Top 5 Chair Exercises to Reduce Belly Overhang for Seniors

0

For those seeking to flatten their belly overhang, especially as they age, a strength coach suggests five chair exercises that outperform traditional gym machines. These moves are particularly effective for individuals over 60, offering a practical approach to strengthening the core.

When you enter a typical gym, you’ll notice numerous machines dedicated to core workouts, each claiming to sculpt your midsection with dedication and time. However, many of these machines restrict you to rigid positions that don’t align with natural body movements. Once you hit 60, your core benefits more from exercises that integrate strength, control, and coordination rather than isolating specific areas. Surprisingly, a simple chair can significantly transform your workout regimen.

Chair-based exercises are designed to mimic real-life activities, engaging your core while keeping you upright. These moves encourage stabilization through the hips and teach you to manage your torso while in motion. From my experience coaching clients, this method often marks the moment when individuals start to feel their core functioning as it should. The goal is not merely about achieving a tighter midsection; it’s about developing strength that enhances posture, balance, and overall body connectivity.

If your aim is to diminish belly overhang and fortify your core, you might consider bypassing those intricate machines. Instead, embrace a set of movements that challenge your body in an effective yet manageable manner. The five chair exercises outlined below are designed to work your core from multiple perspectives, fostering control and building strength that translates to everyday activities. Let’s delve into these exercises.

If you’re looking to flatten your belly overhang and feel stronger through your core, you can, in fact, skip the complicated machine. The recipe is a dose of movements that challenge your body in a practical, effective way while keeping things approachable and consistent. The five chair exercises below target your core from multiple angles, reinforce control, and help you build strength that carries over into everyday life. Let’s get into it.

Seated Knee Tucks

Seated knee tucks directly target your lower core while keeping you supported and stable. Instead of lying on the floor, you stay upright, which forces your core to engage through a longer range of motion. This creates more tension through your midsection and helps improve control as you bring your knees in and out. You’ll also feel your hip flexors and deep core muscles working together, which enhances overall effectiveness. Over time, this movement helps tighten and strengthen the area that often contributes to belly overhang.

Muscles Trained: Lower abs, hip flexors, and deep core stabilizers

How to Do It:

  1. Sit tall on the edge of a chair with your hands gripping the sides.
  2. Lean back slightly while keeping your chest lifted.
  3. Extend your legs out in front of you.
  4. Pull your knees in toward your chest.
  5. Pause briefly at the top.
  6. Extend your legs back out with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations:
Single-leg knee tuck, alternating knee tuck, slow tempo knee tuck

Form Tip: Pull your chest towards your pant line to really engage your abs!

Seated March with Hold

This movement looks simple, but it builds serious core strength through stability and control. Lifting one leg at a time forces your core to stabilize your pelvis and prevent shifting. That constant demand keeps your midsection engaged throughout the entire set. It also improves coordination and balance while seated. Over time, this helps reinforce a tighter, more controlled core.

Muscles Trained: Core stabilizers, hip flexors, and lower abs

How to Do It:

  1. Sit tall with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place your hands lightly on your thighs or at your sides.
  3. Lift one knee up toward hip height.
  4. Hold the position briefly.
  5. Lower your foot back down with control.
  6. Alternate legs with each rep.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per leg. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Double hold march, band-resisted march, slow tempo march

Form Tip: Stay tall and stack with your torso as you march to avoid leaning back.

Seated Russian Twist

Rotational strength plays a big role in tightening your midsection, and this exercise targets it directly. Twisting from a seated position forces your obliques to engage while you maintain control through your torso. It also improves coordination and helps your core work as a unit. Adding resistance or slowing the tempo can increase the challenge. This is a great way to build a more defined and functional core.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, rectus abdominis, and core stabilizers

How to Do It:

  1. Sit on the edge of a chair with your feet slightly off the ground.
  2. Lean back slightly while keeping your chest lifted.
  3. Hold your hands together or hold a lightweight in front of you.
  4. Rotate your torso to one side.
  5. Rotate to the opposite side with control.
  6. Continue alternating sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 12 to 16 reps per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Feet-down twist, weighted twist, pause twist

Form Tip: Rotate through your torso, keeping your arms relaxed.

Seated Leg Extensions with Lean

This exercise combines core engagement with lower-body movement to create more tension through your midsection. Leaning back slightly increases the demand on your core, while extending your legs challenges control. You’ll feel your abs working to stabilize your body throughout the movement. It also improves coordination between your core and legs. This makes it a strong option for building functional strength.

