Over 800,000 Muslims in Australia, celebrated Eid.
For many Muslims this Eid feels different, as the Middle East, is under the shadow of a war.
For Minal Tanvir and her sister in Western Sydney, the celebration of Eid, one of the most significant Islamic festivities, begins with a warm embrace from their father, the thrill of receiving “Eidie”—a traditional cash gift—and the heartfelt exchange of “Eid Mubarak” with their parents.
This year, Thursday and Friday marked the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, a celebration that signifies the conclusion of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting from sunrise to sunset, and Eid al-Fitr is joyously observed over three days.
In Australia, more than 800,000 Muslims, including Minal Tanvil, a second-generation Australian of Pakistani descent, and her sister, celebrated the festival in diverse ways.
“It’s quite strange because after a month of fasting, it feels odd to eat on this day, almost like you should still be fasting,” the 24-year-old shared with SBS News.
“Eating that morning feels distinctly different, but it’s a delightful experience. Usually, we enjoy a delicious curry with fresh naan. Afterward, we head to the mosque for Eid prayers as a family, which is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other Muslims in the community and see the joy among the children,” she added.
‘Anxious’
But for many Muslims around the world, this Eid feels different, as the Middle East, which is home to 20 per cent of Muslims, is under the shadow of a war which started on 28 February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
The war has reached various areas in the region, with Iran launching strikes at other countries in the region.
Bilal El-Hayek, the mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown, the most concentrated Muslim population in the country, said that while Eid is a “wonderful day”, the war has made it “challenging” for the community.
“It’s been a tough time. People are feeling very tired, people are feeling very anxious, people are worried for their family and loved ones overseas as well,” he told SBS News.
“We pray for peace in the Middle East.”
Almost 30 individuals have lost their lives in the Persian Gulf countries since the onset of the war. In Kuwait, officials have imposed a temporary ban on plays, concerts, and weddings during Eid al-Fitr to reduce large gatherings.
Lebanon, a country with over 3 million Muslims, has also been heavily targeted since 2 March, after Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, launched six missiles into Israel, the group’s first missile attack on Israel since signing a fragile ceasefire agreement in November 2024.
Israel has attacked various regions in Lebanon in recent weeks, killing 968 people, including 111 children, according to the Lebanese health ministry and forcing over a million people to be displaced.
‘A message of peace and love’
Gamel Kheir, secretary of the Lebanese Muslim Association, said Eid is now relevant “more than ever” as “it sends a message of peace and love to the world, which is needed.”
“Eid is a time for celebrating humanity and getting together. Sadly, we’re facing an atrocity happening in our homelands. If ever there was a time when community bonds were needed, it is times like Easter, Eid and Christmas,” he told SBS News.
“These are times where we should all be celebrating together as a society.
“You can’t celebrate rightfully while your brothers and sisters are facing an atrocity now in Lebanon.”
Israel’s army forces have stated that they are focusing on Hezbollah facilities, describing the ground operation they have initiated in Lebanon as a defensive measure aimed at safeguarding northern Israel from Hezbollah aggression.
Kheir also asked the Australian government to take action, saying the country “has an obligation under human rights and international law to step in and ensure the safety of all our brothers and sisters in the Middle East”.
On Saturday, the Labor government announced it will allocate an extra $5 million for lifesaving aid to civilians impacted by the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable populations, especially women and children.
The humanitarian assistance will be delivered by the World Food Programme and the United Nations Children’s Fund, and it brings Australia’s humanitarian assistance for civilians affected by the conflict in Gaza and Lebanon to over $135 million since October 2023.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned Hezbollah’s strikes on Israel and “dragging Lebanon into conflict”, warning “a major Israeli ground offensive into Lebanon will only exacerbate the worsening humanitarian situation in the country”.
“We know this is a distressing time for Australians in Lebanon and for the Australian-Lebanese community here at home thinking of their family members and loved ones,” she said
“We are gravely concerned by the expansion of the conflict into Lebanon, the loss of life and the displacement of more than one million civilians.”
‘Eid is gone’
For those on the ground in Lebanon looking for a shelter from the war, previous Eid memories now feel like a different lifetime.
“Our circumstances used to be different. [We were] at home, my children had new clothes for the Eid … There is a huge difference between being at home and being in a tent or, rather, in a bus,” Samah Hjola, a Lebanese mother of two sheltering under a tarp hung between two minivans, told Reuters.
In Beirut, at a school that had been turned into a shelter for the displaced, a band performed in front of dozens of children — but for some, this didn’t change the mood.
“There’s no Eid, you can’t mention Eid,” Abed Nasser, a 53-year-old displaced man, told Reuters
“Eid is gone for us, and everything called a good life is gone. We live in sorrow for those who are gone. We live in tragedy, seeing the displaced unable to get by.”

