Officer Punished After Pulling Gun on Coworker Over Microwaved Fish

A South Carolina detective who drew his gun during a dispute over a colleague heating fish in the office microwave is now stepping away from police work entirely.

Michael DeBiase pleaded guilty Friday to public disorderly conduct stemming from the incident at the Myrtle Beach Police Department this spring, The Smoking Gun reported.

As part of the plea agreement, DeBiase must “surrender his … police certification and never seek reinstatement,” according to court documents he signed.

An arrest warrant states that the 46-year-old officer confronted an unnamed colleague for “warming up fish in the microwave,” creating “an odor in the office.”

During the confrontation, “Detective DeBiase drew and pointed his department issued handgun” at the colleague, court documents say.

DeBiase was initially charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at another person, and his standing with the department quickly deteriorated.

“He was placed on administrative leave immediately following the incident while investigations were conducted by the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division,” the department said in a statement released in June.

The court documents do not state whether DeBiase’s gun was loaded or identify the type of fish his colleague was reheating.

A previous Post report on return-to-office etiquette listed heating fish in a break room as one of the most serious workplace food faux pas.

Democrat Who Lost Michigan Senate Primary Backs Republican in General Election

0

Haley Stevens, who previously challenged Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the U.S. Senate primary, caught party leaders off guard Sunday by backing Republican Mike Rogers in the general election. Her endorsement followed a decision to remove her from a joint event with El-Sayed, who was campaigning for the Michigan seat, as tensions within the Democratic Party intensified. The race could play a role in determining control of Congress.

President Donald Trump is spending the closing stretch of a turbulent midterm campaign at rallies in Iowa and Kansas, states he has won comfortably in previous elections. His schedule reflects the defensive strategy Republicans are adopting as voters prepare to judge his second term at the ballot box.

A federal judge on Sunday rejected a Justice Department lawsuit that sought to prevent certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate election if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan is defeated. The case followed a New York Times report that Democratic candidate Mary Peltola’s campaign appeared to have helped recruit Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher with the same name as the incumbent, to enter the race.

The Latest:

Justice Department to appeal ruling rejecting challenge to Alaska Senate race

The Justice Department has notified the court that it will appeal the decision dismissing its effort to challenge certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate election if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan loses.

“Alaskan voters deserve a fair election, not to be misled in an attempt to rig outcomes,” a department spokesperson said in a statement.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason said the administration’s requested remedy was “infeasible,” noting that many Alaskans had already submitted their ballots.

Sullivan, a Trump ally, is competing against former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola in one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate contests. The ranked-choice election Tuesday also features a retired teacher who has the same name as the incumbent.

Republicans say the race carries significant stakes and fear some voters could be confused and mistakenly select the wrong candidate named Sullivan.

The ballot lists “Dan S. Sullivan” as a “registered Republican” and the “incumbent.” “Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.” appears without a party designation.

Wisconsin Republican governor candidate intensifies final appeal to voters

Tom Tiffany, who has served in Congress for the past six years, told supporters after a Sunday rally in heavily Democratic Madison that he sensed the race was moving in his direction.

“This is a turnout election,” Tiffany told the crowd. “That is how we are going to win.”

Tiffany is facing Democrat David Crowley with Election Day just ahead.

“I can feel it out there,” Tiffany said. “People are going to show up Tuesday. Be part of this movement.”

The two candidates are spending the final two days before the election campaigning throughout Wisconsin alongside high-profile supporters.

At Tiffany’s Madison event, he was joined by U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson.

Crowley is scheduled to campaign Sunday with Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, followed by an appearance Monday with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Kansas attorney general directs Democratic PAC to end $5 gift-card offer to voters

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach says in a cease-and-desist letter to the Bluestem Fund that offering anything of value in exchange for voting violates both federal and state law.

He directed the group to preserve all records and communications related to its canvassing activities. Kobach on Saturday said a voter in Wichita alerted his office to the “brazen” offer of a gift card.

The PAC’s chair, Topeka attorney L.J. Leatherman, did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Kobach is an ally of President Donald Trump and served as vice chair of Trump’s short lived commission on election fraud in 2017.

