Urgent Alert: Taylor Farms Lettuce Recall Spreads to 27 States Due to Cyclosporiasis Fears

0

In a proactive measure to protect public health, Taylor Fresh Foods, a prominent fruit and vegetable producer, has decided to voluntarily withdraw all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. This decision comes amid a spreading cyclosporiasis outbreak that has so far affected over 1,600 individuals nationwide.

A recall notice from the Food and Drug Administration, issued on Saturday, highlights that the shredded lettuce in question was distributed across 27 states between June 29 and July 16. The states impacted include Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Taylor Fresh Foods elaborated in the notice, stating, “We are actively removing the implicated products. The company has stopped receiving product from the implicated lot, suspended distribution of the iceberg lettuce from Central Mexico, notified our customers, and we are continuing to work with the FDA, CDC, and state authorities.”

The recall encompasses various products, including Marketside-brand items available at certain Walmart stores. Additionally, some of these now-recalled products were sent to food service clients, highlighting the breadth of the distribution.

As of Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has indicated that this multistate outbreak remains a subject of investigation. The issue has now been traced back to shredded iceberg lettuce used at select Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that its traceback investigation had identified a single supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico that was used at those Taco Bell locations.

In a statement, Taco Bell said it had taken “immediate action to voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states” following “ongoing conversations with public health officials.”

“We believe public health is a shared responsibility among restaurants, their suppliers, and authorities, and we are proud to have consistently acted quickly and proactively to protect our guests,” the statement read in part. “Taco Bell has taken precautionary action, and we encourage all relevant restaurants, retailers, and foodservice operators to do the same.”

The CDC and FDA said they are also investigating other cyclosporiasis illnesses that may be unrelated to the lettuce supplied to Taco Bell restaurants, “in collaboration with state and local partners.” Overall, there have been more than 1,644 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across the country, with 94 hospitalizations and no reported deaths so far.

Cyclosporiasis cases happen every year, but there have been more reported this year than in general.

In a statement to ABC News on Friday, Taylor Fresh Foods said in part, “While the FDA traceback is indicating a specific independent farm, which represents less than 1% of the U.S.’s iceberg lettuce supply, as the potential source of the outbreak, we have removed all iceberg lettuce from the region indefinitely.”

Taylor Farms, a subsidiary of Taylor Fresh Foods, supplies fruits and vegetables to many restaurants and grocery stores throughout the U.S., sourcing and processing the food

King Appoints New Leader: Burnham Steps Up as Starmer Withdraws

0

In the political spotlight today, Andy Burnham acknowledged the need for improvement within the Labour Government following his appointment as Prime Minister in succession to Keir Starmer.

Standing before a cheering crowd of aides and fervent supporters at Downing Street, the newly appointed leader hinted at a potential shift towards more progressive policies during his speech.

Burnham reinforced his belief that Britain’s path has been misaligned since the Thatcher era, as he laid out his vision for stronger public control of services and the reindustrialisation of the nation through a comprehensive 10-year strategy.

He emphasized that his immediate directive would focus on eradicating homelessness, while also teasing that an announcement regarding support for living expenses would be made the following day, though he withheld specific details.

This address followed his formal invitation to form a government from the King during an audience at Buckingham Palace, an event where he was notably accompanied by his wife, Marie-France van Heel.

But the former Greater Manchester Mayor is already facing a crucial moment as he names his Cabinet this afternoon.

The Labour Left is still clamouring for Ed Miliband to be made Chancellor, despite alarm from businesses and moderates. Markets have been calmer following speculation that Shabana Mahmood will get the role instead, but any surprises could prompt a panicky response.

Meanwhile, the fates of big beasts such as Angela Rayner, Wes Streeting and Yvette Cooper are due to be decided.

Resignations have begun, with prisons minister Lord Timpson announcing he is going alongside Sir Keir.

