Catch the Spectacular Lyrid Meteor Shower: Peak Viewing Tips and Timing Revealed

0

This year’s Lyrid meteor shower promises to be a spectacular sight, thanks largely to the absence of light from a dim crescent moon. As the shower reaches its peak from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, skywatchers can look forward to witnessing between 10 and 20 meteors per hour, according to NASA.

While the celestial display will be visible worldwide, the Northern Hemisphere offers the best vantage points. Fortunately, the crescent moon will set early, ensuring it won’t interfere with the meteor shower’s brilliance.

Meteor showers occur when Earth encounters debris trails left behind by celestial objects. As these tiny fragments enter our atmosphere, they burn up, creating the streaks of light we often call shooting stars.

Interestingly, despite their name, most meteor showers originate from comet debris. The Lyrid meteor shower, in particular, comes from the remnants of comet Thatcher, an icy body that only graces our skies once every 415 years.

Maria Valdes, a meteorite researcher at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, explains, “We only get to see the actual comet once every 415 years. But we pass through the grains that have been left in its wake every year around the same time.”

A handful of random meteors are visible on any given night. At predictable times throughout the year, enough can be seen at once to make a more exciting spectacle. The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, with reported sightings dating back over 2,500 years.

To see the Lyrids, go outside after midnight and venture away from tall buildings and city lights. It’ll take at least 15 to 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the nighttime sky and remember to resist looking at your phone.

Bring lawn chairs or a sleeping bag and be patient until the meteors reveal themselves. They’ll appear to come from the constellation Lyra in the northeastern sky.

“A meteor looks like a trail of light in the sky. What you tend to detect is the motion against the background,” said astronomer Lisa Will with San Diego City College.

The next major shower is soon approaching in early May: the Eta Aquarids, debris from Halley’s Comet.

Tragic Car Seat Incident Involving Young Girl May Prompt Industry Overhaul

0

A tragic accident involving a two-year-old girl unfolded in Ohio, where she was crushed in the back seat of her family’s new Hyundai SUV. Heart-wrenching bodycam footage captured the desperate attempts to save her, as onlookers watched in shock and her father stood in disbelief.

The incident occurred on the morning of March 7 in Akron, when Lucia Ayala was pinned by a power seat in a 2026 Hyundai Palisade, according to information from the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office shared with the Daily Mail.

The medical examiner determined that Lucia’s untimely death was accidental, citing mechanical asphyxia as the cause.

Further details revealed that it seemed a button had been inadvertently activated, causing one of the rear seats in the SUV to move forward and tragically trap Lucia.

Bodycam video acquired by the Daily Mail showed an officer from the Akron Police Department hurriedly arriving at the scene in the Restaurant Depot parking lot on Sweitzer Avenue.

Lucia could be seen laying on the ground unconscious in a white shirt and pink pants as a woman and officer performed CPR.  The Daily Mail has blurred the footage because of its upsetting nature.

The youngster’s shellshocked father, identified as Arnoldo Ayala in a public obituary, was later seen in bodycam footage speaking with an officer and trying to desperately work out how the car seat could have possibly trapped Lucia.

Last month’s tragedy prompted Hyundai to issue a recall of the make and model involved, as a full investigation continues into Lucia’s death.

The bodycam footage showed Lucia’s dad telling police that his SUV’s seats were ‘not working.’

‘Right now, I’m trying to put it up,’ he said. ‘It’s not working. I don’t know because we pulled it up so hard or something.’

A child safety seat was laid out to the side of the SUV as the conversation happened.

Investigators have yet to release full details of what happened to Lucia, but the medical examiner told the Daily Mail that her death was described as a ‘child compressed by power folding seat in a parked SUV.’

A complete review of Lucia’s death is expected to take up to 12 weeks.

Lt. Michael Murphy confirmed to the Daily Mail on Friday morning that Lucia’s death had been deemed accidental.

He was unable to comment on whether an issue with one of the car’s buttons used to activate the seat might have been to blame.