In September, Kobach sent a similar letter to a League of Women Voters chapter in northeast Kansas after it offered $5 gift cards to students who registered to vote. The league chapter said it was cooperating with Kobach’s inquiry and is committed to complying with all laws.

Abdul El-Sayed’s Democratic rival, Haley Stevens, endorses GOP’s Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race

Democrat Haley Stevens says she’s voting for Mike Rogers for Senate in Michigan over her former primary opponent Abdul El-Sayed.

Stevens, standing alongside Rogers, said she’d be voting for other Democrats but would not cast her ballot for El-Sayed, who defeated her in an August primary.

“It is more a statement about standing together against hate and the future of this state and this country, than it is anything else,” she said.

Rogers said he was honored to have Stevens’ vote.

Senate Democratic leader calls fellow Democrat Haley Stevens’ endorsement of Rogers ‘betrayal’

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has denounced Haley Stevens’ endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race.

“This is a despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens,” Schumer wrote in a social media post of the step taken by his fellow Democrat, Stevens.

Schumer, who had backed Stevens in the primary, reiterated the party’s support for Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated her in August.

Stevens announced her endorsement of Rogers earlier Sunday in the general election contest against El_Sayed. El-Sayed dismissed it, saying he’s worried about voters’ concerns, not intraparty drama.

Abdul El-Sayed dismisses Stevens’ endorsement of GOP’s Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race

Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed batted away news that his former primary opponent Haley Stevens said she’s backing Rogers in the Michigan contest.

“At the end of the day I actually don’t think about Haley Stevens,” he said, standing alongside Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland.

He added: “Rather than focus on a distraction about who said what to whom, where they went, I’ve been consistent. I want to get money out of politics. I want to put money back in pockets. I want Medicare for all.”

His comments came shortly after his primary opponent and fellow Democrat, Haley Stevens, said she was voting for Rogers.

Stevens’ split from the party comes two days before Election Day, which will determine which party controls Congress.

Judge dismisses lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska Senate race if GOP incumbent loses

A federal judge on Sunday dismissed a Justice Department lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan loses.

The lawsuit, filed less than two weeks before the election and with early voting underway, called for an investigation into whether votes for retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan were intended for the senator. The state said the case lacked merit and argued there would be no way to determine that without violating voter privacy.

U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason wrote in the order that the relief the United States seeks is “infeasible” because many voters have already cast their ballots. She said the cast ballots have been mixed together to the point where they cannot be matched to specific voters.

“More fundamentally, the United States provides no workable plan as to how it proposes to segregate ballots cast for Daniel J. Sullivan on Election Day and then conduct a court-ordered unspecified ‘investigation’ of those ballots in a manner that would preserve voter secrecy,” she wrote.

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy hospitalized after a stroke

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been hospitalized after having a stroke, his office said Sunday.

Murphy, 53, was at his son’s hockey game Saturday when he began to feel numbness in his arm. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors discovered he had had a stroke.

He was transferred to Johns Hopkins.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” according to a statement from his office.

Murphy is in his third term in the Senate. He previously served in the House for three terms.

Georgia governor candidates attend separate church services on final Sunday of campaign

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms went to her home congregation in Atlanta before voter turnout rallies later Sunday in middle Georgia as she tries to achieve something that’s never happened: a Black woman being elected governor in the U.S.

Bottoms told her fellow members at Ben Hill United Methodist Church that her mother, a member of the church, had been “aggressive” about making sure she was back in the church before Tuesday.

Bottoms says it’s the place where she was married and had her children baptized, telling the congregation from the pulpit that the church is “always home.”

Meanwhile, Republican Rick Jackson dropped in at the north Georgia evangelical megachurch led by one of Trump’s spiritual advisers, Pastor Jentezen Franklin. Jackson did not speak at Free Chapel church in Gainesville but stood and waved as Franklin gave him an effusive welcome.

Georgia’s early vote totals please Democrats, leave Republicans nervous

Some 2.8 million early ballots were cast in Georgia, and that’s a midterm election record.