In his speech, Mr Burnham said: ‘Later this year I will bring forward a new plan for Britain, a 10-year plan laying out a path from where we are now to where I believe we all want Britain to be, wherever we’re coming from, whatever party we support.

‘But I can do something to give people some breathing space now, some help with the cost of living.

‘And I will set out some of those measures starting tomorrow, including how we pay for them.’

On another momentous day in UK politics:

  • Mr Burnham has revealed his Alzheimer’s-hit father does not know he is going to be PM, as he vows to overhaul social care;
  • Eco-tycoon Dale Vince was spotted in Downing Street, amid confusion over whether the Government will allow more drilling in the North Sea;
  • The new PM has hinted at an earlier end to the freeze on the basic rate tax threshold, without saying how it would be funded;
  • Mr Burnham will become the first openly Catholic PM, with work-arounds put in place to protect the Church of England;
  • Loudspeakers have been banned near Downing Street today after protesters blighted Sir Keir’s speech announcing his resignation.

Keir Starmer is giving a farewell address outside the famous black door of No10, just two years after winning an extraordinary election landslide

The constitutional changeover came after Sir Keir used a farewell address outside No10 to insist he has not been a failure – despite only surviving two years following a huge election victory.

Sir Keir said he was ‘closing the book on my time’, saying ‘my work is done’ and the country is ‘stronger’. He insisted Mr Burnham – who orchestrated a coup to secure the leadership – would have his ‘full support’.

‘I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything we have achieved,’ he said, thanking wife Victoria and his family.

Close Cabinet allies including David Lammy and Rachel Reeves had gathered with hundreds of aides in a sunny Downing Street to watch Sir Keir say goodbye. London Mayor Sadiq Khan was also present for the emotional moment.

In his valedictory statement , Sir Keir said: ‘I am about to visit His Majesty The King to offer my resignation and close the book on my time as Prime Minister.

‘My work is done. In six and a half years, I took our party from a historic defeat in 2019, changed it so it was fit to face the country and won a landslide general election victory in 2024.

‘Since then, it has been the privilege of my life to serve you and this great country as Prime Minister, and I am confident that Britain is now stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.

‘Our economy is stronger. Our public services are on the up, with the biggest fall in waiting times for 17 years. Children are being lifted out of poverty every single day.

‘Immigration is down significantly. Our defence and security are on a far stronger footing and our international reputation is greatly enhanced.’

The handover comes barely a month after Mr Burnham returned to Westminster following his victory in the Makerfield by-election.

He has been installed by Labour MPs in a ‘coronation’, without a formal vote by activists – or having to spell out any policies.

Among the vague commitments laid out by the incoming PM so far are devolving power away from Westminster.

He has announced he will scrap Sir Keir’s flagship digital ID programme to focus money and attention on the cost of living.

In an interview with The Times, Mr Burnham said he had already spoken to the Treasury about his planned announcements and stressed the importance of making people ‘feel better’.

Adding that complaints about frozen tax thresholds had been ‘lodged in his mind’ since the Makerfield contest, he said: ‘So when people, they’re just characterising me as a tax raiser, well again, it’s never that simplistic is it? The breathing space point is a really serious one.’

The comments raise more questions about how Mr Burnham will pay for giveaways, after he backed a ‘land tax’ and harked back to the 1970s condemning Thatcherite reforms.

But the weekend was dominated by bungled briefing over whether the new Government will allow new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

The leader’s team has now confirmed he will stick to Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which promised not to issue new licences.

Instead he could merely allow expanded drilling at the Rosebank and Jackdaw sites – something that was being considered by Sir Keir’s administration.

That could bode badly for Mr Burnham’s relations with Donald Trump, who yesterday jubilantly hailed more drilling as a way of stopping Britain being a ‘poverty stricken disaster’.

Mr Burnham also faces a decision on whether to temporarily nationalise Thames Water as the firm struggles with a £20billion debt pile.

