Poundland Sales Soar as Discount Retailer Teeters on Brink of Collapse

0

Poundland sales are reportedly surging, even as the discount retailer’s owners move towards appointing administrators.

Investment firm Gordon Brothers, which took control of Poundland last year, has already closed more than 100 stores and two warehouses across South Yorkshire and the Midlands.

As many as 12,000 jobs may now be threatened after the budget chain approached the High Court on Thursday with notice of its intention to enter administration.

Poundland has ten days to secure a buyer. However, Gordon Brothers has come under fire after turning down a proposed takeover by Martin Property Group.

In a statement, Poundland indicated that the business could instead be split up and sold in parts. The retailer said it had received formal proposals from “several established retail operators” covering a “significant part of the business”.

The development comes despite a recent improvement in trading, with bosses describing the chain as having returned to profitability, according to The Times.

A message sent to suppliers and seen by the newspaper showed that sales climbed 8.4 per cent in the three weeks to October 18.

Sales, margins and gross profits were reportedly “running comfortably ahead of expectations”, while one source said the business was “flying”.

Sales at Poundland are reportedly soaring - despite the discount chain's owners filing a notice of intention to appoint administrators earlier this week

Gordon Brothers is facing mounting scrutiny over its decision not to accept the rescue offer from Martin Group. Unions have accused the investment firm of being “determined” to allow Poundland to descend into disarray.

Negotiations broke down after Gordon Brothers insisted that the prospective buyer take on a £30 million loan inherited when the firm acquired Poundland for a nominal £1 in June 2025.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has called on Gordon Brothers to explain its decision. Speaking to the BBC, he said: “If there is a potential owner that can continue that progress, obviously that naturally sounds like the best way forward. So if that hasn’t been accepted, I want to know why that is the case.”

Poundland founder Steve Smith, who launched the business in 1990, has also criticised its current owners, accusing them of being “greedy” in a statement issued this weekend.

Mr Smith warned that a collapse could result in the loss of as many as 30,000 jobs across the wider supply chain and related businesses.

“If Gordon Brothers are being greedy then it is going to cost thousands of jobs, in the newspapers it says 12,000 jobs are at risk. My estimate is more like 30,000 jobs,” he wrote in a lengthy LinkedIn post.

“It is not just the people that work for Poundland it is also their suppliers they have thousands of suppliers, some that just serve them, therefore these suppliers will suffer or be at risk of going into administration.”

He added that taxpayers could ultimately bear the cost of supporting thousands of unemployed workers if Poundland enters administration, while liquidators would “make a lot of money”.

Mr Smith also said he had tried “several times” to contact the current owners, but claimed they had “never returned my call”.

If Poundland fails, it would be one of the biggest high street collapses since Debenhams shut its stores in 2021. The department store chain’s closure resulted in the loss of about 12,000 jobs.

The Prime Minister, whose Makerfield constituency includes a Poundland distribution centre where 270 jobs could be affected, said last month that protecting employment was a priority when questioned about the retailer’s future.

‘We want to see jobs protected. If there was a potential owner to avoid this that hasn’t been accepted, then the Business Secretary [Jonathan Reynolds] and I want to know why that is the case,’ said Andy Burnham.

In a social media post, Reform’s Robert Jenrick claimed that should the company collapse it would be an example of ‘crony capitalism’.

He said: ‘People have attacked me for taking up this fight, saying: “Businesses go under all the time, that’s just the free market”.

‘Sure, but this is crony capitalism and the 12,000 workers deserve better.’

Poundland has struggled in recent years after ‘straying from the single £1 price point that defined its core identity’ and expanding into selling clothes and frozen food, said retail expert Jonathan De Mello.

Retailers are also battling higher costs, following Government moves to hike wages and employer National Insurance contributions, while shoppers have been lured in by online giants Amazon and Temu.

Other firms thought to be hoping to buy shops include rival Poundstretcher, which is owned by US investment group Fortress, and retailers including Iceland and Lidl.

CDS Superstores, the group behind The Range, Homebase and Wilko, is also thought to be interested. The group is owned by Chris Dawson, known as Britain’s ‘Del Boy Billionaire’.

Modella Capital, which bought WH Smith on the High Street and rebranded under TG Jones, has also been rumoured to be involved in talks.

Bally Auluk, national officer for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers, said this week has been ‘incredibly distressing’ for Poundland staff and accused Gordon Brothers of attempting to ‘jeopardise their livelihoods’.

He urged its owners to ‘reconsider and to prioritise a unified buyer’.

The Daily Mail has approached Gordon Brothers and Pepco for a comment.

