Dolly Parton’s Unspoken Feminism: Empowerment Echoes Through Her Life and Lyrics

The January 1987 issue of Ms. magazine, co-founded by the legendary feminist Gloria Steinem, featured its distinguished “12 Women of the Year” on the cover. With a U.S. senator, a celebrated novelist, and a former nun who supported Central American refugees, the group represented diverse achievements. Yet, shining with an unmistakable charm, was none other than Dolly Parton.

This week, the world mourns the beloved country icon, who has passed away at the age of 80. Notably, throughout her life, Parton consistently sidestepped the feminist label, maintaining a distance from political affiliations in general.

Yet, labels are often superficial, and during Parton’s pioneering ascent in the music industry, such terms were relatively nascent. What truly spoke volumes to her fans were the choices she made, her formidable achievements, social connections, and perhaps most poignantly, her lyrics. These elements revealed the fierce independence and deeply-held beliefs of the woman beneath the iconic coiffure and dazzling costume.

In essence, even if she didn’t identify as a feminist, Dolly Parton was embraced by feminist admirers, cherished with both pride and affection.

Dedicated fans like Lynn Melnick, who penned a book detailing how Parton’s music shaped her own journey and healing from trauma, found themselves yearning for any instance where Parton might have used the feminist moniker herself.

“She didn’t tell us she was a feminist,” says Melnick, author of “I’ve Had to Think Up a Way to Survive: On Trauma, Persistence, and Dolly Parton.” “She showed us — in her actions and her words and in her songs. And I think that’s why people loved her so much.”

She skewered a double standard with humor and relatability

Witness the whoops of joy — from women — at the Newport Folk Festival in 2019. A cheeky Parton, then in her early 70s, drew delighted cheers when she sang the famous lyric to “Just Because I’m a Woman”:

“My mistakes are no worse than yours, just because I’m a woman.”

Parton had just explained to the crowd that the song was about a double standard — a reference to a frank conversation she’d had with her husband soon after marriage, when he asked if she’d been with other men.

“When you boys get married you want us to be just as pure as snow — well, sometimes we’re not!” she told the crowd. “This is for you, gals, and your boys just gotta take it, OK?”

The remarks were vintage Parton, making a point without alienating anyone. She was, after all, about relatability.

“One thing about Dolly is that no matter what side of the political spectrum you’re on, you think she’s with you,” Melnick says. “Everyone claims her. And so as a feminist I always thought, well, obviously she’s a feminist, and the more I read about her and wrote about her, it was just undeniable — first of all because of how she lived her life completely on her own terms.”

And those terms involved flipping the script, says music writer Caryn Rose.

“She knew she was blonde and pretty, and that it was always going to work against her,” says Rose. “So she figured out how to make it work FOR her. There’s not anything more feminist than that!”

She earned admiration from an icon of feminism

Or take it from perhaps the most visible icon of the feminist movement: Steinem herself.

“People who haven’t listened to Dolly Parton or to feminism may be surprised to learn that they go together,” Steinem wrote in that 1987 issue. “She has used her business sense to bring other women and poor people along with her. And her flamboyant style has turned all the devalued symbols of women to her own ends.”

“If feminism means each of us finding our unique power, and helping other women to do the same,” Steinem wrote, “Dolly Parton certainly has done both.”

To Evelyn McDonnell, Parton’s looks — the eyelashes, the big hair, the curves — served as an invisible cloak, helping her to freely express progressive views.

“She took the objectification of being a pop star and embraced it,” says McDonnell, editor of the music anthology “Women Who Rock” and professor at Loyola Marymount University. “It was like her magic cloak — she could be saying feminist things and doing feminist things and modeling a life and a voice that was outspoken, progressive, political. But you saw the package and you’re like, ‘Oh, okay.’ It made it safe.”

Parton’s priorities, McDonnell notes, are clear from songs like “9 to 5,” from the movie in which she starred with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. “It’s all about feminism, right? About women in the workplace, economic empowerment, pushing back against the male supervisor, uniting women’s voices.”

Parton addressed equal pay, reproductive justice, teen pregnancy and more

Equal pay was just one of the key women’s issues Parton wrote about. She also, notes author Melnick, addressed reproductive justice, teen pregnancy, double standards regarding sex and “all of these very feminist issues … she was just doing the work quietly, in her songs.”

