Gainesville man charged with terrorism after posting threat to shoot up middle school on Instagram

0

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Daniel Julio Dominguez, 31, was arrested last night and charged with terrorism and making threats of terrorism after allegedly posting an Instagram video in which he said he wanted to shoot up a middle school on a weekend so police would kill him.

At about 2:00 p.m. on October 19, Dominguez allegedly posted a video on Instagram in which he said he planned to shoot up a middle school in Alachua County on Saturday or Sunday. He was sitting in front of a book shelf, with an AR-15 rifle on his right and a handgun on his left. In the video, he allegedly said he didn’t want to hurt anyone; he just wanted to shoot at the school in the hope that police would respond and kill him. Statements in the video reportedly included, “I have decided to take up arms and attack the state. I intend to target a middle school, particularly the middle school I went to” and “I will be going on a Saturday or a Sunday when no children are there, with the intention of getting off as many NATO .556 rounds from my AR-15 at the building.” Various disclaimers were attached to the video, including one that said, “This is an Art piece.”

Florida Department of Law Enforcement analysts discovered the video and contacted Gainesville Police Department (GPD); GPD officers were able to identify Dominguez from the name on the Instagram account and saw that he previously lived near Parker Elementary. Officers believed that Parker or a nearby school could be the intended target, so the information was forwarded to GPD Patrol Operations. A ping on his cell phone was requested, and he was taken into custody in the area of the 1800 block of NE 23rd Avenue at about 8:40 p.m. last night.

While being transported to GPD, Dominguez reportedly said the guns were in his bedroom at his parents’ house in Valwood. In an interview at the station, Dominguez was asked if he knew why he was there, and he reportedly said it was because of his video. Post Miranda, he asked for a lawyer.

Since the house in Valwood is outside the Gainesville city limits, GPD officers and Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies went to the house and made contact with Dominguez’ parents. After conducting a safety sweep of the home, officers determined that the video had been filmed in the house; an AR-15-style weapon was reportedly found in plain view during the sweep.

Dominguez has lived in Alachua County his whole life and has no criminal history; court records describe him as unemployed/disabled. Judge Thomas Jaworski set bail at $2,000,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Natalee Holloway's Mom Says Daughter "Fought Like Hell" Before Joran van der Sloot Killed Her

0

After Joran van der Sloot confessed to murdering Natalee Holloway in 2005 as part of a plea deal this week, giving chilling details, the Alabama teen’s mother said she’s “proud” that her daughter “fought like hell” against her killer.

In a recorded October 3 confession that was released on Thursday, van der Sloot said that he had hoped to have sex with Holloway after meeting her during her Aruba vacation 18 years ago, and made a move on the beach. She turned him down, and when he persisted, she kneed him in the crotch, he said.

“When she knees me in the crotch I get up on the beach and I kick her — extremely hard — in the face,” he said.

Van der Sloot went on to describe bashing Holloway’s head in with a cinderblock, adding that, “Even though it’s dark I can see her face is collapsed.”

Beth Holloway says she’s proud of Natalee Holloway for fighting off Joran van der Sloot

The victim’s mom, Beth Holloway, said she recognized her daughter’s feistiness through van der Sloot’s vivid description of the struggle between Holloway and himself.

“Yes, I said, ‘That’s her,'” Beth told CBS News. “She fought like hell. I think she fought like hell with her killer.”

“She was killed just by standing her ground,” Beth added. “I was so proud of her.”

As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, van der Sloot, a Dutch national, pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud charges related to a 2010 attempt to sell information about the location of Holloway’s remains to her mother in exchange for $250,000. The plea deal was contingent on van der Sloot providing details of Holloway’s disappearance.

On Thursday, the audio of his confession was released, in which he recounted how he bludgeoned Holloway with a cinderblock after she refused his sexual advances, then pushed her body out to sea.

“It’s just blistering to your soul, and it hurts so deeply,” Beth told CBS News of hearing van der Sloot’s  confession.

“A far as I’m concerned it’s over, it’s over,” Beth told reporters outside court Wednesday.

“Today, I can tell you with certainty after eighteen years, that as far as I’m concerned, Natalee’s case is solved,” Beth added Wednesday. “It is over. Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder. He is the killer.

On Wednesday, 36-year-old van der Sloot was sentenced to 20 years in prison, which he’s set to serve concurrently with his 28-year sentence in Peru for killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores in 2010.

“I feel like I have the power and the victory over him because all he’s gonna hear is that jail cell door slam to remind him he’s a double murderer,” Beth told Birmingham station WVTM 13, referring to van der Sloot.

The Night Natalee Holloway Disappeared

Holloway vanished on May 30, 2005, while on a trip to Aruba with her classmates. The 18-year-old was celebrating her graduation from high school. Her classmates said she was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot. Despite being a prime suspect in the case for years, he was never formally charged in her disappearance.

Due to a 12-year statute of limitations for murder in Aruba, van der Sloot won’t faces charges in Holloway’s killing.

In court Wednesday, van der Sloot apologized to the Holloway family and his own family.

“I am not the same kind of person today as I was then, I have given my heart to Jesus Christ,” he said.

Beth told WTVM that her daughter’s killer’s words did not seem genuine, saying, “I heard it, but I feel like it’s a hollow apology because I don’t feel like a double-murderer and someone who can extort money and make a mother of a child you murdered pay you money, so it felt scripted.”

Holloway’s father, Dave Holloway, called his daughter’s killer “evil personified,” WTVM reported.

“We are living every parent’s nightmare,” he said in a statement. “Today and every day, please hug your children in honor and loving memory of our daughter, Natalee Ann Holloway.”

