Wildfire Smoke Chokes Central Illinois: Health Concerns and Air Quality Alerts Surge

If you happened to be in Central Illinois this Sunday, you might have noticed an unusual haze blanketing the sky. This wasn’t any ordinary fog; it was a result of wildfire smoke traveling all the way from Canada, significantly deteriorating the air quality and making it risky to breathe.

The smoke mingled with the sun’s UV rays and oxygen in the air, creating complex chemical reactions. This combination not only caused a murkiness that reduced visibility but also left a lingering scent reminiscent of burning plastic.

Health authorities are urging residents to stay indoors whenever possible. For those who must venture outside, they advise wearing N-95 masks for protection. One local in Champaign recounted their experience with the worsening conditions on Sunday.

“As I stepped out of my house this morning, I initially didn’t register the warnings my son had given me about the distant fires. I caught a whiff of smoke and then noticed a thick haze surrounding me. It suddenly hit me—this was all the way from Canada. I couldn’t believe it,” shared Ginny Unger-Freeman, a resident of Champaign.

There have also been a couple of pool closings in the area because of the smoke in the air. You can find out more about those closures here.

Celebrity Estates Listed for Sale Amidst Tragic Events

Celebrity landscapes have been shadowed by profound loss over the past year, with Hollywood bidding farewell to several beloved figures. These departures encompass those who succumbed to prolonged illnesses, those whose endings were heartbreakingly abrupt, and even instances of murder and suicide. As the industry mourns, the echoes of these losses reverberate through the real estate market, resulting in poignant property listings and shifts. Over recent months, three such listings have emerged, tied to the untimely deaths of prominent personalities.

Among these notable figures is Brandon Blackstock, the talent manager known for his marriage to renowned singer Kelly Clarkson. He passed away in August 2025 at just 48, following a valiant fight against melanoma, leaving fans reeling. Close to a year after his passing, the Montana retreat he held dear has become available for purchase. Nestled in the serene backdrop of Butte, Montana, this expansive estate has been listed with a price tag of $2.9 million, offering a glimpse into the personal world he cherished.

Hollywood has suffered through some pretty significant, high-profile celebrity deaths in the last 12 months. There have been deaths from long illnesses, tragic passings that seemingly struck suddenly and multiple murders and suicide deaths. With those deaths have come some very sad and very tragic celebrity real estate listings and movements. In the last few months, three real estate listings have come online after the tragically young passings of notable names.

Brandon Blackstock’s Montana Ranch Hits the Market a Year After his Death

Brandon Blackstock, the talent manager and former husband of celebrity songstress, Kelly Clarkson, died in August 2025 at age 48 following a battle with melanoma; his death shocked fans. Almost one year later, the Montana property he considered his dream home has been listed. The sprawling property in Butte, Montana, hit the market at $2.9 million.

Blackstock purchased the ranch in April 2022, just one month after his divorce from Clarkson was finalized. The 6,438-square-foot estate sits on more than 41 acres and features soaring ceilings and panoramic mountain views. He reportedly purchased the property, with career ranching aspirations, for $1.8 million.

The Montana home turned out to be Blackstock’s last chapter, though he certainly intended it to be his next great move. Prior to the Montana home, Blackstock and Clarkson shared an $8.5 million Encino mansion. It sold for $8.24 million in 2021 amid their divorce. A Nashville-area estate they owned together was also sold for $6.3 million.

Katherine Short’s Beachwood Canyon Cottage is for Sale

Katherine Hartley Short, the eldest daughter of comedian Martin Short, died by suicide on February 23, 2026, at age 42. A social worker and mental health advocate who worked with the charity Bring Change 2 Mind, Katherine was found at her home in the Beachwood Canyon area of the Hollywood Hills.

Short purchased the Cape Cod-style cottage for his daughter in 2014. He paid just over $1.1 million for the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home at the time, and Katherine lived there solo for more than a decade. Now, the property has been listed for sale at approximately $1.8 million. The listing is being handled by longtime agent Steven Moritz.

Martin Short, no stranger to loss after losing his wife to cancer decades ago, openly discussed his daughter’s passing in recent weeks. He noted that she worked through difficult mental health struggles until she could no longer carry on.

