Tragic Death Unveils Wife’s Alleged Ponzi Scheme and Deadly Insulin Plot

0

In a chilling scene in February 2019, Natalie Cochran was forced to rush her husband, Michael, to a hospital in West Virginia as he battled for survival.

Assistant prosecutor Ashley Acord recounted during a July 19 episode of Oxygen’s Snapped that Michael’s blood glucose level had plummeted to a perilously low 21, a situation she described as critical. “Such levels can lead to a coma, depriving the brain of oxygen, with death being a probable consequence,” she explained.

After being placed on a ventilator, Michael remained in a fragile state for nearly a week before doctors declared him brain-dead, leading to his transfer to hospice where he eventually passed away. Despite the absence of an autopsy, his passing was chalked up to natural causes.

However, the cause of death didn’t sit right. At 38, Michael was a vibrant father deeply invested in bodybuilding, making his sudden demise all the more baffling. It wasn’t until much later that the true circumstances began to emerge.

Who Were Natalie Cochran and Michael Cochran?

The pair shared a history that stretched back to high school, with Natalie serving as a retail pharmacist while Michael ran an IT business. Yet, despite their achievements, their aspirations extended far beyond.

In 2017, the couple started Tactical Solutions—a company managed largely by Natalie—that bought and sold government contracts. The business quickly took off and, before long, they were buying homes, cars and taking lavish vacations.

But after Michael’s death, the couple’s finances came under scrutiny.

“A lawyer in Beckley had approached me about an investment that he had made with Natalie Cochran,” private investigator James Quesenberry told Snapped. “He was concerned that he wasn’t going to receive his money back.”

That $40,000 transaction wasn’t the only payment in question—investigators soon identified other frustrated clients of Tactical Solutions awaiting payment.

“There were all sorts of excuses as to why those promises couldn’t be fulfilled,” Raleigh County Prosecutor Tom Truman told Snapped. “Natalie would blame the bank for not transferring the money as promised.”

But when investigators could not find records showing Tactical Solutions had ever secured a government contract, they suspected that Natalie was committing fraud.

The discovery triggered two separate investigations: One into Michael’s death and the other into the couple’s finances.

Natalie Cochran’s Secrets Are Exposed

When detectives interviewed family friends Stephanie and John Hamilton, they learned a lot about the Cochrans.

For starters, one month before Michael fell ill, Natalie revealed that she had cancer.

“I was devastated for her,” recalled Stephanie. “She’s got young kids.”

So, when Natalie contacted the Hamiltons on Feb. 6 to report that Michael had collapsed at home, they rushed over to help.

Michael appeared to be sleeping on the couch and Natalie explained that he had a seizure. However, when John insisted on calling an ambulance, Natalie declined.

“She said, ‘I’m going to let him sleep it off—this is what he does whenever he has seizures,’” John told Snapped. “You’re thinking, ‘I really don’t think this is the best idea,’ but it’s her husband.”

According to the Hamiltons, Natalie waited eight hours before bringing Michael to the emergency room—a detail that alarmed investigators.

“It seems like she was delaying care for him,” retired West Virginia State Police Lieutenant Tim Bledsoe recalled. “But why would you do that? Then your gut sinks because you’re thinking, ‘Man, that’s pretty cold-blooded.”

But Natalie had an explanation.

Michael hated hospitals after a prior health scare that doctors initially attributed to a brain tumor before diagnosing him with seizures, she told investigators. According to Natalie, Michael was furious about the time and money he had spent on doctors and vowed to not visit a hospital again.

Natalie also suggested that Michael had died of an overdose from a mystery supplement he was taking to build muscle.

“She stated that after Michael had passed away, she found this bottle in a medicine cabinet which was labeled as enclomiphene citrate,” Acord said. “She didn’t know what it was. She said he got it on a trip to Mexico.”

Three months after Michael’s death, both investigations accelerated after police found two pieces of evidence in the Cochran home.

First, a contract indicated that Natalie was attempting to sell half of Tactical Solutions for millions—a sign to investigators that she wanted to offload the business before fraud allegations came to light.

They also found a small vial of insulin with a single puncture, buried under a stack of candy bars in her refrigerator.

“How many of us that don’t have [diabetes] have insulin in our refrigerators?” said Truman. “Not many.”

