatives.

The Daily Mail contacted Brooklyn’s representatives for comment at the time.

Earlier this year, Brooklyn was accused of selling his family out for a big sum following the release of his two-part DoorDash commercial.

Five months after declaring that he and his wife Nicola want privacy, Brooklyn was savaged by fans, who branded him ‘classless’ after he collaborated with the food delivery firm for the sponsored video.

In the teaser clip for the advert released on June 15, Brooklyn smirks and says: ‘You’re probably wondering why I’m watching the Fifa World Cup 2026 from home… It’s a long story.’

It has been taken as mocking parents David and Victoria with whom he no longer speaks – and profiting off their name, while friends of the Beckhams have said the pair are ‘devastated and inconsolable’ by the jibe.

Car Crashes into West Town Home: Baqueros Share Details

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — In the quiet pre-dawn hours of Sunday, Mallory and John Baquero lay asleep in their West Town residence, unaware that their home was moments away from an unexpected intrusion.

A sudden, thunderous crash erupted, jolting the couple awake. Their townhome trembled violently under the impact.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

John sprang into action, searching for tarp and other materials to patch up a sizable hole. A vehicle had careened into their ground floor, the driver apparently confusing the brake with the gas pedal, according to the Baqueros.

“The entire house just shook,” Mallory recalled emphatically. “I bolted out of bed, peered through our window, and couldn’t believe my eyes as I shouted, ‘A car has crashed into our house!'”

The couple’s first concern was for the driver. Fortunately, reports indicate they emerged from the crash unscathed.

“She seemed like an old woman on her way to church, dressed very nicely,” John said.

Mallory and John became concerned about the displaced bricks and the hole in their wall.

The couple has only lived there for a few months, and it is their first home. They are unsure what to do, but they say they expect the city to help them with the process so they can get the car removed.

And while the Baqueros say first responders and the alderman’s office have tried to be helpful, they were told that the car cannot be removed until there’s an inspection by the Buildings Department. They are starting to get impatient.

“We’re doing everything in our power to get this car out of our home. It’s dangerous for us, for the community,” Mallory said.

“It’s just mind-boggling that it’s taken this long,” John added.

ABC7 reached out to the city’s Buildings Department but did not immediately hear back. The Bancheros are hoping this story may prompt some action.

Francesca Hong Departs Restaurant Over Cultural Diversity Concerns

0

Francesca Hong, a Democratic candidate for governor in Wisconsin, recently recounted an unsettling experience at a Culver’s fast food restaurant where she felt an “anxiety attack” looming, which she attributed to the presence of “too many old white people.”

Hong shared her account of this anxiety-triggering incident in a 2019 post on X, a social media platform.

“I took a couple of bites from my child’s cheeseburger at a Culver’s in Black River Falls and then told him the ice cream was out. I primarily wanted to leave because I felt an anxiety attack was imminent,” Hong explained.

She commented that the restaurant was filled with “too many old white people who didn’t think we spoke English.”

Hong did not provide further detail on the remark about assumptions regarding language ability.

In response to the criticisms she received, Hong shared a post from 2020 in which she discussed Culver’s fried cheese curds.

“They are the perfect road curd. No other fried curd comes close. Only Culvers curds or fresh curds are appropriate for travel. For in person dining Culver’s curds are indeed, trash,” she said.

“I see that folks are digging up old tweets in an attempt to shift the narrative in this race. I stand by this statement, unequivocally. Their fries also leave much to be desired. The reuben, however, slaps,” she said in a subsequent post.

Hong has a history of upholding extremist positions, having once said that police exist to “uphold white supremacy.”

“Police exist to uphold white supremacy,” Hong wrote in 2021. “Defund then abolish. Reform can’t be an option.”

Speaking to Fox News last week, Hong distanced herself from those comments, adding that “people can evolve.”

“The governor cannot defund the police, and I won’t defund the police,” Hong said. “But I will invest in the things we know prevent crime.”

Quick Chair Exercises: Flatten Belly Pooch Fast After 65

0

Forget about hitting the floor: here are four chair-based exercises targeting belly fat for those over 65.

