In a significant development in the battle against destructive wildfires in Washington, a local man has been apprehended on charges of first-degree arson. The suspect is linked to the Old Trails Fire, a devastating blaze responsible for obliterating hundreds of structures and compelling mass evacuations in the Spokane region, law enforcement disclosed.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci, was arrested following a collaborative effort between detectives from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and investigators from the Washington Department of Natural Resources. Their findings provided sufficient grounds for his arrest, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

Crucial tips from the public, combined with vital information from responding Airway Heights officers and Spokane County deputies, were instrumental in zeroing in on Farinacci, the sheriff’s office reported.

Authorities have revealed that Farinacci is a convicted felon originally from Arizona. However, they noted that his criminal record does not include any fire-related offenses.

Officials clarified that Farinacci currently has no known ties to two other significant fires raging in the vicinity, specifically the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires.

“We will be looking into any other crimes Mr. Farinacci may have committed in the past,” Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said during a news briefing.

Nowels said first-degree arson was the charge supported by probable cause at that stage of the investigation and cautioned that the case could change as authorities gathered additional evidence.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Farinacci and a search warrant for his residence in the 2800 block of West Elliott Drive, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies served the warrant Monday and arrested Farinacci without incident. Authorities said detectives found a butane lighter and waterproof matches while detaining and searching him.

Farinacci was booked into the Spokane County Jail and was being held on $1 million bond.

The Old Trails Fire was first reported Saturday near North Old Trails Road and West Euclid Road. It became the largest of three destructive fires burning around Spokane and remained uncontained Monday, according to authorities and wire reports.

The three fires had collectively destroyed at least 700 structures and prompted evacuation orders affecting approximately 67,000 people as of Monday, according to The Associated Press. More than 1,000 firefighters were battling the blazes.

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson declared a statewide wildfire emergency Saturday amid drought, unusually high temperatures and strong winds. The declaration also imposed a statewide prohibition on most outdoor and agricultural burning through Sept. 30.

Dramatic dashboard camera footage recently released by the Florida Highway Patrol shows the heart-stopping moments when a state trooper raced toward a street takeover that had brought traffic on Interstate 75 to a standstill. As the trooper navigated through a sea of halted vehicles, the high-speed chase that followed hit speeds of 140 mph, according to authorities.

The chase began with an urgency echoed by flashing emergency lights and blaring sirens. The trooper sped along the interstate, quickly approaching a chaotic scene where vehicles blocked all northbound lanes near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa, shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Upon arrival, the dashcam captured pandemonium as people darted between cars, while others scrambled to get back into their vehicles, adding to the commotion.

With determination, the trooper carefully maneuvered among the clusters of cars before setting his sights on a green BMW, the driver of which was later identified as 25-year-old Yulian Lugo, who was attempting to flee the scene.

Officials reported that Lugo accelerated to an alarming speed of around 140 mph—double the speed limit—before making a swift exit off the interstate, intensifying the pursuit.

The dashcam then showed the trooper following him into what appeared to be a residential neighborhood, where Lugo eventually pulled over without further incident.

The trooper ordered Lugo out of the BMW before placing him in handcuffs.

Moments later, two passengers stepped out before sitting on the hood of the patrol vehicle as the trooper secured the scene.

Lugo was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover, both felony offenses, authorities said.

Three passengers – a 24-year-old and two 18-year-olds – were also ultimately arrested, and each was charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All four were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.

Investigators said the incident began around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when hundreds of vehicles blocked all northbound lanes of I-75 while participants allegedly performed burnouts and other stunts in the middle of the interstate.

Investigators alleged Lugo fled the scene as many of the vehicles dispersed when law enforcement arrived, triggering the pursuit shown in the newly released dashcam footage.

The I-75 incident marked the latest in a series of takeover-related events that have drawn increased attention from Florida law enforcement this summer.

In June, the St. Augustine Beach Police Department said it thwarted a planned “teen takeover” before it began after investigators used electronic monitoring to identify plans circulating online.

Earlier this year, Orlando police also released video showing hundreds of riders on e-bikes swarming downtown streets, running red lights, blocking traffic and delaying an ambulance. Officers said the group created a significant public safety hazard and vowed to continue cracking down on similar incidents.

A brave Idaho resident bravely recounted an intense confrontation with a shooter who tragically took the lives of three people and injured seven others. This hero described how the gunman faltered upon realizing he was facing return fire.

Jordan Salinas, 35, was en route to a horseback riding date with his girlfriend on a Saturday afternoon. As he arrived at the newly opened In-N-Out parking lot in Twin Falls, chaos ensued around the same time that 24-year-old Chad Williams began his attack using an AK-style rifle, according to police reports.

Salinas noticed the panic as people fled in terror. It quickly became evident to him that a shooter was causing the mayhem, he shared with the Idaho Statesman.