One such song was “The Bargain Store,” from 1975. “I may have just what you’re looking for, if you don’t mind the fact that all the merchandise is used,” Parton wrote. “But with a little mending, it could be as good as new.”

Country radio, Parton said later, shunned the song because they took it to be about prostitution, when it was really about healing after a relationship. Melnick also sees a “gutsy” message about how a woman has value even without a man.

Then there was “Down from Dover,” about a single teen mother. “I wrote that back during a time when people didn’t talk about unwed mothers,” Parton told Vulture in 2023. “They wouldn’t play that on the radio.”

Some saw in her an early example of third-wave feminism

Melnick posits that Parton, well ahead of her time, exemplified so-called third-wave feminism, which gained currency in the ’90s with a focus on individual choice. A feminism where one could wear big heels, big hair and sparkly rhinestones, for example — as a choice.

And that’s exactly how Parton framed her looks in a 1977 interview with Barbara Walters: “It’s certainly a choice.”

Parton said later that people had warned her against talking to Walters, who’d chew her up and spit her out. But a 31-year old Parton, with quiet confidence and a generous smile, emerged looking far better than her interlocutor.

Walters asked Parton if she thought she was “a joke.” She asked if she was faithful to her husband and why she was even married, if she was constantly traveling. She even asked Parton if her famous breasts were real — blaming the question on an assistant.

Walters also asked Parton to stand up and display her body.

Parton did, politely. But she was as tough as her famous nails when she explained why she was comfortable with the jokes — and, in fact, in on them. Her self-analysis echoed the words of Steinem, who has said feminism “is fundamentally about self-respect and respect for others.”

“I know exactly what I am doing and I can change it at any time,” Parton told Walters. “I make more jokes about myself than anybody … I am sure of myself as a person and I am sure of my talent. I am very content. So I can afford to diddle around with makeup and clothes and stuff because I am secure with myself.”

As some of her fans might ask, is there anything more feminist than that?

Essential Guide to 2026 COVID and Flu Vaccines: What You Need to Know

0

Immunizations for COVID-19 and influenza for the upcoming 2026 season have received official clearance.

WASHINGTON — On Thursday, Moderna and Pfizer BioNTech revealed that their newly updated COVID-19 vaccines have gained the green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

These vaccines are expected to hit shelves at neighborhood pharmacies and healthcare offices within the next few days.

The fresh formulations focus on the XFG subvariant, which was responsible for a surge in COVID-19 cases last year, as reported by New York Presbyterian.

Who is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine?

Those eligible for the Moderna vaccine include individuals aged 65 and older, as well as those aged 6 months and above with underlying health challenges, such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, cardiac issues, and obesity, which heightens their risk of severe COVID-19 effects.

Pfizer’s vaccine is approved for people over 65, and people 5 and older with underlying conditions.

What is the risk of COVID-19 right now?

As of Aug. 26, the Centers for Disease Control reported COVID-19 infections are growing or likely growing in 48 states, and declining in zero of them. However, the weekly percentage of emergency department visits is very low.

Will vaccines be available for free to everyone?

CVS said the new COVID-19 vaccine will be available in pharmacies for eligible customers at no cost, depending on insurance coverage. Walgreens said it would be available shortly. A prescription may be required in some states if a patient is under 65 or doesn’t have underlying health conditions, but other states have said anyone who wants a vaccine will be able to get one.

Last year, coronavirus shots were not available for the start of the season at many pharmacies nationwide after U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in June 2025. He hand-picked several vaccine skeptics to replace them, leading to delays in the CDC’s recommendation on who should receive the shots. The panel ultimately narrowed their recommendations for who should get the vaccine to older people or those at risk of complications. This year, the ACIP is blocked from meeting because of a federal court order challenging the appointments to the panel.

Many insurers have said they’ll continue to cover the vaccine’s entire cost to patients of the vaccine despite the federal hold.

What about the flu vaccine?

Updated flu vaccines are also now available at major pharmacies. Health experts say September or October are the best times to get vaccinated, before the annual flu season peaks. The CDC recommends that nearly everyone six months and older get the flu vaccine each year.

The CDC said the 2025-2026 flu vaccine is trivalent, meaning it protects against three main influenza viruses: a Type A(H1N1) virus, a Type A(H3N2) virus, and a Type B/Victoria lineage virus.