Muscles Trained: Lower abs, quads, and hip flexors

How to Do It:

  1. Sit on the edge of a chair with your hands gripping the sides.
  2. Lean back slightly while keeping your chest lifted.
  3. Straighten both legs out in front of you.
  4. Hold briefly at full extension.
  5. Bend your knees to return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat with controlled movement.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Alternating leg extension, single-leg hold, slow tempo extension

Form Tip: Think of tucking your ribs down and avoiding swinging your legs.

Seated Cross-Body Crunch

This movement combines rotation and flexion, helping target multiple areas of your core at once. Reaching across your body increases the demand on your obliques while maintaining torso control. It also improves coordination and helps your core work more efficiently. You’ll feel your midsection engage with every rep. Over time, this contributes to a tighter and stronger core.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, rectus abdominis, and core stabilizers

How to Do It:

  1. Sit tall with your hands behind your head.
  2. Lift one knee toward your chest.
  3. Rotate your torso to bring the opposite elbow toward your knee.
  4. Return to the starting position.
  5. Alternate sides with each rep.
  6. Maintain control throughout the movement.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Slow tempo crunch, pause crunch, weighted crunch

Form Tip: Squeeze your abs tight with each rep, feeling the movement through your core.

The Best Tips for Flattening Belly Overhang After 60

Flattening belly overhang after 60 comes down to building core strength while staying consistent with movements that translate to real life. You don’t need to rely on machines that isolate one area and limit how your body moves. Instead, focus on exercises that challenge your core to stabilize, control, and support your body through motion. Chair-based training makes this process approachable while still delivering real results. Over time, this approach helps improve posture, tighten your midsection, and build confidence in how you move.

Here’s how to get the most out of your training:

  • Stay consistent: Short, focused sessions done regularly will drive better results than occasional long workouts.
  • Focus on control: Move slowly and avoid rushing through reps to increase core engagement.
  • Train through range: Use movements that bring your knees in, extend your legs, and rotate your torso.
  • Keep your posture strong: Sit tall and avoid collapsing through your upper body.
  • Progress gradually: Add reps, time under tension, or light resistance as you improve.
  • Pair with daily movement: Walking and light activity support overall fat loss and core strength.

Melissa Gorga Opens Up About Tensions with Teresa Giudice: Why She’s Still Cautious

Though Melissa Gorga of Real Housewives of New Jersey fame has reportedly patched things up with Teresa Giudice, her sister-in-law, she remains apprehensive about provoking Teresa’s ire, according to an insider source.

EXCLUSIVE: RHONJ Star Melissa Gorga Still ’Nervous’ to ‘Ruffle Feathers’ With Former Archnemesis Teresa Giudice

Credit: Instagram

Melissa recently joined her niece, Gia Giudice, on the Casual Chaos podcast, which aired last week. The source suggested that Melissa’s participation in the episode reflects her cautious approach to avoiding any conflict.

“Melissa is quite hesitant to ‘go there’ and say anything that might anger Teresa,” the insider noted. “She essentially admitted to this apprehension during the Casual Chaos podcast,” they added, highlighting Melissa’s own admission of feeling uneasy about the subjects discussed.

“I’m genuinely nervous because I imagine your mom listening,” Melissa confessed during the podcast. “When she hears this, she’s going to be like, ‘I don’t appreciate what you guys said.’ Gia, you’re stressing me out; you’re taking the blame for everything.”

“I’m like scared, because I feel like when your mom listens, because you know… I feel like when she listens to this, she’s like, ‘I don’t like that you guys said. I don’t like that.’  I’m like, Gia, you’re stressing me out. You’re taking the blame for all of this.”

Gia, for her part, insisted she went over the questions with Teresa before the podcast and that “she was fine.”

“Melissa doesn’t want to rock the boat and wants to keep things even-keeled and is nervous to say anything that may make Teresa mad,” the source divulged. “Things are finally good, and she’s seen how angry Teresa has gotten at her in the past and doesn’t want to go there again.”

Another driving force for keeping the peace is the show, the insider explained, as Bravo was not interested in repeating another season of the two of them at each other’s throats and not getting along.

“They know they have to keep things good for the sake of their livelihood, and Melissa certainly is not going to risk that by putting her foot in her mouth,” they added. “She’s being cautious. Given the past – and how long it took for the show to return after season 14 – it’s all with good reason.”

While on the podcast, the infamous Strippergate scandal from season four was discussed.

“Do you really feel that my mom was behind that, looking back on it now?” Gia asked Melissa. “Or do you feel that it was Kim D and other people that just put her in an awful situation?”