Natalie told investigators that she was storing the insulin for a neighbor’s diabetic child. The neighbor confirmed giving the insulin to Natalie but said it was supposed to regulate Natalie’s high blood sugar caused by her cancer treatments.

When police requested Natalie’s medical records, there was no evidence she had ever been treated for cancer.

“Who lies about that?” said Bledsoe. “If you’re capable of that, is it hard to believe you’re capable of killing your husband?”

Police Exhume Michael Cochran’s Dead Body

Seven months after Michael’s death, police obtained a court order to exhume his body, hoping an autopsy could determine whether he had been murdered.

“At that point, Michael was already pretty severely decayed,” noted Acord. “His cause and manner of death were ruled undetermined and undeterminable.”

With the murder case stalled, investigators could only pursue their financial case, and Natalie was arrested for wire fraud and money laundering. In September 2020, she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Meanwhile, police were determined to solve Michael’s sudden death. They searched Natalie’s phone, uncovering thousands of messages in which she made excuses to investors about their missing money.

It was also clear that Michael was starting to catch on to his wife’s activities.

“The night before Michael collapsed, he was getting so outraged that the money was not coming,” said Truman, “because Natalie had been telling him that they have hundreds of millions of dollars.”

In fact, on the morning of his death, Michael had booked plane tickets for him and Natalie to meet with bank officials.

“At that point, the Ponzi scheme ends,” noted Truman. “She had to do anything she could to prevent the meeting.”

According to authorities, Natalie canceled the flight and instead delivered a fatal injection of insulin to her husband.

In November 2021, Natalie—still in prison—was indicted for murder. A second autopsy later concluded that Michael’s death was a homicide caused by an insulin injection.

During the three-week trial in January 2025, Natalie’s defense argued that if she had injected Michael with insulin, he could have easily fought her off.

The jury, however, found Natalie guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Enzo Fernandez Faces World Cup Heartbreak as Red Card Alters Argentina’s Final Dreams

0

Enzo Fernández experienced a full spectrum of emotions during the World Cup.

Just five days earlier, Fernández was lauded as Argentina’s hero, having salvaged their fate with a dramatic late equalizer in the semifinal face-off against England.

Yet, on the grandest platform in sports, his fortunes flipped rapidly as he shifted from being celebrated to being criticized in mere moments.

In the dying moments of the second half, his red card didn’t just leave Argentina a player short, but it also erased their best chance to claim victory, as they eventually succumbed to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a 1-0 deficit in extra time.

Reflecting on the incident, Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, noted, “Enzo’s dismissal… I believe the first yellow card was unnecessary, but that’s the way it is. Naturally, no one expects a second yellow in such a setting – it’s the World Cup Final, and I think certain aspects could have been handled differently.”

After already struggling to create anything on offense against Spain’s suffocating press, Argentina had failed to register a single shot in regulation.

As the game was headed to extra time, Argentina was hoping to survive and find one fleeting moment on the counterattack to steal victory from the jaws of defeat against Spain.

Then Fernández lost his composure.

In the 82nd minute, Fernández was shown a yellow card for dissent after protesting a non-foul decision by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic.

It was a needless booking from one of Argentina’s emotional leaders, but it would soon become more significant than anyone realized.

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez (24) fouls Spain defender Pau Cubarsi (22), sending Cubarsi airborne.

Ten minutes later, disaster struck.

As Pau Cubarsí chased a loose ball near midfield, Fernández lunged into a reckless challenge that left Vincic with little choice but to show the Argentine midfielder a second yellow and in turn, a red card. Argentina was down to 10 men with stoppage time winding down and an additional 30 minutes of extra time still left to play.

Fernández walked slowly toward the tunnel as Spanish supporters erupted while thousands of Argentine fans stood silent inside MetLife Stadium, fully aware that the mountain in front of their team had suddenly become almost impossible to climb.

Fernández became just the sixth player ever sent off in a FIFA World Cup final, joining one of the tournament’s most exclusive and infamous lists.

Rather than being remembered for his thunderbolt against England that carried Argentina into the championship match, his tournament will forever include one of the defining mistakes of the final itself.

