Amber Heard Offers a Rare Glimpse Into Her New Life in Spain

0

Amber Heard may now be living largely away from the public eye, but the actress has shown that she still appreciates life’s more luxurious pleasures.

The 40-year-old offered a rare look at her private life in Spain on Wednesday, sharing an Instagram post from a dinner at a three-Michelin-starred restaurant.

In the photo, Heard browsed the wine list at El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, where the restaurant’s festival menu is priced at up to €315 (£259) per guest.

The Aquaman actress captioned the smiling image: “Now this is my kind of wine list.”

Heard was once a regular fixture among Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. In recent years, however, she has traded Los Angeles’ frenetic pace for the quieter surroundings of Madrid.

She has also embraced life as a solo parent, raising five-year-old daughter Oonagh and 17-month-old twins Ocean and Agnes, whom she welcomed “by myself and on my own terms.”

Heard is also believed to be single. Her last publicly known relationship ended in 2021, when she separated from photographer Bianca Butti after a year together.

In April 2021, the actress surprised fans by announcing the birth of Oonagh, revealing that she had kept her pregnancy private.

A source close to Heard said she had welcomed her daughter through a surrogate after being told she would not be able to carry a child herself.

At the time, she wrote: “Four years ago, I decided I wanted to have a child. I wanted to do it on my own terms.

“I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way.

“I hope we arrive at a point in which it’s normalised to not want a ring in order to have a crib.”

The following year, Heard settled a $50 million defamation lawsuit involving her ex-husband, Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp.

After losing the high-profile courtroom battle, which she described as career-ending, Heard sought refuge in Majorca.

While she was once one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, Amber has swapped the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for the calmer streets of Madrid in recent years

Once one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actresses, Amber Heard has exchanged Los Angeles’ fast-paced lifestyle for the quieter streets of Madrid

She reportedly rented a property using the name Martha Jane Cannary, the real name of legendary Wild West figure Calamity Jane.

Heard later made Madrid her home, settling there with her baby daughter, Oonagh.

The move appeared to be a deliberate attempt to put distance between herself and the fallout from the defamation trial—both emotionally and geographically.

With little fanfare and minimal publicity, the actress left behind her high-speed Southern California lifestyle and began a quieter new chapter in Spain.

‘The trial was beyond stressful, and she wanted to start fresh,’ a source told People magazine, adding she now ‘has new energy and is focused on things that she loves’.

The Texas native has not worked as an actress since the move, with the two films already shot that came out in 2023 being badly received.

Some Hollywood insiders claim she was ‘blacklisted’ following the widely televised trial.

In 2024, it was reported that Ms Heard had become ‘well and truly integrated’ into the Spanish capital’s elite after buying a €1.5million (£1.3million) home in the trendy northern district of Chamartin.

The five-bed property, featuring a garden and three bathrooms, counts millionaires, footballers and politicians as neighbours – who all enjoy being just a short drive from the city centre.

Amber’s pad was first built in the 1960s but reportedly underwent renovations shortly before being sold to the actress.

Speaking on her move, a neighbour in El Viso told the Daily Mail at the time: ‘She lives here and I often see her walking her daughter to school in the mornings.

‘She wears a cap and sunglasses and normal clothes and keeps a low profile.

‘She lives here in peace, this is a neighbourhood filled with famous people, including football players, but no one bothers each other, I think that’s why she likes it – she has completely integrated into the community.’

Amber’s neighbour added: ‘When Amber first arrived there were lots of photographers parked outside the home but now there are none.

‘No one here really knows who she is, they don’t recognise her in the street like they would in America.

‘When I saw all the commotion around her I had to ask my friend who she was and she explained she was Johnny Depp’s ex.’

Pointing to another house, she added: ‘An Atletico Madrid player lives there and no one even knows it, everyone keeps to themselves.’

So committed is she to embracing local culture that Amber has even learned the language, with her impressive command of Spanish evident in a previous TikTok video.

It was reported that Amber’s daughter Oonagh attends a private Catholic school for children aged one to six that teaches in both English and Spanish.

A local newspaper report from 2017 said the fees were around €600 per month, or €7,200 per year, although they are likely to have increased since then.

After picking up her daughter from school in the afternoons, the pair are often seen visiting an American supermarket called Taste of America.