James Van Der Beek’s Former Beverly Hills Home is Available for Rent

James Van Der Beek’s former Beverly Hills rental has returned to the market. The rental listing went live five months after the “Dawson’s Creek” star died at age 48 from colorectal cancer. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom Spanish-style home at 333 South Roxbury Drive is now listed for rent at $13,950 per month.

Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, carried out a massive redesign on the home that was later featured in Architectural Digest before their move to Texas. It was widely believed they owned the property. In reality, the couple never actually owned the home; they leased it. The home is registered to a trust tied to billionaire real estate investors and former Los Angeles Clippers owners Donald and Rochelle Sterling, and has been for years.

Notably, the family’s more recent home, a 36-acre Texas ranch in Spicewood, was purchased by Van Der Beek for $4.76 million just weeks before his death. That purchase, made with financial help from celebrity friends including Steven Spielberg, allowed the family housing security as Van Der Beek’s death approached. His widow and children still reside there.

117th NAACP National Convention Launches in Chicago, Emphasizing Voter Engagement for Upcoming Midterms

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — McCormick Place is bustling with activity as the 117th NAACP National Convention takes center stage, gathering thousands of civil rights advocates, community leaders, and elected officials nationwide. The event is set to ignite discussions around civic engagement, voting rights, and inspiring upcoming generations of voters.

In the midst of America’s 250th birthday celebration, Chicago proudly plays host to this year’s convention under the resonant theme “We the People.”

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

NAACP officials point out that this theme is selected to shine a spotlight on the significance of voter participation and civic involvement.

“The theme serves as a powerful reminder that we the people hold the key to influence, and without peace in America, our power is at risk,” explained Dominic Hawkins, who serves as vice president of communications for the NAACP.

With the November midterms on the horizon, the organization has rolled out a robust $20 million campaign aimed at mobilizing voters to participate in the electoral process.

“We’re here strategizing to turn out black voters, but to also to understand what our policy priorities are to fight for the future so this next 250 years is more representative for the people who live here in these United States,” Hawkins said.

Attendees from across the country said the message is especially important as the nation heads toward the midterm elections.

“We are in a state of emergency, as I see it, when it comes to our young people. It is time for us as the adults to pass the baton over to the younger generation,” said Jacqueline Scott of Canton, Ohio.

Pam Smith of Starr County, Ohio, said voting remains a critical way for people to make their voices heard.

“Your vote is your voice, and so when people realize that they start speaking up and using that voice,” Smith said.

“I think right now, ‘We the people’ are tired,” she added.

Gov. JB Pritzker also referenced this year’s theme as he addressed convention attendees.

“Generation after generation of members of this organization of NAACP have stood up, have organized, have marched,” Pritzker said.

“And we need you now more than ever.”

The five-day convention continues through Wednesday at McCormick Place.

Tragic Bulldog Drowning at ‘Disneyland for Dogs’ Resort Ignites Police Investigation

0

In an unimaginable turn of events, a couple in California faced heartbreak instead of the anticipated joy of reuniting with their furry friend at a facility often described as “Disneyland for dogs.” Their cherished English bulldog’s life was tragically cut short when they were informed that the pet had drowned while under the facility’s care.

This tragic occurrence has sparked a full police investigation, accompanied by a public apology from Camp Canine. The facility openly admitted its failure to protect the pet, acknowledging, “We failed in our responsibility to keep their dog safe.”

Bruce, a spirited 1-year-old English bulldog belonging to Chris and Ashley Merz from Ventura, met this untimely end on Thursday while staying at the Santa Barbara-based boarding and daycare center.

The Santa Barbara Police Department revealed to News Media that law enforcement officials had arrived at the facility located in the 800 block of East Montecito Street around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, responding to distressing reports of a dog drowning.

As part of the preliminary investigation, officers conducted interviews with both the grieving owners and those staff members who were on-site when this unfortunate accident occurred.

“The Santa Barbara Police Department is committed to a thorough investigation into this matter,” the department said in a statement to News Media. “The case is actively being investigated by our Criminal Investigative Unit and Animal Control Team.”