It’s unlikely Argentina, completely dominated by Spain all day long, would have won anyway, but Fernández’s one reckless challenge all but extinguished them.

Beckham Family Stuns at World Cup Final Arrival

0

On Sunday, the iconic duo, David and Victoria Beckham, made a striking appearance at the World Cup Final, flanked by their sons Romeo and Cruz.

Spain emerged victorious as the 2026 World Cup champions following Ferran Torres’ decisive goal during the gripping extra time against Argentina.

The Beckhams, having been regulars throughout the tournament, witnessed the exhilarating showdown at New York’s MetLife Stadium alongside their family.

Noticeably missing from the action was Brooklyn Beckham, who opted to watch the match from the comfort of his home with wife Nicola Peltz, amidst ongoing tensions with his famous family.

True to form, David donned a dapper full suit while standing with a chic Victoria, who chose to attend the thrilling match instead of the anticipated UK wedding of fellow Spice Girl Mel C.

The youngest Beckham son, 21, was joined by his girlfriend Jackie Apostel, 30, who opted for a bright red dress for the occasion.

Elsewhere Brooklyn Beckham watched the World Cup final from his sofa at home as  Nicola Peltz shared a snap of the back of Brooklyn’s head as he tuned into the Spain vs Argentina game.

On Wednesday the former footballer, 51, and his wife Victoria, 52, were seen with their heads in their hands after the Three Lions lost 2-1 in the semi-final against Argentina.

And despite the result not being what the Beckham clan had hoped, they were back to watch the final game between Spain and Argentina.

Asked who he thought would take home the trophy on Friday, David refused to pick a winner as he sat on the fence due to his loyalties to both Spain and Lionel Messi, who plays for his Inter Miami team.

He said: ‘Oh my goodness. Obviously I played in Spain, so I have a huge affection for Spain as a country and obviously for their football team. I think they’ve done an exceptional job this World Cup and they deserve to be in the final.

‘And with Argentina, they have Lionel (Messi). Like I speak about Ricardo (Kaka), I’ll speak exactly the same about Lionel because he’s an exceptional player, but an exceptional person with the right values and he treats everyone the way they should be treated. I’m going around the houses…’

As he was pushed for an answer, Beckham replied: ‘I’m going to sit on the fence. I don’t know who’s going to win. I want Lionel to do incredibly well because he’s an exceptional person and player. But Spain are going to be tough to play against.

‘I’m not going to say who I think is going to win. I’m just going to sit on the fence and enjoy the game.’

The crowd then booed in David’s direction, with the former midfielder and Kaka both laughing off the jeers.

The star then joked: ‘I haven’t been booed for a while. I’ve got booed a little bit the other night. I wasn’t expecting it here.’

On Wednesday David looked heartbroken as Argentina knocked England out of the World Cup in Atlanta, Georgia.

David’s son Cruz, 21, consoled his weeping father following a game of mixed emotions in the stands.

David and Victoria watched the devastating semi-final with their children Romeo, 23, Harper, 15, Cruz and his girlfriend Jackie Apostel, 30.

The Three Lions had been leading 1-0 when Antony Gordon snuck the ball into the back of the net in the 55th minute.

But just when fans were thinking the job was almost done, Argentina staged a late comeback with both Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martinez scoring goals just seven minutes apart.

Earlier in the game, Victoria leaped into David’s arms as she celebrated England’s goal in the second half.

Posh Spice made sure to celebrate this time round after she was ridiculed for failing to react to Jude Bellingham’s goal in the quarter-finals last week.

The legendary footballer poked fun at his wife becoming an instant meme and insisted she was ‘celebrating on the inside’ after her subdued reaction went viral.

Victoria jumped out of her seat as David roared with victory after Gordon put England 1-0 up against Argentina.

David followed the Three Lions around the US in the hope they would finally take home the World Cup trophy.

The family joined England fans singing the national anthem, only to be drowned out by Argentina fans booing loudly.

David had to face watching his beloved country’s team go against his good friend Lionel Messi, who is part of his Inter Miami team.

Grand Opening: Boys and Girls Club of Greeneville and Greene County Unveiled

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – A moment of excitement and community pride unfolded in Greeneville as the Boys and Girls Club of Greeneville and Greene County officially inaugurated its brand-new facility over the weekend. Enthusiastic guests gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the end of eager anticipation that has surrounded this development.