An employee told the Daily Mail: ‘She comes here a lot in the afternoon with her little girl, my colleague has served them many times.

‘I assume she likes to buy things that remind her of home, we have all kinds of stuff from the USA here.’

The store sells Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Betty Crocker baking products, pumpkin pies and an array of American candy.

Amber herself admitted relief at putting the ordeal behind her and moving on with her life, telling Savannah Guthrie of the US morning show the Today Show: ‘I get to be a mom full-time, where I’m not having to juggle calls with lawyers.’

When she is not blending in with her local community, Amber likes to go running in the famous El Retiro park in the centre of the capital.

She was swamped by paparazzi there following the announcement that she was expecting a second child.

As the photographers congratulated her she responded in Spanish: ‘Thank you very much. It is my private life and I ask for respect.’

When asked if she plans on staying in the country, she replied in perfect Spanish: ‘Yes, I hope so. Yes, I love living here. I hope you are well, ciao. And thank you, nice to meet you.’

Last year, Amber welcomed twins, whom she carried, and announced the news in a Mother’s Day post in May.

‘Mother’s Day 2025 will be one I’ll never forget,’ she said. ‘This year I am elated beyond words to celebrate the completion of the family I’ve strived to build for years.

‘Today I officially share the news that I welcomed twins into the Heard gang. My daughter Agnes and my son Ocean are keeping my hands (and my heart) full.’

The actress continued: ‘When I had my first baby girl Oonagh four years ago, my world changed for ever.

‘I thought I couldn’t possibly burst with more joy. Well, now I am bursting times three!!!’

On a more sombre note, she said ‘becoming a mother by myself and on my own terms despite my own fertility challenges has been the most humbling experience of my life’.

She added: ‘I am eternally grateful that I was able to choose this responsibly and thoughtfully.

‘To all the moms, wherever you are today and however you got here, my dream family and I are celebrating with you.’

She concluded her post: ‘Mama and babies are enjoying every minute. And Oonagh is happily running the show.’

The following month, Amber returned to acting after two years, when she had last starred in the movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Although her performance was not for a mass audience, she made her stage debut as part of the world premiere production of playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ (Slave Play) new project, Spirit of the People, via Variety.

She performed in the play at the Williamstown Theatre Festival through August.

Amber then brought her twins, Ocean and Agnes, out in public for the first time as she celebrated Halloween in Madrid that year.

She took to Instagram with multiple photos of her trick-or-treating with the kids, as she was dressed as a witch in a black dress with a pointed hat.

‘Halloweening with my minnies,’ Amber captioned an accompanying post.

In November of that year, Ms Heard gave a rare insight into her family life as she shared an array of unseen photos from Thanksgiving celebrations over the years.

The actress took to Instagram to share the snaps from her years of family dinners, as well as a rare picture of Oonagh when she was younger.

The first snap showed Amber posing behind a huge spread, which included sweet potato casserole, turkey and a massive bowl of mashed potatoes.

In a picture from a different Thanksgiving year, Amber was seen frying chicken in a pan, while in another throwback, she was seen prepping vegetables with her father, David.

She was also seen serving up food at the table as her daughter Oonagh sat in a high chair when she was still a toddler.

Amber captioned the snaps: ‘Thanksgiving cheers over the years. A look back at all the full hearts and plates I’ve shared.

‘Hoping you are well topped up on both this year.’

Last month, Amber shared another rare insight into her life in Spain, as she posted Instagram snaps with her daughter after completing the KLM Norte Sur 10k race.

While it’s clear Amber has fully moved on with her life since the trial, she made a rare remark on how the 2022 defamation trial has impacted her life years later.

The actress opened up about the topic in the new documentary Silenced, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

‘This is not about me. I have lost my ability to speak. I am not here to tell my story,’ Amber said in a confessional for the documentary, per Variety.

‘In fact, I don’t want to use my voice anymore. That’s the problem,’ she further told the director of the film, Selina Miles.

Amber and Johnny first met in 2009 when they were cast in the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary.

They started dating in 2012 and tied the knot in a civil ceremony in 2015, though the marriage only lasted a year.

Amber filed for divorce and a restraining order against Johnny in May 2016, accusing the actor of being abusive throughout their relationship.

