SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — In a tragic series of events, a shooter in Louisiana took the lives of eight children in a sequence of domestic-related shootings across multiple residences early Sunday, as reported by Shreveport police.
According to Chris Bordelon, the spokesperson for Shreveport police, the young victims were between the ages of one and approximately 14 years old. A total of 10 individuals were shot in the incidents.

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar from Florida has a defiant stance for those who have been criticizing her Dignity Act, an immigration reform and border security proposal. She is ready to face the backlash head-on.
The Congresswoman from South Florida has been enduring a wave of criticism, not just from right-wing media figures but also from some Republican colleagues in Congress. This has included calls for potential primary challengers aiming to unseat her and any other GOP co-sponsors.
“I welcome it,” Salazar remarked on Thursday regarding the threats of primary challenges. “Those are the rules of the game.”
She expressed her readiness to face these challenges, stating, “I like that game. It’s better than the Cuban game or the Venezuelan or the Iranian. It’s not pretty, it’s not perfect, it’s not comfortable, but it’s the American way of doing business.”
Earlier in the week, Salazar directly confronted one of the most vocal Republican opponents of her bill, Rep. Brandon Gill from Texas, right on the House floor.
“I said, why don’t you explain to me what is it that you know that I don’t about immigration?” Salazar said of their conversation, adding it was “very nice” and that Gill had “some legitimate points.”
Salazar said that she pitched Gill on doing a public, perhaps televised, debate over her legislation.
Asked about that conversation, Gill — first correcting a question about the measure by noting its official name is the Dignidad Act — said he had good conversations with both Salazar and Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), another one of the bill’s cosponsors.
“We’re just diametrically opposed on this issue. I’m taking the conservative side and they’ve taken the Democrat side,” Gill said. “We are so wildly divergent on this issue. It’s hard to imagine how we reach some form of consensus.”
As for a public debate about the bill, Gill said he would be open to doing something like that.
“I think that the bill needs to be scrapped entirely. And we can start with something fresh, and maybe we can discuss that, but I think we’re pretty far off from the Dignidad Act being something that’s actionable,” Gill said. “I don’t think that anybody seriously thinks that I’m going to vote for this under any circumstances with any amendments to it whatsoever.”
Under the legislation, those migrants in the country illegally prior to 2021 — who do not have criminal records — could pay $7,000 in restitution and any back taxes owed and get a new legal status. They would also not be eligible for welfare programs, and the legal status would not provide them a path to citizenship.
The bill separately boosts security, funding for border security and technology, and requires the use of E-Verify, a system to verify immigration status in employment.
Salazar says that because there is no path to citizenship in the bill, it is not “amnesty.”
But conservative critics argue any new legal status would amount to amnesty — pushback that reached a fever pitch online and in conservative media this month.
Conservative commentator and operative Ryan Gidursky last week built on that uproar by launching the Homeland PAC, a super PAC dedicated to “ending the career of every Republican who supports amnesty and sells out the American people on immigration.” A video released alongside the launch listed the Dignity Act’s cosponsors.
This has made some big-tent Republicans nervous, since many of the bill’s co-sponsors — including Salazar — represent competitive districts that Democrats are hoping to flip in the midterms. The fight, they worry, could end up costing Republicans some seats – and the House majority.
The PAC has not yet made moves to support any primary challengers to Republicans backing Salazar’s bill, however, and the filing deadline for the 2026 primary season has already passed in a number of districts. But Gidursky said the quickly-launched PAC is looking at its options, not only for this cycle but in the future.
“It is a corporate giveaway with an abuela on the face of it,” Gidursky said of Salazar’s bill.
That stands in contrast to Salazar’s argument that providing a new legal status would help boost the economy by providing key industries “with the workers that we need.” She highlighted that argument in a press conference last week with the president of the National Association of Manufacturers, Jay Timmons, whose organization has endorsed the Dignity Act.
In other corners of the Republican conference, though, tolerance of the bill could be seen as a political liability. Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) said he has not spoken to his Florida colleague about the bill since criticism exploded in the last few weeks, but added that he felt it was important to let his constituents know where he stands.
“It’s important to tell our base, the people who sent us here, that we’re not going to give amnesty to illegal immigrants,” Fine said. “This is a critical issue. It’s the number one issue with the people that I speak about. It engenders fury, this idea that we would grant amnesty to these illegals.”
While the bill has little chance of getting a vote or becoming law in this Congress, it has ignited a debate among Republicans about whether it is more important to try to combat a decline in support for the GOP among Hispanic and Latino voters who helped propel the party to victory in 2024, or to show voters they are delivering on a hard-line immigration stance.
“I believe that we should be consistent with the central thesis of the last election cycle, which is that the American people want their country back. They voted for mass deportations, and we should do everything we can to fulfill the promises that were made on the campaign trail to deport legal aliens,” Gill said.
But Salazar, who represents a heavily Hispanic and Latino district, retorted that Trump can still “conduct the biggest mass deportation” ever if the bill is enacted, noting it would not give any special status to the millions of migrants that came in during the Biden administration.
The Florida congresswoman said that her critics ultimately “have a valid and a respectable point of view.”
“I don’t agree because I’m telling them, Hey, wake up. Look at the facts,” Salazar said.
The U.S. Secretary of Energy has expressed optimism about the trajectory of gas prices, noting that they have reached their peak and are likely to continue decreasing. However, he cautioned that it might be some time before prices drop below $3 per gallon again.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright suggested that it might not be until next year that average gas prices return to below $3 per gallon, a level last seen before the conflict with Iran escalated on February 28.
Currently, the national average for a gallon of gas is slightly above $4, according to the American Automobile Association. In certain parts of the country, especially on the West Coast, prices are even steeper, with California nearing $6 per gallon.
Speaking with CNN on Sunday, Wright emphasized that the United States has successfully managed the global oil supply disruptions caused by the conflict involving Iran, and that the most severe effects are now behind us.
“Bringing this 47-year-long conflict to a close and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons has certainly resulted in temporary disruptions. However, I believe we have handled the situation remarkably well,” Wright stated during the interview.
‘Here we are in the middle of the largest interruption in [the] flow of energy ever, and gasoline prices peaked a week ago, about a dollar below the peak during the Biden administration.’
Gas prices under Biden indeed peaked at just over $5 per gallon in June 2022, caused by factors such as the invasion of Ukraine and post-pandemic demand, but by the time Trump took office, prices had returned to about $3.10.
When asked about when Americans might see numbers at the pump closer to that $3 mark or below, Wright cautioned: ‘That might not happen until next year, but prices have likely peaked, and they’ll start going down.’