>

Working out with a chair doesn’t have to be synonymous with taking it easy. When used effectively, the humble chair can transform a cozy corner into a vigorous environment, engaging your core while boosting the intensity of your entire exercise regimen.

Tackling belly fat requires more than just engaging ab muscles. While core strengthening is vital, the real transformation arises from a combination of strength training, calorie-burning activities, regular movement, and unwavering commitment. That’s the central idea behind combining chair squats with seated core exercises in this plan.

In my experience, senior clients thrive on routines that challenge them appropriately without creating a rushed or disorganized atmosphere. A chair provides stability, allowing for a blend of standing and seated movements that generate enough exertion to create a sense of accomplishment.

Ensure the chair is stable, make those squats count, and allow the seated exercises to effectively engage your core, all without turning the workout into a sprint.

Chair Squat

Chair squats give this routine its full-body push. They train your legs and hips while your core helps keep your torso steady, which raises the overall effort of the workout. That makes the session feel more productive for body-composition goals than seated ab moves alone. Tap the chair lightly and stand tall with purpose on every rep.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy chair with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips back toward the chair.
  4. Lower until your hips lightly touch the seat.
  5. Press through your whole feet to stand tall.
  6. Repeat with a smooth, steady tempo.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Higher-chair squats, pause chair squats, slow-tempo chair squats.

Form Tip: Touch the chair without dropping into it, then stand all the way up.

5 Barefoot Exercises That Strengthen Your Feet Better Than Orthotics After 60

Seated Knee Tucks

Seated knee tucks bring your lower abs into the workout right away. Pulling your knees toward your chest asks your midsection to control the movement while the chair gives you a stable base. Keep the reps smooth and avoid using momentum. The better the control, the more useful the exercise becomes.

Muscles Trained: Abs, hip flexors, deep core.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit near the front edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Hold the sides of the chair lightly.
  3. Lean back slightly while keeping your chest lifted.
  4. Lift both knees toward your chest.
  5. Pause briefly at the top.
  6. Lower your feet with control and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Single-knee tucks, alternating knee tucks, slow-tempo knee tucks.

Form Tip: Keep your shoulders relaxed and let your abs control the knee lift.

Seated Flutter Kicks

Seated flutter kicks add a steady, controlled burn through the lower abs and hip flexors. The chair keeps you supported, but the legs still have to move with rhythm and control. Keep the kicks small at first. A shorter range often makes the movement feel cleaner and stronger.

Muscles Trained: Lower abs, hip flexors, quadriceps, deep core.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit near the front edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Hold the sides of the chair for support.
  3. Lean back slightly and brace your core.
  4. Extend your legs in front of you.
  5. Move your legs up and down in small alternating kicks.
  6. Continue for the full interval without letting your posture collapse.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Bent-knee flutter kicks, shorter-range flutter kicks, slow-tempo flutter kicks.

Form Tip: Keep the kicks small enough that your lower back stays comfortable.

The 7-Day Wall Sit Challenge That Restores Leg Strength After 60

Seated Scissor Kicks

Seated scissor kicks challenge your abs from a different angle. Your legs cross and open while your torso stays steady, which gives your midsection plenty to manage. Move at a pace you can control and keep the range comfortable. This exercise works best when it feels smooth, not frantic.

Muscles Trained: Abs, hip flexors, inner thighs, quadriceps, deep core.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit near the front edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Hold the sides of the chair lightly.
  3. Lean back slightly and brace your core.
  4. Extend your legs in front of you.
  5. Cross one leg over the other, then switch.
  6. Continue alternating for the full interval.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Bent-knee scissor kicks, shorter-range scissor kicks, slow-tempo scissor kicks.

Form Tip: Keep your chest lifted and shorten the range if your hips or lower back start taking over.

How to Use Chair Exercises to Flatten Belly Pooch After 65

Use these four exercises as a circuit. Complete one set of each move in order, rest for 60 to 90 seconds, then repeat for two to three total rounds.