At the time, she said in an interview with Associated Press: ‘I am very happy that I have moved on with my life and keep moving on with my life. I just keep wanting to do with my life that which makes it better for other people and myself.’

She continued: ‘And doing the right thing and moving forward and dedicating yourself to justice, truth, to doing what’s right and helping others when you can – that’s everything to me. That’s all I’m interested in.’

Following their divorce, Depp filed a 2019 lawsuit against Amber for defamation over her December 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post, in which she wrote about alleged abuse.

While she had not mentioned Depp by name, his legal team argued there was ‘a clear implication that Depp is a domestic abuser’.

After a six-week televised battle, Depp was ultimately awarded $10million in compensatory damages and $5million in punitive damages.

Ms Heard counter-sued and was awarded $2million in damages, and while both parties appealed, they settled the case in December 2022.

After they settled, Ms Heard said: ‘After a great deal of deliberation I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia.

‘It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed.’

She added: ‘The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimised when they come forward.’

She concluded: ‘Now I finally have an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to.

‘I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.’

The outcome would be the catalyst for geographical change as Amber became the subject of death threats and humiliating memes.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Defamation Trial Timeline

In March 2019, Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife, Amber Heard, for $50million after she wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post in 2018 saying she was abused by the Pirates of the Caribbean star. However, she never explicitly named Depp in the piece but wrote that she is ‘a public figure representing domestic abuse’.

In February 2020, audio recordings obtained by the Daily Mail reveal Heard admitting to hitting Depp. ‘I f***ing was hitting you… I don’t know what the motion of my hand was, but you’re fine, I did not hurt you, I did not punch you, I was hitting you,’ Heard said.

In January 2021, Heard countersued her ex-husband for $100million.

On April 11, 2022, the six-week trial kicked off in Virginia to discuss the abuse allegations made throughout the couple’s relationship. The pair married in 2015 but divorced in 2017.

On April 20, 2022, Heard admitted getting violent with Depp as audio recording of the actress were played.

On May 4, 2022, Heard took the stand to recall romance with Depp before he allegedly abused her. The actress said the abuse dated back to 2013 when Depp allegedly sexually assaulted her.

On May 25, 2022, Depp testified again and claimed Heard’s allegations were false. He claimed he never abused his ex-wife.

On June 1, 2022, the judge ruled that Depp had won the defamation case against Heard, subjecting her to pay him $10.3million. The jury awarded Heard $2million after Depp’s attorney said Heard and her friends trashed her apartment before calling police.

On July 21, 2022, Heard appealed the judge’s decision in her defamation case against Depp – two months after she was subjected to pay $10million to her ex-husband in damages.

On July 22, 2022, Depp filed an appeal against his conviction for defaming Heard after calling the domestic abuse claims against him a ‘hoax’ – subjecting him to pay his ex-wife $2million.

Christa Pike Is First Death Row Inmate to Survive Lethal Injection, Expert Says

0

Christa Pike became the first death row inmate known to survive a lethal injection Wednesday after the execution failed to stop her breathing and heartbeat — an expert described the incident as “singular and unparalleled.”

Pike, 50, was secured to a gurney inside the death chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution shortly before 7:30 p.m. CDT. Officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, but neither produced the intended effect.

Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, said seven other condemned prisoners had survived medical complications during executions after staff members were unable to locate a vein. However, she said no inmate had previously survived after receiving the lethal drug itself.

Maher called Pike’s case “singular and unparalleled.” Several experienced media witnesses also said the scene appeared abnormal and unlike a typical execution.

When the second dose of the lethal injection failed, Pike’s attorneys filed an emergency request to halt the execution, arguing that she was suffering “unnecessary agony.” District Judge Clifton L. Corker granted the motion.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered an immediate “comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred” and suspended the state’s only other scheduled execution for the remainder of the year.

“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” Lee said.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said it had “followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office.”

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for killing a classmate whom she and her boyfriend lured to a secluded area near the University of Tennessee campus. The pair brutally beat and tortured the woman before Pike crushed her skull with a piece of asphalt.

Tennessee law permits officials to administer a second dose of the execution drug if the first fails. The statute, however, does not specify what should happen if the second dose is also unsuccessful.

