Endings to romantic relationships are difficult, but rarely do they result in imprisonment.
Such was the unfortunate fate of California graduate student Michelle Hadley, whose life took a drastic turn when her ex-boyfriend, former U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz, and his new spouse Angela Diaz orchestrated a plan to falsely incriminate her in a twisted rape fantasy conspiracy.
Michelle’s ordeal, a central focus of Netflix’s A Toxic Love Story, saw her spending 88 harrowing days in jail amidst charges so severe they could have led to a life sentence. Her innocence was only proven after an investigation revealed she had been the victim of a setup, a situation the then-Orange County District Attorney, Tony Rackauckas, denounced as a “nightmare.”
In a public statement in January 2017, Rackauckas emphasized, “It should be made clear in the media and in cyberspace that Ms. Hadley is an innocent victim of a diabolical scheme.”
Initially, Angela Diaz was the sole perpetrator held accountable for the malicious entrapment in 2017. However, subsequent federal investigations unveiled Ian Diaz’s pivotal role in the sordid affair, culminating in his conviction, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice.

How Did Michelle Hadley and Ian Diaz Meet?
When Michelle met Ian online in 2013, it seemed like a fairytale romance. The couple even had their first date at Disneyland.
“I grew up watching all of the Disney princess shows on TV and I really bought into it,” Michelle explained in A Toxic Love Story. “That if you were a nice girl, you got your prince at the end.”
As a federal U.S. Marshal, Ian seemed like the perfect catch.
“Ian was attentive, he was sweet. He was thoughtful,” Michelle remembered. “I started seeing him as a really good option for a long term relationship.”
The couple purchased a condo together in downtown Anaheim, with Michelle clearing out her savings to cover the down payment.
But two years into the romance, the relationship fell apart. While Ian stayed in the condo, Michelle moved back in with her parents, leaving the fate of their joint investment up in the air, according to the documentary.
“In September 2015, Ms. Hadley and John Doe argued over email and text messages about the status of their relationship and financial issues surrounding their condo,” Rackauckas explained in his 2017 remarks, which didn’t reference Ian by name. “Some of Ms. Hadley’s emails contained accusations toward Doe, descriptions of events in their relationship and included language with religious overtones. Ms. Hadley and Doe then ended contact with each other in the Fall of 2015.”
Who is Angela Diaz?
Months later, Ian began a new romance with Angela, then known as Angela Connell, after the two met at a Starbucks in Anaheim.
“We just hit it off. And so, she moved into my condo,” Ian told police in an interview obtained by the documentary. “The smile alone, I mean the smile was killer. She was just a sweetheart.”
Within months, the couple married and Angela allegedly told Ian she was pregnant with twins, Rackauckas said.
Angela Diaz and Ian Diaz Report Threatening Emails to Police
But in May 2016, the couple reported that they were receiving disturbing and threatening emails from someone known as “Lilithistruth,” an apparent reference to the biblical figure Lilith who was Adam’s first wife. In the bible, Lilith had been banished from the garden of Eden after she refused to submit to her husband and later had an affair with Satan.
On June 1, the pair reported the threatening messages to police, according to a lawsuit later filed on Michelle’s behalf.
Though the initial emails were characterized as warnings to Angela, the lawsuit noted that “the e-mails then, escalated by threatening to kill, kidnap, rape, and torture Angela Diaz.”
“Watch your back tonight and this week,” one message read, per the lawsuit, while another warned, “I hope you are scared of death tomorrow.”
The messages included graphic photos of women being raped and kidnapped.
According to Rackauckas, the messages had “language very similar” to those Michelle had written in the Fall of 2015, leading authorities to believe she may have been behind the new messages.
Michelle Hadley Falsely Accused of Orchestrating Rape Fantasy Plot
The threats took a terrifying turn on June 13, 2016 when it seemed as though Michelle responded to an ad on Craigslist from a man looking for a “rape fantasy” providing Angela’s name, photographs and inviting the man to Angela’s house, writing “Come find me,” according to the documentary.
Angela reported the development to police that same day, prosecutors said.
“Her story was bolstered by the fact that law enforcement contacted and intercepted some of these men near Diaz residence who admitted to responding to the Craigslist ad,” Rackauckas said, “and believed they were being invited to engage in a consensual encounter with Diaz.”
Then, on June 24, a tearful Angela told police that a man had attempted to rape her in the condo of her garage, the prosecutor said.
“She is accused of crying and meeting the police with her shirt ripped and with visible redness to her neck and breast area,” he added. “She is accused of claiming to APD that a man attempted to rape her.”
What Charges Was Michelle Hadley Facing?
Michelle was arrested that same day. Though she was initially able to post bond, she was taken back into custody the following month and held on a much steeper $1 million bond after the alleged threats and emails continued.