Democrats are encouraged because almost a third of the early ballots were cast by Black voters, several percentage points more than in previous elections. Latino turnout, a small slice of Georgia’s electorate, also is higher. The early electorate is also several points less white than in 2024, when Trump carried the state, and 2022, when Republican Gov. Brian Kemp was reelected.

Georgia’s metro areas, which lean Democratic, also have posted higher early turnout compared to the 2022 midterms, while most rural counties, which skew Republican, are down.

And analyses show the early vote uptick is not strictly from usual Election Day voters shifting to early ballots.

It’s enough that Kemp has cut social media videos urging Republicans to vote Tuesday and reminding them that he first won in 2018 by less than 55,000 votes, or 1.4 percentage points.

Trump supporters at Iowa rally await the president’s arrival

Dubuque, Iowa, resident Jon Lutz watches videos of President Donald Trump all the time. But Sunday afternoon’s rally will be the first time Lutz sees the man in person.

The 60-year-old civil engineer plans to cast his ballot Tuesday and said he’s a straight-ticket Republican voter.

Lutz said Trump has already accomplished so much in the first two years of his second term, and he wants to see Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate to allow his agenda to continue.

“He’s done what he’s said he’s going to do,” Lutz said. “I want him to keep going.”

Veterinarian Wendy Kuenzler, a 44-year-old from Burlington, Iowa, voted on Saturday. On Sunday she was in the concessions line at a packed arena in Dubuque, Iowa, waiting for the start of Sunday’s rally and her first time seeing Trump in person.

Kuenzler said she felt like Iowa was at a crossroads in this competitive midterm election. In the race for U.S. Senate, Kuenzler said there was no question she was supporting Republican Ashley Hinson.

Kuenzler said Trump isn’t the reason gas and grocery prices are still high, adding: “He’s on the path to correcting it.”

Barack Obama endorses Charles Booker in race for Kentucky Senate seat

Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Charles Booker for the Kentucky U.S. Senate seat opened up by Republican Mitch McConnell’s retirement.

The two-term Democratic president said Sunday that Booker would stand up for working families.

“I’m proud to support Charles Booker for the U.S. Senate,” Obama said in a statement. “Charles cares deeply about the people of Kentucky.”

Booker, a former state legislator, is running against Republican Rep. Andy Barr.

McConnell, the former Republican leader in the Senate, is retiring after seven terms in the Senate.

A private jet carrying nine people crashed into a South Florida neighborhood Sunday afternoon, triggering a massive fireball about nine miles from Mar-a-Lago.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft went down in a residential area near Cresthaven, Florida, at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1.

“Nine people were on board,” the FAA said.

The Learjet departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.

The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate, with the NTSB leading the inquiry and providing further updates.

Emergency crews closed Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and urged people to stay away from the area.

“Aircraft Incident,” Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said on X. “Avoid the area. This will be an extended incident.”

Videos posted on social media appeared to show the aircraft descending rapidly before an explosion sent flames and thick smoke into the sky.

UNC Charlotte Student Accused of Secretly Sharing Sex Video on Frat Snapchat

0

A 19-year-old North Carolina college student is accused of secretly filming a sexual encounter with a female student and sharing the recording in a fraternity’s Snapchat group chat.

Alexander Michael Evanoff faces two felony charges—secret peeping and disclosing private images—following his Oct. 19 arrest, according to jail records reviewed by Oxygen.

What Are the Allegations Against Alexander Evanoff?

According to an affidavit obtained by Oxygen, Evanoff allegedly used his cellphone to record himself having sex with a woman in her dorm room at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte without her knowledge or consent.

After the September encounter, authorities say, Evanoff shared the recording in a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity Snapchat group chat viewed by approximately 32 members.

Police began investigating after two people who had viewed the video contacted authorities.

Authorities said Evanoff admitted recording and distributing the video without asking the woman’s permission. He also acknowledged that sharing it would embarrass and humiliate her, according to investigators.

Investigators later interviewed the woman, who told them she confronted Evanoff and asked whether posting the video had made him “appear cool,” according to the affidavit.

Evanoff reportedly answered yes and apologized, authorities said.