Strictly Fans Unite Over It Takes Two Presenter Ellie Taylor

Strictly Come Dancing viewers have welcomed It Takes Two’s “beautiful” new host, Ellie Taylor, after she stepped into the role previously held by Fleur East and Janette Manrara.

The BBC confirmed in August that the weekday Strictly spin-off would also receive a presenter shake-up, following the announcement that Emma Willis and Josh Widdicombe were taking over from Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman on the main show. Taylor, who competed on Strictly four years ago, was subsequently named as the new face of It Takes Two.

The 42-year-old first became known as a comedian before building a presenting career on programmes such as Snog Marry Avoid? and The Great Pottery Throw Down. She has now taken on a high-profile role once occupied by Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark and Claudia Winkleman.

Early reactions suggest Taylor has settled into the job with confidence. Viewers took to social media to praise the Essex-born presenter, with one X user writing on Tuesday evening, September 30: “Love the new format and Ellie Taylor runs the show brilliantly.”

Another viewer said they were not convinced by every change to the programme but added: “Just catching up on It Takes Two. I’m not enjoying everything, but my God Ellie is smashing it so far. Absolutely brilliant.”

A third fan also questioned the format changes while applauding Taylor’s performance: “Don’t like the changes, but Ellie is fab. Should have got the main gig with Emma.”

One particularly enthusiastic response claimed: “Ellie did better in one show than Fleur and Janette did in three years.”

Another viewer kept their verdict short and sweet, posting: “Ellie is so beautiful.”

When the BBC announced Taylor’s appointment in August, she said: “What a total joy to return to Strictly in this new role. I feel incredibly honoured to follow in the footsteps of the phenomenal line-up of hosts who’ve made Strictly – It Takes Two so loved over the years.

“I can’t wait to immerse myself in all the gossip and sequins flying out of the ballroom in order to bring my fellow Strictly fans everything they need to know. I’m so excited, I could cha cha! (But I won’t – don’t worry… no one needs to see that again.)”

It Takes Two producer Rhe-an Archibald described the refreshed programme as “Strictly – It Takes Two, reinvented for the 2026 season”. They added: “With a wealth of new features and deep dives, we want to reflect the conversations happening in living rooms up and down the country – full of opinions, laughs, surprises and those moments everyone wants to talk about.

“With the fun and funny Ellie at the helm, it will be an utterly unmissable companion to Strictly Come Dancing.”

Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two airs from Monday to Friday at 6:30pm on BBC Two and can also be streamed on BBC iPlayer.

Brooklyn Beckham, 27, Shows Off New Salt-and-Pepper Hair Look

Brooklyn Beckham showed off newly visible salt-and-pepper strands as he and Nicola Peltz attended the Balenciaga show in Paris on Thursday.

The 27-year-old eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham is expected to avoid crossing paths with his estranged family in the French capital, where they are due to attend Victoria’s fashion show on Friday.

Brooklyn swept his grown-out salt-and-pepper hair behind his ears as he arrived for Balenciaga’s spring/summer 2027 presentation.

The aspiring chef opted for a relaxed white shirt worn open at the collar, a loosely knotted black tie, leather jacket and cargo trousers as he posed alongside his beaming wife, Nicola.

The actress highlighted her toned figure in a black tank top, pairing it with a low-rise skirt and stiletto heels.

Married since 2022, the couple appeared cheerful as they arrived hand-in-hand before cuddling up for photographs at the Paris fashion event.

Elsewhere, Brooklyn’s brother Romeo shared a series of Paris photographs on Instagram ahead of Victoria’s fashion show.

Victoria’s show has become one of the standout events during Paris Fashion Week. However, amid the family’s ongoing feud, her eldest son is expected to take care not to encounter his relatives.

Brooklyn has not attended a family event for almost two years. In January, he issued a scathing six-page statement criticising his parents and said he was no longer part of “Brand Beckham.”

As preparations continued for this week’s show, Victoria attracted attention by heading to the gym in four-inch stiletto heels on Monday.

Her husband, David, filmed her walking on a StairMaster in the heels, appearing bemused as she carefully balanced on each step.

In a video posted to Victoria’s Instagram Story, 51-year-old David asked: “Darling, I know it’s Fashion Week, but don’t you think you’re taking this a bit too far?”