According to Ashley Merz’s mother, Alison Genet, who spoke with local outlet Noozhawk, Bruce is believed to have drowned sometime between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The family says they were never notified about his death before arriving to pick him up around 3:30 p.m.

Genet told the outlet the family was instead informed of Bruce’s death when they arrived at Camp Canine.

Bruce had attended Camp Canine and trained there for about six months, according to Genet.

She said English bulldogs are not natural swimmers and that Bruce was typically placed with small or medium-sized dogs because of his size. However, she said he somehow ended up in the large-dog yard, which contains two unfenced pools.

According to Genet, Camp Canine’s owners acknowledged Bruce was not supposed to be in that yard but were unable to explain how he ended up there.

A GoFundMe created by Ashley’s sister, Savannah, to help cover Bruce’s cremation, memorial expenses and legal costs alleges the family’s pain was compounded by how the incident was handled.

“What was meant to be a normal day at Camp Canine turned into tragedy when their dog drowned while in the facility’s care,” the fundraiser states.

“The pain was compounded by the way the situation was handled—they were not contacted when the incident occurred, and only learned of their dog’s passing later that day when they arrived to pick him up.”

The fundraiser also alleges Bruce’s body was returned to his owners in “a storage container in the trunk of a vehicle” and says the family later learned he had not been transported to an emergency veterinary hospital before they were notified.

“My sister and brother-in-law are now left grieving the unimaginable loss of a beloved family member, while trying to understand exactly what happened that day,” Savannah wrote.

Camp Canine, which says it has served the Santa Barbara area for 40 years and describes itself on its website as the “Disneyland for dogs,” publicly apologized Saturday in a statement posted to Instagram.

“There are no words that can fully express the heartbreak we feel following the tragic loss of a beloved dog while in our care earlier this week,” General Manager Jayne Sigman wrote.

“A family entrusted us with a cherished member of their family, and they are now living with an unimaginable loss because we failed in our responsibility to keep their dog safe.

“We are profoundly sorry. Our hearts are with them as they grieve, and we know that no words can lessen the pain they are experiencing.”

The facility said it has temporarily suspended daycare operations while it reviews its facility, safety procedures and emergency response protocols.

“It is our responsibility to learn from this loss, to make meaningful changes, and to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again,” the statement continued. “That work has already begun.”

News Media reached out to Camp Canine for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Yankees’ Troubles Mirror 2025 Mets: A Cautionary Tale of Decline

0

The New York Yankees are holding onto the second-best record in the American League, inching closer to the top position than they’ve been in over three weeks. However, despite this achievement, the atmosphere surrounding the team feels far from triumphant.

On Sunday, the Yankees managed to snatch a win in the final game of a three-day showdown against the reigning champion Dodgers by clinching a narrow 2-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. Yet, even as they celebrated this hard-fought win, the Yankees couldn’t shake off their most pressing concern. Throughout the entire weekend, they managed to score just five runs.

Aaron Judge’s importance to the team cannot be overstated, but unlike basketball, baseball shouldn’t depend so heavily on one individual. Nonetheless, his absence in the lineup is felt profoundly, akin to a fish deprived of water. Unfortunately, Judge is still far from rejoining the team as his recovery from fractured ribs is slated to take several more weeks.

A gentle reminder to the Yankees: the season hasn’t paused to wait for Judge’s return. While the Rays’ frequent losses have allowed the Yankees to inch closer in the AL East standings, the Red Sox are riding high on a 13-game winning streak, and the Orioles have won seven straight. Suddenly, the AL features seven teams with records at .500 or better, turning the league into a hotspot of fierce competition.

World Cup Fans Flood Times Square Amidst Unprecedented Turnout

0

On Sunday night, New York City’s Times Square witnessed a flurry of arrests following Spain’s thrilling World Cup final victory over Argentina, which took place across the Hudson River. The atmosphere quickly shifted as celebrations gave way to chaos.

Exclusive images captured by The Daily Mail revealed that multiple revelers ended up handcuffed by police amid the euphoria. Ecstatic Spain supporters had flooded the midtown-Manhattan streets, turning the area near a public viewing party into an impromptu dance floor.