‘It’s one of those things where it’s really a freak accident where, however, the button was pressed, it went down and essentially crushed the child,’ Murphy told the Daily Mail.

He pointed to the bodycam video to explain what might have happened.

‘You can see that seat on the left side would not retract back up, and then he presses the button, and it shows that the right side or the passenger side is completely operable,’ Murphy said.

Murphy told the Daily Mail that multiple bystanders pulled Lucia out of the seat and started giving her CPR afterwards.

Murphy added that no charges would stem from Lucia’s accidental death.

A public obituary said Lucia was survived by her dad Arnoldo Ayala, her mother Victoria, her older sister Valentina and a large extended family including grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

It also noted that the little girl’s name had been chosen intentionally, as Lucia means ‘light.’

‘Never has a name been more perfectly given,’ the obit read. ‘Not only did Lucia come into our lives during a season when our family needed her light to shine brightest, but her flame continued to grow and guide us through one of the most pivotal chapters of our lives for two years.’

Lucia was remembered as ‘running around with her many cousins, always trying to keep up with the older kids & making us all laugh.’

A family friend, Michael Yeho, confirmed that he knew about Lucia’s death when contacted by the Daily Mail on Thursday afternoon.

‘Our kids grew up with with their kids,’ Yeho said.

He added that Lucia’s parents were ‘wonderful contributors to the community, very active in their faith.’

‘Just the kind of people you want to have in your life,’ Yeho told the Daily Mail.

Lucia’s funeral was officiated by pastor Jared Orndorff of the Saint Joseph Parish.

When the Daily Mail called the publicly listed number for Orndorff, a church worker said that he was out of town until the end of April but confirmed the funeral had taken place.

Six days after Lucia’s death, Hyundai North America announced that it had issued a recall of its 2026 Hyundai Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims on ‘due to an issue with the second and third-row power seats.’

The company also addressed Lucia’s death, though they did not directly name the little girl, saying it was ‘aware of a tragic incident involving a Palisade.’

Hyundai North America told the Daily Mail that it had ‘finalized the remedy’ for the recall campaign.

‘The final remedy is a software update that addresses a condition in which these power seat functions may not detect contact with an occupant or object as intended,’ a Hyundai North America spokesperson said.

Hyundai added that the update was designed to ‘enhance occupant and object detection.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to Lucia’s parents, Arnoldo Ayala and Victoria Piermarini, as well as extended family members for further comment.

Moscow-Origin Shooter Killed After Kyiv Attack Results in 6 Fatalities and 14 Injuries, Reports Zelenskyy

0

A harrowing incident unfolded in Kyiv on Saturday when a gunman, identified as a Russian national, was killed by special forces after a deadly shooting spree in a supermarket. The attack resulted in the deaths of six individuals and left 14 others injured, including a 12-year-old boy.

The shooter, a 58-year-old man with a long-term residence in the Donetsk region, was originally from Moscow, as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

The armed man took at least four hostages, tragically killing one of them. He also fatally shot four more people on the streets, according to President Zelenskyy. Another victim, a woman, succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital.

Graphic footage captured by bystanders showed the assailant firing at close range at a victim on the street, with other bodies visible on the pavement and in nearby courtyards.

The gunman was seen walking with a weapon on the street.

The gunman was also recorded walking down the street, weapon in hand, during the terrifying event.

Ukranian special forces stormed the convenience store after 40 minutes of failed negotiations, according to Klymenko.

At least fourteen people were wounded in the attack, though officials cautioned the number may rise as people continue to seek medical assistance.

Among the injured is a 12‑year‑old boy and a supermarket security guard, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Zelenskyy said the shooter also set fire to an apartment prior to the attack, though it is unclear if any injuries resulted from the arson.

“My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” Zelenskyy wrote in an X post. “…We wish all the wounded a swift recovery.”

The gunman had previously been prosecuted for criminal offenses, but held a valid weapons permit, according to authorities. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are investigating.

Ukraine’s security service labeled the attack an act of terrorism.