Victoria was unfazed by the potential risk and jokingly replied: “No, I’m just training.”

The Spice Girl completed the look with a burgundy leather midi skirt and pale pink shirt, both from her own fashion label.

Victoria’s holding company, which includes her fashion and beauty brands, recorded an operating profit of £7.3 million for the year ending December 2025. That marked a major turnaround from the £1.5 million operating loss reported the previous year.

Her fashion business alone posted an operating profit of £1.5 million, helped by increased sales of the £110 grey Tilly T-shirt and the £395 Alina jeans, a 1970s-inspired design she wore in her Netflix documentary.

Notes accompanying the accounts for the year to December 2025 said: “The series generated… particularly strong momentum in denim and jersey, with unit sales boosted by 48 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.”

There was also an operating profit for the first time – as proudly announced to the Financial Times earlier this month.

She told the newspaper: ‘We have all worked hard for a long time for this moment of profitability and growth.

‘We’ve been very transparent about the problems that we had in the business but have recovered and are now growing at a sensible pace. After 20 years, people don’t look at my brand as a celebrity brand any more.’

But the full position is that after tax the fashion business actually made a loss of £1.7million. What’s more, there was a new loan to the fashion business of £1.5million.

Fashion is booming, but the cost of sales is still sky-high and stands at £17.5million for the fashion business, actually an increase on the previous year. The fashion brand also owes £59million to creditors.

When you include the make-up and beauty brand the figures look better. Victoria Beckham Holdings made an operating profit of £7.3million, and after-tax made a profit of £2.4million.

Loyal Dog Fetches Police to Help Owner Who Fell at Kansas Home

0

A Kansas dog is receiving praise from police after guiding an officer to its owner, who had fallen and could not get back on their feet.

Body camera video released by the Leawood Police Department captures the unusual rescue, beginning when an officer spotted the leashed dog wandering in the middle of a residential street during patrol.

According to police, the officer quickly noticed that although the dog was secured by a leash, no owner could be seen nearby.

The dog barked toward the officer, who responded, “Hi, why don’t you go on back home?” Instead, the animal appeared determined to lead the officer somewhere.

The officer followed the dog for roughly half a block and up to a nearby home. Police said the garage door was open, and the homeowner was found lying on the floor and unable to get up.

The resident had reportedly been in that position for more than three hours before the officer arrived.

The footage shows the officer walking up the driveway behind the dog. A second dog then appeared as the officer approached the house.

“Is this where you live?” the officer asked the dogs.

When he located the resident, the officer immediately checked on them, asking, “Hi, are you OK?”

“Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed,” the Leawood Police Department said. The resident was treated by medical professionals and has since returned home to recover.

Burglar Jailed After Headbutting Frail 86-Year-Old Pensioner to Death

0

A “cowardly” burglar who headbutted and fatally injured a frail pensioner during a nighttime raid has been jailed after the victim tried to protect his wife.

Ashley Malcom, 40, was sentenced at the Old Bailey to 18 years in prison, followed by five years on extended licence, after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 86-year-old John Burke.

Malcom attacked Mr Burke after breaking into the home he shared with his 91-year-old wife, Peggy, on Fountayne Road in Hackney, east London, in the early hours of September 29, 2025.

Within hours of raiding the elderly couple’s home, Malcom, from Hackney, also broke into a care home and tried to burgle another flat while its occupants were inside.

During sentencing, Judge Simon Mayo KC said Malcom had embarked on a “sustained course of criminal conduct” during the night of September 28 and 29, 2025. His offending involved breaking into “several” residential properties, including the home of the “vulnerable” Mr Burke.

The judge said: “You entered the home of two elderly and vulnerable occupants. The burglary took place over a prolonged period.

“During the course of that burglary you headbutted Mr Burke. That headbutt fractured his nose and caused intracranial bleeding, and he died as a consequence.”

Judge Mayo acknowledged the “immeasurable” loss suffered by Mr Burke’s family, including his widow, to whom he had been married for many decades.

The court previously heard that Mr Burke was in poor health and living with several medical conditions, including dementia, when the attack took place.

Malcom broke into the property shortly before midnight and remained inside for an hour and a half before leaving with a wheeled shopping trolley.