  • Start with the chair squat: The bigger movement raises the intensity early and gives the routine more total-body effort.
  • Keep the ab moves controlled: Knee tucks, flutter kicks, and scissor kicks work best when the legs move smoothly, and the torso stays steady.
  • Shorten the range when needed: Smaller reps can still be effective, especially when they help you stay in control.
  • Make the circuit repeatable: Leave a little energy in the tank so you can come back to the routine a few days each week.
  • Pair it with daily movement: Walks and regular activity help support the body-composition changes this routine is built around.

A chair routine can give your abs direct work while still making the session feel active. Keep the squats strong, control the seated core moves, and let consistent effort support a firmer midsection over time.

73-Year-Old Keiri Embarks on Her Fifth Career, Joining the Rising Wave of Lifetime Achievers

0

Once, it was a common aspiration: work diligently, retire at 60. Today, however, an increasing number of Australians continue to be employed well into their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. “Insight” explores the experiences of those who choose to keep working, those who need to, and examines the implications of extending one’s career. Catch the episode “Working Later in Life” on Tuesday at 8.30 pm on SBS or SBS On Demand.

Keiri Easdown, who retired from her career as a professional dancer at 45 due to its physical intensity, never anticipated trying her hand at four additional careers in the ensuing decades.

“The transition came as quite the shock,” Easdown reveals to Insight. “Dance defined me; it was the core of my identity.”

Faced with the end of her demanding career, which left her little in terms of savings, Easdown, a single mother, had no choice but to retrain for new opportunities to provide for her children.

“Whatever I earned primarily went towards household expenses and supporting my children,” she explains.

Since leaving behind her dance career, the 73-year-old has pivoted careers upwards of four times.

She’s been an entertainment director at Gold Coast theme park Dreamworld, did some time in retail and corporate for a whitegoods company, and worked as a cleaner, before that became too physically taxing in her mid-60s.

On average, Australians plan to retire between their 65th and 66th birthdays, according to data released in 2024 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

But Keiri, who has been working as a teacher aide at the school her daughter and son-in-law teach at since her late 60s, says she needs to keep working.

“The money is absolutely critical,” she says.

“I have very little in superannuation. As a dancer, we didn’t earn much. We lived hand to mouth.”

Women are working later

The average age of the 156,000 people who retired in the 2024-2025 financial year was 63.8, according to the ABS. Their exit from the workforce brought the nation’s total number of retirees (aged 45 years and over) to 4.5 million.

The 2025 Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey conducted by the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Institute found that, even though women are still retiring slightly earlier than men (a year on average), they are staying in the workforce longer than they once did.

WORKING LATER IN LIFE DATAVIS.png

In 2003, 69.5 per cent of women and 48.5 per cent of men in the 60-64 age group were retired. Twenty years later, these figures had dropped to 40.8 per cent and 27.4 per cent, respectively.

The research also found that, with comparatively lower superannuation than men, women were more likely to need to remain in the workforce longer to achieve financial security for retirement.

A sliding scale for the age pension?

Gary Thomas, a 57-year-old electrician, would love to retire soon but says he needs to keep working for financial security — despite his body being “worn”.

He has considered a less physical role but says he can’t afford to make the switch; he and his wife have a mortgage and want to help their three sons get into the housing market.

“People often recommend: ‘Oh, you can work at a hardware store.’ But I’d make a third of what I make now, and they’d give me maybe 25 hours a week,” he says.

Gary doesn’t see himself retiring soon but wishes he could be retrained.

“It would be good if we had [government] training programs — options where people could retrain to do something else,” he says.

The electrician, who is based in Kangaroo Valley in regional NSW, thinks the government should introduce ways to assist those wanting to retire before 67, which is when someone can become eligible for the age pension.

“Maybe there could be a sort of a sliding scale.

“[For example], I can’t work six days a week anymore so I’ve slowed down to five, but maybe I could slow down to three. I could work longer, but I could get a partial pension or partially tap into my superannuation now — as opposed to having to wait.”

Workplace longevity

The age pension is the most common main source of income for Australian retirees, according to a 2025 ABS report.

