Tragic Double Drowning Highlights Lifeguard Shortage Crisis at Popular Beach Destination

0

For many years, the lifeguard stands along Florida’s Space Coast have been iconic markers of safety for tourists and locals alike. However, this season presents a stark contrast, with numerous stands left unattended as Brevard County is urgently seeking to fill 45 essential positions. This shortage has already had devastating consequences, with two individuals tragically losing their lives while attempting to save a child caught in a dangerous rip current.

“We’re working with the resources available to us,” stated Brevard County Ocean Rescue Chief Eisen Witcher. “We assess risks as thoroughly as possible. While we strive to be there when needed, it’s simply not feasible to cover every moment.”

This past Wednesday, emergency services were summoned to Cocoa Beach, a popular destination, following reports of four individuals in distress in the water. Among them were a 42-year-old man from Connecticut and a 34-year-old woman from Ohio. Despite being rushed to the hospital, both succumbed to their injuries.

The adults, whose identities have not been disclosed, entered the water in an attempt to rescue a child. While the relationship between the adults and the child was initially unclear, it was later reported by Florida Today that the woman was the child’s stepmother, and the man was a bystander who tried to help. Thankfully, the child survived the incident.

The tragic events highlight the urgent need for more lifeguards, as the absence of sufficient personnel can have dire consequences. As the county continues to address the shortage, the community remains on edge, hoping to prevent further tragedies.

Witcher said that the area where the rip current claimed the lives of two adults was not being guarded with lifeguards.

He said that they’ve been experiencing high surf, with waves from 6-8 feet tall.

“Conditions are starting to subside, making the ocean a lot more calm or appearing to look more calm. But those surf conditions have caused significant damage to the sandbars causing flash rip currents,” Witcher said.

According to the National Weather Center, the Florida coast – from south of Palm Coast to Miami – is identified as a high risk for rip currents.

“It’s very fast, it’s very unexpected, and you can lose your footing very quickly. We watch, we try to prevent that as much as we possibly can in our life-guarded areas. Outside of a life-guarded area, it’s very difficult for people from out of town or tourists to know or understand or what to do,” Witcher said.

The chief said that the nearest lifeguard was 3/4 of a mile away at the time of the emergency.

Right now, we are actively recruiting for more lifeguards. We have been for the better part of two or three months now,” Witcher said, explaining that they have a tryout this weekend. “We’d like to see at least 45 more [lifeguards].

In situations where there is no nearby lifeguard, calling 911 is your best bet, he said.

Shocking Allegations: Daughter Accused of Abusing and Desecrating Elderly Mother’s Remains

An Oklahoma woman has been taken into custody following allegations of mistreating her elderly mother and disrespecting her remains in a home overwhelmed with animals and squalor, authorities from the Sooner State have reported.

Shannon Solomon-Webb, 38, faces charges of caretaker abuse, desecration of a human corpse, and animal cruelty, as detailed in Wagoner County court documents examined by Law&Crime.

According to court records, Solomon-Webb was apprehended on April 9. At present, she does not appear on the list of inmates in the county jail.

The incident came to light when the defendant’s husband contacted emergency services to report her mother’s passing, as per a probable cause affidavit acquired by Tulsa’s CBS affiliate, KOTV.

However, law enforcement officials have indicated that the emergency call was made much too late.

“As soon as you enter the front door, all you have to do is, is look to your right,” Wagoner Police Department Lt. Det. Clarence Collins said. “There’s no way you can’t see her…There’s no way you can’t see this individual lying on the bed.”

Inside the residence, there were roughly 20 dogs of various ages, police said. The animals were allegedly living among their own waste.

The defendant got into an argument with her mother about moving to a care facility, according to police. So, Solomon-Webb said she wanted to “respect her wishes,” and “limited the time she spent at the house,” according to the charging document.

The victim suffered from lupus and had trouble breathing, police said. When investigators asked Solomon-Webb if she and her husband were in charge of the older woman’s health, safety, and general daily needs, the defendant allegedly replied: “Yes that would be accurate we are her care givers,” according to the affidavit.

Investigators were not impressed with the apparent levels of care.

“They had placed a microwave on the bed, and they had placed…instant meals that you just had to put in the microwave, pot pies, stuff like that, and some water,” Collins continued in comments to KOTV.

The precise date of the victim’s death is unknown as of this writing.