Dedicated to providing K-12 students with enriching and secure environments, this esteemed nonprofit organization offers a variety of after-school and summer programs. These programs are celebrated nationwide for their contribution to child and adolescent development.

Situated along East Vann Road, the impressive new edifice sprawls over 27,000 square feet, effectively doubling the space of its predecessor. At a cost of nearly $8 million, this state-of-the-art youth center boasts a range of facilities including an arts and crafts area, a cutting-edge learning and technology lab, and a health and wellness section. It also features various games and activities, crowned by a versatile gym equipped with 12 retractable goals.

Further enriching the educational landscape, the facility offers programs in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM), along with workforce readiness courses. These programs are integral in guiding students toward successful graduation and equipping them with vital skills for the future.

Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Greeneville and Greene County said he has been in the position since 1999 and with the growth he has seen in the facility over the years, he is excited for students to use the new modern development center.

“We’ve had a building we’re in that was built in the late 60s,” Bullington said. “So, everybody’s excited about the new technology in this building and about all the new activities and expanded services that we’ll be able to provide.”

The track to build the new facility has been in the works for years. Treasurer Ted Bryant said the modernized location aims to provide services to provide advancement and youth development within children to carry into adulthood.

“Every age, really in school, we’re hoping to provide some kind of services for and help them any way they need help,” Bryant said. “Growing as caring citizens.”

The public was open to view the ribbon cutting, ranging from the community, Boys and Girls club members and officials to local leaders.

Former member of the Boys and Girls Club of Greeneville and Greene County and current University of Tennessee football commit, Zaydyn Anderson, told News Channel 11 that he used to visit the former facility, where he had memorable experiences.

“I used to come here. I had a great time coming here, growing up and just a good experience to be here in the new building,” Anderson said.

Among many on the stage of the ribbon cutting was a former voice of the Tennessee Volunteers, Bob Kesling. Kesling told News Channel 11 that the new facility will shape the lives of the youth.

“They’re going to have the facility here with classrooms and basketball courts and all things,” Kesling said. “And, you know, of course, they got the park right next door. And that’s going to provide a lot of facilities that a lot of other Boys and Girls clubs having. So, this is going to change lives. This is a very important big step for not only this Boys and Girls Club, but I think this whole community and East Tennessee.”

The new facility will officially open on Monday for the children of the Boys and Girls Club to use as a safe space for all.

Randall Wallace Unveils Mel Gibson’s Ominous Spiritual Insight for ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel

0

Randall Wallace, who has worked closely with Mel Gibson over the years, recently disclosed a somber spiritual cautionary note given by the two-time Oscar awardee before embarking on the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.”

This 76-year-old screenwriter, known for his collaborations with the 70-year-old Gibson in films like 1995’s “Braveheart,” 2002’s “We Were Soldiers,” and 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” co-penned the screenplay for “The Resurrection of the Christ” alongside Mel Gibson and his brother Donal Gibson.

In a recent chat on Raymond Arroyo’s “Arroyo Grande” podcast, Wallace reminisced about encouraging Gibson to delve into the Resurrection story following the overwhelming success of “The Passion of the Christ.”

Wallace clarified that it was he who initiated the dialogue with Gibson about working on “The Resurrection of the Christ,” rather than the other way around.

Wallace further elaborated, saying, “This isn’t to say Mel hadn’t pondered the Resurrection over the years. In fact, the original cut of ‘The Passion of the Christ’ didn’t include the resurrection scene, yet feedback from audiences made it clear that they had a strong desire to witness that moment.”

Wallace said Gibson ultimately decided to add the brief Resurrection scene that serves as “The Passion of the Christ’s” closing epilogue.

In the sequence, Jesus is seen rising, leaving the tomb, and revealing the wounds in his hands before the movie ends.

Wallace told Arroyo that he proposed developing a feature-length film depicting the Resurrection while he and Gibson were on a promotional tour for “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016.

“Having studied the Resurrection and being so consumed by it, I thought about it many times,” Wallace recalled. “I didn’t have anything to do with ‘The Passion of the Christ.’ When we were promoting ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ we were sitting there talking about our lives, and I said, ‘Look, you know, the story that you really need to tell is the Resurrection.’”

