BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. () — Following an uptick in emergency incidents, a Bulloch County Fire official has provided essential safety guidelines to assist residents in safeguarding themselves and their homes.
In July alone, Bulloch County’s 911 dispatchers handled over 1,000 fire-related calls, highlighting the growing concern in the area.
Fire Prevention Chief Joe Carter emphasizes that the most critical safety equipment in your home is your alerts system.
“The top priority is having functioning smoke alarms,” Carter noted. “Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors serve as your primary defense. They alert you to a fire in your home, offering an early warning so you can evacuate safely.”
In addition, he advised, “I highly recommend keeping an ABC fire extinguisher at the ready in your home for minor incidents. Your first action should always be dialing 911, and if possible, use the extinguisher, but ensure you’re between the fire and the exit before attempting to do so.”
Carter also said to be aware of power sources.
“I encourage people to minimize the use of extension cords,” he said. “Extension cords are for temporary use, and a lot of times, we see situations where people have them permanently installed to be running in appliances, pulling way too many amps to be running off of a small extension cord.”
Nationwide, lithium-ion batteries have become an issue, he said.
“We remind people to make sure we’re getting UL-tested products and chargers and original equipment to replace those,” Carter said. “The usual issue with lithium-ion batteries is that the batteries become damaged or they may be overcharged or go through some type of heat cycle; that’s sometimes related to the charging system, so we want to make sure that’s original equipment or that we’ve got the adequate equipment.”
He continued, “Charge everything on a flat surface and away from combustibles.”
Carter said these tips and more can be beneficial to Georgia Southern University students moving or returning to campus this fall.
“Just be responsible,” he asks. “No unattended cooking. Make sure that you do have your smoke alarms in place. Obviously, you don’t want to be smoking indoors or anything of that variety. Kids sometimes have a habit of going to sleep with your cell phone under their pillow. Again, that’s a lithium-ion battery. That’s not the place that it needs to be.”
Carter also spoke to about commercial property fire safety and why residences are usually at a higher risk.
“Bulloch County has an inspections program,” he said. “We inspect our properties for life safety code and OCGA. As a result, obviously we’re in those properties, and we’re making sure they’re code compliant for people and business patrons to go in, and we don’t necessarily have that situation in residential structures. A lot more safety precautions in commercial property due to the way that the codes are written.”
He also said sometimes there isn’t much owners can do to prevent fires. Recently, two structure fires as well as the Buie Driggers Wildfire were caused by a lightning strike.
“Lightning is an act of nature,” Carter said. “Not really anything you can do to prevent that, but to protect your interests, make sure that your insurance policy is up to date. There is such a thing as protecting your interests by going through your home and videoing the contents so that you know what’s there if you have to file a proof of loss. It’s much easier to know what’s within your property and to be more prepared to deal with the paperwork that follows.”
Bulloch County remains under a burn ban. Any violator could face up to a $1,000 fine or 60 days in jail.
Luciano Frattolin, once celebrated for his success with the organic coffee brand Gambella, has been condemned for a grievous crime: the murder of his young daughter. The court found him guilty of drowning his nine-year-old in a swamp, revealing a startling bid for vengeance against his former spouse.
The 46-year-old Montreal native faced swift justice on Monday, with the jury convicting him of both second-degree murder and clandestine disposal of a body. The poignant case revolves around Melina, his daughter, whose tragic demise was unraveled last year, as reported by the New York Post.
Frattolin reportedly embarked on a trip during the summer of 2025, whisking Melina across the Northeastern United States. Prosecutors alleged that this excursion concealed a sinister intent—a plot to end his daughter’s life and evade the financial obligations of child support.
The grim discovery of Melina’s remains on July 19, 2025, shocked the serene town of Ticonderoga, New York, where her body lay concealed under a log in a secluded pond.
“Melina’s short life came to a violent end,” the Essex County District Attorney reflected during emotional closing arguments. “Her once tidy, braided hair was caked in mud and grass, a silent testament to the tragedy she endured.”
Frattolin shook his head as the prosecutor spoke and showed no remorse for what had happened to his daughter, the Post reports.
Jurors at the New Jersey courthouse then spent only about an hour deliberating before they handed down their verdict.
Frattolin has maintained that his daughter was mysteriously kidnapped the night of her death.
Luciano Frattolin, 46, the founder of organic coffee brand Gambella, was found guilty on Monday of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse charges
Prosecutors said Frattolin brought his nine-year-old daughter, Melina, on a trip to the United States in a ploy to kill her so he could avoid paying child support
He had called authorities at around 9.30pm on July 19, 2025 from Lake George, New York, claiming Melina was forced into a white van.
Frattolin also said he chased the van for 15 to 20 minutes before he decided to stop in Warren County to make the call.
The report sparked a massive manhunt for Melina, as law enforcement officers stopped white vans throughout the region.
At first, prosecutors said Frattolin cooperated with the investigators by allowing them to search his vehicle and cellphone as well as Melina’s phone.
But Frattolin changed his story as investigators uncovered new evidence in the case.
According to the prosecution, what officers had expected to be a brief drive to the alleged abduction site instead took hours, with Frattolin repeatedly redirecting officers.
At one point, he even allegedly told the cops they traveled too far north on Interstate 87 when they approached Exit 28 – though his cellphone and vehicle data placed Frattolin in the area, where he stayed for nearly an hour.
When he was then questioned about the stop, Frattolin allegedly told investigators that he and Melina had been looking for a place to hike or swim.
The young girl’s remains were then found on July 19, 2025 hidden under a log in a remote pond in the town of Ticonderoga, New York
Investigators also noted that Frattolin told them he had been unable to access his cellphone immediately after the abduction because it had fallen between the seats of his rental car.
Yet prosecutors said there is evidence showing he had texted the girl’s mother, Kali Galanis, that Melina would be home in 10 minutes.
Galanis, though, had already become worried about her daughter.
She had been tracking the young girl through her phone, but after Melina and Frattolin stopped at a McDonald’s in Saratoga Springs earlier in the night, she lost access.
Authorities later discovered that the McDonald’s was the last place the nine-year-old girl’s phone showed any activity.
Video footage from the restaurant also allegedly showed Frattolin wearing different clothes than what he was seen donning after reporting his daughter missing.
Officers later located his wet clothes and shoes in a garbage bag off of I-87.
When the coffee guru was then questioned about Melina’s disappearance, he admitted it ‘would’ve been easier’ to murder the young girl overseas, either in Italy or Ethiopia, New York State Police investigator Daniel Mauro testified during the trial.
Frattolin now faces life in prison. He is due to be sentenced on October 14.