The medical examiner’s office said the rate of decomposition was consistent with the elderly woman having been dead at least one week. Collins, however, told the TV station he believes she had been dead for perhaps as long as a month before the 911 call was made.

“Ms. Solomon was so decomposed that she was – it was like seeing the mummy from ancient, an ancient mummy,” the detective said. “Her skin and everything was so leathered. I don’t know how else to describe it other than she appeared to be an ancient mummy that didn’t have the wrapping.”

As of now, the dogs and puppies in the case are considered evidence. The police department is trying to obtain permission to gain legal possession and give them up for adoption.

“It’s pretty difficult,” Collins went on. “We all have mothers that, we wouldn’t, we wouldn’t want treated in any type of way like that. I can’t imagine somebody treating their own mother that way.”

The defendant’s husband was also arrested along with his wife. He is a member of the Cherokee Nation, so it will be up to tribal authorities to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.

Solomon-Webb was released on bail over the weekend. She is next slated to appear in court for her arraignment on May 6.

Authorities Probe Incident Involving Off-Duty Officer and 13-Year-Old Girl on Perth Train

0

Authorities in Western Australia are currently investigating an incident involving an off-duty police officer who reportedly restrained a 13-year-old girl on a train in Perth.

As part of the investigation, police are reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the train. This step is described by WA Police as a standard procedure in such cases.

While the Public Transport Authority has not yet released its CCTV footage, a video recorded by the girl’s friend has surfaced on social media, shedding light on the incident.

This smartphone video captures the off-duty officer restraining the young girl on the ground before moving her to a seat. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Sunday on the Yanchep Line.

In the background of the video, the girl’s friends can be heard expressing concern, shouting phrases such as “her head, her head,” as the officer appears to pin the girl down at one stage.

Police today said the 13-year-old had allegedly assaulted the officer by punching him in the face after he intervened in a verbal altercation between two groups.

Globally Prohibited Baby Names: A Look at International Naming Restrictions

0

In the realm of celebrity culture, the trend of choosing distinctive baby names is thriving. From Molly-Mae’s daughter Bambi to Kourtney Kardashian’s son Rocky, and even Gwyneth Paltrow’s famously unique choice of Apple, the quest for uncommon names is not just a Hollywood phenomenon—it has permeated some British households as well.

Statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal a decline in the popularity of several traditional British baby names. Names such as Freda, Bessie, Cecil, and Percy were recorded 150 times or fewer in 2024, representing a mere 0.02 percent or less of the babies born that year. This signals a potential extinction for these once-common monikers as parents increasingly opt for more modern or distinctive choices.

While some parents are steering clear of classics like Emma and Oliver, there are certain names that are simply not allowed in various parts of the world due to legal restrictions. These rules are often put in place to safeguard children from potential harm associated with certain names.

In Japan, for example, names with negative or violent connotations are prohibited. Similarly, in Sweden, a court intervened when a couple attempted to name their child after a popular chocolate and hazelnut spread, deeming it inappropriate. Although the UK does not enforce specific bans on names, other countries take a more protective stance to ensure the well-being and dignity of the child.

Japan, for instance, refuses names with dark or violent meanings, while a Swedish court once ordered two new parents to rename their child after they attempted to use the title of a well-known chocolate and hazelnut spread.

In Denmark, primates are banned from name use, while a Welsh court previously blocked a mother’s attempt to register her daughter under the name of Cyanide, a lethal substance.

In the US, Santa Claus was denied, while Jesus Christ has also seen numerous court rejections on the grounds of possible blasphemy.

Read on to discover which niche baby names expecting parents should avoid, and which nations have a surprising number of restrictions on new parents’ choices…

Europe

Despite the influx of unlikely names sweeping across European nations, there are a number of restrictions placed on welcoming parents looking for less common monikers.

While UK restrictions are few and far between, in 2016 a mother in Powys, Wales, was legally banned by the Court of Appeal from using the name Cyanide for her daughter.

While she insisted it was a ‘lovely, pretty name’, the poisonous substance, which was taken by Adolf Hitler, was deemed too ‘extreme’ for the child.

In 2015, a French judge banned parents from naming their daughter Nutella – because it is the trademarked name of a chocolate spread – and renamed her Ella instead.

After a newborn baby in Valenciennes was named after the spread, the judge ruled the parents’ decision was not in the interest of the child.