Wallace went on to recount Gibson’s reaction to his suggestion, remembering that the director believed the project could invite spiritual warfare.

“There was this long pause, and he said something profoundly beautiful. He said, ‘If we do this, it can’t be for the money, and it can’t be to get back at people that have hated us or wronged us or been unhappy with us,’” Wallace recalled. “And I said, ‘Amen to that.’”

“Then he said, ‘You know, Satan’s going to come after you,’” Wallace continued.

“I said, ‘Well, you know, Satan doesn’t really care about Baptists.’ It’s really good when Satan can get a Catholic. We’re a dime a dozen,” he said as Arroyo laughed.

“And of course, I was being facetious, but I was also thinking…” Wallace continued.

“What if he’s right?” Arroyo interjected.

“Well, yeah,” Wallace admitted.

“That’s what I would be thinking,” Arroyo said.

“We had a beautiful conversation about grace,” Wallace recalled.

Wallace told Arroyo that conversation with Gibson marked the beginning of their collaboration on “The Resurrection of the Christ.”

“I knew he had written ‘The Passion,’ was very much deeply involved in the writing of it. And I said, ‘Look, let’s partner up. I’ll write a draft, give it to you, then we’ll start tearing it up, go through it. You do your thing, I’ll do mine. We’ll work together, we’ll work apart.’ So we started that way,” Wallace remembered.

Gibson has previously said he, Wallace and Donal spent roughly six to eight years writing and refining the screenplay for “The Resurrection of the Christ,” which will be split into two parts.

In May, Gibson announced that production on the sequel had been completed. “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One” will be released May 6, 2027, on Ascension Day, the Christian holiday marking Jesus Christ’s ascent into heaven 40 days after Easter Sunday. “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two” is scheduled to debut May 25, 2028, over Memorial Day weekend.

In a press release, Gibson shared that the story was brought to the screen “exactly as I envisioned it.”

“I’m deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful,” Gibson said.

“This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist. This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history,” he added.

“The Passion of the Christ,” which premiered in February 2004, depicted the final 12 hours of Jesus’ life leading up to the crucifixion. Its graphic violence and subject matter made it one of that year’s most controversial movies.

The film was a smash hit, grossing more than $610 million worldwide on a reported $30 million budget. It also earned Academy Award nominations for its makeup, score and cinematography.

While speaking with Arroyo, Wallace teased what audiences can expect from the long-awaited sequel.

“His unique vision of the spiritual realm is really special,” Wallace said of Gibson.

“The interesting thing is that, while in some ways — the ultimate movie — I want to keep it all secret about what’s going to happen,” he continued. “But the ultimate movie, in some ways, will have elements that people have never seen before.”

“In fact, in many ways, it’ll be stuff nobody’s ever seen,” Wallace added. “And yet I believe it’ll be, in a certain way, the most orthodox telling. It’ll be the most consistent telling of the overall belief, the awe and the mystery that Christians experience when they experience the Resurrection.”

Legendary Aussie Actor, 80, Revealed as Iconic Villain in Mad Max 2

0

He’s an Australian actor who carved a niche by embodying some of the most memorable villains in the action and sci-fi genre through the 1980s.

Now at the age of 80, he was recently spotted in Los Angeles during a rare public appearance at what seemed to be a Target store. He wore his long gray hair loose, paired with a blue button-down shirt and brown trousers.

Back in 1981, he famously portrayed the deranged marauder in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. His role tested the patience of everyone around, including Mel Gibson’s Max. Who could forget that intense opening scene where he gets injured by a friendly fire and, in a chilling move, pulls out the arrow from his arm amid a scream, thirsting for brutal vengeance?

Fast forward to 1985, his presence loomed large as the formidable villain in Commando, where he faced off against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s heroic strongman. Fans reveled in his depiction of the menacing and unhinged mercenary, famed for his chainmail attire.

Later that same year, he showcased his ability to poke fun at himself in the sci-fi comedy Weird Science. Here, he played a character that humorously referenced his notorious roles in both Mad Max 2 and Commando.

Can you guess who he is?

If you guessed Vernon Wells, you are absolutely right!

The Daily Mail has reached out to Wells’ representative for comment.