Israel Accuses SNP MP and Green MSP of Social Media Stunt

0

A delegation that included Scottish politicians was refused entry to the West Bank after Israeli officials accused its members of planning “intentional provocation for social media clout” in areas experiencing heightened tensions.

SNP MP Lara Bird and Green MSP Kate Nevens were among those turned away by Israeli border officials as they attempted to enter the territory.

The Israeli Embassy in the UK, which said last week that the group had failed to co-operate and supplied false information, has now given the Mail further details about the decision to deny them entry.

The embassy said the delegation had misrepresented its plans, with the itinerary submitted before the trip differing from the activities the group actually intended to undertake. It also raised concerns that members planned to heighten tensions through social media footage.

Progressive International, which organised the delegation, again declined yesterday to say whether public money had been used for the cancelled trip. It said, however, that participants would make parliamentary declarations in the normal way.

An SNP source said Progressive International had paid for Ms Bird’s entire trip and that no public funds had been used.

Green MSP Kate Nevens was also in the group, which came in for fierce criticism

A spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in the UK said: “The group, which included MPs and an MSP, did not coordinate its visit in advance and, upon arriving at the border, provided misleading information about the purpose of the trip.

“Routine questioning by border agents revealed that the itinerary initially provided did not reflect the group’s actual plans, which included political activities and intentional provocation for social media clout. The group was therefore refused entry to Israel.

“Israel welcomes dialogue, open communication and constructive engagement. However, such engagement must be based on honesty and transparency, rather than misrepresentation. Like any sovereign state, Israel has the right and responsibility to verify the identity, intentions and activities of people seeking to enter its territory, and to refuse entry when there are reasonable grounds to do so.

“It is therefore misleading to describe this incident as an arbitrary attempt to silence foreign politicians or stop them from hearing different perspectives. The issue was not their political views, but the lack of transparency surrounding the visit and the discrepancies between the purpose initially declared and the activities the group intended to carry out.”

It is understood that the itinerary submitted to Israeli authorities initially indicated that the delegation would be based mainly in the Jerusalem area. Officials later learned that the group intended to visit areas of heightened tension, including olive farms.

Earlier last month, New York Democratic congressional nominee Brad Lander was among those detained after working with olive harvest groups in the West Bank in an incident described as a “calculated political stunt”.

Ms Bird, who was elected earlier this year for the Arbroath and Broughty Ferry constituency, said on social media that she had intended to “stand alongside Palestinians being attacked for harvesting olives on their own land”. She said the group had been turned away “with no reason given”.

A spokesman for Progressive International said: “Israeli authorities prevented the delegation from bearing witness to its occupation of the West Bank.

“The claim that ‘Israel welcomes dialogue, open communication and constructive engagement’ is laughable when it denies access to international observers to its ethnic cleansing of the West Bank and genocide in Gaza.”

Progressive International declined to confirm whether it had covered the delegation’s travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses, saying only that delegates would make declarations to their respective parliaments in the usual manner.

However, when asked about Ms Bird’s costs, an SNP official said Progressive International had paid for the entire trip and that no public money had been spent.

Scottish Conservative deputy leader Rachael Hamilton last week accused Ms Bird and Ms Nevens of “political grandstanding”. She said their “posturing” was “an insult to their constituents, who expect their elected representatives to be doing their job at home”.

Reform MSP Angela Ross also condemned ‘performative grandstanding’ and ‘misplaced priorities’.

The Scottish Greens have been asked for comment.

Liverpool vs Arsenal Live: Premier League Updates and News

0

Liverpool’s performance is not easy to assess.

On paper, the statistics make uncomfortable reading for the Reds. Most notably, Andoni Iraola’s side failed to register a single shot on target.

However, anyone who watched the match will have seen a very different Liverpool, particularly during the first half. Their attacking play created constant problems and they repeatedly unsettled Arsenal.

The major issue was a lack of quality in the final third.

Liverpool produced a series of promising attacks, yet each one appeared to break down at the decisive moment. Bradley Barcola was among those guilty of failing to complete a dangerous move.

That has been the defining issue of Liverpool’s season so far. Despite possessing a formidable attacking threat, they have scored just 11 goals in nine Premier League matches.

If they can sharpen their finishing, Liverpool have the potential to climb the table rapidly.

Even so, Iraola and his players can take plenty of encouragement from the performance.

NYC Jogger Stabbed in Neck While Heading to Meet Parents as Chilling Details Emerge

0

The 28-year-old jogger brutally stabbed on a Brooklyn promenade Friday night had spoken with her father just minutes earlier, law-enforcement sources told The Post, offering new and unsettling details in the still-baffling case.