He has already expressed support for greater public control of essential services, and Thames Water’s main creditors have said they are willing to discuss the issue with his new ministers in an effort to agree a rescue deal and avoid the business falling into a so-called ‘special administration regime’.

Another priority is likely to be reforming social care, which he has said is something he wishes to ‘expend political capital’ on.

Kemi Badenoch warned Mr Burnham he will have to cut spending instead of increasing taxes

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has urged Mr Burnham to engage other parties to solve the ‘social care crisis’, calling for guaranteed rights for family carers, a universal safety net and protection against ‘catastrophic costs’.

Kemi Badenoch has also written to Mr Burnham, saying her party will work with him to cut the welfare bill and calling for him to rule out tax rises and back new oil and gas drilling.

Mrs Badenoch told Mr Burnham she would ‘never shirk’ from holding him to account, adding: ‘You will enter office without having set out a clear plan on any of the issues facing our country.

‘You have refused calls to come to Parliament for questions from MPs, and you have not submitted yourself to serious media scrutiny. This is not a promising start.’

Sophie Turner Sparks Excitement with New Romance: Meet Peregrine Pearson

Sophie Turner has officially put to rest any rumors by confirming her romance with Peregrine Pearson, a British aristocrat. The two were seen together again this week, leaving little doubt about their budding relationship.

The former Game Of Thrones star, aged 27, is currently navigating a divorce from Joe Jonas. Recently, Turner was captured sharing a passionate kiss with Peregrine, the heir to a media empire, whose family’s wealth exceeds an impressive £224 million.

Rumors about Sophie’s new relationship with Peregrine—known as Perry among friends—first started swirling after they were seen kissing in October. This public display of affection hinted that she had moved forward after her split from Joe Jonas, 34, of the Jonas Brothers.

Peregrine Pearson holds the title of the eldest son and heir to Michael Pearson, the 4th Viscount Cowdray. Michael Pearson, a former film producer, controls a significant portion of the influential Pearson media empire.

Although Sophie Turner herself boasts a formidable net worth of £10 million, it’s modest compared to the financial legacy of Peregrine’s family.

Sophie was offered the role of Sansa Stark in Game Of Thrones age 13 and has since  appeared in many films and campaigns, enabling her to amass her own fortune.

The mother-of-two’s upbringing is comparatively modest as the daughter of Sally and Andrew Turner, who worked as a nursery school teacher and pallet distribution company respectively.

The Turners relocated to Chesterton, Warwickshire, when she was two years old, where she spent most of her childhood.

Sophie went to Warwick Prep School until the age of 11, before attending The King’s High School for Girls, which currently costs between £7,250 and £8,630 per term.

Sophie and Peregrine’s latest PDA-packed display suggests they are giving the romance a shot, as they looked smitten with each other during the evening stroll on Thursday.

Peregrine, 29, has also recently been through his own break-up, after splitting from King Charles’s goddaughter, Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Denmark.

But it appears that the new couple have found solace in each other following their respective splits, as their relationship continues to heat up.

During the romantic walk, Sophie and Peregrine couldn’t keep their hands off each other as they stopped on several occasions for hugs and kisses.

Sophie was wrapped up in a grey hoodie and black coat, while she also sported a green beanie hat and a pair of gloves.

Peregrine also kept warm in a coat with a fur-trim hood, while also wearing a woolly scarf and hat.

The first sighting of Sophie and Peregrine together was during the Rugby World Cup in France in October, where they were seen kissing near the Gare du Nord station.

The pair then parted ways in chauffeur-driven cars before they later reunited at the city’s Stade de France, where Sophie unveiled the Rugby World Cup trophy.

According to The Sun, an onlooker said: ‘They arrived together at the chauffeur pick-up location outside of the station. It looked like they might have both come on the Eurostar from London.

‘They stood there for a few minutes and were chatting and laughing a lot. He then took his hat off and leaned in to give her a big kiss. After the kiss they parted ways.’