He was arrested Oct. 19 and released the next day after posting a $10,000 bond, WSOC-TV reported.

It’s unclear whether Evanoff has entered a plea. Oxygen said it contacted his attorney and UNC Charlotte Police but had not received an immediate response.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte Officials Say Alexander Evanoff is No Longer a Student

The university has confirmed that Evanoff is no longer enrolled as a student.

“The alleged conduct in this case, if true, is reprehensible,” Deputy Chief Communications Officer Christy Jackson said in a statement to Oxygen. “It is not what we expect or will tolerate from members of our campus community.”

Jackson added that students found to have violated the law may face criminal prosecution as well as university disciplinary action, including expulsion.

Steve Mitchell, chief executive officer of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, told Oxygen that Evanoff was not a fraternity member and had never been initiated into the organization’s North Carolina Beta Chapter.

“Upon becoming aware of the allegations involving the individual in September 2026, North Carolina Beta’s Chapter leadership took immediate action to rescind his bid for initiation,” Mitchell said. “Sigma Alpha Epsilon holds its collegiate members to high standards of conduct and accountability, and the North Carolina Beta Chapter’s leadership demonstrated those expectations through its decisive response.”

AOC Allies Question the Left’s Gentle Treatment of Zohran Mamdani, New York City Politician

0

Two New York City progressives have emerged as national political forces, but allies of one say the other has received a far more forgiving reception.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have publicly presented a united front, frequently joining forces as they build their national profiles.

Behind the scenes, however, Mamdani’s swift rise has created tensions among some Ocasio-Cortez supporters. The New York Times reported that it has “long grated on some Ocasio-Cortez allies that the new mayor seems to be given more deference from more of the base than she was ever afforded,” even though Mamdani has not won over the entire political left.

People in Ocasio-Cortez’s orbit have taken particular notice of the patience and respect progressive activists have shown Mamdani—an approach they believe the congresswoman rarely received as her own influence expanded.

The disparity has become a point of growing frustration, especially because Ocasio-Cortez faced relentless scrutiny after entering the national spotlight by defeating longtime Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley in 2018 at just 28 years old.

New York Rep. Nydia Velázquez told The Times that Ocasio-Cortez has matured since her first election, but said she would still expect the congresswoman to be “vilified” if she met with “Bloomberg or some of the other corporate type guys.”

Mamdani’s reception has underscored the contrasting standards applied to two rising figures within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. Polling has also indicated that the mayor is more popular than the congresswoman.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani speaks to media after his meeting with President Donald Trump, September 21, 2026, in New York

Mamdani, a self-described Democratic Socialist, rose rapidly from relative obscurity to City Hall with strong support from progressive and pro-Palestinian factions of the left.

His standing with some pro-Palestinian activists was tested in October, when protesters called him a “traitor” as he held a candle at a Union Square vigil commemorating the third anniversary of Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The following day, protesters confronted Mamdani as he discussed ICE’s shooting of 28-year-old Oscar Bergal, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, in Marble Hill, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan.

“Mamdani is complicit,” protesters shouted, repeatedly interrupting the mayor and making it difficult to hear his remarks.

During the event, Mamdani called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

At the same time, some of Mamdani’s supporters have questioned his repeated meetings with President Donald Trump, including their most recent encounter at Gracie Mansion in September.

Mamdani told The New York Times last month that he met with Trump “to ensure that we’re using every opportunity we have to deliver for this city.”

Despite making several calls to Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Mamdani was unable to persuade the president to release Bergal, according to the outlet.

Trump and Mamdani have maintained a complicated relationship since taking office in their respective positions.

In September, Trump criticized both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez over their conduct at a New York City ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont independent Bernie Sanders both backed Mamdani in his race for New York City mayor in 2025

Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez were caught laughing together at the 9/11 25th anniversary memorial service while the names of victims were being read out by their relatives.

The Democrats were seen bursting into laughter at the solemn Ground Zero event in lower Manhattan, at the same moment that mourners stood silently around them.

Trump described the reaction as ‘terrible,’ adding that the Ground Zero Memorial is not a place to be laughing, ‘particularly in that case.’

