Trump Criticizes Alina Habba’s $50 Million Deal With Pardoned Venezuelan Banker’s Family

0

President Trump on Saturday night sharply criticized his former personal attorney, Alina Habba, over her reported $50 million contract with the family of a Venezuelan banker whom he later pardoned, describing the arrangement as “totally obnoxious and outrageous.”

“I thought it was terrible,” Trump told reporters as he arrived at a Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. He joked that he had come dressed as himself.

The president said he had told Habba that he did not want her to accept payment.

“You know, it’s one thing for a person to get paid legal fees or whatever. She’s a lawyer,” Trump said. “I thought it was totally obnoxious and outrageous, and it’s not acceptable. Not acceptable at all.”

The family of Julio Herrera Velutini guaranteed Habba more than $50 million over four years for serving as general counsel of Concord Partners, a family company registered only days before she joined it, The New York Times reported last week.

Herrera, a billionaire banker, had previously faced federal bribery charges. By August 2025, however, the case had been reduced to a guilty plea on a single misdemeanor campaign finance violation.

According to the Times, Habba’s compensation included a $10 million annual retainer as well as bonuses. The 42-year-old attorney helped arrange the position while she was still employed by the Justice Department.

Habba had been working at Concord Partners for only two weeks when Trump pardoned her boss’s father.

Habba has maintained that the timing was entirely coincidental.

“Any insinuation that my employment — all of which has been vetted and disclosed to the DOJ — had anything to do with securing a pardon is false,” Habba told the Times.

The White House has also denied that the employment arrangement was connected to the pardon, the newspaper reported.

The Times reported that Trump “erupted” after learning about the contract and later told aides and allies that some of the money should go toward his future presidential library or another organization linked to him.

On Saturday, Trump said he did not necessarily expect Habba to pay the money herself. But he continued to condemn the arrangement, saying, “it’s unacceptable what she did.”

The criticism represents a striking reversal for a woman who until recently ranked among Trump’s most outspoken loyalists. Habba became widely known as Trump’s personal attorney in 2021 before serving briefly as counselor to the president. She later became the top federal prosecutor at the New Jersey US Attorney’s Office, a position she left last December.

The reported contract comes after several eventful weeks for Habba. She married Turkish billionaire Turhan Mildon on Sept. 26 in a ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria. One source estimated the wedding cost at approximately $10 million. FBI Director Kash Patel, Attorney General Todd Blanche and boxer Mike Tyson were among the guests.

Less than two weeks later, during an Oct. 9 meeting in the Oval Office, Habba accused Ric Grenell, the former executive director of the Kennedy Center, of failing to deposit $5.6 million that her new husband had designated for the institution. The money was allegedly part of a $17.6 million wire transfer Mildon sent in May 2025 to Texas Armament & Technology, a defense software company.

Trump subsequently referred the dispute to White House Counsel Will Scharf.

Mildon’s attorneys later produced a text message that they said showed Grenell promising Mildon access to the president. Axios subsequently reported that the $17.6 million had come not from Mildon, but from the finance ministry of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Grenell has denied wrongdoing and reportedly denied sending the message.

“Absurd. I’ve never asked for one cent to be sent somewhere else pretending it was for the Kennedy Center and I’ve never received any payment from him at all,” Grenell wrote on X.

Justice Department Seeks Sanctions Over Analysis Challenging Its Noncitizen Voting Claims

0

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department on Sunday stood by the accuracy of a list containing more than 20,000 people it says are suspected noncitizens registered to vote in California. The department also asked a federal judge to consider whether an immigrant rights organization and its attorneys should be held in contempt after they released an analysis of the names.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg granted the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, known as CHIRLA, access to federal data concerning the 20,000 people the Trump administration has identified as alleged noncitizen voters in California. Boasberg, who sits in Washington, D.C., ordered the plaintiffs not to reveal any names from the list and limited their use of the data to arguments about their legal standing to challenge the administration’s actions.

In court filings submitted Saturday, attorneys for the immigrant rights group said their review found that more than 40% of the individuals listed did not appear in California’s voter file. Their analysis also identified 22 people who were likely naturalized U.S. citizens and indicated that thousands of other U.S. citizens may have been included.