“All available information about him and the motives behind his actions is being thoroughly investigated,” Zelenskyy said. “Every detail must be verified.”

One of the shooter’s neighbors, Hanna Kulyk, 75, described him as an “educated, refined man,” who lived alone and did not socialize often.

“You’d never guess he was some kind of criminal,” Kulyk told The Associated Press.

Tragic Case: Parents Fail to Seek Help as Toddler Dies from Abuse, Says District Attorney

0

Left: Cynthia Robinson (Delaware County District Attorney”s Office). Right: Frank Walton Sr. (Delaware County District Attorney’s Office).

A tragic case has emerged in Pennsylvania where a toddler was subjected to fatal abuse by his parents, who allegedly failed to seek medical assistance and falsely accused one of the child’s siblings of the crime, according to state authorities.

Cynthia Robinson, 34, has been accused by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office of fatally beating her 2-year-old son. The DA’s office has charged her with several offenses, including first-degree murder, third-degree murder, conspiracy to commit third-degree murder, four counts of endangering the welfare of children, and three counts of aggravated assault, as outlined in their official statement.

Her partner, Frank Walton Sr., 58, is accused of obstructing medical aid to cover up the abuse, effectively leading to the child’s death. He faces charges of third-degree murder, conspiracy to commit third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and four counts of endangering the welfare of children.

This heartbreaking incident dates back to November 5, 2025, on Butler Street in Chester. Around 11 p.m., Chester Police Department officers responded to reports of a “small child unresponsive and in cardiac arrest with potential head trauma” at the residence.

The child was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head and torso, as per court documents accessed by Philadelphia CBS affiliate KYW.

The suspects’ three other children were home at the time of the boy’s death, authorities said. Officers began investigating.

“Initially Ms. Robinson blamed the death on one of her other children,” the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office said. However, investigators said they learned that “the scenarios” she described, “specifically her other children being responsible for the child’s death, were factually impossible.”

As detectives dug deeper into the family’s circumstances, they “became aware” that Robinson “had a history of abusing her children.” She was reportedly “on supervision” for endangering the welfare of a child due to “prior instances of drug use in the presence of children.”

Authorities say that on the day before the child died, he was bleeding, and Robinson could be overheard shouting, “F— this little b— I’m going to hit him now, I’m tired of this little b— a— kid.” She then allegedly dropped him from her waist.

“The allegations in this case are both heartbreaking and deeply troubling,” Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said. “A child lost their life at the hands of those who had a fundamental responsibility to love, protect, and care for them. As a father, a coach and a citizen of Delaware County, I’m heartbroken.”

Robinson is in police custody and is set to be arraigned on Monday. Walton is also in police custody; during his arraignment, he was denied bail, and he has a preliminary hearing set for April 28.

Insiders Reveal Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Netflix Party Photos Disappeared

Insiders suggest that the recent removal of photos featuring Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at a Netflix party was prompted by negative feedback. These pictures, which drew criticism, were initially shared but then mysteriously taken down, sparking curiosity and speculation.

According to a source speaking to the Daily Mail on Saturday, images captured at Netflix events by Getty are usually subject to approval by the streaming giant after the event. However, the unusual 24-hour delay in their posting suggests that Netflix might have been making efforts to accommodate its high-profile guests.

The insider further noted that requesting the removal of photos once published is “highly unusual, if not unheard of,” and speculated that the request could only have originated from the Sussexes themselves.

Online reactions to the photos were swift and largely critical, with many commentators describing the images of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex alongside Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and his wife, Nicole Avant, as “cringe” and “unflattering.”

Moreover, some observers felt that the photos portrayed Markle as appearing “needy” and “desperate” for a strategic alliance with Sarandos and Avant, adding another layer of intrigue to the story behind their removal.

A rep for the Sussexes did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

As Page Six previously reported, the pictures were originally taken last Friday at the royal couple’s Montecito, Calif. home, where the streamer hosted an event for its forthcoming “Beef” Season 2 installment.