Just hours after the kiss, Sophie was seen smiling as she and Peregrine both arrived ahead of the Rugby World Cup Final between New Zealand and South Africa.

Sophie walked a few steps ahead of the aristocrat, dubbed Britain’s ‘most eligible bachelor’, before going on to the pitch to unveil the Webb Ellis cup.

The kiss came one month after Sophie’s ex Joe, who she shares daughters Willa, three, and Delphine, 16 months, with, filed for divorce and the pair reached a temporary custody agreement.

Peregrine has a £5million house in Chelsea while his father owns a mansion in West Sussex with 22 bedrooms and 16,500 acres, including ten polo pitches.

Last month, it was revealed by MailOnline that Olympia was in a romantic relationship with married celebrity chef Thomas Straker.

After the relationship came to light, Straker’s wife kicked him out of their marital home.

Friends of Straker and his wife Davina who have two daughters aged four and two, said she was ‘devastated’ to be told of his infidelity in October.

The cookery star who has 4.5million social media followers was photographed with Olympia, outside her home earlier this month.

His ancestral estate is home to Cowdray Park Polo Club, which boasts ten pitches and hosts more than 450 matches each year.

The prestigious club hosts the annual Gold Cup, where both Prince William and Prince Harry have played. The Gold Cup is polo’s most prestigious European event.

The main Cowdray House, bought in 1908 by Peregrine’s great-great-grandfather Weetman Dickinson Pearson, has 120 acres of formal gardens and woodland.

The house was a replacement for a Tudor manor built by the Montague family, which burnt down in 1793.

In 2009, Lord and Lady Cowdray reportedly decided to put the estate on the market for £25million, but decided they couldn’t part with the property and instead started hosting luxury events there, with Cowdray Hall now serving as a wellness centre.

Cowdray Hall offers spiritual workshops, retreats and weekly classes, and features a chapel used for yoga, Pilates and meditation.

Peregrine previously admitted that despite being the heir to the sprawling estate, which also features a farm shop and café, he does not play polo himself.

He told the Daily Telegraph in 2018: ‘I’m getting lessons, I grew up riding and over the next few years it’s something I can see myself doing a lot more.’

The publication also reported that Peregrine was taking a more active role in running the estate and was shadowing chief executive Jonathan Russell to learn about the intricacies of the polo club.

‘It’s great to be able to observe it from a distance and see what my future role is going to be,’ Peregrine said.

Peregrine’s own children will not grow up on the Cowdray Estate due to it being transformed into an events venue, but Peregrine said he isn’t upset at the prospect as he looked towards the future.

‘Having heard the stress of managing these type of houses, it’s the perfect compromise,’ he told the Telegraph.

‘The house is still an important part of the community and a valuable employer, without costing us money to run. And I still have the luxury of using it when I like.’

She also deleted all traces of him on her account on the picture-sharing app.

Olympia’s grandfather is King Constantine, a relation of the late Prince Philip, who was exiled from Greece following the 1967 coup. The family continue to use their royal titles decades after the abolition of the monarchy.

The couple had not been seen in public together since November 2022, and did not holiday together this year after three consecutive summers of doing so.

Instead, the Princess visited Italy and Greece with family and friends including actress Poppy Delevingne, who has been linked to her brother Prince Constantine Alexios.

Meanwhile, Peregrine spent his summer with pals in Cow Neck, New York state, as well as in Spain with family. He also went to the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

However, Olympia looked far from downcast as she spent time with celebrity chef Straker.

Olympia and Straker, who runs a restaurant in Notting Hill, appeared to be joking and laughing as they walked down the street together.

Preferring to stay out of the spotlight, Peregrine’s Instagram is private and is followed by Jamie Redknapp and Olivia Bentley. Sophie is now listed among his followers.

In August, it emerged that Peregrine’s father Lord Cowdray and his wife Marina, the Viscountess Cowdray, had separated after 36 years of marriage.

‘It’s highly acrimonious,’ a family friend claimed to the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden at the time.

