Suspect in Long Island’s Gilgo Beach Serial Killings Charged with Death of Fourth Woman

0

A New York architect charged in a string of slayings known as the Gilgo Beach killings was accused Tuesday in the death of a fourth woman, a Connecticut mother of two who vanished in 2007 and whose remains were found more than three years later along a coastal highway on Long Island.

Rex Heuermann was formally charged in the killing of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, months after having been labeled the prime suspect in her death when he was arrested in July in the deaths of three other women.

Wearing a dark suit, he remained silent in court as his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. He will continue to be held without bail until his next court date on February 6.

Police say the breakthrough came from DNA extracted from hair at the scene. A hair found with Brainard-Barnes’ remains is genetically similar to a DNA sample taken from Heuermann’s ex-wife. During the period when Brainard-Barnes disappeared in 2007, Heuermann’s ex-wife and his daughter were staying out of town at a hotel in Atlantic City, the indictment and her attorney confirmed.

Prosecutors also said in Tuesday’s court filing that Heuermann feared getting caught in the months leading up to his arrest.

He obtained data wiping software in an attempt to destroy evidence on his laptops, phones and other electronic devices, they said. Investigators seized hundreds of devices during their lengthy search of Heuermann’s home that prosecutors say contained troves of bondage and torture pornography.

Heuermann also scoured the internet for phrases that suggested he was afraid of getting caught, including “How does cell site analysis work,” “Gilgo news,” “How cell phone tracking is increasingly being used to solve crimes,” and phrases with the term “Long Island Serial Killer.”

Heuermann’s attorney, Michael Brown, said afterward that his client has maintained his innocence from “day one” and looked forward to defending himself in court.

He also called into question some of the evidence touted by prosecutors Tuesday, suggesting new DNA analysis connecting Heuermann to the killing was “problematic” since it was being introduced some 13 years after Brainard-Barnes’ body was discovered.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in response that more sophisticated DNA testing had allowed investigators to more conclusively determine the hairs found with Brainard-Barnes belonged to Heuermann’s ex-wife and daughter.

He also said the indictment marks the end of the investigation into the so-called “Gilgo four” victims and provides “some small measure of closure” for their families.

Prosecutors now turn their attention to prosecuting those cases and investigating other bodies found nearby, Tierney added.

Brainard-Barnes left her hometown of Norwich, Connecticut, on July 9, 2007, and headed to Manhattan for sex work, with plans to return the following day, according to friends who became concerned when she uncharacteristically stopped using her phone.

But the 25-year-old never came back.

Nicolette Brainard-Barnes said she was only 7 years old when her mother, who was once employed as a dealer at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, vanished.

“I remember she read to me every night,” the now 24-year-old said, surrounded by other family members following Tuesday’s court hearing. “Now I can no longer remember the sound of her voice.”

Maureen Brainard-Barnes’ sister, Melissa Cann, remembered her as a “loving mother and giving friend” who would “never get the chance to show the world how talented she was.”

“Maureen was more than how she has been portrayed,” the 39-year-old said through tears.

Heuermann was arrested July 14 and charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello, three women who authorities say also were sex workers. Heuermann’s lawyer said he has denied committing the crimes. He previously pleaded not guilty to killing Barthelemy, Waterman and Costello.

Brainard-Barnes was the first of the four women to disappear. Their remains were found along the same quarter-mile (400-meter) stretch of parkway in the Gilgo Beach area of Jones Beach Island in 2010. Additional searching turned up the remains of six more adults and a toddler who was the child of one of the victims.

Investigators also found electronic evidence that Heuermann had accessed Costello’s prostitution advertisement Sept. 1, 2010, according to court documents.

Police concluded that an 11th person found dead in a tidal marsh on the same barrier island accidentally drowned.

Investigators have said Heuermann, who lived in Massapequa Park across the bay from where the bodies were found, was probably not responsible for all the deaths. Some of the victims disappeared in the mid 1990s.