Jo Earl, honorary professor of psychology at UNSW, has spent the last 20 years studying what helps improve people’s retirement planning and predict the adjustments they may have to make to these plans.

She suggests the pension eligibility age, which rose from 65 to 67 in 2023, is a reason that some people continue working later. She also supports lowering the pension age for blue-collar workers.

“I think we’ve heard good arguments for making the pension relatable back to workplace longevity.”

“While we’re waiting for that to happen, people are trying to do workarounds. They’re working part-time, or they’re reducing their hours, or the work’s being adjusted, or there’s job redesign and that helps to a certain extent.”

She says retraining later in life is a good option for many — especially if they can do it before their planned retirement date.

“We often start looking at those retraining options in the face of poor health; so, I’d be in favour of doing that retraining much earlier in anticipation,” Earl says.

“Maybe starting 10 years back from that potential retirement date, because we must know from the data that we’ve got, about when people are leaving those workplaces for physical and psychological reasons.”

‘Why should I retire?’

Dougall Blanch, 70, is still working and has a fear of retiring, which he believes comes from his parents dying around what was typically considered ‘retirement age’.

“My father had to retire at 60 and died at 59 and 11 months. And then my mother had to retire at 65, and she died one month before mandatory retirement.

“I’m scarred by it all — I just was scared of retirement.”

Dougall and his wife Di, who live in regional NSW, opened their first confectionery shop specialising in fudge four decades ago.

“It was seven days a week, nine till five. And then on weekends you would do nine till 9.30pm, 10 o’clock; and then school holidays, would do nine till 10 o’clock at night,” he says.

Finding the long hours too taxing while raising their three children, they sold their shop and created a fudge franchise around Australia and New Zealand. The couple then opened another shop in 2012, which grew to have fourteen staff and the same long hours.

Dougall says it all became too much, and he figured out he needed to retire to something, not from something. He soon stumbled across the answer.

“A food trailer — I’m selling fudge from a van now about three days a week,” he says.

I’m fit and healthy and I actually love what I do, so why should I retire?

Dougall

Dougall feels he’s left the fast lane he was in for 50 years and is now in the middle lane: the semi-retirement lane.

“I’m happy as happy now. I’ve found my place …

“I’m fit and healthy and I actually love what I do, so why should I retire?”

Staying ‘relevant’

Like Dougall, Susan Goodsell planned to take a bit of a step back from work, but is finding it hard.

“Every Christmas I make the same pledge: I will not be practising after this,” the 77-year-old lawyer says.

“Every new year, I’m still at the desk.”

She has been running her Sydney legal practice for more than four decades, and she asked her daughter Kara Goodsell to join the practice 15 years ago.

She initially wanted Kara to step up so she could take a step back from the business but has found it difficult to release her clients to her daughter.

“I get very attached to my clients — probably too much — but it keeps me occupied and … doing something that I really like doing.”

Kara, 55, loves that her mum still works and sees it as “mutually beneficial”.

“[Mum] gets the benefits of mental activity and the agility; she stays relevant; she stays needed … She’s put the humanity over the business side of things.”

“For me, I get the benefit of her wisdom, her 45 years in practice … her steadiness and her direction, as well as her clients — I get the financial benefit of that as well.”

Susan believes there is a “lot of truth” to the adage “as you age, you become invisible”.

“And for me, to stay working allows me to hold on to my individuality and my connection with society in general.”

‘I have to be earning money to feel worthwhile’

Like Susan, Keiri loves her work. At 73 years old, she has found purpose and joy as a teacher aide in her fifth career pivot.

“I work with students with special needs and I feel like I’m making a difference,” she says.

“Without teacher aides, a lot of the teachers would struggle to be able to teach … The more I work, the more I realise I enjoy it; it’s good for my soul.”

Keiri is trying to save as much as she can before retiring for good and is unsure whether she will access the age pension.

But apart from the financial aspect, there’s another reason Keiri doesn’t see herself stopping work anytime soon.

“I have to be earning money to feel worthwhile to myself.

“It is just who I am.”