‘Certainly, with a resolution of this conflict, you’ll see prices go down,’ he added.
On April 7, the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, which immediately drove crude oil futures down from about $112 to about $75.
But peace talks have faced roadblocks and the cease-fire has been wobbly, particularly due to Israel continuing to launch strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Crude oil futures thus climbed back up to $90 and stayed around that level.
On April 16, Lebanon and Israel agreed to a ten-day cessation of hostilities in order to conduct negotiations, which caused oil futures to drop back down closer to $80 and created enormous optimism in the market.
The optimism was further buoyed the next day by Iran announcing that the Strait of Hormuz was reopened, even as the US continues to blockade the waterway and prevent Iranian ships from leaving.

By Saturday morning, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboats fired on at least three commercial vessels, according to maritime security reports.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said that the US’s blockade, which has turned away at least 23 ships since it began on April 13, is a violation of the ceasefire agreement and that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until it is lifted.
Trump has said that the blockade will remain in place until the peace talks are over and the US and Iran have reached an agreement. After the Strait of Hormuz was closed again, Trump said that Iran could not blackmail the US.
All of these developments since Friday have sapped the short-lived optimism that drove oil prices back down and sent the stock market soaring, but the market’s exact reaction will not be completely clear until it reopens Monday morning.

In a devastating incident that has rocked Shreveport, Louisiana, eight children, including an infant, lost their lives in a mass shooting. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday night when a gunman, in a fit of madness, targeted three different homes across the city.
Authorities report that a total of ten individuals were struck by gunfire, with eight succumbing to their injuries. The victims, tragically, ranged in age from just one year old to 14 years. The Shreveport Police Department confirmed that some of those killed were related to the assailant, described as his “descendants,” during a news briefing by spokesperson Christopher Bordelon.
Following the horrific events, the shooter attempted to flee the scene by carjacking a vehicle. However, his escape was thwarted when police officers intercepted and fatally shot him. Officials have revealed that the crime scene extended across two homes on a single street and a third home located nearby, underscoring the extensive nature of the attack.
Following the shooting, the gunman carjacked a vehicle and tried to escape, before being shot dead by cops, according to authorities.
The crime scene was described as “extensive” and spanned two homes on the same street and a third on a nearby street.
“The individual responsible once leaving this scene performed a carjacking right here in close proximity to the corner of West 79th and Lynnwood, at which point in time, Shreveport police patrol officers got behind that vehicle in a chase incident,” Bordelon said.
In an unexpected turn of events in Temecula, California, a hot air balloon with 13 passengers made an unplanned landing in a residential backyard, leaving local homeowners astonished. The incident, captured on video, has now become a topic of conversation as the homeowners share their remarkable story with KABC, an ABC affiliate.
Saturday morning took a surprising twist for one Temecula household as the hot air balloon descended upon their property. It was an unconventional landing no one saw coming.
The unexpected arrival unfolded around 8:30 a.m. while the homeowner, Hunter Perrin, was unwinding in front of the television. A sudden knock from a neighbor prompted him to the door.
“I opened the door, and the neighbor exclaimed, ‘They just landed in your backyard!'” Perrin recounted, still in disbelief. “I was completely taken aback!”
Curiosity piqued, Perrin and his wife, Jenna, who had been in another part of the house, hurried outside to witness the unusual scene firsthand.
“I open the sliding glass door, and there’s a basket full of thirteen people in my backyard!” Perrin said. “The pilot, he was masterful. He got it right down inside, like directly into the backyard, where there was nothing. The balloon didn’t catch on anything. No one was injured.”