Many drivers find themselves confronting steep hikes in car insurance premiums, often without a clear understanding of the underlying reasons. Insurers, unfortunately, offer minimal transparency regarding the factors driving these costs upward.
In the year leading up to July 2025, car insurance premiums climbed by 8 percent, significantly outpacing the broader consumer price index increase of just 3 percent. This rapid rise adds financial strain for households, even as general inflationary pressures have begun to ease.
Although factors such as elevated repair costs, increased taxes, and a surge in thefts are driving these price hikes, insurance companies have not effectively communicated these reasons to policyholders, according to an ASIC report released on Tuesday.
“Most insurers offered only vague explanations in their supplementary documents and, in some instances, gave no details at all,” said ASIC commissioner Alan Kirkland.
“This lack of clarity leaves customers struggling to comprehend the significant price increases they are experiencing.”
None of the eight insurance brands involved in ASIC’s review, which account for 72 per cent of the market, explained the key factors behind how the premium was calculated or why it had changed since the previous year.
Without being told the reasons for their premium increase, customers were being denied crucial information needed to decide whether to stay with their current insurer or shop around, Kirkland said.
Insurers were also poor at disclosing when customers would be charged more for paying in instalments than for a single annual payment.
ASIC called on insurers to improve renewal and quote documents to make information about premiums clearer, more useful and easier to compare.
A spokesperson for Insurance Council of Australia said the industry recognised the need to support customers in understanding what they are paying and why.
“Premiums have been under pressure across the country due to a range of factors including escalating extreme weather costs, insurance-linked taxes, and rising repair and vehicle parts costs, with motor claims costs up 47 per cent since 2020 and building costs up 44 per cent since 2022,” the spokesperson said.
“This is a highly competitive market, and we encourage every customer to talk to their insurer and shop around at renewal.”
One reason behind the increased cost of vehicle insurance claims was a surge in car thefts in Victoria, where the total car theft bill of $243 million in 2025 was higher than in all the other states combined.

