Tragic Toll: Over 930 Lives Lost in Congo’s Devastating Ebola Crisis

0

Tragically, a minimum of 930 lives have been claimed by the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to reports from the nation’s Health Ministry.

These fatalities are part of the 2,344 Ebola cases confirmed by Saturday, as per the health officials’ overnight report leading into Monday. Notably, 37 deaths were documented within the previous day, marking one of the deadliest 24-hour periods during this crisis.

This particular Ebola outbreak, which erupted on May 15 in eastern Congo, has the grim distinction of being the most rapidly escalating instance of this virus ever observed.

An uncommon strain known as the Bundibugyo virus is fueling this epidemic, complicating efforts as there currently exists no sanctioned vaccine or therapeutic treatment for it.

The recent spike in casualties coincides with mounting security concerns that have hindered containment strategies, particularly in the hardest-hit region of Ituri province.

At least 12 attacks have been recorded against health facilities and teams since the outbreak was declared in mid-May, authorities said on Saturday.

Many health workers meanwhile have walked off their jobs as they protest lack of payment.

At least 36 health workers infected with the virus have died.

The health ministry 724 patients are currently in isolation and hospitals, adding that it is intensifying response efforts in affected health zones.

Andrew Tate Caught Allegedly Passing Phone to Bodyguard During Arrest

A newly emerged video captures Andrew Tate attempting to subtly hand his phone to a bodyguard, just as US Marshals move in to place him in handcuffs.

On Saturday, brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were taken into custody in Miami, facing a staggering 59 new criminal charges. These charges include offenses related to child pornography, extreme pornography, and rape.

Andrew, clad in an open purple shirt, silver chains, sunglasses, and cropped jeans, was apprehended by US Marshals outside the James L. Knight Center.

The arrest footage has generated significant online debate, particularly regarding a moment where Andrew appears to grab his phone and attempt to pass it to a bodyguard amid his detention.

Subsequently, the phone is observed on the ground, where another law enforcement officer is seen retrieving it.

It is unclear if US Marshals took possession of Andrew’s phone during the dramatic arrest.

Authorities then cuffed him, taking off his flashy chains as he was apprehended.

In a statement, the brothers’ attorney Joseph McBride blasted the new charges levied against them.

‘The world knows Andrew and Tristan Tate are innocent. Their enemies know it best of all. That is exactly why they have been attacked,’ the statement said.

McBride slammed the new charges as a ‘political hit’ aimed at countering the brothers’ defamation case in the US.

The Tates were taken into custody just moments before Andrew was due to host a bareknuckle boxing event.

The pending charges accuse Andrew, 39, and Tristan, 37, of abusing women between July 2010 and August 2017, and the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is seeking to have the pair extradited.

Andrew faces seven further counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and 19 additional charges for offences relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.

Tristan is being charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The brothers have strongly denied any wrongdoing.

Andrew and Tristan’s arrest comes just days after the Daily Mail revealed that they met with Texan Republican Representative Wesley Hunt in his congressional office in Washington.

They also attended a party hosted by President Donald Trump’s special envoy Paolo Zampolli – a former modelling agency boss who introduced Trump to Melania – that was held in a private capacity and not related to his official duties.

‘Paolo loves the Tates, but the rest of the government doesn’t,’ a source familiar with the Trump administration said after their arrest. ‘A good reminder that he’s not exactly representative.’

The Tates will be processed at the federal courthouse in Miami on Monday, a Department of Justice (DOJ) source told the Daily Mail, when the indictment against them will be unsealed.

Hours before his arrest Saturday, Andrew made a taunting post on X alluding to criminal charges he is additionally facing in Romania.

‘The prosecutor reads every single tweet I make. They’re all corrupt. Hello Dicott please raid the house,’ he wrote, referencing DIICOT, Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism.

Andrew also told his followers: ‘Learn to enjoy all forms of attention and haters become powerless.’

The controversial manosphere influencers also appears to have attended a party in Miami on Friday, sharing a video from the event on X.

McBride, in his scathing statement on behalf of his clients, said that the pair’s arrest was approved by a low-level DOJ official who ‘never got approval from leadership’.