In the southern Lebanese city of Sidon, families paid their respects by visiting the graves of their loved ones, which is a tradition associated with Eid.
“Honestly, there’s a heaviness in people’s hearts. The joy is incomplete,” Suleiman Youssef from Sidon told Reuters.
“I think people need joy, they need happiness. People want to be happy. This country needs safety and stability. We all hope the coming days will be better, and that the war will end as soon as possible.”

A group of former employees from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has filed a lawsuit in federal court, claiming that the Trump administration’s decision to replace seasoned workers with younger, administration-approved staff was an act of unlawful age discrimination.
The lawsuit, which spans 124 pages, includes nearly 80 pages listing the names of the displaced foreign service workers. These individuals, aged between their 40s and 60s, were allegedly targeted due to their age.
The suit was brought against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the State Department, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was the acting administrator of USAID from February to August 2025, when Elon Musk took his chainsaw to an agency he called “criminal,” declaring it was time “for it to die.” Amy Gleason, the acting DOGE administrator now, was also sued.
The complaint accuses the Trump administration of dismantling USAID by removing staff with “decades of institutional knowledge and expertise.” The suit claims this was done under the pretense of eliminating “dinosaurs” to make way for “younger, more energetic, more tech-savvy” personnel.
The lawsuit highlights the role of a 19-year-old employee, nicknamed “Big Balls,” who was allegedly involved in the dismissals, underscoring the administration’s preference for younger staff.
The complaint states, “Defendants openly labeled federal workers as ‘dinosaurs,’ implying they were outdated and on the brink of extinction due to changing environments. The motivations of the discriminatory actors were clear, as they showed disdain for older workers. It was particularly demoralizing for these experienced employees to witness a 19-year-old employee, dubbed ‘Big Balls,’ play a significant role in their termination, with this behavior being publicly endorsed by the Defendants.”
But the tone was set from the top, with President Donald Trump praising DOGE and Musk because he “attracts a young, very smart type of person,” the complaint further alleged.
“As the Defendants’ derogatory language towards older workers reverberated, other high-ranking officials adopted and endorsed the same age-based messaging to justify the terminations at USAID,” the filing said. “Sources close to the administration boldly stated that: ‘[t]his is a Gen Z, millennial takeover of the federal government,’ adding that DOGE, by conducting mass firings, was addressing ‘the geriatric, the kind of nursing home regime that has been pushing the country into oblivion. Now the young guns are taking over the country for the better.’”
The problem with the administration’s “messaging campaign to convince the public to put [a] premium on the youth and vigor of the officials behind the terminations, as juxtaposed to the claimed age-related lethargy of the employees they were terminating” is that it revealed the “unlawful attack” for what it was, “evidence of direct and intentional age discrimination” under the guise of reducing the deficit, the plaintiffs claimed.
“As part of this age-related truncation of workers, the persons responsible routinely peddled in code words indicative of age discrimination, including transition towards a more tech-savvy federal workforce, closely associated with youth. In fact, some of the decision making in terminating these employees appear to have been carried out by neophytes to federal service in their twenties,” the lawsuit continued. “The messaging and conduct employed was intended to, and did, create intolerable working conditions for older workers, replete with specific efforts to force them into resignation or early retirement.”
Worse yet, the plaintiffs alleged, they were lied to when they were told their “positions were not being retained.” Rather, they were or are being replaced by “younger cheaper counterparts.”
“[T]he Defendants have sought, and continue to seek, new, younger employees to conduct the same or similar functions as Plaintiffs,” the complaint stated. “This has been done at the Department of State through a discriminatory job screening pattern and practice, that disproportionately disqualifies older employees and is intended to exclude Plaintiffs from returning to work for the federal government. The Department of State’s ongoing recruitment for the same and similar positions from which Plaintiffs were terminated solidifies the pretextual nature of the [reductions in force, or RIF] that upended Plaintiffs’ lives and unlawfully destroyed their retirement plans and benefits. It is a ruse to replace older established workers with greater salary and benefits with younger cheaper counterparts.”
As a result, the civil lawsuit brought seven counts against the administration, several of them alleging violations of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. The last count claimed the government violated the Administrative Procedure Act because it knew most of the workers it fired were 40 or older and yet “failed to assess the adverse impact of an abrupt, arbitrary, and pretextual RIF on this older workforce and failed to take any meaningful steps to mitigate the harmful impact of the RIF on older workers.”
Shia LaBeouf has once again captured attention with his unusual behavior, this time in Rome.
TMZ released a video on Saturday showing the “Transformers” actor, who was in the Italian capital to attend the baptism of his father, Jeffrey LaBeouf. The footage, taken earlier in the week, shows LaBeouf dressed casually in a black T-shirt and blue pants, relaxing at an outdoor café.