Despite playing bitter enemies who fought to the death, Wells and Gibson got along very well.

They shared a lighthearted camaraderie while shooting the film in the outback of New South Wales, Australia and around the desert city of Broken Wells.

Gibson even had a nickname for Wells – ‘Barometer Bum’ – because the freezing temperatures in Broken Wells would turn the actor’s posterior purple while he was clad in the character’s famous leather chaps, per Fandom.

Schwarzenegger initially had reservations about casting Wells in his action-packed epic, because he thought he looked too rough.

But the Austrian-born star pushed all doubts aside after they shot their first scene, in which Schwarzenegger was chained to a table as Wells attacked him, according to Forbes.

Schwarzenegger was impressed with Wells’ acting abilities, and they became lifelong friends, with the former Mr. Olympia calling the Aussie a ‘sweet, generous human being.’

Madonna, Shakira, BTS, and Justin Bieber: Unmissable World Cup Performances

0

Electrifying the World Cup halftime spectacle, Madonna kicked off the show with her iconic dance-pop anthem from 2000, “Music.” The Queen of Pop was joined by legendary Brazilian soccer icons Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, sparking an enthusiastic response from fans.

In an unforgettable whirlwind of excitement, Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS, and Shakira infused the World Cup’s debut halftime extravaganza with snippets of their chart-topping hits. This star-studded line-up on Sunday also shone a spotlight on Burna Boy, Ted Lasso, and an entertaining ensemble of Muppets.

Held at the famous MetLife Stadium just outside New York City, the show aimed to capture the grandeur reminiscent of the Super Bowl. However, this high-energy 11-minute performance packed more punch than its 13-minute American football counterpart. Each headliner captivated the audience with a dynamic two-minute showcase.

Madonna brought her flair to the stage by starting with a pre-recorded sequence in a roller rink before dramatically entering the stadium on a dune buggy. As she belted out, “Music, makes the people come together,” the presence of football legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho added to the electrifying atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel took the reins, orchestrating a powerful rendition of the White Stripes’ sports classic, “Seven Nation Army.” Adding a playful twist, the Muppets house band, featuring Animal on drums instead of Meg White, contributed their unique brand of musical mischief.

K-pop sensations BTS took to the field in variations of red and black moments later singing “Dynamite” following a nod to Norway’s Viking row.

Promoting the upcoming season of “Ted Lasso,” Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt, in character, pumped up Justin Bieber, who changed the tempo with “Everything Hallelujah,” performed with an acoustic guitar and a casual feel.

“Alright young man, let’s go! It’s your big shot!” Sudeikis said to Bieber. “Go out there, don’t be nervous, nobody’s watching.”

Shakira and Burna Boy followed with their official World Cup anthem “Dai Dai,” heard before all 104 kickoffs during this tournament. The Colombian superstar was barefoot, wearing a dress of yellow and pink feathers and surrounded by similarly clad dancers — including a group of children — before the Afrobeats icon joined her in the song whose refrain is an Italian version of “Let’s go!”

Shakira has virtually made a genre out of World Cup songs, including 2010’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).”

The show wrapped with the PS22 Chorus of elementary-school students from Staten Island, backed by Dudamel and joined by Chris Martin — the Coldplay singer who curated the performance — along with Shakira and many more Muppets and “Sesame Street” characters, including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Count von Count and Cookie Monster.

Dudamel and about 40 musicians — about half from the New York Philharmonic and half from Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra — were on the field, though their music was prerecorded Wednesday at the Manhattan Center.

Afterward, Javier Bardem was among the Spanish fans at the stadium celebrating their home country’s second World Cup win. Bardem danced and pumped his fist as he celebrated the win.

Other stars at the game included Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner, and Matt Damon, who was having a big weekend with the epic opening of “The Odyssey.” He was with his wife, Luciana Barroso Damon, who wore the colors of her native Argentina.

Jennifer Hudson, Post Malone and Tom Cruise opened with closing ceremony

Jennifer Hudson, Robbie Williams and others performed a slew of anthems, Post Malone brought an old hit and a new tune and Tom Cruise gave an earnest hype-’em-up speech in the pre-match closing ceremony.