‘Think about that. Two men who came to this country openly, lawfully and peacefully were thrown in a cage on the say-so of a bureaucrat freelancing with the full force of American law enforcement,’ McBride wrote.

‘We are confident that once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain’s political dirty work. Not here. Never. America is watching. The world is watching. And we will win.’

The Tates are dual US and British citizens who moved to Romania in 2016.

The former professional kickboxers have amassed a following of millions of fans, particularly young men and boys, by professing a lifestyle of luxury and unapologetic misogyny.

Andrew was previously dubbed as the ‘king of toxic masculinity’ on social media, and amassed nearly 11million followers on X.

His most widely condemned rhetoric includes comments that women who are sexually assaulted should bear some responsibility for their attacks, graphic descriptions of how he might abuse women and criticisms of people who seek medical treatment for mental illness.

The pair were arrested in Romania in December 2022 and charged in June 2023 with human trafficking and forming an organised crime group to sexually exploit women. Andrew was additionally charged with rape.

Romanian prosecutors in August 2024 expanded the case against them to include money laundering, witness intimidation and complicity in the trafficking of minors.

British prosecutors filed their own charges against the brothers in May 2025, including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking.

Romanian courts ruled that the pair would be extradited to the UK once proceedings conclude.

The Bucharest Court of Appeal ruled against sending the Tates to trial in 2024, and sent the case back to prosecutors after removing several pieces of evidence that were ‘deemed inadmissible’, including initial testimonies from their alleged victims from the file.

Prosecutors ‌are still investigating the first case, but in 2024, they began a second criminal investigation against the Tates and four other suspects on suspicion of forming an organised criminal group, human trafficking, trafficking of minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering.

3 Women’s Records Shattered at Wisconsin Lumberjack Event

0

HAYWARD, Wis. (AP) — In the quaint town of Hayward, Wisconsin, the Lumberjack World Championships witnessed the breaking of three monumental women’s world records amid exhilarating events like sawing, chopping, log-rolling, and speed climbing. The cheers of “Yo-Ho!” resonated through the crowd as top competitors showcased their skills.

This annual competition drew 66 men and 40 women from 16 states and nine countries, gathering over three days in Hayward, culminating on a thrilling Saturday.

Participants came equipped for every challenge, wielding custom-built chain saws and meticulously sharpened axes. Their single buck saws, crucial for the competition, demand a sharpness that can cost over $400 to maintain.

Karolina Urbanová, representing the Czech Republic, set new world records in two categories. She claimed victory in the Women’s Underhand Chop, slicing through an 11-inch (27.9 cm) white pine in an impressive 21.28 seconds. Additionally, she triumphed in the Women’s Standing Chop by cleaving through a 9-inch (22.8 cm) white pine in just 19.38 seconds.

Local talent shone as well, with Hayward’s own Meredith Ingbretson setting a world record in the Women’s Boom Run. Her remarkable sprint across and back over eight red cedar logs was completed in a swift 13.78 seconds, further elevating the excitement of the event.

While women have been competing since the inaugural competition in 1960, the events they participate in have expanded significantly, organizers said. They started just competing in log-rolling, and now participate in more than 20 timber sports events.

“When I started chopping I was chopping with the men,” said Nancy Zalewski, a competitor for 27 years who has trained others, including fellow participant Kate Witkowski.

The tradition of competition among lumberjacks began in the 1890s, according to the organization. The competition is held in the Lumberjack Bowl on the shores of Lake Hayward. In the past, the area had been a holding pond for log drives down the Namekagon River.

The lumberjack theme is ever-present with children in lumberjack socks, flannels and suspenders, and brands handing out blow-up axes and toy chain saws. Outside the competition bowl, there are wood-carving demonstrations, log-rolling practice for kids, live music, food trucks and axe-themed events.

“The culture of it I think is really wonderful,” Witkowski said. “I don’t know any other sports where the athletes support each other like we do here because it’s such a niche sport and because the gear is so hard to come by that we’re all just trying to get better.”