‘Marina has walked out of the marriage. Michael [the viscount] is devastated. The New Age stuff has changed her.’

As well as Peregrine, the couple also have a daughter Eliza Pearson, 35, who married Ned Rocknroll – who changed his surname from Abel Smith – in 2009.

Princess Beatrice was among the guests at the open-air pagan wedding ceremony led by a druid, but the pair went their separate ways just years later.

Ned, a nephew of Virgin billionaire Sir Richard Branson, went on to marry actress Kate Winslet in 2012 and the couple are still together.

Lord Cowdray also has a son called Sebastian from a previous relationship with model Barbara Ray.

Reflecting on his childhood in 2018, Peregrine said his artist mother Marina never forced them to play polo, despite growing up on the grounds of a prestigious polo club, and allowed them to be ‘creative’.

He told the Telegraph how he and his siblings would spend a lot of time with their mother in her pottery studio in the garden as the heir of the Cowdray fortune looked back on his upbringing.

Taco Bell Halts Lettuce Use Amid Parasite Crisis Sickening 1,600

A recent cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce from Taylor Farms has resulted in over 1,600 reported illnesses.

>

The outbreak of cyclosporiasis, traced back to lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms in central Mexico, has affected 1,644 individuals, with 94 requiring hospitalization. The FDA has identified a connection between the contaminated lettuce and Taco Bell restaurants across several states, including Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, which received the recalled iceberg lettuce.

In response to the outbreak, Taco Bell promptly and voluntarily removed the affected lettuce from its supply chain. The company also issued an online statement to reassure customers of the safety of its food and its dedication to public health. “We believe public health is a shared responsibility among restaurants, their suppliers, and authorities, and we are proud to have consistently acted quickly and proactively to protect our guests,” the statement read. The chain urged all relevant dining establishments, retailers, and food service providers to follow suit with precautionary measures.

The fast-food giant also communicated directly with customers via Instagram, emphasizing its commitment to health and safety. The post read, “We want you to hear it from us. We take your health and safety seriously and have removed all affected Taylor Farms lettuce from Taco Bell stores. So go ahead and enjoy your Taco Bell today. You always got us. We always got you. See you in the drive-thru.”

Major Grocery Recall Expands: 5 Items You Need to Throw Away Immediately

The shredded lettuce is sold at Walmart and other retailers, with a full list of the recalled products right here. Taylor Farms says the shredded iceberg product was distributed June 29 through July 16 in states including Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Texas (the recalled lettuce is being pulled across 27 states so far). California and New York are not included in the recall.

Taylor Farms issued a recall after Taco Bell did, releasing a statement about the outbreak. “Based on information provided yesterday by the FDA, Taylor Farms de Mexico is voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market,” the company said. “While the FDA traceback is indicating a specific independent farm that represents less than 1% of the U.S.’s iceberg lettuce supply as the potential source of the outbreak, we have removed all iceberg lettuce from the region indefinitely.”

According to the FDA, the most common symptom of cyclospora is diarrhea with frequent bowel movements. “Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, and fever may be noted. Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms,” the agency says.

Customers are being warned to not eat any recalled lettuce, but to throw it away or return it to where it was bought. Surfaces and items that may have touched the recalled lettuce should be thoroughly cleaned with hot soapy water or the dishwasher.

Saidaboj Proclaims Love for Burna Boy: “I Want to Be the Mother of His Children, Not His Money

Social media sensation Saidaboj has ignited a flurry of responses after admitting her deep affection for Grammy-award-winning artist Burna Boy, announcing her wish to become his spouse and the mother to his future offspring.

In her latest TikTok video, Saidaboj portrayed Burna Boy as exceedingly accomplished, questioning why he remains single. She passionately appealed for the chance to be involved in his life, insisting that it is not his riches she desires but his love, presence, and the opportunity to forge a family together.

“Burna Boy, you possess too much success to remain unattached. You’re too accomplished to lead a life without family. I wish to be the mother of your future children,” she declared with conviction.