Authorities in Tennessee arrested two men following a report that sparked concerns about the well-being of children residing in their home.
On Friday, 58-year-old Ernest Newbern and 68-year-old Anthony Wiseman were detained after allegedly blocking Department of Children’s Services (DCS) caseworkers from entering their residence. The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office stated that DCS had been alerted to potential child neglect at an address on Canyon Drive, Altamont. According to their report, caseworkers dispatched to the site wanted to interview the adults present.
The caseworkers sought police assistance when a man armed with a firearm allegedly barred their entry, effectively halting their investigation.
Officials reported that two “small children” were safely removed from the premises. The sheriff’s office did not disclose whether the children were taken into DCS custody or describe their condition. Additionally, the incident prompted a “soft lockdown” at a nearby elementary school until authorities declared the situation secure.
Wiseman was charged with resisting arrest; Newbern, who lives in Florida, was charged with child neglect. Online jail records showed that Wiseman was released from jail, but it was not clear if Newbern was also out of custody. Both men are due in Grundy County Circuit Court on Sept. 10.

A woman in Georgia experienced a terrifying ordeal during her Sunday morning workout when a stranger allegedly tried to run her down multiple times just after she had greeted him.
This frightening incident occurred on July 19 at the Sedgefield Apartments in Cobb County. The woman was engaging in her usual exercise routine when she encountered 21-year-old Jesse Allen Davis, as detailed in a criminal warrant obtained by News Media.
Though unfamiliar with Davis, the woman exchanged a “brief, polite greeting” with him, as described in the authorities’ warrant.
Minutes later, Davis allegedly entered his nearby 2004 Nissan Sentra, started the vehicle, and accelerated toward the woman, apparently intending to hit her, according to the warrant’s details.
The progression of this shocking event was halted when another driver intervened by blocking Davis’ path, which prevented him from allegedly injuring the woman.
The woman fled toward her residence, but Davis allegedly pursued her in his vehicle to the area of Commons Lane before intentionally driving toward her a second time.
She was forced to run onto a sidewalk and seek cover behind a dumpster to avoid being struck, according to the warrant.
Jesse Allen Davis was arrested on felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor hit-and-run charges following an alleged July 19 incident in Marietta, Georgia.(Cobb County Sheriff’s Office)
But her alleged attacker kept coming.
While the woman remained hidden, Davis allegedly yelled profanities, maneuvered the vehicle and attempted to strike her a third time before fleeing the area, the warrant states.
“He got into a vehicle, and for whatever reason he attempted to strike her with the vehicle while she was in the parking lot,” Cobb County Police Sgt. Eric Smith told local outlet WSB-TV.
The woman called 911 while taking cover behind the dumpster, according to the outlet.