In Denmark a request by parents to name their new child Monkey was rejected due to the country’s strict Law on Personal Names which requires parents to choose names from a pre-approved list of around 7,000 options.

In Germany the name Adolf Hitler is banned, with the first name being incredibly rare and widely discouraged. Osama Bin Laden was also rejected as a name choice.

And while Sweden may be the home of the popular Ikea brand, the country prohibits parents from using it as a possible name for a child.

Likewise, for those hoping to name their child after their favourite band or music artist, Swedish parents are forced to think otherwise due to an 1982 ‘Naming Law’.

The law states that first names will not be approved if they can cause offense or cause discomfort for the one using it, or are unsuitable.

As a result, both Metallica and Elvis have been rejected, alongside Superman and Veranda.

In 1991 the 43-character name  Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (which they pronounced ‘Albin’) was, unsurprisingly, refused.

Under Swiss law, a child’s name is prohibited from being ‘harmful or infringing the rights of others’, while biblical or historical villain names are disallowed.

The US

While numerous celebrities have embraced untraditional names, a number of unique names have been scrutinised by courts across the US due to concerns for the child’s welfare and public perception.

Different states hold their own respective restrictions, however, most prohibit names that feature numerals, emojis or symbols, alongside obscenities.

As a result, Elon Musk was forced to change the name of his child from X Æ A-12 to X Æ A-XII as California law declares that numbers cannot be included in names.

In Arkansas and New Mexico, Baby Girl and Baby Boy are off the cards, while New Mexico also disobeys the use of Male or Female as a name.

In March 2000, a 53-year-old man’s request to change his legal name to Santa Robert Claus was denied by a judge, who argued that the use of a ‘Santa Obituary’ when he passed away could leave children confused and heartbroken.

Meanwhile, various state courts and officials have also rejected the name ‘Jesus Christ’ in a bid to avoid causing any religious offence.

Australia and New Zealand

Down Under, unique baby names have not been quite as well received by officials, who have prohibited the use of names such as President, Emperor and Lieutenant. Duke is also considered a royal title and therefore disallowed.

New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs routinely rejects the name Lucifer, a name for the devil, while a judge perceived the names Fish and Chips for twins as likely to cause distress.

Names must not be any longer than 100 characters, while other bizarre proposals rejected by Australian officials include brother and sister, smelly and spinach.

In 2008, a nine-year-old girl from New Zealand with the name Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii had her name changed by a Family Court judge who deemed it a ‘social disability and handicap, unnecessarily’.

Asia

In Japan, kirakira (shiny or glittery) names for babies have been restricted in a bid to prevent parents naming their children after famous characters or music stars.

This means that those who have selected names that deviate from convention must now explain their decision in writing, while also providing a suitable alternative.

Meanwhile, in China the government prohibits names that ‘exaggerate religious fervor’ or are perceived as ‘too extreme’.

Foreign languages, alphabets, numbers or special characters are also restricted from being included in names.

Tragic Safari Proposal: Influencer’s Death Sparks Investigation as Fiancé Faces Police Scrutiny, Family Seeks Justice

0

The fiancé of a well-known New Jersey social media influencer is currently under investigation following her tragic death during what was supposed to be a dream vacation near the African coast. Authorities report that she was discovered in an apparent suicide attempt.

Ashly Robinson, who also went by the name Ashlee Jenae, passed away while celebrating her 31st birthday in Zanzibar. This trip was meant to be a joyous occasion, as it came just days after her engagement to her boyfriend, Joe McCann. However, Robinson’s family has raised concerns, describing her death as “suspicious.”

Local authorities have determined Robinson’s death to be a suicide, stating that she attempted to hang herself from her hotel room door on April 9. Despite being rushed to a hospital, she succumbed to her injuries the following day.

She was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries one day later.

Tanzania Police have since revealed Robinson’s death is “attributed to a misunderstanding” between the influencer and McCann, while adding that the incident forced hotel staff to separate the newly engaged couple by placing McCann in another room “for their safety.”

In a Tuesday update, Tanzania Police said McCann “continues to be questioned by the Police Force and his passport has been suspended,” though authorities did not elaborate on the nature of the investigation.

Sources have since told the BBC that McCann was being interviewed as a witness in the case and is not accused of any wrongdoing.

In light of Robinson’s death, her family is disputing authorities’ ruling that the 31-year-old influencer died by suicide.

