A Democrat who supported Donald Trump's nominee for DHS Secretary has explained why he split with the majority of his party to vote in Markwayne Mullin. John Fetterman, who often breaks with the party line, was one of only two Democrats who helped usher in the new Department of Homeland Security boss. The Pennsylvania lawmaker told Fox News' Saturday in America he voted for the MAGA Republican in an attempt to 'put country over party'. 'What's interesting is there were plenty of Democrats that criticized me for voting, for, to work with, Secretary Mullin,' he said.

In a surprising move that has sparked conversation and controversy, Democrat John Fetterman diverged from the majority of his party by supporting Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security. Markwayne Mullin, a MAGA Republican, received bipartisan backing thanks to Fetterman and one other Democrat. Fetterman, known for his independent streak, explained his decision during an appearance on Fox News’ “Saturday in America,” stating that he prioritized “country over party.” He remarked, “Many Democrats criticized me for my vote, but I haven’t seen similar outrage when there are calls for the deaths of American service members in downtown Philadelphia. I stand for reason and against government shutdowns. My allegiance is to the country, not party lines, and I will remain steadfast in that position.”

The backdrop to Fetterman’s comments includes a shocking incident in Philadelphia, where anti-American protesters gathered, openly celebrating the notion of harm befalling US soldiers. A chilling video from the demonstration revealed a masked speaker declaring, “For every US military base that crumbles and for every US soldier who returns home in a casket, we cheer.” This display of extremism drew a sharp rebuke from Fetterman, who took to social media platform X to decry the rally as “truly appalling.”

An Unlikely Alliance

The anti-America rally was condemned on Thursday by Fetterman, who called the remarks 'Truly appalling,' on X. Fetterman also wrote on X at the time, 'These [expletive] chanting [sic] for the death of our servicemembers.' 'Where's the Dem outrage and condemnation?' he asked. Across the aisle, Texas Senator Ted Cruz quickly responded to Fetterman. 'Very good Q,' Cruz posted, also calling the demonstration 'sick' in a separate post.

Fetterman expressed his disgust in a post, stating, “These [expletive] chanting for the death of our servicemembers.” He also questioned the lack of outrage from his fellow Democrats, asking, “Where’s the Dem outrage and condemnation?” His query was met with a swift response from across the political aisle, as Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz echoed the sentiment, labeling the protest as “sick” and acknowledging Fetterman’s question with a “Very good Q.”

Every parent believes their child is unique, but for Maddicyn Brokenshire, her son is genuinely exceptional.

Living in Timaru, New Zealand, Maddicyn Brokenshire, 38, and her husband Daniel, 30, were thrilled when they learned they were going to be parents for the first time.

However, their excitement quickly turned to concern when doctors alerted them to potential complications with the pregnancy.

During a hospital visit, Maddicyn was informed by doctors that she had a subchorionic hemorrhage. This condition, involving bleeding between the uterine wall and the gestational sac, affects about one percent of pregnancies and typically resolves without intervention.

The usual symptoms include vaginal bleeding and mild cramping, and scientific studies have yet to definitively determine whether it leads to further pregnancy complications.

‘When we first found out, it was incredibly overwhelming,’ she told the Daily Mail, adding that they worried it may affect the fetus. ‘There was a lot of uncertainty and the initial prognosis wasn’t very clear.’ 

The mom said she and her husband didn’t know what to expect, which made the situation even scarier. All they could do was try to focus on taking things ‘one step at a time.’

But the prognosis worsened at Brokenshire’s 20-week scan.

Doctors identified that little Ollyver was battling amniotic bands – fibrous strands of tissue detached from the inner amniotic sac. The bands can remain free-floating, but they can also wrap around developing limbs, digits or other body parts and restrict growth. The latter is known as Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS).

Brokenshire’s doctors initially believed the bands were ‘floating’ and may not cause any issues.

But the mother-to-be, who formerly worked as a nurse, said her instincts told her otherwise.

She began extensive research on ABS and had a haunting feeling that her baby would suffer complications. ABS is a rare condition that affects just one in 15,000 births and occurs when the inner layer of the placenta is damaged during pregnancy.