The Justice Department argued in a filing Sunday that the group’s analysis was unrelated to its legal standing and therefore breached Boasberg’s order.

“The report’s political grandstanding about alleged inaccuracies that purportedly impact California voters generally, or comparisons between the government’s list and the full ‘California voter file,’ has no relevance to whether the particular plaintiffs in this case have standing,” the department wrote.

The filing further asked Boasberg to refer the issue to the Justice Department for an investigation into possible criminal contempt of court.

Alberto Lammers, a spokesman for the University of California, Los Angeles’ Voting Rights Project, which brought the case and conducted the data analysis for CHIRLA, said in an emailed statement: “Plaintiffs’ counsel and their experts fully complied with the Court’s orders.”

In a separate case, the Justice Department on Sunday appealed a Friday night ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Trina L. Thompson. The San Francisco-based judge barred the department from ordering election offices to remove possible noncitizens from voter rolls, segregate their ballots or threaten legal action. The department has pointed out that Thompson issued the ruling before the federal government had an opportunity to submit its initial arguments.

Thompson scheduled a hearing on the appeal for Monday.

The case is among several legal defeats for the Trump administration in its effort to act on lists of alleged noncitizen voters. In California, a federal judge rejected the administration’s request to require election officials to separate ballots cast by those voters, warning that such an order so close to the election could “wreak havoc” on the state’s election. Two appellate judges later agreed.

California election officials have also said the list contains widespread errors and that they lack the time to complete the painstaking process legally required to remove voters from the rolls just days before an election. Voters attest that they are U.S. citizens when registering, and those who cast ballots while ineligible risk felony prosecution.

The administration maintains that it carefully assembled the list using California’s voter registration data and comparisons with federal citizenship records. The Justice Department has issued a series of subpoenas to California election offices and warned officials that knowingly allowing noncitizens to vote could result in criminal charges.

Savannah Guthrie Makes Heartbreaking Plea Amid Mom’s Disappearance

0

“TODAY” co-host Savannah Guthrie made another emotional appeal for information about her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, on Sunday, nine months after the 84-year-old disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home.

Guthrie posted an old drawing by her daughter, Vale. The image shows a blue umbrella beneath falling rain alongside the words, “I know it might not seem like it, but I really need my mommy.”

“Found this old drawing from my daughter today,” Guthrie wrote on Instagram. “It says so much about how I feel.”

“The world goes on, things appear ‘normal’ — as we try to keep going and be strong, especially for our young kids — but it’s not and it never will be,” she added.

“For Annie and Tommy, for Cam and Kristine, for Mike and me and for all of Mom’s beloved grandchildren: We ache for her, we cry out for answers, we cannot move forward,” Guthrie wrote.

“We need someone to help us, tell us what you know. Our mom was a light in this world. We want to celebrate her and give her the dignity she deserves. The reward is still available. Please. We are begging you. Please help us.”

Guthrie thanked everyone who has stood by her family and asked the public to “join us in praying without ceasing.”

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on Feb. 1 after she was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson shortly before 10 p.m. on Jan. 31.

Investigators believe she was taken against her will.

Doorbell camera footage captured a masked, armed person apparently interfering with the device at the home.

The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have not named a suspect, and no arrests have been reported.

While continuing her work on “TODAY,” Guthrie has remained publicly focused on finding answers in her mother’s disappearance.

During a June appearance on “TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle,” she pushed back against suggestions that she had moved on from the case.

“I know maybe people wonder, ‘What’s going on? How is she able to do that job? Is she not thinking about it? Did she forget?’ No. Never,” Guthrie said.

“It’s always with me. I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home,” she said.

In August, six months after her mother vanished, Guthrie and her siblings released a statement renewing their appeal for information about Nancy Guthrie.

“Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on — because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do. But make no mistake — our hearts are in ruins,” Guthrie wrote. “Cam and Kristine, Annie and Tommy, Mike and me — we spend every waking moment thinking of her, longing for her, looking for her.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Friday the Nancy Guthrie Task Force was continuing to work with laboratories to advance DNA analysis.