‘The fact that they were laughing together at a very important part of the ceremony was inappropriate,’ Trump told reporters on his way back to the US from attending the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf club on the banks of the Atlantic Ocean earlier this fall.

A relative of a victim was seen weeping on the memorial seconds before the camera cut to Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, while victims’ loved ones stood on stage reading the names of the deceased.

The moment quickly went viral across social media, with viewers commenting that their jovial reactions were ‘a slap in the face’ to victims.

Private Jet Carrying Nine People Crashes in Palm Beach

A private jet carrying nine people crashed just eight miles from Mar-a-Lago in Florida, triggering a massive fire and sending a thunderous boom across the area.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the $2 million Learjet 60 plunged 32,000 feet in about a minute. The impact sparked a fierce amber blaze, while thick smoke rose from the scorched roadside in Greenacres, Palm Beach County.

The crash left a large crater in the ground, with pieces of debris scattered across the surrounding area.

The twin-engine business jet came down near South Military Trail and Marilyn Drive at approximately 12:50 p.m. The identities of those aboard have not been released.

Flight data showed the aircraft had departed Austin, Texas, and was heading to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when its journey ended abruptly near West Palm Beach.

Donald Trump had been at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night for a Halloween party. However, he is understood to have left for Iowa before the explosion occurred.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office told the Daily Mail that it was responding to a “mass casualty aircraft-related incident,” but released no further details.

Dramatic dashcam footage recorded by drivers appeared to show the jet plunging toward the ground before erupting in a huge fireball.

The FAA said the $2 million Learjet 60 lost 32,000 feet in a minute before crashing in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, where it ignited in flames and sent plumes of smoke into the air.

Several local reports posted online described hearing a powerful boom before the ground began to shake and flames broke out.

One person said they were “lifted from the ground,” while another compared the deafening impact to the sound of a missile.

The crash occurred roughly eight miles from the President’s lavish estate and was powerful enough to bring down power lines.

Officials have not determined what caused the crash, nor have they confirmed whether anyone was injured or killed. The site is close to several businesses and mobile-home communities.

Military Trail was closed in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, with the restrictions remaining in place until further notice.

Once celebrated as Hollywood’s iconic redheaded bombshell, Ann-Margret continues to command attention six decades after reaching stardom.

The legendary 85-year-old actress was all smiles during a rare Los Angeles appearance last weekend, where she was photographed using a wheelchair.

The Viva Las Vegas star appeared to be in high spirits as she arrived at a hotel on Saturday. Staff members were seen helping her as she made her way inside.

Ann-Margret looked effortlessly glamorous in an emerald-green jacket layered over an all-black outfit as she was escorted toward the entrance.

She completed the look with oversized dark sunglasses and a silver cross necklace, while her signature auburn hair rested in soft waves around her shoulders.

The two-time Oscar nominee was later seen grinning warmly from her wheelchair as she spoke with members of her party.

In other photographs, the beloved performer could be seen standing with assistance beside a vehicle, with her wheelchair positioned close by.

Ann-Margret has only recently been seen using a wheelchair. She has also been photographed standing and walking, indicating that the aid may mainly help her travel to and from venues.

Her latest appearance follows a frightening fall at home in January that resulted in a broken elbow and required hospitalization.

“I fell the other day and so now my right elbow is broken,” the redheaded actress told Parade magazine at the time.

Even so, the Hollywood icon insisted she was not letting the accident define her, acknowledging that she had experienced plenty of falls over the years.

“That’s okay. I have fallen so many times,” she said. “I don’t intend to, but I do! What can I say?”

“I have always learned from my parents that you just get up. You just start all over again.”

Ann-Margret’s history of serious falls includes a 1972 accident in which she plunged 22 feet from a stage during a concert in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The fall left her with a broken arm, a severe concussion and multiple facial fractures, including a crushed cheekbone.

Born Ann-Margret Olsson in Sweden in 1941, she moved to the United States with her family as a child and was raised in Illinois.

Her passion for singing and dancing emerged early, eventually leading her to pursue a career in show business after attending Northwestern University.