Speaking to TMZ, Robinson’s parents, Harry and Yolanda Robinson, said they do not believe their daughter would take her own life, adding, “She was a beacon of light. A happy, go-lucky girl. Very excited to go on this birthday trip which later turned into a proposal.”

The family reportedly said McCann called them 11 hours after Robinson was hospitalized to let them know she was stable, and later informed them that their daughter had died.

Robinson’s parents told TMZ they have not heard from McCann since she died, a development that they find “very very odd,” FOX 29 reported.

“The sadness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family,” Robinson’s parents said in a statement shared to social media.

“At this time, there is an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ashly’s suspicious passing,” they added.

Robinson was a popular social media influencer prior to her death, boasting 145,000 followers on Instagram while posting lifestyle content to her page. She often shared photos of herself with McCann, with one of her final posts showing her feeding giraffes while on vacation in Zanzibar.

Fox News Digital reached out to McCann. It was not immediately clear if McCann had retained an attorney.

Authorities: Toddler Found Unattended in Garage as Man Focuses on Truck Repair

0

A 20-year-old man from West Virginia is facing allegations of leaving a toddler unattended in a frigid garage while he worked on his truck, resulting in the child becoming ill.

Ian Newlon

Ian Newlon (North Central Regional Jail via WBOY).

According to court documents from Ritchie County, Ian Newlon was taken into custody last week on charges of child neglect, which posed a significant risk of death or serious injury. The local NBC station, WBOY, reported on the criminal complaint linked to the incident, which took place in February when temperatures plummeted to 2 degrees.

West Virginia State Police became involved in the case when two individuals sought a protective order against Newlon. The suspect had left the toddler with them after some time, and they found the child in poor condition, with a soiled diaper and symptoms of vomiting and coughing. The child was subsequently hospitalized for treatment.

During their investigation, officers interviewed Newlon, who reportedly admitted to leaving the boy in the garage while he was busy with his truck. Although the garage had a wood stove for heat, it was inadequate given the garage’s size and the extreme cold outside, according to the police.

Investigators later spoke with Newlon, who allegedly said he was “working on his truck” and left the boy in the garage. The garage was heated with a wood stove, but it was not being “sufficiently” warmed because of its size and the temperature outside, cops said.

Cops arrested Newlon on Saturday and took him to the North Central Regional Jail.

He posted a $15,000 bond on Tuesday, jail records show. Newlon was appointed a public defender and has yet to enter a plea. His next court date was not listed.

The report did not indicate Newlon’s relation to the boy.

The child’s updated condition was not divulged in the criminal complaint.

China Issues Travel Advisory: Scholars Targeted in the US – What You Need to Know

0
China’s foreign ministry has issued a warning to citizens travelling to the US, warning of “malicious questioning” at the border.

Travelers heading to the United States have been advised to steer clear of entering the country via Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. This caution follows an incident involving approximately 20 Chinese scholars who, despite having valid visas, faced what was described as “unreasonable inspections” by Customs and Border Protection officials, ultimately leading to their denial of entry.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy responded to these reports, stating that Chinese academics have encountered repeated harassment at this particular airport. In light of these issues, they recommended that Chinese citizens planning to visit the US prioritize their safety and security by considering alternative airports for entry.

Furthermore, the foreign ministry emphasized the importance of being well-informed about US entry requirements. They encouraged travelers to prepare thoroughly for their journeys.

“If you find yourself being questioned by US authorities, it’s crucial to remain calm and handle the situation rationally,” advised an official statement on social media.

“If you encounter questioning from US enforcement personnel, you should deal with it calmly and rationally,” according to a translation of the tweet.

The Australian government’s Smartraveller advice does not warn against travelling to the US, asking Australians to exercise “normal safety precautions”.

“Entry requirements are strict. US authorities have broad powers to decide if you’re eligible to enter and may determine that you are inadmissible for any reason under US law,” the Smartraveller advice reads.

“Check US entry, registration, transit and exit requirements. Whether you’re travelling on a visa or under the Visa Waiver Program, ensure you understand all relevant terms and conditions before attempting to enter the United States.”

Australians travelling to China are advised to “exercise a high degree of caution”.

“As previously advised, authorities have detained foreigners on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’,” the entry reads.

“Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention, exit bans or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws.”

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Requested to Relinquish Freedom of the City of London Honor

0

On April 17, 2026, it was reported that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor may be asked to voluntarily renounce his Freedom of the City of London. The City of London Corporation intends to request this action following a series of controversies surrounding the former prince.