“Earlier this month, investigators traveled to Florida to meet with lab scientists to see what more could be done to advance this case,” the department wrote on X. “A number of ideas were discussed, and we continue to work with all our partners to solve this case.”

The agency reminded the public that no tip is too small.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously said Guthrie “did not leave on her own.”

Authorities released the contents of two ransom notes in July. The first, sent Feb. 2, claimed Guthrie was safe and demanded $4 million in bitcoin for her release.

The second, sent four days later, claimed she had died shortly after being kidnapped.

Investigators said the notes contained distinctive writing patterns and asked anyone who recognized the style to contact authorities.

A possible additional ransom text message reported in September was later deemed not credible by investigators.

UK Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood May Ease Immigration Reforms

0

Plans to tighten Britain’s immigration rules are expected to be significantly diluted on Monday following a damaging internal struggle within the Labour Party.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s proposals would have required low-skilled overseas workers to wait substantially longer before gaining settled status. However, the plans have been redrafted after fierce opposition from Labour’s Left wing.

Ms Mahmood is now widely expected to concede ground, despite warning only months ago that failing to introduce her original proposals in full could cost taxpayers £10billion.

She previously argued that watering down the measures would be “an affront to the idea of fairness within our society”.

The Home Secretary also acknowledged that a weaker policy would place “further strain on public services like housing and healthcare”.

The extent of the changes is expected to become clear when Ms Mahmood makes a statement in the Commons on Monday afternoon.

Her proposals have sparked a major dispute within the Labour Party.

Angela Rayner denounced the plans as “un-British” in March, when she was serving as a backbencher. She has since returned to the Cabinet under Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh, regarded as an emerging Labour Government star, also criticised the proposals last month.

The full extent of Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's capitulation is expected to be revealed in a statement in the Commons later

At present, most migrants can apply for settlement after five years of lawful residence in the UK. Settled status allows access to the full range of welfare benefits and can eventually lead to British citizenship.

Under Ms Mahmood’s original blueprint, the standard qualifying period for settled status—officially known as indefinite leave to remain, or ILR—would have doubled to ten years.

Low-skilled overseas workers and migrants who received welfare support during that period would have faced even longer waits.

Anyone who had claimed benefits for up to 12 months would have seen the qualifying period rise to 15 years.

Those who had received benefits for more than a year would have been required to wait 20 years.

People who entered Britain illegally, including those arriving by small boat, would have faced waits of up to 25 years before becoming eligible for settled status.

By contrast, foreign workers in senior public-sector positions, including doctors and nurses, would have retained a five-year route. The same would have applied to others judged to have made a significant contribution through higher tax payments.

Ms Mahmood originally presented the measures as a way to manage the impact of between 1.3million and 2.2million foreign nationals expected to become eligible for ILR between this year and 2030.

That figure includes 463,000 people who arrived through the foreign care worker visa route, which was widely exploited through fraudulent applications.

In an interview last weekend, Housing Secretary Ms Rayner suggested that the revised approach would be “fair” to overseas workers already living in Britain, including those employed in care roles.

‘I’ve every confidence that Shabana will come up with a fair system that is fair to the taxpayers of today, that recognises the contribution that people make who come to this country, who work in our public services,’ she said.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: ‘It’s clear Shabana Mahmood has been forced to surrender to Angela Rayner and the open-borders Labour Left.

‘She will now allow hundreds of thousands of low-wage and no-wage migrants to stay in the UK forever and claim benefits.

‘By Mahmood’s own admission in a speech this March, letting low wage care workers alone stay forever will cost taxpayers £10billion and be an “affront”.

‘Now she looks like she’s about to do exactly that.

‘After talking tough all year, Mahmood now appears to have capitulated control of immigration policy to Angela Rayner – and Mahmood’s position is looking increasingly untenable.’

He added: ‘The Conservative plan is a ten-year route to ILR, only for high wage workers.

‘No more low-wage workers should be allowed in, and those already here should be required to leave when their temporary work visa expires.’

Australian influencer Tammy Hembrow criticised for skipping Halloween tradition

0

Tammy Hembrow has faced criticism after appearing to break from her family’s annual Halloween tradition to attend Melbourne’s spring racing carnival with her younger boyfriend.