She first attracted attention as a nightclub performer, catching the eye of legendary comedian George Burns, who helped launch her entertainment career.

By the 1960s, Ann-Margret had secured a recording contract and begun making waves in Hollywood.

The 60s’ ‘sex kitten’ initially captivated audiences with her vibrant, uninhibited dancing and magnetic screen presence but, over the decades, she successfully transformed her image into a highly respected, award-winning dramatic actress.

Dubbed the ‘Female Elvis,’ she skyrocketed to top box-office stardom with iconic roles in the musical Bye Bye Birdie and alongside Presley in Viva Las Vegas – which led to a romance between the two.

But she went on to marry her manager, Roger Smith, and they were together until his 2017 death. The couple had no children, though she was stepmother to his three offspring from a previous marriage.

Ann-Margret broke away from her ‘singing sex kitten’ persona by earning an Academy Award nomination for her raw performance in Mike Nichols’s Carnal Knowledge in 1971.

She secured a second Oscar nomination for the big-screen rock opera Tommy in 1975.

And she appeared in smash-hit comedies Grumpy Old Men in 1993 and Grumpier Old Men in 1995, starring alongside Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

Her most recent screen role was in the Hallmark movie A Holiday Spectacular.

Ann-Margret has five Golden Globe Awards, one Emmy Award, two Academy Award nominations and two Grammy Award nominations.

Incest-Bred Wolves Are Now Roaming California’s Wilderness

0

California’s wolf population is showing signs of inbreeding as isolated animals pair up to preserve their lineage.

According to California Wolf Watch, nearly one in four wolves in the state was born to sibling parents from Northern California’s Whaleback Pack.

The organization said the first confirmed inbred pack recorded in California in 2026 was the Ashpan Pack. Female wolf WHA29F, also known as CA124, was born to the Whaleback Pack in 2024. She later had five pups with WHA07M, or CA051, a black male born to the same pack in 2021.

“The second confirmed pack identified with inbreeding in California in 2026 was the Ice Cave Pack,” California Wolf Watch said.

Records from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), published under the title “California’s Known Wolves,” also document inbreeding among the state’s wolves. The agency’s data identifies the Beyem Seyo and Ashcan packs among the groups involved.

Even with inbreeding reported in roughly a quarter of California’s wolves, a state wildlife official said the trend is not currently cause for alarm.

“At this point, I would not characterize inbreeding as an immediate threat to the viability of California’s wolf population,” CDFW gray wolf expert Axel Hunnicutt told KTLA 5.

Hunnicutt noted that California’s wolves remain part of a broader western population. Wolves continue moving into the state from Oregon, where they can mate with animals from different genetic lineages. “We continue to document that gene flow annually,” she said.

Although inbreeding is uncommon among established wolf populations, it can occur in smaller groups that are geographically isolated and have fewer potential mates.

Wolves are not the only animals to experience this problem. Cheetahs, whose numbers have fallen dramatically, have also turned to inbreeding as their populations neared extinction.

“Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) have faced extinction at least two times in the past after their populations were reduced, leading to inbreeding,” National Geographic reported.

Best Celebrity Halloween Costumes From Heidi Klum’s Wild 2026 Party

0

Hollywood’s biggest stars brought their boldest looks to Heidi Klum’s iconic Halloween party on Saturday night.

The annual fright-night celebration featured daring red-carpet outfits, elaborate transformations and eye-catching celebrity tributes, as A-list guests battled to deliver the most memorable costume of the evening.

The barely-there arrivals gave photographers plenty to capture, but the spotlight was always destined to fall on one guest in particular.

Klum, who was marking the 25th anniversary of her legendary Halloween bash, lived up to her reputation with a stomach-churning transformation that was, quite literally, a bloody handful.

Model Vanessa Fuchs made one of the night’s boldest entrances, channeling Natalie Portman’s character Alice from Closer in a pink wig, purple lingerie-inspired outfit with white fringe and a dramatic white fur coat.

Haley Kalil brought comic-book glamour to the red carpet as the famously curvaceous Jessica Rabbit. Model Kim Hnizdo opted for a metallic silver corset and matching briefs, finishing the daring look with white body paint.