“Listen, I think it was very obvious that not your mom herself didn’t have this lightbulb come up in her head, but the group that she was with at the time, Kim D, whoever she somehow found, this guy that used to work at the strip club, right?” Melissa shared. “She gets herself into these situations where she doesn’t even realize how it’s going to look after, and when it gets said, I don’t think that she’s sitting there like, ‘Oh, today is the day that I’m bringing her down.’”

Melissa added it would “happen a lot in those seasons,” and she would tell Teresa it “didn’t look good” that she was with people who were saying things about her.

Terry Crews Unveils Wife’s Misdiagnosed Parkinson’s Journey: Overcoming Dismissals as ‘Anxiety

0

Rebecca King, the spouse of actor Terry Crews, has come forward to share her personal struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

King, who has been married to Crews since 1989, revealed her diagnosis on Monday’s episode of the Today Show. At 60, she disclosed that she has been living with this progressive and incurable neurological disorder for over a decade.

The disease is known for causing symptoms such as muscle rigidity, slowed movement, tremors, sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue, and a diminished quality of life, potentially escalating to severe disability.

Actor Michael J. Fox was notably diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 29 back in 1991, bringing significant public awareness to the condition.

Recently, King underwent a pioneering non-invasive treatment that employs sound waves targeted at the brain, aiming to alleviate her symptoms. She happily reports that this procedure has restored her ability to write and effectively halted the tremors in her right hand.

She said: ‘I feel good. I’m able to write my name and my dates, and I’m able to write with my right hand for the first time in probably three years.’

WHAT IS PARKINSON’S DISEASE?

Parkinson’s disease affects one in 500 people, and around 127,000 people in the UK live with the condition.

Figures also suggest one million Americans also suffer.

It causes muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, tremors, sleep disturbance, chronic fatigue, an impaired quality of life and can lead to severe disability.

It is a progressive neurological condition that destroys cells in the part of the brain that controls movement.

Sufferers are known to have diminished supplies of dopamine because nerve cells that make it have died.

There is currently no cure and no way of stopping the progression of the disease, but hundreds of scientific trials are underway to try and change that.

The disease claimed the life of boxing legend Muhammad Ali in 2016 and Ozzy Osbourne in 2025.

King revealed her first symptoms appeared around 2012, manifesting as numbness in her left foot, which became a limp.

Her doctor believed the limp was due to working out too much, but King said her personal trainer noticed her left arm wasn’t ‘swinging as much as her right’ during some exercises.

King, who shares five children with Crews, said she then noticed her hand shaking  when she applied lip gloss, which she instantly recognized as a tremor because ‘my grandmother had tremors.’

The musician claimed her doctor put her tremors down to anxiety – but after three years and the help of a Parkinson’s specialist – she was formally diagnosed.

King previously battled breast cancer in 2020 and underwent a double mastectomy.

She told People: ‘I’m doing 90 percent of what I want to do. Terry is my rock. And I thank God that he has the means to take care of me, allowing me to go to doctors and get the procedures I need.

‘God told me, “Keep living, Rebecca. Keep living like you’re healed,’”.

‘I couldn’t even print out my name or fill out a form [due to the tremors]. But I can now.’

Crews added: ‘My mission is to make sure she gets the best care possible,” he says. “Where she’s weak, I’m strong. There are days when there’s nothing I can do and I just have to hold her as she cries in my arms.’

Both Crews and King have been vocal about their marital struggles in recent years and, in 2021, the White Chicks star admitted that his porn addiction almost destroyed their relationship.

When asked about the secret to a long-lasting marriage, King previously said: ‘You have to make sure that you’re getting what you want and they’re getting what they want. One of the reasons I was able to stay in my marriage is because I knew what I wanted when I got married.

‘I knew that I wanted a certain life, and it turned out that he wanted what I wanted.

‘Sometimes people fall in love with people who don’t want what they want, they don’t want the same thing. One person wants kids, the other one doesn’t. That’s a recipe for disaster.

‘So I hate to say it’s like a job interview, but it really was for me, knowing that Terry’s goals were very close to mine was like a sign to me,’ she added.

‘It’s been hard, and my husband has talked openly about problems he’s had, but deep down, Terry was just a good guy and he was my friend.’

Rebecca King, the wife of actor Terry Crews, has bravely shared her personal struggle with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition. The announcement came during her appearance on the Today Show, marking 11 years since she was diagnosed with this challenging illness.