While the NYPD has not yet divulged specifics about the arrests, a spokesperson for the department informed The Daily Mail late Sunday night that the exact number of those detained remained uncertain as processing of the suspects was still underway.

According to the spokesperson, those taken into custody are primarily charged with disorderly conduct, reflecting the rowdy celebrations that ensued.

One striking image shows a fan sporting a Lamine Yamal jersey being escorted by two officers. Also detained was a man clad in a pink t-shirt and matching shorts, in addition to a shirtless individual captured on Instagram video, amplifying the chaotic scene.

Other Spain fans were seen raising replica trophies, blowing horns and crowd surfing in the wake of the country’s second World Cup win.

And while many Spanish flags were being waved in Times Square, there were also several Palestinian flags as well, which isn’t a major surprise. Spain’s government has been largely supportive of refugees in war-ravaged Gaza, while Argentinian president Javier Milei has built close ties with Israel.

Spain fans, not of all whom hail from the Iberian Peninsula, swarmed from one city tourist attraction to another following the 1-0 victory.

In lower Manhattan, red-clad revelers took over the city’s High Line, which is a park raised on an old rail line 30 feet above the city streets.

But Sunday’s most hectic scene was Times Square, which had been a beehive of activity throughout the tournament. Fans who couldn’t afford four-figure ticket prices had dozens of watch parties to choose from throughout the five boroughs, but no option proved as popular as Times Square’s seemingly endless array of towering electronic billboards.

And on Sunday, Times Square appeared to lean heavily in favor of the defending-champion Argentinians, at least before the match.

‘We came across a few Spaniards but I don’t look at them,’ the blue-and-white-clad Florencia Luzinin, 30, told the AFP.

Afterwards, many of those Argentina fans appeared devastated, regardless of whether or not they actually claimed Argentinian citizenship.

While America does have Spanish and Argentinian immigrants, those diasporas are far smaller than others in the country, which may have led Sunday’s turnout to be slightly smaller than some of the tournament’s previous matches.

‘It’s been slightly overshadowed,’ Howie Ray, 42, told the AFP. ‘I think there was fatigue after all the games of the group stage and then the US getting eliminated. Spain and Argentina are also relatively small immigrant populations.

‘You also have the regular folks leave for the weekend during the summer.’

Many visitors from Spain and Argentina did cross the Atlantic for the World Cup, but rather than pack into Times Square, they decided to splurge on tickets.

‘Money comes back,’ Buenos Aires resident Manuel Lopez Maccotta told The Associated Press. ‘This is once in a lifetime. You´re seeing the best player in the world [Lionel Messi] in his last World Cup. Money is worthless compared to this.’

And how much did he pay?

‘Almost 10K in American money,’ said Maccotta, whose friend got off relatively easy with a $5,000 ticket.

‘I bought the ticket before the World Cup final,’ Santiago Burcaco told the AP.

Argentina and Spain fans were comrades in this struggle.

Madrid’s Curro Sanchez spent $8,000 on his ticket, and will now be staying in the city through Thursday.

‘Had a big, big, big fight with my wife,’ Sanchez told the AP. ‘At the end of the day, she understood.’

Top Morning Exercises to Boost All-Day Energy for Those Over 60

0

Feeling low on energy after hitting 60? Kickstart your day with these four easy exercises to boost your vitality!

>

Afternoon energy slumps are a common complaint among my clients aged 60 and above. Many of them lament this as an unavoidable byproduct of aging. With nearly 40 years of experience as a personal trainer and serving the last two decades as the director and co-founder of TRAINFITNESS, the leading fitness education provider in the UK, I’ve gathered some insights.

The reality is that age isn’t the sole culprit. A mix of minimal muscle engagement, poor breathing habits, slight dehydration, and prolonged sitting contributes more significantly to that drained feeling. Implementing four concise morning exercises can invigorate your energy levels throughout the day much more effectively than any caffeine fix.

Why Energy Fades After 60

Many experience a noticeable dip mid-morning around 10 or 11 AM, a larger energy drop after lunch, and another decline as the late afternoon transitions into evening. While most chalk it up to aging, it’s seldom just about getting older. Addressing lifestyle factors can often make a dramatic difference.