After leaving the trolley’s contents at another address, he returned at 2.45am and spent a further 20 minutes inside the flat before departing with a box under his arm.

Later that morning, a carer arrived at the flat and saw that a window had been smashed and the kitchen was in disarray.

She found Mr Burke injured. He told her: “Oh thanks you’re here. He attacked me. He beat me up last night around 11pm, a 6ft-tall man. He used to be one of the caretakers.”

Mr Burke told paramedics that two men had headbutted him. He said he had been too frightened to leave his bedroom to call 999 and had waited seven hours for the carer to arrive.

Mrs Burke, who also had dementia, told investigators that she had slept through the attack.

Mr Burke underwent tests at Homerton Hospital but was discharged and returned home at 2.35pm after a locum radiologist failed to detect the bleeding on his brain and his broken nose.

The following morning, his son Sean Burke found him unconscious on the bedroom floor. He was taken back to hospital by ambulance.

Tests confirmed that Mr Burke had suffered a “devastating and irreversible” brain injury, as well as extensive bruising and a broken nose. He later died from his injuries.

After burgling Mr Burke, Malcolm then targeted a residential care home in Hackney at 6.25am. When confronted by a support worker, Malcom ran towards him while making ‘loud groaning noises’.

Just after 6.55am, Malcolm tried to break into a third couple’s home in nearby Stamford Hill with a screwdriver.

The female householder had been in the shower and challenged him wearing just a towel. Her husband ran downstairs armed with a bicycle pump which Malcolm took from him and used to attack him.

Malcolm admitted burgling Mr Burke’s home of various items including food and medication, another burglary and attempted burglary, but denied murder and pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter part-way through his trial.

He also admitted assaulting the male occupant of the flat he tried to break into, causing him actual bodily harm.

Separately, Malcolm had admitted another burglary in May 2025 and an attempted burglary in July 2025 and possession of cocaine.

Judge Mayo noted the defendant’s addiction and mental health difficulties but said his ‘extensive’ history of domestic burglary was a ‘substantial aggravating factor’ in his offending.

Mitigating, defence barrister Emin Kandola referred to a statement in which Malcolm wrote: ‘I’m very sorry about what happened. It was an accident. I’m very sorry to the family.’

Sean told the court it ‘angered’ him to think about what Malcom put his dad through on the night of the attack.

He said: ‘My dad did not deserve to die in such a way, he had earned the right to pass away from natural causes in his own silent way.

‘To think that this man felt that he had to attack my dad who was a vulnerable and frail elderly person who would never have been able to fight back. There was nothing of any value in the house as my parents did not have much but they had each other.’

He described his father was a ‘quiet, hard-working, easy-going man,’ adding: ‘He was the man that showed me that hard work, respect, good manners and a good heart would always pay off.’

Reece Lambert, Mr Burke’s grandson, said he believed his grandfather was attacked as he ‘protected the woman he loved with everything he had left’.

He described his grandfather, originally from Dublin, as stoic and quiet with a ‘wicked sense of humour’ and an enduring love for his wife.

Man Warned 3 Would Die Before Shooting Co-Workers, Police Say

A Virginia man entered his workplace, warned a co-worker that several people would die and then opened fire, according to law enforcement officials.

Marvin Grant, 37, fatally shot 48-year-old Ricky Lamot and 33-year-old Christopher Serrano, the Manassas City Police Department said. A third person was wounded in the workplace shooting.

Grant arrived Wednesday morning at United Rentals in Manassas, a city roughly 30 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The company describes itself as “the largest equipment rental company in the world,” operating in “49 states and ten Canadian provinces.”

Grant “made a statement to a co-worker that ‘three people are going to die,’” Manassas Police Chief Doug Keen said at a news conference attended by regional CBS affiliate WUSA. “He then produced a handgun and began shooting.”

Police received a report of a shooting at the United Rentals location on Wellington Road at about 7:10 a.m., authorities said. Officers arrived minutes later and found three victims inside the northern Virginia facility.

All three victims were taken to a local hospital. Lamot and Serrano were pronounced dead, while the third victim was listed in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, police said.

By the time officers arrived, Grant had left the area in a silver Toyota Camry. Investigators tracked his phone to Harrisonburg, Virginia, approximately 100 miles southwest of Manassas.