The snaps were uploaded by a photographer on assignment for Getty, but insiders exclusively told us that Netflix requested the photos be taken down the following morning.

The only remaining photos of the couple at the party on the Getty site are one pic of the Sussexes with Sarandos and Avant, and another where Markle can be seen in the bustling crowd.

At the time, sources told us at least three pictures were removed because they were not great quality.

This wouldn’t be the first time the Sussexes have been at the forefront of a photo mystery.

The couple previously made headlines last November after they were pictured attending Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday, only for their reps to ask for photos to be deleted from the Instagram accounts of both Jenner and her daughter, Kim Kardashian.

The mother-daughter duo later cleared up the “innocent” confusion behind the swiped pictures on an episode of Khloé Kardashian’s podcast,  “Khloé In Wonder Land,” in January, saying the couple “didn’t want to be seen at a party” on Remembrance Day.

“So we took them down to respect Remembrance Day,” Kim said, referring to the holiday that honors armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

Trump Leads Strategic Meeting in Situation Room Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

0

On Saturday, Donald Trump urgently gathered his closest advisors in the situation room to address the tense developments in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by Axios.

The meeting included Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to information from two US officials.

Also present were White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA Director John Ratliffe, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine.

This strategic assembly was prompted by reports that US forces are gearing up to intercept Iran-linked ships imminently, US officials revealed to The Wall Street Journal.

The current US naval blockade of Iranian ports has already forced 23 vessels to retreat, significantly increasing the economic strain on Tehran.

US officials believe the blockade will help facilitate a peace deal, a White House spokesperson told WSJ. However, it has enraged Iranian officials who are continuing to blockade the Strait of Hormuz in response, despite the president announcing it was open yesterday.

The narrow waterway facilitates the transportation of 20 percent of the world’s oil which has been sent soaring to nearly $100 a barrel due to the current Iranian blockade.

It dropped slightly following reports the Strait had reopened. It is unclear how much oil prices will be affected with the Strait closing again.

The two countries are arguing over the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran shut again a day after opening it. On Saturday, two Indian ships were fired at as they moved toward the Strait

The reports emerged against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran which is set to end in three days.

If no permanent deal is met, the war will renew and Trump has warned he could ‘start dropping bombs again.’

On Saturday, the 79-year-old told the press that Iran can’t ‘blackmail’ the US.

‘They wanted to close up the Strait again, as they’ve been doing for years, but they can’t blackmail us,’ Trump said.

Trump claimed that talks between the US and Iran are ‘going very well,’ despite the issue with Iran opening and closing the Strait and threatening ships that enter the oil-rich area.

But as at least two Indian ships were hit by Iranian fire on Saturday as they attempted to pass through the narrow waterway, Trump has allegedly gone into a situation room meeting to discuss the ongoing crisis, Axios reported, citing two US officials.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the Middle Eastern country is reviewing new proposals from the US, but no decision has been made.

Trump had indicated that he suspects a deal could be made by the end of the day, telling reporters: ‘We’ll have some information by the end of the day.

‘We’re talking to them. We’re taking a tough stand. They’ve killed a lot of people. A lot of our people have been killed.’

Trump said on Saturday he is still weighing whether to extend the truce, warning military action remains on the table if talks fail.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House for comment.

On Saturday, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is leading the Iranian delegation, said any interference with the Strait, including mine clearing, would be considered breaking the ceasefire, The New York Times reported.

Iran also reiterated it wanted the US to remove the blockade from the Strait.

‘The Americans have announced a blockade in recent days; this is a reckless and misguided decision,’ Ghalibaf said.

‘It is impossible for others to pass through the Strait of Hormuz while we cannot. If the United States does not lift the blockade, transit through the Strait of Hormuz will certainly be restricted.’

The continued blockage of the Strait of Hormuz by the US broke the ceasefire deal, Iran said.

It also warned that any vessel that moved toward the Strait would be considered in ‘cooperation with the enemy’ and would be targeted.