Even with so many elaborate costumes competing for attention, there was only ever going to be one undisputed star of the night.

Klum, who celebrated the 25th anniversary of her annual Halloween extravaganza, arrived at New York’s Cathédrale restaurant in one of her most bizarre getups yet.

The German supermodel became a gigantic, gruesome replica of her own severed left hand, complete with enormous fingers, long red nails, dangling tendons and blood dripping from her mouth.

Only her eyes and mouth were visible through the elaborate prosthetics, while assistants dressed in blood-stained hazmat suits helped bring the disturbing vision to life.

The look was masterminded by her longtime special-effects collaborator Mike Marino, with the elaborate costume taking months of planning and around four months to make.

The star later stripped away her costume’s outer layer and unveiled a second look that was just as horrific, pairing gory face prosthetics and a blonde wig with her existing set of massive, finger-like leg prosthetics.

Heidi revealed that getting into the creation took approximately five to six hours, admitting that carrying the enormous costume was particularly challenging.

Even her wedding jewelry was recreated as part of the look, with replicas of her engagement and wedding rings and the tattoo of husband Tom Kaulitz’s name on her ring finger.

The host’s children also joined the celebrations, with Leni dressing as Miss Piggy, Johan as Michael Jackson from Thriller and Lou as Starfire from Teen Titans.

Other famous faces at the bash included Paris Jackson, Questlove, Ice-T and Coco Austin, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Watkins, Madelaine Petsch and Lux Pascal.

Klum also shared her look via her Instagram, writing: ‘TALK TO THE HAND ✋ #HeidiHalloween 2026 HERE WE GO.’

And ahead of the event, which she’s been hosting since 2000, the star teased her costume on social media.

She engaged her 12.7 million followers by sharing tidbits of footage that included props covered in fake blood, and clips of her makeup team getting ready to apply special effects.

On the red carpet, a member of Klum’s entourage hilariously kept her hydrated with a syringe of liquid shot into her gaping, bloody mouth.

The model’s legs were hidden in the hand’s middle and ring fingers, while she was able to slide one arm into the thumb.

Meanwhile, her daughter Leni put on a pig nose and ears with long blond hair and a pale-pink robe to become Miss Piggy of The Muppets fame.

Lou rocked a purple superhero outfit while Johan dressed as a zombie.

Over the past few years, Klum has become known for the legendary looks that she wears during her iconic Halloween party in New York City each holiday.

Last year, Klum arrived at her party dressed as Medusa from Clash of the Titans.

In past years, Klum’s other costumes have included transforming into E.T., a peacock, an alien and Princess Fiona from Shrek.

However, her most famous costume of all might have been the one that she wore in 2022.

At the time, Klum arrived as a worm, slithering around on the floor.

She was totally transformed, and you could barely recognize that it was the supermodel underneath the thick layers.

The costume was so realistic that it instantly went viral, lighting up the internet.

To make the costume come to life, she worked with Mike Marino, owner of Prosthetic Renaissance, a special effects company that has made tons of realistic-looking Halloween costumes over the years.

Her husband, Tom Kaulitz, completed the other half of her costume as a fisherman.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the time, Klum admitted that she felt ‘claustrophobic’ while wearing the elaborate costume.

‘I was so claustrophobic in that costume,’ Klum shared.

‘It is one thing to add prosthetics to your body — but to be stuck inside the worm body and not really be able to use my arms or feet was not very comfortable,’ she said.

Joining Klum on the red carpet were Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, both of whom looked creepy as they haunting twins from Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining (1980)

Poundland Sales Soar as Discount Retailer Teeters on Brink of Collapse

0

Poundland sales are reportedly surging, even as the discount retailer’s owners move towards appointing administrators.

Investment firm Gordon Brothers, which took control of Poundland last year, has already closed more than 100 stores and two warehouses across South Yorkshire and the Midlands.

As many as 12,000 jobs may now be threatened after the budget chain approached the High Court on Thursday with notice of its intention to enter administration.

Poundland has ten days to secure a buyer. However, Gordon Brothers has come under fire after turning down a proposed takeover by Martin Property Group.