At 33 weeks pregnant, Brokenshire was rushed back to a hospital in Christchurch that she called larger and better-equipped than the first one she visited.

‘That’s where they discovered that he was suffering,’ she recalled. ‘The amniotic bands were attached. He had an indentation on his nose bridge and his right eye orbit was smaller than the other. They didn’t know how severe it was going to be.’

When Brokenshire’s water broke just one week later, she and her husband were told the bands were still attached to baby Ollyver.

He was born via cesarean section at Christchurch Hospital, but wasn’t breathing as doctors tried to resuscitate him. Thankfully, he recovered.

But the newborn was plagued with health concerns as the ABS had been severe, causing ‘deformities and loss of function,’ Brokenshire told the Daily Mail.

He had a massive open wound on the back of his head as a result of Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC), where some areas of skin could not fully form before birth. 

‘It can happen anywhere on the body but in Ollyver’s case, it is on his scalp where his hair grows,’ she explained. 

Ollyver’s eyelids also did not develop. Brokenshire told the Daily Mail he is ‘fully blind’ in his right eye and will eventually need a prosthetic.

Now, at eight months old, the infant has undergone several surgeries to release the amniotic bands and surgically create eyelids.

‘Surgeons attempted to correct his ability to close his eyes by pinning and suturing the eyelid higher,’ Brokenshire said. ‘But it wasn’t successful, so they will continue to adjust this over time.’

His doting mom happily reported her little boy is crawling and ‘on the move constantly.’

‘Neurologically, Ollyver has been incredibly lucky,’ Brokenshire said. 

‘His brain was not affected. He is meeting all of his milestones and is even ahead in some areas.’

Although Ollyver may have challenges with balance and depth perception, the family has already enlisted support services to help him.

His mother is proud of all he has accomplished so far, and called Ollyver ‘such a strong, resilient little boy.’

Downtown Iowa Shooting: Multiple University Students Injured After Campus-Area Altercation

Early Sunday morning, a shooting erupted at the lively Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City, situated near the University of Iowa. The incident left several individuals, including students, injured, as law enforcement officers rushed to secure the scene while the suspect remains unidentified and at large.

The Iowa City Public Safety Department reported that officers responded to a disturbance call around 1:46 a.m. on the 100 block of East College Street, a popular nightlife destination close to the university. As the police arrived, they were met with the sound of gunfire.

Following the incident, numerous victims were transported to local hospitals to receive treatment for injuries sustained during the shooting, according to police reports.

Authorities have identified five individuals injured in the shooting. Among them, one is in critical condition, while the remaining four are reported to be in stable condition.

The Iowa City Police Department released images of five persons of interest seen walking in connection with the shooting, as part of their ongoing investigation.

Students at the University of Iowa were among the wounded, the school said in a statement.

“While the investigation is in its early stages, there are no indications any university students were the intended victims,” it added.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Police later released photos of five persons of interest in connection with the shooting.

A Georgia man, aged 37, faces decades behind bars following his conviction for the fatal shooting of his wife’s former fiancé during an intended supervised child visitation. This tragic event has culminated in a significant sentence, shedding light on a deeply unsettling scenario.

Nicholas Michael Mimms has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 31-year-old Eduardo “Eddie” Gilberto Figueroa. This decision follows Mimms’ conviction in February on counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearms possession. However, the jury did acquit him of malice murder, as outlined by the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office.

The case reveals that Mimms’ wife shared a child with Figueroa, who had recently secured parental rights. On the day of the incident, Mimms was meant to oversee Figueroa’s inaugural court-sanctioned visitation with his child. The circumstances surrounding this encounter were starkly contrasting.

Figueroa arrived with the intent to connect, bringing a stuffed toy, diapers, and snacks for his child. In a chilling contrast, Mimms was prepared with body armor and a firearm. Assistant District Attorney Megan S. Hertel, who led the prosecution, highlighted this disparity in a poignant statement.

“These were two men with very different plans about how this day should go,” Hertel remarked. “Eduardo Figueroa arrived with love, excitement, and gifts for the son he was going to meet for the very first time. The defendant brought a bulletproof vest and a loaded gun. This was a tragedy, and it should never have happened.”