In subsequent footage, the “Even Stevens” alum is seen pacing on the sidewalks and again screaming, though it’s unclear who — or what — he’s screaming at.
A rep for LaBeouf did not immediately return Page Six’s request for comment on Saturday.
The new footage comes amid a seemingly difficult time for Shia, who was also spotted in Italy asking a woman for a light in a hotel lobby while wearing nothing but boxers.
On Friday in the early morning hours, he was seen on video having a tense exchange with authorities outside his New Orleans home, during which he called himself a “target” and sobbed uncontrollably.
“I don’t trust you at all!” he shouted to cops at the scene.
The “Honey Boy” star was arrested last month for his involvement in a bar fight in New Orleans, with footage showing his fight with multiple people.
LaBeouf allegedly head butted one of the men, and a police report claimed he may have dislocated one of the participants’ noses.
He was charged with two counts of simple battery in the Mardi Gras altercation, and almost immediately after being released from jail, returned to the streets for more partying.
The former child actor was ultimately ordered to pay a $100,000 bond, attend rehab, and undergo a drug testing program.
LaBeouf moved to New Orleans last year after quietly splitting from estranged wife Mia Goth, a source exclusively told Page Six.
The actor is a father of one daughter, Isabel, whom he welcomed with the “Frankenstein” actress in March 2022.
President Donald Trump has threatened to send ICE officers into USairports by the start of next week as a funding stoush paralyses the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The ongoing partial government shutdown has resulted in staffing shortages at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which oversees airport security across the United States.
These shortages have caused delays at airports, and with no immediate resolution in sight between Democrats and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), former President Trump has suggested deploying federal agents to address the issue.

“If the Democrats do not allow for Just and Proper Security at our Airports, and elsewhere throughout our Country, ICE will do the job far better than ever done before!” Trump declared in a recent post on Truth Social.
Trump indicated his readiness for immediate action, stating, “Likewise, I look forward to moving ICE in on Monday, and have already told them to, ‘GET READY.’ NO MORE WAITING, NO MORE GAMES!”
The post was accompanied by a black-and-white photograph of Trump, with the bolded caption “No Games!” prominently displayed at the top.
Trump’s posts did not offer detail on how ICE would take a role in airport security and what it meant for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which screens passengers and luggage for hazardous items.

Call-out rates have started to increase at some airports, and DHS said at least 376 have quit since the partial shutdown began on February 14.
The move appears to be a pointed effort to expand the type of immigration enforcement that has become a sticking point in Congress.
Democrats are asking for better identification for federal law enforcement officers, a new code of conduct for those agencies and more use of judicial warrants, among other measures.
The Minnesota operation was tied in part to allegations of fraud involving Somali residents.
On Saturday, Trump said ICE officers sent to airports would focus on arresting immigrants from Somalia who are in the US illegally. Repeating his criticism on Somalis, he said they “totally destroyed” Minnesota.