The 32-year-old Queensland influencer attended Derby Day at Flemington on Saturday with 23-year-old Grayson Te Moana. She turned heads in a strapless lace dress with a sheer bodice.

However, her glamorous appearance at the races prompted questions online because Tammy has previously shared photos of herself dressing up with her three children and taking them trick-or-treating each Halloween.

‘So she ditched her kids’ Halloween dress up, family tradition to go to Melbourne,’ one social media user wrote beneath a photo of Tammy at the event.

‘First year [Grayson’s] been around and it’s already happening,’ they added.

Another commenter noted that Tammy’s children had not entirely missed out on the family celebration this year.

‘She did the Halloween dress up earlier in the week. But yeah, she does it every year. Truly sad,’ the user wrote.

Tammy shares 11-year-old son Wolf and nine-year-old daughter Saskia with ex-fiancé Reece Hawkins. She also has four-year-old daughter Posy with former fiancé Matt Poole.

Her appearance at the races comes as her relationship with Grayson continues to draw attention from the public.

The pair, who have a nine-year age difference, confirmed their relationship in February after sharing a kiss on the red carpet at the Sydney premiere of Wuthering Heights.

Grayson was back in the headlines last month after Tammy disclosed that he had experienced a ‘tense encounter’ with her former partner Reece.

Speaking on the Inherited podcast, Tammy told host Ruby Hall that Grayson had recently crossed paths with her former partner and the father of her children on the Gold Coast. She said the meeting was awkward for both men.

‘They actually met… it was nothing, really! They didn’t even shake hands, Grayson said hi, but it was a bit of a tense encounter,’ Tammy said.

‘It was very much like the current boyfriend meeting the ex! That is the best way I can describe it. I feel like it was going to happen at some point.’

Despite the frosty meeting with Reece, Tammy said Grayson had been warmly welcomed by her family and friends.

‘Grayson has met all my family and everyone adores him. My mum loves him, he is in group chats with my dad,’ Tammy said.

‘My family and friends love him! My friends are all strict with who they like, so it is really, really nice!’ she said.

Grayson is the latest in a string of high-profile romances for Tammy, who previously enjoyed a short-lived interstate relationship with footy star Bailey Smith.

She was also married to Love Island Australia star Matt Zukowski from November 2024 until June 2025, with the pair confirming they had parted ways after seven months of marriage.

Gov. Kathy Hochul Stumps With Mamdani and AOC at Bills Watch Party

0

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appeared alongside Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at a Buffalo Bills watch party in Queens on Sunday, using the final weekend of her campaign to emphasize that the two prominent progressives “want to be with me.”

Smiling as she campaigned with the pair at Murphy’s Sports Bar in Astoria, Hochul rejected the idea that their support could alienate moderate voters before Tuesday’s gubernatorial election. Both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez are viewed as controversial figures on the political left.

“They want to support me and I’m grateful to have such a broad base of individuals with different perspectives who are joining our coalition to make sure Democrats win big,” Hochul told reporters.

The two Democratic socialists left the bar about 20 minutes before the incumbent governor and did not comment. Customers leaving the establishment said it appeared to be half empty while the politicians were there.

“This is the place we come for the games, but this… no,” said customer Jose Rodriguez Jr., 39.

Rodriguez and his girlfriend walked out as the politicians continued their campaign stop.

“We’re just going to go find some other place where we can watch the game,” Rodriguez said.

Hochul, who is widely expected to defeat Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, on Tuesday, said she was approaching the final days of the race with the utmost seriousness as she departed the sports bar.

“I’m taking this so seriously because what we do here in New York will have an effect on the future of this country,” the governor said.

She also expressed hope that Democrats could achieve a sweep ahead of the midterm elections and “start taking back our country.”

“If we make Hakeem Jeffries our speaker, all of a sudden we can just put up a firewall up there and stop the insanity and start taking back our country,” Hochul said.

The governor’s race has drawn national attention, including criticism from President Trump, who was raised in Queens and called Hochul “the worst governor in the history of New York State.”

“She’s been a disaster, and I can tell you that Bruce has been a friend of mine for a long time,” Trump said at a Saturday rally, where he urged New Yorkers to support the Republican challenger.