Figueroa’s family members spoke about the excitement he had for meeting his son for the first time.

“The heartbreak this family has endured is unimaginable. On a day that should have been filled with smiles and laughter, a young father was senselessly gunned down,” said District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway. “This sentence ensures the defendant is held accountable for taking a father from his child and forever altering the lives of those left behind.”

As Law&Crime previously reported, cops responded around noon on Aug. 7, 2021, to the home on Mohawk Trail in the Acworth area of Cherokee County. When they arrived, they found Figueroa dead outside the home on a deck with multiple gunshot wounds.

Mimms claimed self-defense, saying Figueroa was “dangerous” and had “threatened him,” prosecutors say. But Figueroa did not have a gun and posed no threat to Mimms, prosecutors said. The convicted murderer was “waiting outside of the home for Figueroa to arrive,” per prosecutors.

The child and mother were not present. Once Figueroa saw the child was not there, he began to walk away, but the defendant “called him back to talk.” That’s when Mimms shot Figueroa four times in the side, back and arm.

Jurors convicted Mimms after about eight hours of deliberation following the three-week trial.

According to his obituary, Figueroa was a U.S. Army veteran and was attending Kennesaw State University, where he was a student in the Computer Science and Engineering Department with hopes of becoming a video game developer.

“I felt fortunate to be the mother of such a kind, beautiful human being and amazing father,” his mother wrote. “His laughter was contagious, and he was funny, smart, and a great friend. I will miss everything about him — our calls, the I love you’s, and everything in between.”

A Chinese student enrolled at a Scottish university finds himself in legal trouble after capturing images of aircraft at a US military installation.

Tianrui Liang, an aeronautical engineering student at the University of Glasgow, faces charges for taking unauthorized photographs at Offutt Air Force Base. This base is notably the hub for the US Strategic Command.

The 21-year-old was detained at New York’s JFK Airport on April 7, following reports of him photographing a plane renowned for its resilience to nuclear attacks.

Authorities were tipped off by an observer at the Nebraska base, who noticed Liang in a vehicle using a camera with a long-range lens as a military aircraft was positioned on the runway.

FBI documents allege that on March 31, Liang photographed several aircraft at Offutt, including the Boeing E-4B, commonly referred to as the ‘doomsday plane.’

The aircraft can act as a mobile command post for senior American military and government officials during national emergencies.

Liang appeared before a court in New York on April 8 and was initially released on bail, but was taken back into custody the following day when the government warned he was a ‘considerable flight risk’.

Noah Heflin, a special agent with the FBI, wrote that Liang told counterintelligence teams he knew his actions were illegal, but that the photos were ‘only for his own personal collection’.

The student is a keen plane spotter and has previously travelled around the UK to photograph military and commercial aircraft.

Mr Heflin’s affidavit alleges that Liang used a plane spotting website to learn where planes are parked, serviced, and loaded at numerous airfields and airports, including the Offutt base.

According to legal documents, Liang flew out to Canada on March 26 to meet a friend who is studying at Columbia University in New York.

The pair drove across the border into America two days later, travelling from Seattle, Washington, to Billings, Montana.

When the friend departed for New York on March 29, Liang drove to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota in a bid to photograph the B1-B aircraft, a strategic bomber.

He discovered that the plane had been moved and therefore could not be photographed, then headed on to Offutt Air Force Base.

Liang was arrested several days later while travelling back to Scotland and charged with violating a US law that bans photographing, sketching or mapping ‘vital’ military bases and equipment without permission.

The student is expected to appear in court again later this month. However, the full details of his case remain undisclosed due to the FBI’s ‘concerns regarding the ongoing investigation into a named co-conspirator’.

Liang’s arrest comes amid longstanding warnings that British universities have become ‘magnets’ for espionage, according to the head of MI5 and University of Glasgow alumnus Ken McCallum.

Programs funded by the Chinese Communist party on British campuses have been accused of spying on, and censoring UK students in recent years.

Experts also warn that universities running cutting-edge research projects with international students risk exposing sensitive military and technological material to foreign agents.