The other issue is that most over 60s wake up already flat. They’ve slept, but the body hasn’t been asked to do anything demanding in weeks or months, so the systems that would normally produce a burst of morning energy stay dormant. The nervous system doesn’t switch on properly, the heart rate stays low, and the day starts on the back foot.

Underneath all of that is muscle loss. Muscle is where most of the body’s energy production happens, and less muscle means less energy generation across the day. This is why strength training in this age group changes energy so dramatically. It’s rebuilding the engine.

If You Can Do This Many Step-Ups Without Stopping After 60, Your Leg Power Is Elite

Why Mornings Matter

The body wakes with a natural cortisol rise, which peaks about 30 minutes after you get up. That cortisol is what should give you the burst of energy that carries you into the morning. If you meet it with movement, it works exactly as designed. If you meet it with sitting on the sofa, the cortisol dissipates and the day starts flat.

Morning movement also sets the tone for the nervous system. Getting the heart rate up briefly first thing tells the whole body that it’s daytime and it needs to be active. Skip that signal and the body carries an evening-mode sluggishness into the working hours.

There’s also the effect on circulation. Overnight, blood flow slows, tissues stiffen, and joint fluid thickens. A short bout of movement in the first 20 minutes of the day flushes all of that through and delivers oxygen everywhere it should be. The knock-on effect is felt for hours.

Movement Versus Coffee

Coffee gives you a fast, sharp lift by blocking adenosine, which is the chemical that builds up in the brain and makes you feel tired. It works well as a jump-start, but it’s a temporary trick. Once the caffeine wears off, the adenosine that’s been queuing up floods in all at once, which is the classic coffee crash.

Exercise raises energy by a completely different mechanism. Movement increases blood flow, wakes the nervous system, releases endorphins, and gently lifts body temperature. Those effects don’t crash. They gently taper across the day, and if you’ve moved for even five minutes in the morning, you’re still feeling the benefit at 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

Can it replace coffee? Yes, for most people, at least for the morning lift. You might still enjoy a coffee for the taste, but the energy job is done more sustainably by the movement. I’ve had many clients over 60 tell me they’ve naturally cut their coffee habit in half without meaning to, once the morning routine took hold.

For anyone who wants both, the combination is fine. Move first, then have the coffee. The order matters. Coffee before movement often means you’re relying on the caffeine rather than getting the body to produce its own energy, which is the whole point.

4 Chair Exercises That Rebuild Lower Back Strength Faster Than Gym Machines After 60

Dillon Brooks Calls Out LeBron, Luka, and Steph as NBA’s Biggest Complainers

0

Dillon Brooks didn’t shy away from taking aim at some of the basketball’s big names like Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Steph Curry.

When questioned about which players top his list of basketball’s most frequent complainers, Brooks, who dons the Suns jersey, quickly mentioned Doncic, James, and Curry alongside Jaren Jackson and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“Who’s the first to pop into my head? Without a doubt, Luka. Luke’s a notorious complainer,” Brooks remarked. “And Curry, I’ve actually challenged him before—planted one right in his chest during a contest.”

Interestingly, Doncic has acknowledged Brooks as the NBA’s premier trash talker and relishes the opportunity to face off against him.

The rivalry runs deep between Doncic and Brooks, who once clashed regularly when Doncic played for the Mavericks and Brooks was part of the Rockets roster.

In his career, Doncic has thrived against him, averaging 29.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game.

Curry has enjoyed playing against Brooks in his historic career and considers him a friendly on-court rival. During a December game last season, Brooks earned a Flagrant 1 foul for striking Curry on a play. Curry later jokingly called the play “bush league.”

Brooks went on to think about who else he considers a complainer and quickly remembered James, saying “LeBron, for sure.”

Since the 2023 NBA playoffs, Brooks and James have had one of the NBA’s most heated feuds. They had an infamous staredown during pregame warmups.

Since then, the two have always battled against one another.

During the Western Conference semifinals, Brooks was spotted sitting courtside during Game 4 of the Lakers-Thunder matchup.

Brooks was seen laughing at James after he missed a free throw.

Next season, the Brooks-James rivalry will enter a new chapter because James is a free agent for the first time in eight years and will not return to the Lakers.