Katie Suarez, a bank teller who has been declared brain dead and remains on life support at NYU Langone Hospital following the apparent random attack, initially met her mother shortly after leaving work at about 6:30 p.m., sources said.

The two met near the TD Bank branch where Suarez worked, in the Bay Parkway shopping plaza in Gravesend. Sources said the meeting was a family routine after Suarez finished her shift. Her father typically joined them, but he was running late that evening.

Suarez had changed out of her bank uniform and into running clothes. She gave her work clothes to her mother to hold, then set off alone along the Belt Parkway, heading west toward the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, sources said.

The path begins at Bay Parkway and runs to 14th Avenue and Bay 8th Street, according to sources.

Suarez’s father eventually joined her mother. At about 8 p.m., he called their daughter — a Brooklyn College Kingborough Community College graduate and native of El Salvador, according to her LinkedIn profile — to discuss where they would meet, sources said.

He told Suarez that he and her mother were still near her workplace and asked where she was, sources said.

Suarez replied that she was roughly a half-mile away, or about a five-minute jog for her. Sources said nothing seemed unusual during the conversation.

When Suarez failed to arrive at the agreed meeting place a short time later, her father called again. This time, she did not answer, sources said.

Her parents split up to search for her. The father ultimately found Suarez near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway, stabbed twice in the neck — once on each side. He frantically asked a passer-by to call 911, sources said.

Investigators believe the stabbing was random. Sources said there was no indication of a sex-crime motive or robbery, noting that Suarez’s pink cellphone and jewelry were still in her possession.

Despite her injuries, Suarez managed to run approximately 100 feet before collapsing, sources said.

Images from the bloody scene showed blood spattered across a nearby guardrail.

“It’s very sad,” a neighbor said Saturday. “I’m sad for everybody, but this is close. It’s too much right now. It’s a mad world.”

Suarez had worked as a teller at the bank branch for more than five years, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Sources said Suarez frequently jogged along the path, which offers sweeping views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Staten Island.

The waterfront route is popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and fishermen.

Police have launched a manhunt for the attacker.

Suarez’s family declined to comment Sunday at their Brooklyn home, where a Salvadoran flag was visible in the window.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville saw at least three separate shootings today, leaving two people dead. The incidents followed a shooting last night that injured a man at Majestic Oaks.

A male victim was shot at Majestic Oaks, located at 5800 SW 20th Avenue, on the previous night. Then, at approximately 4 a.m., two people were killed in a shooting reported in the 1100 block of West University Avenue.

Officers were called to Gardenia Gardens, at 1723 NE 8th Avenue, around 6:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Investigators recovered shell casings and found bullet damage to multiple vehicles and buildings. No injuries were reported, and authorities said no casings were located inside any apartments.

Later, at about 11:45 a.m., police responded to a reported drive-by shooting in the 800 block of NE 24th Street. Witnesses told officers that at least two people inside a vehicle fired several rounds at a home. Residents then went outside and returned fire. Investigators recovered some shell casings, but no injuries were reported.

Trevez McRae

Trevez Ravell McRae, 29, was arrested this morning on charges of two counts of first-degree homicide, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting an officer without violence. This article will be updated when the arrest report is obtained. McRae was also arrested in 2024 after officers found two handguns—one equipped with a Glock switch—in the glove compartment of a vehicle he was driving. He denied owning the weapons, and the firearm charges were later dropped. McRae remains on probation in that case for fleeing from law enforcement.

Shootings Near 3 College Communities Kill 1 and Injure at Least 21

Shootings at crowded gatherings in three college communities over the weekend left one person dead and at least 21 others injured, authorities said.

Police in Indiana, Delaware and Alabama are investigating separate incidents linked to large parties and events near college campuses, according to law enforcement agencies and university officials.

Seven people were hospitalized in Bloomington, Indiana, during Indiana University’s homecoming weekend. In Newark, Delaware, at least six people were reportedly hospitalized after a shooting near the University of Delaware. And in Birmingham, Alabama, gunfire near Legion Field following the Magic City Classic football game killed one person and wounded eight others.

In Bloomington, officers were monitoring a large crowd near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street when they heard gunshots at about 1:30 a.m. ET, police said. Officers then saw a man carrying a firearm flee the area.

The man was arrested near Dunn Meadow. Police recovered a gun and shell casings, but said they have not determined whether the suspect fired any of the shots.

No deaths were reported in Bloomington, and investigators said they were still trying to determine whether anyone else had been injured.

A confrontation in the crowd may have occurred before the gunfire, police said. Indiana University police and Indiana State Police also responded to the scene.