“Due to the seriousness of the threats, the alleged attack on Diaz in her garage, the escalation in both the frequency and nature of the threats, and yet another man arriving at the Diaz residence to engage in a rape fantasy encounter, law enforcement believed a serious threat to public safety existed,” Rackauckas explained. “Based on the fact that the available evidence pointed only to Ms. Hadley, an arrest warrant was issued and charges were filed against her.”
Michelle was facing charges of stalking with a restraining order, stalking, criminal threats, attempted rape, assault with the intent to commit rape during a residential burglary, violating a protective order and a crime-bail-crime enhancement, prosecutors said.
If convicted, she could have been facing life in prison.
Angela Diaz Accused of Faking Emails, Framing Michelle Hadley
Yet, Rackauckas said the narrative began to change after police began looking into the IP addresses connected to the messages and traced them back to Angela.
As he explained, “Our joint investigation eventually determined that the true origins of these emails and rape fantasy solicitations were not Ms. Hadley, but they originated from the condo shared by John Doe and [Angela] Diaz, Diaz’s cell phone, and Diaz’s father’s home in Arizona.”
Police also discovered that in the past, Angela had pretended to fake cervical cancer, posed as an attorney and even faked her pregnancy, the prosecutor said.
Given the development, after spending 88 days in jail, Michelle was released.
“Freedom was so sweet at that point,” she told Netflix, “because, oh man, I mean, you don’t appreciate it, until you’ve lost it.”
What Happened to Angela Diaz?
Angela ultimately pled guilty to forgery, false imprisonment, kidnapping and falsely reporting a crime in 2017 and was sentenced to five years in prison, according the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Ian had his marriage annulled that same year after placing all the blame for the scheme on Angela, according to interviews with police replayed in the documentary.
Mary Xjimenez, an information officer for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, told Oxygen that Angela was released from prison on July 19, 2020 and was discharged from parole the following year.
Ian Diaz Linked to Plot to Frame Ex Michelle Hadley
But that wasn’t the end of the story. As Department of Justice Special Agent Jason Higley explained in the Netflix documentary, given that Ian was a U.S. Marshal, the Department of Justice also wanted to review the case.
After reviewing Ian’s statements to police and the body camera footage, Higley began to suspect that Ian had been involved in the plot.
“In addition to those recordings there were a few things in the body camera footage that jumped out to me,” he explained. “There is a scene where Ian leaves the living room while Angela is talking to the police, Ian is clearly listening to what Angela is saying and provides her information from the side. It sounds to me as if Ian is trying to coach Angela.”
He also noticed the extreme animosity Ian seemed to have for his ex.
Ian told officers at one point, “She needs to be in f–king cuffs and in a padded room,” according to body camera footage replayed in the documentary.
After deciphering the body cam footage and digital evidence linked to Ian’s own email account and work devices, investigators concluded that Ian had masterminded the plan, mimicking language from Michelle’s original emails to frame her and then continued to escalate the incidents until she was arrested.
“in my view, Angela Connell was a perfect partner because she craved empathy. Angela loved portraying herself as a victim,” Higley explained. “And Ian exploited that.”
Federal prosecutors later argued that Ian had orchestrated the scheme to get Hadley to walk away from the condo they owned, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Ian was arrested in May 2021.
What Happened to Ian Diaz?
In March 2023, Ian was convicted of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury and obstructing a federal proceeding, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Yesterday’s verdict is the culmination of unrelenting investigative work that began in 2017 when the Cyber Investigations Office initiated this case,” Special Agent in Charge Harry A. Lidsky of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (DOJ-OIG) Cyber Investigations Office noted in the release. “Diaz’s egregious actions and lies to law enforcement stripped a woman of her freedom and liberty. This kind of stalking, harassment, and obstruction is unconscionable, and yesterday, the jury held Diaz accountable for his crimes.”
He was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison, authorities said.
Where is Michelle Hadley Now?
The same day Ian was convicted, Michelle gave birth to a daughter, signaling a new chapter in her life.
“My life has been filled by strange, often symbolic, and sometimes beautiful coincidences like this,” she said at the time in a statement to NBC News. “My daughter represents my rainbow after a very long storm, and my heart has never felt so full.”
Michelle sued the Anaheim Police Department for damages and received an undisclosed settlement in 2021. Before the settlement, attorneys for the city had argued at the time that they probable cause to believe Hadley was responsible for the crimes, per Courthouse News Service.
Michelle shared in A Toxic Love Story that she has started to rebuild her life. According to her, she is going back to school and has returned to work.
“Raising this beautiful girl is my fairy tale ending,” she said. “I think it is happily ever after. I’m not a princess, but I get to be the hero in my own story.”