Tottenham Strikes £200m Power Deal: Mateus Fernandes Joins as Sandro Tonali Heads from Milan to Spurs

0

Expressing palpable excitement, Sandro Tonali openly shared that he is “ready for this new adventure” as he made his way to London to formalize a monumental £100m transfer to Tottenham. This move unfolded shortly after Spurs introduced their latest talent, Mateus Fernandes, to the public.

According to insights from Daily Mail Sport, Tonali is poised to ink a six-year contract with Tottenham, potentially valuing his weekly earnings at a notable £275,000.

Tottenham successfully negotiated a significant £92.5 million agreement with Newcastle. The transfer sum, including clauses tied to potential Champions League qualifications, could escalate to a total of £100 million.

“We had a sort of agreement with Newcastle, we talked every day and we made it,” Tonali revealed during an interview with Sky Sport Italia, shedding light on the seamless discussions between both clubs.

He continued, “They wanted the best from me, we wanted the best deal for them. We parted on excellent terms, we’re all happy and I’m ready for this new adventure.” This mutual satisfaction marks a promising start to this new chapter in his career.

Tottenham have completed the £85m signing of Mateus Fernandes as the club overhauls Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield

‘[Roberto] De Zerbi did a great job in all this and for a life choice with family after three years at Newcastle, last year our lives changed with our child’s birth so we decided to change a bit our life and De Zerbi made a great difference, he did his job and he did it very well.

The Italian international is set to become part of a new-look Tottenham midfield under head coach De Zerbi.

Tonali will become Tottenham’s record signing, surpassing the £85m they have paid to West Ham for Fernandes.

Fernandes’ move was confirmed on Thursday morning, with the midfielder admitting De Zerbi was a key factor in his decision to sign for the club.

‘I’m very excited for this next step,’ Fernandes said.

‘Spurs is a massive club and the head coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.

‘When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game.

‘I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the club.’

De Zerbi added: ‘I’ve admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play.

‘Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level.

‘Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can progress the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to make things happen in difficult moments.

‘I believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and I’m excited to start working with him.’

The additions of Tonali and Fernandes will mark a significant boost for De Zerbi as he looks to rebuild a Spurs squad which has slumped to 17th-placed finishes in each of the last two seasons.

Ex-AC Milan captain Tonali made 110 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 10 goals, since signing for the club from the Italian giants back in 2023 in a deal worth £60m.

Just months after moving to the north-east, he received a 10-month suspension after being found guilty of breaching rules on gambling by the Italian Football Federation. He subsequently missed the rest of the season and the Euros that summer.

Fernandes has impressed in the past two seasons in the Premier League, despite suffering back-to-back relegations with Southampton and West Ham.

‘West Ham United would like to thank Mateus for his service and wish him well for the future.

They have already agreed on free agents Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson while Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for £52million.

Spurs also want to add a forward and a winger with Savinho of Manchester City still in their sights.

Despite interest from Nottingham Forest and Napoli, they have yet to receive a bid for wantaway midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

Tottenham did however accept a £50million offer from Brighton to sell Croatia centre back Luka Vuskovic.

Kirsten Storms Speaks Out on Custody Fight for Daughter with Ex Brandon Barash

General Hospital alumna Kirsten Storms recently addressed the public concerning her daughter amidst a custody battle with her ex-husband, Brandon Barash.

“Please remember that we’re real people who are divorced and raising a child,” Storms, at age 42, expressed through Instagram on Sunday, July 19. “Your supportive comments mean a lot, but my daughter is now at an age where she’ll be Googling her name on the bus to school. So, I’m kindly asking for an end to the speculation around this matter.”

Storms’ relationship with her former co-star, Barash, 46, took a turn in 2016 when they parted ways. However, the headlines caught fire in April following Barash’s filing of an emergency restraining order against her, as revealed by legal documents obtained by Us at the time. Alongside this, Barash sought custody of their 12-year-old daughter, Harper Rose, in December 2025. The couple had initially agreed on a co-parenting arrangement, transitioning from California to Tennessee that same year.