The FDA has also approved the first mRNA influenza vaccine, mFlusiva. It’s intended for people age 50 and older and was developed using the same technology as the coronavirus vaccine.

Health officials say it’s safe for most people to get a flu and COVID-19 shot at the same time.

Tragic Rampage: Father Kills Daughter and Three Others After Disturbing Threats

In a heartbreaking case from Florida, a man has confessed to a quadruple homicide, which included his teenage daughter among the victims. Fueled by anger over a strained relationship, the 40-year-old broke into the house where she resided with her mother and new family, leading to the fatal confrontation.

Facing serious charges, Domenico C. Gigante took on the role of his own defense attorney and admitted guilt on Thursday. He pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree premeditated murder, as well as one count of armed burglary of a dwelling with a firearm inflicting death, all of which are capital felony charges, according to official reports.

A statement from the 18th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office confirmed that prosecutors are continuing their efforts to secure the death penalty for Gigante. Having waived his right to a jury trial, the decision on his possible execution rests with Circuit Judge Laura Moody.

The horrific crime claimed the lives of his daughter, Kiarra Terwilliger; her mother, 35-year-old Constance Terwilliger; the maternal grandmother, 63-year-old Glenda Terwilliger; and Michael Watson, who was Constance Terwilliger’s boyfriend, aged 36.

“My end goal today is to take full accountability,” Gigante, a former emergency medical technician, said during the plea hearing. “I know what I did was evil and wrong. I’m here to get on my knees … and for justice to be served for those affected by what I’ve done.”

Authorities said Gigante had been growing increasingly “angered by a strained relationship with his daughter and her refusal to have a relationship with him.” On the night before the killings, he told his roommate that he was fed up with his daughter and “her family,” declaring, “I guess I’m going to go over them and kill them all.”

At 12:57 a.m. on March 1, 2023, surveillance footage showed Gigante leaving his Rockledge home in his Dodge pickup with a black object that appeared to be a firearm.

About 20 minutes later, a surveillance camera at a neighboring residence captured a vehicle matching Gigante’s truck entering the driveway of the home on Alan Shepard Avenue. At approximately 1:21 a.m., the recording captured several gunshots and a woman screaming. About two minutes later, the camera captured the truck’s lights leaving the driveway.

Inside the home, deputies found a man and woman dead on the living room floor surrounded by a “large pool of blood.” Nearby, authorities recovered a shell casing and discovered bloody footprints. Deputies found the body of an older woman in another bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head, while the teen lay dead in a second bedroom.

Two children, ages 6 and 9, survived the massacre and called a relative for help after Gigante fled.

Investigators soon identified Gigante as a suspect. When his roommate learned that Gigante’s daughter had been killed, he immediately asked Gigante, “Did you do this?”

Gigante said that “he had” and told the roommate that “he shot [his daughter] three times,” according to the affidavit. The roommate also noted that Gigante had previously vented about “his frustrations regarding his situation” with his daughter.

Investigators located Gigante in Spanish Fort, Alabama, inside Constance Terwilliger’s vehicle and took him into custody. Inside the vehicle, they recovered a Taurus handgun that investigators later confirmed as the weapon used in the killings.

In announcing its intent to seek the death penalty, the State Attorney’s Office cited the four murders, the killing of Gigante’s daughter while she was under his familial authority, the allegation that the killings were committed in a “cold, calculated and premeditated manner,” and the fact that the murders occurred while Gigante was committing armed burglary.

Gigante, who was initially represented by a public defender, chose in July to represent himself. He later waived his right to a jury trial and a jury penalty proceeding before pleading guilty Thursday.

“The state doesn’t need to prove anything beyond a reasonable doubt. I’m guilty, and I meet the aggravating factors. I have no interest in appealing,” Gigante told Circuit Judge Laura Moody.

Moody is expected to determine whether Gigante will be sentenced to death at a hearing scheduled for late October or early November.

Angel Reese’s Eighth Technical Foul Rescinded by WNBA Officials

0

In a nail-biting game against the Portland Fire, Angel Reese of the Dream faced a potential setback after being issued her eighth technical foul of the season during a 101-83 defeat on Friday night.

However, in a twist of events, ESPN shared shortly after the match that the WNBA had decided to overturn the foul. This decision kept Reese’s technical fouls at seven, allowing her to avoid an automatic one-game suspension.