In November, Nigel Inkster of the International Institute for Strategic Studies told the BBC there are ‘a lot of cases of joint research which have clear military-defence applications, where I would have thought it would occur to those engaged to ask questions about the desirability of continuing with such activities.’

Liang’s lawyer, Jeffrey Thomas, from the Federal Public Defender’s Omaha office, did not respond to enquiries.

The US Attorney’s Office in Nebraska said it was unable to comment at this time.

A University of Glasgow spokesperson said: ‘We do not comment on ongoing police matters or individual students.’

Alachua Resident Faces Arrest for Drugs and Firearms Violations

Authorities in Alachua, Florida, have apprehended 22-year-old Davon Lee Curtis on charges related to the production and distribution of crack cocaine, alongside the possession of a firearm during a felony. The arrest took place in the early hours of the morning, casting a spotlight on the ongoing efforts to curb drug-related activities in the area.

The incident unfolded late on April 17, around 11:53 p.m., during a routine patrol by an officer from the Alachua Police Department. The officer was monitoring the vicinity of NW 133rd Terrace and NW 151st Lane, noting an uptick in criminal incidents reported in the neighborhood over the past month.

During the patrol, the officer observed an SUV traveling north on NW 133rd Terrace. A quick check revealed a seize tag order for the vehicle, along with records indicating the registered owner’s driver’s license was suspended. This prompted the officer to initiate a traffic stop.

Upon questioning, Curtis acknowledged that his license was indeed suspended and claimed he was in the process of addressing the issue. The officer also noticed a bag of marijuana clearly visible and detected the scent of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Additionally, the officer observed the outline of a firearm tucked in Curtis’s waistband, which Curtis confirmed was a gun.

The officer conducted a traffic stop, and Curtis reportedly said he was aware that his license was suspended, and he was trying to get that corrected. The officer reported seeing a bag of marijuana in plain view and noted that he could smell burnt marijuana coming from within the vehicle; he also reported seeing the outline of a firearm in Curtis’s waistband, and Curtis reportedly confirmed that he had a gun in his waistband.

The officer removed the gun after Curtis got out of the vehicle, and a probable cause search of the vehicle reportedly produced about 13 grams of marijuana, about a gram of crack cocaine, and three small baggies of cocaine, along with empty baggies, a scale, baking powder, metal cups wrapped in tin foil, and a metal fork wrapped in tin foil.

The officer noted that the baking powder, metal cups, and metal fork can be used to manufacture crack cocaine by heating cocaine and adding a cutting agent, such as baking powder.

Post Miranda, Curtis reportedly admitted to selling crack cocaine because he was being sued and his wages were being garnished.

Curtis has been charged with possession of cocaine with intent to manufacture and/or sell, maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of selling drugs, possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony, driving with a suspended license, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Curtis has no local adult criminal history, and Judge Denise Ferrero set bail at $31,000.

Gintama‘s second ending theme, “Mr. Raindrop,” by the short-lived rock band Amplified, is the kind of song that once you hear, you can’t stop hearing it. Paired with one of Gintama‘s most bizarre alien enigmas, Elizabeth, she skips through the credits in the rain with a red umbrella and an unnerving blank expression. As a hilarious aside, across over two dozen ending songs, two feature Elizabeth’s wacky adventures, and both songs are absolute masterpieces.

“Mr. Raindrop’s” playful repetition is enough to lodge the song firmly in the listener’s ear. Considering it was Amplified’s debut single back in 2006, they definitely had a knack for catchy tunes. Sadly, as of 2007, the band is no longer together.

There is no denying it. Jujutsu Kaisen‘s anime outdoes itself in every story arc with openers and closers. Fans walk around singing them, even if they have no idea what all the lyrics actually are, because they don’t speak Japanese. “Kaikai Kitan” by Eve was the very first JJK opening theme, introducing fans to Yuji Itadori and the devastating world that was about to drag him into its darkness.