In a statement, Poundland indicated that the business could instead be split up and sold in parts. The retailer said it had received formal proposals from “several established retail operators” covering a “significant part of the business”.

The development comes despite a recent improvement in trading, with bosses describing the chain as having returned to profitability, according to The Times.

A message sent to suppliers and seen by the newspaper showed that sales climbed 8.4 per cent in the three weeks to October 18.

Sales, margins and gross profits were reportedly “running comfortably ahead of expectations”, while one source said the business was “flying”.

Sales at Poundland are reportedly soaring - despite the discount chain's owners filing a notice of intention to appoint administrators earlier this week

Poundland sales are reportedly soaring despite its owners filing a notice of intention to appoint administrators

Gordon Brothers is facing mounting scrutiny over its decision not to accept the rescue offer from Martin Group. Unions have accused the investment firm of being “determined” to allow Poundland to descend into disarray.

Negotiations broke down after Gordon Brothers insisted that the prospective buyer take on a £30 million loan inherited when the firm acquired Poundland for a nominal £1 in June 2025.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has called on Gordon Brothers to explain its decision. Speaking to the BBC, he said: “If there is a potential owner that can continue that progress, obviously that naturally sounds like the best way forward. So if that hasn’t been accepted, I want to know why that is the case.”

Poundland founder Steve Smith, who launched the business in 1990, has also criticised its current owners, accusing them of being “greedy” in a statement issued this weekend.

Mr Smith warned that a collapse could result in the loss of as many as 30,000 jobs across the wider supply chain and related businesses.

“If Gordon Brothers are being greedy then it is going to cost thousands of jobs, in the newspapers it says 12,000 jobs are at risk. My estimate is more like 30,000 jobs,” he wrote in a lengthy LinkedIn post.

“It is not just the people that work for Poundland it is also their suppliers they have thousands of suppliers, some that just serve them, therefore these suppliers will suffer or be at risk of going into administration.”

He added that taxpayers could ultimately bear the cost of supporting thousands of unemployed workers if Poundland enters administration, while liquidators would “make a lot of money”.

Mr Smith also said he had tried “several times” to contact the current owners, but claimed they had “never returned my call”.

If Poundland fails, it would be one of the biggest high street collapses since Debenhams shut its stores in 2021. The department store chain’s closure resulted in the loss of about 12,000 jobs.

The Prime Minister, whose Makerfield constituency includes a Poundland distribution centre where 270 jobs could be affected, said last month that protecting employment was a priority when questioned about the retailer’s future.

‘We want to see jobs protected. If there was a potential owner to avoid this that hasn’t been accepted, then the Business Secretary [Jonathan Reynolds] and I want to know why that is the case,’ said Andy Burnham.

In a social media post, Reform’s Robert Jenrick claimed that should the company collapse it would be an example of ‘crony capitalism’.

He said: ‘People have attacked me for taking up this fight, saying: “Businesses go under all the time, that’s just the free market”.

‘Sure, but this is crony capitalism and the 12,000 workers deserve better.’

Poundland has struggled in recent years after ‘straying from the single £1 price point that defined its core identity’ and expanding into selling clothes and frozen food, said retail expert Jonathan De Mello.

Retailers are also battling higher costs, following Government moves to hike wages and employer National Insurance contributions, while shoppers have been lured in by online giants Amazon and Temu.

Other firms thought to be hoping to buy shops include rival Poundstretcher, which is owned by US investment group Fortress, and retailers including Iceland and Lidl.

CDS Superstores, the group behind The Range, Homebase and Wilko, is also thought to be interested. The group is owned by Chris Dawson, known as Britain’s ‘Del Boy Billionaire’.

Modella Capital, which bought WH Smith on the High Street and rebranded under TG Jones, has also been rumoured to be involved in talks.

Bally Auluk, national officer for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers, said this week has been ‘incredibly distressing’ for Poundland staff and accused Gordon Brothers of attempting to ‘jeopardise their livelihoods’.

He urged its owners to ‘reconsider and to prioritise a unified buyer’.

The Daily Mail has approached Gordon Brothers and Pepco for a comment.