British singer and former Take That member Williams performed his FIFA anthem “Desire,” wearing a blue bedazzled track suit. He was joined by Pussycat Dolls member Nicole Scherzinger and Italian singer Laura Pausini in blue spangled gowns. Williams had released the song a year ago but dropped a new version with the two women earlier in the week.

The streamer IShowSpeed took the field first to perform his World Cup-themed song “Champions,” atop an image of the Empire State Building. Next was Post Malone, who walked on to the New York/New Jersey Stadium pitch covered with a tarp showing the New York skyline. He sung a brand new song, “Chrome Heartbreaker,” and was joined by Swae Lee to perform their 2018 duet “Sunflower” on a hexagon-heavy stage in the center of the field.

Cruise, who was also part of the Paris Olympics’ closing ceremony, followed them with a speech delivered in polo shirt and jeans.

“Today only two teams remain: España!” Cruise said, pausing for cheers before adding, “y Argentina!”

“Let us celebrate a tournament that brought the world together,” he said.

Most of the national anthems were piped in during the tournament, but they were performed live on Sunday. EGOT winner and talk show host Jennifer Hudson sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Wearing a white suit with red, white and blue trim, she stood in front of a bank of flags of the world, singing a cappella before being joined by a brass band.

Spanish Brass played Spain’s instrumental “La Marcha Real,” followed by Argentina’s “Himno Nacional Argentino,” sung by pop star María Becerra, clad in a flowing dress reminiscent of the Argentine flag.

Wildfire Smoke Chokes Central Illinois: Health Concerns and Air Quality Alerts Surge

If you happened to be in Central Illinois this Sunday, you might have noticed an unusual haze blanketing the sky. This wasn’t any ordinary fog; it was a result of wildfire smoke traveling all the way from Canada, significantly deteriorating the air quality and making it risky to breathe.

The smoke mingled with the sun’s UV rays and oxygen in the air, creating complex chemical reactions. This combination not only caused a murkiness that reduced visibility but also left a lingering scent reminiscent of burning plastic.

Health authorities are urging residents to stay indoors whenever possible. For those who must venture outside, they advise wearing N-95 masks for protection. One local in Champaign recounted their experience with the worsening conditions on Sunday.

“As I stepped out of my house this morning, I initially didn’t register the warnings my son had given me about the distant fires. I caught a whiff of smoke and then noticed a thick haze surrounding me. It suddenly hit me—this was all the way from Canada. I couldn’t believe it,” shared Ginny Unger-Freeman, a resident of Champaign.

There have also been a couple of pool closings in the area because of the smoke in the air. You can find out more about those closures here.

Celebrity Estates Listed for Sale Amidst Tragic Events

Celebrity landscapes have been shadowed by profound loss over the past year, with Hollywood bidding farewell to several beloved figures. These departures encompass those who succumbed to prolonged illnesses, those whose endings were heartbreakingly abrupt, and even instances of murder and suicide. As the industry mourns, the echoes of these losses reverberate through the real estate market, resulting in poignant property listings and shifts. Over recent months, three such listings have emerged, tied to the untimely deaths of prominent personalities.

Among these notable figures is Brandon Blackstock, the talent manager known for his marriage to renowned singer Kelly Clarkson. He passed away in August 2025 at just 48, following a valiant fight against melanoma, leaving fans reeling. Close to a year after his passing, the Montana retreat he held dear has become available for purchase. Nestled in the serene backdrop of Butte, Montana, this expansive estate has been listed with a price tag of $2.9 million, offering a glimpse into the personal world he cherished.

Hollywood has suffered through some pretty significant, high-profile celebrity deaths in the last 12 months. There have been deaths from long illnesses, tragic passings that seemingly struck suddenly and multiple murders and suicide deaths. With those deaths have come some very sad and very tragic celebrity real estate listings and movements. In the last few months, three real estate listings have come online after the tragically young passings of notable names.

Brandon Blackstock’s Montana Ranch Hits the Market a Year After his Death

Brandon Blackstock, the talent manager and former husband of celebrity songstress, Kelly Clarkson, died in August 2025 at age 48 following a battle with melanoma; his death shocked fans. Almost one year later, the Montana property he considered his dream home has been listed. The sprawling property in Butte, Montana, hit the market at $2.9 million.