On Saturday, the Senate rejected a motion by Democrats to take up legislation to reopen TSA and pay workers who are now going without paychecks.
Republicans argue that they need to fund all parts of the DHS, not just certain ones. A bill to fund the Cabinet department failed to advance in the Senate on Friday.
There were signs of progress, though, with the restarting in recent days of stalled talks between Democrats and the White House.
On Saturday, Republican and Democratic senators were set to meet for a third consecutive day with White House officials behind closed doors as Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York spoke of “productive conversations”.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, urged the bipartisan group to act quickly. He has said repeatedly that Democrats and the White House need to find a compromise as lines at airports have grown.
“If that group that’s meeting can’t come up with a solution really quickly, things are going to get worse and worse,” Thune said.

A 25-year-old individual has been apprehended in relation to the fatal shooting of a Loyola University Chicago student, which occurred near the campus on Thursday. The suspect, described by sources as a migrant from Venezuela, was detained following the tragic incident, as detailed by the Chicago Tribune.
The arrest report, obtained by the Tribune, refrains from identifying the suspect by name. However, Fox News sources have confirmed his background. The victim, 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman from Westchester County, New York, was shot while enjoying a late-night walk with friends along Chicago’s lakefront.
Gorman, captured in a photo smiling against the backdrop of the Chicago skyline, met a tragic end when a masked gunman allegedly confronted her group. According to the Chicago Police Department, the assailant brandished a firearm and shot Gorman in the head, resulting in her immediate death at the scene.

The gunman allegedly approached the group, pulled out a gun, and opened fire — striking Gorman in the head, according to the Chicago Police Department. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries were reported, according to police.
Records obtained by the Tribune state the suspect was identified minutes after the shooting due to his “distinct limp.”

A tech billionaire has embarked on an unexpected journey to secure Nancy Pelosi’s esteemed congressional seat. However, the crowded primary has posed significant challenges as he reportedly struggles to connect with voters.
At 40, Saikat Chakrabarti initially decided to challenge the former House Speaker, but his plans shifted when Pelosi announced last November that she would not be pursuing re-election.
Chakrabarti is now up against two opponents, both with established careers in San Francisco’s local political scene, vying for the now-open seat.
Adding to the intrigue, Chakrabarti stirred controversy by securing an endorsement from renowned drag queen Peaches earlier this week.

The endorsement received some backlash online, with commenters accusing Chakrabarti of not focusing on the issues at hand affecting locals in the Bay Area.

The San Francisco Chronicle observed Chakrabarti and his challengers, City Supervisor Connie Chan and State Senator Scott Weiner, last week.
The Chronicle noted that both Chan and Chakrabarti frequently came across voters who brought up Weiner.
‘You got tough competition in this neighborhood. Scott Wiener is pretty well liked and was responsive as a supervisor,’ one voter reportedly told Chakrabarti.
‘Chakrabarti may be chummy with the nation’s leading progressives, but relatively few San Francisco voters know him,’ the Chronicle observed.

The Chronicle also noted that Chakrabarti encountered several voters who said they would vote for Wiener because they knew him personally.
Another voter said they appreciated Chakrabarti’s experience but were ‘uncomfortable’ voting for him since he spent time away from San Francisco.
Unlike his challengers, Chakrabarti lacks political experience in the city he is running to represent.
He became a tech millionaire for his work as a software engineer at the payment processing company, Stripe.
Chakrabarti then pivoted from technology to politics, working on Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign and serving as chief of staff to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Wiener capitalized on Chakrabarti’s wealth and inexperience in San Francisco, launching an attack ad criticizing him for using his money to fund his campaign while touting that he does not take corporate funds.
‘My opponent is using his vast personal wealth to try to buy a seat in Congress. I’m not worth hundreds of millions like he is, but what I do have is decades of real experience delivering for San Francisco,’ Weiner wrote on social media earlier this month.
‘Being hyper-rich can buy you a lot of things, but it shouldn’t be able to buy you an election.’