Florida Man Convicted of Murdering Wife After Fighting Over Appearing on Home Renovation Show

0

A Florida man has been found guilty of murdering his wife in 2018 after she refused to go on a home improvement reality TV show.

After a six-day trial, a jury found David Tronnes, 55, guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday in the violent killing of his 39-year-old wife Shanti Cooper-Tronnes, the State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida said in a press release.

Cooper-Tronnes was beaten and strangled to death in the home she shared with Tronnes on April 24, 2018, according to the state attorney’s office. The couple were having marital disputes over money and ownership of their house.

David Tronnes was angry that Shanti Cooper-Tronnes didn’t want to appear on Zombie House Renovations

Cooper-Tronnes also rejected Tronnes’ request to appear on the home renovation show, Zombie House Renovations, prosectors saidTronnes had spent thousands of dollars fixing up the house in hopes of making on to the reality show.

“Cooper-Tronnes’ refusal to appear on the show upset Tronnes to the point that it led to her murder,” the state attorney’s office said.

“She was brutally attacked and then strangled,” prosecutors said in court Wednesday, according to ClickOrlando.com.

Prosecutors said last week that the 39-year-old was beaten so badly that her skull cracked, according to NBC affiliate WESH 2.

“There’s blood all over her face, a huge wound, bruising around her neck,” they said.

David Tronnes tried to clean up murder scene

The state attorney’s office said that Tronnes tried to clean up the site of the murder before police arrived. He told authorities that he found Cooper-Tronnes partially submerged and bleeding in the bathtub after he’d been cleaning much of the day and walking his dogs.

Prosecutors presented evidence that they said showed that Cooper-Tronnes was killed in a bedroom. A medical examiner testified that the victim was found with injuries to her face and bruises on her eyes. They also said that blood evidence contradicted Tronnes’ claim that he found his wife in the bathtub.

“He wiped down the bed rail, he brought water out to those blood stains in an attempt to clean it up. The shower it was dry, that’s the testimony from law enforcement,” prosectors said, according to ClickOrlando.com.

“From the beginning, investigators with the Orlando Police Department noticed inaccuracies with Tronnes’ story,” the state attorney’s office said. “Investigators also noted Tronnes showed little remorse during his interrogation and never shed a tear over his wife’s death. Detectives did their due diligence and once they collected all the necessary evidence, they arrested Tronnes four months later and charged him with murder.”

Tronnes was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

Members of Cooper-Tronnes’ family spoke before the sentencing, including the victim’s son.

“Early 2018, she was taken from me and my family,” the victim’s son said, according to WESH. “It’s like a hole in my heart that I can’t fill or fix. She didn’t die peacefully. She did not deserve anything that happened to her that night. My family and I have been waiting for about five years for justice. I miss her so much. I would never have thought the day before was the last time I’d see my mother alive.”

Nursing Student Slain by Doctor Ex-Boyfriend Who Allegedly Abducted Her, Shot Her at Truck Stop, Then Killed Himself

0

A Michigan nursing student was allegedly abducted and fatally shot by a man family members described as her abusive ex-boyfriend, who later admitted to his parents that he killed her before taking his own life.

Gina Bryant, a 25-year-old from Macomb Township, was shot and killed by her ex, Justin Wendling, a 26-year-old doctor from the village of Holly, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Wendling was a medical resident at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township, according to The Detroit News.

Bryant left her medical assistant job on October 12 to go home for lunch but never returned, prompting her boss to notify authorities, her sister Angelica Gintner told The Detroit News.

“Coworkers became concerned when she did not return to work following her lunch break and they began receiving odd text messages from her phone,” the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said of the call that came in for a missing person.

Justin Wendling was Waiting at Gina Bryant’s Home

The sheriff’s office added that it was suspected that Bryant was with Wendling. Their investigation “revealed that the suspect had been waiting at the victim’s home when she returned for lunch,” the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office stated, adding that “a neighbor’s surveillance video showed the suspect leading the victim to his vehicle” at around 1:42 p.m. on October 12.

The next day, on October 13, Wendling’s parents got a phone call from him and told law enforcement officials that their son and the victim were in LaSalle, Illinois, at the time. “The suspect also stated he had killed the victim and was going to kill himself,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Surveillance video and witnesses at a truck stop in LaSalle “confirmed that the suspect had shot and killed the victim” at around midnight on October 13, authorities said.

Wendling then fled to Bettendorf, Iowa, and as police there approached his car, he fatally shot himself, according to law enforcement.

An Alleged History of Domestic Violence

Bryant’s family said that Wendling had been abusing her for months before the murder. The ex-couple began dating a little less than a year ago, her sister Gintner told The Detroit News. Gintner added that Bryant lived with Wendling in Grand Blanc Township until late September. Gintner and Bryant’s mom moved her out of the apartment after she revealed to them that Wendling had been abusing her, the grieving sibling said.

“She was very beautiful, down-to-earth, giving woman,” Gintner told the local newspaper of her younger sister. “She could brighten up a day with just her smile. She’d give you the shirt off your back. She was caring and compassionate.”

Gabriella Kovalcik, who described Bryant as her “dearest friend whose presence is already deeply missed” in a Facebook post, added that “Gina Bryant was a one of a kind soul with a heart of gold.”

Bryant was studying at the University of Michigan-Flint, where she was enrolled in the school’s accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. “Gina was an extraordinary young woman with much ahead of her,” Cynthia McCurren, dean of the School of Nursing, wrote in an email sent to faculty and Bryant’s colleagues.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office encouraged anyone in an unsafe situation, or who knows someone who is, to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

“Unfortunately, the MCSO is seeing an uptick of domestic violence cases,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham stated. “These incidents are tragic not only to the victims & survivors, but to family members as well. Please, if you or someone you know is in an unsafe situation, do not hesitate to reach out.”