A separate shooting Saturday night in Newark, Delaware, unsettled the University of Delaware community.

“We are deeply concerned about the shooting on Main Street Saturday night, which has impacted our entire community,” Peter Bothum, the university’s director of media relations, told News Media in a statement. “We are grateful to the Newark Police Department, which is leading the investigation. We will continue to communicate confirmed information, which will be shared on a dedicated alerts page (udel.edu/about/alerts) and updated as we learn more.”

University President Laura Carlson said those wounded were receiving medical care and expressed gratitude to Newark police, campus officers and other first responders who treated victims at the scene.

“I am writing to you about the shooting last night in Newark on Main Street, although it is difficult to know what to say when violence like this erupts in our community,” she wrote in an email to the school community.

“We are all impacted,” she added. “I ask that you keep the victims in your thoughts and hearts as they receive care. Please also recognize the impact and toll on our students and community members who were on Main Street last night and witnessed this violence.”

The university did not release a confirmed victim count or say whether anyone had died. However, a report said at least six people were hospitalized. Newark police are leading the investigation, while the university directed students and employees to its alerts page for verified updates.

In Birmingham, Alabama, nine people suffered gunshot wounds shortly after 7:50 p.m. ET Saturday in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West, police said. The shooting occurred near Legion Field after the Magic City Classic football game; one victim died and eight others were injured.

One of the wounded victims was in critical condition, while the other seven were listed as stable, authorities said.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most fans and families had already left the stadium grounds when the shooting occurred nearby, where vendors had gathered along Graymont Avenue.

“I’m very grateful that more people weren’t injured,” Pickett said.

Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman said one person had been detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. Investigators also recovered and secured “multiple weapons,” Freeman said.

Alabama State and Alabama A&M are historically Black universities and longtime rivals. Their annual matchup has been played for more than a century, and nearly 70,000 fans attended Saturday’s game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28. The Magic City Classic is among the biggest-attended games in the division of college football played by the two schools.

The Magic City Classic has such a deep history that Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr., a former NFL linebacker and alumnus of the school, proposed creating a Hall of Fame for the game.

In addition to the shootings near campuses, police in Dallas say four people are dead and 15 are injured following three separate shootings in a Dallas neighborhood. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said police are still trying to determine if the shootings were related or what led to them. Comeaux said some arrests were made, but he did not specify how many or what charges were involved.

“This is a really big scene. It’s spread out,” Comeaux said. “We are interviewing some individuals right now that we have arrested, still trying to figure out exactly how it ties into all the shootings out here.”

In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds from a shooting that happened early Sunday. No arrests have been made, police said in a news release. A preliminary investigation indicates an altercation preceded the shooting.

JD Vance Criticized Over Halloween Costume as Critics Say He’ll ‘Never Be President’

0

Vice President JD Vance has drawn heavy criticism online after sharing a Halloween video featuring himself and his infant son Alec, the newest member of the family.

In the social media clip, the 41-year-old politician appeared as Albus Dumbledore, the Hogwarts headmaster from the Harry Potter series. Wearing a flowing robe and a long gray-haired wig, Vance held Alec in his arms.

“Hey guys, Vice President Dumbledore here with little Dobby the Elf,” Vance said to the camera. “Wishing you a Happy Halloween. Have fun, be safe, eat a lot of candy.”

Alec, who was born in July, wore a knitted cap featuring long elf ears inspired by Dobby, the beloved house elf from the wizarding franchise.

The playful Halloween message, however, quickly became the subject of online ridicule, with some voters reacting harshly to the vice president’s costume video.

“Holy s***. This dude will never be president,” one social media user wrote. Another posted that “JD Vance literally just keeps hitting all new lows.”

The backlash arrived as Vance’s Republican allies face the possibility of losing ground in both chambers of Congress, adding a political edge to what was intended as a lighthearted family post.

Vance’s Halloween greeting was shared only days before the November midterm elections, with polls suggesting a difficult night could be ahead for the GOP.

The criticism over the Halloween post follows a series of difficult public appearances for Vance, who has been a prominent figure on the campaign trail.

Just one week earlier, he faced backlash during a CNN town hall in Ohio, where critics accused him of being insensitive after he joked while responding to a young woman’s question about rising prices and the struggle to afford everyday life.

Vance initially thanked the woman for raising the issue and began counting before shifting the discussion elsewhere. He said he had taken four or five questions that evening but had “only been asked one question about Husted’s a**,” adding that it had come from Primetime host Jesse Watters.

The remarks prompted sarcastic responses on X, including comments such as “We can’t afford a home” and “Durr John Husted’s a** am I right guys?” Another user declared, “JD Vance is the worst politician ever.”