Investigators zeroed in on Heuermann when a new task force ran an old tip about a Chevy Avalanche pickup through a vehicle records database. A hit came back identifying one of those make and models belonging to Heuermann, who lived in a neighborhood police had been focusing on because of cellphone location data and call records, authorities said.

With the tip breathing new life into the investigation, authorities charted the calls and travels of multiple cellphones, picked apart email aliases, delved into search histories and collected discarded bottles — and even a pizza crust — for advanced DNA testing, according to court papers. Detectives said Heuermann’s DNA on the pizza crust matched a hair found on a restraint used in the killings.

Last summer, Heuermann’s ex-wife, stepson and daughter agreed to give DNA samples to prosecutors, according to court documents. Investigators compared them against DNA collected from bottles sipped by Heuermann and tossed into trashcans near his home.

Police said other evidence linked Heuermann to the victims, including burner cellphones used to arrange meetings with the slain women.

After the arrest, investigators spent nearly two weeks combing through Heuermann’s home, including digging up the yard, dismantling a porch and a greenhouse and removing many contents of the house for testing.

A documentary unveils the gripping real-life narrative of Denise Huskins and her abduction. Learn about the case details and her personal life.

Denise Huskins is a physical therapist and a survivor of a horrific kidnapping that made headlines around the world in 2015.

She was abducted from her home in Vallejo, California, by a masked intruder who demanded a ransom from her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn.

The kidnapper, later identified as Matthew Muller tortured and raped Huskins for 48 hours before releasing her in her hometown of Huntington Beach, California.

However, instead of being treated as a victim, Huskins was accused by the Vallejo police of staging a hoax inspired by the movie “Gone Girl”.

Huskins and Quinn had to fight to clear their names and seek justice against Muller and the police who slandered them.

Here is everything you need to know about Denise Huskins’s life, age, partner, and net worth.

Denise Huskins Wikipedia & Age: Who Is She?

Denise Huskins was born on February 17, 1987, in Huntington Beach, California. She is 36 years old as of January 2024.

She then pursued a doctorate in physical therapy from Chapman University and graduated in 2012. She moved to Vallejo, California, in 2014 and worked as a physical therapist at Kaiser Permanente.

In 2015, Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, both physical therapists, experienced a traumatic kidnapping.

Awakened by an intruder in a scuba suit demanding ransom, they were bound, blindfolded, and threatened. The kidnapper, Matthew Muller, took Huskins, warning Quinn not to involve the police.

Quinn, contacting the FBI through his brother’s advice, faced disbelief and suspicion from the Vallejo police, who accused him of orchestrating a hoax.

Meanwhile, Muller held Huskins captive, subjecting her to repeated assault and threats.

Upon her release, Muller sent an email claiming a criminal group’s involvement, apologizing for the ordeal, but the police dismissed it.

The couple, dubbed the “real-life Gone Girl,” endured police accusations, media scrutiny, and public ridicule.

Despite passing a polygraph test, they faced challenges to prove their innocence, cooperating with the FBI and hiring lawyers to counter the false accusations and address the traumatic aftermath of their harrowing experience.

Denise Huskins Partner: Who Is She Married To?

Huskins and Quinn have been through a lot together since their kidnapping ordeal. They suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression and insomnia.

They also faced legal battles against Muller and the Vallejo police. They underwent therapy and counseling to heal from their trauma and rebuild their trust.

They also found joy in each other’s company and support. They celebrated their love by getting engaged in November 2016 at Disneyland.

They welcomed their daughter, Olivia Quinn Huskins, on March 25, 2020, exactly five years after Huskins was released by Muller.

They said that their daughter filled the hole in their hearts that was left by their trauma. Huskins and Quinn currently live in Huntington Beach, California, with their daughter and their dog, Stitch.

Denise Huskins’s net worth is estimated to be around $1 million as of January 2024. She earns her income from her career as a physical therapist and from her book sales.

She also received a settlement from the Vallejo police for their defamation of her character.

In 2016, Huskins and Quinn filed a lawsuit against the Vallejo police for violating their civil rights, inflicting emotional distress, and making false statements about them.