Virginia State Police began searching for Grant at about 8:20 a.m. A trooper later spotted the Camry. Authorities said the vehicle entered a rest area, where troopers attempted to pull it over.

“The suspect exited his vehicle, then returned to his vehicle, and continued driving southbound on Interstate 81,” police said. Troopers continued following him.

Several miles later, Grant stopped on the shoulder of the interstate and got out with a firearm pointed at his head. Authorities, including a crisis negotiator, tried to communicate with him. At about 10:30 a.m., however, Grant reportedly shot himself.

Grant was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said Grant had been working at United Rentals for a relatively short time. Co-workers were reportedly shocked by the deadly shooting.

Keen said Wednesday that investigators had not determined a motive for the attack.

The couple exchanged vows outdoors with their families present, including Annie’s parents and Henry’s mother and siblings.

Henry became emotional during the vows and was seen wiping tears from his eyes as he spoke to his bride.

Adult star Lily Phillips, who served as one of Annie’s bridesmaids, watched proudly as the couple sealed their marriage with a kiss.

The newlyweds were all smiles when Henry presented Annie with a striking Cartier wedding ring.

Annie’s two Cavoodle dogs also played a part in the ceremony, entering with the assistance of their minders.

Before the wedding, Annie told the Daily Mail that she and Henry had planned the celebration in detail well ahead of time.

The adult star provided a glimpse into how they would be adjusting to post-wedding life.

‘I will be crying when I read my vows, I wrote them myself, they are five minutes long!’ she said.

‘We just want it to be the best day. Things will probably go wrong, but that’s life.’

She continued: ‘We have been living together for a year and a half, so we already feel as though we are married!

‘The thing that will rock us though is the post-wedding depression. My hen’s party was the best day of my life… once it was done, I was so depressed!

‘The only thing getting me through was I still had the upcoming wedding. Once it is done, I will be like, “I have nothing to look forward to anymore!”

After the wedding, the couple will head off for a short honeymoon.

‘We have got a honeymoon booked! We thought it would be weird to get married… and then just go back to normal life! So, we are going away for a week,’ Annie said.

She then revealed the reasoning behind holding her wedding ceremony on the unconventional date of Thursday, October 1.

‘There was no significance other than we wanted to have the wedding in the dry season… and it looked like a good date!’ she quipped.

Annie opened up about what steps she was taking to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day.

‘I don’t think anything will go wrong, I have everything down pat, I got the run sheet! If anything goes wrong, it is like, “Well, what am I going to do about it!”,’ she joked.

Annie also shared that her wedding will be an intimate affair filled with only her and Henry’s closest friends and family, including her good pal, fellow adult star Lily Phillips.

She said she and Henry had been culling their guest list for some time, adding that only their nearest and dearest would be there.

Annie explained that the family rift is nothing new, revealing Henry is no longer close to his father.

‘He and Henry haven’t had a relationship for a few years, so it is not a shock to us,’ she said.

‘To be fair, we didn’t actually send him an invite.’

Annie was quick to add her line of work is not behind the estrangement, noting James has never publicly commented on the situation.

The couple’s intimate wedding comes after they navigated a difficult chapter in their relationship, including Henry’s gambling addiction, which saw him accumulate significant debt.

Knight became engaged in March 2025 when Brayshaw got down on one knee during a holiday in Los Angeles.

In June, Annie revealed their wedding was already set to cost $170,000, with the venue alone accounting for $60,000.

How El Salvador Traded Gang Violence for Surf Resorts and Margaritas

0

As we sweep around blind bends and overtake seemingly every vehicle in sight, my taxi driver Hugo insists he has never felt safer. With his foot firmly planted on the accelerator, I resist the urge to comment. Yet our conversation is not really about the nerve-racking drive from the airport; it is about the remarkable transformation of his homeland, El Salvador.

Only a decade ago, this small Central American nation was dubbed the murder capital of the world, recording roughly one killing every hour.

Gangs held much of the country’s six million people in fear, demanding extortion payments and using kidnapping, torture and murder to maintain control.

Violence shaped much of 32-year-old Hugo’s life. Before becoming an Uber driver, he worked behind the wheel of a bus and was forced to surrender a third of his £75 weekly income to gang members as ‘renta’, or protection money. ‘If you didn’t pay? Well, they killed you,’ he says.