“Burna, all I’m asking for is a chance. A chance to be around you. I don’t want your money. I want your time. I want your love.

“I came to change your life. This isn’t disrespect. This is love. I don’t chase men. But I’m chasing you. And that should tell you everything. I’m meant to be the mother of your child. Give me a chance, love.”

Her video quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions from social media users, with many questioning her approach while others dismissed the clip as a publicity stunt.

Andy Burnham’s Historic Rise as UK’s Seventh Prime Minister in Ten Tumultuous Years

0

In a significant political shift, Andy Burnham, previously the mayor of Greater Manchester, is positioned to replace Keir Starmer, stepping into the role of the UK’s seventh prime minister in just ten years. Burnham, now at the helm of the Labour Party, will be finalizing his ascent on Monday.

Burnham’s return to the political spotlight was marked by his victory in a closely contested special election in June. This victory heralded his comeback to Parliament, with the official swearing-in taking place on July 12—mere hours after Keir Starmer, faced with dwindling popularity, announced his intention to resign after serving two years.

Starmer is set to make the ceremonial journey from Downing Street to Buckingham Palace, where he will formally submit his resignation to King Charles III.

Following this, Burnham, at 56, will be invited to the palace by Charles, who will task him with forming a new government—a formal process often referred to as “kissing hands,” which will mark the beginning of his premiership.

Catch up on the latest developments.

Keir Starmer sys ‘work is done’ as he leaves Downing Street

Keir Starmer said “my work is done,” as he prepares to leave Downing Street for the last time to resign as prime minister.

The outgoing leader, forced to resign by his own party,, said Britain is now stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.”

Starmer spoke outside 10 Downing St. before he heads to Buckingham Palace to offer his resignation to King Charles III.

Andy Burnham will make a speech in the same spot after he is formally appointed prime minister by the king.

Press pack gathers outside famous black door

Dozens of reporters and photographers from international media have packed the street outside No. 10 Downing Street.

They have gathered about half an hour ahead of Keir Starmer’s departure from his official residence to see King Charles III and formally resign as prime minister.

Police have put up extra metal barriers outside the famous black door to prevent people standing directly in front.

The lion and the unicorn in front of No. 10

You know it’s the business of government — and not just politics — when the lectern in front of 10 Downing Street features the curious crest with a lion and a unicorn on it.

The lectern was set up in advance of Keir Starmer’s final speech as prime minister.

The two creatures share the distinction of being part of the royal coat of arms since the 17th century.

The lion, although never living in the wild of England, is its national animal. The unicorn, though fictional, is Scotland’s official animal.

The two became part of the crest when the two crowns were united in 1603, when King James I ascended the throne in England. He was already King James VI in Scotland.

An unwelcome soundtrack may not drown out new leader

Protesters have a habit of blasting music that mocks prime ministers outside 10 Downing Street.

Starmer did not escape the abuse, nor did his predecessor.

But Burnham could avoid an unwanted soundtrack after the Metropolitan Police banned the use of loud speakers by anyone gathering outside the gates to Downing Street between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Starmer began his resignation speech last month as the European Union anthem, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” echoed from the walls behind him.

Rishi Sunak, the Conservative Party’s last prime minister, was nearly drowned out by the volume when he called the July 4, 2024, election that would see Starmer and Labour sweep him out of office.

It seemed prescient as Sunak stood in a downpour to the tune of D:Ream’s “Things Can Only Get Better,” a rival Labour campaign song from the Tony Blair era.

Headlines the next day showed a soaked Sunak and said, “Things can only get wetter.”

Get ready to kiss hands

The political ritual at Buckingham Palace to change British prime ministers has specific steps.

The outgoing prime minister, Keir Starmer in this case, goes to the palace to offer his resignation to the king.

Then the incoming prime minister, Andy Burnham later today, sweeps in for a private ceremony known as the “Kissing of Hands,’’ though no hands are actually kissed.

