The body of a 68-year-old Kansas woman who depended on oxygen was found inside a suitcase outside a Wichita fire station, just hours after her family reported her missing.

Lorretta M. Moody was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wichita Fire Station 22. Police are investigating the death as a homicide, according to The Wichita Eagle.

Authorities said two people brought Moody’s body to the station, but have not identified them or explained how they came to have the body or why it had been placed in a suitcase, records obtained by the outlet show.

In a Facebook post, Moody’s family said she had significant difficulty walking and was expected to use supplemental oxygen around the clock.

Family members reported Moody missing to the Wichita Police Department shortly after 1:30 a.m., spokesperson Andrew Ford told the outlet.

At the time she disappeared, relatives said Moody was not using her walker, receiving supplemental oxygen or taking her daily medication.

Police received the missing-person report that morning, following standard procedures for people who are not typically reported missing, including elderly individuals, autistic people and children.

Moody was described as petite, standing 4 feet 11 inches tall—or “a little shorter”—and weighing “maybe 70 pounds or less.”

Later that night, two unidentified people brought the suitcase containing Moody’s body to the fire station, where it was discovered.

The station is south of Pawnee on Hydraulic.

When asked whether the pair could be connected to Moody’s death, spokesperson Andrew Ford said they were only “people we are talking to.”

“We’re not calling them persons of interest; they’re not suspects,” Ford told the Wichita Eagle. “They’re just people we’re talking to.”

Video from the scene showed police lights flashing around the fire station as investigators worked to determine what happened.

“Investigators are continuing to interview individuals, review evidence, and work to establish a complete timeline of events,” the police department said, according to the Fresno Bee.

According to a missing-person report obtained by The Wichita Times, Moody was last seen in the 2400 block of South Mosley.

The location was just blocks from 2135 S Mosley, the home Moody reportedly owned with a man named Robert Henderson.

But the property was sold to Rental Sales Remodeling LLC at a tax sale last year, according to an eviction petition filed against Moody and Henderson in March by the property’s owners.

Documents filed with the Kansas Secretary of State’s office list Victor and Bounleng Kammavongsa and Phoukhong Phetkhamchanh as the owners of Rental Sales Remodeling.

It is unclear where Moody had been living since the eviction proceedings began.

Police said there was no apparent threat to the public.

Family members have since taken to Facebook to mourn Moody’s sudden and disturbing death, including her sister.

‘Can’t put into words how much I miss my sister over a very cruel death. My heart is broken. Rest high, my beautiful angel. We will get justice for you,’ she wrote in an emotional tribute.

Moody’s granddaughter, Angelyna Moody-Fletcher, wrote: ‘Trying to make sense of the senseless. I’ll miss our conversations every single day. I’ll miss how you’d call me at random times and we’d talk on the phone for hours.’

‘I only hope you truly know how cherished and loved you were by us all Nama. I will never stop talking about you. I will never stop fighting for you. I don’t care what it takes,’ she added.

The investigation remains ongoing. 

Australians are expected to live into their mid-to-late 80s within the next few generations, but achieving healthier longer lives will depend on getting the nation’s health policies right.

Treasury’s latest Intergenerational Report, due to be released in full on Monday, will examine how government decisions could shape Australia over the next 40 years.

An extract published on Sunday projected that female life expectancy at birth would approach 90 by 2065/66, compared with about 86 years today.

For men, life expectancy is forecast to climb from 82 years currently to 86 over the same period.

If those forecasts are realised, Australia will retain its position among the countries with the world’s highest life expectancies.

Australian Medical Association president Danielle McMullen described the projected increase as evidence of policy success, while cautioning that longer lives must also be healthier ones.

“Over the last few generations we’re living longer, but we’re also living more years in ill health with chronic disease or mental illness,” she told ABC News on Sunday.

“That’s certainly something as doctors we would want to turn around and make sure people are staying healthy as well as living longer lives.”

Dr McMullen said Australia needed to place greater emphasis on preventive care, arguing that regular contact with doctors earlier in life could help limit chronic illness in later years.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the report strengthened the case for continued investment in Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and the expansion of urgent care clinics.

At the same time, Chalmers told News24’s Sunday Agenda program that an expanding and ageing population would remain a major source of pressure on the federal budget over the long term.

“There are elements of the intergenerational report which are confronting, but it’s not a pessimistic report … because Australians are genuinely better placed and better prepared for all of this accelerating change that we are seeing,” he said.