Andrew, once a prominent royal figure, was stripped of his titles and royal privileges last October by King Charles. This decision was made in light of Andrew’s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Despite losing his royal status, Andrew had retained the honor of being a freeman of the City of London, which he was awarded in 2012. This honor was granted “by virtue of patrimony,” a tradition that allowed him to inherit the freedom from his father, the late Prince Philip, who was also a freeman.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will be asked to give up the Freedom of the City of London

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will be asked to give up the Freedom of the City of London

Recently, the City of London Corporation faced a dilemma regarding Andrew’s honor following his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. A review conducted in March revealed that the corporation lacks the legal authority to revoke the honor due to the manner in which it was originally granted. As a result, they are left with the option of requesting that Andrew voluntarily relinquish this privilege.

A spokesperson for the City of London Corporation clarified the situation, stating, “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right.” This statement underscores the unique and hereditary nature of the honor, which complicates any efforts to revoke it without Andrew’s consent.

A spokesman for the City of London Corporation explained: “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right.

“Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of freedom.

“Elected members have today agreed to write to Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to formally relinquish the freedom. They will consider the response received, if any, at a future meeting, and determine what action may be taken.”

The honour – which is believed to have begun in 1237 and enabled recipients to carry out their trade – is typically awarded to people nominated by corporation councillors and all of Andrew’s siblings have the freedom of the City of London, as do the likes of Sir Lenny Henry and Cate Blanchett.

The announcement comes a few weeks after Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was stripped of the Freedom of the City of York following a unanimous vote from councillors, who cited concerns about the author’s links to Epstein, who died in 2019 aged 66.

The honorary title had been awarded to Sarah in 1987 following her marriage to Andrew, but councillors said the association raised questions about whether she met the standards expected of recipients.

Their motion, passed under Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, formally withdrew the status.

The move follows earlier action in 2022 when Andrew – the former Duke of York – was also stripped of the honour.

Following the release of the Epstein files, records from Companies House showed six companies linked to Sarah began winding down operations, while her charity, Sarah’s Trust, announced it would close “for the foreseeable future”.

LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Rising Star Amen Thompson: The Ultimate NBA Showdown

0

The unfolding drama of the first-round series between the Rockets and the Lakers reveals an almost poetic reversal of fortunes.

Merely three weeks back, the Lakers were riding high, showcasing the prowess of one of the NBA’s elite teams, seemingly poised for an impressive playoff journey. In stark contrast, the Rockets appeared to be floundering through March, desperately searching for stability.

Now, in a dramatic twist of fate, the scenarios have been flipped on their heads.

The Lakers stagger into the playoffs, grappling with the absence of their leading scorers, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, whose combined contribution of nearly 60 points per game has vanished like a wisp of smoke.

Meanwhile, the Rockets have found their stride, entering the postseason on a high, having triumphed in nine of their last ten encounters. Their resurgence can be credited to a redefined identity that revolves around a robust defensive strategy.

The Lakers will try to hold onto the rope long enough for their two stars to try to come back later in the series. Until then, here are some of the matchups to look for:

LeBron vs the Machine

The Lakers’ only chance of getting past Houston without Doncic and Reaves hangs on the back of a 41-year-old LeBron James.

Houston won’t treat him like a king. The Rockets will treat him like the head of the snake. Stop him and let the role players try to beat you. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Houston has a lot of players on its roster who can do that.

Let’s start with Amen Thompson — long, relentless and unapologetically physical. He finished fifth for NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting last season, and we expect another top-five finish this year. Thompson will take on the assignment of guarding James straight up at times, stripping away the need for help defense thereby allowing the rest of the players to stay home on their assignments.

When Thompson’s not on LeBron, the Rockets can also throw 6-foot-11 forward Jabari Smith Jr. on him with his over 7-foot wingspan. If they want a different look, Houston coach Ime Udoka can also put 6-8 physical forward Tari Eason on him.

Alperen Sengun vs DeAndre Ayton: The Battle Beneath

In a series defined by perimeter defenders and NBA legends, the most important matchup in the series might happen in the paint.

Turkish big man Alperen Sengun is now a fulcrum. He’s a two-time All-Star and a problem in the paint who demands constant attention. The assignment of guarding him belongs to former No. 1 overall draft pick Deandre Ayton.