They accused the police of mishandling their case, ignoring evidence, refusing to apologize, and causing them harm. They sought $15 million in damages.

In 2018, the Vallejo police agreed to settle the lawsuit for $2.5 million. They also issued a public apology to Huskins and Quinn and admitted that they were victims of a violent crime.

They also said that they regretted the pain that they caused them and that they hoped that they could move on with their lives.

Huskins and Quinn said that they were satisfied with the settlement and the apology, but they also said that money could not erase their trauma or restore their reputation.

They said that they hoped that their case would serve as a lesson for the police to treat victims with respect and dignity.

Rhapsody Of Realities 10 January 2024: Overturn Their Darkness

Rhapsody Of Realities 10 January 2024 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Overturn Their Darkness

TOPIC: Overturn Their Darkness (Rhapsody of Realities 10 January 2024)

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Notice what we just read: Satan, the god of this world, blinded the minds of those who don’t believe the Gospel; for what purpose? So that the light of the “glorious Gospel” of Christ should not shine unto them. But he’s been defeated. Glory to God!

Through the power of the Name of Jesus, we’re able to break Satan’s hold and influence over people’s lives and cause the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ to shine unto them. We overturn their blindness. Hallelujah!

The Bible says in Acts 26:16-18, “…for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness…Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God….” What a ministry; what a calling! We’re sent “… To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God….”

Satan blinded them, but your purpose is to overturn their darkness. You have the power to open their eyes through the Gospel of Jesus Christ which is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe (Romans 1:16).

When you share the Gospel with those who haven’t known the Lord, their eyes are opened. That’s why you’re in that city; that’s why you’re in that town; that’s why you’re in that country—to preach the Gospel and turn men from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God. Hallelujah!

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for the revelation that through the Name of Jesus, we have the authority and ability to overturn the darkness that blinds the minds of those who do not believe. Today, as the Gospel is preached around the world, many are turned from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

DCLM Daily Manna 11 January 2024 — Go Not Down Into Egypt

DCLM Daily Manna 11 January 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Go Not Down Into Egypt

TOPIC: Go Not Down Into Egypt (DCLM Daily Manna 11 January 2024)

KEY VERSE: “And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of” (Genesis 26:2).

TEXT: Genesis 26:1-5 (KJV)

1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Egypt has a very amazing history. The Ancient Egyptians started a civilization that lasted for more than 3000 years. They laid the foundation of what we have today as modern civilization. They contributed significantly to the development of Medicine, Engineering, Astronomy and Mathematics. The division of day and night into 24 hours and use of clock started with them. They also formulated our 365 days calendar.

The prosperity and great influence of Egypt must have been in place even in the time of Abraham. When famine broke out in the days of Abraham, he took refuge in Egypt. God also allowed Jacob to move his family to Egypt when there was acute global famine. In today’s text, we find Isaac in a similar circumstance – caught up in a severe famine while in the land of Canaan, but God instructed him not to go to Egypt. Egypt, with all its glamour and idolatrous culture, was a tough place for a gentle and godly-minded person like Isaac. And God, knowing his frame, did not allow him to go there.

“Go not down into Egypt” has a deeper connotation and relevance to today’s Christians. Ancient Egypt, because of its ungodly influence and vain affluence, came to symbolize the evil worldly system. God said, “Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help…” (Isaiah 31:1). Going down to Egypt means backsliding and going back to bondage. Similarly, we are repeatedly warned not to love or conform to the world and the pride and fleshly lusts that characterise it.

God’s instruction to Isaac not to go down into Egypt came with a promise of His presence and blessings. If you abide at the centre of God’s will, even if it means putting up with temporary adversity, you are assured of God’s presence and blessing beyond your imagination. As you travel through life, it is enough to place your trust in God and He will direct your steps through His word, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

"Whoever Wanted This Man Dead Chased Him to His Death": Who Brutally Murdered John Wilty?