King, who is 60 years old, has been married to Crews since 1989. She explained that Parkinson’s affects various aspects of life, causing muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, tremors, sleep disturbances, and chronic fatigue, all of which can severely impact one’s quality of life and may lead to significant disability.

In a breakthrough moment for King, she has undergone a non-invasive procedure that utilizes sound waves targeted at the brain, which has significantly alleviated some of her symptoms. She expressed her delight in regaining the ability to write and noted that the tremors on her right side have ceased.

The story of King’s battle with Parkinson’s is reminiscent of actor Michael J. Fox, who was famously diagnosed with the same condition at the age of 29 in 1991. Her courage in sharing her journey adds to the ongoing conversation about Parkinson’s and highlights the potential of new treatments to improve the lives of those affected by this incurable disorder.

Rachel Dratch Reveals New ‘Warrantina’ Role with American Home Shield, Embraces ‘Woo Woo’ Spirit, and Shares Fun Moments with Amy Poehler

Renowned for her roles on Saturday Night Live and her Tony Award-nominated performances, Rachel Dratch returns to the spotlight as the enigmatic appliance expert Warrantina, marking the third year of her collaboration with American Home Shield in their “Don’t Worry. Be Warranty.” campaign. The latest advertisements feature Dratch reprising her role, educating homeowners on the benefits of American Home Shield’s offerings, particularly emphasizing the company’s commitment to protecting appliances, regardless of age. In a conversation with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, Dratch delved into the origins of Warrantina, her explorations into the mystical on her podcast, and her enduring friendship with fellow comedian Amy Poehler.

Rachel Dratch is back as Warrantina for the 3rd year of American Home Shield’s ‘Don’t Worry. Be Warranty.’ campaign

Rachel Dratch, celebrated for her seven-year tenure on Saturday Night Live where she brought to life the iconic “Debbie Downer,” returns as Warrantina in American Home Shield’s campaign. Warrantina is a whimsical, mystical character who guides homeowners through the advantages of home warranty plans, clearly illustrating how these plans function and the protection they offer.

In her discussion with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, Dratch recounted the creation of Warrantina. “Three years ago, they approached me with the idea of crafting something humorous and comedy-centric,” she explained about her involvement with American Home Shield. “I eagerly embraced the opportunity and, together with their advertising team, we developed this character.”

Dratch praised the comedic talent of the American Home Shield writers, noting that their wit made it an easy decision for her to participate. “I dislike the term, but it was essentially a ‘no-brainer’ to agree to this,” she added.

The actress also contributed to shaping Warrantina’s distinctive appearance, featuring a blue Bohemian-style robe and bold jewelry. She shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet that the aim was to create something “fun and bright and positive” yet “a little offbeat,” capturing the character’s unique charm.

“If you saw her in the supermarket, you might be like, OK, what’s her deal?” Dratch continued.

Ultimately, Warrantina wants homeowners to feel “zen” and have “inner peace” about their home appliances. “I think we all have things break down at horrible moments,” she said. “Like, you’re having a dinner party, and your oven’s not working. That’s why American Home Shield is so helpful. They even have a video chat feature. … I wish I had the video chat when my oven broke.”

The Tony-nominated comedienne is the narrator in a Broadway revival of ‘The Rocky Horror Show’

Rachel Dratch is currently starring as the narrator in a Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show. She told Showbiz Cheat Sheet that she was immediately on board when she was approached about taking on the role.

Rocky Horror is just fun,” she told us, noting that it’s a blast whether viewers are seeing it for the first time or are lovers of the story. “It’s just kind of part of our culture. I just know it’s a lot of fun, and going back to Broadyway, of course, I wanted to jump at the chance.” Dratch also called Sam Pinkleton a “great director” while praising the cast.

Dratch noted that she and the other cast members are navigating the audience yelling at them as they might during the film.

“We’ve had our fifth performance. We’re kind of navigating — some shows, people are yelling out everything like they would at the screen,” she explained. “That got a little outrageous, so we’re trying to dial it back a little. So, I think we’re finding that medium of, how much are they gonna yell things or not? It’s a learning curve.”

Rachel Dratch discussed her interest in the ‘woo woo’ world with her podcast

Rachel Dratch started her podcast, Woo Woo with Rachel Dratch, in October 2023. The podcast delves into the unexplained phenomena and otherworldly stories. And she frequently brings on well-known guests who can discuss their own experiences.