Instead, the king will ask Burnham to form a new government. Burnham will bow, shake Charles’ hand and assume his new role. A photo will be snapped to record the moment power is transferred.

“The proof, if proof were needed, is the photograph and the film footage that we will also see of the encounter,″ said Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine. “That is the defining moment.”

Outside the palace, there is usually a swirl of activity as commentators breathlessly speculate on what’s being said inside and news helicopters hover overhead.

Traditionally, the new prime minister leaves the palace in a government car and heads to his official home and office behind the famous black door of No. 10 Downing Street, where he will make a statement.

Britain’s new prime minister had ‘unfinished business’

Andy Burnham served in Labour governments two decades ago before leaving London in 2017 to run for mayor of Greater Manchester.

Burnham was a popular leader for the northwest England city, overseeing economic regeneration, improved public transport and growing cultural confidence.

Burnham, 56, says he had “unfinished business” on the national stage and Starmer’s troubles gave him the opportunity to return to Parliament after winning a special election.

Burnham says he will replicate “Manchesterism” on a national scale, harnessing public and private investment to spur economic growth and handing power from central government to local and regional leaders across the country. And he’s pledging to restore a sense of hope to politics.

But he will have to convince a skeptical British public that he has what it takes to make their lives better.

What will happen at Buckingham Palace

Andy Burnham has been UK leader in waiting for the past week. But he does not become prime minister until King Charles says so.

That will happen today at Buckingham Palace in an exchange that embodies the fact that in this parliamentary democracy, the right to govern is still derived from royal authority.

The ceremony harkens back to a time when the king exercised supreme power and chose his preeminent minister, the prime minister, to run his government.

That has changed, of course. Modern Britain is a constitutional monarchy where the king’s powers are strictly limited by law and tradition. But centuries after real power was transferred to the elected House of Commons, many things retain echoes of the past.

One of those is the moment when the king formally asks a politician selected by his or her party to form the next government.

How Britain got to this point

Britain got its most recent prime minister just two years ago, when Keir Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory.

Starmer’s honeymoon was short-lived. A series of missteps and policy U-turns saw public support drain away. After dire local election results in May, the Labour Party took the nuclear option and forced him to resign.

Britain’s parliamentary democracy allows governing parties to change leaders midterm, with the winner becoming prime minister without the need for a general election.

The next national election does not have to be held until 2029, five years from the last election in 2024, though Burnham can call one sooner if he wants.

Get ready to meet the chief mouser

Before the day is over, Andy Burnham is likely to encounter Larry the cat, the most famous permanent resident of No. 10 Downing Street.

The gray and white tabby has lived at the prime minister’s residence since 2011, surviving six of Burnham’s predecessors.

A one-time stray adopted to help combat a rodent problem, Larry now regally patrols Downing Street, often appearing just as visiting dignitaries arrive.

He already has been seen Monday morning, the center of attention in front of the polished black door.

Larry is the most stable thing in British politics, said photographer Justin Ng, one of the cat’s most frequent chroniclers.

″(He’s) like the night watchman of Downing Street,’’ Ng said. “He’s looking out, looking out for people. People are reassured (by) his presence that things will carry on.

These days Larry has his own profile on the government website and more than 900,000 followers on X. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte recently stopped to say hello, but all leaders hope to be seen by his side.

Now he just has to win over Burnham’s dog, Axel. No problem, right?

It’s moving day at Downing Street

It’s a day of action at Downing Street, the British prime minister’s official residence.

Departing leader Keir Starmer will give a short farewell speech before going to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to King Charles III. The king will then invite new Labour Party leader Andy Burnham to the palace and ask him to form a government.

Burnham will then address the nation for the first time as prime minister in front of the famous black door of 10 Downing St.

Labour is hoping Burnham’s arrival will signal an end to the rapid turnover of UK leaders. He will be the country’s seventh prime minister since 2016.