0

Money was at the heart of an unstable marriage that ended in a Mississippi man’s mysterious murder, with his body found at the end of his neighbor’s driveway. As police investigated Angela and John Wilty’s relationship, they discovered plenty of red flags.

How to Watch

Watch Snapped on Oxygen Sundays 6/5c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Oxygen App.

“They fight over money,” Sherrie Driver, Olive Branch police major, said on Snapped, airing Sundays at 6/5c on Oxygen. “They fight over women that Mr. Wilty supposedly was seeing. She didn’t tell us any of this in the interview. We’re taking a step back now, going, ‘Oh my god, they had a very rocky relationship.’”

Although the murder remained unsolved for close to a year, one call to police changed everything, as it led to Angela Wilty’s arrest.

How was John Wilty killed?

A neighbor called 911 dispatchers in Olive Branch, Mississippi just before dawn on the morning of March 23, 2018.

“There’s a dead man laying at the end of my driveway … looks like he’s been shot,” the caller said.

First responders found the man in a pool of blood with two gunshot wounds to the chest. His wallet was found on him, along with his driver’s license which identified him as 50-year-old John Wilty. His address was listed as two doors down from where his body was found.

“It appeared to us that whoever wanted this man dead chased him to his death,” Driver said. “As I’m looking at his hands, it appeared he crawled to where he ultimately died. The skin was coming off of his knuckles.”

After learning Wilty typically left early for work, between 4 and 4:30 a.m., they surmised he was ambushed as he was leaving. His car keys were found at the end of his driveway. His truck was parked outside his home, with the door open. Multiple bullet holes were found in the truck, including a gun casing found in the driver’s side door.

Officers knocked on the door of the home to talk to John’s wife, Angela Wilty. The couple had met in the spring of 2001. Angela was a single mother at the time, raising two boys, while John had five children from three failed relationships. The two had a daughter together in 2002 and got married in 2003.

“They tell her that her husband has been shot, and she didn’t seem very surprised, didn’t seem emotional at all,” said prosecutor Tori Williams on Snapped.

Angela told police she’d been in bed asleep at the time her husband was killed, and didn’t hear anything.

“She had these good things to say about him, but at the same time, there was something off,” said journalist Aisha Raison on Snapped. “She showed no emotion as a widow.”

How was Angela Wilty’s relationship with her husband, John?

Angela allowed police to download the contents of her phone, including texts and emails. What it revealed was that the Wiltys did not have a happy marriage.

“There’s some infidelity,” Driver said. “There’s multiple men that she has long conversations with on the phone, and text messages.”

Police also discovered Angela was constantly in contact with her stepfather, C.S.O. Norvell, about her marriage.

When they spoke to John Wilty’s coworkers, they learned more about his difficult marriage.

“When law enforcement speak to [John’s co-worker] Kyle, they learn that Angela had had an affair and left John at some point, and that John moved out and moved in with Kyle,” Williams said.

Kyle also spoke about an incident involving the married couple in 2015.

“Kyle said her and John had gotten into a big fight … and Angela had cut John’s knee area open with a box cutter,” Driver said.

Angela Wilty’s ex-husband, Michael Casey, also had a shocking reveal for police: He claimed Angela solicited him years ago to kill her new husband, and was even willing to pay him a couple thousand dollars.

“She wanted me to get the gun and everything,” Michael Casey told police during an interview. “I was like, ‘No.’ Basically, it came out of the blue.”

Casey also claimed to police that Angela told him she’d tried to poison John.

“He said she had crushed up some pills at one point in time, and John got sick, but didn’t die, and nobody was sent to the hospital,” Williams said.

Police discovered John Wilty had a $750,000 life insurance policy. His wife and children had been equal beneficiaries until 2015, when the policy changed to leave Angela Wilty as the only beneficiary. Two days after the murder, Angela filed a claim on that life insurance.

Although police had a lot of circumstantial evidence pointing to Angela Wilty, the murder case went nowhere until October 2018.

How did police get a break in the murder case from Angela Wilty’s own son?