The way Jujutsu Kaisen utilizes both its opening and closing credits to connect fans to very specific story arcs is brilliant. Fans were already excited for Dandadan to get an anime adaptation, so when the first episode dropped and that catchy opener hit, it was an instant earworm. Creepy Nuts’ “Otonoke” was so popular, it spent weeks dominating Oricon’s charts. Fans couldn’t get enough of the deliberately tribal beat of “Otonoke,” which backed up the supernatural elements that dominate Dandadan‘s overall theme with lyrics featuring ghosts and demons.

Much like Jujutsu Kaisen‘s “Kaikai Kitan,” the way “Otonoke” came to define the moment fans first set eyes on Science SARU’s adaptation of a beloved manga. Studio Pierrot wasted no time between the original Naruto anime’s ending and the premier of Naruto Shippuden. Fans didn’t even have time to miss Naruto and the ninjas of the Hidden Leaf, because Shippuden launched just one week after the end of the original anime.

The importance of “Hero’s Comeback!!” lies in the two-year timeskip between the two anime, where Naruto was away from the village and training with Jiraiya. There’s a nostalgic feeling, even now when the drums start, like the viewer is coming back home along with Naruto. As silly as it might sound, nobodyknows+ perfectly captures the heroic vibe with the song, which, once heard, will probably groove without a cover charge inside the head for days on end.

In the early hours of Sunday, a violent incident unfolded near the University of Iowa campus, leaving five individuals injured in a mass shooting following a significant altercation. The Iowa City police have confirmed the incident and are actively seeking public assistance in identifying five “persons of interest” related to the event.

Currently, one of the victims remains in critical condition, while the other four have been stabilized, as reported by the Iowa City Public Safety in a statement shared on Facebook Sunday afternoon.

The authorities have released an image depicting five young men who they believe may have crucial information regarding the incident. They are urging anyone who can identify these individuals to reach out to Detective Cade Burma via email at cburma@iowa-city.org or by calling 319-356-5275.

The chaotic scene unfolded at approximately 1:45 a.m. at the Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City, where a fight involving nearly 100 people erupted. Amidst the turmoil, gunfire was heard, marking a tragic end to the brawl.

Police were responding to a fight at the Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City around 1:45 a.m. involving as many as 100 people when gunshots rang out.

Dramatic video of the melee shared on social media showed dozens of people crowded around a group of men throwing haymakers at each other.

The brawl took place in a popular bar area that is just one block from some parts of the Big Ten campus.

Authorities are in the process of piecing together the tragic events of a mass shooting that unfolded in Louisiana, spanning across multiple locations.

In a heart-wrenching incident in Shreveport, Louisiana, eight young lives, ranging from just a year old to 14, were tragically cut short. The children were among ten victims struck by gunfire during what police have described as a “domestic disturbance” on Sunday morning. However, the specifics surrounding the incident remain under investigation as the situation continues to develop.

During a brief press conference held around midday on Sunday, Christopher Bordelon, a spokesperson for the Shreveport police, provided early insights into the ongoing investigation. He emphasized the complexity of the case, noting that it involved a “very large scene” that stretched across four different locations.

As investigators work diligently to uncover the full story behind this devastating event, the community and beyond are left grappling with the immense loss and seeking answers to how such a tragedy could occur.

Police responded around 6 a.m. local time to a call about a domestic disturbance in a residential neighborhood but found a crime scene at two homes on the same street and a third on a street nearby. 

Shreveport police said the suspected gunman carjacked a vehicle near the crime scenes and led law enforcement on a pursuit that ended in nearby Bossier City, which police identify as the fourth scene. 

Shreveport police said officers shot and killed the man, who they believe is the only gunman.  

Police said the man’s children were believed to be among the dead. 

“It’s a terrible morning in Shreveport,” Mayor Tom Arceneaux said during the press conference. 

“We have a hurting community. We have hurting families. And we have hurting police officers, coroners’ personnel, fire department, sheriffs’ people—this affects the entire community. We all mourn with these families,” he said. 

When police confirmed the details about the children during the press conference, attendees were heard crying out and gasping after learning about the tragic developments. 

“I just don’t know what to say,” Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said. “My heart is just taken aback. I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur.” 

Police expect to release the name of the suspected gunman and more information about the investigation in the coming days.