In his first season with the purple and gold, Ayton has been inconsistent, his focus and effort drifting at times — until recently. The last six weeks have offered a glimpse into what he can be when he’s engaged, physical, present and focused.

Ayton has the most difficult assignment of any Lakers player. Rebound everything. Keep the Rockets off the offensive glass. Contain Sengun as much as he can, be the rim defender when the Lakers switch to a zone defense and run the pick and roll with James and Luke Kennard in order to make a dent on offense as well.

Different Defensive Looks and Disruption

Not an individual matchup, but we expect the Lakers to give the Rockets different looks on defense throughout the series. The team frustrated its opponents throughout the season by switching to a zone defense during games. We expect some zone looks in this series as well.

Houston isn’t a strong 3-point shooting team outside of Reed Sheppard, which could allow the Lakers to play zone sometimes and dare the Rockets to beat them from distance. They also want to disrupt passing lanes, force turnovers and blitz Kevin Durant. Blitzing Durant when he had the ball worked in their last two matchups in Houston. In their first matchup March 16, they erased a six-point halftime deficit by blitzing Durant and holding him scoreless the entire second half until a last-second layup in garbage time.

The Rockets have one of the slowest paces of play and will want to slow down the game and grind it to a halt in the half court. The Lakers, meanwhile, need chaos and to get out in transition. Quick strikes before the Rockets’ defense can even set up.

Houston will need Sheppard’s 3-point shooting in this series, but when he’s on the floor, look for LeBron and the Lakers to hunt him on defense. Drag him into screens. Force switches. Attack.

LeBron James vs. Kevin Durant: The Last of the Mohicans

Durant is the quiet storm that hovers over this series. Houston’s elite perimeter defenders allow Durant to expend his energy on the offensive end of the floor, where he can take over entire games.

The Lakers will likely throw the smaller Marcus Smart and stronger Rui Hachimura at him, hoping the combination can disrupt his rhythm. LeBron will even guard him at times as well. Help will inevitably come. It has to. But every second defender you throw at Durant allows someone else to be wide open.

If Houston finds those players and they make those shots, the Lakers are in big trouble.

Expect James to have the ball in his hands most of the time on offense, hunting mismatches and forcing Houston to make tough decisions. On defense, LeBron will lurk, providing help on Durant.

This might be the final chapter between LeBron and Durant and who wins the individual battles could be the player who leads his team to victory in the series.

Game 1 on Saturday will go a long way to decide who will win the series. Both teams will try to set the tempo early and impose their will. Houston has the momentum, the depth and the defense that travels.

The Lakers have LeBron, shooting and the hope that if they hold onto the rope long enough, Doncic and Reaves can return to rescue them later in the series.

“This is an exhibit that is very much intentionally designed to tap into, right, the hearts of the Chicago Puerto Ricans, but also the Puerto Ricans that are coming from Ohio,” Corrigan Cuadrado said.

Puerto Rico is a U.S territory and has been since 1898. The museum includes multiple installations, like this one, that pay homage to how Spanish culture merged with Puerto Rican and much more.

Then we move to The Chicago History Museum, where “US at 250: Civic Action in Chicago” is on display. One exhibition in particular, highlights the Latino community, as a whole.

“It chronicles the ways that Latino people within the state of Illinois, and in particular the city of Chicago, have engaged in varied types of civic action, whether it’s through direct protests, art making, placemaking, establishing businesses,” Erica Griffin, the Elizabeth F. Cheney Director of Education.
You can also see a copy of the Northwest Ordinance. The document that helped establish Illinois as a state and banned enslavement in the area.

“And what we hope that people take away from our project is that the development of Chicago is an echo of the nation,” Griffin said.

Then there’s the Newberry Library, where the “Free & Independent” exhibition lives. Inside you can find all kinds of original documents central to the founding of the nation.

“When we say original, we mean original,” Will Hansen of the Newberry Library said. “So these are real things that are 250 or so years old. Printed or in some cases handwritten by The people who were there at the time, making this revolution happen in the what is now the United States of America.

And last but not least, Graceland Cemetery on Chicago’s North Side. It’s one of the city’s most historic resting places. Known for its landscaped grounds and striking monuments, it became the final home for many of Chicago’s most influential figures, including architects and business leaders.

Next week, we’ll explore even more stops featured in the passport released by the Illinois America 250 Commission.