The homeowners say the hot air balloon pilot told them the wind died, forcing him to make an emergency landing.
“You can kind of see in the video of how they came in. He kind of plopped straight down and was moving very slowly,” Perrin said.
“And I run to the backyard, and there’s a whole group of people that are just waving at me,” Jenna said. “And I’m like, ‘Oh my God. So the sound I heard was the flames?!’ And I’m like… hi!’”
Incredibly, there was no damage in the backyard and no one was injured.
KABC spoke to one of the passengers about the moments that led up to the emergency landing.
“At first I was like, ‘Oh my God! We’re in a backyard! This is crazy!’” said hot air balloon passenger Brianna Avalos.
Avalos and her husband were taking their first hot air balloon ride to celebrate their 10th anniversary. As they started approaching the neighborhood, Avalos says the pilot made an announcement.
“He said there’s not enough wind, because the wind kind of like, stopped a little bit. And he was like, ‘We’re going to land.’ And we only had a little bit of fuel left,” Avalos said.
Neighbors gathered in the street to watch.
“He was trying to get us to the street, but we couldn’t get to the street in time, so we landed in the people’s backyard safe and sound, like no one’s hurt, everyone’s great. He was an amazing pilot!” Avalos said.

An Iranian woman known for her luxurious lifestyle in Los Angeles has been arrested on charges of trafficking lethal drones and explosives for Iran.
Authorities detained 44-year-old Shamim Mafi at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday night. She faces charges of allegedly facilitating the sale of drones, explosives, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition intended for Sudan, as announced by the US Attorney for the Central District of California on Sunday.
According to officials, Mafi left Iran in 2013 and was granted permanent resident status in the United States in 2016 during the Obama administration.
Residing in Woodland Hills, Mafi is accused of using Atlas International Business, a company registered in Oman, to arrange weapons transactions as recently as 2025. This information was revealed in court documents accessed by the New York Post.
Among her dealings was a contract exceeding $70 million for Mohajer-6 armed drones, which are produced by Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics.
Those drones and 55,000 bomb fuses were transfered in deals with the Sudanese Ministry of Defense, which has beeen fighting in a violent civil war since 2023.
According to phone records included in court documents, Mafi had direct contact with Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) between December 2022 and June 2025.
During her time in America, Mafi has shared pictures of her living the high life, including an image of her posing in a $100,000 Mercedes-Benz.

She told investigators that she has never been hired by Iran to conduct any activites for Tehran on American soil.
Meanwhile, prosecutors said Mafi had no legal clerance to oversee the alleges dangerous sales.
A previous investigation revealed that Tehran seized properties that Mafi inherited from her father in 2020, according to court records.
The Ministry of Intelligence then told her to open a business in the US to buy the properties back from the Iranian government, court records stated.
According to prosecutors, Iran also offered to pay for her start-up costs.
Mafi allegedly said that she is ‘more useful’ to the Iranian spies in Tehran than in the US, prosecutors said.
Her and her company have also been accused of intentionally going through channels in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates to conduct sales as way to avoid detection from the US, the outlet reported.
In addition to sharing glimpses of her swanky life, Mafi also posted images of her business dealings in Turkey.

In the post, Öncel said: ‘Our best friend from America Shamim Mafi Doing business talks. It was a beneficial discussion with our Sudanese businessman brother for the country’s economy.’
Before she was handcuffed, Mafi was scheduled to fly to Istanbul, the post reported.
She is accused of violating the Conspiracy to Violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
If convicted, she could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.
She is due to appear at the US District Court in Los Angeles on Monday, prosecutors said.
The Daily Mail contacted the US Attorney for the Central District of California for comment.
A representative for Mafi could not immediatley be reached for comment.