The technical foul came early in the final quarter, with 8:45 on the clock, as the Dream lagged behind 76-61.

In the midst of a heated rebound battle, Reese found herself tangled with Portland’s guard, Carla Leite. The tussle saw Leite seemingly blocking Reese as she strived to secure a better position by the basket.

As they parted ways, Reese appeared to push Leite, though it was clear that Leite’s left arm was hooked around Reese’s back, complicating the situation.

Officials assessed Reese a technical, bringing her season total to eight, which would have meant a suspension against the league-leading Lynx. But the call was rescinded, and Reese will be eligible to play.

“Yeah, I’m sure that we’ll appeal it,” Dream head coach Karl Smesko said after the game and before the league made the decision. “From my vantage point, it didn’t look like something that was tech-worthy, so hopefully it’ll be rescinded. But I haven’t had the benefit of watching it on film yet or anything like that. But I think that’s probably something that we’re going to try to get rescinded.”

Reese has been walking the disciplinary line for nearly seven weeks, having received her seventh technical on July 9 against the Storm.

The Reese situation also has a recent parallel involving old “rival” Caitlin Clark.

Clark appeared to receive her eighth technical during the Indiana Fever’s 90-86 victory over the Chicago Sky on Aug. 8, which would have forced her to serve a one-game suspension.

The WNBA rescinded the technical several hours later after reviewing the play, keeping the fellow All-Star at seven technicals.

The loss dropped the playoff-bound Dream to 25-14 on the season, losing a 1/2-game edge on the Fever, who jumped them for the No. 4 seed in the standings on Friday.

In the loss to the Fire — who improved to 16-23 — Reese ended the night with 16 points, 16 rebounds and six assists.

Rhyne Howard paced the Dream with a team-high 26 points, including six made threes.

Leite powered the Fire with 26 points and six assists while shooting 9-for-13 from the field, complemented by a career-high 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting from Queens native Emily Engstler, who also recorded six rebounds and hit a trifecta of 3-pointers on five attempts.

Heather Locklear and Lorenzo Lamas Radiate Love at LAX in Heartwarming Reunion

Heather Locklear and Lorenzo Lamas are making headlines as they appear to be embarking on a romantic adventure together, suggesting a significant milestone in their relationship.

The couple, clearly smitten with each other, were spotted at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday. Locklear was seen toting a large bag while Lamas opted for a backpack, both appearing well-prepared for their travels.

The 64-year-old Melrose Place actress kept her style casual yet chic in a white tank top pairing it with flowing blue pants, a baseball cap, and flats, accessorized with sunglasses and reading glasses dangling from her top.

Meanwhile, the 68-year-old Renegade star, who is currently finalizing his sixth divorce from Kenna Nicole Scott with a November 16 closing date, maintained a laid-back look. He donned a t-shirt that highlighted his impressive biceps, jeans, a striking red cap, and a pair of cool sunglasses.

Locklear seemed to be in high spirits, a positive change from just two days prior when she was caught barefoot and vaping outside her podcast studio. Lamas, on the other hand, seemed focused as he took in the bustling airport scene.

While their destination wasn’t revealed at the time, they are expected to attend the For the Love of Retro convention coming up in the UK next weekend.

Last week, Locklear and Lamas were all smiles as they filmed a video announcing their participation at the event.

In the clip posted to Instagram, Locklear was sitting on Lamas’ lap while cradling her Maltese dog, Mister, and Lamas was resting a hand on her thigh.

After introducing themselves, Locklear said: ‘We want to invite you to For the Love of Retro.’

‘That’s right,’ Lamas interjected. ‘It’s at Telford International Centre on the 5th and 6th [of September].’

‘In Telford, England,’ Locklear added. ‘And we want you to come and say hi, take photos, selfies….’

‘Invade our personal space’, the actor chimed in.

‘Yeah! Like I am him,’ Locklear playfully said and pointed a thumb in Lamas’ direction while Lamas nuzzled in a little closer.

‘See ya there,’ they said in unison.

The couple, whose romance ignited in late 2025, more than 40 years after they famously posed for a joint Playgirl cover, will join a long list of other stars at the nostalgia-themed, pop culture event including Brian Austin Green, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Josh Holloway, Jane Seymour, Steven Berkoff, Vernon Wells and Caroline Bliss.