Blackstock purchased the ranch in April 2022, just one month after his divorce from Clarkson was finalized. The 6,438-square-foot estate sits on more than 41 acres and features soaring ceilings and panoramic mountain views. He reportedly purchased the property, with career ranching aspirations, for $1.8 million.

The Montana home turned out to be Blackstock’s last chapter, though he certainly intended it to be his next great move. Prior to the Montana home, Blackstock and Clarkson shared an $8.5 million Encino mansion. It sold for $8.24 million in 2021 amid their divorce. A Nashville-area estate they owned together was also sold for $6.3 million.

Katherine Short’s Beachwood Canyon Cottage is for Sale

Katherine Hartley Short, the eldest daughter of comedian Martin Short, died by suicide on February 23, 2026, at age 42. A social worker and mental health advocate who worked with the charity Bring Change 2 Mind, Katherine was found at her home in the Beachwood Canyon area of the Hollywood Hills.

Short purchased the Cape Cod-style cottage for his daughter in 2014. He paid just over $1.1 million for the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home at the time, and Katherine lived there solo for more than a decade. Now, the property has been listed for sale at approximately $1.8 million. The listing is being handled by longtime agent Steven Moritz.

Martin Short, no stranger to loss after losing his wife to cancer decades ago, openly discussed his daughter’s passing in recent weeks. He noted that she worked through difficult mental health struggles until she could no longer carry on.

James Van Der Beek’s Former Beverly Hills Home is Available for Rent

James Van Der Beek’s former Beverly Hills rental has returned to the market. The rental listing went live five months after the “Dawson’s Creek” star died at age 48 from colorectal cancer. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom Spanish-style home at 333 South Roxbury Drive is now listed for rent at $13,950 per month.

Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, carried out a massive redesign on the home that was later featured in Architectural Digest before their move to Texas. It was widely believed they owned the property. In reality, the couple never actually owned the home; they leased it. The home is registered to a trust tied to billionaire real estate investors and former Los Angeles Clippers owners Donald and Rochelle Sterling, and has been for years.

Notably, the family’s more recent home, a 36-acre Texas ranch in Spicewood, was purchased by Van Der Beek for $4.76 million just weeks before his death. That purchase, made with financial help from celebrity friends including Steven Spielberg, allowed the family housing security as Van Der Beek’s death approached. His widow and children still reside there.

117th NAACP National Convention Launches in Chicago, Emphasizing Voter Engagement for Upcoming Midterms

CHICAGO (WLS) — McCormick Place is bustling with activity as the 117th NAACP National Convention takes center stage, gathering thousands of civil rights advocates, community leaders, and elected officials nationwide. The event is set to ignite discussions around civic engagement, voting rights, and inspiring upcoming generations of voters.

In the midst of America’s 250th birthday celebration, Chicago proudly plays host to this year’s convention under the resonant theme “We the People.”

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

NAACP officials point out that this theme is selected to shine a spotlight on the significance of voter participation and civic involvement.

“The theme serves as a powerful reminder that we the people hold the key to influence, and without peace in America, our power is at risk,” explained Dominic Hawkins, who serves as vice president of communications for the NAACP.

With the November midterms on the horizon, the organization has rolled out a robust $20 million campaign aimed at mobilizing voters to participate in the electoral process.

“We’re here strategizing to turn out black voters, but to also to understand what our policy priorities are to fight for the future so this next 250 years is more representative for the people who live here in these United States,” Hawkins said.

Attendees from across the country said the message is especially important as the nation heads toward the midterm elections.

“We are in a state of emergency, as I see it, when it comes to our young people. It is time for us as the adults to pass the baton over to the younger generation,” said Jacqueline Scott of Canton, Ohio.

Pam Smith of Starr County, Ohio, said voting remains a critical way for people to make their voices heard.

“Your vote is your voice, and so when people realize that they start speaking up and using that voice,” Smith said.

“I think right now, ‘We the people’ are tired,” she added.

Gov. JB Pritzker also referenced this year’s theme as he addressed convention attendees.

“Generation after generation of members of this organization of NAACP have stood up, have organized, have marched,” Pritzker said.

“And we need you now more than ever.”

The five-day convention continues through Wednesday at McCormick Place.