His instincts kicked in as he reacted swiftly to the threat. Salinas pulled out his semi-automatic pistol from a shoulder holster and courageously moved toward the gunfire to confront Williams.

During an interview with ABC News, Salinas recalled how the assailant initially seemed unnervingly at ease while targeting unsuspecting individuals. However, the shooter’s confidence noticeably wavered once Salinas began to fire back.

‘As soon as some rounds started coming at him, everything changed immediately. All that bravado he had immediately crumbled,’ Salinas told the outlet. 

An unidentified off-duty police officer also fired at Williams, and he and Salinas’s decisive actions likely saved the lives of others, Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said on Sunday.

‘We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen and their heroic action to stop this incident,’ the police chief said during a press conference on Sunday. 

‘We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties.’

Williams died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after turning the weapon on himself. Authorities are ‘confident’ he acted alone, Hicks said, but a motive for the shooting remains unclear. 

On Sunday evening, Salinas took to Facebook to talk about the previous ‘overwhelming’ 24 hours.

‘I want to sincerely thank my family, friends, and everyone who has reached out with messages, prayers, and support… they mean more to me than I can put into words,’ he said.

‘My heart remains with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by yesterday’s tragedy. Thank you for continuing to keep them in your thoughts and prayers,’ Salinas continued.

He further recalled to the Idaho Statesman that the shooter ‘did not like when bullets started firing both ways.’

Salinas, a healthcare worker and full-time caregiver for his disabled brother, told the outlet that he began self-defense training five years ago after the 2021 shooting at the Boise Towne Square Mall that left two dead and four others injured. 

He said that the tragedy made him realize that gunmen often go after ‘soft targets’ – people like his wheelchair-bound brother and the aide by his side. 

Salinas practices shooting on the weekends and does his own training in the desert. Until Sunday, he had never pointed his gun at a human and never thought he would have to, he shared. 

Two of the three people who were killed in Saturday’s shooting have been identified by loved ones as In-N-Out employee Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California, and Christopher Claunch, 59, an employee at Renaissance Ranch Recovery Center.

Of the seven who were injured, two were taken to the hospital and later released. Three others were stable after the shooting, and the remaining two have been left in critical condition.

Claunch’s sister, Kimberly Castaneda, told the New York Times that her brother had been sober for two years after struggling with alcoholism. 

She reminisced about spending time with him during the Fourth of July holiday and how she enjoyed his carefree attitude.

‘My silly brother took my headband that I was wearing with little tin wheels on it… and he sat with those things on like it was just no big deal,’ she told the Times.

‘He was always being a goofball.’

Claunch was from California but lived in Idaho for about three decades, Castaneda said.

So when an In-N-Out opened up in the state, he was thrilled to stop by and get the Pacific Coast classic take-out, she shared.

Garibay’s mother, Sabrina Garibay, changed her profile picture to an image of the two after the shooting, and loved ones commented their condolences.

‘Ashley you are so beautiful. You will be missed so much. I remember when you were baby and you to come stay with me so mom could go to work,’ one family member commented.

‘You have become a beautiful young lady. Rest in paradise.’

In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder described Garibay as a ‘beautiful’ associate who was working at the drive-thru.

‘My heart is broken, my chest is heavy, my eyes burn from the tears I’ve shed,’ Snyder said in a statement shared on Sunday.

‘We lost one of our beautiful Associates tonight. She was taking care of our most important asset – our Customers, and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn’t value the lives of others or his own.’

‘He shot both on our property and off, and ended his life shortly after he took the precious lives of our Associate and Customers, innocent people who never saw it coming,’ Snyder added.

Authorities are investigating a tragic incident where a married couple was discovered lifeless in their North Carolina residence, suspected to be a case of murder-suicide.

On Thursday, Stephen Larnell Willetts and his wife Tracey Parker Willetts were both found shot dead inside their home in Wilmington, North Carolina.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, collected evidence suggests this event was a murder-suicide, with indications pointing to the wife shooting her husband before ending her own life.

Deputies had initially arrived at the scene following an emergency call early Thursday morning.

One of the Willetts’ smartwatches “detected a fall and automatically called 911 after the alarm was not canceled, prompting the emergency response,” WWAY reported.

According to their Facebook profiles, it appears the couple had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Wednesday.

The couple appeared to be avid paddleboarders, as depicted in several photos posted to social media, and was “well known in the Wrightsville Beach paddleboarding community,” WWAY reported.

A neighbor told WECT that Stephen Willetts was “retired Army.”

A man named Fuller Royal, who said he was Tracey Willetts’ second cousin, made a post to social media saying that Stephen was a lifelong friend, and a devoted EMT.

According to the post, the Willettses lost their two sons within a year of each other between the years of 2013 and 2014.

Royal wrote, “I can’t begin to imagine how much that hurt and what they went through. I pray they are reunited with their boys and that everyone is whole, safe and at peace. God Bless them all.”

The investigation is active and ongoing, the sheriff’s office says.