In her heartfelt Instagram post, Storms opened up about the transformative role Harper has played in her life. “Everything shifted after having Harper,” she reflected. “I swear I’m done mentioning my medical situation—I’ll stick to awkward jokes. But, understanding the importance of time and what truly matters became a priority following my 2021 brain cyst and 2025 brain aneurysm, along with subsequent treatments.”

Kirsten Storms and Brandon Barash’s love story began on the set of General Hospital. Storms first stepped into the role of Maxie Jones in 2005, while Barash portrayed Johnny Zacchara from 2007 to 2013. Their real-life romance stayed mostly under wraps until it was revealed in August 2013 that the couple had secretly…

The actress also took the opportunity to comment on her current relationship with Barash. “I will briefly acknowledge that there is an ongoing situation with Brandon that will be getting sorted out (soon hopefully),” Storms wrote. “I would appreciate (and encourage) for people … not to worry about me, or think there is something larger going on, other than 2 ex-spouses dealing with a “disagreement” that WILL be resolved.”

Storms and Barash tied the knot in 2013 after falling in love while working together on General Hospital — Storms portrayed Maxie Jones while Barash played Johnny Zacchara.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES

General Hospital star Kirsten Storms‘ ex-husband, Brandon Barash, was granted a restraining order amid concerns for her mental health. Barash, 46, recently filed for an emergency restraining order, according to TMZ. The request was approved after Barash claimed that his ex-wife is exhibiting concerning behavior and he fears for their 12-year-old daughter’s well-being. In his […]

After welcoming their daughter the following year, Barash told Soap Opera Digest in April 2016 that the pair’s marriage was over. “We are splitting due to the cliché irreconcilable differences, but we’re splitting amicably,” the actor said at the time. “We have every intention of remaining a family through this and coparenting our kid and retaining a friendship in the efforts of raising her in a healthy environment.”

In Barash’s recent legal filing, he requested a change to his and Storms’ initial agreement due to multiple issues that had risen since their cross country move.

Spain Secures World Cup Victory with Ferran Torres’ Extra-Time Goal Against Argentina

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Spain displayed such mastery at this year’s World Cup that even soccer luminary Lionel Messi was left without a response.

As the final whistle blew, Spain triumphantly hoisted the coveted trophy, while a heartbroken Messi left the field with tears in his eyes.

Dominating the soccer landscape once again, Spain celebrated its World Cup victory for the second time, thanks to Ferran Torres’ unforgettable strike. His goal, perhaps the most significant of his career, secured a 1-0 victory against the former titleholders, Argentina, in Sunday’s final showdown.

“This goal was scored by 47 million people,” Torres remarked, honoring Spain’s entire population.

Though they didn’t deliver the kick, it was undoubtedly a triumph meant for all of them.

It denied Messi a second straight title in what he has indicated was his final World Cup match. Torres, a second-half substitute, pounced on a bouncing ball in the box and used his left foot to bury a shot just under the crossbar in the 106th minute.

From there, the airtight defense that dominated opponents throughout the tournament came through one final time. Spain — which also won the title in 2010 — allowed only one goal in eight matches in this World Cup run, setting a record for fewest goals allowed by a champion.

“I feel pride, to be honest,” said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, who at 65 is now the oldest man to lead a team to a World Cup title. “Accompanying them on this journey is an honor.”

Spain gets a World Cup 1st

This title, combined with the Women’s World Cup won by Spain in 2023, makes the European nation the first to hold both the men’s and women’s titles simultaneously.

“I feel sad,” said Messi, who was moved to tears after receiving his runner-up medal and staring into the crowd at Argentina supporters. “But I am aware that we played our hearts out.”

The score indicates this match was close, but only one team was in command.

Spain took the game’s first 20 shots on goal before Argentina — desperate for an equalizer — got its first attempt off in the second half of extra time. Spain took nine of the game’s first 10 corner kicks, and only a World Cup final-record 12 saves by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez gave the 2022 champions a shot at going back-to-back.

“Dibu was nothing short of exceptional,” de la Fuente said, referring to Argentina’s keeper by his nickname.