Do you think finding love later in life is more genuine or just another Hollywood romance?

In June, Locklear spoke about her romance with Lamas for the first time on the Hollywood and Divine podcast.

‘My new guy is very… everything,’ she said. ‘I’m just like, when I tell this person I love him, I’m really saying, “I love you, God.” Because that’s what happened. It’s from God. I’m [in] the best time [of my life].’

Locklear and Lamas made their first public appearance as a couple at the Chiller Theatre Expo in April, where they greeted fans as they sat side by side.

And the actor admitted he never expected to find love with the former Spin City star.

Asked if he ever imagined things coming full circle like this, Lamas told Fox News Digital: ‘The short answer is no. I mean, I’ve been through a lot of trial and error, and she is the most amazing woman that I think I’ve ever met.’

Back in December, Lamas took to X to share their vintage Playgirl cover, for which she posed in a red bikini and he in swim briefs.

He wrote in the caption: ‘I cannot believe that this was 43 years ago! Side note, speedos on request only #HeatherLocklear #Playgirl #80s’

And in April, he shared the throwback photo in another post which has since been deleted but appeared to confirm their relationship.

According to Hello! magazine, he quoted Corinthians 13:4-7, and wrote: ‘100 years ago. God’s grace is truly amazing. “Love is patient, love is kind… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”’

In November last year, the pair were spotted at a dinner party in New York City, before reuniting at Barry’s Steakhouse in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve.

Lamas has been married six times in the past.

He has children AJ, 43, and Shayne, 41, with second wife Michele Smith; Paton 37, with ex Daphne Ashbrook; and Alexandra, 28, Victoria, 27, and Isabella, 25, with fourth wife Shauna Sand.

In July 2025, he filed for divorce from former model Kenna Nicole Scott after less than two years of marriage.

Locklear, who also starred in Dynasty, was previously married to Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee before their divorce in 1993. Shortly after, she tied the knot with Bon Jovi rocker Richie Sambora.

Last year, she ended her long-term, sometimes turbulent relationship with Chris Heisser, who she first dated in high school. He proposed in 2020 but they never got married, and split in 2025.

Jen Shah Released: RHOSLC Alum Completes Sentence Following Home Confinement

Before the fiery exchange of words between Lisa and Meredith during their Zion getaway, there was an unforgettable hot mic moment. In a private setting, Lisa unleashed her frustrations, exclaiming, “Meredith can go f–k herself. I’m done with her, ’cause I’m not a f–king whore and I don’t cheat on my husband.”

Lisa didn’t hold back as her tirade escalated, targeting Meredith’s family. She sneered, “Her and her dumb f–king family that poses. Why don’t you own a house? Oh wait, you can’t because your husband changes jobs every five minutes. Fake Meredith is a piece of s–t…f–k you! That f–king piece of s–t garbage whore. I f–king hate her. She’s a whore. She’s f–ked half of New York! She can go f–k herself.”

In response, Meredith addressed these remarks on WWHL, rejecting the allegations and sharing with host Andy Cohen her ongoing struggle to understand Lisa’s insinuations, especially the bombshell claim about “f–ked half of New York.”

Meredith speculated, “Maybe it’s projecting? I don’t really know.”

She elaborated, “I know Seth and I have always been transparent. We’ve had periods where we dated other people,” referring to her 2019 separation from her husband. “We haven’t dated a lot of others. I couldn’t even have 10 boyfriends because I’ve never slept with 10 people in my life.”

Nashville Airport to Be Renamed After Icon Dolly Parton

In a grand tribute to an enduring legend, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, alongside authorities from Nashville International Airport, revealed plans to rename the airport in honor of Dolly Parton. This announcement follows a swelling wave of public admiration for the late country music icon’s legacy.

Governor Lee mentioned that discussions with Parton’s representatives have commenced this week regarding the initiative. Her team has graciously acknowledged the support and seemed receptive to further dialogue, as shared in a joint statement from both the governor’s office and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.

The plan aims to align Parton’s name with the gateway to Music City, marrying the airport’s international reach with the influence of a woman whose music and philanthropic endeavors have profoundly touched her home state, making her a cherished figure in Tennessee.

“Dolly Parton’s remarkable journey is intrinsically linked to our state’s heritage,” remarked Lee while paying homage to the Tennessee native, who passed away on Tuesday at 80, following a short battle with cancer. “From her humble beginnings in the mountains of East Tennessee to her global acclaim, Dolly exemplified the Volunteer Spirit wherever she went.