“I’m not even super woo woo, but I just always love a story,” she said. “… Then I had this idea to do this podcast with my friend, Irene [Bremis]. So, it’s sort of a comedy spin. But sometimes, we get serious about some topics. It’s a big umbrella — anything from sort of the more self-helpy kind of vibes, to ghost stories, to haunted houses, to crystals — whatever it might be. Everyone seems to have a story on some topic on Woo Woo.

Dratch noted that Woo Woo and Warrantina came about simultaneously. “They both kind of happened at the same time, which is woo woo in itself,” she said. “But, I guess I have an inner woo woo Rachel that likes talking about this stuff.

Fans went wild when she appeared on ‘Good Hang with Amy Poehler’ in October 2025

Saturday Night Live fans loved seeing Rachel Dratch and Amy Poehler together in October 2025 on Good Hang with Amy Poehler. The two comedy alums reminisced about their early days in the industry.

“We hang out in real life,” Dratch told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I know we laughed a lot on that episode. We do giggle a lot. But we also have our real moments too. We’re not just like, let’s do comedy bits! For that, we had a lot of laughs reminiscing about SNL days and all that.”

Dratch commented on why her real-life friendship with Poehler still resonates after all these years.

“Everyone grew up with us in whatever era you were in. It’s sort of like we were all in your home at some point,” Dratch explained. “People have this feeling of accessibility with SNL, because it’s just part of your growing up. People respond really positively on the streets. And I guess they’re just psyched to know that we’re friends in real life, too.”

She also called working on SNL a “pressure cooker” that brought the cast close. “It’s very bonding to be with everyone,” Dratch said. “Only we know what it was like to be writing a script at Tuesday at 4 in the morning. It’s kind of a bonding comedy experience.”

Rita Ora Arrives in Sydney, Effortlessly Stylish with a $28,000 Hermès Birkin in Tow

Rita Ora has touched down in Australia, ready to make a splash at two major events on the local scene. The British pop sensation arrived at Sydney Airport on Sunday, exuding an upbeat and lively demeanor.

At 35, Rita showcased a casually stylish look that turned heads. She wore a fitted grey tank top beneath a striped, open ‘boyfriend shirt’—a garment that could very well belong to her husband, the acclaimed New Zealand director Taika Waititi.

Embracing comfort, Rita paired her ensemble with black track pants and classic white Nike sneakers. To cap off her look, the singer donned designer sunglasses, while a black and white bandana held back her signature blonde locks.

Rita kept things comfortable, adding a pair of black track pants and white Nike sneakers.

The pop star shielded her famous face with designer sunglasses and pinned her blonde hair back under a black and white bandana.

She added to the look with a number of pieces of gold jewellery, while wearing minimal makeup.

The finishing touch for the hitmaker was an AUD $28,000 Hermès Birkin bag in black leather.

Rita is set to present an award at the Vogue Forces of Fashion event in Sydney this month, as well as performing at the Formula 1 Grand Prix 2026 in Melbourne in March.

It comes after Ora revealed it was a ‘real eye opener’ becoming a stepmother to her husband Waititi’s children.

Rita and director and actor Taika tied the knot in 2022 and Rita became a stepmother to his daughters Te Kāinga o te Hinekāhu, 13, and Matewa Kiritapu, nine.

In a rare comment on her family life, Rita opened up about how being a stepmother changed her perspective on the world.

Speaking to The Sun, Rita said she finds the role ‘easy’, but confessed it helped her understand how much more there is to life.

She said: ‘It’s really easy. We wake up, we work out together with the kids running on the treadmills, it’s a family affair.

‘I have to say it’s been a real eye-opener to understand that sometimes there’s more to life than what you care about in that moment.

‘I’ve realised there’s so much more, so [becoming a stepmother] did give me that.’

Film director Taika, 50, shares his two children with his ex-wife Chelsea Winstanley, also 50, who he split from in 2018 after seven years of marriage.

Last year Rita shared rare insight into her marriage to Taika while flaunting her jaw-dropping figure in a stunning shoot for Hunger magazine.

Rita credited their strong friendship as the key component to their romantic relationship.

Telling the publication: ‘Taika and I are basically just best friends and we wanted to just live in that element forever, I guess.’

The couple wed in a secret ceremony in August 2022, after Rita bucked tradition and popped the question.

Their low-key Los Angeles ceremony wasn’t confirmed by the couple until a year later, which Rita told Grazia they ‘winged with zero planning’.

After years of not being in the right relationship during her ‘messy twenties’, Rita said that when she got together with Taika it felt ‘right and safe’.

The pair started dating in March 2021, before going public with their romance that August.