Spain is now unbeaten in its last 38 matches — 29 wins, nine draws — and now is the outright holder of the longest such streak by any European men’s team ever. Italy went 37 matches (28 wins, nine draws) from October 2018 through September 2021, before Spain ended that streak.

And for the last two-plus years, nobody has beaten Spain. Not even Messi. An Argentina team that was the kings of the late-game rally in this tournament had no answer this time.

“We lost the game, and we accept that,” Messi said. “That doesn’t mean that we will forget everything we’ve done so far, so I’d like to thank my people, my players and the country. I can tell them that we played our hearts out.”

Spain survives a late push

Messi took a corner kick with about four minutes left before the final whistle and the ball took a fortunate skip toward substitute Giuliano Simeone — who sent it high and over the crossbar, holding his head in disbelief afterward.

“When you have Messi on the other side, well, you are nervous,” Torres said. “At the end of the day, we always depended on us. We always come up with our football, and we showed it again.”

There was some pushing and shoving after the final whistle, which was quickly cleaned up and Spain commenced its celebration as most Argentina players sat solemnly on the turf. Cooler heads prevailed, and Spain’s players lined up minutes later to form an honor guard of sorts for Argentina’s squad to walk through on its way to the stage for the runner-up medals from President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“I think now I’m in a cloud,” said Spain midfielder Rodri, the Golden Ball winner as the tournament’s best player.

Argentina was forced to finish the match with only 10 players after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in second-half stoppage time after getting his second yellow card. Fernandez was carded for a reckless play that sent Spain defender Pau Cubarsi cartwheeling into the air, and the card came out immediately.

Defense led Spain to a title

It was the 104th and last match of the biggest World Cup ever, a 48-team event that played out over the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Because there were more matches than any previous World Cup, it was no surprise that there were more goals than all other editions — more than 300, nearly three per match.

Except, of course, when Spain was involved. Spain’s plan was simple and flawless: Hold the ball as much as possible, denying opponents any hint of chances.

It worked, all the way to the end.

“There is sadness, but also the knowledge that we gave it our all,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. “I could say a lot about how we got here, but it’s not worth it. I am eternally grateful to these guys; they competed right to the end. The other team was better.”

Spain had to go through the game’s greatest player — maybe ever — to prove that.

Messi is 39 and the math certainly suggests that the Inter Miami star is at the end of his international career. There have been hints — such as Messi himself declaring that a home World Cup qualifying match against Venezuela last year would be his final competitive contest for Argentina on his nation’s soil.

“We would have loved to have won, but I’m thankful,” Messi said. “‘Thanks’ is the only word I have — and sadness.”

He retired from the national team after losing a Copa America final to Chile — in the same stadium he played in Sunday — a decade ago, then came back a few weeks later after changing his mind.

Good thing he did, because in that decade he went from superstar to absolute icon.

There was the World Cup title in 2022. There were two Copa America titles, the first in 2021 and the second in 2024. He won Argentina’s player of the year award 16 times in a span of 19 years, first winning it as a teenager and continuing to win it all the way into his late 30s.

He’s a legend within the game and on all corners of the globe. But Spain was better Sunday.

“I spoke to my players, and they said: ‘Look, we’ve won everything, coach. We’ve won everything,’” de la Fuente said. “And that is beautiful.”

A final unlike any other

The spectacle was not limited to simply soccer. There was a halftime show, a first for FIFA. There were a ton of celebrities there from stage, screen and sports: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Cillian Murphy, Daniel Craig, Stephen Curry, Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Brunson, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, Carlos Alcaraz, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and dozens more.

They came to see a show. So did 80,000 other people, not to mention perhaps as many as 2 billion watching around the globe.

Spain didn’t disappoint. No team has won back-to-back men’s World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962, and Spain kept Argentina from pulling off that repeat.

“As I told the lads before the game, we have to go for the game, we need to face them, we have to look to their eyes and say we want this game,” Rodri said. “And then, life gives you the World Cup or not.”

Spain took it instead.

Police Report: Children Found Unsupervised in 14th-Floor Apartment

0

In a troubling case from Missouri, two parents face allegations of leaving their young children unsupervised in a precarious situation. The children, just three and five years old, were reportedly abandoned for several hours in a 14th-floor apartment that had a gaping hole where a window should have been, exposing them to the risk of a fatal fall.