In October 2018, six months after John was gunned down, police were called to a domestic disturbance between Angela Wilty and Bradley Casey, Angela’s 20-year-old son. They’d gotten into an argument after Angela took his car away, and Bradley was ready to talk to police.

“In his anger over a car, he begins to spill the beans, stating that he not only knows who killed John but he also knows where the evidence is,” Raison said.

Bradley Casey alleged to police that his mother told him her stepfather, C.S.O. Norvell, killed John Wilty.

“I asked her, was she involved?” Bradley Casey said during a police interview. “And she said, ‘Yes.’ She asked me to hide the gun. I knew where it was … I should’ve called y’all.”

He told police his mother asked him to go to Norvell’s house, get the gun from a cat litter bucket in the backyard, and throw it in a pond behind the home, but he refused.

By the time police searched Norvell’s home, they were unable to find the cat litter bucket in the yard — until they searched a crawl space under the home. The cat litter bucket contained a gun and ammunition. The ammunition matched the casings found at the murder scene. Blood spots found on the gun were identified by DNA analysis as belonging to John Wilty — and the gun was purchased by Angela Wilty.

On March 4, 2019, nearly a year after his death, Angela Wilty was charged with plotting John Wilty’s murder. Norvell was charged with first-degree murder.

Police and prosecutors argued that they’d discovered John Wilty was planning on leaving his wife soon before his murder.

“I believe Angela killed John because she was losing control of the situation,” said Denise Edgeworth, John Wilty’s ex-girlfriend, on Snapped. “He was done.”

Angela accepted a plea deal for reduced charges if she testified against her stepfather. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and is eligible for parole in September 2041 at the age of 59.

In May 2022, Norvell went on trial, but was aquitted by a jury. He was jailed for the parole violation of possession of a firearm.

Open Heaven 8 January 2024 TOPIC: New Year Resolution 7

MEMORISE: “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:16 (KJV)

READ: Ezekiel 14:6-8 (KJV)

6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

7 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the Lord will answer him by myself:

8 And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Genesis 26-28

Open Heaven 8 January 2024 MESSAGE

Over the past six days, we have been studying some resolutions I made for this year, and I have been encouraging all users of this devotional to adopt them as well. I have said that in my walk with God this year, I will worship Him, ask for His help, humble myself, give to Him, trust Him and draw close to Him more than ever before. However, all these would be impossible to achieve if I do not make up my mind to live holy more than ever before. This year, I am determined never to do anything that will offend God. I will live holy more than ever before!

Amos 3:3 says: “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Please check how you have been living in the past years, do you think God will be happy to come close to you knowing fully well that His eyes cannot behold iniquity (Habakkuk 1:13)?

If you really want to get close to God, and you want Him to solve all your problems this year, then you must repent of all your sins and forsake them. Don’t continue to live in sin and expect God’s help. Shall we continue in sin and expect God’s grace to abound? Apostle Paul’s response to that question was, “God forbid!” (Romans 6:1-2). Grace is God’s help, and it cannot abound upon a sinner.

All your seeds, worship, prayers, and so on that you have decided to do this year will be wasted if you do not live a holy life. In other words, if you do not want all your efforts to live by these resolutions this year to be fruitless, you must live holy. God does not hear the prayer of sinners (Psalm 66:18), neither does He accept their sacrifices (Isaiah 59:1-2).

Beloved, for all the resolutions we studied over the past six days to produce the desired result, you must be deliberate about living holy more than ever before this year and beyond. This year, I will not only love righteousness more, but will also hate iniquity more. That way, God will anoint me even much more than ever before (Hebrews 1:9).

The Almighty God will grant you all-round success as you make up your mind to live holy and also adopt all the other resolutions we discussed over the past six days, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 8 January 2024 HYMN 23 – Take My Life, And Let It Be

1 Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

2 Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3 Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Filled with messages from Thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose,
Every power as Thou shalt choose.

5 Take my will, and make it Thine;
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart; it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,
Ever, only, all for Thee.