‘Agree peaches! Saikat isn’t a billionaires puppet like some of the other contenders running for the seat,’ another added.

Produced by Guy Ritchie, the first series of the Paramount+ show was seen by 26 million viewers.
The second season is set to expand into a ‘darker, more ruthless’ storyline involving European gun and drug smuggling routes.
Some filming has already reportedly taken place in Spain, and most of the cast are returning including Paddy Considine, Downton’s Joanne Froggatt and Anson Boon.
Brosnan and Mirren have been friends since filming 2025’s cosy mystery The Thursday Murder Club for Netflix.
Mirren previously described working with Brosnan as a ‘lovely experience,’ noting they share a similar work ethic where they take the job seriously but ‘carry the load lightly’.
She highlighted their shared roots in street theatre as the source of an immediate ‘synchronicity’ that made their partnership on MobLand feel effortless. Brosnan echoed this sentiment, describing Mirren as ‘a great lady with true soul, a real person and just a joy to behold’.
Heidi Klum and her son, Henry Samuel, took center stage at the New York City premiere of “Project Hail Mary” on Wednesday night.
The duo radiated joy as they posed on the black carpet before settling in to enjoy the science fiction film. Klum dazzled in a chic white ensemble complemented by silver heels, while Samuel sported a stylish beige suit with a leopard print shirt and a coordinating scarf.

This outing marks another step into the fashion world for Samuel. Earlier this year, the 20-year-old made his runway debut at Lena Erziak’s Haute Couture show during Paris Fashion Week and subsequently signed with Next Management.
“Having grown up surrounded by fashion and entertainment, entering this realm myself is an entirely new adventure. I’m thankful to Next Management for this chance and eager to learn, develop, and carve out my own path in the industry,” Henry expressed in a press release.

The young model has since walked in multiple runway shows and appeared in several magazines, including HUNGER. In December 2025, he and Klum appeared together on the cover of Elle Germany.
He also appeared with his mom and sister Leni in the two-part series On and Off the Catwalk, which premiered February 22 and March 1 on ProSieben and Joyn. The series follows Klum at work and introduces Henry and Leni as they begin modeling.

In an interview with Paper magazine, Henry said his mom helped shape his interest in modeling.
“We would always visit her on her set days. And we all were just super interested. She just looked like she was having fun on her sets. And I just wanted that feeling as well,” he said.
Klum shares Leni, 20, Henry, 20, Johan, 19, and Lou, 16, with her ex-husband Seal.

In video obtained by TMZ, police were seen speaking with LaBeouf on his porch in what appeared to be a rather measured conversation until it devolved into chaos.
Not all of the conversation’s audio could be picked up and it’s unclear why exactly the police had visited LaBeouf at his home.
‘I’m a target,’ he was shown telling cops at one point. ‘I’m a target. I’m an easy target.’
Eventually the conversation took a turn as LaBeouf lifted up his shirt, sobbed, and headed inside his house.
‘I have a f**king three-year-old!’ he was heard crying.
His recent arrest was weighing on him as well as he cries about ‘sitting in jail for [expletive] four months for punch one man,’ TMZ reported.
‘I don’t trust you at all. I don’t trust you at all!’ he said.
An emotional LaBeouf eventually moved from the porch and onto the middle of the street, where he screamed: ‘It’s why I never call you!’

The latest interaction with police took place one month after his arrest in New Orleans following a bar brawl.
According to the New Orleans Police Department incident report, officers were dispatched to R Bar on Royal Street at approximately 12:45 a.m. on February 17 in response to a reported simple battery involving a man who was allegedly ‘causing a disturbance and becoming increasingly aggressive.’
In the narrative section of the report, officers wrote that they were informed ‘a white male subject was aggressive and struck multiple people’ inside the bar.
It was claimed the actor yelled: ‘These f****ts put me in jail. I’m a Catholic.’
Judge Levine slammed LaBeouf for his alleged use of the slur against a ‘marginalized community’ that has faced so much ‘terror’ already.
Jeffrey Damnit, who was involved in the altercation, has called LaBeouf’s release ‘ridiculous’ and called for him to be charged with a hate crime.