Treasury also expects Australia’s population to be modestly smaller by the middle of the 2060s than it predicted in the 2023 Intergenerational Report.

Annual population growth is forecast to slow to 0.9 per cent over the next four decades, down from an average of 1.4 per cent over the previous 40 years.

The population is now projected to reach 39.3 million in 2065/66—1.8 million fewer people than the estimate published in 2023.

Treasury attributed much of the slowdown to declining fertility rates, as women continue to have fewer children.

“Almost half the decline in fertility rates is actually because fewer people are having three or more kids and what that reflects is mums having fewer kids later in life,” Chalmers said.

He said the government’s role was to make parenthood more achievable for those who wanted it, pointing to Labor policies including subsidised childcare, expanded paid parental leave and higher compulsory superannuation contributions.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said young families should be able to have confidence they could afford to have children, but the Coalition had no plans to revive the Howard and Costello-era ‘baby bonus’ policy.

Future government debt is expected to be slashed by half a trillion dollars compared to forecasts in the 2023 report, but much of the economic progress relies on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

‘Overwhelmingly, the fiscal story is a little bit better; but still, lots, lots more work to do to manage some of these pressures and risks,’ Chalmers said.

Previous Treasury advice suggested AI could provide significant productivity gains across the public and private sectors if the nation kept pace with the global shift towards the technology.

Mr Taylor said Labor would ‘cook the books’ and rely on rosy productivity assumptions to deliver better-than-expected budget forecasts.

A man accused of killing his grandmother in a stabbing in Sydney’s eastern suburbs had been taking the weight-loss medication Ozempic and was experiencing mental health problems, a court has heard.

Police and paramedics were called to 90-year-old Valentina Spivak’s unit on Chambers Avenue, Bondi Beach, at 5.15pm on Saturday.

Ms Spivak was found with extensive stab wounds to her torso. Attempts by police to perform CPR were unsuccessful.

Her grandson, Sergei Mitnik, was arrested at the property and taken to Surry Hills police station, where he was charged with domestic violence-related murder.

During Mitnik’s appearance in a bail court on Sunday, his solicitor said the 47-year-old had mental health issues and had been taking Ozempic.

“He states to me that Ozempic had an effect on him as a result of the medication,” solicitor Javid Faiz told the court.

Mr Faiz acknowledged the alleged offence was “extremely serious”, but said he wanted to raise his client’s mental health concerns at the earliest opportunity.

Court documents, seen by The Daily Telegraph, allege Mitnik had been estranged from his grandmother. He allegedly arrived at her home on Saturday and stayed for about an hour before strangling her and stabbing her 19 times.

He allegedly then called Triple Zero and asked for help “in having a body removed from the location”.

Mitnik allegedly told the operator his grandmother was “being not compliant and unfortunately I have to get an ambulance here”.

According to the documents, Mitnik ended the call and switched off his phone before police arrived. A knife was allegedly found at the scene.

The documents also allege Mitnik had recently spoken with his grandmother by telephone about a Jewish holiday she usually observed by giving money to relatives.

Mr Faiz told the court that Mitnik had an appointment with a psychologist about a month earlier, but it had been cancelled.

The solicitor said he may later seek to have his client transferred to a mental health facility. In the meantime, he asked for Mitnik to be assessed by two psychiatrists.

The police prosecutor said the statement of facts referred to Mitnik making “some admissions”, but contained no details about his mental condition.

Mitnik did not apply for bail, which was formally refused. The judge recommended that he receive any necessary treatment and be provided with medication.

The alleged victim was one of three women who died just hours apart in separate incidents across New South Wales.

Just hours after the death, the body of another woman in her 70s was found at Mole River in the state’s north.

Police were called to reports of a domestic violence incident in the regional district about 9.35pm.

Investigators believe a 37-year-old man entered a property and tried to steal a vehicle before assaulting the 74-year-old resident.

The younger man was arrested and police then went on to search the neighbouring property where they found the body of a woman in her 70s, who is yet to be formally identified.

Part of the house was damaged by fire, police said.

A crime scene has been established at both locations and an investigation launched with help from the homicide squad.

Earlier on Saturday, a 23-year-old woman was found with critical stab wounds inside a home in Wagga Wagga, in southwestern NSW.

Emergency services were called to the home about 11.45am but the woman died at the scene. Police were told a man left the location prior to officers’ arrival.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Wagga Wagga police station, but he was later released without charge.

About 8.30pm, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a home and taken to Wagga Wagga police station, where he remains.

All three people are believed to have known each other.