Desiree Ching

Desiree Ching, aged 32, along with 39-year-old David Croft, have been formally charged with two counts each of child endangerment. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department conducted a welfare inspection on July 13 after being alerted to potential danger at the residence, located on the 600 block of N. Grand Boulevard.

Eyewitnesses described a heart-stopping scene as one of the young children could be seen perilously perched at the open window, a harrowing sight that prompted the rapid police response.

Desiree Ching, 32, and David Croft, 39, are each facing two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded on July 13 for a welfare check at an apartment building in the 600 block of N. Grand Boulevard.

Witnesses said they saw one of the children hanging from the open window.

Cops went inside the apartment after knocking on the door but receiving no response. They saw a bedroom door that was locked from the outside to ensure no one could escape.

Inside the room, cops found two kids ages 5 and 3 who were “completely naked and alone.”

“The walls of the room are covered in feces and there is a broken window which exposed the children to a 14-foot drop,” cops wrote.

Officers determined it was “clear” that the kids were locked in the room for “at least several hours.” The children were taken to the hospital for treatment. Ching arrived at the hospital and identified herself as the mother of the children. The affidavit does not say where Ching went after leaving the apartment.

She was arrested and taken to the St. Louis Justice Center, where she remains without bond.

Croft told cops he was the father when he arrived at the apartment. He was arrested but later released on his own recognizance after it was revealed that he left the kids in the custody of Ching when he went to work in the morning.

Cops did not say what happened to the kids after they were taken to the hospital.

Enzo Fernandez Faces World Cup Heartbreak as Red Card Alters Argentina’s Final Dreams

0

Enzo Fernández experienced a full spectrum of emotions during the World Cup.

Just five days earlier, Fernández was lauded as Argentina’s hero, having salvaged their fate with a dramatic late equalizer in the semifinal face-off against England.

Yet, on the grandest platform in sports, his fortunes flipped rapidly as he shifted from being celebrated to being criticized in mere moments.

In the dying moments of the second half, his red card didn’t just leave Argentina a player short, but it also erased their best chance to claim victory, as they eventually succumbed to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a 1-0 deficit in extra time.

Reflecting on the incident, Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, noted, “Enzo’s dismissal… I believe the first yellow card was unnecessary, but that’s the way it is. Naturally, no one expects a second yellow in such a setting – it’s the World Cup Final, and I think certain aspects could have been handled differently.”

After already struggling to create anything on offense against Spain’s suffocating press, Argentina had failed to register a single shot in regulation.

Referee Slavko Vincic shows Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez a red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final match against Spain.

As the game was headed to extra time, Argentina was hoping to survive and find one fleeting moment on the counterattack to steal victory from the jaws of defeat against Spain.

Then Fernández lost his composure.

In the 82nd minute, Fernández was shown a yellow card for dissent after protesting a non-foul decision by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic.

It was a needless booking from one of Argentina’s emotional leaders, but it would soon become more significant than anyone realized.

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez (24) fouls Spain defender Pau Cubarsi (22), sending Cubarsi airborne.

Ten minutes later, disaster struck.

As Pau Cubarsí chased a loose ball near midfield, Fernández lunged into a reckless challenge that left Vincic with little choice but to show the Argentine midfielder a second yellow and in turn, a red card. Argentina was down to 10 men with stoppage time winding down and an additional 30 minutes of extra time still left to play.

Fernández walked slowly toward the tunnel as Spanish supporters erupted while thousands of Argentine fans stood silent inside MetLife Stadium, fully aware that the mountain in front of their team had suddenly become almost impossible to climb.

Fernández became just the sixth player ever sent off in a FIFA World Cup final, joining one of the tournament’s most exclusive and infamous lists.

Rather than being remembered for his thunderbolt against England that carried Argentina into the championship match, his tournament will forever include one of the defining mistakes of the final itself.

It’s unlikely Argentina, completely dominated by Spain all day long, would have won anyway, but Fernández’s one reckless challenge all but extinguished them.