Iran closed the oil-rich waterway just a day after reopening it due to the blockade.

Pope Leo Clarifies: ‘Handful of Tyrants’ Comment Not Targeted at Trump – Uncover the Real Context

0

Pope Leo XIV clarified on Saturday that his recent comments about the world being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants” were not directed at former President Donald Trump. This clarification was reported following some misinterpretations earlier in the week.

During a flight to Angola as part of his 10-day tour of Africa, the Pope addressed the media, emphasizing that the coverage of his remarks had been “inaccurate in all its aspects.” He explained that his speech had been drafted two weeks prior, long before any comments made by Trump regarding the Pope or his peace initiatives, as reported by Reuters.

Reuters noted that Pope Leo XIV explicitly stated that his remarks were not targeting Trump, aiming to dispel any misconceptions.

“It seemed as though my intention was to engage in a debate with the former president, but that is not my interest whatsoever,” the Pope reportedly clarified.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for comment.

Trump last Sunday accused Pope Leo XIV of being “terrible” on foreign policy as the pontiff has criticized the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

“He talks about ‘fear’ of the Trump Administration, but doesn’t mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian Organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services, even when going outside, and being ten and even twenty feet apart,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

“I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” he continued.

During a speech in Cameroon on Thursday, the pope said, “We must make a decisive change of course — a true conversion — that will lead us in the opposite direction, onto a sustainable path rich in human fraternity.”

“The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants, yet it is held together by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters!” he added.

Elderly Neglect Horror: Son Arrested for Allowing 89-Year-Old Mother to Suffer in Cold Shed with Severe Bedsores

0

Joseph Polizzi (New York State Police).

Authorities in New York have charged a man accused of neglecting his elderly mother, who succumbed to sepsis and bedsores in an unheated shed lacking basic amenities, while he resided just steps away.

Joseph Polizzi, aged 64, faces allegations of criminally negligent homicide and putting the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person at risk in connection to the death of 89-year-old Nancy Polizzi. This development was revealed by the New York State Police in a formal announcement.

Polizzi has since been detained at the Schoharie County Correctional Facility.

On February 23, 2025, police responded to a call about an unattended death at a property in Carlisle, New York. Upon arrival, officers discovered Nancy Polizzi’s lifeless body in a shed located on the premises.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities uncovered that she had been residing in the shed since August 2024, which was without heating or running water, compounding her vulnerable condition.

An autopsy was conducted on Nancy Polizzi’s body, and the doctor ruled that she died from “sepsis as a result of untreated gangrenous decubitus ulceration (bedsores).” The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The investigation continued, with troopers learning Joseph Polizzi was the victim’s son “and primary caretaker as Nancy was unable to walk, feed herself, or speak in the weeks leading up to her death.” He “allegedly did not provide Nancy adequate medical care or seek needed medical treatment for her, which reportedly resulted in her death.”

On Thursday, Joseph Polizzi was arrested at his home and booked into jail. His bail was set at $5,000 cash, $10,000 bond or $50,000 partially secured bond.

Carlisle is a town in upstate New York about 40 miles west of Albany. Data from AccuWeather show temperatures reached lows of 4 degrees Fahrenheit in the town in February 2025.

Trump Condemns Iranian Aggression: Rejects ‘Blackmail’ Amid Strait of Hormuz Ship Attacks

0

The naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have declared the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This announcement was made via a statement on Telegram late at night.

“Any vessel attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz will be deemed as collaborating with adversaries, and such vessels will be engaged,” the IRGC warned in their statement.

Initially reopened on Friday, the Strait saw restrictions reinstated by Iran on Saturday. This move comes after Iran accused the United States of “repeated breaches of trust” regarding an existing ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

According to the British military, two Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats fired upon a tanker as it journeyed through this crucial maritime passage. This incident follows Iran’s reestablishment of restrictions in the area.

Subsequently, a container ship suffered damage from an “unknown projectile,” impacting several containers. This incident occurred approximately 46 kilometers off Oman’s coast, as reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