“He attempted to strike her with the vehicle two additional times,” Smith said.
Davis allegedly struck another vehicle as the incident unfolded, according to a separate criminal warrant obtained by News Media.
The warrant alleges Davis was driving a gray Nissan Sentra when he collided with a gray Ford Fusion and failed to immediately stop or return to the scene.
WSB-TV also reported that Davis eventually crashed into a pole.
Neighbor Lloydethan White said he witnessed part of the chaos and claimed Davis nearly hit him, too.
“When I had seen him, he almost hit my car and her,” White told WSB-TV.
White said he checked on the woman but did not initially realize what she had allegedly just endured.
“I think it’s wrong that a woman has to fear for her life and she’s just trying to go about her normal day and workout,” he said.
Davis was arrested and booked into the Cobb County Jail on felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor hit-and-run charges, with jail records listing a total bonding amount of $5,720.
The motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear. Police have not said whether Davis and the woman had any interaction beyond the seemingly innocuous greeting before he allegedly got behind the wheel.
In a courtroom twist, a model who once graced the pages of Penthouse magazine has turned the tables on her billionaire ex-fiancé as she confronts multiple charges accusing her of swindling wealthy older men.
Adva Lavie’s recorded jail conversations with her ex-husband, Edan Ives, a notable figure in the adult film industry, were unveiled during a mental health diversion hearing in Los Angeles on Monday.
Over the course of ten calls, Lavie and Ives discussed exploiting her billionaire ex-fiancé Stephen Cloobeck’s credit card. The chatter emerged after Cloobeck ended their rapid-fire romance just last month.
Within those conversations, she expressed her willingness to testify against Cloobeck in his legal proceedings. These proceedings are linked to accusations of witness intimidation related to her criminal activities.
Detective Lopez reported Lavie, dressed in a yellow jumpsuit, communicated through “10 calls” with Ives. These calls were laden with affectionate terms and “I love yous,” reflecting her current stance on Cloobeck.
The calls revealed that Cloobeck and Lavie were not on “speaking terms” but that she still had access to his credit card.
Lavie told Ives “to use Cloobeck’s credit card, use the F**** out of it,” and suggested her mom should too, according to Lopez.
When asked by Ives if “Cloobeck would be mad?” Lavie replied “I don’t give and f—” and said she would testify against him in his upcoming case.
The billionaire is facing witness tampering and other felony charges related to Lavie’s case. Cloobeck was in the same courthouse Friday where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The Post has learned the billionaire is no longer paying for Advie’s defense. Those familiar with the matter say when it comes to legal fees, Lavie is “on her own,” despite being surrounded Monday by high profile attorneys Lou Shaipiro, Jeffrey Rubenstein, and Jeremy Lessem.
Lessem argued Lavie should be released from jail and put into a rehab facility, which the defense has hand picked and Lavie has been accepted into.
“It’s in the mountains of Orange County, no cell phones allowed, a six months program addressing mental health and substance abuse,” Lessem told the court.
Ives and Lavie were officially divorced in March. The two had “an open relationship” according to Ives and made x-rated content.
In her diversion motion, filed last month, Lavie claimed that Ives had physically and sexually abused her.
“She tells how abusive he is, he slaps her, mocks her. Yet she is calling him at least 10 times. She has a loving relationship with him not an estranged one,” prosecutors said.
Lavie is facing 11 years behind bars, and a decision on diversion is expected Monday afternoon.

‘The strange thing is I don’t identify with Scully in the same way I do with other characters that I played for much less time,’ Anderson told the LA Times last Thursday.
‘Part of that is because of how square she was. I have such an intrinsically rebellious nature. I can, obviously, play square, but I think because of that, she didn’t necessarily get her hooks inside me in the way that some of these other characters that really push against the establishment did.’