Prior to their romantic relationship, Rita and Taika were close friends for five years.

Urgent Alert: Severe Tropical Cyclone Threatens Northern Australia with Potential Devastation

0
Residents in storm-lashed Far North Queensland could be facing another tropical cyclone in a few days, a potential second giant storm within just a few weeks.

The Bureau of Meteorology has announced that it is closely monitoring Tropical Cyclone Maila, a formidable Category 3 storm. This cyclone is currently packing sustained winds of 120 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 165 km/h.

Just last month, Tropical Cyclone Narelle wreaked havoc across Australia, impacting regions such as north Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia as both a cyclone and an ex-cyclone.

The Bureau reports that Tropical Cyclone Maila is presently stationary in the Solomon Sea. However, projections suggest that it could shift towards the Far North Queensland coast later this week, with a potential landfall over the weekend.

Communities still recovering from the destructive winds and floods caused by Tropical Cyclone Narelle may once again find themselves in the path of severe weather if Cyclone Maila continues its anticipated southwestern trajectory.

This year’s cyclone season, which runs until the end of this month, has already been a busy one, Weatherzone reports.

This marks the 11th named tropical cyclone to either develop within or move into the Australian region during this cyclone season.

The cyclone should reach severe intensity (Category 3) by late next Sunday or early Monday, modelling suggests.

“Should it cross the Cape York Peninsula, the system could weaken over land and then reintensify in the Gulf of Carpentaria, before impacting the eastern Top End early next week as it moves west,” Weatherzone said.

It’s too early to forecast whether Tropical Cyclone Maila will also impact Western Australia, forecasters say.

But they’re reminding Top End communities to be mindful that a weakened or redeveloped system could bring heavy downpours and to check for updates.

South Korea Unveils ‘Credible Intelligence’ on Kim Jong Un’s Successor in North Korea

0

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) believes that Kim Jong Un has earmarked his daughter as his eventual successor, lawmakers disclosed on Monday. This revelation was reported by Reuters, following insights shared after a confidential parliamentary session.

The NIS based its conclusions on what it described as “credible intelligence.” According to Reuters, both ruling and opposition party members received briefings that led to this understanding, highlighting the agency’s confidence in its sources.

Video footage posted last month showed Kim and his daughter on a tank.

North Korea tank

In a photo released by the North Korean government, Kim Jong Un is seen with his daughter, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae, during a military training exercise. The image, dated March 19, 2026, shows them alongside soldiers on a tank, signaling a potential focus on her military capabilities.

South Korean officials noted that this display, particularly the image of the girl operating a tank, was likely intended to underline her military aptitude. This move addresses and possibly counters skepticism about a female successor, as interpreted by lawmakers.

The North Korean state media agency, KCNA, recently published images of Kim Jong Un and his daughter with military equipment, including a tank. These followed earlier visuals of the young girl handling firearms, further fueling speculations about her future role, as reported by Reuters.

The daughter is thought to be about 13 years old and named Ju Ae.

The outlet reported that ruling Democratic Party lawmaker Park Sun-won indicated that the scenes are meant to pay “homage” to the North Korean leader’s military appearances years ago when he was being set up to succeed his father as regime leader.

Korea Institute for National Unification analyst Hong Min said the tank scene is not enough to determine that she has been established as her father’s successor, pointing out that she appeared with her father rather than independently, unlike her father’s independent military appearances as he was being groomed to take the helm.

South Korea to send ships to Red Sea port to avoid Strait of Hormuz

South Korea is gearing up to deploy five ships to the port of Yanbu on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast as it seeks to establish new oil supply routes, according to a member of the ruling party. This move comes in response to growing concerns over the potential disruption of the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent surge in oil prices, fueled by ongoing conflicts, poses significant risks to South Korea’s economic growth and inflation. The nation depends heavily on Middle Eastern oil, which accounts for about 70% of its crude imports.

In light of these challenges, the South Korean government is considering emergency measures such as implementing a fuel price cap, a measure not taken since the financial crisis of 1997.

The decision to explore alternative oil routes follows Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a move in retaliation against military actions by the United States and Israel.

“It is imperative that Korean-flagged vessels navigate alternative routes to ensure a stable supply of crude oil,” stated lawmaker Ahn Do-geol. This statement came after a critical meeting with key government agencies, including the energy ministry, to discuss the country’s energy security strategy.

‘We are pushing to deploy five South Korean-flagged vessels to Yanbu port in Saudi Arabia, in the Red Sea region,’ he said, without giving details.