“Naming Nashville International Airport after Tennessee’s most beloved daughter is a fitting tribute. It would introduce travelers to the state’s hospitality, which Dolly’s music, benevolence, faith, and kindness so beautifully represent,” Lee added.

The announcement comes amid a groundswell of support for renaming the airport after Parton. A Change.org petition titled “Rename Nashville International Airport to Dolly Parton International Airport” had accumulated 155,501 verified signatures, according to the petition page.

The petition was originally launched in January 2025 by Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion, who argued that Parton’s influence extended far beyond the music that made her famous, pointing to her philanthropy and her Imagination Library literacy program.

Following Parton’s death this week, the organizers said tens of thousands of additional supporters signed the petition and renewed their effort to have Nashville’s airport carry her name.

The campaign has also drawn support from Tennessee officials. State Rep. Todd Warner said in a response published on the petition page that he would introduce legislation supporting the change.

“Yes I will definitely introduce legislation to rename the BNA airport Dolly Parton International Airport! Thanks, TW,” Warner wrote, according to the response reproduced by Change.org.

Nashville Council member Russ Bradford also said he would sponsor a resolution asking the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority to consider the change, while stressing that the authority, rather than the council, has the ultimate say over the airport’s name.

“I’m proud to sponsor a resolution asking the Metro Nashville Airport Authority to consider renaming BNA to Dolly Parton International Airport,” Bradford said in a response published by Change.org.

The tribute carries particular resonance because Parton had previously resisted efforts to put her own legacy on a pedestal.

In 2021, Parton asked Tennessee lawmakers to withdraw a bill that would have allowed a statue of her to be erected on the grounds of the state Capitol.

“I am honored and humbled by their intention, but I have asked the leaders of the state legislature to remove the bill from any and all consideration,” Parton said at the time in a post shared to social media.

She explained that she did not believe such an honor was appropriate while the country was confronting larger challenges, but left open the possibility that Tennessee might honor her in that way someday.

“Given all that is going on in the world, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time,” Parton said. “I hope, though, that somewhere down the road several years from now or perhaps after I’m gone if you still feel I deserve it, then I’m certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean.”

The proposal to rename the airport will be discussed at the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s next meeting on Sept. 17, according to their release.

Jets vs. Giants: Key Takeaways from Preseason Finale Defeat that Could Impact Regular Season

0

The New York Jets faced a tough night at MetLife Stadium, falling to the New York Giants with a score of 23-6. Let’s dive into three critical insights from this game.

1. Friday night was riddled with injuries for the Jets, but the spotlight falls on edge rusher Joseph Ossai, who suffered a significant foot injury. Ossai’s role was pegged as crucial for the upcoming season.

Despite the setbacks, the Jets largely emerged from training camp relatively unscathed. The most notable injuries included Breece Hall, dealing with a groin strain, and Kenyon Sadiq, recovering from a hernia surgery. Fortunately, both players are anticipated to make their return soon.

2. Although their run without interceptions won’t officially conclude until the regular season lands them one, the Jets made strides by securing three interceptions over the last two weeks of preseason play. On Friday, Marcelino McCrary-Ball intercepted a pass from Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston.

Moreover, the Jets recovered a fumble during the game. This performance is notable, given that the team ended last season with zero interceptions and only four total takeaways.

3. Nate Lynn registered another sack Friday night. The Jets picked up the edge rusher 10 days ago, and he had two sacks in the preseason game with the Steelers last week before adding another against the Giants.

He probably arrived too late to compete for a roster spot, but he should be signed to the practice squad.

Beloved ‘Swift Justice’ Host and OJ Simpson Judge Passes Away at 70

Jackie Glass, the distinguished TV show judge known for sentencing O.J. Simpson to prison, has passed away at the age of 70.

Jackie Glass, a former judge of Clark County who won recognition after she succeeded Nancy Grace as the host on the television series Swift Justice, died on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas, reports TMZ.

In 2008, Glass made headlines when she handed down a sentence of up to 33 years to Simpson, following his conviction for armed robbery and kidnapping.

She gained further acclaim by stepping into the shoes of Nancy Grace, anchoring the TV court show’s final season from 2011 to 2012.