Today, however, the picture is very different. President Nayib Bukele, who has described himself as the ‘world’s coolest dictator’, invoked emergency powers to detain suspected gang members. Around 91,000 people have been arrested from a national population of only six million.

With gang leaders and foot soldiers behind bars, Salvadorans are beginning to leave behind decades marked by military dictatorships, civil war and gang violence. In their place has come a new force: tourism.

Jim Norton visits the country's most popular resort, El Tunco

Jim Norton explores El Tunco, El Salvador’s most popular resort

The United Nations’ World Tourism Organisation now ranks El Salvador as the third fastest-growing holiday destination in the world.

The appeal becomes clear within minutes. A 30-minute drive west of the airport — even faster when Hugo is driving — leads to a spectacular 190-mile Pacific coastline. Volcanic cliffs descend towards rugged surf towns, where palm trees frame black-sand beaches.

I am heading for El Tunco, the country’s best-known resort. Once a destination reserved for the most adventurous backpackers and surfers, it remains filled with inexpensive hostels and casual eateries serving cheap pupusas and fried plantain — thick corn tortillas accompanied by slices of fried banana.

Now, though, a more affluent crowd is arriving, and luxury beachfront villas and stylish coffee shops are appearing alongside the traditional budget businesses.

We pass through an armed checkpoint with a wave from the guards before I arrive at my accommodation, Balance Surf & Yoga Retreat.

The owner, Adrian, welcomes me. A tall, long-haired surfer from the United States, he perfectly matches the retreat’s relaxed, bohemian character.

Surfing is one of the great appeals of El Tunco, so Jim checks into the Balance Surf & Yoga Retreat

The retreat is an oasis of calm. Leaving feels almost impossible, and I spend long stretches in a hammock beneath mango and walnut trees, eating tacos, drinking cacao smoothies and cooling down in the plunge pool.

Over a beer, Adrian tells me he discovered the location by chance in 2004, while taking a road trip to Costa Rica with his closest friend, Matty.

The pair were 19 when police stopped them at gunpoint in the middle of the night. Officers warned them not to continue towards their next destination, Honduras, because of civil unrest there.

The eager surfers woke the following morning to find themselves looking out over flawless waves — and not a single person in the water.

Elsewhere, El Salvador was buckling under the rise of notorious gangs, such as MS-13 and Barrio 18, that had filled the power vacuum after a brutal 12-year civil war. But the tiny town of El Tunco was seen as ‘neutral’.

They ended up staying a month – surfing every day and spearfishing – and vowed to return. Two decades on and it is no longer the same sleepy village, instead earning itself a reputation as El Salvador’s party capital for Salvadorians at weekends.

Once a quiet, sleepy destination, El Tunco has become a party hotspot

Indeed, my first two nights are spent in a haze of mezcal and margaritas, dancing to reggaeton in beachside bars.

I can’t decide if it’s reassuring or disconcerting to see a line of stony-faced armed soldiers keeping watch.

Weekdays in the town are a quieter affair. It gives me a chance to focus on the real reason I, like many, have travelled here – El Salvador’s world-class waves.

American surfers first started seeking out the consistent swells in the 1960s. Now, President Bukele is looking to supercharge this, pouring a billion pounds into revamping the coastline as ‘Surf City’.

I head out for a lesson with Balance’s finest surf coach Brayan, 24, who has impressive English. On one side of the bay is El Sunzal, a perfect, mellow 600ft longboard wave.

But given my level, I’m taken instead to La Bocana, a more powerful, faster – and unfortunately shallower – break over sharp rocks.

El Tunco beach is beautiful, and the locals are happy here

I appear to have oversold my surfing abilities, and return nursing cut feet and grazed knees. But I’m happy – it’s hard not to be in El Tunco under cloudless skies and 30C (86F) heat in January.

And it’s fair to say the locals are, too. Everyone has a terrifying story of the El Salvador of old. Take street seller Eddy, 50, who tells me how he was just eight years old when he watched his mother set upon by five men and stabbed to death.

As the sun sets on my final evening, a fiery glow casts silhouettes across a busy beach. It’s already a raucous atmosphere.

Not long ago the nation was too scared to set foot outside after dark. Now it’s just getting started.