ELIZABETHTOWN, NY – In a chilling verdict, Canadian father Luciano Frattolin was declared guilty on Monday of drowning his 9-year-old daughter in a swamp in the Adirondacks. Prosecutors argued the macabre act was spurred by his desire for vengeance against his former wife.
The jury in Elizabethtown swiftly delivered their verdict against the disgraced coffee entrepreneur. Frattolin’s heinous crime involved the murder of his young daughter, Melina, followed by the disposal of her body near Ticonderoga during what was supposed to be a court-sanctioned vacation in July 2025. He fabricated an audacious story, alleging that Melina had been kidnapped, which ignited an extensive search throughout the Adirondacks.
Frattolin now stands to serve a life sentence, having been convicted of second-degree murder and the concealment of a corpse, after a trial filled with gripping testimonies in Essex County Court.
“Tragically, Melina’s life was cut short in a brutal act of violence,” remarked Essex County District Attorney Michael Langey during his closing arguments on Monday. He fixed a steely gaze on Frattolin in court, prompting the convicted father to look away.
Langey painted a haunting picture of the crime scene describing, “Her once neatly braided long black hair was found disheveled with mud, dirt, and grass clinging to it.”
Frattolin shook his head, at no point showing remorse for drowning the girl and then trying to cover up her body with a large rock.
The twisted dad had even considered taking the stand, but revealed Monday morning he’d begrudgingly decided not to.
“I really want to, but I was advised not to,” he told Judge Tatiana Coffinger of his decision not to testify. Jurors deliberated for only about an hour before handing down their verdict.
Melina’s mom, Kali Galanis, had full custody over her after she broke off she and Frattolin’s long distance relationship in 2019.
In recent years, Kali had permitted Melina to see Luciano on yearly trips, such as one planned to Ethiopia last year until something prompted the Montreal-based Mom to cancel the plans, allowing them to take a trip to New York City instead.
Twisted, rambling notes Luciano left in his rented Prius the night he killed Melina spoke of “ending the madness” and a “Luciano Frattolin 2.0,” who was with a “10/10 blonde” and bought a Porsche. “Let God decide. If you want to become famous. God, do not give me money until I end this evil. I mean big money, like two million,” he wrote in a note.
“Don’t let Melina suffer anymore,” he wrote in another.
Frattolin, a dual citizen of Ethiopia and Italy, had accused his ex-wife Kali Galanis of abusing the girl — then alleged she was framing him in Melina’s purported kidnapping.
“If she is behind this, she does this to make me look like a bad person,” Frattolin can be heard saying on a recording with investigators.
Jurors ultimately sided with prosecutors in finding that Frattolin’s narrative kept changing.

Experiencing back pain after 60? Incorporate these four standing exercises into your routine for just ten minutes a day.
>
Among adults over 60, back pain often originates from places other than the back. Prolonged sitting can lead to shortened hip flexors, which exert pressure on the lower back with each step. Additionally, weakened glutes force the back to undertake tasks it wasn’t designed for. With over 40 years as a personal trainer and more than 25 years leading TRAINFITNESS, the UK’s premier provider of personal training courses, I’ve seen firsthand how four daily standing exercises can make a significant difference in less than a month.
Where Back Pain Starts
Shutterstock
A pattern emerges quite clearly: back pain in individuals over 60 often begins outside the back. Years of sitting cause the hip flexors to pull on the pelvis, tilting it forward and creating a hollow in the lower back. This hollow squeezes the spinal discs, which the body perceives as pain.
The glutes are the other half of the story. After enough hours of sitting on them, the brain stops recruiting them, and the lower back muscles pick up the slack. Every time you stand up, walk, or lift something, the back is doing work the glutes should be doing. Over months and years, this fatigues the back muscles and leaves them constantly aching.
There’s also the thoracic spine, the middle section of the back between the shoulder blades. This is the part that has stiffened the most from sitting, and when it can’t rotate or extend, the lower back tries to compensate by moving further than it should. Loose upper back, happy lower back.
Underneath all of that is the loss of the deep muscles that hold the spine steady while the body moves. These fade without any warning after 50, and without them, every reach, twist, and lift lands on the passive structures of the spine rather than being held by muscle.
If You Can Hold a Bridge This Long After 65, Your Core Strength Is Top-Tier
Why Standing Exercises Work
Shutterstock
Standing is where most people actually hurt their backs. You bend to pick up a shoe. You reach for something on a high shelf. You turn to grab a mug on the worktop. All of these are standing movements, and the body needs training in the position it’s going to be tested in.
Standing exercises also load the spine with a good amount of the body’s own weight, which is what tells the muscles they need to work. Floor exercises take gravity out of the equation, which is useful for some things, but not for teaching the standing patterns that matter in daily life.
There’s also the practical side. Standing exercises need no equipment, no floor space beyond an arm’s length, no getting down and up off the floor. This is a routine that fits into the middle of the day, between the kettle boiling and the tea being ready. That’s the level of friction that makes it happen every day.
Standing Hip Hinge
This teaches the body to bend at the hips rather than at the lower back, which is the single most protective movement pattern for the spine. Every time you pick something up off the floor, this is the pattern that should be firing. Grooving it standing, with no load, sets the body up to do it correctly under load.
How to Do It:
Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, soft bend in the knees
Place your hands on the front of your thighs
Push the hips backward, sliding the hands down the thighs towards the knees
Keep the chest tall and the spine long
Stop when you feel a steady stretch in the hamstrings
Squeeze the glutes and stand back up
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t round your lower back to reach further down. Keep the spine long throughout. If you can only get your hands halfway down the thighs before the back wants to round, that’s your range for now, and it will get further within weeks.
Sets and Reps: 12 to 15 reps.
If You Can Hold a Wall Sit This Long After 60, Your Leg Strength Is Top-Tier
Standing Single-Leg Hip Extension
This wakes up the glutes, which is what stops the lower back from doing double duty. Strong glutes are the single biggest predictor of a pain-free back in this age group, and this move loads them directly in a way that spares the spine.
How to Do It:
Stand behind a sturdy chair, both hands lightly on the back
Stand tall with a soft bend in the supporting knee
Keeping the working leg straight, sweep it backward, squeezing the glute at the top
Only go as far as you can without arching the lower back
Lower with control
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t arch your lower back to swing the leg further behind you. The range is small, and the squeeze is everything. Two inches with a strong glute squeeze beats a foot with the back doing the work.
Sets and Reps: 10 reps on one side, then swap.
Standing Thoracic Rotation
This frees up the middle of the back, the part that has stiffened most from sitting. When the upper back can rotate, the lower back is spared from having to. This is one of the most useful moves for anyone whose back aches after a long car journey or a day at a desk.
How to Do It:
Stand tall, feet hip-width apart
Clasp your hands together at chest height, elbows out to the sides
Rotate slowly to the right, leading with the chest, not the head
Feel the twist happening in the middle of the back, not the lower back or the neck
Return to center
Rotate to the left
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t swing your hips as you rotate. It takes the work out of the mid-back. Keep the hips facing forward and let only the ribs turn.
Sets and Reps: 10 rotations per side
Form Tip: If it feels like a much smaller movement than you thought, that’s correct.