Glass’s tenure on the television bench was underpinned by eight years of judicial service on Nevada’s Eighth Judicial District Court, which she served from 2003 until her retirement.

Glass is survived by her husband, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, and her daughters, municipal court judge Rebecca Wolfson and stuntwoman Rachel Wolfson.

‘Rip my rock, I don’t know how I’ll do this life without you,’ Rachel posted on social media Friday night. ‘I love you so much mommy, I’ll see you again someday.’

Glass had most recently worked as a mediator for Advanced Resolution Management, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

‘Judge Glass was an inspiring role model who spent her life fighting for justice for others,’ Cortez Masto posted on X. ‘Her light extinguished too soon.’

Former Clark County District Attorney David Roger said he and his family were ‘very sad’ about Glass’s death.

‘She was a respected jurist,’ Roger told News3. ‘But more importantly, she was a warm and friendly person.’

Glass had worked as a journalist and radio reporter in Las Vegas during the early 1980s before embarking on her legal career.

She was remembered by former colleague Steve Herman as ’empathetic and funny.’

Glass’s law career started after she graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1984.

She worked as an associate and as an attorney from various firms from 1985 to 1990 until founding the firm Wolfson & Glass with her husband.

Her focus for the firm was personal injury and criminal defense until 2002, when she was elected to the Nevada Eighth Judicial District Court.

One year later, Glass helped create the Clark County Mental Health Court to try to improve the criminal justice system’s dealings with mental illness.

In 2008, Glass received her highest profile case when she presided over Simpson’s proceedings for charges over a 2007 confrontation in a Vegas hotel room.

She memorably pushed back on an apology offered by Simpson during his sentencing hearing.

‘Earlier in this case, at a bail hearing, I asked – said – to Mr. Simpson I didn’t know if he was arrogant or ignorant or both,’ Glass told him, per the San Diego Union Tribune. ‘And during the trial and through this proceeding, I got this answer, and it was both.’

Glass retired from her Clark County judge role in May 2011 ahead of her new role as Swift Justice host.

She had overseen her district’s drug and alcohol treatment courts during her last year on the bench.

‘I really do care whether you succeed or not,’ Glass told participants in her drug court ahead of her departure, per the Las Vegas Sun. ‘All I want you to do is get clean and sober and stay out of the criminal justice system.’

Grace left the show because production was moving from Atlanta to Los Angeles, which would take her away from her young kids.

Glass hosted the show’s second and final season before it was pulled off the air in April 2012.

She then became a private judge with Vegas-based mediation service Private Trials before moving to her final role with Advanced Resolution Management.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Glass’s family for comment.

Wanted Fugitive Escapes Police Twice, Apprehended After Entering Panda Express

In an unexpected twist of fate, a man wanted in California, who had twice eluded capture by dashing onto a freeway, inadvertently found himself running out of good fortune. His luck ran dry when he wandered into a Panda Express, only to spot the very officers he had previously outmaneuvered enjoying their lunch, police reported.

Two thrilling attempts to escape. Twice he darted onto the freeway and evaded law enforcement. But the third encounter took a surprising turn.

It was officers from the Monrovia Police Department who recognized the suspect as soon as he entered the restaurant. Seizing the moment, they promptly arrested him, thus concluding a month-long pursuit to serve a no-bail felony probation warrant.

The body camera footage vividly reveals the moment two officers, who were quietly eating, suddenly leaped into action. They swiftly apprehended the unidentified man, bringing him to the ground, amid surprised diners in the bustling restaurant.

Police said the man was wanted on a no-bail warrant for a probation violation.

The encounter unfolded July 17, but police released video of the arrest Thursday.

In the video, the suspect asks the officers, “What did I do?”

One officer responds, “You’ve been wanted. You’ve been running from me for like a month.”

Police said officers had previously attempted to arrest the man on two separate occasions while he was out walking. Both times, he allegedly ran onto the freeway and managed to evade them.

The breakthrough came as officers were taking a lunch break at Panda Express when the wanted man “walked right up to them,” police said.

“At this point, we’re not sure if it was good police work, bad timing, or the irresistible smell of chow mein,” the department joked. “Either way, an arrest was made.”

The officers apparently didn’t let the arrest keep them from finishing lunch.

“And don’t worry the officers went back for their food and finished their chow mein,” the department said. “Priorities.”