Vance eventually addressed the woman’s question, acknowledging that Republicans have not devoted enough attention to affordability for younger Americans, while presenting himself as an exception within the party.

The cost of living has emerged as a leading concern for voters, even as Trump has used the final stretch of the campaign to dismiss the affordability crisis as a “hoax.”

The Vance family’s full Halloween reveal featured a cast of wizarding-world characters, including Second Lady Usha Vance in the signature sorting hat and eldest son Ewan dressed as Harry Potter.

Their other children, Vivek and Mirabel, joined in as a spider and a dragon, respectively.

Vance had previously announced the Harry Potter theme, saying the children were fans of the franchise, according to the Economic Times.

Some users online used Vance’s Dumbledore wig to rehash other moments where he was seen wearing fake hair on top of his head.

‘Not the first time this weirdo has put on a wig,’ another user quipped.

Others commented recalling a costume Vance wore years ago, as he was seen in a blonde wig in a resurfaced photo.

‘OMG this reminds me of you in a dress at college with a wig,’ one user wrote.

‘Diva sure loves a wig,’ another said.

‘Any excuse to wear a wig,’ a third commented.

‘Awww your wish came true you get to dress up like a woman again,’ another comment read.

Others jumped to the Vice President’s defense, pointing out that Vance is still just a father enjoying Halloween with his child.

‘Do you know how many US dads do this exact same thing because….. they are f***ing dads? STFU,’ a user fumed.

‘Did you know October 31st is usually known as a fun holiday called Halloween? It’s where people dress up as things such as monsters, famous cartoons, and Harry Potter characters. It’s fun, you should learn more,’ another sarcastically quipped.

‘Happy Halloween to you and your family, Mr. Vice President! Great costumes. Kids grow up fast, so enjoy every minute of it,’ a third comment said.

‘Vice President Dumbledore and baby Dobby is the most wholesome thing on the timeline today,’ another added.

Some focused instead on Vance’s newborn Alec, as one comment read: ‘Politics aside, that baby is ridiculously cute.’

‘Baby is so cute! I know you’re happy they let you wear your wig and you pretty little dress today,’ one user said.

‘This is so sweet,’ another wrote.

Usha and JD first announced that they were expecting their fourth child in January.

The last time an incumbent Second Family added a newborn to their ranks was in 1870, when Schuyler Colfax, VP to Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen had a son.

Vance revealed in his memoir Communion this year that the couple had decided against more children because of the pressures of public life, until the assassination of his close friend Charlie Kirk last fall changed Usha’s mind.

‘Something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. One life was stolen from us, but another was given,’ he wrote.

Usha has said Erika Kirk’s regret about not having more children with her murdered husband was ‘very powerful’ but not the deciding factor.

‘I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility,’ she told CBS Sunday Morning.

Martha Stewart Addresses Backlash Over Homeless Costume, No Apology

Martha Stewart has responded to criticism over her Halloween costume, which portrayed a person experiencing homelessness.

The lifestyle entrepreneur, who later removed the image, said in a statement to Page Six on Sunday that she was saddened the costume had caused offense. “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” she said.

Stewart added that homelessness remains “one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises.” She said the issue is deeply important to her and pointed to the considerable time and resources she has devoted to charities working to address it.

She also emphasized that she remains “committed to continuing to make a difference.”

Stewart described Halloween as one of her favorite times of the year, noting that she has spent decades helping audiences celebrate through festive recipes, creative craft projects and entertaining advice.

Her statement came after she posted a photograph of herself in torn clothing, with dirt smeared across her face, before deleting the image.

In the picture, Stewart held a sign bearing the message, “I am hungry. Help me.”

The controversial image appeared among a series of photographs promoting candles from the lifestyle brand associated with the television personality.

The post drew sharp reactions on Reddit, where multiple users criticized the idea. One described the costume as “offensive” and “out of touch.”

Stewart’s Halloween celebrations also included a throwback image of herself dressed as a ghostly horsewoman in 2009.

The collection featured additional costume memories, including her appearance as a surfer at Bette Midler’s 1998 Hulaween gala and a comic book-inspired character from 2017.

Earlier in the month, Stewart shared another Halloween-themed Instagram post showing herself in a dark wig and costume while preparing white chocolate ghosts.

She also posted a video montage highlighting years of Halloween costumes, cooking projects and crafts. “When someone asks if I like Halloween,” she wrote in the caption.

Her seasonal content included several dessert ideas for followers, among them an ice cream pie decorated with a spooky graveyard theme.

Stewart has also previously attracted attention for marking Halloween alongside her longtime friend and collaborator, Snoop Dogg.