Standing March With Reach
This trains the deep muscles of the trunk that hold the spine steady while the arms and legs move. It’s exactly the muscle pattern that protects the back in daily life, when you’re carrying a bag or reaching across the body for something.
How to Do It:
Stand tall with feet hip-width apart
Lift the right knee to hip height while reaching the left arm straight overhead
Keep the trunk tall and steady, not wobbling side to side
Lower and swap sides
Avoid These Mistakes:
Don’t rush the movement, or it becomes a march rather than a control exercise. Slow it right down.
Sets and Reps: 20 reps total, 10 each side
Form Tip: The value is in the trunk holding steady while the limbs move, not in getting the knees high.
How Often to Do This

The four exercises take about 10 minutes done back to back. Do them once a day, ideally at the same time each day so they become routine rather than a decision.
Six or seven days a week is what I recommend. The loading is light enough that the body handles daily work without any risk of overtraining. Missing a day is fine, but the pattern needs to become a habit before it starts to change how your back feels.
The best time is usually in the morning, before the day has a chance to stiffen you up. But any time works. Some clients do them during a mid-morning tea break, others do them right before dinner. Whatever slot you can hold reliably is the right one.
After the first month, add a second round of each exercise. Or slow the tempo on the hip hinge and hip extension to double the training stimulus. The exercises stay the same. The dose gets bigger.

What to Expect

Within the first fortnight, most people notice their back is grumbling less at the end of the day. That’s the glutes starting to fire and share the load, which takes the pressure off the muscles that have been overworking.
By 4 weeks, the change is real. Long walks feel easier. Standing at the sink to do the washing up stops being uncomfortable. Getting out of the car after a long journey isn’t the ordeal it was.
By 6 to 8 weeks, most people report that the constant background ache has stopped. Not always completely, but enough that they’ve stopped thinking about their back multiple times a day. This is the point where they realize they’ve been in low-grade pain for years without knowing it.
Long-term, the routine is what keeps the back working properly for the rest of your life. Ten minutes a day is small change for the difference between a back that lets you live your life and one that dictates it.
